Barcelona, the Port Vell and the city

Billionaire superyachts cast a shadow over Barcelona's traditional barrios

The world's largest private yacht looms over the old port of Barcelona – its six-deck, 163m profile offering proof of the love of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for a city he will visit again this week as his football team, Chelsea, tries to secure a place in the Champions League final.

But the superyacht, equipped with its own mini-submarine and anti-paparazzi shield, is a symbol of what neighbours in the traditional fishermen's neighbourhood of La Barceloneta fear will bring about the demise of one of the few city centre barrios to have maintained its traditional working-class character. Old Barcelona is under threat. A British private investment fund has taken control of much of the port area and has asked for an extended licence so that it can turn the Marina Port Vell into the Mediterranean's prime home for superyachts. Sources close to the group said it wanted the licence to run until 2036.

The Mayfair-based Salamanca Group intends to make the marina home to yachts up to 180 metres long, bringing the planet's growing club of mega-rich to a marina that it says "dominates the heart of Barcelona". But Barceloneta residents say the boats will dwarf the neighbourhood's famously narrow, four- or five-storey blocks of flats, where working-class families live in tiny homes and colourful outdoor washing lines leave the neighbourhood's laundry on public display.

"I've lived here all my life and the barrio has a special identity, precisely because so many working-class people have always lived here," said 68-year-old pensioner Antonio García, of the L'Ostia neighbourhood group. "But this will price us out, turning the port into a place only for the very rich and changing things for ever."

Neighbours fear that a huge wall may go up around part of the port to ensure the privacy of a handful of wealthy people, creating a fortress-like billionaires' ghetto on their doorstep. Protesters have already taken to Barceloneta's narrow streets, demanding that speculators be kept away from an area renowned for its cheap seafood restaurants and proximity to Barcelona's colourful urban beach.

"This will make it even more touristy and will see us expelled from our own barrio. We want it as it has always been, a real community of working-class people with roots right here," said García.

Most of Barcelona's fishing fleet disappeared years ago, but the area also had factories and most people worked in manufacturing. Barceloneta was also a centre of popular culture, with the city's own version of the rumba dance emerging here. The rundown area was partially redeveloped, along with the old port, for the 1992 Olympics, but it survived the gentrification of other parts of the old town. "The flats here are too small for the wealthier people from around Europe who have moved into other parts of the city," explained García. "That has saved us so far, but now people are buying them up to rent out as holiday apartments."

Salamanca took over the marina in 2010. The company is run by founder Martin Bellamy, a former army officer. Last year it claimed that work on the marina would be completed this autumn. But a city hall spokeswoman said that only after Salamanca had received an extended licence from the Spanish government would Barcelona's authorities be able to review the project and decide whether to hand out its own permits. "This will have a landscape impact on Barcelona and so will have to be studied closely," said Rosa Díaz. "The city hall approves in principle of a large investment that might generate jobs and bring wealth, but it is not going to allow them to do whatever they like. And, of course, it will consult the neighbours."

Salamanca's Barcelona outpost declined to give figures for the amount of money it wants to invest. Nor would it respond publicly to the concerns of people in La Barceloneta.

Locals say some smaller boat owners, including those who live on their boats, are already being told they must leave the marina. A source close to Salamanca said this was because repair work had already started. Boat owners were being offered berths at cut-rate prices in nearby marinas, as well as a place on the waiting list to get back once work was finished.

Among possible solutions for multi-millionaires seeking privacy were temporary screens covering a glass or metal fence around part of the marina.

The huge project comes as Barcelona seeks to shed its reputation for cheap, drunken, stag-party tourism, with a recent law cracking down on street prostitutes in places such as the Las Ramblas boulevard.

Abramovich has denied rumours that he is a shareholder in a Barcelona refit and repair yard, MB92, that lies beside the marina and also plans to expand its facilities for superyachts.

The Marina Port Vell is not the only modernisation project in town. Barcelona is also competing with Madrid for the Eurovegas complex, a vast collection of hotels, casinos and conference centres that the Las Vegas-based gambling billionaire Sheldon Adelson wants to build in Spain .

These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

The city has become a hub for billionaires’ superyachts, banking on the strength of the “blue economy.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

samar yacht barcelona

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

16 Absolute Best Seafood Restaurants In Barcelona, Spain

Aerial view of Barcelona

As Catalonia's capital, Barcelona is a major hub for all things art, history, and culinary. From the famous Sagrada Família church to the Museu Picasso, it's hard to run out of things to do in Barcelona. However, since it is situated on the coast of the Balearic Sea, one of the best things that Barcelona has is incredible seafood. Whether you're craving a  classic ceviche recipe , grilled octopus, or seafood paella, there are plenty of incredible restaurants that have mastered the art of cooking ocean critters.

Though pretty much anywhere in the Mediterranean is ideal for enjoying fresh fish and crustaceans, Barcelona, in particular, has a huge array of restaurant options. Like most major cities, you'll find everything from upscale, Michelin-starred establishments to more casual yet delicious seafood stands and eateries. If you're planning to explore the dining scene of Spain's capital, this list of the absolute best seafood restaurants in Barcelona will keep you swimming in filling fish dishes.

Lascar 74 is a ceviche bar focusing on fresh seafood and the  best natural wines . From traditional Peruvian-style ceviches to more modern takes, Lascar 74 has a vibrant menu that brings innovation and flavor to the table. Patrons can also taste the classic al fresco dining experience by snagging a spot on the sidewalk patio.

Both the interior and the plating are very contemporary, leading with style and simplicity. However, the quality and freshness of the seafood are what make the strongest and most lasting impression at Lascar 74. The majority of the wines on the list are natural, with low-intervention practices being a huge priority in the bar's selection. The drink list also features an array of Pisco cocktails, paying tribute to the Peruvian culinary scene  and its heritage of ceviche.

As the name suggests, Crudo Bar is a seafood establishment in Barcelona specializing in raw and ceviche-style fish preparations. Serving food in the crudo style allows the chefs to maintain the texture, taste, freshness, and integrity of the high-quality ingredients. With a passion for healthy elements in mind, Crudo Bar offers a complex seafood-forward menu that is visually stunning for guests to enjoy.

The spicy tuna tartare is one of the most popular and flavorful dishes on the menu. The combination of fresh fish with the zing from tangy citrus and spice yields a fool-proof combo that makes for the ideal appetizer. Those looking to enjoy a sample of some of the chef's favorites can embark on the tasting menu, which offers a choice of either four or six courses with an assortment of desserts.

Bodega la Peninsular

Located in the attractive seaside neighborhood of Barceloneta, Bodega la Peninsular is a gastronomic winery and tapas bar specializing in seafood-centric bites. The market-driven menu features daily catches that come directly from the Barcelona Fish Market. These dishes include traditional Spanish and Catalonian stews, delicate filets of fish, and small bite tapas.

While the menu is ever-changing and depends upon the daily catches and seasonal produce, Bodega la Peninsular always has something new and innovative in the works. The setting is very quaint and warm, featuring an intimate dining space that is quite cozy. When it comes to drinks, there is an impressive selection of wine, vermouths, and of course, a classic Spanish sangria. Guests can order at the bar or take a seat at a table for two when dining at Bodega la Peninsular experience.

La Paradeta

La Paradeta began as a small family-owned seafood joint in the Sants neighborhood on a mission to offer quality seafood at a fair price. Since then, it has evolved into a successful restaurant group with three locations — but the principles have stayed the same. The menus at the Sants, Meridiana, and Grácia locations of La Paradeta feature simple preparation of different fish to be paired with one of the many vibrant and flavorful house-made sauces.

The appetizer portion of the menu offers light bites like salads, mixed seafood soup, and raw oysters served with lemon. However, the entree section is where you'll find the star of the show. The grilled lobster is both decadent and universal, but if you're looking for a more local delicacy, the cuttlefish is a Spanish favorite that can be enjoyed both fried or grilled.

If you're a fan of sardines, Can Maño should be at the top of your Barcelona bucket list. This simple and homey restaurant is a local favorite that is known to get pretty packed on the daily. In fact, the seafood bar normally opens around 8:15 AM, allowing guests to arrive early and get their fix. Even with all that extra time in the mornings, Can Maño tends to get really busy around noon, so arriving before then is recommended to ensure you grab a spot.

The sardines are famous. The filets are served whole and crispy with nothing more than a lemon wedge on the side. Despite the simplicity of this dish, they manage to wow locals and tourists alike constantly. The mussels are another favorite for shellfish fans, offering a simple and fresh bite.

El Taste de Joan Noi

According to Culinary Backstreets , El Tast de Joan noi is situated in an enticing market in Gracia. Upon entering the restaurant, guests are greeted with a selection of freshly caught fish on ice, allowing them to look at their meal before eating it. Patrons can also sit up against the bar, enjoying a clear view of the simple yet decadent cooking process. This family-owned and operated restaurant opened in 2009, right next door to the owner's original seafood stand in the market.

From baby scallops to sardines, the appetizers start any meal on a great bite. However, the diced and seared tuna is a local favorite that is the perfect blend of sweet and savory. A decadent take on lobster paella can also be ordered in advance, as can the Zarzuela de Pescado, which is sort of like a seafood casserole.

Carballeira

Located just steps from the beach in the center of the Barceloneta quarter, Carballeira has been serving Galacian seafood to locals and tourists since 1944. The interior decor mirrors that of a classic seafood restaurant, with blue tones and wooden accents complemented by nautical art and decor throughout. With a passion for all things sea, Carballeria shows its love for the ocean and the fresh fish it provides through its decor and its careful execution of fish-centric dishes.

Standout plates include Carballeria's rendition of a traditional seafood paella , which is one of, if not the most well-known dish of Spain. For a more luxurious meal, check out the Cantabrian Sea Lobster, either griddled on its own or sauteed with octopus, chili, and garlic for an extra burst of flavor.

Mont Bar is a Michelin-star restaurant serving up equal parts tapas and grandiose entrees in Barcelona. The restaurant is recognized for using dynamic techniques and exciting ingredients from across the world, united by a sense of creative expression and passion. Each dish is an exercise in refinement, highlighting the top-notch components in simple yet inspired ways.

There are many standout dishes among several menu sections, and each keeps diners returning to Mont Bar for more. Try a touch of everything in the tapas section, including thy decadent oysters and the chipotle Wagyu beef tartare. Another unique dish is the one-of-a-kind combo of Japanese-style mochi with classic Spanish Iberian sobrasada and mahón cheese. Although this one isn't seafood, the spiced sausage is a perfect complement to the light salinity of this traditional Menorca cows cheese.

Estimar is another Michelin-recognized restaurant contributing to the bustling Barcelona food scene. This intimate, family-owned spot operates first and foremost with respect for the ocean and the seafood purchased from the local Puerto de Roses market. While the prices at Estimar are slightly higher than some other establishments on this list, the quality of ingredients and preparation, paired with the artful presentation and attentive service, is worth the extra spend.

Every seafood entree on the Estimar menu is cooked on the grill and seasoned just enough to highlight the natural flavors of the sea. If you want to try something new, the Roses royal sea cucumber is a vibrant dish entirely unique to Estimar. Alternatively, check out how Estimar pushes simple  anchovy recipes  forward; fried fish marinated with lemon collided in a bright, briny, and crispy bite.

If you're looking for a cozy atmosphere and top-notch seafood, Bar Mut is a solid spot for dinner in Barcelona. This bistro-style restaurant is located just off Passeig de Gràcia. The walls are lined with Spanish wines, and though it is definitely on the smaller side, sitting at the marble bar on a wooden stool has a special charm. Rather than a consistent menu, guests order from a chalkboard that features all of the daily offerings and specials. Nothing says fresh options like an offering list that is always changing.

Some regular offerings that locals love include seasonal croquettes and a steak dish that can be paired with either mushrooms or foie gras. If you can make a reservation, that is recommended as the eatery is small, and the appetite for Bar Mut is high. However, if you're able to arrive earlier in the evening, you should be able to grab a table either inside or on the quaint patio.

For almost 120 years, Can Solé has been serving signature rice and seafood dishes to the citizens and admirers of Barcelona. When it first opened in 1903, Can Solé was a go-to spot for local fishermen. Now, it is one of the city's most known and loved restaurants, and it is safe to say that Can Solé has cracked the code on how to create crowd-pleasing yet classic Mediterranean cuisine.

The menu at Can Solé is extensive and full of a wide range of seafood for diners to choose from. From simple Spanish favorites such as lobster with tomato and seafood paella to more complex and layered delicacies like the Catalan cod, fried with onions, grape, raisin, and pine nuts — there is something for every palette at this long-standing spot.

Tunateca Balfegó Espai Gastronòmic

Tunateca Balfegó Espai Gastronòmic is a one-of-a-kind dining experience dedicated entirely to the appreciation of bluefin tuna. Guests are greeted by a bright blue interior featuring ornate ceiling art made of countless bluefin tunas. The menu showcases the popular fish in raw and cooked preparations, making Tunateca a must-try for tuna lovers in Barcelona.

The cuisine at Tunateca Balfegó Espai Gastronòmic fuses Japanese and Western techniques and ingredients to create two uniquely curated menus within one restaurant. There are two separate tasting menu options at Tunateca, both featuring optional beverage pairings as well. Sure enough, the rotating offerings have a range. Current tasting menus show a crispy bluefin tuna pâté sandwich, decked with dried plum and mustard, and a tuna with poblano mole served along with foie ganache and crispy corn omelet. Every dish at Tunateca is innovative and memorable.

Concise plating with minimal garnish and quality wood-fired grilling is Lluritu's signature style. There is not a single stovetop in the Lluritu kitchen, allowing the chefs to hone in on the specialization of grilling fresh fish and other proteins from the Spanish coast. With a passion for highlighting the inherent flavor of the ingredients at hand, rather than excessive embellishment from over-seasoning and over-garnishing, the food at Lluritu is minimally complicated but holds maximum flavor.

The menu has only 15 dishes, with each one designed to highlight a particular type of fish. A standout favorite is the restaurant's namesake Lluritu, which is a meal featuring an entire red scale fish cooked to a crispy texture and a side of red peppers. It is perfect for sharing and pairing with a crisp glass of Cava.

Since opening in 2006, Lasarte has risen to the top of Barcelona's fine-dining scene. The executive chef is none other than Martín Berasategui, a renowned culinary artist who specializes in Basque cuisine and has more Michelin stars to his name than any other Spanish chef. In 2017, Lasarte was given a coveted three Michelin star restaurant rating, and thanks to a recent renovation, it boasts a much more modern and contemporary atmosphere. The restaurant is located in the Monument Hotel, which is situated along the famous Paseo de Gracia.

The lunch menu must be served to the whole table and features family-style dishes like cod confit with sour cream, mustard, and kale alongside a warm seafood salad. However, at dinner, guests are able to order a la carte or take part in the tasting menu experience for the whole table. If the entire table is on board, the tasting menu features 11 one-of-a-kind courses that are worth the €305.

Can Majó is a family-run restaurant that sits right next to the sandy beaches of Barcelona. The outdoor patio is ideal for a sunny seafood lunch or dinner paired with stunning sea views. The Barceloneta market, where most of the seafood served is sourced from, is a short walk away from the restaurant, ensuring that the day's catch is as fresh as possible. When it comes to stand-out menu items, paella is by far the most popular. The crispy croquettes are also a beloved appetizer.

Since it is a family-owned and operated establishment, the service is just as warm as the paella. Plus, the boardwalk and ocean views set the scene for an authentic seafood experience along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Enoteca Paco Pérez

Last and certainly not least, Enoteca Paco Pérez is a two-time Michelin star award-winning restaurant serving fine dining contemporary Mediterranean dishes in a bright and stylish dining space. Executive chef and owner Paco Pérez created the menu at Enoteca to highlight high-quality, raw, and locally sourced ingredients in new ways. The result of the chef's work is an exciting selection that brings together traditional and contemporary Mediterranean influences. Enoteca Paco Pérez also boasts a cellar with over 700 wines to pair with your meal.

The restaurant isn't always open, however; Enoteca Paco Pérez operates as a tasting menu-only restaurant Wednesday through Saturday evenings. The coursed meal is €196 per person and includes an impressive array of chef-curated dishes like sea bass with black tea and marine escabeche sauce, prawns in fricandó, and aged pigeon with chestnuts and corn.

Last year I (Smetty the yacht spotter) took some pictures of the Rising Sun . Today, I spotted this little beauty, named “Samar” (Click on the pictures to enlarge or check the Samar yacht photo group on Flickr).

* Add your own Samar picture to the Samar Flickr group *

The first thing I want to know: “who is the owner and what are the specs?”. * Google, Google on the net *

The Western Morning News :

…the yacht, built at Devonport Management Limited’s yacht building arm Devonport Yachts, was built for a Kuwait-based millionaire businessman who is a senior figure in a company which specialises in the engineering and financial sectors. .. …the yacht will be called ‘Samar’, after the owner’s daughter. At nearly 77 metres (253ft), it is the biggest yacht to be built in the UK since the 125 metre Royal Yacht Britannia more than 50 years ago. Boasting five decks, accommodation for 12 passengers, 20 crew and four staff, a glass staircase running through the centre of the vessel, a fully-fitted gymnasium, a steam room and hot and cold pools on the upper deck, the boat is the epitome of luxury.

I see this family scene: “hun, I want to do some shopping, can we go there with our yachtie, do you want me to take the snoozy woozy little boat or shall we fly today?” The epitome of luxury. Mmm…

Exactly right Snotty,

To me this sounds like activities of an organisation to whom pres. Bush declared war.

Hi All, I worked on the 120 million pound boat, I have a load of pictures taken during its production. How do I post them, or who can I email a couple to so they can be posted.

Great Ship, 12 million in technology on the boat, the owner was really into his technology, so we kept adding and adding.

For a 120 million pounds you can buy a lot more (bigger) boat than the Samar. This one would rather be a 40 million yacht. Or there must be a lot of misterious technology on board.

Hi Matthew,

Stop kiddin’ us all. This vessel is not worth 120 mio and you know it. I don’t believe you worked on this ship because otherwise you wouldn’t post this mail for confidential reasons. You’re just tryin to fool us you naughty little boy 😉

That’s right Ann

* comment deleted by Smetty. This is my blog folks. Be nice here. Thx. *

Who is the copycat? … I did not wrote blog 155!

Strange reaction Francis!

I believe you’re trying to fool us all.

2 days ago, this ship entered the commercial port of La Rochelle (western France) and went into the drydock for some works under the waterline (so many gears under waterline, may be just replacing one of the underwater spotlights !)

Today, september 7th, this boat is in Bilbao, near of Guggenheim Museum

Hi Betty – FYI – Kutayba’s father died several years ago, he was called Yusuf – and trust me KYA is so not currently married – so doubtful that the wife was around. Though it may be possible that you went on board to deliver your goods – KYA is that kind of man.

Regards, Peter

Wat ‘subtiel’ van Peter! Tactvol! 😉

Thx Peter, I think the case Betty is closed now. In the end cheating will always be discovered.

I wonder what the goods of Betty may have cost.

Samar is now in Bilbao (Basque Country – Spain) since 6th of September (2006). When I asked to a member of he crew where they were from, he answeared me: “English”. They couldnt say were from, neither who the owner was. I googled and found this information, thnks!

Hi everybody! The “Samar” arrived 18h yesterday at Lisbon. Just marvelous! And as someone said, “I wonder what’s the owner doing here”?! The chopper stands still but the upper deck also holds a Mini Cooper. If only I could have a camera here…! Regards

Today, september 15th, this boat is in Lisboa, hope to take some pictures to post here 🙂

what a ship !!!!!

I know it’s big but surely they can’t drive round on the deck in a mini cooper Italian Job style.

To Snotty Yachty: You’re right. But somehow the Mini is down on the pier, maybe to go on shopping around Lisbon, or to go to the backery.

Hey there, this is a message for my friend Bob (the Pilot), just to say hello from the Chilean Extreme Patagonia, I met him some 13 years ago and all I can say is that he is the hell of a good friend, and one of his kind.

best regards from Chile… Roberto

As an ex naval captain and helicopter pilot with thousands of hous flying from ships I was very impressed, and a touch envious, by the Samar when I saw her in Lisbon Harbour today. Quite beautiful. Amazingly enough she is berthed only a few meters away from where The Tall Ships (including Christian Radich) were berthed in July. I was told the ships helicopter pilot is ex US Army, and the ship sails tonight for Barcelona. Sadly they were not in need of a First Lieutenant nor A helicopter pilot, ah well, back to the golf course!

Saw Samar in Gibraltar today. Thanks we were wondering where she was headed. We are also headed for Barcelona so we will have the privilege of seeing her again. An invite would be nice!!

Saw Samar this afternoon moored in Playa Flamenca, just outside Torrevieja. Now heading north. Pics available if wanted.

my sister reports she is currently docked on a criuse ship next to SAMAR at SAVONA harbour today the 20th September 2006.

The ship indeed belongs to Kuwaiti Kutayba Alghanim. I have friends who are leaving this week to meet up with it and sail with Mr. Alghanim.

Yeah right Chris Lewis.

Hope you believe it yourself. “…I have friends who…” How pathetic.

samar was in barcelona this morning. in the forum port.

How strange. I’ve seen Samar in Brussels this afternoon ?

Samar never ceases to amaze me, two places at once.

I see the boat on this monday 25/09/2006 here in Barcelona in the port of Forum.

I think Chris Lewis, who happens to be close friend of the owner, knows in which port the vessel is at any time. Go Chris!

Someone has to know the chap, why not Chris?

I worked for the Alghanim family in the eighties. At that time the primary family yacht was called “Daria”, which was also a beautiful boat with a helipad and was named after the daughter of a family friend. The staff that worked the various chalets, mansions and estates were an interesting a varied group from all countries. I had the opportunity to meet Yusef, the family patriarch, while he was still alive. Although he lived in a large mansion in Florida, I admired him for his simplicity. He had all finest things in the world at his disposal, but frequently he would just like to sit in the kitchen on a stool watching a small portable television while his maid worked around him. Kutayba was and is, of course, a business genius, who converted inherited millions into billions. Working around such wealth gave me many interesting stories that most humans will never get to experience.

M.V. Daria info: http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/6414/daria.htm

Daria’s new name is Avante IV http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:_xruR7E_3mkJ:yachts.monacoeye.com/files/category-21.html+Feadship+Daria&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=7

i saw the Samar still moored in Port Forum, Barcelona on Monday 30/10/06

16/11/06 he was still in Port Forum, Barcelona. I saw it and make some pictures.

This is my weblog * who ever you maybe be (using the same ip-adres and e-mail, but different screen names) *. Calling names doesn’t belong here.

Today my wife & I saw the Samar back in Plymouth, UK, the city where she was built. Currently she is anchored in Cawsand Bay in some unpleasent weather conditions – we wondered if maybe she is here for the winter? The UK has been lashed by severe gales over the past few days so I imagine the crew have had a very bumpy ride if they have come all the way from Spain – rather them than me!

It really is a lovely yacht – is it one of the biggest in the world, because seeing her at anchor she really does look huge?!

The Samar is in Plymouth for the winter . Will be in dry dock for some minor warranty work. An incredibly well built boat. Stunning and very quiet too due to same electric propulsion system as on QM2

I’m so excited to hear from you all were the hell the Samar will stay during the winter. I can’t sleep at night, this is so important for us all to know. Yes I will get a life in the end. Go on delete this Smetty!

the owner is Mr Algahnim.his previous boat was called Daria…

Yes she is in dry dock for the winter along with another…

I thunk this point needs to be stressed – This forum is for people who share an interest in Super yachts, either through work or being near the see etc. Those people who come on here to mock are actually the ones with the problems. If you’re not interested in the boats why bother coming on here?
