Navigation on the Waveney is relatively trouble free with good depths especially in middle channel. There are no channel markers but there may be shallower water towards the river banks. The river is tidal but flows and ranges are less severe between Oulton Dyke and Geldeston, please see tide tables .

There are three fixed bridges. Users must ensure that bridge heights are checked before navigating. Somerleyton Swing Bridge will open on request although there may be delays while trains clear the area.

Burgh Castle Reach There is good depth in the main channel with shallow areas near the banks especially inside the bends. Tidal flow can be strong.

Waveney Forest Reach - Good depth in the main channel with shallow areas near to the banks. Speed limit of 5mph through St Olaves where there are many moored boats and dykes. Tide at St Olaves Bridge can be very strong.

St Olaves Reach - Tides can be very strong at St Olaves Bridge which has clearance of 8ft at high tide. There are numerous moorings and private dykes up river and at the end of these Haddiscoe new cut joins the main river. Care must be taken as vessels may be joining the main river from the new cut or dykes. An old bridge pier stands in the middle of the river at Haddiscoe. Vessels should pass to the right of the pier.

Somerleyton Reach - Somerleyton Swing Bridge will open for vessels unable to pass under. Openings can be requested on VHF Ch12 or by giving 3 long blasts by horn when in sight of the bridge. Somerleyton bridge will swing on demand when there is one red flag flying from the control box. If two red flags are flying the bridge is inoperable. There may sometimes be a delay of up to 20 minutes to allow a train to pass. There are moorings or pontoons either side for those waiting for the bridge to open. There is a water ski zone from near Somerleyton Bridge to Oulton Dyke. All craft should exercise caution and be prepared for wash from ski boats.

Oulton Dyke and Oulton Broad Reach - Oulton Dyke has a 5mph speed limit and much of it is piled with timber piles. Two short dykes leading off Oulton Dyke are shallow with risk of grounding at low tide. Visitors should navigate along the north bank between the mooring buoys and shore when yachts are racing. Navigation is restricted during powerboat race meetings on Thursday evenings and some weekends during summer. Extreme caution must be used during powerboat events and patrol boats will give instructions to visiting craft.

Burgh St Peter Reach - There are areas of timber and steel piling and old fishing platforms in the reeds on the Suffolk bank. The inside of some bends can be fairly shallow.

Worlingham Reach - Some areas of bank are reinforced with matting and should be avoided by powered craft .

Aldeby Reach - The centre pier of an old rail bridge stands in the middle of the river at Stanley Carr. Vessels should pass the pier to the right side of the river. Some areas of bank are reinforced with matting and should be avoided by powered craft.

Beccles Reach - A 4mph speed limit is in force from before the sailing club through Beccles. Caution must be taken as the river is narrow with moorings and moving boats. There is dinghy racing at the sailing club most weekends. Rescue boats will usually assist and advise those passing through racing fleets. The new bridge at Beccles has 12ft clearance at high tide. There are moorings just before the bridge that are strictly reserved for de-masting and vessels unable to pass under. Between the bridges is Beccles Yacht Station (Waveney District Council) where moorings and facilities are available. The old bridge has limited clearance and is narrow. Mooring for those waiting to pass under the old bridge are at the yacht station and Beccles Lido. From May to September, water plants are common in the river at Beccles and there is typically a 3 metre margin left uncut on both sides of the channel. From the end of the bank-side moorings the river meanders through tree lined banks. Some areas of bank are reinforced with matting and should be avoided.

Geldeston Reach - From Barsham to Geldeston is mainly tree-lined and narrow with reasonable depths although water plant growth can be heavy between May and September. Typically a 3 metre margin is left uncut on both sides. Motor craft should avoid the banks as some areas are reinforced with matting. There are overhead wires (12m) as you approach Geldeston. Yachts with masts should consider whether they have enough air draft to proceed without lowering the mast. There is a 3mph speed limit from Geldeston wherry dyke to Geldeston footbridge.

Beccles is a charming market town on the banks of the River Waveney which is well worth a visit. Once a Saxon fishing port on the edge of a huge estuary, it today boasts picture postcard riverside houses and winding historic streets filled with shops and cafes.

St Michael’s Church, where Nelson’s parents married, dominates the town and a climb up its fabulous bell tower will reward you with breathtaking views across the Waveney Valley. Beccles Museum is a good place to learn about the town and Beccles Lido open air swimming pool is ideal for family fun. There are also some lovely riverside walks to enjoy.

The best way to visit the town is to moor in Beccles Quay. This large grassed area has children’s play equipment and a little cafe serving ice creams.

Take a short walk into the town centre to visit the magnificent St Micheal’s Church, which dates back to 1369. Naval hero Horatio Nelson’s parents, Catherine Suckling and Edmund Nelson, married in the church in 1749 and Elizabethan composer William Cobbold is also buried there.

Best of all is the church’s separate Bell Tower which ascends nearly 100ft to the heavens. Book a tour to climb the 122 steps to the tower’s rooftop and enjoy stunning views up to 20 miles away on a clear day. Easter to September, 01502 710711.

Beccles Museum is also worth a visit in the Grade 1 listed Leman House on Ballygate. Entry is free and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday afternoons from Good Friday until the end of October.

For a great family day out, head to Beccles Lido open air swimming pool which overlooks the River Waveney. It has a springboard, slide, inflatable aqua run, all weather awning and plenty of room to relax on sunloungers. Open late May to early September. 01502 713297.

Beccles is a great walking area and a popular choice for history and wildlife is the Beccles Marsh Trail. Three trails explore Beccles Marsh, which supports rare plants and wildlife in a network of dykes. It was bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth 1 to recognise Beccles’ importance to the wool trade.

For shopping, Beccles’ town centre has a good choice of quirky independent stores, gift shops and high street chains as well as plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Morrisons and Tesco supermarkets are located on George Westwood Way.

Top Tip:  You need to pass under Beccles Old Bridge to reach Geldeston Locks. If your cruiser has insufficient clearance, you can take the Big Dog Ferry from Beccles Lido to Geldeston Locks.

Visit Geldeston Lock

Cruise from Beccles to the limit of navigation at Geldeston Lock. The river here is one of the most unspoilt sections of the Broads and has crystal clear water that’s rich with plant and animal life. There are plenty of free Broads Authortity 24 hours moorings at the locks and one of the most atmospheric pubs on the Broads – The Locks Inn. Originally built as a mill keeper’s cottage in 1560, The Locks Inn has been pulling pints ever since the 17th century. While it serves gastro pub food today it still retains much of its old fashioned character. In fact, many locals can remember a time before the pub had electricity and proper road access! 01508 518414.

Geldeston – Side on mooring for six boats

Beccles Yacht Station (Beccles Quay) – Privately managed yacht station, where a mooring fee applies. Advanced booking recommended in school holidays by calling the Harbour Master. Electric hook up, toilets, showers and laundry facilities available. 01502 712225.

Eating Out:

Beccles Quay Cafe – Casual place for sandwiches, cakes and ice cream by the water with outside seating.

Twyford’s Cafe – Highly rated for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Located in a historic building with a secret garden on Exchange Square. 01502 710614.

We are planning on visiting Beccles Lido on Monday 17th August and intend mooring at the Yacht Station. How busy is it likely to be? I don't really want to reserve a mooring because if the weather is rubbish the plan will change.

We cannot get under the bridge, is the Yacht Station our only option or are there others moorings elsewhere?

There are limited BA free moorings before the new road bridge.

Matt

I reckon you will be fine to get moored there

SueH

We have always phoned and booked.  Mind you we are greedy wanting to be on the main river next to the power!

Never a problem though.

JanetAnne

I believe you will be fine on the 17th. I know the nights of the 14th and 15th are fully booked as its carnival weekend and there are a couple of boating events booked in as well but they will be well on their way by the Monday.

Keith I may wrong and if so apologise, but are those moorings not reserved for vessels unable to get under the bridge?

ranworthbreeze

I have only been able to moor at the 24 hour mooring on one occasion, it has been full, taped off for repairs etc. The rise and fall can be an issue especially for lower craft.

There is a reserved area for craft that can not get under the bridge but again they can struggle to get a mooring.

Another issue is the noise from the road bridge.

I would reserve a mooring in the Yacht Station and phone them if your plans do change.

SwanR

We always enjoy mooring at the yacht station and going for a wander around Beccles. Going in June we haven't needed to book but if I was wanting to go in August I would be tempted to book- it could be quite a long journey to get back up the Waveney to anywhere else were the yacht station to be full. Either that or be prepared to moor up quite early to be on the safe side.

good point that Jean. It's a couple of hours back to WRC if it's full. Think I'll book a spot.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

They are! (I can't find a pic I took a couple of years back of the notice board).

The Ranger was issuing tickets to peeps moored there last year who could get under the bridge.

Broads01

If you're able to pass through Beccles bridge there are limited moorings next to the swimming pool and its a nice spot.

JennyMorgan

JennyMorgan

The BA have tried it on, there is no legislation to uphold the mooring restrictions at that point. Noisy though, but mooring there saves you a tenner.

Viking23

good point that Jean. It's a couple of hours back to WRC if it's full...

Here lies the problem on the Southern Broads, if you are looking for mooring an hour before dusk, you might not have time to find another mooring if your chosen spot is full.

Luckily in the Autumn, when it gets dark early, there are generally less boats on the river, so better chance of finding somewhere, but not guaranteed of course.

The Southern Rivers, in my opinion, are blessed with many miles of 'wilderness' moorings along many stretches of river bank. Okay, so Beccles, when full, can be a problem but if you moor to the South shore anywhere between Burgh St Peters and Beccles there is a good footpath to Beccles. You may not be able to moor where you want to but there is no shortage of moorings, so long as you have a pair of rond anchors and a mudweight!

Planning to arrive at lunchtime so if the worst comes to the worst we'll have lots of time on our hands. And with WRC and Oulton Broad as backups i can't really lose!

Whats the air draft on your boat Jim

SPEEDTRIPLE

Unless you`re looking for moorings with services, ie, water and leccy hook up, there are i think 3 staithes between Beccles and WRC, all being BA 24 hour moorings. One is at Worlingham (i think that`s what it`s called?) on the North bank, and North Cove on the south bank. There is another not far from North Cove, but not sure what it`s called.

Air draft is 8ft 4 which is a shame as it's years since I've been to Geldeston.

We moored at North Cove in June and it was my favourite mooring of the week. Really lovely spot. But you only get two or three boats at each of those moorings so when it's busier in July and August I don't know whether they tend to be free or are a bit like Instead on the north - lucky to ever find the mooring free.

I think there's also another mooring just outside Beccles which is private land but there's an honesty box for leaving a donation for staying overnight.

There was one boat at Aldeby yesterday late morning and nothing at the other two..........

The city of Moscow opened its Metro service in 1935 with a single 11 km line connecting just thirteen stations, but it has since grown into the world’s fourth busiest transit system, spanning more than 300 kilometers and offering 188 stops along the way. The Moscow Metro was one of the USSR’s most extravagant architectural projects with the intention of building palaces for the people . Built when Stalin was in power, the metro’s artists and architects went about designing stations that were to epitomize the Russian word ‘svet’ , meaning radiance & brilliance and ‘svetloe budushchee’ – a radiant future. This project was used an opportunity to showcase the country’s power. With their reflective marble walls, high ceilings and grandiose chandeliers, many of Moscow’s Metro stations are likened to famous European palaces.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
