1994 Freedom 40/40 Tatanka is the ultimate performance cruiser. She is fast, stiff, well balanced, and comfortable in all conditions.  The Pedrick designs are thoroughly modern in hull form and way ahead of their time in sailing and living accommodation features.  The signature Pedrick designed "whale tail" keel and rudder provide excellent lift and a very responsive helm.  Tatanka is  well set up with large fully-battened mainsail (2012) with lazy jacks and also has the optional, self-tacking roller furling jib completes the sail inventory.  Sailing equipment includes Garman color GPS/Chartplotter at the helm as well Furuno Radar, Autohelm linear drive autopilot, with B&G and RayMarine sailing instruments.  Other gear includes an electric halyard winch and electric anchor windlass.Tatanka is the only FRESH WATER Freedom 40 to come available in years!

We drained and dried it. The motor starts and runs good. The lower unit is lake stained. The prop is bent and chipped. This unit comes to us due to being rolled over on the lift. On the bow the floor is broke on the casting deck and the carpet is ripped. The port side tin is popped out and dented. Going onto the port side the tin is dented in the bow and missing from the door. From the door to the stern the tin is popped out from the frame and dented. Moving on to the stern the tin looks to be in good shape except for some scratches and fading. Going on to the starboard the tin is dented in the stern and the door is missing. Going on to the inside all the seats are water logged and the back cushion covers are very loose and sagging. The vinyl on all the seats is stained and starting to crack. The carpet is worn. The back sun deck stern side storage lid is broke off. There is a porta potty located in the stern. The windshield is missing from the council. There is a cover for this unit but all the poles are missing. There is a dent on the starboard side toon. The port side toon appears to be in good shape. Good luck biding!

Dessert First is a beautiful example of the classic Gary Hoyt/ Halsey Herreshoff designed Cat Ketch.   Her traditional lines, comfortable layout, simple but powerful carbon fiber rig and exceptional sailing characteristics make her a vessel that any discriminating yachtsman would be proud to own.  She was built by the master craftsman at Tillotson/Pearson in Road Island and was the personal boat of Margaux Hemingway in the 1990's. 

Her centerboard design allows access to shallow anchorages with her 4'5" draft.  When the wind picks up, lower her board to 7'6" and you've got a stable cruiser that can point high into the wind and handle rough conditions with ease.  I sailed alongside her for a photo session in 20-26 kts of breeze.  She points and sails beautifully to windward.  On a run or a reach, she is even more impressive and left my cutter in her wake.

The vessel features two ways to enter the cabin.  Entering from the main aft companionway, gains access to the aft stateroom and chart table area.  The aft stateroom is home to the main electrical panels and engine access under the ladder.  There is access to the single head to port, and a walk through to the galley forward.  The galley is L-shaped, with a separate freezer/ refrigeration to port.  Walking forward gains access to the main salon with a straight settee to port, and an L-shaped settee to starboard. There is a drop leaf table offset to starboard.   Walking further forward there is another private stateroom with a v-berth.  

Forward Stateroom

The forward stateroom features a v-berth with filler cushion, a large opening hatch, two opening port, hanger lockers, drawer storage, and access to the chain locker forward. The cushion upholstery was renewed in 2012.

Aft Stateroom

The aft stateroom has a full size berth to port, and a single berth and navigation desk to starboard.  There is access to the Perkins diesel under the companionway ladder, and new electrical panels on the aft bulkhead.  Access to the galley is forward and a private entrance to the head is forward and to port.  Water tanks are located under either berth, and a 12,000 btu air conditioner is mounted inside the starboard side hanging locker.

Freedom 40 for Sale. Designed by Gary Hoyt (former Finn Olympian and Sun World Champion), "Simena" is simply a great offshore cruising yacht.  A cat ketch, her innovative freestanding spar design has also stood the test of time and in 2004 the Freedom 40 became one of just 26 boats to ever be inducted into the American Sailing Hall of Fame.Elegant and head turning, "Simena" is a later design Freedom 40 (1985) with an aft rather than a centre cockpit, carbon fibre masts rather than the original aluminium, and fully battened sails mounted on tracks, instead of the original wooden wishbone booms and wraparound sails.A true blue water yacht, her sturdy balsa core construction, long keel and low centre of gravity make her very stable and seaworthy in all sea conditions.  She is ideal for sailing short handed or with an inexperienced crew and has a good turn of speed off the wind.  An electric winch handle makes raising the sails easy and an electric windlass with a foot switch handles the anchoring.  The cockpit is comfortable and the decks are wide and clear with all lines running aft to the cockpit.In 2010, "Simena" underwent a 7-month refit, with over £60,000 spent on a new teak deck, engine and elecrical equipment upgrades, rewiring and plumbing upgrades and lots of new equipment including a Hydrovane self-steering system, safty gear, rigging, ground tackle and navigation aids.  Below deck also saw a great number of improvements including brand new headlinings, new cushions and upholstery throughout, a new custom built black water tank (as yet unused!) and countless other upgrades and new equipment.  A full list of work undertaken is available on request, along with the 2010 survey and update.Her first owner had her delivered to Turkey where she cruised the Aegean before returning to the Channel Islands and a new owner who tackled the Atlantic Circuit with her.  She then moved to Holland before returning again to Cornwall for some cold water cruising and a £32,000 update.  In 2010 her current owners sailed her from Plymouth across Biscay and have been gently cruising with their little girl (now 5) in the Med ever since.  

"Simena" is a great boat for anyone wanting a bigger, well spec'd, ocean capable yacht which is easily sailed and has a roomy interior, vast storage space and large water and fuel tanks for increased independence.  She and her current owners have looked after each other extremely well but they are now reluctantly settling ashore and she needs new owners to begin a new chapter...British flagged and VAT paid, she is currently in the water at Menton-Garavan Marina, on the French Cote d'Azur, and priced for a quick sale.

Accommodation

Sleeps 7 in 1 Forward and 1 Aft Cabin with Double Berths and 3 Single Berths (one very small) in the Saloon.  A Pilot Berth could be reinstated if required – the space is currently occupied by a large dry storage cupboard which originally housed an engine-driven freezer.

The Aft Cabin has a Double Berth, Hanging Locker, Porthole to the Cockpit and Ensuite Head with Shower & Handbasin.  The Forward Cabin has a Double 'V' Berth, Hanging Cupboard and Seat and Ensuite Head with Shower & Handbasin.  (New Showers, Drains, Pump Assemblies and Pipework were fitted to both Heads in 2010).  Headroom in the cabins is a very decent 6'4"/196cm and 6'5"/198cm.

The Interior is constructed in teak with a Walk in 'U' Shaped Galley with Taylors 041 2 Burner Gas Cooker with Oven, Hotplate & Grill (Reconditioned in 2010 with All New Parts).  The Galley also boasts Twin Stainless Steel Sinks and a deep Isotherm 4201 top-opening Fridge (New 2000), along with some clever storage of cutlery and dishes.  A full gas inspection, service and upgrade were also carried out in 2010. (3 gas bottles are stored in the cockpit and externally drained.)

The Saloon area is well planned to allow easy access forward, whilst retaining maximum dining/seating.   Light prisms added during the deck refit have also increased the light below deck and added coolness in summer and warmth in winter.  3 ECS Sun Air Solar Fans were also fitted in 2010.  There is a Teak Cockpit Dining Table and a lovely Taylors Brass Diesel Cabin Heater (fully reconditioned in 2010 with a new Burner Assembly and Flue Deck fitting).  There is also a decent-sized Chart Table with Chart Light & Seat.  There are also a great many lockers and storage spaces throughout the boat.

Description.

Freedom 40, built 1980. From the design boards of Gary Holt comes this immediately recognisable and uniquely designed pioneering sailing yacht from the 80s. To those unfamiliar with the Freedom 40, the lack of standing rigging becomes instantly noticeable as soon as you step onboard, making for a far less cluttered deck. Westerbeke 42Four 39hp diesel engine (1991), Sleeps 4 in 2 cabins plus 3 in saloon. Located and ready for viewings at the Basimakopoulos Shipyard.

Owners comments Purchased as a sail-away yacht in 1980 with interior mouldings fitted. The owner carried out subsequent interior carpentry to a professional standard. Classic layout with two forepeak bunks, toilet and washbasin (and shower) section, saloon, and galley vis-a-vis a large navigation table. Separate aft cabin with double bed.

Solid hull, no osmosis presence since a minor treatment in 1987. The vessel hit a channel marker in 1982, which took out a fist-sized chunk of GRP from the stem above the waterline. Repaired and invisible now.

The foresail wishbone was replaced in 2007 after sustaining damage during an unplanned gybe in storm conditions off the southern Spanish. No other damage to the vessel.

Owners comments An extensive set of spare parts will follow the sale of the vessel, including propeller anodes. Careful service was carried out by the owner, including yearly engine oil changes. Water pump impellers, diesel filters, belts etc... all changed to the manufacturer's recommendation and logged on the boat.

The wiring harness of the engine was entirely replaced in 2009. The seawater to the primary cooling water heat exchanger was replaced with an OEM part in 2010. A new starter battery will be installed in May 2022 to allow test and demonstration runs of the engine.

Owners comments The domestic power supply is 24v. All lamps are retrofitted to LED operation, with the exception of the steaming light at the top of the mast. 24v is provided by two 12v l00Ah standard batteries connected in series.

Solar panels are sufficiently sized to run the fridge and pressurised water systems indefinitely. An Autohelm autopilot was fitted in the late 1980s but this is no longer functional and requires replacement.

Owners comments Currently, Gazella is fitted with the refurbished first set of sails, manufactured by Dolphin Sails UK. Sails are wrapped around, i.e. double layered and are much less stressed than modern Marconi rigged sloops.

A set of newer wrap-around sails will be included in the sale. These are made from slightly heavier fabric and are more suited to windier locations. Mainsails are both equal in size, although not exactly interchangeable, and about 350 sq ft each in size.

They can be reefed by single line slab reefing, reducing sail area by about one-third. Typical reefing is to drop the entire mizzen and just sail by foresail alone.

Gazella can set an asymmetric spinnaker or light weather staysail from the mizzen top, using running backstays to support the mizzen mast. Spinnaker is pale blue and white ve1tical striped, ca. 800 sq ft in size. The light weather staysail is about 500 sq ft. A heavy-duty storm sail can also be set from the mizzen top and requires the foresail boom to be dropped to the deck.

The freestanding rig with wrap-around sails and wishbone booms that are hoisted is an excellent low-effort rig, i.e. can be sailed with minimal winch use. The main winch is only used to pull up the last 25% of the sail. The rig is self-tacking, making upwind passages simple. Beam reach to downwind legs are best. The wishbone booms naturally steady the sails and provide superb stability.

Owners Comments Most of the interior woodwork and carpentry were installed by the owner. Varnish is in good condition. Cushions were reupholstered in Turkey ca. 2014 and are in good condition. Lighting is both electric and by an Aladdin paraffin lamp.

Owners comments The "classic" Taylor cooker runs on paraffin. There is no gas onboard Gazella. The fridge compressor and cooling system is Isotherm from 2015 (replacing a previous 20-year-old Isotherm system). The pressurised fresh water system, hot and cold. Foot-operated saltwater tap in the galley.

Owners Comments Gazella was intentionally rigged as a "low tech" vessel to avoid digital obsolescence in more remote cruising areas (read: Portugal 1980s and 90's). Navigation is paper-based and by portable GPS plotters. A reliable echosounder and high-quality compass will be included: no AIS, no radar, no anemometers and no onboard wifi.

An Autohelm autopilot was fitted in the late 1980s but this is no longer functional and requires replacement.
