For all three of her big screen appearances, the Enterprise-E was slightly modified between movies.

As the script for Star Trek: Insurrection called for the appearance of the Enterprise-E's captain's yacht, the Cousteau, designer John Eaves was given the opportunity to flesh out part of the ship that had previously been left relatively vague. With the traditional docking point for an auxiliary craft taken up by the Enterprise-E's torpedo launcher, Eaves modified the launcher to accommodate the Cousteau, utilizing the lines of the weapon to serve as the underside of the yacht.

Before her next and final appearance in 2002's Star Trek Nemesis, Eaves yet again reworked the Enterprise-E, smoothing out the transition between the saucer section and secondary hull and adding several new photon torpedo launchers and phaser strips for her eventual battle with the Scimitar. Eaves also revised the ship's warp nacelle pylons, giving them a more dramatic upward and forward sweep.

Despite all these changes, Eaves had one more round of revisions planned for the aftermath of the Enterprise's battle with Shinzon. As Star Trek Nemesis was originally intended to end with the Enterprise-E returning to service for more films, Eaves planned a new paint scheme and redrew parts of the ship's hull to bring it more in line with his drawings for Star Trek: First Contact.

While John Eaves produced concept artwork depicting this re-revamped Enterprise-E, the producers decided to end Star Trek Nemesis with the ship still in dry dock and the updated paint scheme and configuration ultimately went unused.

On stardate 49027.5, the Sovereign -class Enterprise -E, seen as the pinnacle of Starfleet ship design, was launched from San Francisco Fleet Yards , with Captain Jean-Luc Picard in command once more. Much of the crew of the Enterprise -D had been reassigned there, including almost the entire senior staff . The sole exception was Lieutenant Commander Worf , who had already transferred to the space station Deep Space 9 . ( Star Trek: First Contact ; DS9 : " The Way of the Warrior ", " Trials and Tribble-ations ")

The Borg threat [ ]

After almost a year in space , the Enterprise was ordered to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone during the second Borg incursion . Starfleet was officially concerned about possible Romulan military action since many of the available ships had been diverted to fight the Borg , but in reality, Starfleet was concerned about Picard's presence at the battle.

Return to Earth [ ]

However, shortly after the Federation fleet engaged the Borg cube , Picard disobeyed orders and returned to Earth to assist the fleet. Once there, Picard became aware of a battle-induced weakness in the Borg ship due to his residual link to the Collective and ordered all the ships in the fleet to concentrate their fire on that section of the ship. As a result, the Borg vessel was destroyed and the Battle of Sector 001 was a victory for Starfleet.

Journey to 2063 [ ]

Before the Borg cube was destroyed, it launched a second vessel towards Earth. This ship created a temporal vortex and traveled back to the year 2063 in order to stop Zefram Cochrane from launching his historic warp ship , the Phoenix . Their hope was to prevent first contact with the Vulcans and assimilate Earth before the Federation could be formed to resist them.

The Enterprise , protected from the alterations in the timeline by a temporal wake within the vortex, chased the Borg into the past and destroyed their ship and sent an away team to help Cochrane repair the Phoenix .

However, the ship's sensors and shields were damaged during the trip through the vortex and, unbeknownst to the crew , several Borg drones transported aboard the Enterprise before their ship exploded. They began to assimilate the ship, beginning with main engineering and sickbay on Deck 16 and converting the corridors into a Borg configuration, complete with regeneration alcoves and assimilation chambers . On Picard's order, Lieutenant Commander Data locked out the main computer with a fractal encryption code to prevent the Borg from fully seizing control of the Enterprise . The Borg established their collective in engineering and cut primary power to all other decks, cutting the Enterprise off from the away team still down on the surface . The Borg were able to swiftly overrun the defense checkpoints set up by the Starfleet crew on Decks 26 through 11, assimilating the crew as they progressed and seizing control of such sections as hydroponics , Stellar cartography , deflector control and the shuttlebays . They also attempted to build an interplexing beacon on the particle emitter of the deflector dish to contact the Borg Collective of that time period.

A three-man team led by Captain Picard stopped the beacon from being completed by separating the dish from the ship by disengaging the magnetic locks and destroying it. The Borg changed tactics and continued to overrun the defense checkpoints, assimilating the ship up to Deck 5 with the intent to fully assimilate the vessel . The Borg's ability to adapt to the handheld weapons of the Enterprise crew made stopping them impossible and Picard realized that the fight was a lost cause. After great consideration, he reluctantly ordered the evacuation of the ship via the escape pods and activated the ship's auto-destruct sequence to prevent the Borg from interfering with the Phoenix flight.

Picard eventually confronted the Borg Queen in main engineering, only to find, to his horror, that the Borg had apparently coerced Data into collaborating with them. He aborted the auto-destruct sequence and entered the encryption codes into the main computer, effectively giving the Borg Queen command of the Enterprise . On the Queen's instructions, Data fired three quantum torpedoes at the Phoenix , ostensibly intending to destroy it. However, the torpedoes narrowly missed their target and Data revealed that he had in fact simply been deceiving the Borg. He ruptured one of the plasma coolant tanks , flooding engineering with plasma coolant and liquefying the Borg Queen and all the drones in engineering. With the death of the Borg Queen, the remaining Borg onboard were disabled, which allowed Data and Picard to recapture the vessel.

The Enterprise crew was successful in helping Cochrane make his flight and instigate First Contact with Vulcans . Using the gravitational field of Luna allowed the Enterprise to remain undetected by the Vulcan ship and the Enterprise was able to recreate the vortex used by the Borg to return to 2373 where the Borg components were removed, the ship repaired and subsequently returned to service. The Briar Patch [ ]

With the Federation Diplomatic Corps attempting to negotiate an end to the Dominion War , the Enterprise was relegated to a diplomatic role, much to the dissatisfaction of Captain Picard. In 2375 , the Enterprise was conducting a diplomatic mission with the Evora , a new Federation protectorate species and was scheduled to resolve a territorial dispute in the Goren system when her crew became embroiled in a plot by the Son'a , assisted by Starfleet Admiral Dougherty , to forcibly remove the Ba'ku from their isolated homeworld in the Briar Patch .

The Son'a turned out to be vengeful former Ba'ku who had been exiled from the planet after a failed coup a century prior . They planned to harvest metaphasic radiation from the planet 's ring system and needed Starfleet's cooperation to carry out the plan. Captain Picard felt the relocation of the Ba'ku was a severe violation of the Prime Directive and resigned his commission, leading a team of Enterprise crewmembers to the Ba'ku planet to prevent their capture and removal.

Commander William T. Riker was instructed to take the Enterprise and contact the Federation Council to alert them of Admiral Dougherty's treachery. However, the Enterprise was required to navigate an area of space known as the Briar Patch in order to contact Starfleet Command . This area disrupted communications as well as the ship's warp drive .

The Battle of the Briar Patch [ ]

Two Son'a battle cruisers were sent by Ahdar Ru'afo to intercept the Enterprise before she left the Briar Patch and severely damaged the ship in the process. The warp core was ejected in order to seal a dangerous tear in subspace created by the isolytic weaponry of the Son'a.

Riker was able to outwit the Son'a by collecting metreon gas native to the Briar Patch then venting it behind the ship. When the Son'a used their weapons, the gas exploded, destroying one ship and severely damaging the other. Geordi La Forge half-jokingly commented that the tactic could become known as the Riker Maneuver . The Enterprise later returned to the Ba'ku planet to aid Captain Picard disarming the Son'a collector . They ran into Ru'afo's flagship on their way there and Commander Riker pretended to ram into the flagship but instead flew over it and used its phaser banks to fire at it. When the collector started to blow up, the Enterprise beamed up Picard and left Ru'afo to be destroyed in the collector while it blew up. The Enterprise later left the Briar Patch to leave for Earth. Continuing voyages [ ]

The Enterprise visited Earth for several days in 2376 , around the time the Pathfinder Project made contact with the USS Voyager and conducted a mission about seven light years from Earth the following year . According to Deanna Troi , it was an important mission, but the objective was never discussed. ( VOY : " Pathfinder ", " Life Line ")

Sometime between 2375 and 2379 the Enterprise underwent a major refit . Four additional aft -facing photon torpedo tubes were added, along with one more forward-facing tube: a twin launcher aft of the bridge , a single launcher above the aft hangar deck and a single launcher at the forward base of the bridge terracing.

The bridge was refitted with handrails and the consoles were improved across the port and starboard walls with more detailed displays. Additionally, new nacelle pylons were fitted at that time, slightly longer, broader, and more sharply swept than the originals and fitted with four additional phaser arrays . ( Star Trek Nemesis )

Mission to Romulus [ ]

In 2379 , the Enterprise returned to Earth for the wedding of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi. She departed for Betazed , where another ceremony, a traditional Betazoid wedding, was scheduled.

While en route, the ship detected unusual positronic signals from the Kolarin system , discovering another Soong-type android , the prototype B-4 . Shortly following, the Enterprise was ordered to Romulus for a meeting with the new Praetor , Shinzon , who apparently wanted to initiate peace talks. Both the discovery of B-4 and the peace overtures turned out to be a ruse to capture Captain Picard and discover tactical positions of Starfleet vessels.

Enterprise faces and collides with the Scimitar

Once it became clear Shinzon was going to use his starship, the Scimitar , to destroy all life on Earth and wage war on the Federation, the Enterprise was to join Star Fleet Battle Group Omega and make a stand against Shinzon.

Battle of the Bassen Rift [ ]

Shinzon caught up to the Enterprise in the Bassen Rift and, in the ensuing confrontation , the vessel was severely damaged, including a major hull breach on the bridge, destroying the viewscreen and controls and disabling the warp core .

As a last resort, Picard ordered Counselor Deanna Troi to take control of the Enterprise and have it ram the Scimitar , resulting in the loss of much of the saucer section 's forward area. The collision disabled the Scimitar , but Shinzon, driven by vengeance , activated his deadly thalaron weapon and trained it on the Enterprise .

The weapon was overloaded, and the Scimitar was destroyed due to interference from Commander Data, who sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise , Picard and, indirectly, Earth.

The 2380s [ ]

By 2381 , Captain Picard was promoted to admiral and left the Enterprise to spearhead the construction and deployment of a massive transport fleet intended to aid the evacuation of the Romulus system before its sun went supernova in 2387 . ( PIC : " Remembrance "; LD : " The Stars At Night ")

In 2384 , the Enterprise was part of a Federation armada sent to intercept the USS Protostar , when it was intentionally attacked by the living construct released by Asencia . ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ")

Later, after the Protostar was destroyed, the ship was seen wrecked, with numerous gashes in the hull and completely dark, but somewhat intact. ( PRO : " Supernova, Part 2 ")

In 2401 , while taking the rebuilt Enterprise -D from the Fleet Museum , La Forge mentioned they "obviously" couldn't take the Enterprise -E, something that Worf said "was not [his] fault", alluding to an incident rendering the ship unusable. ( PIC : " Võx ")

The next USS Enterprise , an Odyssey -class starship USS Enterprise -F was launched and would be in service during the late 24th century. ( PIC : " The Next Generation ")

Technical information [ ]

The Enterprise -E at warp

In her original configuration, the Enterprise -E was under 700 meters long and had 24 decks according to Picard, although Deck 26 was reported as being controlled by the Borg. She was equipped with twelve phaser arrays and five torpedo tubes .

The main bridge of the Enterprise

By 2379 , the Enterprise -E had undergone at least one refit, including four additional phaser arrays and five additional torpedo tubes. The number of decks was also increased by five to a minimum of 29. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

Sections included deflector control, Stellar cartography , hydroponics (on deck 11), and one sickbay ward. Main engineering and sickbay were on Deck 16. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

The ship could be controlled by a manual steering column located on the bridge. ( Star Trek: Insurrection ) She was also the first Enterprise to be equipped with an Emergency Medical Hologram . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

The Enterprise 's forward shuttlebay

The Enterprise carried a newer design of shuttlecraft as well as numerous other forms of transportation, including a warp-capable captain's yacht , the Cousteau , ( Star Trek: Insurrection ) and a special multipurpose shuttlecraft, the Argo . ( Star Trek Nemesis ) The yacht was installed as a part of the saucer section and detached upon deployment. Other auxiliary craft were launched from two shuttlebays , one at the aft end of the secondary hull and another near the aft end of the primary hull.

Background information [ ]

A Galaxy -class Enterprise -E

Following Star Trek Generations , the six-foot filming model for the Galaxy -class USS Enterprise -D had been modified to have the registry number read "NCC-1701-E". Penny Juday , the archivist at Paramount Pictures , had no explanation for this change as of 19 October 2001. ( TNG Season 2, Disc 6 : "Inside Starfleet Archives"). It turned out that the change was done at ILM by John Goodson prior to crating up the model after completion of Star Trek Generations , presumably on the assumption that the new Enterprise might be a Galaxy -class ship as well and having the number changed over already would save whoever did the special effects the trouble of having to change it over themselves. ( Industrial Light & Magic: Into the Digital Realm , p. 60)

The Enterprise -E was, in fact, the only replacement for a previously-destroyed "hero" ship that was not of the same class as its predecessor, as opposed to USS Enterprise -A (and its alternate reality counterpart ) , the USS Defiant and the Delta Flyer . It was principally designed by John Eaves under the supervision of Herman Zimmerman . Using Eaves's sketches, Rick Sternbach drafted the blueprints for a ten-foot physical model. Eaves and Zimmerman also supervised the interior design of the bridge, engineering and corridors , although many sets from Star Trek: Voyager were also reused during Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection . Though the Enterprise -E was mentioned in several episodes of Voyager , the ship was never seen outside of the films. However, the interior of the ship is visible in a communication with Deanna Troi in VOY : " Life Line " as well as a turbolift interior built for the films which was re-purposed for the Enterprise -D in ENT : " These Are the Voyages... ".

The ten-foot physical model, constructed under the supervision of John Goodson at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), was used for visual effects shots during Star Trek: First Contact , alongside a CGI version. In Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek Nemesis , CGI versions of the ship completely replaced the physical model.

The Nemesis CGI model included several modifications designed by John Eaves. In addition to the new weapons mentioned above, the warp pylons were slightly modified and the connection between the primary and secondary hulls near the main shuttlebay was made more sleek.

The model of the Enterprise -E from Star Trek: First Contact (Lot #107) was sold at the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction on October 5, 2006 for US$132,000 including the buyer's premium (the winning bid was US$110,000). [6]

There has been some confusion about the number of decks on the Enterprise -E. The construction blueprints of the filming miniature created for Star Trek: First Contact explicitly label 23 decks. In the film, Picard told Lily Sloane that the ship had 24 decks, while the master systems display on the bridge allows either interpretation. Earlier on, however, Daniels had reported that the Borg are in control of Decks 26 through 11. Michael and Denise Okuda say in their text commentary on the film, during the scene in which Picard tells Lilly about the 24 decks: " Unfortunately, earlier in this film, we are told that the ship has at least 26 decks. We can't imagine that Picard doesn't know his own ship, so we theorize that the other two decks are top secret for some reason. Either that, or his memory was affected by his earlier Borg assimilation. It certainly couldn't be a goof, because the design of the ship changed slightly during filming. "

In Star Trek Nemesis , the Remans beam onto Deck 29. This could mean that Picard did not tell Lily the truth and there are actually more than 24 decks, or that more decks were added to the ship prior to Star Trek Nemesis . It may also be the case that Picard was counting only finished decks, as there could have been decks left unfinished for future expansion. Also, there was the possibility that Picard may have intentionally withheld or lied about certain aspects of the Enterprise -E design in the event that Lily was assimilated by the Borg.

Also in Nemesis , the Reman Viceroy fell several decks down a maintenance shaft. Because the Viceroy and the other Remans boarded the ship on Deck 29, it had been assumed that the ensuing battle took place on Deck 29 and that the Viceroy fell from that deck, implying that there could be 35 or more decks, or that the normal deck scheme was altered in some way that the ship could have more named decks than it measured in height.

This was not the case as signage on the corridors where the phaser fight between the Remans and the Enterprise officers took place indicate they were actually on Deck 9. This suggested that the two parties encountered each other about halfway to their destinations ( Enterprise officers to Deck 29, the Remans to the bridge on Deck 1).

It is apparent from lineup charts that every new starship Enterprise is slightly longer than the previous one. In Star Trek: First Contact , Picard informs Lily Sloane that the Enterprise -E is "almost seven hundred meters long", in accordance with its intended size of 2,248 feet (685 meters). John Eaves describes the rationale as follows:

When the "E" had a final approved design, we drew up a chart of all the Enterprises in profile. Herman [Zimmerman] and I set down a whole bunch of cutouts of the "E" in various sizes to see where this new ship should scale with the others. We found one size that looked appropriate and we put a scale to its length and that would be 2,248 feet. Rick [Sternbach] was waiting to do the blueprints and add his creativity to the design, so we gave him a drawing with this one measurement. From there he sized the whole ship ... [7]

By January 7, 1997, the following dimensions from Rick Sternbach had been added to FAQ: A History of Ships Named Enterprise: [8]

The same length, beam and height (in meters) appear on the SciPubTech poster from around the same time. In addition, the length of 2,248 feet is listed in at least three comparison charts prepared for Star Trek: First Contact . [9] It can also be seen in the charts prepared for Star Trek: Insurrection . [10] The Star Trek Nemesis size chart puts it at 2,250 feet, consistent with a size revision during either the filmed or the unfilmed stage of redesign. [11] [12]

Apocrypha [ ]

In the novel Ship of the Line , the Enterprise was given to Captain Morgan Bateson for its shakedown cruise , which included war games near the Klingon border. Along for the ride, as temporary chief engineer, was Montgomery Scott .

Some missions of the Enterprise during the Dominion War were featured in Behind Enemy Lines , Tunnel Through the Stars and Tales of the Dominion War . In the DS9 Millennium book series, the Enterprise was destroyed at the Battle of Rigel VII ( β ) in an alternate future that the intrepid heroes of Deep Space 9 later prevented.

Star Trek: A Time to... , set during the year leading up to Star Trek Nemesis , featured the Enterprise being involved in a major political scandal that disgraces the ship and her crew for much of the coming year; the final duology in that series features the Enterprise being ordered to lead an invasion and occupation of a sovereign planet, with resemblance to the current real life world political situation at the time the novels were written. A "TNG relaunch" of sorts followed the Enterprise 's activities after Nemesis ; the first book in the series, Death in Winter , was released in September 2005 .

The novel Resistance established that before he left the Enterprise for the Titan , Commander Riker christened this Enterprise 's version of the crew lounge , or Ten Forward , as the "Happy Bottom Riding Club," a name Worf absolutely hated and refused to use under any circumstances. The name for the lounge was derived from a similar watering hole that old Earth astronauts used to frequent. It also established that every ship's computer that was built during the last decade had encrypted information about Romulan cloaking technology, which could be decrypted in case of emergency using an admiral's code and thus enabled the crew to build a cloaking device. In Resistance the crew separated the saucer section from the engine section (a feat this Enterprise had previously not done) and then cloaked the engine section to engage a Borg cube. During Resistance , Worf was promoted to the official first officer after acting in the position in an unofficial capacity during the ship's reconstruction after its confrontation with the Scimitar . In Q&A , an encounter with Q revealed that his past contact with the crew had been to prepare them for an encounter with "Them ( β )", a race far above even the Q, with Picard's response convincing Them that the universe deserved to exist. The novel Before Dishonor allied the crew of the Enterprise with Spock and Seven of Nine as they are forced to reactivate the original planet killer after Admiral Janeway was assimilated and became the new Queen of a Borg super-cube, the confrontation ending with the loss of Pluto , the destruction of the cube and Janeway's apparent death . The Destiny miniseries culminated in the final destruction of the Borg after the Titan learns their true origin, but the Federation was left devastated by the subsequent invasion , with much of the later novels focusing on the role the Enterprise will play in the reconstruction amid the creation of the Typhon Pact ( β ), an "anti-Federation" consisting of some of the Federation's most notorious adversaries, including the Romulans, the Tholians and the Breen . After the events of The Fall miniseries, the Enterprise was sent on a new mission of exploration.

In the Star Trek: Picard tie-in prequel, The Last Best Hope , Worf was given command of the Enterprise following Picard's promotion to admiral and on his personal recommendation, as Starfleet has reservations in light of Worf's actions in DS9 : " Change of Heart ".

In the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (which was printed before Star Trek: First Contact ), it was speculated that the Enterprise -E might be a Nova -class ship.

The Enterprise -E in Countdown , Issue 2

In Star Trek: Countdown , a tie-in to the 2009 Star Trek film, the Enterprise -E was still active as of 2387 with Data , having been revived after successfully imprinting his neural network into B-4 's existing CPU succeeding Picard as captain .

The timeline for Star Trek Online followed the storyline in the Countdown comic series, with Data as captain into the 25th century . The timeline only mentioned that the Enterprise -E left service around 2408, but its ultimate fate was unclear; however, by 2409, a new Odyssey -class ( β ) vessel was christened Enterprise ( β ) (NCC-1701-F), implying that her predecessor was decommissioned or destroyed. The short story "Unexpected Honor", written for issue 40 of Star Trek Magazine in May 2012, revealed that the Enterprise -E was destroyed in an ambush by the Undine at Starbase 236 ( β ) in 2408; among the survivors was Captain Data, who retired from Starfleet to take up teaching on Earth.

The Enterprise had also featured in many apocryphal productions, including the strategy games Star Trek: Armada , Star Trek: Armada II , Star Trek: Bridge Commander , Star Trek: Starfleet Command III , Star Trek: Elite Force II , Star Trek: Legacy , and, most recently, Star Trek Online .

Star trek: every captain of the enterprise.

Star Trek has featured many starships named Enterprise. Along with Kirk and Picard, here's every Enterprise Captain from each movie and TV series.

Here is a breakdown of all USS Enterprise Captains across the various Star Trek movies, live-action series, comics, and books. Beginning with Star Trek: The Original Series , the Starship Enterprise has been at the very heart of the enduring sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. Of course, the two most famous Captains of the Enterprise are James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who shared the big screen together in 1994's Star Trek Generations, but Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is quickly achieving greatness in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek has introduced other successful spinoffs set on different starships like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery , as well as the space station-based Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . But, in the eyes of many fans, it isn't truly Star Trek unless it's about the Enterprise . The men and women who have commanded the Enterprise rank among the greatest heroes in Star Trek, because they know that when they sit in that chair, they can make a real difference. These are the accomplishments of all USS Enterprise Captains from every TV show, movie, and alternate reality.

The 22nd Century - USS Enterprise NX-01

Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) - Star Trek: Enterprise 's titular starship was the first United Earth starship that could travel at Warp 5. Captain Archer commanded it during its missions which created pivotal alliances that ultimately led to the founding of Star Trek 's United Federation of Planets, which Archer presided over in 2161 – marking him among the most important of all USS Enterprise Captains.

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NX-0002

Admiral/Captain Charles Rasmussen - A Federation Starfleet Admiral and instructor at Starfleet Academy, Charles Rasmussen captained the Constitution-class ship NX-0002, during which Rasmussen also sacrificed his life to save his crew. This occurs in an issue of the Star Trek: The Original Series comics called "Shakedown."

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Captain/Admiral Robert April - Captain April first appeared in Star Trek: The Animated Series , where he was voiced by James Doohan. In the 23rd century, Robert April was the first Captain of the Constitution -class USS Enterprise NCC-1701 deep space heavy cruiser when it launched in 2245. Christopher Pike was his First Officer during the starship's first five-year mission. Admiral April (Adrian Holmes) is a recurring character in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Captain/Fleet Captain Christopher Pike - The Captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Christopher Pike leads a new five-year mission of exploration. Pike counts Enterprise legends like Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) among his crew. In a few years, Fleet Captain Pike will suffer a horrific accident that leaves him trapped in a wheelchair. Jeffrey Hunter played Pike, Leonard Nimoy played Spock, and Majel Barrett played Number One in the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage."

Vice Admiral/Captain Katrina Cornwell (Jayne Brook) - Starfleet Vice Admiral Katrina Cornwell temporarily assumed command of the USS Enterprise and then later transferred it back to Pike in 2258. This was part of the efforts to keep the Enterprise out of the war with the Klingons. At the Battle near Xahea, Cornwell ends up sacrificing her life in order to save the ship from an undetonated photon torpedo. Before that, in 2257, Cornwell also temporarily commanded the USS Discovery.

Captain/Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) - The most legendar y Enterprise Captain of the 23rd century, Kirk's five-year mission was seen in Star Trek: The Original Series. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) held the dual role of the Enterprise 's First Officer and Science Officer. Kirk's Starship Enterprise engaged in numerous pivotal missions that resulted in Kirk's promotion to Admiral at the end of his voyages. Outside of the main series and movies (and often even outside of the Star Trek universe), Captain James T. Kirk continues to be referenced in animated series such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Captain Zarlo - In the Star Trek comic book series, Kirk gets assigned to take on a secret mission against the Klingons on the planet of Mobita, and Captain Zarlo gets assigned to replace Kirk as Captain of the Enterprise.

Captain Willard Decker (Stephen Collins) - In Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Captain Will Decker was in command of the retrofitted Starship Enterprise when Admiral Kirk demoted him to First Officer and took command of the mission to intercept V'Ger. Decker merged with V'Ger at the end of the film and was listed as "missing in action".

Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) - In 2285, Spock was promoted to Captain and commanded the Enterprise , which was primarily used as a training vessel. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Admiral Kirk once again assumed command when Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) stole the Genesis Device, which resulted in Spock's death.

Captain Lawrence H. Styles (James B. Sikking) - The arrogant and appropriately named Styles was actually the captain of the experimental USS Excelsior , which chased but failed to catch up to the Enterprise , ending up stolen and used in Kirk's mission to resurrect Spock. In the Star Trek novel "Prime Directive," Styles temporarily assumed command over the Enterprise during its refit after it was severely damaged. Styles has a similar attitude to Kirk, which is why they severely dislike each other (and mainly why their dynamic works).

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Captain James T. Kirk - After stealing the Enterprise to resurrect Spock, and subsequently saving Earth from a space probe seeking to communicate with humpback whales in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Admiral Kirk was demoted to Captain and given command of the new USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A. Kirk's Enterprise-A in Star Trek V : The Final Frontie r and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country met God and helped secure peace with the Klingon Empire before the Enterprise-A was decommissioned.

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B

Captain John Harriman (Alan Ruck) - The Excelsior -class USS Enterprise-B was launched in 2293 under the command of Captain John Harriman. Their shakedown cruise is infamous for encountering the Nexus, which resulted in the presumed death of Captain Kirk, as seen in the prologue of Star Trek Generations.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C

Captain Rachel Garrett (Tricia O'Neill) - The Ambassador -class USS Enterprise-C made only one appearance, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The Enterprise-C was meant to be destroyed at Narendra III while defending a Klingon outpost from a Romulan attack, but it fell through a time vortex that altered the timeline. Captain Garrett died before the Enterprise-C could return to its proper era and set the timeline right.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) - Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Galaxy -class USS Enterprise-D was designated as the flagship of the United Federation of Planets. Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Enterprise-D's numerous missions involved multiple first contacts with new species, diplomatic and military engagements, and scientific pursuits. The Enterprise-D was destroyed on Veridian III in Star Trek Generations but the D was rebuilt and saved the galaxy one last time in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Acting Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) - In TNG 's "The Best of Both Worlds" two-parter, Captain Picard was abducted by the Borg and turned into Locutus. Commander William Riker became the Enterprise-D's Acting Captain and led the successful rescue of Picard and defeat of the Borg, after which Picard resumed his role as Captain of the Enterprise.

Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox) - Perhaps the most despised Captain of the Enterprise, Edward Jellico was assigned to take over the Federation flagship when Picard went on a secret mission and was captured and tortured by the Cardassians in the "Chain of Command" two-parter. After alienating the crew and clashing with Riker, Jellico returned the Enterprise-D back to Picard once he was rescued.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E

Captain Jean-Luc Picard - The Sovereign -class USS Enterprise-E was the most advanced starship in the Federation when it was assigned to Captain Picard prior to Star Trek: First Contact. Continuing as the Federation flagship, the Enterprise-E was the setting of three Star Trek: The Next Generation movies and the crew successfully faced the Borg, the Son'a, and the Remans led by Picard's clone, Shinzon (Tom Hardy).

Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) - Captain Picard was promoted to Admiral and left the USS Enterprise-E to lead the Federation's mission to rescue the Romulans from their sun going supernova. Worf was promoted to Captain of the Enterprise , but the ship was lost under mysterious circumstances. In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Worf insisted what happened to the E was "not my fault."

The 25th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F

Admiral Elizabeth Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) - The Odyssey -class USS Enterprise-F made its lone appearance in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Under the command of Admiral Shelby, the F was intended to lead Starfleet's Frontier Day celebration before the starship was retired. Tragically, the Enterprise-F and the rest of the assembled Starfleet were assimilated by the Borg, and Shelby was apparently killed at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3.

The 25th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) - In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Commodore Geordi La Forge oversaw the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime where he painstakingly restored the USS Enterprise-D in secret. Geordi got to unveil his surprise to Admiral Picard and his fellow Enterprise-D crew mates as they warped off to save the galaxy on Frontier Day. When Picard beamed to the Borg Cube to rescue his son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), Geordi became Acting Captain of the Enterprise-D. La Forge led the Enterprise's assault against the Borg Cube and successfully rescued Picard and friends before ending the threat of the Borg, at last.

The 25th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-G

Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) - The Constitution III-class USS Titan-A was rechristened as the USS Enterprise-G at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3 . The Titan's First Officer, Seven of Nine, was promoted to Captain of the Enterprise, with Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) as her First Officer and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) appointed as Special Counselor to the Captain. Seven also makes history as the first LGBTQI Captain of the Enterprise.

Star Trek Alternate Reality Enterprise Captains

The 22nd century mirror universe - iss enterprise nx-01.

Captain Maximilian Forrest (Vaughn Armstrong) - In the Mirror Universe, the NX-01 ISS Enterprise was commanded by Captain Forrest. In the Star Trek: Enterprise "In a Mirror, Darkly" two-parter, Forrest engaged in a tug-of-war for control of the Enterprise with Commander Jonathan Archer until he was killed by Tholians. However, Archer took command of the USS Defiant, a 23rd-century Constitutio n-class starship from the Prime Universe.

23rd Century United Earth Fleet Timeline - USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) - In an alternate reality created by Romulan interference in Earth's 21st-century history, Captain James T. Kirk commanded the USS Enterprise, a starship in the United Earth Fleet . The UEF was mired in an endless war with the Romulans, which humanity was losing. Kirk and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) traveled back to 21st-century Toronto to reset the course of history back to Star Trek's proper Prime Timeline, but Captain Kirk was tragically shot and killed by a Romulan time traveler named Sera (Adelaide Kane) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow."

The 23rd Century Mirror Universe - ISS Enterprise NCC-1701

Captain Christopher Pike - The ISS Enterprise' s original Captain was assassinated by James T. Kirk prior to the events of the Star Trek: The Original Series season 2 episode, "Mirror, Mirror".

Captain James T. Kirk - After he killed Pike, Captain Kirk maintained his control over the Enterprise thanks to a device called the Tantalus Field, which allowed him to vaporize his enemies remotely. Kirk was briefly switched with his Prime Universe counterpart, who posed as the Mirror Kirk until they were switched back to their proper realities.

Captain Spock - When the Mirror Kirk returned to the ISS Enterprise , Spock relieved him of command, took the Tantalus Field, and also Kirk's mistress Marlena Moreau (Barbara Luna).

"All Good Things..." Timeline - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Admiral William T. Riker - In the future reality seen in TNG 's series finale, "All Good Things..." , the refurbished Enterprise-D (which had a third nacelle allowing the starship to reach Warp 13) was Riker's personal flagship.

26th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-J

Captain Dax - In the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Azati Prime", Captain Archer was brought to a potential 26th-century timeline where the Universe -class U.S.S. Enterprise-J was under the command of Captain Dax, a Trill who hosts the Dax symbiote that once joined with Jadzia (Terry Farrell) and Ezri (Nicole de Boer) from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

J.J. Abrams Star Trek Kelvin Timeline - USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) - In the alternate Kevin timeline created by J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 reboot, Christopher Pike was Captain of the Enterprise, which was the Federation flagship, when Starfleet mobilized to save Vulcan from the time-traveling Romulan named Nero (Eric Bana).

Acting Captain Spock (Zachary Quinto) - After Pike was abducted by Nero, First Officer Spock became Acting Captain, which was challenged by cadet James T. Kirk, who later assumed command of the Enterprise as Acting Captain, leading to Nero's defeat.

Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) - As thanks for saving the Earth from Nero, Kirk was promoted to Captain and given command of the Enterprise. Kirk remained Captain in Star Trek Into Darkness and then launched a five-year mission of exploration.

Kelvin Timeline - U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Captain James T. Kirk - Three years into their five-year mission, the Enterprise was destroyed by Krall (Idris Elba). After Kirk saved the Starbase USS Yorktown from Krall, he was given command of the newly-built Constitution -class USS Enterprise-A at the conclusion of Star Trek Beyond .

25 Things About Star Trek’s Enterprise-D You Probably Didn’t Know [List]

Find out everything you didn’t know about the most famous spaceship in the universe. While the Enterprise for Star Trek: The Original Series is iconic, the reality is that most people grew up watching the Next Generation . It’s the ship that everyone knows and everyone loves, but here are some fast facts about the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D you may not know.

This was originally supposed to be a review of Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection which was sent to us by Eagle Moss Collections and was released in the U.S. last week. It’s a beautiful series and comes with wonderful models that display perfectly. There’s a fascinating article on the concept design of the Enterprise and many other well-written articles. Unfortunately, I discovered the articles have a small number of incorrect facts like saying there were two four-foot physical models of the Enterprise . Even the awesome die-cast model is the wrong color, looking tan instead of gray or blue-gray. While I can recommend it for the casual fan, for nitpickers, it’s lacking. Here are some things I learned from the book and other sources.

1. The U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) is a Galaxy-class ship and the fifth Federation starship in the Star Trek universe to carry the name Enterprise .

2. In the episode “Encounter at Farpoint”, it was the first new Star Trek ship to appear on television in 20 years.

3. While working on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, concept artist Andrew Probert made a personal painting of what he thought the U.S.S. Enterprise would look like in the far future . He was working on the bridge for Star Trek: The Next Generation and put it up for inspiration. Producer David Gerrold borrowed it for a meeting and it was immediately approved for the new Enterprise.

4. In 1990, Probert received a patent on the Enterprise-D design .

5. The warp nacelles for NCC-1701-D were originally designed to be much smaller than the original Enterprise since technology had advanced, but creator Gene Roddenberry felt the ship looked “underpowered” so he said, “Make the engines a little bit longer.”

6. While the original U.S.S. Enterprise was capable of splitting the saucer section from the main body, it wasn’t until the design of the Enterprise-D was nearly complete that the producers told Probert that the ship would split into two parts. He had to redesign the ship to do it.

7. At one point the ship was designed to split into as many as 14 parts.

8. There were three physical models of the NCC-1701-D used on the show: a six-foot model, a two-foot model, and a four-foot model.

9. An original shooting miniature of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D was sold at auction for an expected price of $20,000 to $30,000. It sold for almost $600,000 .

10. Originally, the show was supposed to reuse visual FX footage of the Enterprise-D similar to what was done in the original series. However, the use of video technology instead of film was so fast and cheap that more effects shots were created.

11. The ship was 1521.42′ (463.73 m) long.That’s more than four football fields long and twice the size of Kirk’s ship.

11. The ship in the original series was gray but looked blue because of filming. The new Enterprise had a blue-grey colored pattern but looked gray on TV .

12. The ship was supposed to be so advanced that the engines would never malfunction . But a chief engineer was added because engine malfunctions were useful for the writers.

13. In the opening credits, you can see someone walking past the windows in the Enterprise . It’s Captain Picard .

14. The Escape Pods (or “autonomous survival and recovery vehicles”) on the ship could sustain four occupants for 86 days.

15. In the episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” it’s said the ship was traveling faster than Warp 10 which meant that it occupied literally every point in the universe. Later it was explained that the ship was actually at Warp 9.99999.

16. The Enterprise-D weighs about 400,000 metric tons    which are more than the 700,000  1,500,000 elephants.

Updated: The accepted weight (displacement) of the Enterprise is closer to  4,500,000 metric tons .

16. The ship had only one commanding officer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, with the exception of brief commands by Captain Jellico and Commander Riker.

17. According to the dedication plaque, the ship was dedicated on October 4, 2363, in honor of the anniversary of the launch of man’s first spacecraft named Sputnik. (updated picture)

18. The Captain’s Yacht was named Calypso , after the research vessel of the French explorer Jacques Cousteau . It was on the bottom of the saucer section and never seen in the series.

19. The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D has made an appearance in every two spin-off shows from The Next Generation ( Deep Space 9 and Enterprise ) and several movies. It’s appeared in more episodes of Star Trek than any other ship, including the original series.

20. The ship could hold 1,014 crew members and up to 15,000 in an emergency . That’s the same capacity as Chicago Stadium.

21. It’s the only Federation starship to become sentient and have a baby.

22. The idea of crash-landing the saucer section came from an illustration in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Writers’ Technical Manual . They had planned to have the crash happen in the season six finale episode “Descent,” but it was too expensive.

23. The fish in Captain Picard’s Ready Room was named “Livingston” after producer-director David Livingston .

24. Patrick Stewart repeatedly petitioned to have the fish taken out because he felt fish tanks were inhumane .

25. Producer Rick Burman wanted to avoid making the ship look like the Original Series. He banned the color purple .

That's a lot of elephants. Longer engines – make it so!! Now I'm going to watch for Picard in that window…

Engine malfunctions were useful to the writers because the writers are lazy. I am bummed they never used the captain's yacht, though I think they used the one on the Enterprise-E in Insurrection. I'm still not sure what the point of it was. Couldn't the captain commandeer a shuttle? He is the captain after all.

I guess the idea would be that it's more luxurious than your average shuttlecraft Pat. It would have been very cool for Picard to have been stuck in one with Lwaxana.

I got a fever! And the only prescription! Is more engines! Picard's definitely a blink and you miss it moment Alex. I'm not sure which season they started it in.

I've never gotten over the saucer separation. I remember walking through the front door of my house as a teenager while my parents were watching that first episode just in time for the separation. Let's just say I did not have a positive reaction to it and walked right on through the room.

It had a baby? What?

Wow! I thought that might be Picard in that window – but if I remember, it's a tiny, far-off shot. And I always thought the fish was named after explore and missionary, David Livingstone – didn't know about the director. Cool facts!

It takes strength of mind to captain all this 24th century technology and that honour definitely goes to Captain Jean Luc Picard.

When was the Enterprise-D in Voyager?

I was wondering that myself when I read it but it was in drydock in the Voyager episode "Relativity"

This was fascinating. And I don't recall the Enterprise ever becoming sentient and "giving birth." Had to look that one up, but I guess I missed that one!

It struck me as dumb, corny, and contrived all at once. Basically, "we need a wow moment for this first episode; let's have the ship separate!" I hate things like that. Even when I was a teenager, I hated things like that.

I never thought of it that way.

"Where No ONE Has Gone Before"

Also, there's a whale in there someone.

I doubt that ship was supposed to be the Enterprise, just another Galaxy-class ship under construction. The timelines just don't match up. Even if the registry is the same, it's likely that was just a VFX oversight and nothing more. A nod to The Next Generation, nothing more.

Also, in 14 that's a picture of the escape pods from the Enterprise-E, from the film First Contact. Like the Captain's yacht we never saw the escape pods on the D get used.

And to point 16, Riker got promoted to Captain of the Enterprise after Picard was taken by the Borg in The Best of Both Worlds part 2. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other captains in command at some point too, but I can't think of any.

I don't really see how two points about Picard's fish really fit into an article about the Enterprise-D either, but whatever. 😉

The picture of the escape pods was from the Enterprise E, but I couldn't find a good picture of the Enterprise C escape pods. I've change it to one that's less confusing, but more boring. 🙂

In the episode "Emergence" the Enterprise seemed to overcome various crises without any crew intervention. Data and LaForge investigate and discover strange interconnections in the ships systems forming a "brain" into the holodeck, prompting Picard to declare that the crew begin treating the Enterprise as a sentient being. Data manages to regain control of the Enterprise and aids her in her mission to "give birth" to a new sentient lifeform using vertiron radiation particles. After the lifeform's "emergence" the Enterprise loses it's sentience.

As it happens, I was reading that it was actually a sensor dome like on the original Enterprise. It was only when someone asked Patrick Stewart what it was he joked that it was the "Captain's Yacht" and it stuck ever since, even entering the TNG Technical Manual. It was more comfortable than a shuttlecraft and designed for extended missions not needing the Enterprise. Once DS9 came about and the writers introduced the Danube-class Runabouts, the idea of the Captain's Yacht was largely made redundant… at least until Star Trek: Insurrection but then it was more a case of "I think it's about time we took a look at the Captain's Yacht. We have one, we might as well use it just to show the audience we have one!"

Sorry,… but the Captain's Yacht was Designed as a private or diplomatic shuttle for the Captain or assigned ambassadors. It is similar to a 'Captain's Gig' or 'Admiral's Barge', in today's Navy.

This 'special' shuttle was in place, as such, at the beginning. The sensor domes (top & bottom) were redesigned as a kind of surrounding series of sensors, encircling the bridge (top) and yacht (bottom).

If you're talking about the briefing room windows in the opening credits, I think you'll find that was from the pilot episode. Apparently it was one of Gene Roddenberry's demands that he see's someone walk past the windows. It migrated to Voyager in later years where the shooting model had stills slides of the interior sets in the windows (e.g. the crew mess, Janeway's quarters, ready room, briefing room, senior crew quarters, engineering…)

It could be the Enterprise-D undergoing her pre-Generations refit as the setting for the pre-launched Voyager would have been, to me, between the TNG series finale and Generations. Voyager began with DS9 season 3 which saw first use in the TV series of the new shape Generations comm-badge. I've always assumed that a series run is from the beginning of the year to the end of the year (New Year's Day to New Year's Eve if you like – even though Christmas has never been mentioned in Star Trek). VOY season 1 is just after Voyager's launch but "Relativity" is just prior to her launch. Ergo it is not inconceivable that this could be the Enterprise-D

It was also the 6th, not the 5th, Federation ship to be named Enterprise. You had NX-01, NCC-1701, 1701-A, 1701-B, 1701-C, then this, the NCC-1701-D.

NX-01 served and was retired before the Federation was founded – they worked her hard during her 10 years in service.

The Captain's yacht is seen in Season 6 Episode 25: Timescape. They are traveling in the captain's yacht. Why did you not say anything about the Primary Shuttle bay? which is never shown due to supposed massive size and small budget.

That picture is of Soldier Field (Football) which holds over 60k. Chicago Stadium was a basketball stadium.

You got the mass wrong. The E-D masses either 4.5 million or 5 million metric tons. 4.5 is the commonly accepted number. 5 is given on screen on a data readout. The TNG Tech manual (written by production staff) has it a 4.96 million.

The Enterprise-D is actually 2107 feet or (642.5 meters) long with a mass of 4,960,000 metric tons.

PELICANEATSCAT, the ship in Timescape is NOT the captain's yacht. It is a Danube-class runabout. It is even called "the runabout" in the episode.

Sorry,… but your 'facts': 3, 5, and 11 (the ship is actually 2,108 feet, OL), are wrong. A pretty good average, considering how many 'expert sources' there are out there.

This ship has been painstakingly recreated in die-cast and plastic materials then hand painted with an incredible level of detail. The vehicle also comes with a full color collector magazine. Vehicle measures approximately 5 inches long x 3 inches wide x 2 inches tall (mounted on base).

The  Cousteau  was a  Federation   captain's yacht  that was in service with Starfleet  in the late  24th century , attached to  USS  Enterprise -E .  Cousteau  was a large  auxiliary craft  which normally docked on the  ventral  side of the saucer section , opposite the  bridge , and immediately below the saucer  torpedo launcher . When connected to the  Enterprise , only the bottom side of the yacht was exposed to space; the top of the craft was concealed by the  Enterprise  and the  warp nacelles  were folded against the hull. Upon launch, the  Cousteau  nacelles folded downward and the entire ship dropped away from the  Enterprise .

The fully illustrated magazine includes details of the Cousteau's capabilities, design, and appearance in Star Trek: Insurrection. 

The collection features a full range of Federation and alien vessels including seven incarnations of the Enterprise; all the major Klingon vessels including the Bird-of-Prey; Dominion; Borg; and Romulan ships and is slated to include about 130 ships in total.

The hull shape was actually decided on for an entirely different reason: functionality. The designer wanted to incorporate a “courtyard” and thus needed a trimaran’s signature wide beam. Located on the sundeck, this novel space is fully enclosed to protect you from the elements but has an open roof to let in the sun’s rays. You’ll find a hot tub, a bar, and comfy sofas forward, then a full gym and a day lounge to the aft. The courtyard can be accessed via a central circular elevator that services all decks. 

Starting up top, the bridge deck is dedicated to the crew but is also home to an owner’s office and day lounge. The upper deck comprises the open-plan main lounge, a bar, and a dining room with panoramic views, while the main deck features a beach club, a hot tub, and the rest of the generous living quarters. 

As for accommodation, Enterprise can sleep 12 guests across a full-beam owner’s suite and seven flexible guest cabins. She offers plenty of room for relaxation outdoors, too, with a spacious forward deck that sports a lounge, an alfresco dining space, and a third hot tub. 

Although Enterprise is not quite a full explorer—Glasson calls it an adventure yacht—it does share some of the same qualities. The giant tender garage, for instance, sits aft under the helipad and offers plenty of space for toys. The go-anywhere cruiser is also equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that promises a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

The New Star Trek Movie Will Finally Explore a Missing Part of Enterprise Lore

The upcoming Star Trek movie Section 31 adds a surprising new character: Captain Rachel Garrett of the USS Enterprise-C.

The Enterprise-C has returned! Again!

According to a Variety report about the future of the Star Trek franchise, the upcoming Section 31 movie will feature Kacey Rohl as a “young” Rachel Garrett, presumably before she became the captain of the Enterprise-C. It’s a surprising but exciting turn of events, to be sure, since Garrett has only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek , leaving much of her history yet to be explored. In fact, digging into more of Garrett’s story would be a way to unlock a piece of Star Trek captain lore that’s long been missing despite the Enterprise-C’s introduction over 30 years ago.

Fans first met an older Garrett (Tricia O’Neil) and the Enterprise-C in the season three Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” When that episode aired in February 1990, the arrival of the Enterprise-C addressed a question that had lingered since the show’s premiere three years earlier. Obviously, The Original Series took place on the USS Enterprise, which was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and replaced by the Enterprise-A at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

The TNG premiere “ Encounter at Farpoint ,” which is set almost a century after The Original Series , introduced the Enterprise-D. But what about the Enterprise-B and -C? The answer for the former came in Generations , which begins with the Enterprise-B’s troubled maiden voyage, and would go on to live in non-canonical stories outside of movies and television.

But “Yesterday’s Enterprise” tells a much richer onscreen story about the Enterprise-C. Destroyed 20 years before the episode’s setting, the Enterprise-C goes through a time distortion and arrives in a changed future. In the original timeline, the -C was destroyed while attempting to rescue a Klingon outpost. When the time shift prevents the -C from completing its mission in the past, the future changes and the Federation is suddenly in the midst of a protracted war against the Klingons. In this reality, the Enterprise-D is a battleship, led by an embittered Picard and his military-focused crew, including Denise Crosby’s Tasha Yar.

Directed by David Carson and based on a story by Trent Christopher Ganino & Eric A. Stillwell, “Yesterday’s Enterprise” serves as a proper send-off for Tasha Yar, an original crew member who died an ignoble death at the “hands” of a blob monster in the season one episode “Skin of Evil.” Yar, and the crew of the Enterprise-C, choose to send the time-displaced ship back into the past and complete its deadly mission, sacrificing themselves to prevent the Federation/Klingon war from ever happening.

It’s a glorious episode, one of the best in the series, and a fitting end for Yar. However, Garrett puts in a great showing as a model Starfleet Captain too, embodying the courage and selflessness that marks the best captains. Even though she suffers a surprisingly gnarly death before her ship can go back to the past and complete its mission, Garrett remains a compelling figure from Star Trek lore.

Garrett later got a nod in Star Trek: Picard , which revealed her statue stood on M’talas Prime. But that’s all we currently know about Garrett, unless you count the non-canonical Lost Era novels The Art of the Impossible and Well of Souls , which flesh out her character. In canon, though, Garrett remains a compelling mystery.

As she demonstrated on the series Hannibal , Rohl knows a thing or two about portraying under-explored fan-favorites. On that Bryan Fuller -created adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novels, Rohl played Abigail Hobbes, the daughter of Garret Jacob Hobbs aka the Minnesota Shrike, a serial killer only mentioned in passing in Harris’ books.

Coincidentally, in Section 31 , Rohl’s Rachel Garrett will appear alongside another Fuller creation: Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh . As the original creator of Discovery , Fuller introduced Georgiou as Michael Burnham’s commanding officer, who dies in the Battle of the Binary Stars, only for her Mirror Universe equivalent to arrive and take her place.

The Mirror version of Yeoh’s Georgiou will be the main character of the upcoming Section 31 movie, which focuses on the secret ( and, frankly, overused ) intelligence wing of Starfleet. While she traveled to the 32nd Century with the USS Discovery at the end of that show’s third season, Georgiou’s body began to suffer from traveling across dimensions and timelines. She was forced to return to her previous time, presumably to resume work with Section 31.

Georgiou’s experience moving across timelines and dimensions might explain Garrett’s role in Section 31 . After all, Garrett did also cross timelines and dimensions in “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” and while she died before the effects of the journey could set in, that information would be of interest to Section 31.

However Section 31 plans to handle Garrett, her inclusion will finally shed some more light on the most mysterious of Enterprise eras. Where even the Enterprise-B lived on in non-canonical novels, comics, and video games, the Enterprise-C exists only to die. Perhaps, Section 31 and Rohl’s Rachel Garrett will give fans more to love about this doomed ship, and make sure that history never forgets the name Enterprise.

Star Trek: Section 31 is slated to release in 2025.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 brought back the 32nd century Starfleet's tribute to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) from Star Trek: Enterprise. Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Enterprise are TV series at opposite points bookending Star Trek 's Prime Universe timeline . Enterprise is set in the 22nd century and charts the pioneering voyages of the NX-01, the first Starship Enterprise commanded by Captain Archer. Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3-5 are set over a thousand years later in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 1 began in 2256, a century after Captain Archer's NX-01 Enterprise first set off to explore the galaxy. Although Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery's crew never met Archer, Star Trek: Discovery certainly bore the influence of Star Trek: Enterprise , especially in Discovery 's early seasons. Both series were Star Trek prequels, and Discovery 's original blue Starfleet uniforms were a visual link to the distinctive blue jumpsuits worn on Star Trek: Enterprise by Captain Archer's crew .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere , "Red Directive," saw the return of the Archer Space Dock. Following a mission to Q'Mau where Captain Michael Burnham, Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) were unable to apprehend couriers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis), the USS Discovery and USS Antares used their combined shields to protect a Q'Mau settlement from an avalanche. Afterward, a dusty Discovery jumped back for repairs at the Archer Space Dock near United Federation of Planets headquarters.

The goal of the Archer Space Dock is to upgrade the existing Starfleet and build the next generation of starships.

The Archer Space Dock was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 4's premiere, "Kobayashi Maru." The facility was unveiled by Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) to the first new class of Starfleet Academy. The goal of the Archer Space Dock is to upgrade the existing Starfleet and build the next generation of starships. It was only fitting to name the Archer Space Dock after the Captain of the first Starship Enterprise, and the first Federation President, Jonathan Archer .

The Archer Space Dock is reminiscent of previous facilities that have built and repaired the USS Enterprise throughout Star Trek .

Enterprise’s Archer Is An Important Part Of Star Trek: Discovery Millennium Celebration

The federation began with archer a thousand years ago (give or take a few decades).

Although Captain Jonathan Archer wasn't name-dropped like Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Archer's spirit was evoked in the Federation's Millennium Celebration . Discovery season 5 is set in 3191, a thousand and 30 years after the founding of the United Federation of Planets . Captain Archer was a pivotal figure whose voyages forged the bonds between United Earth, Vulcan, Tellar Prime, and Andoria that led to the formation of the Federation.

Captain Archer was aware of events in the 30th century as a result of his involvement in the Temporal War in Star Trek: Enterprise.

Jonathan Archer is essentially the George Washington of the Federation . After his decade-long run as Captain of the Enterprise, Archer served as the first Federation President. There would be no Federation without Jonathan Archer, and he would be pleased to know that the Federation still endures in the 32nd century. Star Trek: Discovery is forging the future in the 32nd century, but the Archer Space Dock shows the Federation never forgets it was Captain Jonathan Archer who helped it begin.
