  • About the Star

The Star is one of the most prolific keelboats in the world for a reason: it is an incredible boat to sail. Designed in 1911 by Francis Sweisguth, it has proven to be a classic in every sense. It is the oldest Olympic class, having first been used in competition in 1932, and still at the heart of that competition today. Supported by a worldwide association the Star as a class is one of the best organized in sailing, with over 7,500 yachts built over its 80 year history, and 2000-plus actively racing today.

The Star has evolved into the consummate craft for all ranges of competition and performance sailing: its equipment and rig is simple enough for the novice, yet versatile enough for those on the forefront of sailing. It's large, powerful sailplan, combined with a sleek hull and light weight, propel the boat in the faintest of airs, while the flexible spar can be tuned to "de-power" when the breeze kicks up. The large main is infinitely adjustable, allowing the sailor to completely control the driving surface of the sail. Boats today are generally constructed of fiberglass, with positive flotation and an integrated keel. The design, sails, and equipment of the Star are governed by stringent class rules, created to improve competition on the basis of skill and control cost . This has also served to help the longevity of the design, keeping older boats competitive through careful evolution.

Stars are generally "dry-sailed", that is, stored on their trailers when not in use, and with a total weight around 1500 lbs, can easily be towed from place to place.

Many of the world's top sailors past and present have been involved in the Star Class. It's list of former World Champions reads like Who's Who of yachting: other top sailors such as Colin Beashel, John Kostecki, Mats Johansson, Hans Vogt, Benny Anderson, Rod Davis and Mark Reynolds are also involved in the Star class. But the class is made up of a variety of sailors of all ages and skill levels. One race on a Star has hooked some sailors for life: they'll tell you: It's a thrill.

Star: Art and Machine

The Star has practiced a philosophy of design evolution over its 80 year lifetime. Always staying at the forefront of sailing technology, the Star maintains a conservative balance aimed at keeping the level of competition high, holding costs in check and preserving the initial spirit of this great yacht. The priorities of safety and practicality have ruled most of the changes made over the years. This control over development of the class has kept boats that would have been retired at their age in other classes racing well into their golden years. Some of the features that can be found on today's Starboat are:

Adjustable Jib Leads The four-way action of the deck-mounted jib leads allow you to carve the shape of the sail, keeping a good shape to match changing conditions.

Hiking Vest A simple harness allows the crew to get his or her weight out of the boat more efficiently. Made legal by class rules in 1981, the vest must be equipped with a quick-release to ensure safe exit in an emergency. The vest eliminates alot of the exertion and gymnastics traditionally associated with extended periods of hiking.

Suction Bailers Developed by Star sailor Duarte Bello, sailors quickly discovered that several strategically placed bailers can quickly and safely drain any excess water in the cockpit Most Stars generally have 4, two in the center of the cockpit, and two located near the chines.

Circular Boom Vang Also developed by Duarte Bello for Stars, this innovation reached popularity in the 1960's, having proven to be a safe and efficient way to control the high loads of the long boom. This development later spread to other classes, among the 12-meters of America's Cup fame.

Whisker Pole The simple sailplan utilizes a whisker pole to sail wing-on-wing off the wind, thus making the most of the generous sail area.

Class Sail Measurement The ISCYRA measures every sail to ensure fair competition: the rules do not allow the exotic materials that drive up cost and cut the lifetime of other racing sails.

What do the colored Stars represent? Respecting the valued traditions of the Star Class, all Honor Award sailors are requested to display their highest award on their mainsail. Gold for World Champions Silver for Continental Blue for District Green for Novice

Selling J.F.K.’s Boat

By John Clarke

John F. Kennedy sailed Flash II during summers on the Nantucket Sound and while at Harvard. Decades later it was seized...

After going up for auction on Monday, with a starting bid of a hundred thousand dollars,  President John F. Kennedy’s boat  is still for sale. Nobody has yet taken the chance to add their name to a long line of owners, ranging from the young President to, far less reputably, a pot smuggler.

The sailboat is a twenty-two-foot International Star sloop, a class designed by the draftsman Francis Sweisguth in 1910, according to Heritage Auctions, which organized the sale. The relatively tall mast and narrow hull give the boat a massive mainsail, which made it extremely responsive and sensitive to touch but also meant it was tricky to handle and required tremendous skill to race. The Star class has been used for the Olympic keelboat event since 1932, with the exception of the 1976 games. More than eight thousand Stars have been built since 1910. Kennedy’s boat, Star No. 721, was built in 1929 and 1930 by the original owner, H. B. Atkin, of Manhasset Bay, Long Island. Atkin raced it under the name Jubilee from 1930 to 1933.

It was swift and impressive enough to catch the eye of the teen-aged Kennedy and his brother Joseph, who already owned a Star class boat (No. 902), which they called Flash. The Kennedy brothers bought Jubilee in 1934 and renamed her Flash II (records show that they sold the original Flash in 1936). It quickly became John's favorite racing boat and gained a reputation among East Coast sailing clubs as being the fastest in its class. Jock Kiley sailed against Kennedy in the waters of Nantucket Sound, and he insisted that Flash II, not Kennedy’s sailing skills, was to thank for the streak of wins. According to Tazewell Shepard’s “John F. Kennedy: Man of the Sea,” the ribbing proved too much for Kennedy, who in the summer of 1936 finally made a proposition to Kiley: let's swap boats and race. Shepard writes:

Flash II with Jock Kiley at the helm jumped to an early lead. The boat was running true to form, when in the middle of the race both boats were becalmed. As a little breeze began to stir, Jack took a different lark, as he often did. In the trailing position, he was the first to feel the effect of the wind. He hugged the shore line where the breeze was freshest and began to close the distance, managing to pull ahead at the end and—just barely—to win the race. There was no more switching of boats after that.

Kennedy went on to win the Nantucket Sound Star Class Championship that year, and then competed in the 1937 Atlantic Coast Star Class Championships, winning one race by a massive four-minute margin. He raced Flash II at Harvard, as well, and won the prestigious McMillan Cup on the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, in 1938.

Kennedy joined the Navy in 1942 and shipped off to the Pacific, where he sailed on a much bigger vessel, the PT-109. Flash II, meanwhile, passed along a series of owners: Millard Vanderwald, of Casco Bay, Maine, sailed her under the name until 1948, when he sold it to Ken Schwartz, of Larchmont, New York. Schwartz raced her out of Larchmont Yacht Club for two years before selling to Richard Percoco, of Mamaroneck, New York, who bought her with money he earned from delivering newspapers. He sold the boat to Charles Morgan in 1962, who in turn sold it to D. William Ehler, of Clearwater, Florida, in 1963, the year Kennedy was killed, for a reported three hundred dollars. In 1972, the boat was moved to a shed, which is where it remained until Ehler died, in 1996, at which point the vessel went up for auction.

Enter Gregory Olaf Anderson. Anderson had the idea to restore the old boat and, based on its historical pedigree, sell it for at least a million dollars. He assembled a group of investors and purchased the boat for nineteen thousand eight hundred dollars at an auction in Monticello, Florida, in 1996.

With the help of a shipwright at the Marblehead Trading Company, a boatyard in Massachusetts, Anderson stripped off several layers of fibreglass to expose the original wood hull, repaired the old spruce mast and keel, replaced the pine deck, refinished the hull, and spent weeks applying eleven coats of paint. Finally, after the fittings were polished and the teak varnished, the boat was ready. Anderson and his investors sunk approximately seventy thousand dollars into Flash II, according to court documents, and occasionally exhibited the boat at nautical museums and boat shows. "I'd like to see somebody sail her for a summer and then give her to the museum. That would be great,” Anderson  told the Associate Press  in 1997. "I'd love to be the crew."

But Anderson would never get the chance. In December, 2001, he was arrested in Arizona with more than thirteen hundred pounds of marijuana in his truck and was sentenced to eighteen months in state prison. Anderson was in fact transporting the marijuana for one of his investors; after his arrest, he agreed to stay silent in exchange for payment—including the investor’s share of the Kennedy boat. After his release, Anderson was still planning to sell the boat when, in 2004, it was  seized by the Drug Enforcement Agency : Anderson’s investor was coöperating with the authorities, and tipped them off to the likely pot-financed sloop.

The boat was auctioned off by the U.S. Marshals Service in 2005, where it was purchased for a hundred and twenty thousand dollars by its current owner, Frank Harvey, a Houston businessman who volunteered for Kennedy's 1960 Presidential campaign and now collects Kennedy memorabilia. Flash II had been sitting in his backyard under a tarp. After a decade, Harvey was ready to sell Kennedy's boat. He said that he's downsizing.

Harvey told me that Anderson turned down an offer for eight hundred thousand dollars before he was arrested and sent to prison. Anderson, according to court documents, believed that he could sell it for more than a million. "That was the biggest mistake of his life," Harvey said. "I think Olaf got screwed."

But Harvey thinks that Flash II is worth a million dollars, too—a figure largely based on Kennedy nostalgia. He also believes that Anderson's ownership adds to the boat’s story. "It puts a little romance in it," he says. "I can't see it hurting the value."

That romantic patina was not enough to move the boat, however. On Monday, there were no bidders. So, for the next two weeks, Flash II is on the block for a hundred thousand dollars.

It’s an emotional buy, Barbara Beigel-Vosbury, the executive director of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association, said. Prices for a Star in good condition—one not owned by a U.S. President or a drug dealer—can range from five hundred to fifteen thousand dollars. But for Flash II? “The buyer will be a Kennedy aficionado who will pay whatever they think it’s worth,” she said. “It’s like buying Picasso. If you love Picasso, you’ll pay wherever it is they ask.”

Mark Prendergast, a director at Heritage Auctions, said that the boat did succeed in drawing attention to the rest of the Kennedy auction items, which included J.F.K.’s back brace (sold for twenty thousand dollars) and a collection of cameras owned by Jackie Kennedy (sold for $8,125). “It was a tough thing to sell,” Prendergast said about Flash II. “It's very specific buyer base.”

Ben Miller, who restores boats in Texas, readied the boat for its latest auction and took her out for a quick test sail. Other than a leak around the rudder, the boat is in great condition, he says, though by no means for everyday sailing: the rigging is questionable, and he doesn't trust the mast. "It handled just fine," Miller said. "But it's a boat that belongs in a museum."

Kennedy owned a number of boats in his lifetime, and sailing was never far from his mind. On November 21, 1963, he slept at the Rice Hotel in Houston, before flying to Dallas the next day. Sometime that night, he sketched in pencil a simple drawing on hotel stationary. It was a small sloop, sleek on a full keel.

Easily sleeps 5 and is legally registered to have charters for up to six persons. Gusto" Is an incredibly well founded safe and comfortable vessel. She has made trips from Boston to Central America and back several times. She is a full keel vessel that offers a high degree of stability and comfort in any seas The below is my last survey May 30, 2012 Yacht Survey and Condition Report At the request of Mr. Peter M Licnikas the undersigned surveyor conducted a condition and valuation survey of the yacht “GUST-O” a 1978 48 ft Mermaid Ketch sailboat as it lay on jack stands at Yankee Landing Marina Merrimac St, Newburyport, Ma 01951. Name: GUST-O Year: 1978 Builder: Pali Shiang Taipei Hsien, Taiwan Model: Mermaid 42 Ketch Documented: 624951 Hull ID: TAC420251278 Dimensions: LOA 48' LOD 42' Beam 12’2” Draft 6’3” Displacement: 14 net tons Type: Sail Intended Use: Pleasure Hull Graphics and Color: White hull, green bottom Estimated present Value: $71,200.00 Estimated replacement value $245.000.00 Scope of Survey: The purpose of this survey was to estimate the current market value and marine risk evaluation. The survey of this vessel is based solely on careful visual and non-destructive inspection of all accessible portions of its structure and available equipment. Complete inspection can only be made by removal of soles, decking, headliners, ceiling or hull lining, tanks, and joiner work. Complete inspection of machinery, auxiliaries, piping, tanks, systems, electrical wiring, electrical and electronic equipment can only be made by continued operation or by disassembly. This would be damaging in nature and prohibitively time consuming, and therefore was not done. This vessel was surveyed while in lay up at Yankee Landing Marina, Merrimac St. Newburyport, Ma 01951. I visually inspected all sections of the vessel and its equipment detailed in this report. General Description: This hull is a reinforced fiberglass molding hand laid up using alternate layers of mat and woven roven with polyester resin. It is stiffened with web floors, bulkheads and joinery flanges. The hull design incorporates a molded lead filled keel and rudder for ballast. The hull is heavily built and is rigged as a Ketch designed for sail with a 45’ main mast, and 25’ mizzen mast. Bottom: Underwater surfaces were smooth and fair with no signs of damage or recent groundings. The bottom paint was in fair condition. I sounded the entire hull with a phenolic hammer and found no voids, blisters or delamination. I also placed an Electro-physics moisture meter on the hull and found it to be in the acceptable dry range with readings of 15 and less. Through hull fittings were all bronze and appeared original and in good condition, however none were removed for inspection. I observed several through hull fittings that were plugged or partially blocked by barnacles and growth. I recommend the fittings be cored out. The keel is lead filled for ballast rated 9400lbs. The propeller shaft is a 1” in diameter stainless steel supported with a rubber stern bearing with an external housing, all in good condition. I placed a target on the shaft and rotated it. The shaft tracked true within visual tolerances. The rudder is supported at the top with a 1.5” bronze shaft. The shaft and bearings turned smoothly with no signs of wear. Boot top up was white epoxy paint. The paint was in overall good condition with only minor scuffs. I observed one deep scratch on the starboard side that I recommend be repaired to prevent moisture intrusion into the underlying fiberglass. Topsides: Topside teak wood has been removed and replaced with fiberglass with non skid. The topsides were in good condition solid with no signs of moisture or rot. Cabin ventilation is through four Lexan covered 24”X24” teak hatches and four brass 6” air scoops. The life rail was rubber coated stainless steel cable with stainless steel stanchions. All stanchions were well secured and solid. All cleats were stainless and wood in good condition well bedded and solid. The rub rail is teak in good condition. Tanks: The two fuel tanks were rectangle in shape located under the cabin sole. The tanks were aluminum and well secured with proper fill and vents and rated at a total of 88 gallons. Water tanks were rectangle in shape and located under the cockpit sole. The tanks were well secured and fitted with proper vents and fill. The tanks were rated at 110 gallons. Spars & Rigging: Masts and booms are constructed of wood and appeared straight and in good condition. Both masts were rigged with no stretch stainless steel cable and turnbuckles. All rigging was in good condition well secured to the hull and properly tightened. The masts were in need of new paint. Hull Interior: Below decks I removed loose floorboards, opened lockers, and removed drawers for the best inspection of the hull interior and bilge area. I found all bulkheads to be secure with no signs of stress or damage, and the bilges to be in need of a minor cleaning. The interior was finished in custom teak in good condition, and consisted of a V berth forward with full head and shower. To the rear was a salon area consisting of a bench seat on the starboard side and a dinette on the port side. To the rear of the dinette was a galley consisting of a 4 burner natural gas stove with oven, ice box, and double stainless steel sink. The starboard side contained a large chart table with electrical panel. To the rear was a second full head on the starboard side and large master stateroom with queen size bunk. Bilges where sited were generally clean. Bilge pumping was with one super gulper manual pump in the galley. Along with a 12v rule 1500 main pump, and a rule 1000 backup. Steering on board is a pedestal center post with a 3’6” wheel turning a Sea Star hydraulic system rated at 1000 psi. Electrical: The vessels electrical supply is both 120ac powered by a shore power cord only, and 12v. The shore power only powers several outlets. All AC outlets were GFI protected except the outlet near the chart table. I recommend that outlet be changed to a GFI outlet in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12v system not powered up at this time. The 12v wiring was well run, secured, and appropriately sized with a breaker panel and battery selector switch mounted above the chart table in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12 v system was powered with three 800 amp combination starting/house batteries and one 1200 amp and 1000 amp dedicated house batteries. All batteries were in acid proof boxes and well secured located under the aft bunk. Fire Protection: Fire extinguishers consisted of four BC size I. Propulsion Machinery: The yacht power is from a 1978 Perkins 4108 diesel rated at 80 hp. The engine has a 60 amp alternator for charging the starting and house batteries. Engine compartment ventilation was through two 3” intake and exhaust. Engine mounts bolt to steel I beam beds with no apparent signs of movement. Fuel lines are copper hose in good condition. Engine seawater intake is through a bronze ball valve with sea strainer. Engine exhaust is direct to the transom through rubber hose. Fuel filtering is with a Racor filter/water separator in good working order. Lube oil was clean and filled to the proper level. Engine was not running at this time due to winter layup. Engine controls were mounted in the rear cockpit with a single throttle/shift lever with push pull cables. The cables functioned smoothly and were in good working order.
