Notable Spirit Yachts

The 16.7m Spirit 54 is one of luxury yacht builder Spirit Yachts’ most notable designs. This luxury sailing yacht was featured in the film “Casino Royale”, as James Bond’s personal yacht. The Spirit 54 has won trophies in Spirit and Classic regattas and is comfortable with two double cabins and notable detailing. The 12.3m luxury motor yacht Spirit P40 is driven by two 260hp straight six turbo diesels to a top speed of 36 knots and 29 knots cruise speed.

BOND JAMES BOND

Spirit Yachts’ brand partnership with EON Productions, Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM), and Universal Pictures International on the James Bond films began when a Spirit 54 was chosen to feature in the 2006 film Casino Royale .

This year, Spirit Yachts returns to the big screen alongside 007 in the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die .

Casino Royale :

The scene portraying Daniel Craig and Eva Green cruising into Venice onboard a Spirit 54 is now world famous. Having been handcrafted by Spirit Yachts’ skilled team of boat-builders in Suffolk, the yacht (a 54 foot design named Spirit) was shipped to the Bahamas. From there, Spirit Yachts sailed her to Puerto Rico and through the British Virgin Islands for filming. After shooting scenes in the Caribbean, the yacht was shipped to Croatia and sailed on to Venice. During filming in Venice, the yacht’s rig was taken in and out a total of 10 times to fit under multiple canal bridges. She was the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in 300 years.

No Time To Die :

A Spirit 46 features in the James Bond film No Time To Die . Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica, where a Spirit 46 sailing yacht is featured.

Spirit Yachts CEO and Head of Design Sean McMillan commented, “ The James Bond films are a mainstay of British culture and we are honoured to be continuing our partnership with such an iconic brand.”

Motor Yacht

Spirit is a custom motor yacht launched in 2011 by Amels.

AMELS are masters in the art of modern Dutch high-value yacht building. The yard is the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands and one of the top superyacht builders in the world. In 2005 AMELS launched the successful LIMITED EDITIONS and delivered the first yacht of the series in 2007. The shipyard also specialises in the build of full-custom superyachts, with the in-construction Project Signature due to become the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands upon her scheduled launch in 2025.

Spirit measures 54.30 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.50 metres and a beam of 9.00 metres.

Spirit has a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.

Tim Heywood, the multi award-winning yacht designer, has produced some of the finest and largest yachts on the water. Among his exceptional designs is the stunning 133m Al Mirqab, which was awarded the coveted ‘Motor Yacht of the Year’ at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards.

Spirit also features naval architecture by Amels.

Spirit has a top speed of 13.00 knots. She is powered by a twin screw propulsion system.

Spirit has a fuel capacity of 115,000 litres, and a water capacity of 17,000 litres.

company History

the Most known Builder of wooden, or >classic, the boatbuilding industry was founded by designer and sailor Sean McMillan in 1993. It was his second attempt to do business. A year earlier, the Bank withdrew the entire startup McMillan Yachts , and along with housing Sean.

In the room of the old farm in Suffolk Sean and his partner Mick Newman made the first Spirit 37 . She impressed the connoisseurs of elegance and speed.

the Founders of Spirit Yachts were inspired by the classic boat 1930 , with the use of modern technologies of wood processing and forming blocks.

Even with orders, Macmillan and Nyman never left the farm, while their life is not forced. In 2003, Spirit Yachts has started to build 70 ft , which just did not fit in the old hangar. According to another version, the police asked the workers to find another place noise. The new building of the shipyard was the Old Wet Dock in the centre Ipswich .

worldwide fame with Spirit Yachts have received with the release of the 2006 film "Casino Royale "where James bond walked on the Grand canal Venice the elegant Spirit 54 . After filming, the boat was immediately sold, and Spirit Yachts was able to prove that classic never goes out of fashion.

In 2007, Spirit Yachts have built the first fully wooden 100 ft boat Gaia. The yacht was so beautiful and fast that it is now laid her increased 111-foot version.

company Status

the Crisis of 2008 was a test for Spirit Yachts. But the company managed to survive and even to get a British award for achievements in entrepreneurship.

Manufacturing

the Shipyard Spirit Yachts is Ipswich Haven Marina . The area of the yard is 1500 sq m. the production employs about 60 people.

The special thing about what we do at the Berthon Sales Group is that we are trusted with the marketing and sale of so many incredible yachts! Occasionally, we are asked to handle a yacht that tugs on the heartstrings and which is so special in so many respects that she makes the heart sing. Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE is one such yacht.

Essentially a new yacht – she was first commissioned in 2021. Her first overnight voyage was from the East Coast of the UK, to our shipyard on the Solent. All Spirit Yachts look amazing. Spirit 65DH, SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE at 65 feet carries her deck saloon beautifully and her fine ends and elegant transom really work. Her spirit of tradition and good looks belie the modern technology that has been used to ensure that she is truly carbon neutral. Twin electric motors, sustainable Lignia decks and soleboards, and the intelligent use of lithium ion batteries to power her systems, regenerated by her variable pitch sail drives. Her on-board 48v generator is for back up only. Of course, her primary propulsion are her sails and here she is fast, easily sailed and very responsive.

On deck and down below, she has been hand crafted throughout, with a comfortable cockpit and charming deck saloon which is a great place for watch keeping when in open water.

Possibly SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE’s biggest surprise is her main saloon, which is an uncompromising and proper living space with a large natural zinc galley counter and 4 bar stools in stainless steel. The galley also has a Barista coffee machine and grinder in addition to the refrigeration, storage and cooker you would expect. Two easy chairs and a sofa complete the picture all executed in Harris Tweed and Galveston leather from Tetrad. The forward bulkhead holds custom storage for her full set of mythical creatures collection of crockery by Wedgewood.

Forward is a generous en-suite owner’s cabin with a further double berthed cabin and upper and lower berthed cabin with a separate heads aft of the main saloon.

Every detail in the construction and fit out of SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE has been carefully considered in order to make this special yacht not just beautiful and kind to the planet, but practical, easy to handle shorthanded and capable of passage making in security and comfort. She is quite simply, unique.

Owner’s Comments

I have much enjoyed the experience of specifying and building Spirit 65DH SPIRIT OF JOSPEHINE. I have always sailed but our previous yachts have been more production orientated. Therefore, the opportunity to work with Spirt Yachts to produce a yacht that is close to carbon neutral, bespoke and beautiful has been a privilege. She sails beautifully and is easy to handle and to look after. The Awlwood system used to protect the solid mahogany brightwork lasts for up to 10 years. SPIRIT OF JOSEPHINE has a full set of covers for when not in use. For us, knowing that the ongoing maintenance was containable/manageable – was key in our decision to commission the yacht’s build.

Spirit Yachts – Comments

The Spirit 65DH (Deckhouse) was designed by Spirit Yachts to fulfil a couple’s dream of cruising in the UK, Mediterranean and Caribbean. The brief from the owners was to create a beautiful yet practical cruising yacht that leaves minimal impact on the environment. Family life is at the focal point of the Spirit 65DH, with an open plan galley and breakfast bar designed to emulate the owners’ kitchen at home. Personal touches continue throughout the interior making the Spirit 65DH a true ‘home from home’ yacht for her owners and their children.

The 65DH has a Bermudan sloop rig with carbon spars, nitronic rod rigging and 4T FORTE™ recyclable sails from OneSails. The yacht has eco features throughout and includes twin Oceanvolt variable pitch sail drives, which will regenerate 21kW Lithium Valance batteries. A Fischer Panda 48v generator has been installed as a backup if required. On deck, all controls are within easy reach in the cockpit, running rigging is led aft, and Lewmar electric winches have been fitted to facilitate short-handed bluewater cruising. Large lazarette lockers in the stern provide plenty of storage for diving and watersports equipment, as well as an inflatable tender with Torqeedo electric outboard. A deck socket and crane with accompanying winch has been fitted for easy launch and recovery of the tender.

Smooth and sustainable Lignia decking gives way to the raised Sipo Mahogany coachroof, which forms the deckhouse section of the yacht. With panel windows on every side and 360-degree views of the horizon, the deckhouse doubles as an interior navigation station with Raymarine instruments and a guest seating area.

Down below, the natural upholstery colours selected by the owners complement the walnut cabinetry and exposed Sipo Mahogany ringframes. White timber bulkheads and deckheads retain a light and elegant feel throughout the interior.

Upon descending from the deckhouse, passing a starboard-side Pullman cabin, the interior reveals an open plan galley and saloon. Unlike many Spirits, the 65DH has a breakfast bar with high stools incorporated into the galley, which serves as the dining area. The galley is well-equipped for long distance passages and cruising in style with a fridge, freezer, four-hob electric oven, dishwasher, filtered drinking water tap and coffee machine.

Forward of the galley is a lounge-style saloon with an L-shaped sofa to port, which faces two Chesterfield armchairs on the starboard side.

Aft of the galley, on the port side, is a double cabin with accompanying head comprising an electric flushing toilet, basin and rain shower.

Interior Description

“Patience” sleeps six persons in three private cabins, excluding the main salon, with optional sleeping space in workroom.

She has a stunning interior that really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. (See the 3D Virtual Tour) She was designed and then customized around luxury, quality and functional elegance. The interior is truly gorgeous and maintained in show condition at all times.

Starting forward is VIP Stateroom with centerline queen berth.

Next aft to starboard is the Guest Cabin with a double berth.

The Guest Head is to port and features a separate shower stall and a separate door to the Vip Stateroom and another door that opens into the hallway. 

The huge raised Main Salon features large fixed ports, offering a panoramic view outside. To starboard is another  “L” shaped settee and dining table. Next aft is a desk and breakfast bar.To port is a  “L” shaped settee followed by a large Chart Table. Here is located the electronic switches for AC and DC Systems. A large flatscreen TV is located above and navigation instuments are outboard. An eight bottle wine cooler is located below.

Next aft and down two steps is the Galley. The galley on “Patience” will appeal to any cruising gourmet and is equivalent in size to what you'd expect on boats much larger. The galley provides ample counter space, cabinets and drawers for storage. Opposite the galley is the separate laundry room and complete walk-in workshop.

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Length: 50 Feet

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. Every detail is carefully thought out to establish novel and spacious architecture with a homely ambiance.

It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. The Lagoon 50 has an encompassing view, generous volumes with a self-tacking jib, and a shorter mast for easily simplified maneuvers. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Privilege Series 5

Price: Around $1-1.5 Million USD

At 50 feet, this boat is quite marvelous and a privilege to spend your time in as a cruiser or owner. The Privilège Series 5 is the world’s first 50 feet sailing catamaran. This vessel was built by Privilège Marine, a French company based in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. They are famous for building premium luxury catamarans and designed by French Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The Privilège Series 5 is equipped with three or four double and a full-sized owner’s cabin located in the yacht’s center. It’s a lightweight boat at 48500 pounds and could go up to 52900 depending on the size.

It has great customization options, and it can be designed to suit the boat owner’s taste. The attention to detail on the boat is nothing short of perfection as the interior design, woodwork, safety measurements laid out by the boat’s design, aesthetics, ventilation, etc., was thought out good. The vessel’s finishing is really phenomenal as everything has a high level of craftsmanship.

Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

Length: 58 Feet

Price: From $450k To $1.5 Million on the Used Market

Leopard 58 is a superb layout from Leopard, skilfully modeled by award-winning designers Robertson & Caine. This extravagant catamaran is suited to the prolific and innovative catamarans that have made Leopard famous while still giving out fresh features and various design options.

This expansive FlyBridge takes space to a whole new dimension as it is larger than its siblings with their award-winning aspects. A Flybridge is basically a version of catamarans that affords you the luxury of outdoor space, come rain or shine. Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

Price: Around $1 Million USD New ; Not many options on the used market since its a newer model

Popularly called the Seawind 52 because of its 52 feet size. The Seawind 52′ 1600 is designed by world-renowned architects Reichel Pugh. Like the Lagoon 52, it’s a perfect balance for onboard comfort and performance sailing and sea safety. Perfect for sailors or boat lovers who are looking for a little extra.

This catamaran sets a standard for offshore sailing because of its simple sailing methods, large open cockpit space, and twin protected helms. Equipped with a three or four-cabin design that affords the owner’s cabin expansive living space, great storage, high aspect riders, daggerboards, an elegant fit/finish, and infused carbon-reinforced construction.

Seawind 1600

Price: Around $1 Million USD New

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The Reichel Pugh design is a departure from the more conservative looks of the other Seawinds and embraces a very Euro-style with plumb bows, hard chines, a swept-back cabin, and a large open cockpit with helm stations on both sides. The boat is a pure performance cruiser that was conceived as a blue water voyaging boat for a family. At 52 feet, it falls within the size range that an experienced couple can handle, so it would make a great platform for a couple to explore the world. The 1600 like all of the Seawinds and Corsairs, are built in Vietnam.

Nautitech 542

Length: 54 Feet

Price: Around $1.2 Million USD New

Nautitech 542 is the typical example of offshore meeting first class. This boat has ideally tweaked fittings for smooth sailing under any circumstances. Furnished with a single wheel on its roof for perfect views of the boat and a comfy 2-person seat. The idea of this boat is mostly based on performance and quality. Asides from the positions of the helm, Nautitech 541 and 542 are very similar. Nautitech 542 is large and luxurious. The sail controls at the helm stations for easy sailing maneuvers and perfect for all weather conditions. The interior was designed by French designer Franck Darnet. Equipped with state of the art furniture and cabin experience, a sleek experience is assured.

Xquisite X5

Once you have met your first Xquisite X5, you will never forget its absolute distinctive looks and almost space-traveling styling. Price: From $800k to $1.3 Million USD on the Used Market

When it comes to onboard luxury, Marc Lombard, who designed this catamaran, is an expert in that field. This lovely boat is in touch with the latest style, sporting a flybridge complete with two wheels and a broad sunbed suitable for the crew to relax the day away. The 615 is a combination of simplistic and superior design with an outstanding crew, results in the ultimate luxury Caribbean cruising experience. The impeccable elegance of the interior with a lavish owner’s suite and the boat’s perfect wood quality are two great reasons to make you get the boat. The freedom to choose a four or five-double cabin is another, depending on the size of the family.

Followed closely by its outstanding exterior, you’re sure to fall in love with it on sight, from the cockpit to the foredeck. With an impressive platform and lustrous profile, the Privilède 615 contradicts the volume and versatility of its interior. One wonders how they fit into the other, gives it a great ambiance.

Balance 526

Length: 52ft 6in

Price: From $1.3 to $1.6 Million USD New

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

Manufactured in 2014, this luxury catamaran is ideal for those who enjoy watersports and healthy activities. It was designed by world-renowned designer Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prvost (VPLP) and built to top-notch quality with a focus on stability, performance, luxury, and spaciousness. The maximum capacity of this boat is 12 guests in 4-double and 2-twin cabins. The Sunreef 620 is the very first to feature a newly developed rig. From the large cabins, saloon, galley, and sail performance, the 620 is one boat you’d get a memorable experience on. Outremer 5X

The Outremer 5X is unlike any other in the yacht market as it is fast, sturdy, but luxurious all at the same time. Aimed at Blue-water sailors looking to sail fast and far, Switch 51 has proved itself and regarded in this day as a remarkable ocean cruising catamaran. This classic high-performance voyage was designed by VPLP and is said to combine a level of comfort, performance, and safety. It was built by Sud Composites in France with high tech materials. Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

SVSU has one of only two usability research labs in Michigan, with specialized tools and technologies for design testing and rapid prototyping.

Students have access to the PTW Recording Studio equipped with professional-grade audio recording equipment for podcasting and voiceover recordings.

On March 25 th, the US Department of Transportation published the Notice of Funding Opportunity for the FY 2025-2026 Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant (MPDG) opportunity.  This is a consolidated grant offering with three large programs within it.  We were intending to target these opportunities with the next regular TA Window, but the NOFO has been published much earlier than anticipated with a significantly short turnaround time, (applications are due May 6 th at 11:59p.m.). In order to provide timely grant writing technical assistance there is a need to flex our usual process for eligible projects.

The MPDG opportunity contains three grant programs: the National Infrastructure Project Assistance grants program (Mega), the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highways Projects grants program (INFRA), and the Rural Surface Transportation Grant program (Rural). The funding opportunities are awarded on a competitive basis for surface transportation infrastructure projects—including highway and bridge, intercity passenger rail, railway-highway grade crossing or separation, wildlife crossing, public transportation, marine highway, and freight projects, or groups of such projects—with significant national or regional impact, or to improve and expand the surface transportation infrastructure in rural areas.  Please read the entire NOFO at this link: CLICK HERE .

About the Michigan Infrastructure Office Technical Assistance Center

The purpose of the Michigan Infrastructure Office Technical Assistance Center (TAC) is to provide technical assistance, planning, and matching grants to local units of government, planning organizations, and federally recognized Tribal nations to help draw federal infrastructure money to Michigan’s communities.

TAC provides a suite of resources to support Michigan communities in applying for federal grant funding. TAC is continuing to build out the full range of resources. TAC currently offers three key support services: grant identification, grant writing, and match funding. These three services will be available to eligible recipients by an application to TAC. Full guidance for these services is available here . TAC will continue to expand support offerings for additional entities in the future.

Alum: I attended MSU as a minority student with about 40,000 in the total student body. This number was comprised of approximately 30,000 Caucasian students. As a minority coming from an urban background where most residents shared my race this was a culture shock. Programs are available to assist minorities but many were student organized and limited to University and Faculty based. I survived because of the Office of Supportive Services. I wish there was a similar program in the Colleges as well as the University as a whole. OSS provided counseling, employment and funding for minority students. It was very difficult understanding the accents of foreign professors and I wish they had more African-American professors on staff. That change alone would have been great to see as an aspiring scholar. As such, culturally would have been more aware of the dynamics of a classroom where I was the only student of color. Technical skills and personal growth propel student's experience

Now, equipped with a variety of internships, co-curricular activities and leadership roles, the senior aerospace engineering student is excited to continue his involvement on campus while exploring the endless possibilities of a career in aerospace engineering.

“I thought I was just coming here to be a student and to learn in academics, but I unexpectedly learned that coming here was all about personal growth and leadership,” explains Roberts.

One of the organizations Roberts is involved in is the Campus Activities Board (CAB), one the largest student organizations on campus. Soon after becoming a member in 2021, Roberts became the special events coordinator and is now serving as president, where he oversees all events, provides direction to his team, and meets with various staff and faculty to talk about University goals.

“It takes a lot of time, but the friendships and family I have made through it makes it worth it,” says Roberts. “I believe that everyone should be a part of CAB and join our family.”

Because of his role as president for CAB, Roberts is also involved in the Western Student Association (WSA) and serves as a representative on the Student Assessment Fee (SAF) Council. Through both of these organizations, Roberts advocates for University funding accordingly.

“We decide how to best utilize student money received through the SAF and how to best give it back to the students,” explains Roberts. “Through policy change, uplifting student voices, and providing feedback, WSA has accomplished many goals.”

Roberts’ student advocacy doesn’t stop there. He is also in his third year as a Fall Welcome ambassador and completed his first year as ambassador captain, helping new Western students connect with peers, WMU's campus, staff and resources all aimed at helping incoming students achieve success.

“I joined because I wanted to not only learn more about the University coming out of COVID-19 but wanted to meet new people,” says Roberts. “I’ve really enjoyed building those connections, being a mentor and guiding (students) through their University career.”

In addition to the vast opportunities for student involvement on campus, Roberts also appreciates the emphasis WMU puts on diversity and inclusion and sustainability. With a younger brother with Down Syndrome, Roberts advocates for a world where everyone is included through his involvement in programs such as Best Buddies at Western Michigan University and Special Olympics USA. Roberts is also working on pushing a new sustainability initiative titled Sustainable Housing Equipment Shed, hoping to limit waste while providing students with affordable dorm and apartment essentials.

“Through talks with the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Division of Student Affairs, things are looking up for this initiative,” says Roberts. “The goal is to have more funding provided to the Office for Sustainability so that they can fund this initiative and provide leadership through a graduate assistant and add the initiative to the University’s strategic plan.”

Along with his passion for these co-curricular activities, Roberts invests a lot of time and creativity in his studies. One of his favorite memories is from Propulsion I with aerospace and mechanical engineering chair and professor, Dr. William Liou . Roberts and his group members decided to focus their final project on the propulsive force that engineers could put into a wrench to throw it long distances titled “Project Wrench Rage: Propelling Anger into Motion.”

“My group and I decided to take the project in a less conventional way. While most other groups did research-based projects, ours was experimental,” explains Roberts. “We made a lot of mistakes throughout it, but ultimately learned about what all things need to be considered, prepared for, and thought of whenever you run an experiment.

A part of Roberts’ journey in discovering what career to pursue was joining Western Aerospace Launch Initiate (WALI), one of 20 registered student organizations offered at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Roberts joined the guidance, navigation and control (GNC) team within WALI where he learned about the details and challenges behind determining the location and orientation of a satellite. Roberts dedicates his experience in WALI to helping him land his first engineering internship at aerospace company Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut.

“I was able to get hands on experience with some of the GNC parts and run a test with the military grade GPS system,” explains Roberts. “My experience and time in WALI really helped me to secure that internship with Pratt and Whitney, as I had hands on experience outside of the classroom.”

At Pratt and Whitney, Roberts was a quality engineering intern where they track and predict non-conformance parts or processes and aim to make the engines safer and more reliable. Roberts was a part of the manufacturing process and explored a different kind of working environment. Through his internship at Pratt and Whitney, Roberts discovered a lot about quality engineering and even more about himself.

“I learned about manufacturing and product quality. I learned about the company as a whole. But most importantly to me, I learned the importance of self-reflection ," says Roberts.

Embracing this personal growth, Roberts is excited about the future of aerospace engineering and the opportunities and challenges that come along with it. Specifically, he wants to explore the development of next generation fighter jets and advanced propulsion systems.

“I’m very interested in next generation turbine jet engines, and I look forward to pursuing a career where I can be a part of those programs,” says Roberts. “Each design and program are going to come with its own challenges, and that’s something I want to take on and learn from.”

About the 2024 Tobin Siebers Prize

Submissions are now open for the 2024 Tobin Siebers Prize for Disability Studies in the Humanities. The prize is awarded in memory of disability studies pioneer Tobin Siebers, Professor of English at the University of Michigan and author of many influential books and articles in the field of Disability Studies. The prize is awarded yearly for the best proposed book-length manuscript on a topic of pressing urgency in the field (with the exception of 2020, due to the challenges presented by COVID-19). Reflecting on the work of the scholar the prize commemorates, the competition invites submissions on a wide range of topics, from literary and cultural studies, to trans-historical research, to contributions to disability theory such as work in crip/queer studies. The deadline is August 1, 2024; the winner will be announced in January 2025. Winners receive a cash prize of $1000, and a book contract from the University of Michigan Press to be published in the Corporealities: Discourses of Disability series.

Guidelines for Submissions

Eligible submissions include a book proposal and two sample chapters not under consideration by another publisher. Unrevised dissertations, fiction, poetry, and memoirs will not be considered. Manuscripts and supporting documents should be in digital format and must be sent via email to [email protected] and Associate Editor Haley Winkle [email protected] , no later than August 1, 2024.

In addition to the proposal and sample chapters, please send the following materials:

• A brief statement regarding its relative contribution to the field of Disability Studies

About Tobin Siebers

The work of the late University of Michigan faculty member, Tobin Siebers, has influenced Disability Studies in field-shifting ways since the publication of his prize-winning essay “My Withered Limb” in 1998. His subsequent scholarly publications, including the books Disability Theory (2008) and Disability Aesthetics (2010) as well as essays such as “A Sexual Culture for Disabled People” (2012), quickly became pivotal works in the field. Siebers’s work has galvanized new scholarship in relation to questions of representation, subjectivity, and the entry of non-normative bodies into public space, and made the study of disability a central component (alongside gender, race, sexuality, and class) in analyses of the culture wars and identity studies.

To honor this remarkable legacy, the University of Michigan Press and the University of Michigan Department of English Language and Literature established The Tobin Siebers Prize for Disability Studies in the Humanities. Reflecting the scholar’s work the prize commemorates, the competition invites submissions on a wide range of topics, from literary and cultural studies, to trans-historical research, to contributions to disability theory such as work in crip/queer studies.
