Holterman Shipyard Lady Fleur wins two top superyacht awards

We know we’ve created something special with the X-treme 105 Lady Fleur but entering her for one of the top superyacht prizes was a new step for our yard. Could we possibly win one of the esteemed BOAT Design & Innovation Awards in Italy on 8 February? The answer was ‘yes we could’… And ‘yes we could’ again, as Lady Fleur became the only superyacht to win not one but two of the famous Neptune trophies!

The winners of the 2023 BOAT Design & Innovation Awards were crowned on the opening night of the Superyacht Design Festival at a glittering ceremony in Cortina. It’s a little like the Oscars of the yachting world as the awards are chosen by professionals from across the industry. As judging panel co-chair and renowned editor Marilyn Mower said: “It’s a privilege to delve into the details and decisions that go into developing yachts that will no doubt set trends and expectations for yachts that follow.”

You can imagine how thrilled we were then when Lady Fleur won both the Outstanding Exterior Design category for yachts between 24m to 39.9m and Innovation of the Year for her tender platform/swimming pool. “This is a huge achievement not only for our team at the shipyard but also for the owner, the designer Bernd Weel and the architects at Diana who together created this stunning yacht,” says Holterman Yachts’ general director Herman Timmerman. “Lady Fleur is a textbook example of how a small team can create a great yacht!”

What did the experts have to say about Lady Fleur? “With many finalists re-imagining onboard spaces, the X-treme 105 was praised for the way the yacht fulfilled a complex owner’s brief – fitting a massive tender and family pool onto a single deck while maintaining an attractive yacht profile.”

The originality of Lady Fleur’s design clearly struck a chord with the judging panel of specialists from the global design and naval architecture community. As you can read in the reports below, they describe her as a “remarkable design achievement”, with the stern area being “a solution so novel it has to be seen to be believed.”

Outstanding Exterior Design category for yachts between 24m to 39.9m

“Lady Fleur was tapped for the top award because of the innovative, contemporary way her design team met a very complex owner’s brief. The goal was to carry a large tender that can be stored in a drive-in bay and offer a swimming pool within a yacht less than 35 metres long. In addition, there were to be five guest cabins and a crew apartment, while keeping volume below 200GT. The designer responded with a robust, well-proportioned, forward-leaning profile and paired it with unique flowing window shapes that tap into a highly functional interior arrangement. Interesting structure lines and chamfers develop 3D-like shadows that change with the angle of light. The fact that Lady Fleur carries such a large owner’s tender without looking like a cargo carrier and maintains quality outdoor living areas including practical water access is a remarkable design achievement.”

The first thing to realise is that this unique element – a truly multifunctional space – is on a 33-metre boat. Experienced owners challenged the design and build team with a simultaneous request for a drive-in tender bay for a large RIB and a swimming pool for their grandchildren. The solution is so novel it has to be seen to be believed. In fact, demonstrations created traffic jams at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

“In essence, creative engineering allows this monohull to temporarily become a catamaran, at least for the aft third of the yacht. By splitting the engine room into two watertight sections à la power cats, and building a watertight compartment between them, the aft centre section of the hull lowers to allow the tender to float out or in. With the tender launched, the bay, now containing seawater, rises to become a safe and secure 11-metre swimming pool flush with the aft main deck.”

X-Treme 105 // Lady Fleur // Holterman Shipyard

The x-treme x-105 by holterman shipyard, christened lady fleur, features the new stabilizer system waveless by cmc marine - moreover, the argo and directa 120 systems..

The fresh and masculine exterior comes from Bernd Weel Design, while Diana Yacht Design did the calculations, and Trimm Design drew the interior design. Alongside the eye-catching exterior design, another great feature is the tender launching system aft that welcomes an 11m RIB on a 32m yacht. Moreover, there is an integrated 5m pool. Another place for water toys, jet skis, and a 3.45m boat is amidships. The tender launching system is also a pool.

With its twin Volvo D16MH engines (551 kW each), the X-105 can reach a top speed of 15 knots and has a range of 2,400 nautical miles at its cruising speed of 10 knots.

“The owners have lots of experience with fast boats and wanted to switch to an extremely comfortable and relaxed yacht that would be ideal for three generations of their family,” Holterman explains. “Their philosophy revolved around three key issues: enhanced safety (hence the high bulwarks), hassle-free enjoyment of time spent onboard (hence the emphasis on redundancy throughout) and a radical design that would make the most of the spaces they actually use. The latter demand and its implications for the aft section of the boat led us on a journey that has basically ripped up the rule book for boats this size.”

Monohull or Catamaran?

“The fore and amidships section of Lady Fleur is a conventional monohull yacht with accommodations, lounge, and crew cabins, ending aft with a full-beam garage for the two jet-skis and other toys that are launched by side hatches. The aft section is built in a catamaran style with two mini-hulls welded to the aft bulkhead for the engines plus two other technical compartments, one containing two watermakers and air conditioning units, the other housing almost all the electrical equipment.

The two engine rooms are separated by a construction that lowers down and can be submerged 2.5 meters to create a draught of one meter below water. This allows the tender to be easily wet-launched or retrieved, with complete comfort for those alighting or disembarking. Within that platform we have created a movable floor which picks up seawater to create a five-metre long pool that ranges from 30 to 150 cm in depth. This is a totally custom-developed system by a team of experts from across the design and engineering spectrum.”

The X-105 has four electric fin stabilizers by Waveless that belongs to CMC Marine. The company engineered this system for yachts from 12 to 40 meters. Furthermore, they also deliver the electric steering system Directa 120 and the control system ARGO.

Four guest cabins are placed on the lower deck, together with the crew area. The owner suite is on the main deck.

The very first hull of the  Holterman X-Treme 105 expedition yacht LADY FLEUR , has been photographed on sea trials ahead of delivery.

Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, luxury yacht FLEUR features naval architecture from Diana Yacht Design , exterior styling by Bernd Weel Design and interiors from Trimm Design. A slate grey hardtop and matching windows join into a cream-coloured superstructure and champagne hull.

The most unique feature of this 32.65m/107ft pocket explorer is the spacious and versatile main deck aft: The deck lifts up so that the tender can be driven onboard into a flooded tender garage, for the tender garage can be flooded and used as a saltwater swimming pool. Alternatively, the swimming pool can be covered to lie flush with the rest of the main deck so that the entire area can be used for sunbathing and socialising.

A Jacuzzi and sunbeds line the sundeck aft, and the hardtop shelters a wet bar and alfresco dining area. An additional sunbathing area can be found on the bow.

The interior provides a large open-plan living area on the main deck, where the galley and wet bar occupy the starboard side of the room with the formal dining area forward, and the cosy salon to port.

The overnight accommodation sleeps a total of 10 guests over 5 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite on the main deck forward and 4 further guest cabins on the lower deck. There are also 2 crew cabins to sleep a crew of 4.

A pair of Volvo Penta engines produce a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 10 knots, at which she has a range of 2,400 nautical miles. A draft of just 1.85m/6ft allows M/Y FLEUR access to tranquil bays and coves that larger, heavier explorer yachts cannot reach.

A paradigm shift in yachting: Diana Yacht Design and the 33m superyacht Lady Fleur

Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. When Holterman Shipyard delivered its 32.65-metre superyacht X-treme 105, Lady Fleur, it was quite literally the ‘talk of the town’, and when she debuted at Cannes Yachting Festival the quay was awash with amazement.

Lady Fleur is radically practical and it’s easy to pass her off as a traditional monohull with a large aft deck for tender storage; but behind her taut muscular design is an unusual and complex piece of engineering: a novel aft deck that can be hydraulically lowered below the waterline to safely launch and retrieve a large tender.

The seed of inspiration was sown by her owners, who wanted a multipurpose aft deck: tender storage, a deep but safe swimming pool for their grandchildren, and somewhere to host intimate dinner parties. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. Bernd Weel Design was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than Diana Yacht Design?

“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect & Designer at Diana Yacht Design , told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for DIANA but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests.

Lady Fleur features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.

“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on Lady Fleur which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.”

Diana Yacht Design conducted rigorous FEM analysis of the total hull construction very early on in the process, and in direct conversation with classification society and flag state. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.

“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.”

Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?

“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. To have a proper water flow towards the propellers steering nozzles were added.”

The FEM calculation was an integral part of the aft section of Lady Fleur, but for the forward section was treated as normal. This helps reduce lead time as it “made it possible to start building the forward section already while a lot more engineering time was created to be spent on the difficult aft ship section.”

But the aft deck is just one part of the story. Lady Fleur also has a large enclosed tender garage, accommodation for 10 guests, and a dedicated crew apartment – all within a 200 GT package.

Lady Fleur truly defies the impossible, and when pressed if DIANA is looking at other ways to revolutionise yacht design, Marelis said: “We are up to the challenge for sure, we try to implement new ideas in our own concepts like Kaizen and Blue Angel for instance. But if an owner or shipyard has some wild idea like with Lady Fleur, we are open to investigate and hopefully realise it.”

The coolest superyacht pools in the world

Superyacht swimming pools are a luxury in more ways than one, proving a technological challenge that, when pulled off, elevate a superyacht to even higher standards of splendour. BOAT takes a closer look at the yachts that have risen to the occasion, with designs that feature cinema screens, chandeliers and basketball courts...

The 49.9-metre Grey retains the same classic Paszkowski profile as sisterships Kinda and Olokun , but with several all-important differences – including the addition of the swimming pool. Commissioned in 2021, this Tankoa Yachts build has been customised by her owner to feature a larger-than-usual, glass-sided swimming pool on the foredeck, complete with a high-definition, high-luminosity cinema screen. Flanked by sofa seating, the screen also includes integrated speakers and a surround-sound system courtesy of British-French brand Focal and Naim. 

The 80-metre Tatiana is the sister of Bilgin's bright-red Leona and both yachts have the same striking, bullet-style exterior. At her epicentre is a 110-square-metre, two-level beach club, connected to the main saloon by a dramatic, sweeping staircase. While there’s a pool on both decks, the largest is found on the lower deck. Clocking in at an impressive 8.5 metres long and three metres wide, the pool is surrounded by delicate glass columns, Carrara marble and a backlit, blue agate floor. When the yacht is anchored, the aft door and two side terraces unfold, creating a seamless connection to the ocean. The water from both pools is also recyclable, able to be stored in a heating holding tank.

Lady Jorgia

Lady Jorgia (formerly known as Ahpo ) is a 115-metre, Caribbean-inspired family superyacht. While a lot of her defining features are plainly visible, some sights are reserved only for guests, such as the mosaic-lined, eight-metre long, glass-fronted pool. This pool features integrated LED lighting and privacy walls – not including the aft wall, which was left transparent for ocean views. Below deck and even more exclusive is Lady Jorgia 's complementary spa plunge pool, prettified with a teak-and-teal wave mosaic design, bamboo panes and a leaf-shaped skylight. Both are warmed by the engines and generators’ normal operation, in an efficient heat-recovery system.

The 67-metre Seasense 's exceptionally large pool is actually what got the yacht sold – Cor D. Rover's pool-centric drawing stood out to future owner (and previous owner of three Rivas ) Charles Cohen. At ten metres long, 3.6 metres wide and able to support a staggering 27,000 litres of water, Cohen wanted sunlight to reach every millimetre of his magnum opus . That's why Seasense 's aft deck is so elongated, with the swimming pool actually being part of the hull rather than inserted afterwards (a more typical construction). To give you a better idea of its size, the crew can transform the emptied pool into a basketball court using 22 panels stored in lower deck lockers. A basketball hoop affixes to the deck overhang at the forward end of the pool.

The radical pool designed for 32.6-metre Lady Fleur doubles as storage for an 11-metre RIB tender, with the hydraulic submersible platform transforming into a five-metre-by-two-metre saltwater pool in seconds. Four bespoke rotor arms move the pool in a gentle swaying motion to avoid spilling water when underway, which builder X-Treme Yachts explained is part of a "totally custom-made system" that is "unique in the world". Designed for the owner's grandchildren, the pool contains nearly 19 tonnes of seawater when full and has an adjustable depth, from 0.3 to 1.5 metres.

Inspired by her owner's favourite shade "Monaco Red", the 64-metre Atomic definitely stands out from sisterships Sealion and Roma . This yacht's beating (red) heart is her brilliantly iridescent spa pool, found on the sundeck aft. With a tiered structure and glass bottom, sunlight refracts on the water's surface and sends colourful, coral waves to the dining area directly below. Adjacent to the pool is a split-level lounge space with a gas firepit and a U-shaped bar, surrounded by high-backed custom seating.

A World Superyacht Award winner in the Displacement Motor Yachts category, one of Somnium 's stand-outs is her chic, built-in, 9,000 litre pool. Overlooking the yacht's transom, ample ocean views encourage relaxation, while a counter-current jet provides a light work-out for the more active members on board. The pool floor can be raised flush with the deck and modular furniture placed on top to provide supplementary lounge space. During construction, Feadship had to find space below the pool and its machinery for a beach club and gym, as per the owner's request. The pool tank and its mosaic walls are thus visible from the beach club through a large picture window.

Christina O

The 99.1-metre Christina O 's recent role in Netflix drama The Crown isn't her first brush with the celebrity lifestyle. Delivered in 1943, she was rebuilt by the famous Aristotle Onassis, a Greek shipping magnate and one of the world's richest men at the time. Under his ownership, Christina O entertained cultural icons Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill and JFK – and has an equally iconic pool to match her history. Found on the aft main deck, this saltwater fantail number is emblazoned with a Greek mythological minotaur mosaic. It is also capable of rising to form a dance floor at the push of a button. 

Built for the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the 126.2-metre Lürssen superyacht Octopus is indulgently decked-out with every conceivable amenity. Alongside her two helicopters and submarine, the heated, seven-metre freshwater swimming pool is considered Octopus ' greatest asset. The pool has a glass bottom that rises to create an on-water dance floor. In the immediate area, you'll find a bar, pizza oven and former music studio, whose isolation booth makes the perfect place for a DJ.

This Benetti build boasts an expansive wellness area, the jewel of which is a 30-square-metre, counter-flow swimming pool, kitted out with underwater speakers and an adjustable bottom. Luminosity's pool is clad in mirror-polished stainless steel, reflecting its surroundings and blurring the boundary between pool and seascape. The space above is punctuated with a custom chandelier inspired by a diamond. "When you look at the water and the sun is shining, it looks like millions of diamonds," said designer Zaniz. An accompanying four-degree plunge pool is decorated with on-theme visual cues, such as mirror-backed acrylic "ice-cubes" and an acrylic ice cube accessory, seen above. 

M'brace

The swimming pool on 74.5-metre M'brace (ex. Elandess ) has a futuristic look befitting her technological design. Eight metres by 2.5 metres and able to hold 22 tonnes of fresh water, hidden beams below the pool distribute its substantial weight to the outer edges of the superstructure and down to the hull. Thanks to two 280-millimetre diameter pipes, the pool can also be emptied in only three minutes. The sundeck swimming pool skylight allows natural light to filter to a circular staircase below deck, glinting off mother-of-flecks in a plaster surrounded by DKT Artworks.

Designed with economy and efficiency in mind, the 75-metre Kenshō has an aft deck that does it all: social seating, dining, a party space and (of course) a pool area, located on the lower deck for "mesmerising views at the same level as the ocean”. A complementary spa pool features a cut-away glass side and a large sunbed, with a shape styled after a manta ray. Inspired by the natural forces of Arizona's Antelope Canyon, the aft walls and the stairs on the pool deck look as if they were carved by the sea.

Built by Oceanco , this 90-metre, shark-inspired superyacht features two spectacular swimming pools. Pictured above is DAR's 1.6-metre-deep bridge deck pool, surrounded by bright-white sun pads and fed by a cascade of waterfalls that begin on the upper deck. It has been raised to make it safer for small children. Hidden on the owner's deck, however, is a completely private spa pool, flanked by one-way windows that reveal the world to the owners, but not the owners to the world.
