There is something to move... a maxi yacht: it goes through the street, it is higher than the houses

lanazione.it

Viareggio, 23 May 2023 — A scene that is now usual but that never ceases to surprise: Via Coppino, in the Viareggio dock, is often crossed by more or less large yachts during transport operations. And the watchful eye of the Nostromo trattoria is never lacking, which resumes the scene from its dehors, as seen in this video. A maxi yacht, a 38-meter Sanlorenzo, is moved with millimeter precision as it passes through a road that usually allows a c…

Rossinavi shipyard

How This Unassuming Tuscan Town Became the Epicenter of the Superyacht World

Turns out, the best superyachts are made in italy—more specifically, in viareggio., by mark ellwood.

Make me the biggest yacht in the world—bigger than anyone has ever seen,” he commanded. It was a mold-breaking commission for the Benetti shipyard more than 40 years ago, from a client keen to tout his wealth. The Italian firm had already earned accolades for making fine yachts , but this was to be a new kind of vessel, a “ superyacht ,” if you will.

Benetti’s designers embraced the brief with gusto, and the resulting craft, though perhaps not the biggest yacht ever, was the epitome of oceangoing glamour: At 282 feet, it had five decks equipped with 11 cabins, a cinema and exhaust funnels sloped outward to allow helicopters to land on the helipad more easily. There was even a disco—it was 1979, after all.

The estimates for the cost went as high as $100 million, a vast sum for the shipyard. More importantly, as the go-go ’80s dawned, it launched a wholly new category of aspirational goods: A simple yacht no longer sated the yen for cruising—only a superyacht would do. And the leading place to commission one was the home base of Benetti and its fellow generations-old Tuscan boatbuilders, a small seaside town called Viareggio .

In the decades since that ship’s momentous launch, Viareggio has become the world’s hub for building superyachts . There’s no formal standard for the class, but one rule of thumb defines it as any vessel larger than 98 feet. Of the 750 such ships built since 2016, 44 percent were made in Italy , according to the trade publication SuperYacht Times , and the vast majority of those in this town of just 62,000 people. The phenomenon’s progenitor—now named Azimut Benetti —is the world’s most active superyacht producer. At the start of 2021, it had 2.2 miles under construction. Not far behind, at 1.9 miles, was its Viareggio neighbor Sanlorenzo . Indeed, dozens of famed firms sit jigsawed together here around a street that’s barely half a mile long: Mangusta , Rossinavi , Codecasa and more. Via Michele Coppino, next to the Darsena , or harbor, is often called the yachtsman’s answer to Rodeo Drive. The comparison seems a stretch, at first sight: The nondescript strip, rimmed by higgledy-piggledy façades, doesn’t exactly ooze panache.

Perhaps that’s the point, as Monaco-based charter broker Paola Scalabrino suggests. “They’re all next to each other, and you don’t know where one finishes and the other one begins,” she says. “It’s one of the most important hubs for yachting, but it’s in a very subtle way. You have to read between the lines.” Indeed, step into a café nearby and grab an espresso—walk, don’t drive, as parking is horrendous—and what powers life in this town becomes clearer. Rowdy or hushed conversations might involve brokers haggling over a deal, or rival boatyards settling scores. “So many workshops, so many sheds, so many boats,” says another insider. “The whole town breathes yachting.”

Viareggio wasn’t always such a moneyed, jet-set nexus. When I visited throughout my childhood, I had no idea that the wealthiest yachting enthusiasts in the world were pouring cash into the rickety boatyards I’d see en route to the town’s park, more a pine forest, really. My focus was on the beachfront promenade, filled with shops, restaurants and gelaterie. Most of the major buildings are Belle Époque, a nod to the era when the town transformed from fishing village to tourist destination. Viareggio is part of a 12-mile strip known as Versilia , where the beaches are wide and golden, a blank canvas for sandcastles constructed by the Milanese kids who spend the summer months here; a typical family books a suite at a hotel for several weeks, like a serviced summer home. The buildings hint at Cannes, but Viareggio is shot through with a brassy elegance that’s so distinctly Italian.

This corner of Tuscany also has an arty past: The quarries in nearby Carrara, for example, supplied the enormous block of marble that Michelangelo turned into David. That’s why the area became a fixture of my childhood, too: My artist father was drawn here in the 1960s by its history, and my family would make the journey from our home in Britain regularly over the next 30 years, staying somewhere along the coast, in Viareggio or elsewhere in Versilia, embracing the rhythm of life. Yet, despite countless visits, we never once considered going out on a boat. If we had, I might have met Giovanna Vitelli .

The Benetti Hellpad

Vitelli is now executive vice president of Azimut Benetti, her family’s shipyard and by far the largest and most important builder. Back when it was just Benetti, construction of the original superyacht bankrupted the firm, and the Vitelli-owned Azimut swept in and snapped up the floundering rival. Vitelli’s earliest memory is from aboard a boat in the Darsena. “I was sitting on the flybridge, watching the captain,” she recalls. “He was sailing from our internal shipyard, down the canal, to the open sea, and it’s pretty tight—just a couple of centimeters [clearance] each side. He made it look easy, joking with me and barely looking down. It was so thrilling.”

Like many of the yards here, hers has roots back to the late 19th century, as the town’s shipbuilding prowess long pre-dates the superyacht boom. The need to export marble from Carrara affordably led to the first commercial dock here, in 1819. For more than a century, the focus was on large, strong wooden ships for commercial use—cargo and fishing, mostly. But that industry helped establish an impressive pool of talented, local shipwrights, who were primed to take advantage when yachting became a staple of jet-set living in the dolce vita era. As demand grew, those yards cannily pivoted to start building fiberglass and metal craft aimed more at idling on the ocean than speedily dispatching local stones to London or New York. Viareggio’s boats quickly earned a reputation for panache, full of a certain swagger that the more formal yards of Northern Europe could never quite match, though perhaps not as reliably engineered as their German and Dutch rivals.

Benetti Shipyard

“It was a revolution for Viareggio,” say Vitelli. “Just after the war, in the 1950s, there was a need to come back to life and enjoy life.” No wonder, then, that she says she’s especially proud of the forthcoming 121-foot Motopanfilo superyacht . Zippy and compact, it’s on the smaller side for a superyacht, deliberately intended to nod to those first glory days of yacht-building here in several ways—think rounded sterns and curved teakwood fixtures. Vitelli says the new model was inspired by the Mini Cooper, another classic design that’s been tweaked and reinvented while remaining aesthetically consistent for decades. “It’s the quintessence, a way of showing the world our continuity with the past, but gloriously reinterpreted in a modern way. That’s something we could only do in Viareggio, because we need the skilled artisans here, who know how to brush that teak and curve the wood. They have been doing that here for a long, long time.”

Vitelli emphasizes she’s keen for more owners to visit her in situ and see their vessels under construction rather than simply deeding responsibility for project management to their brokers. The appeal of making the trip is obvious: not only the hospitality of shipyard owners like Vitelli but also the innate charm of the area. Plus, Florence is just a short helicopter ride away.

Scalabrino encourages her clients to come and has found more are now keen to see the work in progress. “It’s like children building with Lego, seeing behind the scenes before the puzzle comes together—the engine rooms, the roughness of the process,” she says. “Clients might come back every so many weeks to follow the progression of construction at every stage.” Make sure to earmark at least one visit during Viareggio’s annual Carnival , which usually takes place in February. It’s a snarky mashup of Saturday Night Live and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, notorious throughout Italy for its merciless satire. In bygone years, shipwrights built the floats in their spare time, redeploying their maritime expertise, and even now that papier-mâché has supplanted wood and metal as the material of choice, some shipyard workers get involved.

Visiting a yard in person, of course, also allows buyers to offer direct input. Italian shipyards are generally known for their flexibility, especially mid-build, willing and able to adjust plans to satisfy a client’s change of mind. Shipyards in Northern Europe, while also amenable to tweaks, have a reputation for being likely to push back against such course corrections.

It’s easier not to be rigid when firms are largely private and family-run, as is Codecasa . Ennio Buonomo is a senior executive; his father-in-law is its longtime head. “If you call here, someone from the family replies on the phone, and we know that people from the United States, in particular, like that,” Buonomo says. “They feel more comfortable talking with the owner, so they can explain what they’re looking for and have a response within a day.” Like Vitelli, he welcomes visits from people in the market for a new yacht: “We sell more boats at a restaurant or the golf club than we do at a boat show.” Giorgio Armani’s Main, a 213-foot superyacht, was built here—it stands out at any marina with its dark-green hull, a personal specification from the designer—as was media mogul Jim Gabbert’s 164-foot Invader. U2’s the Edge shares ownership of another Codecasa vessel, the 160-foot Cyan.

It’s the town’s reputation for design flair that draws sophisticated buyers of their ilk. Each yard has a distinctive aesthetic reputation, too: Erstwhile retail tycoon Sir Philip Green’s 295-foot Lionheart is a sleek, modern design from Benetti, but he also owns the 108-foot Lionchase, used as a tender for the mother ship. The smaller boat reaches a speedy 37 knots, typical of the yard that built it: Mangusta , shorthand among insiders for sporty, futuristic craft. Mangusta is a relative upstart, founded during the early days of the superyacht boom in the 1980s.

Rossinavi builds no more than four vessels each year, but its devotees are willing to be patient, usually waiting two to four years for a finished craft. The firm is known for creative problem solving, as with the brief for the 206-foot Utopia IV , built for Miami-based Market America founder JR Ridinger. The waters between downtown Miami and the beach are too shallow for most yachts to tackle without running aground. Utopia IV is an exception, as Rossinavi’s Federico Rossi explains proudly. “Only five shipyards in the world have the technology to make a fast-displacement aluminum hull. It doesn’t have a regular propeller but a water jet, more like a Jet Ski,” he says. “It means the owner gets to use the vessel in downtown Miami, which is an amazing experience.” Don’t be surprised if it’s piloted by a Viareggino, either. Thanks in part to the Crew Network , a recruitment agency with offices in both Fort Lauderdale and Viareggio, there’s a community of expat sailors in South Florida, often crewing yachts that their friends or relatives helped build.

As for that very first superyacht, it has come home—or close to it—these many years later. The vessel changed hands (and names) several times after leaving the Benetti shipyards. The era-defining 282-footer was docked at the International Yacht Club of Antibes for years but now spends most of its days at the marina in San Remo, Italy, a place that it doubtless finds redolent of home. Any passerby would have no idea that the entire genre of superyachts was birthed by this one vessel.

Viareggio remains unruffled by celebrity or money. Every time I’ve walked along the promenade as an adult, it has looked unchanged since my childhood, though, thankfully, the gelaterie no longer offer the garishly blue ice cream that was once commonplace. The waters off the beach here are dotted with fishing boats and pleasure craft. It’s unlikely that most casual visitors would even realize that this is the spiritual home of the superyacht, unless they luck into the majestic sight of a beautiful new vessel making its way through the Darsena en route to its maiden voyage.

IF YOU GO…

The Principe di Piemonte is the toniest hotel in Viareggio. The five-star spot across the street from the beach has a Michelin two-star restaurant on its fifth floor, with superb views out over the water and a menu by Giuseppe Mancino . Otherwise, try the 44-room Plaza e de Russie , also with its own Michelin-star restaurant, or the Villa Ariston , much homier but with direct connections to the yacht world, as it’s owned by the Codecasa clan. The plushest hotel in the whole of Versilia is the Augustus , sitting among pine trees in its own park in Forte dei Marmi, a 25-minute drive north along the coast. The 1,300-square-foot Lidino suite is closest to the private underpass to the beach.

For food, the shipyards’ de facto canteens include Il Porto, a high-end spot with a terrace overlooking the water on via Michele Coppino , or the casual trattoria Cicero ; order the spaghetti with arselle (baby clams) or the branzino all’isolana (with potato, tomato and olives), both local specialties. For more than seven decades, da Giorgio , a short walk north, has also drawn the shipwrights with its fish-heavy menu, which pivots depending on the fishermen’s catch each morning. It’s worth the short drive into the hills to the town of Camaiore for dinner outdoors by the stream at Osteria Candalla , a converted water mill; the menu is heavy on Tuscan classics, like wild boar and tordelli, Versilia’s riff on ravioli.

If you’re a sailor, the waters immediately off the coast are clear and blue but unremarkable. Better to head out to the Tuscan Archipelago , a necklace of islands in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas and similar in appearance to Sardinia, rimmed with sparklingly clear water and fine beaches. Elba is the largest and most populous, but the others are more appealing. Anchor in the bay off Giannutri , home to barely 20 people, or head to the other side of the island to visit the superb ruins of a Roman villa.

Other than Carnival, which precedes Lent, Viareggio is also known for its Puccini Festival , which takes place every July and August immediately south of the town center in the frazione, or hamlet, of Torre del Lago . It’s where the composer of La Bohème, Tosca and more lived for much of his life. The first series of concerts was staged here in 1930, just six years after he died.

Maxi Yacht e imbarcazioni sopra i 42 piedi i protagonisti dell’edizione 2024 della Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio

Mario Pellegrini

Benetti Happy me

Intrepid parade for a Benetti superyacht in Viareggio

Minimal Logo

Viareggio hosted a primetime (fantasy) show

It’s called Happy me . But if the driver had sneezed, there would have been very little reason to be happy. Very frequent in the Dock of Viareggio , this show always stuns those who pass there for the first time. We’re talking about the Benetti-branded superyacht that, a few nights ago, proceeding undisturbed through the streets of Viareggio, kept tourists in suspense, all with their noses upturned, their eyes wide open, their mouths open and, we add, the sign of the cross mentally performed.

The giant of the sea roams around undisturbed: the video

It is true that residents of this c harming town of Versilia are used to seeing gigantic floats making their way through the crowd, especially in this period in which the famous Carnival of Viareggio is taking place from February 1st-25th. But, what appeared that night was not a majestic scenography set to amaze the public but an imposing boat that had just left one of the various shipyards of Viareggio and that was traveling on board a truck in Via Coppino . Right there, the owner of a very popular trattoria, as soon as the hull of Happy Me passed in front of his restaurant, immediately went out and filmed the intrepid passage of the yacht with his smartphone.

The video, in fact, shows the yacht passing very close to the roadside, the roofs of parked cars and the open-air sections of the restaurants arranged one after the other on the sidewalk, full of customers sitting at the tables and thrilled by such stunning unscheduled event. And indeed, the bulk of Happy me, one of the many masterpieces of the prestigious Italian shipyard, has nothing to envy to Carnival floats: 132 feet (40.24 m) long , she can accommodate up to 11 guests and 7 crew members. And it’s a superyacht for the privileged few only: it is available for rental from EUR 190,000 per week , charges excluded.

Congratulations to the reporter and to…..the driver!

That night, the citizens of Viareggio enjoyed (for free) the umpteenth parade of a mega jewel of the sea . And if we believe we should thank the prompt reporter who filmed the scene and posted the video on YouTube, with hundreds of views in a few hours, we feel it is equally fair to congratulate with the driver of the truck carrying the luxury boat. With ease and surgical precision, in fact, he managed to maneuver through very narrow and delicate spaces, with a very precious load on board . A happy ending for everybody.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

A town transformed by superyachts

The popular seaside resort of Viareggio has a rich shipbuilding heritage at its heart.

For many people, the Italian city of Viareggio signifies two things. Beaches and carnivals. Tourists flock to the region’s sandy shores in the summer months. And when winter arrives, it’s a waiting game until the famed ‘Carnevale’ – one of the most popular festivals in Italy, which draws over a million people every year.

But there’s another aspect to this Tuscan city that is often overlooked. Viareggio is one of the world’s most significant shipbuilding hubs; where almost a fifth of all superyachts are made.

A town transformed by superyachts

Perini Navi

Its reputation as a shipbuilding hub is nothing new. The region has long been famed for its marble and back in the day the city built strong wooden ships to transport it to wherever it was needed. “This laid the foundations,” says Viareggio-based shipbuilders Perini Navi . “Then, when demand increased, shipyards evolved and shifted from making wooden boats to building stronger and more modern vessels. Nowadays, Viareggio is where the world’s largest and most exclusive yachts are made.”

There are a cluster of superyacht shipyards in the region including Perini Navi , Benetti , San Lorenzo and VSY . Together, they represent some of the most well-known names in the superyachting world. The impact of that on the city itself is significant, especially as many of the yard’s hire locally. “Many of our employees are originally from Viareggio,” says Benedetta Moreno from Benetti, a yard that has over 350 yachts on its books. “There’s a profound bond that links the yard to the wider region.”

A town transformed by superyachts

Those employees can spend months or years on the sorts of complex, custom-build projects that come out of these high profile yards. “From the project brief to the final product, it might take up to three years; that’s about 250,000 man-hours on average and there could be up to 60 people involved each month during construction,” says Perini Navi. It’s not unusual to find generations of local families who have all worked at the same yard – handing down traditions and craftsmanship skills as they go.

Of course, it helps that Italy is renowned for its artistic flair; and the kudos of having a ‘made in Italy’ stamp on your superyacht is not to be underestimated. Perini Navi agrees. “The region’s artistic roots have helped to drive its success in the industry. Tuscan cities have always been renowned for their artistic flair and craftmanship and people willing to buy a superyacht expect everything – from the interior and the exterior – to look perfect.”

A town transformed by superyachts

San Lorenzo

With the likes of Florence, Siena and Pisa on its doorstep, the yards at Viareggio have their pick of the best leathers, woods, and marbles – not to mention the most experienced and sought-after designers and architects. And in the superyacht industry, having the cream of the crop on speed dial is paramount. Each owner tends to have specific tastes when it comes to design, so each custom-built superyacht ends up looking completely unique. While one owner might want a rustic home-from-home, filled with sumptuous creature comforts, another might want more of a showpiece yacht, complete with bespoke artworks and high-end finishes. The ability to choose every last detail is key.

Of course, once the long-awaited yacht is complete, it helps that there are some excellent cruising grounds to explore very nearby these Italian shipyards. “Viareggio is in a good strategic location for sailing enthusiasts,” says Perini Navi. “It is a great place to start enjoying sailing in the region.” And what better way to celebrate your new yacht than by taking it for a spin up the Ligurian coast to the famed Cinque Terre? Or south to Capri?

A town transformed by superyachts

Back in Viareggio proper, there’s even an annual yachting event – the Versilia Rendez-Vous , which takes place every May. “The event celebrates the yachting world as a whole,” explains Perini Navi. “It represents the combined effort and teamwork between major shipbuilders. Collaboration is fruitful, not only among shipbuilders but also with other local companies that operate as ambassadors of Italian excellence.” The 2019 edition saw over 20,000 visitors flocking to the region to explore the latest offerings from local yards and suppliers.

Of course, whilst the superyacht is being built, there are, typically, many journeys back and forth for the owner as he or she puts the final touches on the boat. And there’s yet another tick in the box for Viareggio. “Many of Benetti’s owners choose Viareggio and Tuscany to build their yachts because these are great and unique places to visit and stay during the construction,” says Moreno. A quick stop by the shipyard and then onwards to one of those famed sandy beaches? What’s not to like?

Viareggio Yacht Charter, Italian Riviera

Home to some of Italy's greatest luxury yacht builders, Viareggio is a spectacular cultural destination famed for its city-wide Carnevale, yet often overlooked by the majority of tourists because of more famous Italian Riviera destinations such as the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site or the Tuscan Archipelago farther south. See it all on your own week-long luxury yacht charter as you cruise to the best natural and man-made attractions Tuscany and the Italian Riviera have to offer.

Viareggio will appeal to all ages and a range of interests: Shoppers have high-end galleries and jewellers to choose from as well as a great selection of locally made perfumes, chocolates and souvenirs.

The hours will slip by in the galleries, museums and historic villas before an evening partying in the local bars or back on board your impressive motor yacht or sailing yacht.

For water sports, it's possible to find a quiet beach away from the city for paying on the jet skis and towable toys without distractions, and snorkelers and Scuba divers have a good selection of rocky lagoons and islands to swim with the region's marine life.

When you want some peace and quiet all to yourselves, your Captain can simply sail away to a quiet cove for sunbathing and alfresco dining in complete privacy.

Five quick reasons to visit Viareggio

More about this part of Italy

Viareggio is situated in an excellent position in the northern part of scenic Tuscany and in the southern part of the Italian Riviera, which is home to the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage site as well as Forte Dei Marmi, the Italian equivalent of Monaco . Elba and the rest of the Tuscan archipelago is just a short cruise away, as are the marvellous beaches of Corsica for when you want to escape the crowds completely.

This region could easily be included into a week-long Western Mediterranean luxury charter or extended to two weeks or more, taking in the sights of the French Riviera , Italian Riviera, Corsica and even Sardinia .

Viareggio yacht Charter Experiences

Holidaymakers visiting Viareggio are never at a loss for a beach as the coastline is one sweeping sandy curve all the way from Carrara in the north to Livorno in the south.

As might be expected of a city with so many prestigious luxury yacht builders, there is a museum (Museo della Marineria) dedicated to the equipment used by 'Palombari' and has displays for such names as Benetti, Perini Navi, Sanlorenzo and many more.

Across the river, Torre Matilde is one of Viareggio's most ancient structures and dates back to medieval times. Another excellent attraction is the Museo Carnevale Viareggio, which well worth a visit for family groups and those interested in the artistry of this annual event.

Recently restored Villa Argentina is more than 160 years old and features frescoes in the Art Noveau style as well as temporary photography exhibitions, so even if you have visited with a different group years ago, there is always something new to see.

Villa Borbone and chapel close to the beach borders the forest park beside the beach and is the location of concerts throughout the summer months. Spend a peaceful morning wandering the grounds before lunch and games on the beach.

In between shopping and waiting for happy hour, go on a wander through Sentiero della Lecciona, a forest park where it's possible to spot wild pigs living in the forest and there are many trails for hiking or biking. Alternatively, join in the Italian tradition of la passeggiata, an evening stroll through the pedestrianised city streets where you might pick up a gelato, glass of wine or a dinner en route.

Whether you fancy the finest dining in the land or indulgent chocolates, coffee and gelato, the city is a treat for the taste buds and you're sure to leave for home with a couple new recipes. Travel north to Carrara to sample the region's finest red and white wines with your lunch or dinner, and you can purchase some of your favourites to accompany you on the rest of your cruise.

After sunset, there is an abundance of choice in town or along the seafront for intimate drinks and dining, including bard such as Bagno Roma and Bagno Milano, and Michelin-quality restaurants Il Piccolo Principe and Romano ready to make a special occasion truly unforgettable.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate.

The summer average climbs from a comfortable high of 22°C/72°F in May to a peak of 30°C/86°F in August. The warm summer weather stay right through September and into October, when the change of rainfall steadily increases with the approach of the winter months.

However, the coastal location in the heart of the Mediterranean produces relatively cloudless days and chance of rainfall throughout the year is low when compared with many other Western Mediterranean destinations.

The sea temperature warms up from May to reach a comfortable average of 25°C/77°F - perfect for tempting younger family members into the sea and for beginner Scuba divers.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter

Few layers are required for the warm summer months, however smart-casual dress is worn in town, and when visiting religious sites shoulders and thighs should be covered to below the knee for men, women and children.

A warmer outer layer is always recommended for cooler evenings, blustery days and air conditioned interiors, and in winter a coat and umbrella are recommended.

Best time to go

The summer months are the best time to visit, when services are fully operational and the weather is at its best. However if visitors want to avoid the crowds and visit some of the more popular landmarks, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn will provide excellent weather conditions and emptier beaches.

Catch Carnevale on Shrove Tuesday and the parade floats on the three Sundays before and the Sunday after the event.

IL TIRRENO – NAUTICAL DOSSIER

The new luxory gem. The super yacht “Panorama” realized by The Italian Sea Group

The elegant profile, the materials, the lines and the refined style make of this yacht a masterpiece of the “Made in Italy” yachting industry. A design entirely realized in steel and aluminium, which enable long ocean crossings in total comfort, with its 50 meters in lenght and its tonnage of 499GT.

This is the new superyacht “Panorama” of the semi-custom production which joined a few months ago the Admiral fleet, flagship brand of The Italian Sea Group, global operator in the luxury yachting industry operating in the construction and refitting of motoryachts up to 140 meters. The Group, which was already the owner of the brands Admiral and Tecnomar, early this year acquired the brand Perini Navi Spa, absorbing into the holding the the historic brands Perini and Picchiotti, adding, to the already existing venue in Marina di Carrara, the production sites located in Viareggio and La Spezia.

And thanks to the enlargement of the production capacity, The Italian Sea Group was able to devolve Admiral brand also to semi-custom production: an halfway solution between serial and entirely-customised production, and from that arouses the project Admiral Panorama, created in collaboration with the Piredda & Partners studio which worked on the interiors and exteriors design.

The result is a steel motoryacht with an aluminium superstructure, with no visual barriers and an elegant fluidity between exterior and interior spaces that create a continuous and natural dialogue between all environments, characterized by large volumes and structural details which emphasize spaciousness such as ceiling height and large windows. A careful selection of fine, natural materials such as light wood, stone, and rough metals convey to the interiors a refined and enveloping atmosphere. Panorama can accommodate up to 12 guests who can stay in the four spacious suites on the main deck and the VIP cabin on the lower deck, which can be converted to a large and comfortable TV room and which is flanked by a fully equipped gym area. The owner’s area on the upper deck features open views on three sides and overlooks the private deck forward.

“The key to Panorama’s success lies in the perfect combination of an impeccable, modern and well-balanced aesthetics with the strength of a bold concept that guides every design choice,” explains Nicolò Piredda, creative director of Piredda & Partners. A result made possible thanks to the collaboration and visionary approach of The Italian Sea Group.”

A choice that immediately received positive responses from the market, to the extent that just two months after the project’s launch in September, The Italian Sea Group sold two Admiral Panoramas to be delivered in 2025. The two sales, one of which was finalized by Monaco-based broker Smart Yachts, confirmed the validity of the choice to focus on semi-custom production, while still remaining on a very high level positioning with the exclusive use of noble and more sustainable materials such as steel and aluminum. A choice that involves the Admiral brand with the Panorama project but that also characterizes the relaunch of the Picchiotti brand, a historic brand of Italian yachting, with the launch of a new fleet of four motoryachts from 24 to 55 meters called “Gentleman’s yachts,” inspired by the classic and elegant style of American yachts from the 1960s.

“ We are dedicating a great deal of commitment to the development of the Panorama project and Picchiotti’s new Gentleman fleet, which have enabled us to enter the semi-custom megayacht market ,” says founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino. “ This strategy allows us to expand sales while avoiding compromising the Group’s design capacity committed to the large custom made yachts ”.

Order book close to 1 billion

From sleek and modern yachts to more dynamic and sporty ones, from large sailing vessels to vintage 60s yachting lines, not forgetting repair and refit services.

There is all this in the world of The Italian Sea Group (Tisg), a luxury yachting operator listed on Euronext Milan and the leading Italian manufacturer of yachts over 50 meters, founded and led by entrepreneur Giovanni Costantino. Headquartered in Marina di Carrara and with two offices in Viareggio and La Spezia, the Group operates in the market with five complementary brands: with the flagship brand Admiral, known for the elegance of its yachts, and with Tecnomar, synonymous with sportiness, design, and high performance, to which the brands Perini Navi, a world leader in the production of large sailing yachts, and Picchiotti (formerly owned by Perini), a historic brand that even traces its roots back to the late 16th century, have been added since January 2022, while the refit service is entrusted to NCA Refit, ror which Tisg is increasing the spaces in the Viareggio and La Spezia shipyards, that became part of the Group with the acquisition of Perini.

With this operation, in fact, the group can now count on additional space and production capacity that have been added to those at the Marina di Carrara headquarter which is, to date, the largest private dry dock in the entire Mediterranean, where the Group has two docks of 200 and 147 meters, the only one capable of accommodating yachts up to 140 meters. Large yachts are, after all, the company’s core business, with an order book that is about to exceed 1 billion euros.

Picchiotti and Perini in the colossus . Tisg CEO Giovanni Costantino: “ Brand to be relaunched and new sites in which to diversify production .”

Two new brands to relaunch and strengthen, new production sites where to diversify production, with a client portfolio that on mega yachts is about to exceed 1 billion euros and a 64 percent increase in revenues in the first 9 months of the year. it is a decisive moment for the development of The Italian Sea Group, the nautical giant led by entrepreneur Giovanni Costantino, who at the turn of this 2022 analyzes the transformations and strategies for the near future.

It was undoubtedly a significant year, especially considering the acquisition of Perini Navi Spa, which allowed you to enrich the group with two historical brands such as Perini and Picchiotti. What added value do you think you have obtained and how are you moving to relaunch these brands?

“ We had great interest in the Perini Navi shipyards in Viareggio and La Spezia. In Marina di Carrara we made substantial investments and have about 120,000 square meters directly facing the sea, but we needed more space, which we have today. With reference to production, Perini will produce exclusively medium and large sailing vessels that, while respecting tradition and historical lines, will be innovative in design and in sailing and propulsion solutions, while Picchiotti’s relaunching project includes a semi-custom fleet of four 24- to 55-meter motoryachts named Gentleman’s Yacht ”.

How has the acquisition of the Viareggio and La Spezia sites changed the group’s production organization?

“ Thanks to the acquisition of Perini Navi, an important increase in production capacity became possible. The operational resumption of the Viareggio and La Spezia sites was done in record time, and the new production plan is already well underway. The 53-meter sailing yacht Jasali II is currently berthed in Viareggio, for a general survey and redesign of the exteriors operated by our company NCA Refit, while production of the 60-meter superyacht Katana is proceeding apace. The Viareggio site will then also see the return of the Picchiotti brand with the production of the Gentleman’s yacht fleet. In 2023 we will complete the modernization of the Viareggio site with the TISG 4.2 investment plan, which also includes the expansion and renovation of the Marina di Carrara headquarters and the La Spezia site, where the production of the Tecnomar For Lamborghini 63 has been completely transferred .”

It is precisely with the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 that you have won important awards. What market are you aiming to intercept with this innovative motoryacht?

“ The positive sales trend is further confirmation of the success of this yacht, which has now become as futuristic an icon as the car from which it is inspired. In September we delivered the first model to the U.S., a market that offers interesting growth opportunities in line with our development strategy. Ranked among the luxury industry’s Best of the Best 2022 in the “Motor Yacht under 25 meters” category at the 2022 International Yacht & Aviation Awards last May in Venice. “

More generally, what are the markets the company is targeting through the different declinations of its brands?

“ We sell our yachts to owners of all nationalities. We have launched a commercial expansion plan to expand our business in the U.S., where the summer we also opened our first flagship store in Esat Hampton, Long Island, with extremely positive feedback, and in the United Arab Emirates, as evidenced by the successful landing in Dubai of the Viktoriia motoryacht, Tecnomar EVO 120. “

What moment is luxury boating experiencing? Are you being affected to any extent by the international situation?

“ The nautical industry is having a good time despite the complex geopolitical environment. A cooling off is to be expected sooner or later, but the large yacht segment has proven more resilient than others, partly because the loyal clientele is international and less exposed to recessionary economic scenarios. In situations like this, diversification across markets offers an excellent parachute. “

What are the main new developments you are working on for the new year?

“ We are very committed to our core business, that of large ships from 60 meters and up, but we are also working hard on the development of the Panorama project and Picchiotti’s new Gentleman’s fleet, which have enabled us to enter the semi-custom segment. In the field of sailing ships, the production of 4 new Perini models is proceeding rapidly, also thanks to the partnership with a big name of the international scenario, Malcom McKeon. We will introduce them with a great event at the beginning of 2023. We are also continuing working on the project of the new Maltese Falcon of which I won’t talk up untill it won’t be ready ”.

The issue of sustainability is transforming so many industries. Is boating also coming to terms with this evolution?

“ We have long been on a path of sustainable development. The photovoltaic system installed in 2022 in the Marina di Carrara shipyards has already enabled significant green energy production. Upon completion, it will achieve coverage of 25 percent of the site’s energy needs. With reference to production, precisely because of a company policy, we do not process fiberglass, concentrating our production on aluminum. “

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 . In one hour from Miami to the Bahamas, a fireball that devours sea waves

From Miami it can reach the Bahamas in one hour at a speed of 63 knots. For those more accustomed to asphalt, we are talking about a speed of 116 kilometers per hour. A fireball that devours the waves, as powerful and sporty as the car from which it is inspired. it is the Tacnomar for Lamborghini 63, the innovative motoryacht designed by The Italian Sea Group in collaboration with the Bolognese carmaker, in the wake of a tradition of partnerships with leading brands of luxury and style made in Italy.

“ An innovative yacht that has become a futuristic icon ” Tisg CEO Giovanni Costantino calls it. A fusion of nautical excellence and the power of a supercar, which is proving to be perfect for intercepting a market with excellent growth prospects such as that of the United States, where The Italian Sea Group opened its first flagship store in East Hampton, Long Island, a reference point for boating on the American East Coast, in the summer.

And it was in the USA, more precisely in Miami, that the Italian nautical giant delivered the first Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 in September, consolidating the relationship with Prestige Marine Imports Lamborghini in Miami, which will guarantee North American shipowners an efficient and specialized after-sales service.

“ We are proud to have been the first to deliver this incredible 4,000-horsepower yacht with the unmistakable Lamborgini design that has already conquered South Florida ,” says Bratt David, Ceo of Prestige Marine Imports Lamborghini Miami. A commercial success also evidenced by the fact that the next models will go for delivery in the first half of 2024, despite the fact that production is already at full capacity. Just these days, meanwhile, The Italian Sea Group is also supporting Automobili Lamborghini in the prestigious lounge in Doha, which can be visited until December 18 by invitation only, and which will offer the group the opportunity to get in touch with exclusive shipowners arriving in the Qatari capital to get to know the “Lamborghini world.”

The market: Elegance and product performance captivate shipowners halfway around the world

From the shores of the United States to the glittering shores of the Arabian Peninsula. These are the main markets in which The Italian Sea Group has embarked on a commercial expansion plan, in search of new and potential owners won over by the elegance, modernity and performance of the super yachts designed in the Marina di Carrara shipyards.

Part of this strategy is the recent debut in Dubai of the motoryacht Viktoriia, the first Tecnomar EVO 120, which landed at the Dubai international marine club in early December. Characterized by automotive inspiration, with a sleek silhouette and ultra-modern styling, the EVO 120 immediately caught the attention of a city that has made technological avant-garde its hallmark, going on to reinforce the commercial expansion plan on the Persian Gulf coast, already launched at the beginning of the season by the partnership with Blackorange Superyacht Experts, a full-service yacht brokerage company, as well as with the presence of the Tecnomar brand in the Automobili Lamborghini lounge in Doha.

“ We are thrilled with the commercial response that our yachts are getting in this region ,” comments The Italian Sea Group’s number one Giovanni Costantino. “ Our presence in the Middle East is establishing itself as quickly as in the United States “.

After all, it is precisely from the American market that one of the main orders in the field of large yachts has come. It is the 82-meter Admiral Galileo, sold in December 2021 through the U.S. broker FGI Yachts and due for delivery in 2025, whose keel laying was announced in early October. Designed by The Italian Sea Group’s Centro Stile in collaboration with Bannenberg Rowell Design, the Galileo can accommodate 12 guests and 28 crew members, with lounges of more than 100 square meters on each of the four decks, a cinema, gym, spa, massage area, and even a waterfall that connects two of the four pools on board.

A dream ship that consolidates the group’s role as a global player in the field of entirely custom-made mega yachts, called upon to meet the demands of a demanding clientele unwilling to compromise.

Incoming fleet of maxi sailing yachts . A grand relaunch of the historic Viareggio-based Perini brand is planned for February

he presentation of the new Perini Navi fleet, with which the new ownership of The Italian Sea Group plans to relaunch the historic Viareggio-based brand of large sailing yachts in grand style, is scheduled for February.

It will be a fleet from 47 to 74 meters, innovative from a stylistic and sailing point of view and perfectly in line with the sustainability project launched by the group. Starting point and reference model for the new fleet will be the 56-meter Ketch, for which Tisg announced a few weeks ago a collaboration with Malcom Mc-Keon Yacht Design, a leader in the design of large sailing yachts. It is a partnership that aims to preserve some of the most recognizable stylistic features of Perini design, while reinterpreting them in a modern key with a layout featuring soft, natural lines, large open spaces and large windows to encourage natural light. The carbon sail plan will ensure comfort and sailing performance thanks to the use of Perini Navi’s “sail handling system,” with concentrated and power-assisted maneuvering in the two command stations on the flybridge.

“ We have created a highly specialized technical team in sail yacht design that is working hard on all Perini production, ” says Giovanni Costantino, founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group. “ In early 2023 we will also unveil the new Maltese Falcon, which will be as iconic and innovative in aesthetics and technology as the first one was, some 15 years ago, but in a highly environmentally sustainable version .”

Moreover, the new Perini fleet is linked to the production development plan of the Viareggio shipyards, where the new ownership immediately reactivated production of the 60-meter superyacht Katana and where the refit of the famous 53-meter sailing yacht Jasali II, launched in 1998 and among the most iconic of the Perini Navi fleet, will continue until April. The shipyard has returned to Viareggio for a general overhaul and redesign of the exterior. Soon, however, the Viareggio location will also see the return of the Picchiotti Yacht brand, a timeless name in Italian seafaring, first mentioned in a document from 1575, in which the Picchiotti family is reported to have specialized in building riverboats in Limite sull’Arno. From those early workboats to ocean-going sailing ships, passing through military orders at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the brand’s history has come down to the pioneering years of the first pleasure yachts after World War II. And it is precisely the golden years of 1960s yachting that inspired the new “Gentleman’s Yacht” fleet presented by The Italian Sea Group. A fleet of four semi-custom motoryachts from 24 to 55 meters, with classic lines and elegant silhouette inspired by the American yachts of the time, created together with Luca Dini design & Architecture and with the participation of Kurt Lehman and his Yacht Moments Consultant. Again, the main market will be the Americas, as evidenced by some of the aesthetic details, such as the choice to clad the deckhouse and the interior of the gunwales in mahogany, a material that originated with American culture.

“ This new line, clearly inspired by the golden years of post-war yachting, immediately won me over ,” says Giovanni Costantino, “ because it pays homage to historical models such as Picchiotti’s Giglio or Mistral series, enhancing their stylistic values and sea culture. I am proud to give new voice to a brand that is the heritage of the entire nautical industry, one of the oldest shipyards in the world. “

A project, however, “ in strong countertrend, according to Luca Dini, dedicated to those shipowners who are rooted in tradition and the concept of elegant seamanship “.

Made a multipurpose facility of about 300 square meters with more than 150 seats available . The Academy for training students and employees

There is also training among the goals of The Italian Sea Group’s industrial strategy. A concrete commitment, aimed at its employees as well as university students who may one day become one, in the belief that it is up to the business world to weld the last link in the chain that binds education and the world of work.It is with this objective that the group based in Marina di Carrara gave birth in 2021 to its own Academy, created in collaboration with the University of Genoa and the Promostudi Foundation, dedicated to the creation of paths of excellence for the company’s employees and graduating students of the nautical engineering degree courses and the master’s degree coursein Yacht Design.

To host the Academy, The Italian Sea Group has built a 300-square-meter multipurpose facility inside its Viale Colombo headquarters, with more than 150 seats, which in the past two years has already been attended by universities in La Spezia, Trieste and Naples. It was a choice that grew out of the awareness that it is the responsibility of companies to bridge the last mile for undergraduates to finalize their studies and invest in employee training. In fact, the Academy is designed to foster the interchange between universities and the world of work, allowing students and young talents to put their knowledge in ship design and construction into practice by participating in the creation of unique projects.

Sailing yacht Kirribilli I

Yacht for sale: Kirribilli I combines style and performance

Sailing fanatics will be thrilled to learn that the charming Kirribilli I is currently for sale. The Vismara-built Mas 60 yacht is an 18.6-metre sailing masterpiece crafted in 2001 in Viareggio, Italy. A convergence of exceptional design, impeccable performance and sheer comfort, Kirribilli I is a dream come true for those with a deep appreciation for sailing – don’t miss the opportunity to make Kirribilli I your own.

Classic meets contemporary

Kirribilli I 's design is simple and elegant. Conceived through a collaborative effort between the renowned architect Renzo Piano and Studio Vismara, she marries classic style with contemporary design. The result is a yacht that is arguably in a class of her own, exuding a traditional yet modern aesthetic.

What sets Kirribilli I apart is the continuous design flow that extends across all surfaces. She features an entirely flush deck and streamlined hull lines, giving her a minimalist, polished aesthetic and spacious onboard areas. A striking characteristic is the pale mother-of-pearl shade adorning the hull, deck and bulkheads, giving the impression that these elements are a part of the natural environment. This connection to the world outside creates the perfect atmosphere for a sea-loving owner.

Impressive performance

Kirribilli I is meticulously crafted with advanced technology and refined hydrodynamics, ensuring a remarkable blend of speed and stability. The sandwich hull, composed of fibreglass, carbon fibre and epoxy, enhances both efficiency and strength. Her sail inventory includes an electric furling genoa, a fully battened main sail, a staysail, Code 0 and jib – all by North Sails - and a Doyle gennaker. All of this made her triumphant in the 2012 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Sardinia and the Norwegian Færder Sail Race.

Whether you're sailing in fair weather or facing the challenge of rough seas, Kirribilli I is both durable and reliable. When engine power is required, a 125hp Yanmar engine provides a top speed of 10 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of eight knots, with a total of 2,450 engine hours under her belt.

Your home on the water

While Kirribilli I excels in terms of design and performance, she was also built with onboard comfort in mind. With capacity to accommodate up to 12 passengers in three cabins, including a spacious double cabin located aft, this yacht has ample space for family and friends, and crew quarters are located forward.

The saloon features round tables and crescent-shaped sofas, creating an inviting and sociable atmosphere for you and your guests. Adding to the allure is a hidden fold-down swim platform in the transom, offering a convenient access point to the water.

The attention to detail inside Kirribilli I is also noteworthy. Sharp edges and corners are non-existent in her interiors, ensuring the utmost safety and comfort on board. With a brand-new spray hood among other recent upgrades, the current owner has meticulously maintained the yacht, preserving her in superb condition ready for a new owner.
