Lexcen 38 Revolution

The Lexcen 38 Revolution was designed as Ben lexcen’s idea of the perfect cruising yacht.

Influenced by his admiration for the Herreshoff family designs and the Freedom 40 in particular, ben designed the Revolution.

This particular vessel is was the builders (J.K.Price WA) own boat and has only had two loving caretakers since 1981!

A deceptive boat the 38 Revolution has the appearance of a beautiful old classic , but in reality has the hull of a modern fast passage maker (showing influences of Ben’s famous “venom ” 18 foot skiff).

Rigged as a cutter with furling headsail , she is perfect for short handed or husband/wife cruising.

The interior offers huge amounts of natural light and is a most pleasant environment to relax in.

Featuring two cabins and a genorous galley , Tramp 11 offers a lot of boat for the asking price!

Extensive electronics , shore power and many many features make this a most desirable boat.

“Toucanoes” by Rob Mundle

Posted: 7th August 2014.

World renowned yachting journalist Rob Mundle has written this great article on his journey of finding the right boat for him. Thank you for sharing your story with us Rob, we are happy to make the buying process easy for our clients.

Rob Mundle - 1

It’s more than a decade since I’ve owned an offshore-capable yacht and a lot longer than that since I owned a multi (that was  Catamundlepigeons, a Crowther 40 which I had built and subsequently extended to 43ft).

The desire for a new boat never  waned during those 10-plus years of being “yachtless” – but my workload (which I was enjoying), and the associated travel,  caused me to put that high priority item that was part of my bucket list, onto the back-burner.

Most interesting for me at the time was the thought of buying another mono never entered my mind: it had to be a cat. This wasn’t surprising really because near 30 years ago I chartered the famous 60ft Crowther design, Shotover, and took to  two-handed racing with my great mate, Duncan van Woerden. We were both members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia  in Sydney at the time, a time when to mention multis while sipping on a cold one at the bar was deemed by most members to be as sacrilegious as it was offensive.

Regardless, we saw the light and have been multihull enthusiasts ever since – even though we still love racing monos as well as multis.

I’d lived in Sydney all my life, right up to when I last became “yachtless”. The sale of that yacht coincided with my move from the northern beaches there to Main Beach on the Gold Coast.

Duncan was already well ensconced on the coast with his wife and three wonderful daughters, so it was inevitable that every conversation we enjoyed after I arrived here had a multi element to it.

In early 2013 – when it started becoming all too apparent that life’s runway was getting shorter, not longer – I decided the only thing to do was find my yacht and get sailing again… as a boat owner. Initially the thought was to build a custom design that would incorporate every feature Duncan and I would like to see on a cat. It was a plan based on a firm belief that no existing production cat fully utilised the exceptional benefits that can come from a catamaran concept.

I found a designer in Canada who could get his head around most of the things we wanted for what was a somewhat radical path: among many things, the design incorporated a free-standing biplane rig. There were numerous reasons for this rig  configuration, but most importantly, it was primarily because my last monohull was a Ben Lexcen designed Revolution 38, which had a freestanding schooner rig that was incredibly simple and easy to handle.

Time killed that plan: it was going to take too long to complete the design, build the boat and get her in the water. The only other option was a good production boat that ticked most, if not all, the boxes. After considerable research I settled on a Fountaine Pajot Lavezzi 40 Maestro (three-cabin version), and then the search began. I couldn’t find what I wanted locally, so, working through my brother, Bruce, who is a yacht broker in America, I found just about every Lavezzi for sale in that country. Frustrating times followed as each offer I made did not lead to a deal. I also scanned Europe, and the Pacific without any luck, and then … wouldn’t you know it … fate played its hand:

“THE” boat bobbed up less than 100 kilometres away – in Mooloolaba.I was on the Multihull Solutions stand at this year’s Sanctuary Cove Boat Show talking with “El Supremo”, Mark Elkington, about my frustrating search – and 24 hours later he had come up with what they were certain was the answer. They were certain there was a Lavezzi 40  Maestro, named Carpe Diem, in Mooloolaba with my name written all over it!

It sounded good on paper, and looked good in the images … so, after so many disappointing experiences during my preceding “Looking for a Lavezzi” mission, I just about burnt rubber driving between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, just to make sure I was first to see her. What followed was that surreal experience: I sensed from the moment I saw her while walking down the dock that this was my new “girl”. A whirlwind period of negotiations followed, then, 24 hours later, it was “BINGO”! As far as I was concerned, I’d won the jackpot.

It appears that the owner was as confident that he was going to sell his yacht as I was that I was going to buy it: he suggested that the trial sail be from Mooloolaba to Boat Works at Coomera, where I wanted to do the survey.

The guru of yachting meteorologists, Roger ‘Clouds” Badham, provided the perfect forecast: a light north westerly for our early departure from Mooloolaba in early July, then a 15-18 knot westerly for our passage south down Moreton Bay. We were off…

It was another monumental moment in this sailor’s life, guiding away from the dock with what would soon become my latest  acquisition in a wide range of sailboats owned over almost five decades – starting with 16ft and 18ft skiffs. The sun had barely brought full light to the new day, and the air was crisp, as Duncan, Kelvin and I began the preparation work for setting the main and genoa while heading out of the Mooloolah River. I was immediately impressed by the yacht’s speed under power, and  manoeuvrability, but for a while I struggled with the “softness” of the hydraulic steering: I prefer the positive feeling that comes with cables.

We had plenty of time to adjust to the yacht (not that it was difficult) on the 25nm reach to Skirmish Point, at the southern end of Bribie Island. I actually felt like I was a kid with a new toy at Christmas time – checking everything possible and already planning some minor changes.

One of the many plusses that come with owning a multi shone through once we got to the southern end of Bribie Island: instead of having to navigate the shipping channels for much of the way into Moreton Bay, we set a course that took us directly to Macleay Island, 30 miles to the south … the direct benefit that comes with a draft of little more than one metre. Despite the cloud and the chilly bite in the westerly wind, we enjoyed a glorious reach all the way. Best speed: 12.3 knots.

This part of the passage was particularly interesting for me as it reaffirmed research I had done for my two latest books – “Flinders, the Man who Mapped Australia” and “Cook, from Sailor to Legend”. It made me realise what great seafarers and navigators those two men were, and the difficulties they faced as they tried to find their way around the banks and shallows in MoretonBay (Cook actually named it Morton Bay).

It proved to be a wonderful day of sailing for us. Not even an unexpected 25-30 knot burst of breeze out of the west spoiled it. Instead, we dropped the sails and motored on to our intended destination for the night, Canaipa, on Russell Island. Once there and at anchor we relaxed on the trampoline enjoying “sundowners” while watching the big golden orb disappear below the western horizon in spectacular fashion.

We were up and underway early the following morning, heading for the Gold Coast. With the benefit of a favourable tide we enjoyed a pleasant cruise down the eastern part of the Broadwater, then a delightful run up the picturesque north arm of the Coomera River. We were docked at Boat Works early in the afternoon.

Once the survey was complete the deal was finalised Carpe Diem was on her way to a new home, with a new name. She’s now Toucanoes, and she’s docked very snugly at Southport Yacht Club.

I sense already that this is going to be a longlasting love affair. Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is on the agenda for next year; and Duncan and I have managed to mention the Brisbane to Gladstone race … but we have since realised that thought was probably influenced by alcohol.

Revolution 29

A unique scow bow makes the revolution 29 spacious and fast.

revolution 38 yacht

We are going to have some fun this month—there is an interesting trio of boats to review. I don’t know if you have been following the MiniTransat class ocean racers but you should. These little pocket rockets are amazing boats, very extreme and capable of high speeds in the hands of skilled crew. The class is growing rapidly, especially in Europe. Minis use a box-type rule that limits LOA to 21 feet 4 inches, so designers have to look for innovative ways to gain sailing length and power.

Enter the scow bow Minis. At first look I was inclined to think, “Oh God, please don’t make this fast.” But I knew that scow bows have a long and successful history so the chances were strong that this bow would work. It works on the many scow one-design classes and even the old, sedate, CCA rule had Hoot Mon, a scowlike yawl with a successful race record.

It was inevitable that a builder would jump on the scow bow for a family cruising boat. Look at that beam and volume forward. Along came Afep Marine with designer David Raison. Together they have produced the aluminum Revolution 29, along with its 21-foot little sister. It’s funny looking; there’s just no way around that. The ends are snubbed off, there is zero spring to the sheer and the only attractive line I can find on the entire hull is the chine that runs around the bow.

I suspect that the heeled waterlines for this hull would look fairly normal with that chine making a somewhat V-shaped entry. Using 27 feet 2 inches for DWL gives a D/L of 232. This is not a light boat. L/B is 2.53 indicating plenty of beam, as if your eye had not already told you that. Draft with the board down is 5 feet 7 inches and the board-up draft is 2 feet 4 inches. There are twin rudders.

The accommodation plan is pretty amazing considering it is a 29-foot boat. The expansive capital-U-shaped berth has replaced the dreaded V-berth. The bad news is that the U-double berth is an extension of the main cabin settee, so there is no privacy forward. The good news is that it will be very convenient to have breakfast in bed. There is a double quarterberth aft, but it’s pretty tight with just enough standing room to pull on your pants.

revolution 38 yacht

The galley is big for this size boat. I don’t like stoves up against a bulkhead so I would move that stove forward to line up with the forward counter then put counter aft of the stove. I like to be able to put pots either side of the stove. But there is quite a bit of counter space as drawn. There is a forward-facing nav station to starboard and a small but adequate head aft.

I was out racing last weekend and studying the square-topped mainsails in the fleet. The more I looked, the more the shape made sense and the pointy-headed triangular mains began to look silly. Square-topped mainsails mean you can’t have a standing backstay but with enough spreader sweep that’s not a problem. Spreader sweep angle on the Revolution looks to be 28 degrees. The SA/D of the Revolution is 23.37 and that’s plenty of power for some exciting sailing.

One thing for sure  is that working on the foredeck will be easy. The headstay is about 20 inches aft of the stem so there is lots of room to work around it. On deck, a retractable sprit can be mounted for the asymmetrical chute. Interestingly, the cap shrouds go to chainplates on the rail. The lower diagonals go to chainplates inboard near the edge of the cabintrunk. This will make it easy to get past the shrouds when you go forward.

I would hope this look provides the owner with blistering speed and sumptuous comfort.

LOA 22’8”; Beam 11’6”; Draft 3’7” (board up), 8’6” (board down); Displ. 8,818 lbs.; Ballast 2,425 lbs.; Sail area 743 sq. ft.; Auxiliary 18-hp diesel; Fuel 11 gal.; Water 66 gal.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

an old photo of a small boat being launched into the water with a crane

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

two men, one on a mobility scooter, are on a boardwalk with water and a small boat behind them

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

a picture of a scrap book with photos of a boat and cursive writing

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

a black and white photo of a little boat in sail on a river

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

Revolution 24 : A successful version of the aluminum scow bow cruiser

Revolution 24 in navigation

AFEP, a small shipyard based in La Rochelle, was the first to adopt scow hulls for the cruising yachtsman. For its third model, it has found an interesting balance between design, performance and choice of materials. Presentation.

Briag Merlet

3rd AFEP scow signed Raison

Launched with the Revolution 22 in 2012, the range of scow-bowed sailboats from the AFEP shipyard in La Rochelle continues to expand. Still backed by architect David Raison , renowned for his Mini 6.50s, the builder then developed the Revolution 29, and in 2021 will present the third, intermediate model, the Revolution 24, a 7.25-meter-long, 2.89-meter-wide yacht. The latter continues to benefit from hydrodynamic innovations, while taking advantage of a roof with a more elaborate design than the first born of the range, in line with the elegant 29-footer.

Revolution 24

A simple deck and a robust boat

In addition to the aforementioned bow, it is the choice of materials that is striking when you first see the boat . AFEP remains faithful to its favorite material, aluminum. It gives the boat a rustic feel and is solid against impact, while remaining more easily recyclable than composite. The insulation and anti-skidding are made of visible sprayed cork. The resulting empty displacement of the boat is 2,248 kg. The mainsail with horn of 26 m² and the genoa of 17 m² should propel the boat at speeds more than reasonable.

Cockpit du Revolution 24

With a tiller, a large cockpit, a fixed central footrest and a single piano winch on the roof, the Revolution 24 plays it simple. The roof cap effectively protects the electronics by avoiding reflections, while adding a touch of elegance. We can regret the tiller rail which does not facilitate access to the small bathing platform, but which secures the cockpit.

Plateforme arrière

The front deck and its impressive surface are a strong argument for the boat at anchor . The cushions, attached to the roof by snaps, invite you to lie down. They also allow to hide the large plexiglass panels, avoiding the greenhouse effect inside the saloon.

Generous cabins and saloon

Going down the 3 slightly narrow steps, one discovers a galley along the port side. There is a sink and two gas cookers on gimbals, as well as a nice worktop and storage .

Une descente un peu étroite

On the aft port side, a large double berth is located under the cockpit.

Couchette arrière

On the bow is the boat's most charming feature: its large saloon, surrounded by equipment and textile storage .

Carré

On the starboard side, separated from the axis by the sabre keel well, which allows to pass from 1.90 m to 0.60 m of draught, there is a sanitary space with toilets. A manhole gives access to a technical storage area under the cockpit.

Zone de stockage

If the choice of the sabre keel partly constrains the layout without allowing to take full advantage of the space, the Revolution 24 nevertheless benefits from a nice interior volume for its size.

The boat is proposed in its basic version at 89 500euros TTC, with an inboard engine of 13 horses.

The Boat that Kept the Cuban Revolution Afloat

revolution 38 yacht

On a windy November evening, a band of rebels huddled anxiously on the banks of Tuxpán River. They were former convicts and future world leaders, Naval officers and weapons smugglers — each willing to risk their life to overthrow a murderous dictator.

Overhead an ominous sky loomed, foreshadowing a harrowing voyage ahead.

Standing between the men and their destiny was a treacherous 1,200 nautical mile journey. And despite stormy seas, poor planning and the infinitesimal odds of overpowering Cuba’s military forces, their ship kept their mission afloat.

That ship was a 58-foot Wheeler warship named Granma.

Granma’s Origins

Howard E. Wheeler Sr. founded The Wheeler Shipyard Corporation in 1910 in Brooklyn, New York, to build high-quality, beautifully designed yachts up to 85 feet in length. By the late 1930s, demand was so high they had to expand their facilities to ramp up production.

Shortly after the United States entered the war in late 1941, the government leased land near the Whitestone Bridge in Queens to the Wheeler shipbuilders. Wheeler immediately switched gears to support America’s defense and began producing a fleet of ships for the Navy, Army and Coast Guard. All pleasure boatbuilding was halted.

Granma was originally designed and commissioned for military use as part of a much larger fleet of ships for the war effort. Her carvel-planked hull was made of long-leaf pine on oak frames designed to accommodate 12 passengers with a cruising speed of 9 knots.

After the war, the military ships built by Wheeler were either sold, scuttled or repurposed for private use.

In 1950, Granma first appeared on U.S. Coast Guard records registered to Baton Rouge businessman Robert Erickson . While on a Gulf cruise, Erickson and his wife fell in love with Tuxpán, Mexico, on the banks of Tuxpán River. They decided to build a vacation home there and slept on their yacht while construction was underway.

One frightening night, the Ericksons awoke in Granma’s cabin to thieves who threatened their lives and took all their valuables. Souring their dream, the Ericksons changed tack and relocated to Mexico City, leaving their beloved boat behind. When a storm rolled through Tuxpán, most likely a direct hit from Tropical Storm Florence in 1954, the story of Granma was almost sunk for good.

Granma’s Unlikely Rebirth

Over a thousand nautical miles away in Cuba, Fidel Castro had instigated an ill-fated armed revolt against the Batista government at the Moncada Army Barracks , which led to a 15-year prison sentence. However, under public pressure, Batista released Castro and his collaborators just two years later, a decision that would come back to haunt him.

Fidel and his brother Raúl fled to Mexico, a hub of anti-Batista activists at the time, including Argentinian Marxist Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Mexican arms dealer Antonio Del Conde . Guevara and Del Conde were the exiles’ closest allies in Mexico City, sharing Fidel’s ideals and arming, hiding, funding, feeding and training his growing rebel band.

While passing through Tuxpán to run errands for the rebels, Del Conde saw a white hull peeking out of the marsh grass on the edge of the river. The ship was clearly wrecked, but the name on the transom was legible: Granma. Del Conde was so captivated by the ship’s beauty, he tracked down the Ericksons in Mexico City. While Granma’s diesels were inundated, her keel was broken and the entire boat was generally a mess after being partially submerged, Del Conde was undeterred in his desire to purchase her. He offered the Ericksons $20,000 — equivalent to more than $220,000 today — to buy a ship requiring significant repairs to ever become seaworthy again.

A Bigger Vision for Granma

Granma became Del Conde’s prized possession. He knew it would take him years to restore the ship to her former glory, but he was committed.

His comrade Fidel was also committed … to plotting a revolution. He fervently believed if he could make it to Cuban shores and survive for 72 hours he would be triumphant in overthrowing Batista. After shooting practice one day, Del Conde went to the river to check on Granma, unaware that Fidel followed him. When he set eyes on the mangled ship, Fidel declared his return to Cuba would be on that very boat.

In an instant, Del Conde’s timeline to restore Granma went from years to weeks. He and his team replaced the keel, planks, generator, lights and wiring. The two diesel engines were sent to a GM factory in Mexico City to be repaired. Del Conde commissioned his armory to fabricate new fuel tanks that maximized the space below deck. Sea trials were conducted to establish fuel burn statistics, but without the tonnage of dozens of men and gear on board, their calculations were merely a stab in the dark.

Sailing into the Storm

November 30, 1956, was the date chosen for an attack against the Cuban military, where allies on the island were expecting Fidel’s amphibious force to lead the fight. Castro knew the journey would take a minimum of five days; yet inexplicably he chose November 25 to depart, ignoring the stormy weather forecast and leaving he and his crew no margin for error.

On the evening of the 25 th , Castro’s band of 140 rebels congregated on the bank of Tuxpán River. This posed the first of many challenges – Granma was designed to carry 12 passengers or up to 25 for short trips. Fidel selected 81 men from the group for the mission, including his brother Raúl, trusted aide Ché Guevara and Norberto Collado , a WWII Naval hero with expert navigation skills and an uncanny resistance to seasickness. They packed onto the ship like sardines, shoulder to shoulder with no life vests, only oranges to eat and the hope that they had enough fuel to get to Cuba.

Under the cover of darkness, they sailed down the river and into the Gulf of Mexico where furious seas and 30-knot wind gusts greeted them with impunity.

Tumultuous waters lifted Granma and threw her from cresting waves so hard that the men feared she would sink beneath their feet. The seasick passengers were packed in so tightly they had no choice but to vomit on one another. With the horrendous stench permeating the ship, things went from bad to worse over the next eight hours. The transmission struggled and the men had to bail water out of the boat after the bilge pump failed and Granma took on dangerous amounts of seawater.

For days, Granma’s heavy load struggled against the waves, wind and current. At the helm, Collado slowed her speed to just 6.7 knots, further delaying the crew’s anticipated arrival time.

Ironically, overloading the ship actually made Granma more stable. The weight provided resistance against the roiling seas, without which she would have likely overturned.

Finally, on the third day, the frontal system passed and gave way to mellower seas and sunny skies. After some engine tinkering and winds that calmed to manageable trade winds of 20 knots, Collado revved up Granma to 7.5 knots and steered her toward Cuba.

Making Landfall

Against all odds, Granma’s sturdy construction had delivered them to this point. But their luck was about to run out.

None of the passengers had anticipated such an arduous journey, and misfortune continued to follow them onto land. Guided by the Cape Cruz light, Granma reached Cuba three days behind schedule and not at Castro’s intended rendezvous point with his allies.

Their nautical charts for the coast had been wrong. Their fuel was low. Dawn was approaching. And unbeknownst to them, Batista had caught wind of their surprise attack.

Fearful of being discovered by enemy air patrols, Castro ordered Collado to run Granma aground at full throttle about 100 yards from mangroves. More shipwreck than amphibious assault, the woozy sailors quickly began loading mortars and machine guns into a dinghy, which promptly sank. They had no choice but to lower themselves into chest-deep water and carry their rifles over their heads into the swamp.

The rebels marched through the mangrove forest, but just three days later, their guide betrayed them by leading them straight into an ambush by government troops.

Nearly all of Fidel’s men were killed or captured. A few lucky souls eluded either fate: the Castro brothers, Ché Guevara and about a dozen other men managed to reach the safety of the Sierra Maestra mountains.

revolution 38 yacht

The Aftermath

While the initial coup did not go as planned, Fidel and a handful of his comrades lived to fight another day . They rallied a force of about 300 insurgents who took up arms in a succession of victories against government forces. As Fidel’s forces swarmed to nearly 1,000 men, Batista fled to the Dominican Republic in January of 1959. With the previous dictator gone, Fidel’s revolutionary army seized the capital and put him into power for the next five decades.

Granma Today

Norberto Collado was one of the captured rebels during the unsuccessful coup. His comrades freed him from prison in 1959 and he returned to military service. He rose to the rank of captain, and one of his duties was being the caretaker for their beloved Granma.

The Erickson’s former house in Tuxpán was turned into The Mexico-Cuba Friendship Museum , where Granma’s important role in the Cuban Revolution is on full display. You can find Granma restored to pristine condition in a glass-structure behind the Museum of the Revolution in Havana .
