The Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is now open: Officials and residents rejoice.

Cape Coral officially reopens the Yacht Club Community Park beach on Saturday, more than a year after Hurricane Ian shuttered the park, and residents are already taking advantage of it.

"This is a great day for our community," Mayor John Gunter said Thursday on the beach.

'Four hundred and eight days ago, we had an (almost) category five hurricane hit this area, and this area of our city was the hardest hit."

Kids and their parents will play together in the sand, while older residents lounge and soak up the sun once again at the reopened Cape Coral Beach.

Margie and Jerry Wright, two 70-year-old South Cape Coral residents, were sitting on their beach chairs on the sand, taking in the atmosphere of the hot day as they used to do pre-Ian.

"I've been going back three or four times a week," Wright said "Not having it was terrible."

Background on opening

Hurricane Ian struck Cape Coral on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying renovation plans for the Yacht Club Community Park and shutting down the beach.

Since that time, the city worked toward reopening the area and moving forward with the Yacht Club Master Plan. They experienced permit delays from the Army Corps of Engineers.

"We would have liked to have had this beach open many months ago, but only in the last few weeks, have we gotten the permit to do the beach renourishment.

What work was done at the beach?

Cape Coral announced it received the corps' OK to move forward on Oct. 30 and began the process.

Gunter and Councilmember Bill Steinke said the next day dump trucks carrying sand rolled into the area.

The following days were filled with heavy machinery combing through the beach and adding sand in areas that were lacking.

'"Like the mayor, said literally the sand was ready to be brought in the moment that we got the okay to do that," Steinke said.

What's open at the Yacht Club park?

While the main Yacht Club Ballroom building is closed, alongside the surrounding buildings and amenities, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant is open.

The surrounding parking lots are open, and temporary bathrooms are available to beachgoers.

The Boat Ramp remains closed.

What's next for the Yacht Club?

The city council discussed and gave direction for major overhauls to the future designs of the Yacht Club buildings and layout.

Steinke also added that the city is still awaiting permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the marine-related improvements.

"As soon as that permit is available, we are ready to go to work and get those get that seawall done and get the docks put in so everybody can enjoy everything that they possibly can as soon as they possibly can, and then all the amenities will come next," Steinke said.

Cape Coral Yacht Club project moving forward as beach opening is slated mid-November

A recent development for the Cape Coral Yacht Club will have the beach open in mid-November.

"The Yacht Club beach is scheduled to reopen in mid-November," said Cape Coral Spokesperson Melissa Mickey in an email statement Monday morning.

What happened?

The city of Cape Coral announced it has received the OK to move forward with beach nourishment at the Yacht Club.

Capital Improvements director Paul Clinghan presented the latest information at a meeting Wednesday, adding that the city is still awaiting permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the marine-related improvements.

"It just happened yesterday, we did receive the sand renourishment permit,” City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said.

The city previously stated that once the permits were issued, the parks department would purchase and apply sand to the beach within a month.

The city had planned to close the area for two years for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated. Then Hurricane Ian struck on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying plans, but shuttering the beach.

Despite strong opposition, the city plans to move forward  with a complete demolition by early 2024. Plans for the demolition of the yacht club building will go out to bid in the next few weeks.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, which boasts a beach, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant, a historic ballroom building, and other park amenities, is the city's premier gemstone.

Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, devastated the area leading to the park's closure and stalled contentious renovations that were being discussed prior to the storm.

The park was closed and fenced off for months until July when the parking lot and driveway to the park opened to accommodate  the reopening of the Boathouse restaurant.

Delays, delays, and delays

During a recent meeting, Ilczyszyn said the city experienced a three-to-four-month delay over the restaurant reopening.

"About four months ago, an Army Corps reviewer basically stopped the project and said they saw on the TV that the Boat House was opening and that it was basically creating soil and beach into the river,” Ilczyszyn said.

He said the city had to get its surveyor involved.

When asked when the project can see more permits approved, Corps spokesperson Amanda D. Parker said there was no timeframe available.

"We are currently reviewing multiple applications that we received for the Cape Coral Yacht Club," Parker said. "Unfortunately, we do not have a timeframe as to when, or if, USACE permits will be issued to the Yacht Club."

What's next?

Kimley-Horn will present the Yacht Club master plan and concepts from earlier this year to the city council on Nov. 8.

Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter hopes to have Yacht Club beach reopened at summer's end

cape coral yacht club reopening

The Yacht Club and its facilities and beach have been closed and fenced off for more than eight months, leaving residents wondering when they might able to frolic in the waters and watch the sun set.

As Cape Coral ponders massive changes to its Yacht Club facilities, Mayor John Gunter is pushing to open the beach area to the public by September.

"I hope by September or so, (which) would be my preference to try to get it open," Gunter said.

Here's what we know:

Ian background

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park was hit hard when Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, made landfall on Sept. 28.

In addition, The Boathouse restaurant's building incurred massive damage with the building's roof collapsing. The restaurant is expected to open soon.

Planned renovations were put on hold and the park and its facilities closed as the city and its residents went through recovery.

Cape Coral Yacht Club closed Cape Coral Yacht Club damaged, and renovations are on hold

Council decides future of Yacht Club What's the future of Cape Coral's Yacht Club? Council ponders massive project

In January, the Cape Coral council met and decided to take a "clean slate" approach to renovate the heavily damaged facilities.

The changes could include a new two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and restaurant.

Plans for razing the main buildings were announced in May, and despite opposition from community members, are still ongoing. Though, the city will make efforts to preserve parts of the original ballroom building.

What needs to be done?

Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission has been using the area to crush boats, according to spokesperson Melissa Mickey.

Mickey said the beach is a safety hazard.

"Currently there is no electric, no bathrooms and we need to ensure the shoreline area is clear of debris hazards," wrote Mickey in an email response.

The mayor's plan

Gunter said the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission will be at the Yacht Club area until August, so the city will work toward reopening.

"First, develop a plan to at least get it cleaned up and get it open where it's safe," Gunter said.

He said the city will clear debris in the waterway, so it doesn't pose a danger to swimmers.

Once plans for the Yacht Club resume, Gunter will work on keeping the beach open through implementing phases for the project.

"I think we could probably petition off the northern part of the Yacht Club, do those improvements, and in the meantime, get the beach back open," Gunter said.

Expansion of the beach and or renourishment are expected to occur at a later date once the project starts.

The News-Press (Fort Myers)

Demolition of Cape Coral's Yacht Club slated for April will cost almost $1 million

The city of Cape Coral is preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations.

"It should start in April," said David Hyyti, interim director of capital improvements, during a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday.

Demolition of the Yacht Club was previously set for late December/January. Despite plans for its renovation, Hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022, demolished the buildings and shoreline, requiring a massive change in plans.

Here's what we know:

What are the current plans for the Yacht Club?

The city had planned  in early 2022 to close the park for two years  for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Then Hurricane Ian struck, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach for more than a year.

Since that time, Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, has been working with the city to revamp renovations.

These plans now include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

Previous discussions  said the project could cost up to $100 million.

Previous Coverage Cape Coral set final site plan for the Yacht Club; timeline for renovations still shaky

Who has been contracted?

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted for the demolition and deconstruction of the Yacht Club.

The firm is also tasked with preserving a portion of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and the front glass doors with the Yacht Club written on them.

What will it cost?

A contract was awarded to the construction firm on Feb 26 after piggybacking off other entities' existing contracts for a fixed price of $987,716.04.

How long will it take?

Once the permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protections are approved, work will begin within 30 days and take 60 days to complete.

Construction will not affect the now-open beach area.

If the work starts in April, complete demolition could be finished by July or August.

Concerns over boathouse reopening in Cape Coral

As seven year Tom Bella put it, the people of Cape Coral just want their yacht club back, or at least parts of it. But City Councilman Tom Hayden told WINK News that the only part they’re working on now is The Boat House restaurant. And that doesn’t give yacht club lovers more to look forward to.

Councilman Hayden said as of now, that’s the only part of the yacht club that will reopen in the near future.

IT'S GOING DOWN: Cape Coral creeps closer to Yacht Club demo day

cape coral yacht club reopening

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — On Monday, people walking around the Cape Coral Yacht Club spoke with Fox 4's Colton Chavez about the city demolishing the property.. where damage still lingers more than a year and a half after Hurricane Ian.

“It's way overdue it's been 16-17-18 months?” said one person.

During a recent Cape Coral city workshop, David Hyyti, the Director of City Capital Improvements said the $987,716 demolition project had been awarded to a contractor who is expected to start work within the next 30 days.

On Monday, Fox 4's Colton Chavez asked city leaders if they could narrow that down any — a city spokesperson said there was no official date, but they hoped to start during the month of April.

City leaders said the demolition will take about two months.

The final design for the yacht club includes an expanded beach, a new restaurant, a resort-style pool, and a four-story parking garage.

Of course, where there's a beach, there's always this question: will any of the parking be free?

City leaders said it was to early to say whether free parking was part of the Cape Coral Yacht Club's new design.
