How can you enjoy life at anchor as much as sailing? With the innovative flared hull design of the Oceanis 40.1, and steps extending over a third of the bow, BENETEAU has broken new ground but made no concessions. The result is a hull that has true speed potential and is stiff under sail. Above the waterline, her deck plan and ultra-spacious interior by  Nauta Design  is unheard of on a boat this size. You cannot help feeling that you are aboard a 45 foot cruiser!

Interior Design

With a  walnut or light oak ambiance , the styling of the interior by Italian designers Nauta, is remarkably bright and excels in the skilful arrangement of the living spaces. She is available with two, three or four cabins and a  C-shaped galley  on the starboard, offering lots of storage and a spacious worktop. On the port side, there is a large saloon with a table and a removable bench, and a chart table at the foot of the companionway provides ample working space. Everything is modular, so that everyone can live the way they want and enjoy sailing wherever the wind takes them.

The philosophy of the Oceanis 40.1 is to make sailing and mooring really pleasurable. The strengths of this cruiser, studied in detail by the architect Marc Lombard and the BENETEAU design office, are unrivalled space inside, a huge deck plan and the ability to clock up miles when you are cruising.

The ergonomics and easy movement in the cockpit make life on board so simple. Nothing interferes with the joy of life at anchor. Feel like splashing around the boat in an idyllic creek? The transom easily converts to an extensive swim platform, similar in size to the ones you find on the largest Oceanis cruising yachts. Having access to the sea is an integral part of life on a sailing yacht, and this one is a model of its kind. 

FOR SAILORS SEEKING EXCITEMENT UNDER SAIL…

As there is no one way to sail, and because everyone takes their cruising at their own pace, the Oceanis 40.1 comes in several versions. Sailors keen on performance can choose the First Line version, with a longer mast and a greater draught. The in-mast furling system and self-tacking jib will make manoeuvring easier shorthanded. A classic mast for a semi full batten mainsail is also available.

The hatches and the many hull and coachroof portholes, two of which look towards the cockpit, fill the boat with natural light and ventilation, making her exceptionally bright. You really feel like you are entering a much bigger boat! The Oceanis 40.1 comes in 4 different versions with two, three, and four cabins to fit everyone’s idea of a holiday on board. Looking for an upgrade? Wish your boat were just a little bit bigger? Put these new boats, all longer than 40 feet, on your shopping list — or at least on your wish list.

Sportfishers.

Sportfishing boats have something of a split personality. They're heavily powered, designed with wave-slicing hulls, and built to get to the fishing grounds swiftly. On the other hand, they have luxurious appointments below decks for the crew to relax on the ride home or for entertaining.

Regulator 41

This center-console is a serious offshore fishing machine. The new 41 is the largest ever from the North Carolina builder and is designed to get you out to the canyons and back quickly, in comfort and style. With a deep-V hull featuring 24 degrees of dead-rise at the transom, this hull requires plenty of power to get it moving, but that comes in spades from the quadruple 350-hp Yamaha outboards mounted on the Armstrong bracket. The boat exceeded 60 mph in testing, but according to published performance data, the most economical speed seems to be in the 35 mph range, still plenty fast enough for most folks, but with a vastly reduced thirst to make that 600 gallons of fuel last longer.

Quadruple 350-hp Yamaha outboards on the Regulator 41 offer speeds topping 60 mph, though toning down the throttle to the 35-mph range is a bit more economical.

Options include an upper helm above the T-top and an outdoor galley behind the standard three-position seat/leaning post. The console interior features a small galley, a dinette that coverts to a double berth, and an enclosed head with shower, so overnight stays are a possibility for a couple. A diesel generator fitted below the cockpit sole provides power to the air conditioner, battery charger, water heater, and other domestic loads. There's no getting away from the fact that this is a big center-console, but the Yamaha Helm Master joystick control system eases nerves when it's time to bring the boat back into the dock. Viking's first 48 convertible, launched more than 30 years ago, was an almost instant hit. A revamped model appeared in 2002, and this latest model debuted at the 2016 boat shows. Equipped with a pair of MAN diesel engines, the new 48C is designed to cruise in the 30-knot range, depending on the engines. The boat is about fishing first, and it features almost 125 square feet of cockpit space. That's not to say Viking has taken any shortcuts below decks.

Interiors on the Viking 48C are luxurious and can be customized to the owner's tastes.

The accommodation spaces are roomy and luxurious and can be customized to the owner's taste. Viking is a semicustom builder, but the first yacht featured a large flat-screen television with a surround-sound system that would put many home theaters to shame, a gourmet galley, and sumptuous staterooms to relax in after a hard day's fishing. Joinery choices are either teak or walnut in either satin or gloss finish.

With these boats, it's all about the journey. Most trawlers travel at sedate speeds, typically below 10-knots, and while the so-called “fast trawler” has emerged, trawlers tend to be displacement or semi-displacement hulls, so speed is governed more by hull length than by engine power.

Krogen 50 Open

The one-level design of the Krogen Open 50 makes for better socializing.

The new Krogen Open 50 model reflects a great deal of customer feedback, which led to a design departure: an open and continuous saloon/galley/pilothouse main deck. Rather than several steps to the helm, everything from the large rear cockpit through the saloon to the wheelhouse is on one level, making for better socializing. All of the attributes that Krogen is known for — exquisite joinery, rugged construction, and phenomenal seakeeping ability — are still here on the Open 50. Krogen isn't straying far from its target audience of voyagers and liveaboards. Available with either single or twin John Deere diesels, and with a 1,240-gallon fuel capacity, the anticipated range is 2,100 miles at 8 knots, with the single engine model, but slow down to 6, and that jumps to a staggering 5,000 miles, enough for an Atlantic crossing. Nordic Tug 44

The Nordic Tug 44 is a semi-displacement hull that delivers slow and steady cruising. At a leisurely 8 knots from a single 510-hp Volvo diesel, the 44 uses less than three gallons of fuel per hour and has a range in excess of 1,700 miles, so stops at the pump are fewer and farther between.

Rather than cram in lots of berths, the layout has a huge master forward, with an island queen, along with a generous guest cabin aft. This is a boat designed for a couple to cruise in comfort, with the option of welcoming friends and family on board once in a while. The main saloon, with galley, is almost the full beam of the boat, and just three steps lead to the separate pilothouse, which has internal steps leading to the optional flybridge; the pilothouse is a great new feature for this year, keeping everyone inside if the weather turns nasty.

If you want space on board, it's hard to beat a catamaran on room for living, entertaining, lounging, and personal space. While sailing craft make up the majority of catamarans, the popularity of power catamarans is growing. With an engine in each hull, the widely spaced props offer superior maneuverability in tight areas.

So you like sailing, but you're not too keen on living life at an angle? Love sailboats, but the lack of space would drive you nuts? If you answered yes to these questions, then a catamaran could fit your future. Nothing touches a cat for interior volume, and the Leopard 48 doesn't disappoint. For maximum sleeping space, opt for the four-cabin layout, which also has room for four heads with showers. But if the number of guests will be more limited, then the three-cabin layout is the way to go, which gives over the entire starboard hull to the owner, with a large queen cabin aft and a settee and voluminous head and shower compartment forward.

On deck, a raised helm station gives excellent all-round visibility, and the large cockpit is seemingly big enough to host the Super Bowl. Built by Robertson and Caine in South Africa, the Leopard 48 is the private version of The Moorings 48 charter version, so if you want to try before you buy, book a charter vacation and give a similar boat a workout for a week or two.

With more than 1,500 square feet of sail area, the boat should sail well. But when the breeze dies or you need to maneuver around the docks, a 39-hp Yanmar saildrive in each hull will push the boat with ease. LeopardCatamarans.com

Length: 42'6" | Beam: 13'10" | Draft: 3'3" | Fuel: 180 gal. | Water: 80 gal. | Waste: 50 gal. | Weight: 22,500 lb.

Proa or cat? To the outsider, the Aspen looks just like any other power catamaran. But take a closer look and you'll notice that the starboard hull is about 30 percent wider than the port hull. Instead of having two engines, the Aspen has only one — in the starboard hull. To prevent the boat from turning in circles, the boat has a narrower port hull, and thus less hull drag, so the boat tracks straight. The standard Volvo 330-hp motor uses less than 2 gallons of fuel per hour when cruising at 8 knots, but if you want, the boat can top out at close to 20 knots.

The helm of the Aspen C120 is outfitted with two Stidd chairs.

The generous beam means there's room for two double cabins, each with its own head compartment, plus a single, which shares a head with the guest double. The saloon is where you'll spend most of your time, though, and thanks to the generous beam, there's plenty of living space. The helm is forward to starboard and has Stidd chairs for captain and mate, while aft is the dinette and wraparound settee. The galley is to port, ahead of the door to the cockpit, which has a ladder to the flybridge.

Sailing Cruisers

What could be more exhilarating than skimming across the water as your boat heels in the breeze? Modern sailing cruisers incorporate advanced rigging designs to make them easier to sail, and larger yachts often feature spacious galleys and cabins, larger social areas in the cockpit, and creature comforts.

Beneteau Oceanis 41.1

Unveiled for the first time to the U.S. market at the 2016 Miami International Boat Show, the Oceanis 41.1 is a great example of a modern, midsized sailing yacht. Twin wheels, split backstays, a chine crease, and an opening transom that turns into a generous swim platform have become commonplace in recent years, and they're here on this latest from French builder Beneteau.

The cockpit is wide and ideal for socializing. The rig is easily handled with all lines leading aft. With the port and starboard sheet winches close to the two wheels for the convenience of the person driving, the boat could be single-handed without too much trouble. The foresail is self-tacking, so bringing the boat about is as simple as it gets. The mainsheet sits clear of the cockpit on top of a large arch, keeping the cockpit free of lines.

The Beneteau Oceanis 41.1 has a sleek European feel both on deck and below.

There are a number of options for accommodations below, depending on the owner's desire, but there's no getting away from the sleek European feel to this yacht, which is apparent as soon as one descends the companionway. Morris Yachts M42

There's a popular bumper sticker that says, "Life is too short to own an ugly boat." No one will ever call the M42 ugly. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built to order by Morris Yachts in Maine, the M42 looks elegant from any angle.

Rather than squeeze in as much accommodation as possible belowdecks, the M42 is more about spending time enjoying the surroundings as you slice through the water on this yacht. Morris refers to the M42 as a coastal cruiser. With bunks, the galley, and the head below, the M42 is set up to be sailed by a couple or even a singlehander for days or extended weekends on the water.

The M42 has a perfect setup for singlehanders or couples alike.

All control lines, sheets, and halyards have been led under covers to control/winch pods in the cockpit, within easy reach of the helmsman, leaving the deck clear and safe. There are no stanchions or lifelines to detract from those curves, and the carbon-fiber mast and light composite construction ensure that the boat performs well, even in light airs. Power Cruisers

Buy a power cruiser longer than 40 feet and you are likely to get some serious luxury for your money. Unlike trawlers, which may feature equally well-appointed interiors, power cruisers often have planning hulls and larger motors so if you want to get some place in a hurry these boats could be the choice for you.

Sea Ray 450 Sundancer

Like the Regal 53, the Sea Ray 450 Sundancer has a glass door at the rear of the saloon, with the main living spaces all on the same level. There are so many windows on the main deck that Sea Ray actually refers to this as a sunroom rather than saloon. A retractable sunroof lets in even more light and air. Power comes from a pair of Cummins 550-hp diesel engines, with the option of either V-drives or Zeus pod drives.

The Sea Ray 450 Sundancer has a full-width master and other high-end appointments such as a media room that can accommodate a 50-inch flat-screen television.

Accommodations below include a full-width master. Although Sea Ray uses darker trim woods, the interior of the boat is light thanks to large windows below that can hardly be called ports. Other features that give the boat an air of sophistication include solid surface counters in the galley and heads, glass-bowl vanities, and an optional outdoor kitchen and grill adjacent to the swim platform. The largest model in the Regal lineup, the 53 Coupe is all about entertaining and having fun on the water. Like other luxury coupe manufacturers, Regal adopted a design featuring the cockpit and saloon on one level. Large glass doors at the rear of the cabin slide out of the way, joining the saloon and cockpit into one large, seamless area — perfect for large gatherings.

The Regal 53 Coupe has spacious accommodations as well as a transom garage with tender with electric outboard motor.

There is plenty of room below decks, and the large transom door opens up to reveal a garage replete with tender with electric outboard motor. Interior accommodations are bright and airy thanks to large hull side windows, a sliding saloon roof, and the aft glass door. The boat has two large staterooms with queen beds, with the option of adding a third cabin with bunk beds.

U.S. Navy’s New 40-Foot Defiant Patrol Boat

Naval news reached out to the u.s. navy’s naval sea systems command (navsea) to learn more about any possible replacement to the mark vi patrol boats that are slated for divestment and early retirement due to the mark vis’ very expensive maintenance costs. navsea has replied to naval news, showcasing their new 40-foot patrol boat, commonly named 40pb, that is not a replacement for the mark vi. despite that, the 40pb is indeed new and one of the latest small boats to join the u.s. navy’s fleet..

Naval News has received a reply from NAVSEA in mid-May 2022 regarding possible small boat additions and replacements.  NAVSEA focused specifically on a welded all-aluminum 40-foot Defiant -class Patrol Boat , called the PB(X).

Naval News: Since 2017, have any new 40-foot Patrol Boats been delivered to the U.S. Navy, and if so, how many as of 2022?

NAVSEA: A total of 56 [40-foot Patrol] boats have been awarded to Metal Shark Boats and as of 9 May 2022, 20 boats have been delivered to the U.S. Navy.

Naval News: What is the name of the PB(X)…Defiant….or Mark ##?

NAVSEA: The craft is commonly referred to as the 40-foot Patrol Boat (40PB).

Naval News: Any comments at the slower speed of 35+ knots versus 45 knots for the Mark VI?

NAVSEA: The Navy does not comment on specific speeds of our platforms. Naval News: Will the 40-foot Defiant replace any of the Mark VIs, and if so, why the shorter boat and lack of Mark 38s 25mm autocannons?  What will the standard armament be?

NAVSEA: The 40PBs are not a replacement for the 78PB [78-foot Patrol Boat] (Mark VI).  They are a replacement for the current 34-foot Patrol Boat (34PB). 40PBs will be armed with the same manned crew served weapons as 34PBs, specifically the M240B and M2 machine guns.

Naval News: What units will receive the PB(X)? NAVSEA: The 40PB will be assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Group 1 (MESG-1) in San Diego, CA, and MESG-2 in Little Creek, VA under the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command.

Naval News: Will the PB(X) operate in open seas, CONUS ports and bases, littorals, forward-deployed, Persian Gulf, or ride in the well deck of LPDs?

NAVSEA: The 40PB will operate at-sea, in harbors, rivers, and bays. 40PB will also operate across the littorals while conducting maritime expeditionary security operations across all phases of military operations by defending high value units, critical maritime infrastructure, ports, and harbors both inland and on coastal waters.

The 85-foot Defiant Near Port Coast Vessel

Naval News was also tipped off on a larger 85-foot Near Port Coastal Vessel (NCPV) Defiant boat as a new acquisition and asked NAVSEA to clarify.

Naval News: Have any Near Port Coastal Vessel (NCPV) been delivered yet to the U.S. Navy, and if so, how many as of 2022? NAVSEA: No.  NCPV has an active production contract for Foreign Military Sales, but not for the U.S. Navy.

Naval News: What is the name of the Near Port Coastal Vehicle?

NAVSEA: The Navy refers to this program as “Near Coastal Patrol Vessel (NCPV).”  Metal Shark Boats refers to it as 85’ Defiant on their website, but the US Navy does not use this nomenclature.

The NCPV (which is based on a Dutch shipbuilder Damen Stan Patrol 260 design) does not replace the Mark VI Patrol Boats as it will not be in the United States Navy’s inventory.

Here are the 2022 data for our research on the average cost of buying and owning a sailboat.

What does it cost to buy a sailboat.

The average price of a new sailboat per foot in USD:

• under 30 ft: $2,400 per ft
• 30 - 50 ft: $5,700 - $8,500 per ft
• over 50 ft: $11,900 - $65,400 per ft

On average, second-hand sailboats go at 1/3 - 1/4 of the cost of a new boat:

• under 30 ft: $815 per ft
• 30 - 50 ft: $3,020 per ft
• over 50 ft: $5,100 - $17,000 per ft

Price of new sailboats

I've looked at the prices of thousands of yachts (really) on one of the largest yacht marketplaces in the world (- not manually, don't worry: with the help of their search function). This is what I came up with:

The price of new sailboats ranges from roughly $1,412 - $65,433 per foot. I've used these numbers to calculate the following list:

The price of used sailboats ranges from roughly $471-$17,044 per foot.

Prices on Craigslist

To get an average of the price of a used sailboat, I went over to Craigslist. I took the first 10 relevant search results for sailboats under, and over 30 feet.

Of course, the averages here are very speculative, as prices vary from day to day. But it gives a broad range of what to expect.

Over 50 feet, listings become meagre. I believe people tend to not place their 80-ft sailboats on Craigslist, but sell it through a broker instead.

Median Craigslist price of a used sailboat:

• under 30 ft: $7,900
• over 30 ft: $96,900

Average Craigslist price-per-foot of a used sailboat:

• under 30 ft: $354 per ft
• over 30 ft: $1,845 per ft

What are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet?

Last year we analyzed 2,000 offshore designs to bring you a list of the most popular bluewater sailboats .

However, most people are searching for a boat in a particular size class. So, we decided to do a double-click and look at the best sailboats under 40 feet for offshore sailing.

If you’re interested in an even smaller boat, there are plenty of great options under 30 feet in our list of the best small sailboats for sailing around the world .

The characteristics that make a sailboat a bluewater sailboat are a hotly debated topic, so we wanted to use real-world data and find out what cruisers are using to cross oceans and sail around the world.

We looked at 2,000 boats that entered the Pacific Puddle Jump  (PPJ) over the last 12 years. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the PPJ, it’s a rally that crosses the Pacific ocean.  We took part in 2017 and had a ball!

Just be aware that a bluewater boat isn’t necessarily offshore-ready. Our top five picks are all older boats and will undoubtedly require work.

Every cruiser we know made substantial repairs and additions before going offshore: adding watermakers , life rafts, solar panels, and more.

Also, always have a boat inspected by a professional and accredited marine surveyor before buying it or taking it offshore.

So, without further preamble, here are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet.

The best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet

1. the westsail 32.

The Westsail 32 is one of the most iconic bluewater cruisers. Built by the Westsail Corporation in the 1970s, this plucky, small sailboat has developed a cult following over the decades. Since 2009, 19 have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

The Westsail 32 is known for its sturdy construction, seaworthiness, and classic looks. In fact, it set the standard for what a real bluewater cruiser should look like. In 1973, the Westsail 32 was featured in Time magazine and inspired many Americans to go cruising.

Though popular, this boat has earned the unenviable nickname “ Wetsnail 32″, a reference to its poor ability to windward and sluggish performance. But Westsail 32 owners don’t care that they won’t be winning any races.

What the boat lacks in speed it makes up for in classic looks and excellent offshore cruising characteristics. Many owners have crossed oceans and circumnavigated the globe in their Westsail 32s.

2. Tayana 37

The Tayana 37 is a wildly popular Bob Perry design. It first rolled off the production line in 1976 and there are now several hundred of them sailing the world’s oceans.

Above the waterline, the Tayana 37 boasts beautiful traditional lines. However, Perry wanted to avoid the unenviable (read: sluggish) performance characteristics, associated with double-enders.

So, he designed the Tayana 37 with a cut-away long keel and moderate displacement, maintaining the classic look, while achieving reasonable performance.

The Tayana 37 has a devoted following of offshore enthusiasts. Since 2009, 12 Tayana 37s have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

3. Hans Christian 38T

The Hans Christian 38T is a full-keeled, heavy displacement bluewater boat with a long bowsprit and a clipper bow, giving it a distinctive appearance. It was first introduced in 1976 and was produced until the early 1990s.

If you hadn’t already guessed, the “T” in the name stands for “Traditional”. Like many boats on this list, it takes a cue from Crealock’s famous Westsail 32 which sparked a craze in the 1970s and 80s for Scandinavian-style doubled-enders.

It’s gained a reputation as a capable and seaworthy cruising yacht. Many owners have crossed oceans and completed circumnavigations in Hans Christian 38Ts.

By our count, eight Hans Christian 38Ts have participated in Pacific Puddle Jump rallies over the last 12 years.

4. Island Packet 380

I’ve always considered Island Packets the Rolls-Royce of the bluewater boat world. Their distinctive cream-colored topsides make them easy to spot and their robust bluewater construction makes them the envy of many far-flung anchorages.

Designed by Bob Johnson and built by Island Packet Yachts in Florida, the Island Packet 380 was first introduced in 1998. 169 were built before 2004, over which time it gained a reputation as a capable and comfortable offshore cruiser.

Having been built in the ’90s and early 2000s, this is a relatively newer boat. In many ways, it offers the best of both worlds, a classic-looking boat with all the modern cruising conveniences.

The Island Packet 380 design prioritizes safety and stability. It also has several offshore features including standard twin bow rollers, a divided anchor locker, and ample storage for cruising gear.

Life below deck is comfortable too. With a 13-foot (4 meter) beam there’s plenty of room for liveaboard amenities.

The Island Packet 380 is a popular choice for long-distance cruising and offshore passages. Since 2009, six Island Packet 380s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

5. Ingrid 38

The Ingrid 38 is a double-ended sailboat that was originally designed for wood construction in 1938.

In 1971, Bluewater Boat Co. began building a fiberglass version. The design proved hugely popular and more than 140 were built.

With a full keep and heavy displacement, the Ingrid 38 epitomizes the traditional bluewater cruiser. Yet, it remains a well-loved design today. Since 2009, six Ingrid 38s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

She is a full keel vessel that offers a high degree of stability and comfort in any seas The below is my last survey May 30, 2012 Yacht Survey and Condition Report At the request of Mr. Peter M Licnikas the undersigned surveyor conducted a condition and valuation survey of the yacht “GUST-O” a 1978 48 ft Mermaid Ketch sailboat as it lay on jack stands at Yankee Landing Marina Merrimac St, Newburyport, Ma 01951. Name: GUST-O Year: 1978 Builder: Pali Shiang Taipei Hsien, Taiwan Model: Mermaid 42 Ketch Documented: 624951 Hull ID: TAC420251278 Dimensions: LOA 48' LOD 42' Beam 12’2” Draft 6’3” Displacement: 14 net tons Type: Sail Intended Use: Pleasure Hull Graphics and Color: White hull, green bottom Estimated present Value: $71,200.00 Estimated replacement value $245.000.00 Scope of Survey: The purpose of this survey was to estimate the current market value and marine risk evaluation. The survey of this vessel is based solely on careful visual and non-destructive inspection of all accessible portions of its structure and available equipment. Complete inspection can only be made by removal of soles, decking, headliners, ceiling or hull lining, tanks, and joiner work. Complete inspection of machinery, auxiliaries, piping, tanks, systems, electrical wiring, electrical and electronic equipment can only be made by continued operation or by disassembly. This would be damaging in nature and prohibitively time consuming, and therefore was not done. This vessel was surveyed while in lay up at Yankee Landing Marina, Merrimac St. Newburyport, Ma 01951. I visually inspected all sections of the vessel and its equipment detailed in this report. General Description: This hull is a reinforced fiberglass molding hand laid up using alternate layers of mat and woven roven with polyester resin. It is stiffened with web floors, bulkheads and joinery flanges. The hull design incorporates a molded lead filled keel and rudder for ballast. The hull is heavily built and is rigged as a Ketch designed for sail with a 45’ main mast, and 25’ mizzen mast. Bottom: Underwater surfaces were smooth and fair with no signs of damage or recent groundings. The bottom paint was in fair condition. I sounded the entire hull with a phenolic hammer and found no voids, blisters or delamination. I also placed an Electro-physics moisture meter on the hull and found it to be in the acceptable dry range with readings of 15 and less. Through hull fittings were all bronze and appeared original and in good condition, however none were removed for inspection. I observed several through hull fittings that were plugged or partially blocked by barnacles and growth. I recommend the fittings be cored out. The keel is lead filled for ballast rated 9400lbs. The propeller shaft is a 1” in diameter stainless steel supported with a rubber stern bearing with an external housing, all in good condition. I placed a target on the shaft and rotated it. The shaft tracked true within visual tolerances. The rudder is supported at the top with a 1.5” bronze shaft. The shaft and bearings turned smoothly with no signs of wear. Boot top up was white epoxy paint. The paint was in overall good condition with only minor scuffs. I observed one deep scratch on the starboard side that I recommend be repaired to prevent moisture intrusion into the underlying fiberglass. Topsides: Topside teak wood has been removed and replaced with fiberglass with non skid. The topsides were in good condition solid with no signs of moisture or rot. Cabin ventilation is through four Lexan covered 24”X24” teak hatches and four brass 6” air scoops. The life rail was rubber coated stainless steel cable with stainless steel stanchions. All stanchions were well secured and solid. All cleats were stainless and wood in good condition well bedded and solid. The rub rail is teak in good condition. Tanks: The two fuel tanks were rectangle in shape located under the cabin sole. The tanks were aluminum and well secured with proper fill and vents and rated at a total of 88 gallons. Water tanks were rectangle in shape and located under the cockpit sole. The tanks were well secured and fitted with proper vents and fill. The tanks were rated at 110 gallons. Spars & Rigging: Masts and booms are constructed of wood and appeared straight and in good condition. Both masts were rigged with no stretch stainless steel cable and turnbuckles. All rigging was in good condition well secured to the hull and properly tightened. The masts were in need of new paint. Hull Interior: Below decks I removed loose floorboards, opened lockers, and removed drawers for the best inspection of the hull interior and bilge area. I found all bulkheads to be secure with no signs of stress or damage, and the bilges to be in need of a minor cleaning. The interior was finished in custom teak in good condition, and consisted of a V berth forward with full head and shower. To the rear was a salon area consisting of a bench seat on the starboard side and a dinette on the port side. To the rear of the dinette was a galley consisting of a 4 burner natural gas stove with oven, ice box, and double stainless steel sink. The starboard side contained a large chart table with electrical panel. To the rear was a second full head on the starboard side and large master stateroom with queen size bunk. Bilges where sited were generally clean. Bilge pumping was with one super gulper manual pump in the galley. Along with a 12v rule 1500 main pump, and a rule 1000 backup. Steering on board is a pedestal center post with a 3’6” wheel turning a Sea Star hydraulic system rated at 1000 psi. Electrical: The vessels electrical supply is both 120ac powered by a shore power cord only, and 12v. The shore power only powers several outlets. All AC outlets were GFI protected except the outlet near the chart table. I recommend that outlet be changed to a GFI outlet in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12v system not powered up at this time. The 12v wiring was well run, secured, and appropriately sized with a breaker panel and battery selector switch mounted above the chart table in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12 v system was powered with three 800 amp combination starting/house batteries and one 1200 amp and 1000 amp dedicated house batteries. All batteries were in acid proof boxes and well secured located under the aft bunk. Fire Protection: Fire extinguishers consisted of four BC size I. Propulsion Machinery: The yacht power is from a 1978 Perkins 4108 diesel rated at 80 hp. The engine has a 60 amp alternator for charging the starting and house batteries. Engine compartment ventilation was through two 3” intake and exhaust. Engine mounts bolt to steel I beam beds with no apparent signs of movement. Fuel lines are copper hose in good condition. Engine seawater intake is through a bronze ball valve with sea strainer. Engine exhaust is direct to the transom through rubber hose. Fuel filtering is with a Racor filter/water separator in good working order. Lube oil was clean and filled to the proper level. Engine was not running at this time due to winter layup. Engine controls were mounted in the rear cockpit with a single throttle/shift lever with push pull cables. The cables functioned smoothly and were in good working order. THERE IS NO WARRANTY GIVEN OR IMPLIED FOR THE FUTURE USE OR LIFE OF THE ENGINE DESCRIBED HEREIN. Ground Tackle: Ground tackle on board consists of a 40 lb plow type anchor with a good lead of chain and of 5/8” nylon anchor rode. I also have all the documentation, manuals and full descriptions of exactly what was dome to the boat during the refit. 29 feet/10 foot beam, Universal M-18 Diesel (700 hrs estimated), Harken furling, electric head and holding tank, dripless shaft seal with new shaft & prop. All new teak wood inside, new companionway (Lexan), perch seats, new Sunbrella cushions, new dodger and sail covers, new stove, pressure water, new aluminum water tank, new port lights (lexan) Sobstad main,150% Genoa (good condition) new main and jib halyards, all interior coverings are new. AGM batteries, all new LED interior lights. This boat is completely refurbished and ready to sail. The boat is presently on the hard at still winterized at my local yacht club and was last used in the fall of 2014. It is seaworthy and is open for inspection. The hull is in good shape without blistering. The gelcoat is shiny and the deck has been refinished (see pictures). I also have an extensive overhaul picture library for anyone interested. The deck is sound with no soft spots although it is 40 years old and there is some dampness in the cored deck as well as the rudder but nothing that will prevent this boat from safe operation.
