A Russian oil tycoon was found dead after reportedly being treated with toad venom to cure a hangover

  • Former oil exec Alexander Subbotin was found dead over the weekend, according to Newsweek  and Russian media outlets.
  • TASS, a state-owned news agency, said that he was discovered in a shaman's home in Mytishchi.
  • Subbotin is the latest in a grim trend: Russian business people who have died under strange circumstances .

Insider Today

Russian media outlets reported that an oil tycoon was found dead over the weekend at the house of a shaman, according to Newsweek .

TASS, a state-owned news agency, said that he was discovered in a shaman's home in Mytishchi, and authorities are investigating, Newsweek reported .

The Moscow Times, an independent Russian news site, also reported on the topic.

Per TASS, it seemed that he suffered from a heart attack, and a source told the Russian outlet that he was highly intoxicated when he showed up at the house, Newsweek noted .

Another source, telegram channel Mash—though this has not been verified by police, Newsweek noted—said that he was there to get a hangover cure in the form of toad venom, having been friendly with the shaman and his wife for some time, The Independent reported .

Alexander Subbotin used to be high up at Lukoil, Newsweek and others have reported.

Lukoil is the country's second-largest oil producer, according to Reuters . It employs over 110,000 people, according to the company's website .

Subbotin's brother, Valerie, who also worked in the upper reaches of Lukoil, owns the 184-foot Galvas yacht, and is worth an estimated $100 million, according to SuperYachtFan.

As Newsweek and other outlets noted, Subbotin is one of several Russian business people and members of their families who have died under weird circumstances  in the last few months.

At least six have as of late April, Insider has reported , many of whom were linked to large Russian energy companies.

"In all cases, there are widespread suspicions that the deaths may have been staged as suicides, but who did this and why?" Grzegorz Kuczyński, director of the Warsaw Institute's Eurasia Program, told Fortune , Insider noted.

One was Sergey Protosenya, whose wife and daughter were found dead, too.

His son, Fedor, who is still alive, told MailOnline he does not believe local police's theory that it was a murder-suicide, Insider previously wrote.

Lukoil did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A former top manager of the Russian energy corporation Lukoil has died from suspected toad poisoning , reports say.

Following a session with a local shaman in Mytishchi, a city northeast of Russia ’s capital Moscow , Alexander Subbotin a Lukoil board member, allegedly died in a basement after an anti-hangover session with the healer.

Subbotin visited the shaman, Magua, and his wife at their home, the Telegram channel Mash claims, to treat a hangover using toad venom.

“They made an incision on the skin, dripped toad poison there – and after vomiting the patient allegedly got better,” the channel said.

Mash also claims that Subbotin knew the couple for a long time and had regularly used their services.

It notes: “And so he came to them once again – to treat a hangover. Suddenly he felt unwell – his heart ached. The owner decided not to call an ambulance, gave Corvalol and put the businessman to sleep in the basement. There the man died. the deceased were just friends.”

According to reports, the shaman told police that they were just friends with Subbotin - the brother of Valery Subbotin, ex-vice president of Lukoil.

The tale of Subbotin’s curious demise is one in a number of unusual deaths involving Russia’s energy sector, following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Recently, four current and former Gazprom official s – along with a further Russian energy official – died under mysterious circumstances over the course of several weeks, in the build-up to, and aftermath of, the Ukraine invasion.

In two cases, the executives’ wives and children, in Moscow and a Spanish resort town, were also discovered gruesomely hacked to death.

Vadim Vorobyov Becomes Lukoil's New Sales, Supplies Vice President

Russia's second-largest oil producer, Lukoil, appointed a new vice president for sales and supplies after state-owned rival Rosneft clinched several major deals at its expense, three sources told Reuters.

Valery Subbotin, Lukoil's vice president for oil sales and supplies, ended his 18-year tenure at the company during the week of Dec. 19 and has been replaced by Vadim Vorobyov, previously Lukoil's vice president for oil refining, gas processing and petrochemicals, according to the sources familiar with the matter.

Subbotin, who holds a 0.0152% stake in the company, will take a senior management position at Lukoil's trading arm Litasco, the sources said.

Lukoil's press office declined to comment and Subbotin did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Lukoil is Russia's largest private oil firm and second in production behind Rosneft. The two companies have repeatedly clashed over assets.

Rosneft, headed by Igor Sechin, an ally of President Vladimir Putin, has clinched several big deals in the last two months, including the purchase of a controlling stake in mid-sized oil company Bashneft and a stake in India's biggest refiner, Essar.

It also sold a 19.5% government stake in itself to Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and commodities trader Glencore for 10.5 billion euros.

One of the sources told Reuters that Subbotin's role change was a result of Lukoil losing the battle for the stake in Bashneft.

"Lukoil closely cooperated with Bashneft, [and it] really wanted to buy it, but Rosneft appeared to get in the way, and after the closing of the deal started to change the oil trading scheme," said a trader on the Russian oil market.

Since acquiring control of Bashneft, Rosneft has moved to cancel contracts between Bashneft and Lukoil and it stopped buying oil from Lukoil destined for Bashneft's refineries in the Republic of Bashkortostan.

Rosneft spokesman Mikhail Leontyev told TV station Dozhd ("Rain") on Oct. 12 that Rosneft had a raft of questions for Bashneft, including about its oil sales with Lukoil.

Rosneft told Reuters that any decisions about Bashneft assets would be made on economic grounds.

"The company currently has a contract in force. Its parameters may be changed--Rosneft, proceeding from its business plan, will set out the most efficient supply routes for these products," it said.

Market players said they are concerned that the change of a top manager in charge of oil supplies might result in Lukoil supplying less oil to the domestic market.

"Lukoil supplied large volumes of oil to the domestic market and now it is unclear if these supplies will decline or not. As of now those firms who worked with Lukoil under swap deals, haven't received anything for January," one trader said.

Lukoil used to supply between 700,000 tonnes and 800,000 tonnes of oil per month to the Russian domestic market.

Inside Lürssen’s 85m superyacht Valerie

BOAT International lifts the lid on board the 85m Lürssen superyacht Valerie, famously chartered by Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.

When she was delivered in 2011, the 85.1 metre Valerie was one the four largest yachts built that year. And yet in spite of her size, very little was known of the new Lürssen , formerly known as project Firebird, other than the name of her exterior designer, Espen Øino International , and interior designer, Reymond Langton International .

Now her owners have allowed the broker tasked with finding a buyer for the yacht they’ve enjoyed for nearly 10 years to share pictures of her amazing interior features.

“ Valerie has a timeless design and is in turn-key condition. Forward-thinking throughout the project, the build process and various refits means that even nine years after her launch she ticks all the boxes demanded by today’s owners,” says Dynamiq Sales & Charter ’s broker Maria Dobroserdova, who attributes the yacht’s remarkable appearance to a stable crew and regular upkeep.

The yacht has always been used privately, travelling mostly through the Mediterranean except for a season in the Caribbean in 2012.

Discretion and privacy are at the very heart of her flowing exterior design, which conceals her impressive volume, shields guest spaces from onlookers and hides all technical areas. “ Valerie is still considered by many one of the most beautiful boats we have done with Lürssen,” says Espen Øino.

Long overhangs provide shade and privacy as well as accentuate long lines. At night, 39 underwater lights combine with deck lighting to underscore the yacht’s curvaceous design.

Her volume of 2,755 gross tonnes is distributed among six decks culminating with a multifunctional sun deck topped by an enveloping structure that holds the mast and domes.

This structure creates a cocoon for a central bar. Just forward of the bar is a six metre pool and a Jacuzzi. It is one of five outstanding exterior spaces.

From up there, views are amazing. “You have a really low sill and all the railings are glass,” says Dietrich Kirchner, the project manager that handled the construction at Lürssen. She was among the first yachts built to use glass for railings and a trendsetter in this area.

As a bonus the sundeck is connected to the wellness area just one deck below via exterior stairs and a lift clad in leather. The panoramic gym equipped with Technogym equipment opens onto an outdoor space with room for dining and a fountain that lights up at night. Back inside is a cosy room for massage and beauty treatments. Rounding up the theme of wellness are the steam room and the Hamman, finished with mosaics in soothing natural colours.

“Details reveal themselves as you walk around the yacht,” says interior designer Pascale Reymond who compares the interior to a beautiful jewellery box.

The London-based designed firm drew inspiration in part from the iconic Claridge’s of London and incorporated Art Deco motifs throughout. Although, just like the style itself, the decor relies on strong contrast between light and dark, the overall feel is sunny.

“It’s not heavy art décor, we wanted to keep the interior airy and light,” she says, “We used a lot of light timber such as fiddle back sycamore and macassar ebony for contrast.” Among the stones used, crema marfil, travertine and antique brown granite, is a rare white onyx.

The main deck is designed for hosting. A deco-style hand-carved bas-relief finished in silver by DKT Artworks covers a TV screen in the formal dining room while doors on both sides are decorated with skyscrapers made from walnut, macassar ebony and honey sycamore wood and metal inlays. In the lounge, the centrepiece is a Schimmel Pegasus Piano designed by Luigi Colani, a stunning musical instrument with an ergonomic curved keyboard, hydraulically operated top and crystalline sound.

The upper deck is a palatial owner’s apartment with light-filled upper saloon that works as a lounge and cinema and several cabins. A panoramic bedroom enjoys a private deck with Jacuzzi and breakfast corner. Two more cabins are perfect for children and a nanny. This owner’s apartment is connected via a private staircase to a second master suite on the main deck.

With three more guest suites are on the main deck and two on the lower deck, Valerie has a total of nine cabins. In private mode the yacht accommodates 17 guests who are catered to by a crew of 27.

“The layout is very well balanced between owners and guests and crew circulation,” says Kirchner, who despite having worked on a series of complex projects at Lürssen since remembers Valerie well.

Technically speaking, Valerie was one of the first to be fitted with at rest stabilization, two Quantum fin stabilizers.

At the heart of the yacht, which was built to Lloyd’s LY2, is a two-level engine room. Two recently overhauled 2000kW MTU 16V4000 engines allow Valerie to reach a top speed of 17 knots. She cruises comfortably at 12 knots, a speed that gives her a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

For shore excursions, she carries two custom-built 10 metre Royal Denship tenders, one a limo, the other a landing craft. There is also the option to land a helicopter. The foredeck is a clean open space that has enough room for an Airbus H30 helicopter or similar to land.

From the time she was designed in 2007 to her delivery in 2011, it took four years to create Valerie , which is typical of a yacht of this magnitude. But there is no wait now. Valerie , for sale and charter exclusively via Dynamiq Sales & Charter , is ready for her next adventure immediately.

Newcomer Buys Russian Refinery as Socar Exits

A little-known Russian company, Rusinvest, has bought the 150,000 b/d Antipinsk refinery during a bankruptcy auction shortly after Azerbaijan's Socar pulled out of the troubled asset. Rusinvest, controlled by businessman Anatoly Yablonsky, agreed to pay 111 billion rubles ($1.5 billion) for the technologically advanced Antipinsk refinery in West Siberia. Antipinsk, Russia's largest independent refinery, was first hit in 2019 by the bankruptcy of its previous owner, the downstream-focused independent company New Stream Group. Since 2019, the refinery was managed by Socar Energoresurs, a Moscow-based company in which Socar had a stake until recently, and the refinery's many creditor, Russia's Sberbank. Socar recently said it had decided to end its participation in managing the refinery and to divest its stake in Socar Energoresurs, which had bought 80% in the refinery back in 2019. The Azeri company decided against participating in the bankruptcy auction because the move was not in line with its strategy (NC Apr.29'21). Socar Energoresurs was believed to be the main candidate for the asset, but was reportedly unable to agree on price issues with Sberbank. According to Russian business daily Kommersant, Yablonsky, who is a newcomer to Russia's oil and gas industry, is close to Valery Subbotin, a former vice president of Russia's Lukoil and majority owner of Socar Energoresurs. The new owner would definitely need assistance to turn around the debt-laden refinery, which is still estimated to have debts of more than 250 billion rubles, mainly to Sberbank. Apart from the refinery, Rusinvest also bought three oil fields -- Vorontsovskoye, Mogutovskoye and Gremyachevskoye -- with proven reserves of 45 million metric tons in Russia's Orenburg region. New Stream Group drilled the first well at the Gremyachevskoye field in 2017 and also carried out works at existing wells within the areas that were shut down by previous license-holders.
