Vard Marine is a leader in ferry designs in North America, with a portfolio ranging from a small open-deck harbour ferry to a fully-enclosed 470-vehicle vessel designed to carry a large tractor-trailer load and passenger vehicles.

We bring advanced technologies to our work – even if we have to invent them. In fact, we’ve pioneered the use of alternative fuels, battery technology and hybrid designs. Our hybrid propulsion systems coupled with noise reduction techniques place us at the forefront of efforts to reduce environmental impacts. Furthermore, our expertise in ice-capable vessels led to a dual-fuel ferry design for ice-infested waters.

BC Ferries Queen of the North design by Vard Marine sailing past an island and Seaspan Swift VARD 9 304 carrying cargo sailing towards mountains

We know it’s equally important to get things right on the inside. So whether you’re offering a first class dining experience or coffee and snacks, Vard Marine’s designs cover all the amenities appropriate to the level of service your passengers expect. Furthermore, as newer generations of vehicle traffic dictate design changes, we’ve adjusted to shifting passenger demographics with an increased focus on accessibility for all ages and levels of mobility.

We’ve designed vessels for the British Columbia Ferry Corporation , Seaspan Ferries, Société des Traversiers du Québec, Alaska Marine Highway Systems, and the State of Maine.

People needs? Technology challenges? First, show us your plan and then let Vard Marine find the answers.

Our ferry design philosophy

At Vard Marine, each design is the beginning of something new. We, therefore, partner with our clients to scope requirements based on their project’s unique set of tides, sea conditions, docking facilities, passengers and vehicle types.

In all our designs we call on our teams’ exceptional experience and expertise to deliver:

  • efficient hull form
  • low noise and vibration levels for passenger comfort
  • efficient loading/unloading arrangements for rapid turnaround, and
  • the ability to meet or exceed all safety requirements.

The client advantage

With our bespoke approach you’ll have a specialized vessel design tailored to your purpose – one that’s high on reliability, low on upkeep and unbeatable at maintaining service levels in all conditions.

How we work

Vard Marine works with both ferry companies and builders, providing a design-and-build package tailored to each client’s service requirements.

We offer a wide range of options to help our clients refine their requirements. Initially, we often start with feasibility studies and a cost/benefit analysis of each alternative. Next, we assess operating conditions along the route and research the terminal your vessel will connect with. Then, once requirements are finalized, the  design process begins.

Throughout the design phase we consult with the shipyard on the most cost-effective way to address the owner’s needs.

We don't stop there

From time to time, ferries carry dangerous goods. We coordinate risk analyses for Class Societies, conduct HAZID and HAZOP workshops, and work with stakeholders to define solutions.

33.20m Aluminum SWATH Crew Boat for Sale, Bareboat Charter, or Joint Venture

Amelia, Louisiana USA ID: 4353

This 120’ x 40’ Aluminum SWATH crew boat was built in 1999 for Trico Marine to quickly shuttle as many as 250 passengers to offshore platforms. She was built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group and designed by Petrobras. The goal was to create an offshore crew transport vessel that would phase out costly helicopter rides and rough voyages on conventional, mono-hull crew boats. The SWATH design provided a smooth ride and met the requirements of an average speed of 25 knots. The M/V Deacon is capable of speeds over 30 knots. The ergonomic requirements were defined to limit the incidence of seasickness to less than 5% in 4 hours exposure in the 2- to 3- meter seas so common to the Campos Basin where the vessel would operate. They also required comfortable seating, ample legroom and an HVAC system with a relatively high rate of exchange. The final design presented a number of challenges, while incorporating many high tech features, such as a gas turbine coupled to controlled pitch propellers via a 27:1 reduction gear and an active fin system. The vessel was built for $23 million. New construction cost to replace the vessel is estimated at over $30 million. While the M/V Deacon is currently powered with two Allison 501 KF turbines, she may be re-powered with conventional engines. A recently constructed model shows what the vessel’s outer decks would look like with conventional power. After five years of service in Brazil, the vessel was placed in freshwater storage for five years. During the five years of storage, the crew was on board and machinery was run regularly. The M/V Deacon was transferred to Seacraft Shipyard where she was dry-docked in June 2008 and the bottom of the vessel was repainted. Seacraft is in Amelia, Louisiana, USA. Can be reconfigured or re-powered to: Crew Boat, Passenger Ferry, Dinner Cruises, Whale Watching, Research Vessel, Casino, Military Yacht, Seismic Surveying, Live Aboard Dive Boat, Dive Support Vessel.

20 Mtr. Day Tourist Sightseeing and Charter Vessel

Melbourne, Australia ID: 3704

Reduced to AUD 650,000 excluding gst

Owners would like to highlight the flexibility of this unique vessel. She is a low draft vessel combined with a low air draft, making her exceptionally useful for river cruising where there are low bridges and shallow channels. In addition because of her beam she is an excellent sea boat and the Owners have used her in the open waters of Port Phillip Bay where beam seas would make the ride uncomfortable on many vessels. The vessel is not equipped with a fixed galley as this would take up space which is better used for passengers. When used for catered functions it is easy to set up temporary catering facilities. Owner feel that the flexibility that the vessel offers will make her a very useful addition to any tourist fleet. Potential buyers should note that due to her seakeeping capabilities she could be relocated to anywhere in Australia on her own bottom with a possibility that she could sail to New Zealand.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

catamaran passenger ferry manufacturers

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

catamaran passenger ferry manufacturers

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

All American Marine Launches new Ultra Low-Wake Ferry

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) has completed construction and launched the second of three low wake and high-speed passenger vessels for Kitsap Transit. The Reliance , an aluminum catamaran with a composite superstructure, was launched in Bellingham on March 6, 2019.  The vessel was designed by Teknicraft in Auckland, New Zealand and will operate on Kitsap’s current cross-sound ferry route between Bremerton and downtown Seattle.

The design of the new vessel was based upon the successful ultra-low-wake Rich Passage 1 (RP1) , built by All American Marine in 2011 .   AAM, the exclusive builder of Teknicraft Design hulls in North America, was tapped as the sole source to build this vessel.  Teknicraft’s patented hydrofoil-assisted hull design is proven to have industry leading low-wake wash energy signature that will not degrade the sensitive shorelines of Rich Passage.

In 2005, through a series of federally funded wake wash studies, it became evident that the wake signature of a Teknicraft standard hydrofoil-assisted catamaran produced the least amount of wake wash energy within its vessel class.  Kitsap Transit contracted with Pacific International Engineering of Edmonds, WA to spearhead the ongoing research efforts in conjunction with All American Marine and Teknicraft to further enhance and optimize the vessel’s design.  Teknicraft’s principal naval architect, Nic de Waal, worked with hydrodynamicists from the University of Iowa’s IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering Research Center as well as naval architects from INSEAN in Rome, Italy to model an ultra-low wake hull.  Coastal specialists from Golder Associates of Redmond, WA evaluated the proposed vessel’s performance in terms of wake generation and resistance.  The vessel optimization study utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to help refine the shape of the hull and hydrofoil to produce lower wake heights with less wake energy.  “Our hydrofoil supported hull has been developed and refined over the last decade to become a leader in catamaran technology,” states de Waal .  “With the additional benefit of sophisticated and intensive CFD modeling over recent periods, we now have one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly hulls in terms of the combination of low-wake, high speed, and low fuel consumption.” As a result of these studies, All American Marine constructed the Rich Passage 1 . This successful research vessel proved that high-speed passenger ferry service could safely operate through Rich Passage without causing detrimental shoreline erosion. RP1 was placed into ferry service by Kitsap Transit in July of 2017.

The successful launch of the Reliance will provide Kitsap Transit with a back-up vessel on the Bremerton-Seattle route. A third sister ship vessel Lady Swift is currently under construction at AAM and will launch in summer 2019. “Reliance is not your typical ferry, it was built to be very lightweight and to fly smoothly through the wake sensitive zone,” explains Matt Mullett, CEO for All American Marine.  “This vessel was strictly modeled on the proven hull design, but additional enhancements and modernizations were added without hampering performance.” The 77’ Reliance was designed to carry 118 passengers and travel at service speeds up to 36 knots.  AAM constructed the hulls with high tensile strength 5383 aluminum alloy.  The passenger cabin and deck were made from composites. The dynamic hydrofoil was molded in carbon fiber and automatically adjusts as the vessel transits Rich Passage.  Quad Hamilton 403 water jets and Caterpillar C-18 engines were fit to provide the high-powered propulsion system in compliance with EPA Tier III emission regulations.  AAM’s craftsmen also utilized lightweight aluminum honeycomb panel materials for finishing the interior spaces and applied high-performance bottom paint to help accomplish the speed and wake requirements.

This launch followed closely on the heels of February’s introduction of Kitsap Transit’s 149-passenger electric hybrid, Waterman . All American Marine’s new shipyard has provided an expanded capacity and production capabilities for both additional and larger vessels. The launch of this vessel further exemplifies All American’s position as the technological innovator in the North American marketplace.

Mobile Ferry

Welcome Aboard!

The Mobile Bay Ferry crosses beautiful Mobile Bay, Alabama and connects SR 193 at Dauphin Island on the west side with SR 180 at Mobile Point on the east. Considered “the Gulf-Coast’s Most Scenic Drive”, the ferry saves travelers hours of driving time plus the high cost of fuel by providing a travel link across the mouth of Mobile Bay.

The trip between Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan at Mobile Point provides wonderful views of the two historic forts that have long guarded the entrance of Mobile Bay. The trip takes approximately 40 minutes and is a great way for passengers to view birds, sea life and other boats and ships.

The ferry service utilizes two ferries, the  Fort Morgan  and the  Marissa Mae Nicole  to carry passengers and vehicles across the Bay. At least one ferry operates year-round with both ferries operating during the busy summer months.

Please note:  We will not run the 6:30 PM trip from Dauphin Island or the 7:15 PM trip from Fort Morgan except during Daylight Savings Time.
