It is with some mixed feelings that we have decided to sell “Caol Ila”. Listed here

“Hull no. 22 was originally built for H.R.H. Prince Ibrahim of Egypt who kept her in Cannes with two full time crew” Jeremy Lines Voluntary Archivist for Camper & Nicholsons

We have been owners/ custodians of the hull no 22 for just over 5 years and enjoyed many adventures on the West Coast of Scotland. During this period, we have undertaken annual maintenance and required improvements as necessary, including;

–      New Furlex headsail reefing system (2018) –      New sails: Furling Genoa (2018), Mizzen (2020), Fully Battened Main with slab reefing (2 Reefs), Stack Pack and Lazy Jacks (2021) –      Running rigging and blocks replaced (2018) –      New cockpit and sail covers (2019) –      New Sheet Winches: Lewmar 45 self-tailing (2019) –      New Raymarine Hummingbird Helix 7 chart plotter with Navionics charts for UK and Ireland (2020) –      All cabin berth cushions and seating reupholstered (2020) –      Anchor chain and anchor regalvanised (2020) –      Chain plates, deck stanchions removed, inspected, and reset, new guard rail wire fitted (2020) –      All Standing rigging replaced (2022) –      Engine cylinder head rebuilt, skimmed and valve timing adjusted (2022) –      Gearbox refurbished and bearings replaced (2022) –      Majority of Thru hull valves replaced with Trudesign (2023) –      Rewiring 12V – new battery isolators, circuit breakers, busbars, rewired and rerouted.  Battery Monitor fitted (2023) –      Rewiring 240V – new shore supply installation including circuit breaker, wiring and outlet sockets (2023)

Caol Ila R Wins Rolex Capri Sailing Week

Mills Design scored a 1,3 in the Racer Division as the Rolex Capri Sailing Week concluded in the closest of finishes. Alex Schaerer’s Mills Design Maxi72 Caol Ila R knocked Sir Peter Odgen’s Jethou off the top spot on the overall podium after she secured a second place in today’s race as Jethou came home fourth.

Schaerer explained that it took a while to realise they had come out on top: “It was tough because we needed one boat between us and Jethou in order to win. We were hopeful we could get the Maxi86 Vesper [Jim Swartz’s winner today under IRC] between us but that didn’t work by 12 seconds. So then we said ‘that’s fine – Jethou did a good job this week – they won.’”

It was only when the time of Roberto Lacorte’s Mills Vismara 62 SuperNikka was corrected out, that it was found she had slipped into third, beaten by Caol Ila R by just two seconds. After discards were applied, Caol Ila knocked Jethou into second by 0.75 points with SuperNikka (the half-way stage leader) third, just 0.5 further astern after five races. SiperNikka’s result was all the more surprising after being moved to the Racer division from the Racer/Cruiser Class she has dominated for the last four years.

Caol Ila with Francesco DeAngelis as tactician was also first to finish in the light airs of the traditional regatta opener, the 65th Regata dei Tre Golfi from Naples to Capri, for the second year running.

Review: Caol Ila 12 Year Old

Founded in 1846, the Caol Ila (pronounced “Cull Eela”) distillery is situated on the north eastern shores of Islay in Scotland. The distillery was re-built in 1974 to keep up with increased demand for blended whisky (most of the whisky produced at Caol Ila ends up in blends such as Johnnie Walker) and currently lays claim to being the biggest distillery on Islay. Ownership of the distillery has changed hands numerous times since it’s founding. Caol Ila is currently owned by Diageo, the parent company of Johnnie Walker and a multitude of single malt distilleries.

Though their core range consists of peated whiskies, Caol Ila is one of the few distilleries on Islay producing both peated and unpeated whisky and the distillery occasionally releases unpeated limited edition bottlings. Caol Ila 12 Year Old is their entry level peated single malt expression.

Caol Ila 12 Year Old Specifications:

• Spirit: Scotch.
• Classification: Single Malt.
• Region: Islay.
• Age: 12 Years Old.
• ABV: 43% (86 Proof).
• Cask Type: Matured in ex-bourbon casks.
• NCF (Non-Chill Filtered)? No.
• Natural Color? No.
• Price Paid: $49.99 for 750 mL (on sale).

Tasting Notes:

• Color: Corn.
• Nose: Smoky, sweet, briny, citrus (lemon), mesquite spices.
• Palate: Medium bodied, slightly oily mouthfeel. Smoky, sweet, briny, citrus (lemon), mesquite spices.
• Finish: Medium-long. Sweetness and brine fade. Smoke, citrus (lemon), and mesquite spices linger. Milk chocolate, toffee, oak (slightly bitter).

Caol Ila 12 Year Old doesn’t have much complexity, but it doesn’t need to be complex to be enjoyable. This makes for a great introduction to the Caol Ila distillery profile and it earns bonus points for being a consistent experience. The aromas detected on the nose carry on through the palate and all the way to the finish. If you’ve tried Caol Ila 12 and enjoyed it, I suggest seeking out independent bottlings from the distillery. I’ve had independent bottlings of Caol Ila from Gordon & MacPhail and Signatory and they’ve been exceptional, among the best whiskies I’ve ever tasted.

The bottle under review was purchased on sale for $49.99, but Caol Ila 12 is typically priced in the $60-$65 range. At full retail, Caol Ila 12 does not present a great value when compared to the competition. Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, and Talisker 10 can all be had at the same price (or less) and are better whiskies for the money. I’ll enjoy this bottle of Caol Ila 12 while it lasts, but I won’t be replacing it – instead, I’ll be seeking out more independent bottlings of the distillery.

Rating: B (83–86%).

A Second Opinion:

My cousin Jayson and I frequently participate in bottle splits and share samples of new releases. When possible, I’ll share his tasting notes alongside mine.

Jayson’s Notes:

• Color: Gold/Amber.
• Nose: Nice and complex. Sea salt, smoked meat, sweet citrus.
• Palate: Little oily, malty and waxy. Brine, smoke, faint sweet spices.
• Finish: Long. Peppermint, salt, some oak. Smoke lingers on and feels well balanced.

This is a classic, straight-up ex-bourbon matured Islay malt. Drinks higher than 43%, which is a plus, keeps the balance from nose to finish (another plus), but lacks the complexity that was promised by the nose. A little sweetness on the palate to play off the smoke would be welcome. I still recommend trying it.

Whisky Review: Caol Ila 12-Year-Old

Tasting Notes:

Caol Ila (“Cull Eela”) is a staple powerhouse of Islay scotch whisky. Now owned by Diageo, it is the largest producer on Islay in terms of quantity. The whisky that isn’t placed into Caol Ila single malt bottles goes into Johnnie Walker or other blends, because the beautiful balance of peat adds a wonderful complexity and mystery where needed. In fact, it’s importance in the blended Scotch world is indeed the reason for Caol Ila’s modern day success. However, the Caol Ila 12 being reviewed here, along with their 25-year and unpeated releases (that’s right, they have unpeated whisky too!), is the reason Caol Ila shines in the public eye.

Originally built in 1846, it is argued that this distillery has the best view on Islay as it overlooks the Sound of Islay from which it receives it’s namesake. It was rebuilt in the 1970’s as blended Scotch demand increased, with another equipment and production expansion in 2011. Located just feet from the salty ocean waters, four large pot stills operate at 50% capacity 24 hours a day [2]. This low fill allows for high copper contact and plenty of interaction time within the still. Larger, tall stills also help reduct phenol content . A tribute to style and taste, this method helps give Caol Ila it’s distinctive ‘balanced’ reputation, where big flavor is carried through with every smooth sip.

Of the single malts that Caol Ila produces, their 12-year is the most common in the United States. It is also a wonderful warm up to the bigger, more aggressive single malts found on the southern coast of Islay. It has won several awards , such as best 12-year-old single malt in 2014. Remember, this is still a big peated single malt from Islay, but it is a beautiful representation of the category and one that should be sampled by all whisky lovers.

Tasting Notes: Caol Ila 12

Vital Stats:  43% ABV, 100% malted barley, minimum 12 years old, $50-$70, 750mL

Appearance:  Creamy yellow, straw

Nose:  Peaty and fresh. Salty green vegetables or seaweed with a slight sweetness akin to honeydew melon. A hint of green nuts.

Palate:  Beautifully smooth, and challenging to comprehend the complexity. Flavor bomb that starts and ends with peat in a dancing way. Oily and uplifting, with a texture that reaches all parts of the palate without being overbearing, which gives it a perceived lightness. Phenolic citrus and a long, smoky finish. Once again, incredible balance.
