What to expect

Why not treat yourself with a relaxing boat trip which serves up the little luxuries that make being on holiday so special? Set sail from Side aboard a traditional gulet for this adults-only cruise for a day of sun, scenery and snoozing. What's more, there's an open bar stocked with local drinks as well as lunch and plenty of chances to cool off with a swim. Haluk, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Gulets were originally used for fishing and sponging around the Mediterranean. From the 1970s onwards, these wooden schooners became a popular way to ferry holidaymakers around the bays of the Aegean coast.'

Settle down to watch the coastline unfurl as you sail out of Side harbour – with the breeze in your hair, sparkling sea and a bar onboard, it's easy to unwind. We'll cruise along the Mediterranean coast and into the River Manavgat. Soak up every inch of Side's photogenic surroundings while your skipper sails and the crew look after you. With plenty of space and a guaranteed sunbed to top up your tan, you can relax on deck as we find the perfect place to drop anchor for a swim.

Between dips in the water and catching a few rays, why not enjoy a drink or two from the open bar – beer, wine, water and soft drinks are all included – or coffee and cookies served up by the crew? There's also a freshly prepared lunch with dessert, followed by more time for swimming, sunbathing or snoozing in the shade – on this gulet cruise, the choice is yours.

What is a Gulet?

A Gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing yacht that is designed explicitly for cruising along the beautiful Turkish coast. These vessels are known for their elegant design, spacious interiors, and comfortable accommodations. Gulets typically range in size from 15 to 40 meters and can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 20 passengers.

Gulets are built with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern amenities, offering a perfect blend of authenticity and comfort. Each Gulet is unique in terms of design and layout. Still, they generally feature cosy cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious deck for sunbathing and dining, and a fully equipped kitchen where the onboard chef prepares delicious meals.

The beauty of a gulet lies in its ability to provide an intimate and personalized cruising experience. Unlike larger cruise ships, gulets can access smaller and more secluded bays and coves, allowing passengers to explore hidden gems inaccessible to other vessels. With their friendly and experienced crew, gulets offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making you feel at home throughout your journey.

When you are on gulet cruise ; enjoy the chatter over fresh food, and even plan the day, such as it will be, with the captain. Another swim or paddle on the canoe, or start the next chapter of the book while lying on the sunbeds? The choice is difficult. But the crewman is teaching the kids to fish with a handline while the cook is preparing a very tasty lunch with salads, Turkish Mezes and a chicken dish.

Life on Board Swiming

After the sit down lunch and drinks has been served by the crew, there is great hilarity when some start to learn and to play backgammon. Then the gulet gets underway for its next mooring spot. As soon the anchor is dropped and motor turned off, all are in for a swim and splash, and fun on the watersports toys again. On the sunbeds on the front deck afternoon tea and fruit give a break to the activities or the leisurely reading.

‘After a lifetime of varied happy holidays, I’ve found my favourite’

I packed three generations of my family onto a Turkish sailing boat – and it was the best thing I did all year

Salamander Voyages, Turkey

My favourite holiday? Hands down, a week on a gulet cruising the Turquoise Coast – and that’s after a lifetime of varied happy holidays. If you are into flopping and floating, there is nothing more beguiling than doing so on one of the classic wooden yachts of the glorious south-western Turkish coast, which is peppered with empty bays, sand and pebble beaches, pretty waterfront towns and villages, and historical sights. With groups of friends, we have been on three gulet holidays in the past: relaxing and feasting on the chefs’ endless supply of Turkish dishes.

It has been 15 years since our last gulet trip with friends, however, and since then, like many our age, we have begun holidaying once more with our children – and their children. The oldest in our party of seven was 73, the youngest 16 months. “How about a nice, easy, all-inclusive family resort?” I thought when it came to the planning. “Surely that would be the simplest answer?”

And it nearly was, until I came across Salamander Voyages, which has a proven history of successful holidays with children aboard. I was convinced that a gulet holiday could work for us and made it my mission to persuade my son and daughter-in-law that a holiday afloat would be not just a cinch, but a thrill, too. Never mind that Olive, a city child through and through, is happiest in a playground or a shop, or that Max, a prop forward in nappies, destroys everything in his path. What could possibly go wrong?

Salamander Voyages, Turkey

Quite a lot, to begin with. On day one, Olive, aged three, tearfully announced that a boat was not her idea of a holiday and what she had really been hoping for was a funfair. A meltdown ensued. “Funfair, funfair, funfair,” she intoned, over and over, beating her fists.

I paled: seven days to go and very little chance of a playground, let alone a funfair. We had arrived at Bodrum on the first evening and were leaving the next morning for Knidos, on the Datça peninsula. Would the ruins of an ancient Greek theatre suffice instead, I wondered, clutching at straws?

On day two, Olive’s brother, Max, aged 16 months, also made his feelings known. While holding him, his father took an urgent work call on his mobile. Max was unimpressed. He grabbed the phone mid-conversation and hurled it into the Aegean.

What had I done? Who takes toddlers on a boating holiday? Would we be trapped for a week in a floating hell, with screaming children doing their best to launch themselves over the side? But then, thank God, a kind of magic happened. The luxuriousness, character and spaciousness of the 80ft-long, gleaming teak Salamander; the kindness of Captain Zecki and his crew – Firat, Timur and chef Ali – towards the children; the delicious Turkish food; the sun and the unbeatable scenery all played their part. The children quickly adapted, and one heavenly – and action-packed – day began to roll into another.

Fiona Duncan Turkish gulet cruise

Choosing the right gulet is a confusing and largely pot-luck business, and we were lucky to find Salamander. The boat was bought in 2003 by Peter and Jenny Cooke, whose children, and now grandchildren, have grown up holidaying on board. As a result, they are well versed in what is needed, providing safety netting round the railings, travel cots, high chairs and even a paddling pool on the deck.

With a Turkish partner based in Bodrum, the Cookes have expanded their private charter business to Greece, Croatia and Montenegro, with six luxurious gulets in their Turkish fleet, sleeping between eight and 22. Unusually for gulets, their prices are all-inclusive, from luxurious airport transfers to food (breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner) and drink, with no hidden extras.

Peter and Jenny, who live in the hills of County Antrim, fell for cruising the unspoilt Turkish coast on their first gulet holiday at the turn of the millennium. Having bought Salamander, with its six ensuite cabins and acres of deck for sunbathing, they began to charter it as well, but still spend weeks each year on board with family and friends.

Salamander Voyages, Turkey

Of course, a family holiday afloat – even a luxurious one like this – is not for everyone; parents have to have an adventurous spirit, for sure, and the whole party needs to be prepared to help with the kids. But it was amazing how quickly both Olive and Max became used to life in their new “house”, as Olive called it, and how at one with their surroundings they were.

And it is truly amazing how much entertainment one sailing boat, albeit a large one, can provide. The best time to go is shoulder season. We visited in late May/early June, and the bays were deserted. Salamander is packed with floating toys, and both children regularly went swimming to the beach in rubber rings or in canoes or on paddleboards with their parents.

There are also two Zest dinghies aboard. Captain Zecki gave my daughter-in-law, Flick, sailing lessons in one and the rest took turns in the other, with the exception of Max, but including Olive, who loved flying along with her father. “Do you still want a funfair?” I asked her. “No, this is better.” Firat kept watch from Salamander’s tender, an 8ft Rib with a 70hp engine that also served as a water-skiing boat.

Salamander Voyages, Turkey

Each night, we slept soundly in our comfortable cabins, even Olive, who is normally noted for her nocturnal activities.

Mornings began with a leisurely breakfast of yoghurt, cheeses, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, eggs, cereal and toast, plus bread for the fish around the boat, which Olive and Max were fascinated by. After a leisurely swim in clear blue waters, we would move on to a new bay and lunch (while Max slept) – perhaps stuffed peppers, salad and fruit. Then out would come the canoes, paddleboards, dinghies and water-skis.

Dinner, with the children asleep, was a more sophisticated affair than lunch. Movie night on her iPad was Olive’s treat for being such a good girl, which she was, before she settled down. Twice we moored at the quayside and ate dinner ashore, in quiet Bozburun and, on our last evening, in buzzing Bodrum, while the crew stayed on board with the sleeping children.

The gods of myth and legend who circulate in these parts looked down kindly on us during our memorable Turkish holiday. In a week full of happiness, the most magical moments came when the sails went up, the engine was switched off and the wind blew us gently to our next destination.

Fiona Duncan was a guest of Salamander Voyages ( salamandervoyages.com ). A seven-night private charter, sleeping up to 12, including food, drink, airport transfers, sailing lessons, use of equipment (canoes, dinghies, paddleboards, etc), costs from £16,950. EasyJet (0330 551 5151; easyjet.com ) flies from London Gatwick to Bodrum from £186pp return

Dalyan River Cruise Check Out Tour

Dalyan River Cruise Check Out Tour

If your return flight departs late in the evening, then this is a great way to make the most of your last day in Turkey. There's lots to look forward to, including a scenic Dalyan riverboat cruise, an anti-ageing mud bath and a riverside lunch. You'll also have some free time on Iztuzu beach, renowned for its turtle sanctuary. At the end of the day, you'll be able to freshen up and refuel before your flight in a nearby no-frills hotel. Ceren, one of our expert local guides, says, 'Nature rules at Iztuzu Beach, aka Turtle beach. A magical spot with a dramatic setting, new resorts were planned here in the 1980s, but these were scrapped and instead some areas of the 4km long beach are protected for nesting Loggerhead turtles.'Cruise down the River Dalyan on an eco-boat designed to minimise impact on wildlife, heading for the mud baths. Treat your skin with the anti-ageing clay and have a dip in the warm sulphur pool. After a tasty lunch of freshly prepared local specialities at a riverside restaurant, rejoin your river boat to sail past the rock-hewn Lycian Tombs dating to 400BC. Next, we'll set sail for Iztuzu beach, a haven of natural beauty. There's free time for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the unblemished surroundings. Finally, we'll head back to a local no-frills hotel for a chance to freshen up. You won't go hungry either, with a buffet dinner to tuck into. And what's more, you'll have the use of a hotel room right up until the transfer to the airport.

Dalyan Riverboat Tour with Lunch and Iztuzu Beach

Dalyan Riverboat Tour with Lunch and Iztuzu Beach

Surrounding yourself with natural beauty on a river cruise from Dalyan is a great way to unwind. One of Turkey's most pristine beaches is the destination, with stops at mud baths and a riverside restaurant en route. Ceren, one of our local guides, says, ‘Iztuzu Beach is also known as Turtle Beach because endangered loggerhead turtles nest here. It's a magical spot with very little human interference. The beach was all set to be developed with new resorts in the 1980s, but luckily conservation was prioritised.'Sail down the Dalyan River on an eco-friendly boat – which doesn't harm marine life – and have fun smoothing on the anti-ageing clay at the mud baths. It's great for glowing skin, and it's believed that Cleopatra visited for a pampering soak in the mineral-rich liquid mud. Finish with a dip in the warm sulphur pool before gliding across the river for a freshly prepared lunch of local dishes. You'll then add a little history and culture to the mix, as you continue on the riverboat past Lycian Rock Tombs – dating back to 400BC – carved into the cliffs. As the river widens into a lagoon, you'll have the chance to spot birdlife before docking at Iztuzu Beach. This 4km-long sweep of golden sand divides the river from the sea, a natural oasis that's a true haven for wildlife. Sheltered by mountains, the beach shelves gently into a calm bay, where an afternoon of pure relaxation beckons. Round off your day with the return relaxing river cruise to Dalyan.
