We must say that we’ve never had abetter yachting experience than the ten days my wife and I spent on theLegendary this August.

Yacht – we found her to be very stableand an easy ride even when the seas exceeded 5 feet on the crossing of the GulfStream. She is beautifully and newly re-decorated and equipped living upin every way to her luxury super-yacht status. In addition, she has severalfeatures which makes her unique and greatly enhanced our trip: (i) a foldingswim platform over15’ wide with steps into the water providing both a perfecton/off for swimming and a safe and easy access to the yacht’s tender –especially good as my wife had broken her arm a few weeks before the trip andwas in a sling; and (ii) a fun movie theater on the top deck which the crewmade into a gourmet dinner theater under clear and calm skies for us.

Crew – it is unusual to find a crew socompetent, and which works so well together. The Chef was superb turningout breakfast, lunch and dinner each day which would make a Five Starrestaurant proud. The steward was quick witho ur drink and even quicker inmaking sure our stateroom was always in shows condition. She also had areal talent for making the dinner table lookalikes it was set for royalty andto dress the table for special occasions. The Mates were always helpfuland kept the vessel in Bristol condition at all times.

In short, a first class time which Iwould rate A+, and we’ll look forward to another trip on the Legendary.

Best,

Patti & Mitch

#3

Good morningMadeline,

Iwanted to reach out to you and share my experience aboard the Legendary lastmonth. She asked us eachmorning what meals we would like to have on board and if there was something inparticular we were looking for. The stew was very knowledgeable withproper service and quick to ask if there was something she could provideall while giving us privacy and space to relax. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

The Yachting World hall of fame: 50 yachts that changed the way we sail

Helen Fretter

 • Helen Fretter
 • May 13, 2020

We asked historians, round the world race winners and legendary sailors to name the yachts that changed the sport for good. In no particular order, these are the 50 yachts that shifted how we sail...

Built: 1977 Design: Bill Lee

Weight saving is the holy grail of yacht design today, but it wasn’t until the late ’70s that the first Ultra Light Displacement designs, or ULDBs, were launched.

Among them was Bill Lee’s 67ft Merlin, at 12.5 tonnes and just 12ft wide. Merlin smashed the 1977 Transpac course record, setting a time which stood for 20 years.

Officials, concerned that ULDBs were not robust enough for ocean racing, changed the Transpac rule in an attempt to limit it to slower IOR designs.

Merlin was heavily modified, but still managed to win the ‘Barn Door’ trophy for the fastest crossing twice more. The record was finally broken by the sled Pyewacket , also designed by Lee, two decades on.

12-monitor-50-boats-that-changed-the-way-we-sail

12. Monitor

Built: 1955 Design: Gordon Baker

Legendary offshore sailor Loick Peyron nominates this futuristic design from the ’50s: “I think Gordon Baker’s Monitor is the one, which in the 1950s did a lot for the present and future of sailing.”

The 26ft Monitor is quite unlike anything else, made of glued mahogany with hollow, stainless steel hydrofoils which look more like windmill vanes than yacht foils – unsurprisingly, as that is what Baker Manufacturing had previously focused on. The early hydrofoiling yacht was reported to have a top speed of around 30 knots, using battened cotton sails.

13. Infiniti 46

Built: 2015 Design: Hugh Welbourn/Gordon Kay

The DSS-enabled Infiniti 46 is the first yacht to be designed around the twin retractable foil system (rather than have them retrofitted) to increase lift, reducing drag and heeling angle.

Since 2016 she’s been campaigned hard, winning class in the Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race.

14. Vestas Sail Rocket II

Built: 2011 Design: Malcolm Barnsley

For two decades speed sailing was dominated by the race to top the 50-knot barrier. Yellow Pages Endeavour got to 46.52 knots over 500m in 1993, then ten years later windsurfers and kitesurfers upped the ante, finally pushing over 50 knots in 2008.

Macquarie Innovation became the first sailing vessel to nudge over 50 knots in 2009. Then in 2014 Paul Larsen on Vestas SailRocket II knocked all previous attempts out of the park with an incredible 65.45 knots in Namibia. Nobody has even got remotely close since.

15. Maltese Falcon

Built: 2006 Design: Dykstra/Perini Navi

At the time the most grandiose yacht ever to be built, the 289ft Maltese Falcon was a technical triumph. Her three-masted ‘Dynarig’ system was created by Perini Navi at the behest of technology investor Tom Perkins , and is a modern day development of a 1960s concept created by Wilhelm Prølss.

Her gold and granite styling is not to everyone’s tastes, but the 2,400sq m sail area saw Maltese Falcon sail across the Atlantic in ten days. The systems proved so successful she was spotted sailing off her mooring in some venues – quite a feat for a 1,200-tonne vessel .

16. Speedboat

Built: 2008 Design: Juan Kouyoumdjian

Launched as Speedboat in 2008, this 100-footer was initially designed with the express intention of setting records, specifically the transatlantic record. Following on from Juan K’s successful Volvo 70 designs, she was exceptionally wide at the transom with a deep canting keel and water ballast, but record successes were few and far between.

Re-optimised for IRC as Rambler 100 she had some race victories before losing her keel and capsizing in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race , with five crew swept away from the boat.

17-pen-duick-iv-50-boats-that-changed-the-way-we-sail

All were rescued safely, but the incident intensified the focus on reliability in canting keel designs.

When owner George David commissioned the replacement Rambler 88 , his new yacht includes fibreoptic patches on the keel fin and load sensors on the pin, with data continuously fed to the navigation station

17. Pen Duick IV

Built: 1968 Design: André Allègre

“Built by Eric Tabarly, this was the first large ocean-racing multihull, which led the trend towards large multihulls in ocean races,” Robin Knox-Johnston nominates Pen Duick IV.

“For example, it encouraged us to ask Rod Macalpine Downie to design the 70-foot catamaran British Oxygen in 1973.”

Pen Duick IV took victory in the 1972 OSTAR with Alain Colas, who went on to sail her solo around the world – the first solo multihull circumnavigation.

18. Class 40

Built: 2005 Design: Various

The Class 40s have provided a first step into ocean racing for many skippers. Less than a year after the class was formed, 25 lined up for the 2006 Route du Rhum .

Pro navigator Campbell Field explains: “ It would be easy to nominate ‘Swiss Army knife’ foilers, or the super high tech IMOCAs. However, the Class 40s are complete in many ways. Affordable, bulletproof, ultra high performance, safe, and sexy [they can be sailed] one, two or four-up. They are simple, dynamic, rewarding, and guaranteed to thrill.

“A shortfall is their inshore capabilities, however what other class of yacht brings accessibility to top level ocean racing to a broad audience? They outstrip the performance of many much larger yachts offshore .”

19. Pierre 1er. 1989, Van Peteghem & Lauriot Prévost: Beautiful and radical, the golden Pierre 1er was the first ORMA 60 and won the 1990 Route du Rhum with Florence Arthaud. Vincent Lauriot Prévost recalls: “I think in ocean racing the first big change was to fly the hull with a trimaran as if with a catamaran.” Pierre 1er was swiftly followed by Primagaz, the first big tri to sail on one float. Photo: Jacques Vapillon.

19. Pierre 1er

Built: 1989 Design: Van Peteghem & Lauriot Prévost

Beautiful and radical, the golden Pierre 1er was the first ORMA 60 and won the 1990 Route du Rhum with Florence Arthaud.

Vincent Lauriot Prévost recalls: “I think in ocean racing the first big change was to fly the hull with a trimaran as if with a catamaran.” Pierre 1er was swiftly followed by Primagaz , the first big tri to sail on one float.

20. America

Built: 1851 Design: James Rich Steers & George Steers

The yacht which famously won around the Isle of Wight one August day some 169 years ago, America was also radical. Marc van Peteghem comments: “The schooner America brought something new. She was the first really wide beamed racing yacht to win against really narrow boats. It was a first really big step.”

The Lore of Legendary Yachts: Vessels That Made History

yacht named legendary

Everyone loves a good story, especially when it comes to yachts that have become legends in their own right. It’s not just about their size or the luxury they offer but also the adventures they’ve had and the innovations they’ve brought to sailing. Let’s dive into some stories of these iconic yachts that have left a mark in history.

Yachts That Made Waves Around The World

Hmy britannia.

This yacht was basically the British Royal Family’s floating home. Launched in 1953, it was where the Queen and her family would hang out when they wanted to travel in style. It wasn’t just for show, though. The Britannia was all about helping Britain look good abroad, hosting parties and official visits that helped strengthen bonds with other countries.

 • Did a Lot of Sailing : More than a million miles under its belt.
 • Now a Museum : If you’re ever in Edinburgh, Scotland, you can check it out.

The America

Ever heard of the America’s Cup? Well, it’s named after this yacht. Back in 1851, The America crushed it at a race around the Isle of Wight and brought the trophy home. This win wasn’t just a big deal because they won a race; it sparked an international interest in yacht racing that’s still going strong today.

 • Started a Tradition : The America’s Cup is still one of the biggest deals in yacht racing.
 • Innovation Inspiration : Made everyone want to build better, faster boats.

This yacht looks like it came from the future. Designed by Philippe Starck, it breaks the mold of traditional yacht design and offers some really high-tech features. It’s all about pushing the envelope and showing off what modern engineering and design can achieve.

 • Looks Cool : It’s hard to miss with its unique look.
 • Packed with Tech : From navigation systems to luxurious amenities, it’s got it all.

The Maltese Falcon

This one is a nod to the old-school sails but with a twist. It uses a modern sailing system that makes it super efficient and fast. It’s like taking the best of the past and turbocharging it with today’s technology.

 • Modern Sails : Uses a cool system called DynaRig.
 • Fast and Comfortable : It’s not just about speed; this yacht is also about sailing in style.

At Fly Yachts, we get why these legendary yachts are a big deal. They’re not just boats; they’re stories of innovation, adventure, and the good life. We bring that same passion to helping you find the perfect yacht. Let’s talk and find the one that’s right for you.

Washougal's Legendary Yachts adjusts to changing market for wooden boats

woodworkers is celebrating 20 years of building artful wooden yachts and pleasure boats that sell from $85,000 to $3 million, though changes in the market have

., down to just four employees.

"We just want to keep working," said Will Pollard, 44, vice president of Legendary Yachts, Inc. "We're very custom, very specialized. I'd be very happy if we were building one 60-footer."

At one point, Legendary had 22 busy employees, who turned all wooden boats large and small. Today, the four-person operation is refurbishing six seaworthy yachts, and looking for more.

yacht named legendary

Will Pollard poses by the hull of a wooden vessel being refitted in the warehouse at Legendary Yachts. The four-man team of builders is rebalancing and rebuilding the cast-off ship frame to ready it to sail on the Columbia again.

The company operates out of sight and generally out of mind in a nondescript warehouse in east Washougal, but it's got plenty of fans among avid boaters.

"Are you referring to the beautiful wooden sail boats that they have built there?" asked boat-owning Washougal booster Roger Daniels. "They have pretty much been a secret to local folks."

The boat business grew out of a dream by Stan Bishoprick III, who in 1977 founded Exterior Wood , a giant in the pressure-treated wood business.

From the profits, Bishoprick launched Legendary Yachts and Windy Ridge Farm, first raising thoroughbred racehorses and then registered Angus beef cattle. Bishoprick, who died last October, was also a professionally trained singer, served as cantor at several Jewish temples, was choir director at Vancouver's First Presbyterian Church and sang in the Portland opera and was president of the opera association.

Bishoprick launched the boat business after building his own 72-foot ketch, the Radiance, patterned after the famous 1935 sailing yacht Ticonderoga.

Bishoprick caught the boat-building bug in high school by helping his father build a 56-foot Marco Polo schooner. That schooner, the Corahleen, is being refurbished in the Legendary Yacht shop. (The schooner's name was taken from the elder Bishoprick's mother, Cora, and his three sisters, among them former U.S. Rep. Jolene Unsoeld. )

Bishoprick announced the formation of Legendary Yacht when he launched the Radiance in August 1994. His staff at both the lumber and boat companies included his son-in-law, Pollard, son of former Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard.

"Will and his brother Ed always loved to go fishing when they were kids," Royce Pollard said. "They took to the water like fish."

yacht named legendary

The yacht Radiance on launch day in August 1994.

The Radiance became the centerpiece of a two-year family adventure that began in fall 1995, when Bishoprick, Will Pollard and their families sailed over the Columbia Bar, down the West Coast, through the Panama Canal, up to Maine, across to Bermuda and Antigua and back.

"It was a fabulous trip," Will Pollard said. "It brought in tons of publicity of the company. It was once in a lifetime."

Curtis Sluyter, a Portland area contractor and boat builder, came across Legendary Yachts a few years ago while trying to refurbish the hull of his 27-foot-wooden yawl, the Vajra.

"Will has been so great to work with, and he is on top of his game," Sluyter said in an email.

Despite changes in the market, Legendary has found a niche by emphasizing wood. Company builders use South American and African mahogany, teak, western red cedar, western red cedar, Port Orford cedar and spruce.

They've built boats of many sizes, including the 58-foot ketch Bounty, the 64-foot Mistral and smaller boats such as the 12-foot Haven.

"Unfortunately, we are not building anything new right now," Pollard said. "In a perfect world, we are building brand new wooden boats – power or sail. But we are blessed with six boats that are wooden boat restorations or fiberglass refits."

Legendary's four workers stay busy with cabinets, paint, varnish and mechanical work.

"I am trying to keep all these talented people doing what they do best," Pollard said. "We'd love to be building another Radiance, and employing 17 or 18 people. We really want to be building new boats, and we've got a prospect, to build something beautiful to showcase our workmanship."
