How To Get From San Andres to Providencia | Flights + Ferry Options

How To Get From San Andres to Providencia | Flights + Ferry Options

Update November 2021 | Providencia was devastated by a Category 5 hurricane in November 2020, with many residents’ homes and businesses destroyed alongside infrastructure.

Much has not been rebuilt yet, and tourism remains uncertain.

If planning your trip, please seek out recent Colombian government advice to confirm the travel situation.

The only way to access the island of Providencia is via the island of San Andres via two options: the ferry or the flight.

After our own trip to both of Colombia's Caribbean islands, we wanted to share the key information and details on the two transport options - alongside tips to prepare for the journey - so that you can save yourself time and uncertainty.

It's worth noting right at the beginning however that, due to limited capacity and high season demand, both the ferries and flights can and do sell out. Therefore, once you know you potential travel dates for Providencia , it's worth booking your transport sooner rather than later.

This is everything you need to know about travelling from San Andres to Providencia (and back again!).

Travel from to San Andres from mainland Colombia

Flights to San Andres Airport (officially known as Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International - ADZ) depart daily from every major Colombian city, with prices typically ranging from 100,000 COP (£23 GBP / $30 USD) - 200,000 COP (£45 - $59) and a flight time under 2 hours. If you're flying from Bogota, add on an extra 20 minutes.

As you have to reach San Andres in order to get to Providencia, your first planning decision is really whether you want to spend more than a single night on the largest and busiest island of the San Andres Archipelago.

To work out whether you should do that or not, read 13 Things To Know Before You Visit San Andres .

How to Get From San Andres to Providencia

Flights from San Andres to Providencia

The quickest way between the two islands is to hop on a tiny plane, with a one-way flight taking only 15-20 minutes. There will usually be at least two daily flights to choose from - but this can increase to four or five per day in high season (December - February). However, availability is limited due to each plane only being able to carry around 20 passengers.

We unfortunately found this out when we decided to add Providencia to our itinerary only a week or so before our visit, and spent hours looking for flights only to discover that all seats were sold out for our limited February window. So, if you have a good idea of your travel dates in advance, it's best to get your flights booked sorted sooner rather than later!

There are two main options for booking your flight to Providencia in advance:

This government owned airline offers 2-4 daily flights from San Andres to Providencia depending on the season, with two standard daily flight times at 07.20 and 15.55.

Ticket prices are usually in the 280,000 - 310,400 COP range (£64 - £71 / $82 - $91) , but last minute bookings the night before may find a ticket for 250,000 CO (£57 / $73).

Flight times and availability are on Satena’s website , where you can also book and pay for tickets. Just note that, in our experience, the website crashes a lot.

If you do have issues booking online with Satena, you can find a travel agent office in Colombia to book them on your behalf.

Although their website looks like it hasn't been updated since 1995, San German tends to offer cheaper flights from San Andres to Providencia than Satena, with singles frequently at $250,000 COP and some returns for under 500,000 COP (£114 / $147) . Regular flight times are 10.00, and 15.30, but they do sometimes have an 08.00 flight in addition.

You can view flights times and availability on San German’s website - click on the 'Compra en linea' symbol if the page doesn't translate for you or you don't speak Spanish.

As their website interface is so dated, we were sceptical about whether it would actually be possible to buy tickets on it - but the website definitely tells us that it's possible! If you do it and it all works fine, please let us know so that we can let other travellers know! If not, then a travel agent on mainland Colombia or in San Andres is one option - or you could go straight to their office by San Andres Airport to book directly.

Searca + decameron.

In our desperate scurry to find a flight, we also came across Searca . However, whilst it seems that they actually operate several of the flights between San Andres and Providencia (including by the companies above) as well as offering charters, they aren't consumer facing.

Similarly, Decameron came up as an option in our research, but they only seem to offer charter flights as a package for their guests in San Andres and Providencia.

So, for finding and booking flights to Providencia, we recommend focussing only on Satena and San German.

What about luggage allowance on the plane?

As the planes have such limited capacity, passengers are understandably limited in how much they are allowed to bring. Small planes like have to be well balanced out, which is why you really do have to pay attention to this - we've actually been on a couple of flights like this in South America where each individual was put on the scales before boarding and we had to play an ongoing form of musical chairs during the flight to get an even weight balance distribution!

Check-in luggage is limited to 10 kgs. Excess luggage is charged 1,500 COP - 3,000 COP (less than a £1 and $1) per kilo extra, which is cheap. However, on a full flight with lots of luggage, it's best to expect that taking a lot of excess weight won't be allowed.

Therefore, if you have a lot more luggage and weight, we'd recommend just leaving some of it securely with your hostel or guesthouse in San Andres and only taking over what you need to Providencia for the beaches, diving, and the general island idyll.

As we mentioned, we didn't fly to or from San Andres due to everything being sold out, and so quite a bit of the above is based on reader's messaging us on Instagram to share their own experiences after seeing our Stories. If you have an update or anything important to include about the flight and luggage situation, let us know in the comments!

How To Get To San Andres Airport

San Andres Airport is a 10-20 minute taxi ride from most accommodation options in San Andres, and we paid $15,000 COP from our guesthouse. You can also walk to it quite easily from a number of hostels and hotels in San Andres , but only do this during the day. There is also public bus in San Andres which runs the ring-road around the island, but we don't know if it passes the airport.

For Providencia Airport, the best advice is to ask your hostel or guesthouse in advance to get an idea of expected fare to / from the airport - and whether they will arrange a pick-up.

How to Get To Providencia from San Andres

The Boat from San Andres to Providencia

As the flights were all booked up, we went to our plan B - the catamaran!

Owned and operated by Conocemos Navegando , it only has departures at 08.00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays during low season.

Due to these limited departures and fixed passenger numbers (approx. 60) - and the boat being a popular option for island residents - it is not unusual for routes to sell out. In high season however, there are usually additional ferry departures during the week.

Travel time to Providencia is 3.5 hours, but it's worth knowing in advance that the ferry is actually not much cheaper than the flights. An adult one-way ticket costs $215,000 COP (£49 / $63 ), with a return ticket priced at $395,000 (£90 / $116).

You can find and book tickets online on the Concemos Navegando website .

Although the ferry leaves San Andres at 08.00, passengers are required to be at Tonino's Marina / Port ( Google Maps ) and ready to check-in at 06.30 - so it's a really early start. Given the location of our accommodation, and that it was already light by 6 a.m., we just walked the 10-15 minutes to it.

Our main concern with the ferry from San Andres to Providencia was that we had read and heard some truly awful experiences about the crossing from other travellers. This sense of dread was only increased when we were each given a sea-sickness pill at the ferry check-in desk and advised to swallow it promptly - a practice that is actually standard for the crossing!

However, our fears subsided a little when we saw that the boat was pretty modern and the whole operation seemed quite slick - a stark contrast to a number of other boat crossings and journeys we've taken in Latin America (i.e. from Panama to Colombia and from Big Corn Island to Little Corn Island in Nicaragua). Perhaps due to those experiences, or because the weather conditions made for a relatively smooth crossing, or because we slept for most of the three-and-a-half hours, we really didn't have any issues part from a few bumpy bits.

Of course, that isn't to say that there will never ever be bad crossing to Providencia or sea-sick moments if you take the ferry, especially if you're a pussy. It's just to provide a bit of balance and personal perspective as the only accounts we read in advance were that this was going to be an absolutely traumatic experience!

Providencia Ferry Tips

Bring water with you.

Skip breakfast (personal preference, but if we think we might get seasick, we prefer empty stomachs)

As with night buses in Colombia, it seems that having the air con set to ARCTIC is the approach on the San Andres - Providencia ferry. Make sure you bring a hoody and trousers on board - seriously.

Keep all your valuables in your daypack and take that on board with you. Prior to boarding, they did try and take these off of us - due to their size - but a firm ‘no’ seemed to suffice.

Seats are not reserved, so if you need or want an aisle or window seat, try to board towards the beginning.

Wear the seatbelt.

If you do really struggle with seasickness, then take the plane.

What about luggage allowance on the ferry?

The San Andres to Providencia boat lets passengers take on quite a bit more weight than the plane, which is one potential advantage if you plan on staying on Providencia for more than just a few days.

Each passenger is allowed to take on one bag (158 cm maximum height + length + width) with a maximum weight of 18kg, and one small piece of hand luggage. In our experience, the luggage was not weighed. The check-in luggage was collected by men when boarding the boat and put into a covered compartment in the boat, and then unloaded at the other side.

Extra luggage or additional weight is charged extra, but we don't know the prices or process.

Return Travel from Providencia to San Andres

Despite Providencia being guaranteed to make you want to stay a few more days then initially planned, we recommend booking your return transport at the same time as your outward one.

To fly between Providencia to San Andres, Satena have an 08.20 and 16.55 daily flight, whilst San German have departures at 08.40, 10.45 and 16.15. As always, there may be additional flights will be added for high season.

The catamaran leaves Providencia at 14.30 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, with passengers required to be at the port office for 13.30 ( Google Maps ). The boat trip is only 2.5 hours on the way back.

One of the key considerations when traveling between these two paradisiacal destinations is figuring out the best mode of transportation. With options that include flights and ferries, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons to make an informed decision.

San Andres and Providencia are both stunning Caribbean islands located off the coast of Nicaragua. San Andres is the larger and more developed of the two, known for its pristine white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lively nightlife. On the other hand, Providencia offers a quieter and more secluded experience, with its untouched natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere.

Now, let’s explore the various options available to travel from San Andres to Providencia. Whether you prefer the convenience and speed of a flight or the adventure of a ferry ride, we’ll discuss everything you need to know to make the right choice for your journey.

San Andres and Providencia Overview:

San Andres and Providencia are two enchanting islands in the Caribbean Sea, each offering a unique experience for travelers seeking a tropical getaway.

San Andres, the larger of the two islands, is a vibrant destination with a bustling atmosphere. It boasts a mix of Colombian and Jamaican culture, resulting in a distinct blend of food, music, and traditions. The island is famous for its stunning beaches, such as Playa Spratt Bight and San Luis Beach, where visitors can bask in the sun and take in the breathtaking views of turquoise waters.

Aside from its natural beauty, San Andres offers a plethora of activities to keep visitors entertained. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore the colorful coral reefs surrounding the island, teeming with marine life. Water sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing are also popular among thrill-seekers. For those interested in history and culture, a visit to La Loma, the island’s oldest settlement, is a must.

On the other hand, Providencia is a quieter and more laid-back island, perfect for those seeking tranquility and seclusion. This hidden gem is known for its untouched natural landscapes, including the UNESCO-protected Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park. The park offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and getting up close to the island’s unique flora and fauna.

Providencia is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, such as Manzanillo and Southwest Bay Beach. Relaxing in a hammock in the shade of palm trees and enjoying the gentle ocean breeze is the ideal way to unwind on this charming island.

Both San Andres and Providencia provide a range of accommodation options, from luxurious resorts to cozy guesthouses. Each island has its own local cuisine, influenced by African, European, and Caribbean flavors. Whether you have a taste for fresh seafood, tropical fruits, or traditional Colombian dishes, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings on both islands.

Now that you have a glimpse of what San Andres and Providencia have to offer, let’s move on to exploring the transportation options available to travel between these two paradisiacal destinations.

Flight Options from San Andres to Providencia:

When it comes to traveling from San Andres to Providencia, flying is the most convenient and time-efficient option. There are several airlines that operate direct flights between the two islands, making it a hassle-free journey for travelers.

One of the main airlines that offers flights between San Andres and Providencia is Satena. They operate daily flights with a short duration of approximately 20 minutes, making it a quick and efficient way to reach your destination. The flights are typically small, accommodating around 20 passengers, which adds to the unique experience of flying in a small aircraft.

Another airline that provides flights between the two islands is Searca. They also offer daily flights, ensuring that travelers have flexibility in choosing the most convenient departure time.

It’s worth mentioning that flight schedules may vary depending on the season and demand, so it’s advisable to check the availability and book your tickets in advance to secure your preferred travel dates.

When booking your flight, it’s important to consider luggage restrictions, as some airlines have limitations on the weight and size of baggage. It’s recommended to inquire about these details beforehand to avoid any surprises on the day of your departure.

Overall, flying from San Andres to Providencia is a comfortable and efficient option for travelers who value convenience and want to maximize their time on the islands. The short flight duration allows you to reach your destination quickly, giving you more time to explore the natural wonders and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Providencia.

Ferry Options from San Andres to Providencia:

If you’re in the mood for a more adventurous and scenic journey, taking a ferry from San Andres to Providencia is an alternative option to consider. While it may take longer than flying, the ferry ride offers a unique experience and allows travelers to take in the beauty of the Caribbean Sea.

There are a few ferry companies that operate between San Andres and Providencia, and they offer different schedules and services. The most popular and well-known ferry service is called “Catamaran Miss Elizabeth”. This catamaran ferry operates several times a week, and the journey from San Andres to Providencia takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on weather conditions and sea currents. Be sure to check the ferry schedule in advance to plan your trip accordingly.

The ferry ride is a great option for travelers who enjoy being on the water and want to soak up the coastal views during their journey. The catamaran provides comfortable seating and amenities onboard, including refreshments and restrooms, ensuring a pleasant and enjoyable trip for passengers.

It’s important to note that the ferry schedule may vary, especially during the off-peak season, so it’s advisable to confirm the departure and arrival times closer to your travel dates. Additionally, as the ferry can be affected by weather conditions, it’s recommended to check the weather forecast before embarking on your trip.

While the ferry ride may take longer compared to flying, it offers a more relaxed and scenic way to reach Providencia. It’s an excellent option for travelers who want to take their time and appreciate the beauty of the Caribbean Sea, as well as those who may have a fear of flying.

Whether you choose to fly or take the ferry, both options provide an opportunity to explore and discover the wonders of Providencia, making it an unforgettable experience.

Comparison of Flights and Ferry:

When deciding on the best mode of transportation from San Andres to Providencia, it’s important to consider the factors that are most important to you: convenience, speed, comfort, and the overall travel experience. Here’s a comparison of flights and ferry to help you make the right choice:

  • Duration: Flights from San Andres to Providencia have a short duration of approximately 20 minutes, ensuring a quick and efficient journey. On the other hand, the ferry ride takes around 3 to 4 hours, providing a more leisurely and scenic experience.
  • Convenience: Flying is generally considered more convenient, as it allows for a faster and direct route between the islands. The flights operate daily, offering flexibility in choosing departure times that suit your schedule. The ferry, while slower, offers a unique and adventurous experience for those who enjoy being on the water.
  • Comfort: Flights on small aircraft between San Andres and Providencia may be a bit cramped, accommodating around 20 passengers. However, the short duration makes it bearable. The ferry, on the other hand, provides comfortable seating and onboard amenities, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the journey.
  • Schedule and Availability: Flights have a more reliable and frequent schedule, making it easier to plan your trip in advance. On the other hand, ferry schedules may vary, especially during the off-peak season, so it’s important to check the availability and adjust your travel plans accordingly.
  • Scenic Views: If you appreciate the beauty of the ocean and prefer a slower pace, the ferry offers picturesque views of the Caribbean Sea and the opportunity to take in the coastal scenery. The flight, while quick, may not provide as much opportunity to enjoy the scenic views.

Ultimately, the choice between flying and taking the ferry depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you value convenience and want to reach Providencia quickly, flying is the ideal option. On the other hand, if you’re seeking a more relaxed journey and want to enjoy the coastal views, the ferry provides a unique travel experience.

Consider the factors that are most important to you, such as time, comfort, and the overall travel experience, and make the decision that best suits your needs. Regardless of the mode of transportation you choose, both flights and ferry rides offer their own charms and will lead you to the tropical paradise of Providencia.

Conclusion:

Choosing the best mode of transportation from San Andres to Providencia depends on your preferences, priorities, and the experience you desire for your journey. Whether you opt for a quick flight or a leisurely ferry ride, both options have their advantages.

If convenience and speed are your top priorities, flying is the way to go. Flights from San Andres to Providencia are quick and efficient, taking just around 20 minutes. This allows you to maximize your time on both islands and explore the breathtaking beaches and vibrant culture as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed and scenic journey, the ferry provides a unique and adventurous experience. While it takes longer, the ferry ride allows you to soak in the stunning coastal views of the Caribbean Sea and enjoy the leisurely pace of the journey.

Ultimately, consider factors such as duration, convenience, comfort, schedule, and the desire to appreciate the scenic beauty when making your decision. Regardless of whether you choose to fly or take the ferry, both options will lead you to the enchanting paradise of Providencia.

No matter which option you choose, make sure to plan ahead, check schedules, and book your tickets in advance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. San Andres and Providencia are both incredible destinations in their own right, offering unique experiences that will leave you with lifelong memories.

So, pack your bags, prepare for adventure, and get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of San Andres and Providencia. Whether you take to the skies or embrace the waves, an unforgettable Caribbean escape awaits you.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in San Andrés

Welcome to Yachting.Rent, your trusted provider for yacht and catamaran rentals. As you plan your sailing adventure in San Andrés, you might be wondering whether to choose a traditional sailing boat or a catamaran. Each type of vessel offers unique benefits and the choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences, sailing skills, and the kind of experience you’re seeking.

A traditional sailing yacht offers a truly intimate connection with the sea. It’s designed for those who love the thrill of cutting through the waves, guided by the force of the wind. The classic sailing experience, with its characteristic lean as you sail, is something many seafarers relish. In San Andrés, where the winds are consistent and the waters inviting, a sailing yacht allows for exciting exploration and the exhilaration of mastering the elements.

On the other hand, a catamaran, with its twin hulls, offers unrivalled stability. This makes it a perfect choice for those who are new to sailing or prefer a smoother ride, especially when anchoring in the crystal-clear waters of San Andrés for a spot of snorkeling or sunbathing. The wide deck space and larger cabins offer more comfort and living space, making it ideal for family trips or group getaways.

San Andrés, with its turquoise Caribbean waters and constant breeze, is a wonderful location for both types of sailing experiences. Whether you’re keen on navigating the sea with a sailing yacht, or prefer the stability and comfort of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent provides top-quality vessels to ensure a memorable sailing experience.

Remember, the decision between a sailing boat or a catamaran isn’t just about performance, it’s also about the kind of memories you want to create. Whether you’re planning a high-seas adventure, a peaceful retreat, or a mix of both, we’re here to provide the perfect vessel for your journey in the stunning waters of San Andrés.

Parque Nacional Natural Old Providence McBean Lagoon

Never mind, I found the answer elsewhere.. it seems travel to Providencia is more of a challenge than back.

I|ve taken the catamaran more times then I can remember. Each time different depending on time of year, current change, before or after a storm. My advice is always take some Dramamine or something similar. Can be bought at local Pharmacy's.

How to Get to Providencia Island in Colombia

catamaran providencia san andres

Due to connectivity issues, getting to Providencia Island in Colombia used to be even harder than to getting to San Andres.

Nowadays you can get there pretty easily by using one of the two airlines that cover that route daily or the catamaran that sails every other day.

This is one of the top places to visit in Colombia .

Providencia Island in Colombia

How to Visit Providencia Island, Colombia

Getting to providencia island by plane from san andres.

Two airlines fly to Providencia from San Andres with daily flights usually in the early morning and in the afternoon (3PM). These tickets can be bought in most of the travel agencies located in San Andres or directly at the airline.

You can search for available flights on Expedia .

Flying with Satena Airlines

Out of the two airlines, Satena is the only one that’s bookable online, the website is all in Spanish, but if you have booked a flight with any other airline in the world, I’m sure you can figure it out as it follows standard usability practices up until the payment where the credit card’s expiration date is backwards.

Satena Airlines Schedule

This information it taken directly from the Satena’s intranet, this is subject to change, I recommend you check the schedules directly with the airline first before making any plans. In low season Satena offers two frequencies between the islands, in high season they increase these 2 frequencies by one or 2 more without any kind of previous notice. The plane takes 15 minutes to get there.

Flying with Searca Airlines

Searca Airlines is a charter company that has been hired by Decameron to transport people staying at the Decameron managed hotels, you can not book this airline online, you can however book it in any of the recognized travel agencies in San Andres.

Searca Airlines Schedule

This information it taken from the Searca intranet, this is subject to change, I recommend you check the schedules directly first before making any plans.

This airline still uses paper tickets, so if you are buying it over the phone/internet from another country or Colombian city, you’ll need to arrange a pick up of the actual ticket or ask the travel agency to mail it (not recommended). The horrible thing about paper tickets is that if you lose them, you are screwed, because Searca will not issue you a new one.

Getting to Providencia Island By Catamaran

The catamaran Sensation leaves every other day (MON, WED, FRI, SUN) from “la casa de la cultura” dock and comes back on the same day. On high season (easter and xmas) and on Carnival week (JUN) they sail daily and sometimes 2 times a day.

Departure time (San Andres-Providencia) is at 7 AM and the return is at 2 PM. At the time of this writing the round trip ticket costs $240.000 and takes 4 hours from San Andres to Providencia and 3 hours on the way back. They are not very efficient when it comes to making a booking with them. You can try to contact them directly via these emails:  [email protected]  or  [email protected] .

I recommend you are brief in your email, as I have gathered that briefs emails get the fastest replies.

I advise you follow this format:

Subject: New Reservation Paris Hilton x 02

Hi. We would like to make a reservation for:

  • Paris Hilton, American Passport number 516A273252
  • Posh Spice, English Passport number 05REA84681
  • San Andres – Providencia: Viernes 13 de JUN
  • Providencia San Andres: Miercoles 18 de JUN

We will pay on the day of departure in CASH/CREDIT CARD.

It generally takes them 3 to 4 days to answer emails, but sometimes they just don’t seem to answer at all.

What to Know About the Catamaran Trip to Providencia Island

The reviews are mixed on this trip, some people have a wonderful time, while some other curse the day they were born; If you are prone on getting sick I advice you take a Mareol pill about 1 hour before getting into the boat, this pill will save your from getting dizzy and probably puking, but it will make you very sleepy.

8 out of 10 people agree that getting from San Andres to Providencia is way harder than the way back!

The same people from the Catamaran have acquired a bigger, faster boat. I have done the trip on both boats and although the newer one is comfier and has better AC, I think the old one doesn’t swing as much. I advice you seat down in the middle back, that way you don’t feel the jumping up and down of the boat, no matter how much you want to visit Providencia, as a personal experience do not take this trip with a hangover, it will make you rethink if its worth living if you do.

If you are easily disgusted by the thought, sound or smell of puke, be prepared as for sure someone will barf on the trip, crew members will hand out plastic bags to everyone and tissues damped with alcohol in case the smell gets pretty bad. This is what I call the  Vomito Effect  where people just puke because they are disgusted at the puking scenes around them.

Why You Shouldn’t Consider a Day Trip to Providencia Island by Catamaran

The catamaran offers day trip return tickets from San Andres to Providencia this is an extremely pointless trip, as you’ll spend at least 4 hours on the boat, 1 hour vomiting and only get a few hours on the island if you are lucky before a 3 hour trip back, you’ll hardly see it anything properly.

DO NOT bother with this option, if you want to experience the real Providencia, keep your sanity intact and avoid suicidal thoughts, I highly advise you to stay at least a night while visiting the island.

Getting to Providencia Island By Cargo Boat

Cargo boats don’t have a fixed schedule and we don’t really know who to contact, but if you are staying in San Andres for a while and have the time to ask around, this might be worth a shot. The people who have done it told me they paid $40.000 COP per route.

From what I’ve heard is up to the captain of the boat to allow you to go with them, as it is technically illegal to transport people that are not crew members in these types of boats.

Your best bet is to go to the dock (5 minutes away from our hostel) and ask captains directly. Please be aware that to enter the dock for safety reasons you must be wearing pants and fully covered shoes, otherwise they won’t let you in and pass the main gate.

I'm sure you've had similar experiences I had whilst traveling. You're in a certain place and a fellow traveler, or a local, tip you off on a little-known beach, bar or accommodation. Great travel tips from other travelers or locals always add something special to our travels. That was the inspiration for Travel Dudes.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

catamaran providencia san andres

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
