Embark your crewed motor yacht in Club de Mar, Palma and discover Es Trenc, a pristine and isolated beach in the southern part of the largest Balearic Island. Unspoiled by hotels or resorts, Es Trenc offers over two kilometres of tropical-esque white sand, perfect for getting into the holiday spirit. There are some lovely cafés and restaurants along this stretch of paradise, or in the nearby town of Ses Covettes, but why not get your crew to prepare a delicious dinner on board whilst you revel in the view of Es Trenc at anchor.

Day 2: Es Trenc to Cabrera National Park

spain,streets,travel,explore

There are worse views to wake up to than the endless stretch of the flawless Es Trenc. After enjoying your first al fresco breakfast on your aft deck and a full morning of water sports, your crew will take you to Cabrera National Park. Cabrera is an uninhabited islet just south of Mallorca, untouched by modern tourism and one of the best-preserved landscapes of the Mediterranean. From your yacht, or if you choose to head ashore, you can spot wildlife not found anywhere else in the area. Dolphins, black lizards and a number of rare sea birds take advantage of Cabrera untarnished environment. Take a mooring ball and spend the night in tranquility.

Day 3: Cabrera National Park to Puerto Adriano

spain,streets,travel,explore

Having seen what nature has to offer, your third day in the Balearics is your day of luxury. The next destination is Puerto Adriano, a marina to the southwest of Palma, where exquisite restaurants, designer boutiques and various musical and cinematic events are located. You could start the day by making use of the water sports on offer aboard your yacht, such as exploring the shallow coastline with the snorkelling gear, kayaks and paddle boards. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, hop on a Seabob and watch the stunning scenery of Mallorca’s mountains whiz past. With 11 fine restaurants at Puerto Adriano, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to where to spend your evening after your day of retail therapy. If you prefer, relax on your yacht whilst the crew prepares a delectable meal for you and your guests!

Day 4: Puerto Adriano to Cala Xarraca Ibiza

mallorca to ibiza yacht

It’s Ibiza time! Your first stop on the island that never sleeps is Cala Xarraca, yet another piece of utopian coastline. Not only are there some rocky, jagged cliffs in the vicinity that provide some striking photo opportunities, but the still, transparent waters are another great spot for paddle boarding. A real highlight of Cala Xarraca is its natural mud bath, ideal for some mid-week relaxation. The rejuvenating bath soothes your skin and is said to have healing properties for your whole body and mind. After your stress-free afternoon at the mud baths, the Cala Xarraca restaurant - run by the same family for over thirty years - is a magnificently traditional option for an evening meal. Spend the evening at anchor and soak up the Ibiza vibe.

Day 5: Cala Xarraca to Cala Bonita and Es Porroig

mallorca to ibiza yacht

The cruise from Cala Xarraca to Es Porroig is a fantastic opportunity to take a go-pro, get back on the water skis and feel the refreshing breeze cool you off from the Mediterranean sun. Stop at the stunning Cala Bonita restaurant for a delightful lunch and dip in the pristine ocean. You will feel you have the whole bay to yourself! Arriving at Es Porrig, spend the late afternoon and evening at anchor, soaking up the summer rays onboard your luxury motor yacht.

Day 6: Es Porroig to Formentera

sunset,sea,ocean,holiday,travel

Having seen the most beautiful jewels of Mallorca and Ibiza’s coastline, spend the remainder of your charter exploring Formentera, the gem of the Balearics. An instant highlight in the north of the island is a shallow “sandbar” joining the tiny island of Espalmador to the rest of Formentera which can be paddled to when it appears at low tide. Just towards the south of this phenomenon lies Beso Beach, a beach bar that has a welcoming rustic appearance filled with laidback music and a typically Mediterranean vibe. The Spanish, Mediterranean and Basque flavours on offer here will welcome you to Formentera with a meal you won’t forget. Watch the sunset over Ibiza and spend the evening at anchor.

Day 7: Formentera

spain,streets,travel,explore

Spend the morning discovering the best beaches on offer before sampling some of the finest beach clubs in the Mediterranean. If you're looking for the Club 55 St Tropez of Ibiza, Juan y Andrea’s is your answer. The seafood is impeccable, with fantastic lobster and traditional paella dishes on offer, not to mention the best Spanish sangria and refreshing homemade cocktails. The view at Juan y Andrea’s matches the culinary delights as green countryside, white sandy beaches and brilliantly blue seas surround it. After lunch in this wonderful location, head back to your yacht for a final afternoon of watersports, sunbathing and a glass of something refreshing. Dine on board your yacht or at one of the many little restaurants in the Old Town before settling in for your final night.

Day 8: Disembark from Ibiza

We’re sure that by this point you’ve had the best holiday possible but unfortunately, it’s time to leave your wonderful yacht and crew. Disembark at Marina Ibiza and contact your Boatbookings broker to do it all over again on your next luxury yacht charter holiday!

Palma de Mallorca Cathedral - Balearic Islands of Spain

Cathedral Santa Maria

Join your yacht at Palma Club del Mar . Palma, the capital city of the island of Mallorca , has long been a yachting haven. Sitting on the Bay of Palma, the city is overlooked by the 13th century medieval Cathedral Santa Maria, a beautiful site at night when lit. Palma Old Town is right behind the cathedral, laid out in little streets at hint at the Moorish history.

Due to the great geographic position that Mallorca possesses at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea and the protection offered by the Bay of Palma, the area was fought over for centuries and from the 900’s to the early 1200’s, Palma was under Muslim rule, reflections of which can be seen in the city architecture today. Next to the Cathedral is the Palace de l’Almudaina, whose interior gardens, laid out in Moorish style, are a great location in the late afternoon for a cooling visit. Castell de Bellver Castle, started in the 1300’s, is open and contains the Palma Museum of History. Within a 16th century fort is the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Shopping is terrific in Palma with many chic boutiques and shops, and many – given the Spanish interest in leather – shoe shops. Overnight dockside. Enjoy nightlife in Old Town and along the harbor front.

Cabrera Island Balearic Islands Spain

Cabrera Island

Today enjoy a day trip to Cabrera Island . A National Park island in a small archipelago just off Cabrera, this island has a long history; however, was closed as a military location from WWI to the 1980’s. In 1981, the island and the entire Cabrera Archipelago were declared a National Park.

For bird watchers, visiting this National Park is a must. Due to being a National Park, with protected waters, expect to see dolphins, sea turtles and sometimes whales. To reduce any human impact only a one-day pass is allowed to visit the archipelago. Enjoy hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and visiting the small castle and lighthouse ashore. Return to Palma to overnight dockside at the Real Club Nautico, to enjoy Palma nightlife.

Les Salinas Mallorca Spain yacht charter

Les Salinas

Cruise to Les Salinas , the famous salt flats on Mallorca with great long sandy beaches. Stop for lunch. This area has a rich history and was long prized for the production of salt. Today the town of Ses Salinas is a sleepy area, beautiful in the juxtaposition of cliff against the long salt flats, which attract a wide variety of wildlife and birds. This is another bird watcher’s haven. The salt flats still produce around 15,000 tons of salt annually. Stop in for your own bag of Les Salinas sea salt and enjoy the vast expanse of unspoiled beaches. Have lunch on anchor.

Mid to late afternoon cruise to Alcudia for the night. Built on Alcudia Bay, this area is known for the vast expanses of beaches. Alcudia has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and today is surrounded by the Gothic built fortress walls. Walk on the top of the fortress walls, almost around the entire village, for a great view of both the surrounding area and the village itself. The city center of Alcudia within the surrounding walls is an area of walking streets and piazzas with shops, restaurants, and bars. This is the nightlife location of Alcudia. Overnight dockside.

Puerto de Soller Mallorca Spain

Puerto de Soller

Cruise to Soller for the night, stopping on the way at Bahia de Pollensa during the day, anchoring for lunch to enjoy the beaches and lovely water. This is a great location for swimming, and water toys. In the late afternoon head to Puerto de Soller to dock. The village of Soller is located a few miles inland of Puerto de Soller, and is connected to the Port by a small vintage train. Be sure to take the train to Soller, sitting in a valley surrounded by orange groves.

Soller was built on oranges, as a main business, and at every street corner and café, fresh squeezed orange juice is available. Of note, in town is a good modern art museum, Can Prunera, housed in an Art Nouveau mansion with works from artists such as Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Basquiat, Rusiñol, Magritte, Leger and Chillida. This is a large hiking and cycling area with many well marked trails, as this is an area to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors framed by orange groves. Return to the yacht for dinner, and perhaps a drink along the promenade at Port de Soller. The sleepy town of Soller may be better to visit during the day than for nightlife.

Sa Dragonera Island National park Balearic Spain

Anchorage on Sa Dragonera Island

Cruise to Andratx Port , a lovely little fishing village, with docks filled with yachts, with expensive villas lining the hillsides behind. Stop on the way to anchor for lunch at the little island of Sa Dragonera , now a National Park, with hiking trails, and great swimming, before heading into Andratx Port. This is a lovely little typical fishing village, and while the locals do fish, the quaintness of this little fishing village is enjoyed by many. Explore the little village, stopping at a harbor side café for, what else, fresh fish. After dinner, the harbor front is alive and a great place to watch the world go by.

Puerto Portals Mallorca Spain yacht charter

Puerto Portals

In the morning head to Puerto Portals , considered the glitter and glam port of southwestern Mallorca, where one never knows who one might see. This is a created marina centered village around 30 years old, filled with chic shops, bars and nightclubs. For daytime fun head to the beach at Cala Portals Nous, a small protected sandy cove. Stop for a drink at Roxy’s or Moods, and enjoy Designer Boutique Shopping. At night, the town comes alive with a very international chic jet set crowd.

Ibiza Town spain luxury yacht charter, luxury yacht, luxury charter

Cruise the 60 nautical miles to Ibiza Island to Ibiza Town Botafoch Marina home to the world famous Pacha Night Club. This marina is one of the centers of chic shopping. Just behind the harbor front is Ibiza Old Town, called Dalt Villa, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within live traditionally black clad Ibicencos, whose families have lived within these walls for decades if not centuries. This is an area to visit on foot, to explore the narrow winding walking streets, filled with little shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Also within Dalt Villa are great art galleries and several excellent museums; one of which houses an outstanding display of Roman artifacts found entirely on Ibiza. Another museum houses items from the Phoenician Age to the 1300’s found in 2002 in a room in the castle that was filled with dirt. In the 1300’s the castle was an important fortification for the islanders, and often after retreating to the castle interior, the locals would bury the room leading to the castle gate in dirt to deter entrance by their enemies. In the 1300’s this was done again, however the invading Knights from the mainland were victorious, overran the castle, and presumably the room filled with dirt was forgotten.

Ibiza Castle spain luxury yacht charter, luxury yacht, luxury charter

Ibiza Castle

In front of Dalt Villa around the port is the Old Fisherman’s Quarters, also with winding little streets best to explore on foot. Small boutiques can be found here that are often open until after midnight in the summer, along with stalls of the “Hippie Market” that open in the afternoons until proprietor feels like closing. And for anyone looking for another beach, there is a great beach across from Botafoch Marina. each

Hippie Market Ibiza Spain yacht charter

Hippie Market, Ibiza Town

At night Ibiza Town comes alive, and the streets are filled with activity from the chicly dressed visitors to locals dressed in outlandish outfits, including walking on stilts to lure the chic crowd into various bars and nightclubs, especially along Calle de la Virgins, (Street of the Virgins). Music is played in the streets, up until 1:00am, and after music can be found within any number of bars and night clubs. Well known night clubs include Pacha, Heart Ibiza and Veto.

Formentera Anchorage, Spain

Cruise to the nearby islet Formentera to dock at Marina Formentera. The smallest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Formentera is known for great beaches backed by sand dunes and pine trees with beautiful clear water. With 70% of the island protected against development, Formentera still sports the wildness and open areas of the Balearic Islands of yesteryear. In the 60’s Formentera became a haven of Bohemian lifestyle, which can still be seen in local style. Enjoy the beaches and water and visit the little villages and be sure to enjoy a cocktail at sundown at one of the beach bars with sand in your toes.

Between the pristine, tranquil island of Formentera and the international party hub of Ibiza, these gorgeous isles offer something for every mood, whether you want to swim, dive and relax on beautiful beaches, or party from dusk ‘til dawn, the Balearics are a yacht charter paradise.

Ciutadella, Menorca Distance: 40 nm*

Ciutadella, Menorca

Embark on your  Balearics luxury yacht charter  in Port Vendres, France and cruise to Ciudadela, Menorca.

Menorca, the ‘jewel of the Balearics’ has retained much of its virgin landscape and traditional Spanish heritage and is more suited to laid-back, nature-loving trips. Menorca is blessed with a stunningly beautiful coastline boasting more beaches than all the other  Balearic Islands  put together, and is consequently a veritable Eden for sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts. Menorca is most famous for its enticing coastal charms, but it is also home to several other diverse natural habitats. All of these ecosystems harbour rich collections of flora and fauna, including a number that are specific to the island.

In Ciutadella, peer into 19th-century buildings carved from magnificent rose-coloured sandstone. In the morning, visit the Pastisseria des Centre, which has sold flaky Balearic powdered sugar pastries called "ensaïmadas" since 1881. Try the homemade almond ice cream at Sa Gelateria de Menorca, and visit one of the ubiquitous sandal shops.

Mahon, Menorca Distance: 110 nm*

Mahon, Menorca

On this day you and your guests will be cruising to Mahon on the Eastern part of Menorca.

Mahon is the capital of the island, and no charter will be complete without visiting this idyllic hotspot. Wander the streets and admire the Art Nouveau architecture around the cathedral and the magnificent views of the coast. The enormous port has drawn visitors and traders in for centuries. As a result, Mahon feels more open to the world than Ciutadella.

Historically, Menorca is one of the richest islands in the Mediterranean and is often referred to as an ‘open-air museum’. It is permeated with archaic ruins, old fortresses and ancient churches, all of which mark various periods in the island’s tumultuous history.

Mahon, Menorca

Andraitx, Mallorca Distance: 20 nm*

Andraitx, Mallorca

From Mahon, you will cruise overnight towards Andraitx,  Mallorca .

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and is loved for its sublime weather and beautiful beaches, boasting more than 200 to choose from. While the dramatic coastline of the island presents a myriad of spots to relax and unwind, the mountains offer an altogether different holiday experience. There you will discover picturesque hilltop villages amid lush landscapes; villages such as Valldemossa, Deia and Soller are outstanding settings and have lots of character and charm.

The island is perfect for leisure activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, and sailing, as well as golfing, horseback riding and go-carting. When you arrive you will certainly be eager to try some of the island's traditional delicacies. Restaurant Can Pep is located right by the marina in Avenida Mateo Bosch and offers a luxurious dining experience. There are also many cafes where you can try the local blends before you visit the nearby fish markets. Take the time to barter with the local fishermen for the evening's supper.

Andraitx, Mallorca

Palma, Mallorca Distance: 75 nm*

Palma, Mallorca

On the fourth day of your luxury yacht charter , you and your guests will visit the capital of Mallorca, Palma.

Palma is Mallorca’s biggest city and is the cultural and historical capital of the Balearic Islands. Due to its wonderful array of buildings, bustling nightlife, and popular beach resorts, the town attracts a growing number of visitors every year. For a truly memorable day, we recommend that you begin by visiting Puerobeach or Anima beach club. With a lovely harbour, beautiful skyline, interesting museums and bustling street markets, the town is easy to tour on foot.

Palma has a very special ambience and the main sights are all grouped at the heart of the city. The great Gothic cathedral, La Seu, and l’Almudaina Palace stand opposite each other and are the main tourist attractions. Also nearby is Banys Arabs, the 10th-century Arab baths with huge columns, intricate architecture, and lovely gardens. After a day of exploring the tourist hot spots, be sure to reserve a table at Marc Fosh or Adrian Quetglas where you can end your day by indulging in style.

Formentera Island Distance: 10 nm*

Formentera Island

From Palma, take an evening cruise to the island of  Formentera .

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and is located just off the coast of Ibiza. It is often referred to as the ‘last paradise of the Mediterranean’ due to its lack of urban development and limited number of luxury resorts. We highly recommend Beso Beach or Juan and Andrea if you want to begin your adventure through Formentera in style.

Visitors to the island are attracted to its breathtaking natural beauty and laid back, easy-going atmosphere - a complete contrast to the crowds and commercialism of the neighbouring isles. Formentera is dominated by stunning beaches of pure white sand that lead down to the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Many beaches are deserted and it is possible to spend a whole day lazing about without ever laying eyes on another soul.

Formentera is an excellent dive location, partly because infrastructure development has been kept to a minimum to lower levels of pollution, but also because the island is blessed with exquisite reefs, aquatic life, clear waters and underwater caves.

Discover Ibiza Distance: 65 nm*

Discover Ibiza

On this day you will arrive at the famous party capital,  Ibiza .

Following yesterday's serene and relaxing time in Formentera, today you will begin your two-day adventure through Ibiza. The island's beautiful coastline is primarily what attracts most visitors, and with over 80 beaches to choose from it’s not difficult to find somewhere to anchor and catch some sun.

There is also a fabulous variety of beach clubs at your disposal; for a sumptuous and regal experience, we recommend that you visit Cotton or Tanit beach club. However, if you're looking for a more deluxe party scene, why not see what Nassau Beach Club has to offer. You can choose to dine on board your motor yacht , but if you want to sample the flavours of the island be sure to reserve a table at Aubergine or Sublimotion.

In these two days, you will be able to visit popular landmarks such as the old town, the underground caverns, or even Es Vedra, which you can reach via your yacht. But, also be sure to find the time for some well deserved R&R by taking part in some beachfront yoga classes or by visiting one of the many spas Ibiza has on offer.

Discover Ibiza

Dragonera Island Distance: 190 nm*

Dragonera Island

On your eighth day, you will breakfast onboard your superyacht as you cruise from Ibiza to Dragonera Island.

Dragonera was proclaimed a Natural Park on January 26, 1995. It became a model of the defence of nature in Majorca after 20 years of claims and fight against overdevelopment carried out by ecologist groups led by GOB.

Throughout history, there have been many flourishing settlements in Dragonera. Its resources and secluded location made it a prime anchorage for the Saracen Pirates, once upon a time. Perhaps there is still some treasure waiting for you to discover it.

The island is 2,88 hectares big and it is 3700 metres long with plenty of cosy beaches t unwind in. Vistors often hike up to the highest point, Far Vell hill (353 m), where they get awe-inspiring views of the nature reserve. On the west coast, there are spectacular cliffs that can be up to 300m high. The eastern part goes down smoothly towards coves and Cala Lledó port, where information on Sa Dragonera is displayed in the visitor's centre.

The island is full of wildlife and is home to some rare species of birds and lizards. Rest assured, it is completely safe to wander the heavily forested island and is certainly a worthwhile trip.

Disembark in Port Vendres

Today will be the final day of your luxury yacht charter adventure through the Balearic Islands.

The cruise to Port Vendres will take about half a day, so you will have plenty of time to reflect on the experiences you have had this past week. Be sure to spend a few hours in the morning playing on your yachts water toys before you make way to your final destination.

After a day of lounging about in the sun, you will arrive in Port Vendres where you will sadly bring an end to your time in this idyllic Mediterranea  spot. However, you will have the memories you have created to last a lifetime, or at least until your next charter vacation.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

Outstanding seafood, crystal clear waters, spectacular sunsets and breathtaking beaches, the Balearics have something for everyone. Relax as you cruise the stunning turquoise shoreline, where magic lies in every cove – you just have to know where to find it.

Welcome to Mallorca, you are in Puerto Portals, the most exclusive marina in Mallorca. With its relaxed but eclectic mix of restaurants, bars, cafes and boutique shops. After settling into the yacht with refreshments you can relax and enjoy the coastline as you sail to the anchorage at Cala Fornells. This is a stunning spot to anchor with wooded cliffs and crystal clear water. Your crew will prepare a buffet style lunch with delicious fresh produce whilst you soak up your beautiful surroundings. Next, take a short sail into the stunning bay of Port Andraitx, a lively port with an array of fabulous waterfront restaurants with wonderful views out over the harbour.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

Enjoy an early breakfast onboard before setting sail for Ibiza, leaving one set of breathtaking scenery for another. En route you are likely to encounter marine life including dolphins and in exceptional circumstances whales. Lunch will be served on-board and you should arrive in Puerto de San Miguel late afternoon, anchoring in the picturesque bay. Your crew will take you ashore on the Jet Rib tender where two of the best recognised restaurants on Ibiza can be found.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

A leisurely day awaits whereby after breakfast on-board you will have a short sail to the anchorage at Cala Portixol, a hidden gem only accessible by boat or on foot.

Here you will find a tiny fishing community with traditional huts and craft. You will have the opportunity to explore ashore, snorkel in the turquoise waters, go paddle boarding and kayaking. After lunch it will be onwards to the infamous port of San Antonio where you will overnight in a marina and the associated facilities.

San Antonio is the second largest town in Ibiza.Highly recommended is a visit to ‘Sunset Strip’ where you can watch a spectacular sunset from a choice of cocktail bars and cafes. A huge variety of restaurants line the seafront here, so plenty for you to ponder.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

Enjoy breakfast on-board before setting sail for another gem of a bay at Port Roig on your way to the island’s capital Ibiza Town. Port Roig is a wonderful place to sunbathe and make full use of the on-board toys. A perfect setting or another relaxing day before sailing onwards to one of the most spectacular cities in the Mediterranean. Ibiza Town more than lives up to its reputation with panoramic views from its battlement, a treasure trove of history, mystery and discoveries, spanning 25 years are encapsulated in this UNESCO World Heritage site. It has white-washed houses and streets, labyrinth style in the Old Town (D’Alt Vila) and an amazing selection of restaurants and bars. You will overnight here in one of the many marinas close to the town.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

The anticipation of going to the ‘Caribbean’ of the Mediterranean – Formentera, should spur you on to get underway straight after breakfast. As you approach this island the glare off the sun-bleached beaches is striking as is the light turquoise sea. You will anchor off one of the many gorgeous beached at Playa Espalmador. Fabulous beach bars are sprinkled along this beach offering choices where you can eat excellent food while wriggling your toes into the sand, complete paradise. Your crew can run you ashore on the Jet Rib and collect you when you are ready to come back on-board. You will then overnight in the quaint harbour at La Sabina on Formentera, just a short 15 minutes from the beach anchorage. La Sabina offers a variety of restaurants and bars as well as an alternative array of ‘pop up’ clothing and jewellery shops that run the full length of the back of the harbour.

Mallorca – Ibiza – Formentera

After breakfast, on-board it would be a mid-morning departure to make time for a stop off with the option of a swim off the beach at Espalmador. Then it’s the sail back to the home port of Puerto Portals in Mallorca. Lunch will be served on-route with an anticipated arrival back on the home berth in the early evening. This is to ensure there is plenty of time to spend your last evening enjoying the full use of this prestigious nautical and leisure complex that this marina has to offer.

Ibiza vs Mallorca: here's how to choose between two beautiful Balearic islands

Alexis Averbuck

Playa Salada on Ibiza; Mallorca's historic tram in Soller

Planning a trip to Spain's Balearic Islands, but can't decide between Mallorca and Ibiza? We can help © iStock

Which of  Spain 's popular holiday escapes is right for you?

It's not an easy choice: both islands are lapped by the clear waters of the Mediterranean and have gorgeous coastlines packed with white-sand beaches and tiny coves; both islands have captivating UNESCO sites to explore and strong food scenes with dishes just begging to be sampled.

To help you narrow down your options, we asked two travel writers to go head-to-head, giving the case for the destination closest to their hearts.

A sole figure sits on a clifftop looking out as the sun sets over the sea

Ibiza is so much more than sunsets and nightlife

Isabella Noble is a Barcelona- and Málaga-based travel journalist who has been drawn to Ibiza for years and often writes about the beautiful White Isle (beyond the parties).

Picture this: a fiery tangerine-pink sky sprawls above the outline of a few jagged islets, as the sun slowly drops into the shimmering Mediterranean. Welcome to magical, mesmerizing Ibiza, a naturally spectacular island that is about so much more than its world-renowned party scene – and where a soulful sunset is always on call.

Mallorca might be by far the largest of the Balearic Islands, but smaller Ibiza packs in a world of fun. It’s an island loved by global celebrities and style icons for years, but it’s also a place for wandering around barefoot with salty sea-fresh hair, and where a flowy outfit with espardenyes (espadrilles) is a signature look. Ibiza basically invented boho-chic fashion, as you’ll see from its famous hippie markets and beach-cool boutiques.

While Mallorca has pretty Palma, Ibiza’s entrancing capital Eivissa (or Ibiza Town) is both an edgy, carefree beauty and an archaeological marvel founded by the Phoenicians back in the 7th century BCE. Encircled by spectacular 16th-century ramparts, it’s one of Spain’s oldest cities, now crammed with stylish shops, lively restaurants and curious galleries. Don’t miss the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa , an ingeniously revamped 18th-century building that always has something wonderful on.

Speaking of restaurants, Ibiza’s food scene easily rivals Spain’s other culinary capitals; it just doesn’t shout about it. Here everything revolves around fresh Ibizan produce, much of it grown organically at fincas  (rural estates) across the island. As a lifelong vegetarian, this local-rooted food culture is a dream, whether I’m having breakfast in the gorgeous gardens at Sant Joan’s Giri Cafe , devouring plant-based treats at Wild Beets in Santa Gertrudis or enjoying a leisurely lunch at a long-running local haunt like Ibiza Town’s Ca n’Alfredo . Mallorca isn’t the only grape-growing Balearic either – Ibiza’s divine wines are a treat too, mostly produced by small-scale family vineyards devoted to hyper-local grapes.

Green rolling hills dotted with white low-rise buildings

Then there are those deservedly world-famous beaches , in every shape and style under the Mediterranean sun. Fancy escaping to a crowd-free cliff-framed cala (cove)? Hike out to remote Es Portitxol or Cala d’Aubarca on the north coast. A sugar-white strand with a touch of partying? Head to pine-fringed Platja de Ses Salines , one of loveliest beaches in the entire country. Sunset drumming and bohemian beachy vibes? You want beautiful Benirràs . Somewhere for a glorious seafood lunch after a swim? Go for south-coast Cala d’Hort or Sa Caleta . Even on Ibiza’s most popular sands, you can still sidestep most of the crowds simply by visiting outside July and August.

The entire southeast corner of the island is a UNESCO-protected nature reserve, the Parc Natural de Ses Salines , which ripples around centuries-old salt flats (just another relic from Ibiza’s Phoenician past). Over on the party-loving west coast, it’s those sunsets that steal the show, especially around the beloved and enigmatic islet of Es Vedrà , still wrapped in mystery. And there are endless ways to soak up Ibiza’s serene landscapes, from paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking and cycling to yoga at some of Europe’s top retreats.

Heading inland, meanwhile, reveals a world of sun-drenched olive groves, whitewashed villages and ancient churches built like mini fortresses, especially across enchanting (and less-touristed) north Ibiza. I love staying at the many old farmhouses reborn as peaceful agroturismes here, whether that means a glamorous five-star retreat like Can Lluc or a more low-key bolthole like Can Fuster , a 150-year-old farmhouse in Sant Joan.

There’s also the allure of dreamy, barefoot-vibe Formentera , just a quick ferry ride away over the water and perfectly daytrippable from Ibiza. But I’d need a whole separate article for that.

So by all means come for the clubs, the parties and the dancing ( Pacha is an icon of European nightlife that everyone should experience), but for me Ibiza’s magic is all about its slower side. Just pack a bocadillo (sandwich) and a swimsuit and hike out to a hidden cove – you’ll inevitably be blown away. There really is nowhere quite like it.

Mallorca has a beauty that's hard to believe

Alexis Averbuck has explored and lived on islands the world over. She has the enviable job of  researching Mallorca for the upcoming Lonely Planet guide.

For a relatively compact island, Mallorca is crammed with wonderful landscapes and plenty of varied things to do. Love wide open spaces and want unparalleled scenery? Head to the Tramuntana Mountains, so majestic and wonderful they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow roads zigzag tip-to-tail with jaw-dropping sea views and hidden wonders like the mountaintop Santuari de Lluc , steeped in history as a pilgrimage site, and now both a spiritual center and hiking nirvana. Trek to teeny hermitages and pinnacle towers on well-marked mountain trails.

Or drop down into any of its gorgeous hamlets, from Banyalbufar , surrounded by Moorish terraces scoring its hills, to magnetic Valldemossa with its Carthusian monastery , once home to composer Frédéric Chopin and novelist George Sand. Ravishing Deià calls folks from far and wide, astride the hills alongside bustling Sollér , with its compelling central square and church , where you can take a steam train (from a station adorned with Picassos and Mirós ) through the mountains to Palma, like the high-livers of yore.

Which leads me to Palma , a city that's so beautiful it's hard to believe it's real. Wrapped in honey-colored medieval walls and crowned by its awesome  cathedral  with flying buttresses, gargoyles, the world’s largest rose window and Gaudí adornments, the city sits right alongside the giant, glittering blue sea. Step aside CGI, this is real-life Palma de Mallorca! And in among its grand castle-homes with ornate patios and courtyards throng banging cafes, bars and restaurants to suit any taste.

Oh, and let’s not forget Mallorca’s connection to the arts – with its superb modern art museums ( Es Baluard and Museu Fundació Joan March ) and cutting-edge galleries both in the old town and out. Any lover of human inspiration should visit the studios of Joan Miró where you can see this creative genius’s ateliers as he left them, drawings etched into the walls, paintbrushes in cans. Let his last work in progress – as well as displays of his masterpieces – lift you up, all with a sea view (he was no fool).

A hiker pauses on a trail to look out over the hilly landscape stretching out in front of her

Wait, but with all this, I haven't even mentioned the coastline… there are beaches, beaches and more beaches. From long white-sand spurs like Es Trenc to remote, protected bays like those in Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant – try calas Mitjana, Torta and Matzoc – or stunning, remote Cala Tuent . You can hike or boat to beaches inaccessible by car, so that even in high season you can discover a spit of sand or rock to call your own. And the waters are crystalline, aqua, cobalt – these are just some of the words you can use to describe them. There's a range of water sports, including kite-surfing, kayaking and boating, or head inland to rock climb, hike and bike. There’s a reason the world’s best cyclists train here: if you’re going to spend eight hours on a bike, let’s make them ravishing hours.

Mallorquín cuisine is a symphony of fresh produce and hearty cooking done with subtle flair. This is a productive island, growing all manner of its own food, from spring-flowering almonds and citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit) to wheat and pork, plus fresh-caught seafood. It’s a veritable cornucopia! Enter the fray by shopping at myriad local markets, like the excellent Sineu market on Wednesday mornings – a tradition since 1306 – and Mercat de l'Olivar in Palma, or eat at a Mallorquín restaurant like Valldemossa’s Hostal Can Marió and its neighbor Es Taller . For those wanting to really splash out, there are Michelin-starred art-shows of local gastronomy at  Adrian Quetglas , DINS Santi Taura  and  Marc Fosh .

Don't miss the olive groves and mills where you can taste olive oil straight from the source. For wine, start with the rich DO Binissalem wines. Better yet, follow a wine tasting route through the rolling countryside between stone hamlets and in vineyards like Tianna Negre or La Finca Biniagual .

Lest you imagine Mallorca is pure sensual joy, also remember its extensive, fascinating history. Explore Bronze Age talayotic ruins like Es Turassot and Santuario de Son Corró around the Sencelles region, a sleepy and beautiful batch of hamlets in the interior. These ancient ruins are actually dotted across the whole island – I love the extensive Talaiots de Son Fornés and Ses Païsses . Get Roman at the Balearics’ most important site: Pollentia . The Banys Àrabs is a walk into the 11th-century Moorish era, or jump to the 14th century at the Castell de Bellver and the Palau Reial de l’Almudaina . Plus, there’s the incredible array of churches to explore – so many religious orders built here and seemed to spare no expense.

One final and very significant note: Mallorca has such a rich local life and large resident population, that it is active and inviting year-round, so you can easily come at a time outside of high season to avoid the crowds. Ibiza, on the other hand, is so reliant on summer tourism that vast swathes of its businesses simply close from late fall to spring and the old port becomes a ghost town. I’d choose the countless pleasures of Mallorca any day.
