Its first design success was the AZ 43’ Bali, a mass-produced fiberglass boat designed in collaboration with Amerglass. The company gradually expanded its range at both ends of the market, with the AZ 32’Targa in 1977 (the ‘Ford T’ of the boating world) and the Azimut 105’ Failaka in 1982, the biggest mass-produced fiberglass yacht of its time.

In 1985 Azimut Yachts acquired Benetti Yachts, the oldest luxury shipbuilder in the world. With the Azimut-Benetti Group now in place, Azimut was able to construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionize the boat building industry, such as large frameless windows and walnut interiors.

Azimut Yachts

Azimut Yachts, part of Italy’s Azimut-Benetti Group, is a leading builder of luxury yachts from 11.8 metres to more than 36 metres in length. Azimut-Benetti Group is the largest yacht manufacturer by number of units and length of yachts under construction listed in the Boat International Global Order Book, a position it has enjoyed for a number of years.

History of Azimut Yachts

Azimut Srl got its start in 1969 when Paolo Vitelli, as a college student, opened a sailing yacht chartering business in Turin and was soon asked to be an Italian distributor for several boat manufacturers. During the 1970s, Vitelli gradually moved the company into boat building, beginning with a joint venture with Ameriglass to offer the AZ 43’ Bali, a 13-metre, mass-produced fibreglass recreational boat that quickly gained popularity. The launch of a 32’ Targa in 1977  and a 105-footer in 1982 secured Azimut’s place as an international manufacturer of production yachts.

Over the years, Azimut has maintained market leadership through design innovation and diversification. A striking example of its design DNA is Azimut’s use of large, frameless hull windows to connect guests aboard its yachts to the sea outside. Its yacht model series feature progressive, contemporary styling and aggressive performance. Azimut motor yachts also are known for their modern, high-tech interiors.

In 2013, sister yacht and entry level brand Atlantis was merged into Azimut Yachts, putting five luxury yacht series together under the Azimut marque: Flybridge, S, Magellano, Atlantis, and the Azimut Grande superyacht collection, with Verve being added in 2016.

In 2019, Vitelli, now chairman of the Azimut-Benetti Group Board of Directors,  marked Azimut’s 50th Anniversary with celebrations in Dubai, New York, Cap d’Antibes and Avigliana, including a presentation at a Sustainability Talks held at the NASDAC Impact Summit in New York and the display of an Azimut S6 in Times Square during the city’s Design Connections Week. In 2019, Azimut reported 50% of its sales in the Americas, 29 % in Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounting for 14%, and Asia Pacific with 7%.

In 2020, Marco Valle, who has held various positions with Azimut-Benetti since 1996, including CEO of Azimut since 2016, was promoted to Group CEO, overseeing both brands. In total, the Group builds yachts from 12 to more than 100 metres LOA. He is charged with keeping the identity of each brand intact and distinct while fully respecting the signature characteristics of each shipyard.

Notable Yachts and Award Winners

Azimut presented is Magellano 25 Metri to worldwide debut at a special showing in Viareggio during September 2020. The chic, timeless and sporty exterior lines by Ken Freivokh are complemented by interiors by architect and designer Vincenzo De Cotiis making his debut yacht design. The yacht, which combines unprecedented style and design choices with the widespread use of carbon fiber and the latest technology, is a perfect blend of discipline and reason on one hand, and creativity and emotion on the other, as well as a wonderful expression of Azimut Yachts’ DNA. Although the Magellano line was first introduced in 2010, the 25 Metri and soon to follow 30 explore a new design language.

Following on the success of the 120SL introduced in 2012, the current queen of the Azimut superyacht collection is the Grande 35 Metri introduced in 2016. Designed by Stefano Righini with an interior by Achille Salvagni, the builder’s most frequent design duo, the raised pilothouse yacht has a sport-boat like flybridge and a side entry tender garage. It is part of the builder’s wide beam series and features an angular deck forward to provide more working deck area forward of guest sunpads. The Grande line was backfilled with smaller models starting with the 27 metri in 2017 and the 25 Metri and 32 Metri in 2018. The 32 and 35 metre yachts debuted Azimut’s D2P (displacement to planning) hull design created to improved fuel efficiency at displacement speeds.

Initially introduced as Azimut’s first outboard Weekender in 2016, the Verve 40 was a cross between a center console and a cruiser. Azimut added another high-speed outboard powered sport yacht to its line up in 2020 with the Verve 47. Given a deep-V hull design by Michael Peters and styling and interior by Francesco Struglia, the boat looks like a sports car, and with four 450hp Mercury Verados hanging on the stern, hits 50 knots.

Azimut seems to like to try out innovations on it’s S line, such as its use of triple Volvo IPS drives on the S6, S7 and S8 and a stunning integrated bridge display on the S10, all in 2019. The S10 was designed by Italian designer Alberto Mancini while Francesco Guida penned the interior.

AZIMUT GRANDE 35 METRI – THE NEW AZIMUT YACHTS FLAGSHIP

azimut yachts itajai

A wide-body superyacht with Raised Pilot House (RPH) and the possibility of adding a third level for an additional sundeck

– Superior construction technology, with a pure carbon fiber superstructure, a D2P hull with wave piercer, and reduced noise and vibration

– Side garage for tender and jet ski

– Two big beach clubs in the stern and bow

– An owner’s suite with the largest extending terrace on the market

– Uniquely styled interiors designed by Achille Salvagni

– Exterior design by Stefano Righini

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri is the new flagship in Azimut Yachts’ most exclusive line, the Grande Collection. Drawing on Azimut carbon fiber technology and the expertise of Stefano Righini, who defined the concept and designed the exteriors, the yacht offers unprecedented solutions for a boat this size, representing a masterpiece of style and space.

The yacht has a Wide Body with Raised Pilot House (RPH) and supremely sleek exteriors, featuring exceptionally sized full-height windows in both the bow and salon. Unique in this category is the option to add an additional sundeck (almost 30 m2) on a third level, with access from the upper deck in the stern. This solution doesn’t affect the balance of volumes and retains the model’s overall dynamism.

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri delivers the best build quality in its category. The entire superstructure and hardtop are made from pure carbon fiber, which Azimut uses with great success to increase the volume of the structures, and so to offer more space and comfort, but without adding weight to the boat. Epoxy, the non plus ultra of resins, is used alongside the carbon because it has superior mechanical characteristics to the resins normally used.

azimut yachts itajai

With a maximum beam of 7.5 meters, the wide-body Grande 35 Metri has all the features of even bigger superyachts, like the side garage for a 5 meter tender plus a 3.25 meter jet-ski. This leaves the stern completely free for a magnificent 12 m2 beach area provided by the big pivoting swim platform.

A second surprising lounge or beach club area in the bow (30 m2, excluding the side walkways) is fitted with sofas, a sun lounging area and a hydromassage tub. The spacious deck area in front the tub is in fact a platform that can be raised using an electrohydraulic mechanism to gain access to the winches and fender racks beneath. The trapezoidal bow (one of Righini’s hallmarks) provides plenty of space and even more comfort throughout the area during both mooring operations and navigation.

The interiors of the Azimut Grande 35 Metri are designed by world renowned architect Achille Salvagni (one of AD Collector’s top 100 international designers), who uses flowing lines and streamlined shapes to reinterpret various classical features from a distinctive and unmistakably contemporary point of view.

azimut yachts itajai

The various adaptations of the design share the same guiding thread, with one matt, textured type of wood juxtaposed against a darker, polished variety. A series of inserts in exclusive materials like treated brass, bronze and polished stainless steel characterise and contaminate the space, giving it authority and a sense of memory.

The forms created by Salvagni shape and permeate the interiors with a system that is never banal or dictated by fleeting fashions. The interiors are serene, calm and sophisticated in their simplicity, expressing the new approach to well-being under the banner of calm and sophistication.

They provide a neutral backdrop onto which the designer has grafted unique, specially-designed furnishings that enhance and embellish, with meticulous attention to detail. The big circular sofa in the salon on the main deck defines the dynamism and originality of this living area, underscored by the radial arrangement made up of independent components that characterise and define the space, without interfering with the system of walls and windows.

azimut yachts itajai

The main deck contains the owner’s suite, which transmits the same sensation of openness and lightness, where the king size central bed becomes the main feature around which the entire space revolves. The highpoint of the owner’s suite is its unique private balcony, which is unprecedented on a 35 meter yacht. Using a mechanism that is highly sophisticated but extremely straightforward, the section of the full-height window with a carbon fiber frame folds out, while the floor of the balcony extends from under the cabin, protected by automatic pop up stanchions. The result is the Instant Balcony, with no uprights or other obstacles to spoil the panoramic view from the owner’s suite.

Below deck, the layout includes four guest cabins (two VIP cabins with double beds and two with twin beds), with access from a big central lobby. One of the standout features of the Azimut Grande 35 Metri’s interiors is the spiral staircase, which connects all the decks, from the lowerdeck to the pilot house. The backlit onyx steps have different finishings on their external and internal sides (white lacquer and mother of pearl respectively), as if to confirm just how exclusive the design is.

In the bow, in a space that is completely separate from the guest area, the quarters for the six members of crew consist of a crew mess, four cabins and four bathrooms.

No effort has been spared to make the Grande 35 Metri a paradigm of comfort. Special care has been taken over noise reduction, with the use of elastic mountings for the propulsion system transmission and the introduction of modal analysis into the design process. This technique, borrowed from the aerospace industry, is used to study and predict the potential stresses and vibrations to which the surfaces will be subjected, allowing the structures to be planned in such a way as to reduce them to a minimum for excellent acoustic comfort.

The D2P_Displacement to Planing® hull, designed by Pierluigi Ausonio in conjunction with the Azimut Benetti Research & Development center, combines the comfort typical of a displacement hull with the performance of a planing hull and a wave piercer to improve fuel efficiency. The D2P hull with wave

piercer means the yacht can reach high top speeds without needing particularly powerful engines, or navigate in displacement mode with a remarkable range at a cost effective speed. The hull has been optimised for the full range of most frequently used speeds, including both long range displacement mode speeds of 10-12 knots and cruising speeds in semi-displacement mode.

The Grande 35 Metri, with two MTU 16V2000 M93 engines rated 2,400 hp each, has an estimated cruising speed of 21 knots and a top speed of 25.5 knots.

The Azimut Grande 35 Metri is the top of the range in the Grande Collection, representing a step forward in the search for new solutions that benefit owners in terms of their technology, design, comfort and navigation efficiency.

Luxury yacht boatyards

Azimut Yachts serves its customers at over 130 sites worldwide. It boasts the world's most extensive sales network for yachts and megayachts, with representative offices, boatyards, service points and delivery centres located in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Executive Offices: Avigliana - Turin (Italy) Boatyards and representative offices: Viareggio - Lucca (Italy), Itajai (Brazil), Shanghai (China) Service Points: Savona (Italy), Ft. Lauderdale - Florida (USA) With its international presence, Azimut forges and maintains relations with its yacht owners, and is close at hand to help them and their needs.

Style, innovation and quality. Luxury yachts that also stand for value

One of the first reasons why an owner chooses an Azimut yacht is nearly always beauty. Then, the intrinsic values of the product come into play: its comfort, safety features, level of technology and elegant living solutions. Finally, owners want something more between the time of making their choice and the purchase. They want the boatyard that builds the yacht of their dreams to be able to boast a significant history, to have consolidated a network of services, to reflect a successful image and, above all, to be a sound company. In all these aspects, Azimut Yachts can deliver results and guarantees of a true industry leader.

A luxury yacht has value if that value is long-lasting. If its beauty can challenge the seasons. If its style is a source of inspiration for those who are passionate about the sea, and not just a fashion follower. The design of Azimut yachts shapes the Italian essence behind the brand. Each model in the Azimut range reflects the attention to detail and the style excellence of Italian manufacturing.

The construction of luxury yachts requires production efficiency, advanced technologies and an ability to innovate. Boat owners who choose Azimut choose luxury, hi-tech yachts, built at cutting-edge boatyards where the Group's investments in research culminate. Azimut-Benetti's R&D Centre develops technologies that are unique worldwide, for an experience at sea that is effortless and safe. In fact Azimut's technologies are always designed to deliver safety and comfort to yacht owners.

Design, technology, materials, components and human expertise are all Azimut hallmarks that meet a higher standard: quality. This philosophy is possible because Azimut has put its income back into the company, over more than forty years, investing in personnel training, technological research, product development and the upgrading of plants and structures. Only in this way has it been possible to be the number one boatyard of choice worldwide for the construction of megayachts for 12 years running

From 1969 to the present: The history of Azimut

The beginnings.

Azimut Yachts came about in 1969, when the young university student Paolo Vitelli founded Azimut Srl, and began chartering sailing boats.

The first steps towards success

In 1970 some prestigious yachting brands appointed the company to distribute their boats in Italy. Azimut quickly expanded its operations: Apart from distribution, it began to design new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, it designed the AZ 43’ Bali, a mass-produced fibreglass boat, which was an immediate success. The company gradually expanded its range, focussing on the lower end of the market - with the launch of the AZ 32’ Targa in 1977, the “Ford T” of the boat world - and upper end too - (with the memorable début of the Azimut 105’ Failaka in 1982, the biggest mass-produced yacht in fibreglass at the time).

The acquisition of Benetti and the start of own production

In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti. This historical brand, based in Viareggio, had been building boats since 1873, and designed the concept of the megayacht. Azimut was now able construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionise the boat building industry, such as: large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.

New production sites and international recognition

From the late nineties onwards, with the acquisition of new boatyards at Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and the construction of a new site at Avigliana, in the province of Turin, Azimut went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and megayachts. This leadership position was confirmed in subsequent seasons, thanks to numerous business successes and an investment policy which has consolidated Azimut's technological and production capacities over the years, with sites now established in Brazil.

Respect for the environment, turned into tangible results

A yacht with an eco-friendly engine, like a sailing boat? When we achieve this goal in the future, we'll know that the first important steps in this direction were taken at the beginning of this millennium, with projects such as the Magellano 50, the first motor yacht below 60 feet to be awarded RINA Green Plus notation. The Magellano 50 has embraced all the technical and design skills used by Azimut for environmental protection, and is proof of the important results that can be achieved by a company sustainability programme that focuses on the entire value chain, from developing concepts for alternative boats with a low environmental impact to clean production processes.

Azimut Yachts was awarded ISO 14001 certification, for its consistent and effective management system aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Since 2004 the company has used the Core Infusion lamination system and in 2007 research began on the use of low environmental impact paints and resins.

To maximise the eco-compatible standards of the yachts produced at its boatyards, Azimut decided to adopt RINA principles and to achieve RINA Green Plus notation. The result is a remarkable range of innovative solutions, including first and foremost hybrid propulsion motors, to sail with a near-zero reduction in noise levels and lower consumption on short day trips. In addition to: high performance propellers, LED lighting, anti-UV film on windows for better thermal efficiency and environmentally compatible materials. Experiments continue at Azimut's research centres, with the introduction of nanotechnologies to develop a longer-lasting anti-fouling coating with a lower impact for marine life.

Azimut Yachts's unrivalled position in the pleasure boat industry has spurred it on to become a leader in environmental sustainability too, with projects and solutions that are always one step ahead of the competition.

Azimut Yachts for charter

Browse our selection of some of the finest Azimut yachts for charter on the market today.

The Azimut brand began as a small sailing charter company in 1969, and rose to become one of the great luxury yacht builders of the world. Part of the powerful Azimut-Benetti Group but remaining proudly family-owned, Azimut builds fast fibreglass planing yachts from 10 to 37m. Sporting trademark Italian style, impressive performance and advanced technology, Azimut currently constructs five ranges: the Atlantis, Flybridge, S Collection, Magellano Flybridge, and Grande Collection. Azimut has multiple shipyards across Italy and Brazil, and offers the world’s largest yacht dealer and service network. Azimut has achieved RINA Green Plus notation and is known for its innovative eco-friendly solutions.

The Yachts That Make Azimut Great

Azimut came from humble beginnings. In 1969, Paolo Vitelli founded Azimut Srl as a sailing charter company, which quickly made a name for itself as an importer of prestige boat brands. By 1975, Azimut began designing popular fibreglass boats, such as the AZ 43’ Bali, and the AZ 32 Targa, which came to be known as the ‘Fort T of the boating world’ for its mass-produced popularity. By 1982, Azimut had also launched the Azimut 105’ Failaka in 1982, which was the biggest mass-produced fibreglass yacht of its time. However, while these boats were Azimut-designed, they were not built by Azimut. It wasn’t until Azimut acquired Benetti Yachts in 1985 that Azimut had the experience and production facilities to start constructing its own yachts. Azimut would become legendary for their fast planing flybridge yachts, offering innovative design developments that would revolutionise the superyacht industry, including large frameless windows and walnut interiors. Azimut remains at the forefront of fibreglass yacht construction today, with award-winning yacht ranges including the Magellano 50, an eco-friendly dual planing and displacement yacht which was awarded ‘European Powerboat of the Year’ and ‘Best Innovative Design’ at the World Yacht Trophy awards in 2011. The Azimum brand drives constant innovation thanks to the combined R&D might of the Azimut-Benetti Group, and Azimut is an industry leader in environmental sustainability.

Azimut builds its fleet across three shipyards in Italy and one in Brazil. Avigliana, near Turin, is home to Azimut headquarters and a modern shipyard constructing fibreglass yachts under 72 feet. Azimut’s larger vessels are built in the Viareggio yard in a spectacular architect-designed facility complete with an owner’s design lounge for client customisation. Savona is the outfitting, servicing, and delivery yard for Azimut, with state-of-the-art facilities across Savona Port and Varazze Marina. Azimut yachts are also built in Brazil at Itajai shipyard, a modern facility of 200,000sqm. There is also an Azimut Service Centre in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Azimut Yachts is...

Our history.

Azimut Yachts is a success story that comes from 1969 and like any other great story; it is a story of identity, Paolo Vitelli’s identity.

Azimut Yachts came about in 1969, when a young university student Paolo Vitelli founded his first company and began chartering sailing boats. The company gradually expanded its range, focusing on the lower end of the market - with the launch of the AZ 32’ Targa in 1977, the “Ford T” of the boat world - and upper end too - (with the memorable debut of the Azimut 105’ Failaka in 1982, the biggest mass-produced yacht in fibreglass at the time). In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti. This historical brand, based in Viareggio, had been building boats since 1873, and designed the concept of the mega yacht. Azimut was now able construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionize the boat building industry, such as: large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.

From the late nineties onwards, with the acquisition of new boatyards at Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and the construction of a new site at Avigliana, in the province of Turin, Azimut went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and mega yachts. In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti.
