Yacht-Master II

The art of command, starting strong.

As a chronograph with a bold nautical character, the Yacht Master II occupies a singular place in the Rolex roster of Professional watches. It features an unprecedented mechanical function: a countdown that can be programmed and synchronized on the fly to adjust and re-adjust the watch to regatta start times. An essential tool for any coxswain and their decision-making process, as it allows them to take the best start towards victory.

The Yacht-Master II’s bold and distinguished marine character is firmly in line with the spirit of the Oyster Professional watches.

Countdown to the race

As for any voyage at sea, time management is vital in a regatta. At its launch in 2007, the Yacht-Master II features an unprecedented mechanical function: a programmable countdown with mechanical memory, synchronizable on the fly. A function that responds ideally to the need for precise timing during the crucial starting sequence of a regatta.

This flexibility is one of the major assets of the Yacht-Master II; its development was a considerable technological challenge. The programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.

Furthermore, once the watch’s countdown is launched, it can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

The spirit of the sailor

With its unique programmable countdown with a mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization, the Yacht-Master II lays claim to a proud place in the prestigious line of Rolex Professional watches.

An unprecedented combination of complexity and simplicity.

About the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.

A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.

Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.

1958:  Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.

1966:  Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.

1970s:  Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.

1992:  Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.

1994:  Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1996:  Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1997:  Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

2007:  Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

2019:  Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.

Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex yacht-master design.

Rolex Yacht-Master  models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.

Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

The  Rolex Yacht-Master II  is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race.

Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand.

Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion.

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models

The  Rolex Yacht-Master  and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. ROLEX YACHT-MASTER with OYSTERFLEX BRACELET

In 2015, the Oysterflex, Rolex’s patented rubber bracelet, made its debut in the Yacht-Master collection. It’s appearance was also marked by several firsts: the first solid Everose gold Yacht-Master, paired with a matte dial and matte Cerachrom bezel.

The practical and edgy combination of solid gold and rubber continued with the release of the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42 in 2019, and the 18k yellow gold version in 2022. This is a watch for someone who wants a luxurious watch that’s also ready for any adventure.

These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. The Calibre 3235 was also the first movement to receive Rolex’s certification as a Superlative Chronometer, and is regulated to a precision of an impressive -2/+2 seconds a day.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL

The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II STEEL EVEROSE GOLD

The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. On the dial is a smaller version of this countdown. Together, these allow the wearer to select a countdown interval of anywhere from one to ten minutes.

Aside from being one of the most complicated watches in the Rolex portfolio, the Yacht-Master II also stood out because of its unique look, owing to its 44mm case and bold colors. The steel and 18k Everose gold version is a crowd favorite due to its eye-catching combination of rose gold, blue, and red hues.

Yacht-Master II

rolex yacht master 2 release date

THE SKIPPERS’ WATCH

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II is a unique regatta chronograph dedicated to both experienced sailors and yachting enthusiasts.

rolex yacht master 2 release date

A PROFESSIONAL REGATTA CHRONOGRAPH

As in any contest of speed, precision and synchronization are of the essence in a regatta. The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a countdown that can be programmed from 10 to 1 minutes, allowing the wearer to precisely time and follow each race’s specific official starting procedure, which generally unfolds in three stages, marked by sound and visual signals. This flexibility is one of the major assets of the Yacht-Master II; its development was a considerable mechanical challenge. Furthermore, the programming can be mechanically memorized, which makes it possible to start a new countdown without having to reprogramme the watch, for example in the next leg or a subsequent regatta with identical countdown duration.

Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official countdown via the ‘fly-back’ reset function of the seconds hand and adjustment of the countdown minute hand to the nearest minute.

RING COMMAND SYSTEM

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. Its development, a feat of technical prowess, was made possible by the brand’s complete in-house mastery over the design and manufacturing processes, from the case and bracelet to the movement with its many components.

BEZEL WITH CERACHROM INSERT

The bidirectional rotatable bezel on the Yacht-Master II is equipped with a monobloc Cerachrom insert in blue ceramic. This patented insert is made of an extremely hard, virtually scratchproof ceramic whose colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. The numerals and inscriptions are moulded in the ceramic and coloured with gold or platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.

CHROMALIGHT DISPLAY

The Yacht-Master II is an extremely legible watch in all circumstances and even in the dark thanks to the Chromalight display; the hour markers and hands are filled or coated with a luminescent material emitting a long-lasting blue glow – for up to two times longer than traditional phosphorescent materials.

THE YACHT-MASTER II, SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFIED

Like all Rolex watches, the Yacht-Master II is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation attests that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories and according to its own criteria. These certification tests are carried out on the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

The precision of every movement – officially certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) – is tested a second time by Rolex after being cased, to ensure that it meets criteria for precision that are far stricter than those of the official certification. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.

The Superlative Chronometer certification testing is carried out after casing using state-of-the-art equipment specially developed by Rolex and according to an exclusive protocol that simulates the conditions in which a watch is actually worn and more closely represents real-life experience. The entirely automated series of tests also checks the waterproofness, the self-winding capacity and the power reserve of 100 per cent of Rolex watches. These tests systematically complement the qualification testing upstream during development and production, in order to ensure the watches’ reliability, robustness, and resistance to strong magnetic fields and to shocks.

THE OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS

The Yacht-Master II’s Oyster case, 44 mm in diameter and guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness and reliability. The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel or 18 ct gold. The case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only certified Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. It is protected by a crown guard that is an integral part of the middle case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses .

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 4161

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with calibre 4161, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. A consummate demonstration of technology, this movement offers outstanding performance, particularly in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.

Calibre 4161 is based on the 4130 chronograph movement, which equipped the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona until 2022. It is fitted with a traversing column wheel and vertical clutch for an instantaneous and extremely precise chronograph start.

The movement incorporates the blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. In addition to resisting strong magnetic fields, this hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position.

The oscillator of calibre 4161 has a large balance wheel with variable inertia regulated extremely precisely via gold Microstella nuts. It is held firmly in place by a height-adjustable traversing bridge enabling very stable positioning to increase shock resistance.

Calibre 4161 is fitted with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor, which ensures continuous winding of the mainspring by harnessing the movements of the wrist to provide constant energy. It offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours.

The Yacht-Master II’s movement will be seen only by certified Rolex watchmakers, yet it is beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards.

BRACELET AND CLASP, SECURE AND COMFORTABLE

The Yacht-Master II is available on a three-piece link Oyster bracelet that is equipped with a Rolex-designed, patented Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. The bracelet is additionally fitted with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by the brand. This system allows the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, for additional comfort in any circumstance.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II Reference 116681

Rolex Yachtmaster II 116681

2007 was the year Rolex proved that it could only be taunted so much by detractors for the lack of complications in its lineup before it would come out swinging. It has long been the anti-Rolex league’s favorite go-to criticism, holding up the Swiss giant’s catalog of ruggedly simple, almost minimalist, three-hand watches and sneeringly comparing them to the overtly functional pieces from the likes of Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin. Did Rolex lack the imagination to compete with the sky charts and moonphases of other watchmakers? Or was it the technical prowess it was missing? Rolex took it with its usual granite stoicism for decades, with the modesty of the Day-Date’s dual calendar or the Daytona’s chronograph seemingly as extravagant as it was prepared to go. Then, the iconic Swiss watch manufacturer released the Rolex Yacht-Master II series.

Vastly different from the original and less complex Yacht-Master, the Rolex Yacht Master II is a vibrant behemoth that contains one of the most technically impressive complications ever made. As a product, it could also serve as the dictionary definition of the word “niche.” Powered by a new caliber that required more than 35,000 hours to devise, the result was a watch that’s sole purpose was to help yacht skippers coordinate the starting procedure of a sailing regatta. The first models of the collection were available in either yellow or white gold. Then In 2011, the Yacht master II ref. 116681 appeared, which is a striking Rolesor variant that blends tough 904L stainless steel with precious 18k Everose gold. If you’re into big watches that make a bold statement on the wrist, then keep reading for everything you need to know about the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681

Rolex Yacht-Master II Everose Gold 116681

Everose Rolesor Yacht Master II Design

While the styles of the Yacht-Master II watches have split opinions and are a world away from the handsome elegance that has been the Rolex hallmark for over 100 years, this technical yet luxurious sports watch has won plenty of fans. Its concept and sheer audacity have also silenced many of the brand’s critics and Rolex has proved that, should it decide to mix it up in the world of complications, it can compete with the best of them.

As mentioned, the first two Rolex Yacht Master II models that debuted in 2007 were in yellow gold (ref. 116688) and white gold (ref. 116689, which was discontinued in 2022). Five years later, Rolex unveiled the Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 as the two-tone Everose gold and stainless steel variant. The combination of the two metals, the bright blue bezel (crafted from Rolex’s ceramic alloy, Cerachrom), and the flashy dial is certainly not the subtlest of Rolex watches, but somehow, the Yacht-Master II 116681 just works.

The Everose gold elements – on the bezel numerals, crown, pushers, snailing around the seconds sub-dial, and center links of the sporty Oyster bracelet – soften some of the brashness of the all-steel or yellow gold versions. As a variant, it’s a definite eye-catcher. It has retained its rather graceful proportions, especially for such a large piece and one that crams in so much functionality. The 44mm case (the biggest case size in the Rolex fleet that’s only shared by the Deepsea) affords a large surface area for the dial designers to play with. And it’s just as well. There is a lot of information displayed on the watch’s face, but the logical placement of each element gives it legible readability.

At the top is a horseshoe-shaped track numbered to ten. The starting gun in a regatta is preceded by a warning signal, often either five or ten minutes beforehand. It informs participants the countdown has begun, and the Yacht-Master II’s curved gauge is there to precisely time the flying start – the long dagger-like hand marks the countdown seconds while the small red arrow-tipped hand displays the countdown minutes.

However, the clever part comes should our yacht skipper need to reset the countdown for any reason. The watch is the first in the world to feature a mechanical memory with both flyback and fly-forward functionality, and it allows the regatta timer to reset to synchronize with the official race timer – either forwards or backwards to the nearest minute. Therefore, should the countdown have been triggered too early or too late, it’s a simple step to bring it back in line.

Rolex Yacht-Master II Dial Update

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Yacht-Master II, Rolex rolled out redesigned dials across the entire collection – including, of course, the Yacht-Master II ref. 116681. So what changed?

First, Rolex replaced the original straight hands with a Mercedes handset, which is much more common across the brand’s sports watches. Also, the hands of the Yacht Master II 116681 went from a dark blue to Everose gold – a nice touch to match the rest of the pink-toned details of the watch. Another dial update that occurred to bring the face of the Yacht-Master II more in line with Rolex’s other sports watches concerns the shape of the hour markers.

Earlier models featured square lume-filled indexes for each hour. However, after the 2017 dial redesign, Yacht-Master II watches now included an inverted triangle and a rectangle at 12 and 6, respectively. Naturally, since the Yacht-Master II 116681 is an Everose Rolesor edition, the hour markers feature Everose gold surrounds.

Two-Tone Rolex Everose Yacht-Master II 116681 Rolesor

Yacht-Master II Ring Command Bezel and In-House Caliber

The key to the impressive functionality of the Rolex Yachtmaster II lies in the model’s most conspicuous component: the bright blue Cerachrom bezel with its oversized, pink golden numerals. More than simply being the watch’s border, the bezel is central to its overall operation.

Directly linked to the internal movement, the Ring Command Bezel, to give it its proper title, unlocks the programmable actions of the watch by rotating it counter-clockwise through 90 degrees. With the bezel activated, the crown can be used to set the countdown duration and the two pushers at the two and four o’clock positions start and stop the chronograph and work the flyback function. It sounds like a convoluted affair, but in reality, there is a beautifully designed intuitiveness to getting the most out of the Yacht-Master II.

The Rolex engineers have pared down the process as much as possible, while still retaining all the necessary performance. Underneath everything lies the movement. The original references were released with the Cal. 4160, a heavily reworked version of the Daytona’s Cal. 4130, complete with the vertical clutch that eliminates backlash on the chronograph seconds hand.

By 2013, Rolex had perfected the purpose-built Cal. 4161 specifically for the Yacht-Master II. At the time, it was the company’s most component-heavy movement to date, and the Caliber 4161 is constructed from 360 separate parts. As well as the improved accuracy and shock resistance provided by including Rolex’s proprietary Parachrom hairspring, the 31-jewel, high-beat movement also has a power reserve of 72 hours.

Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681 Two-Tone Everose Regatta Timer

Over A Decade of the Rolex 116681 Yacht-Master II

The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 has been a part of the brand’s catalog for over a decade now. Despite the movement update in 2013 to the Caliber 4131 and the dial update that occurred in 2017, Rolex has retained the same reference number since this two-tone variant’s release in 2011. And that’s quite curious given that Rolex has allocated new reference numbers to other watch models that have undergone much more subtle updates. Rolex truly works in mysterious ways!

It’s also interesting to note that in 2022, Rolex discontinued the white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II ref. 116689, which brings the Yacht-Master II lineup down from four references to only three. Perhaps the end of the Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 is near? Though we don’t wish for that to happen, it’s not uncommon for the modern-day Rolex to replace models after about a decade (or less) of production.

While the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681 has an undeniable heft and is ultra-luxurious, it can easily be worn all day. Its watertight Oyster case ensures it’s more than a match for the rigors of life on the ocean and its robust self-winding movement is top-notch. As a skipper’s watch, this Rolex Yacht-Master II is in a class all its own. But even if you don’t sail competitively and only ever use the watch’s innovative timing function in the kitchen (if at all,) the steel and Everose gold Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 is a head-turning luxury sports watch that’s unlike any other in Rolex’s lineup.

Rolex Predictions 2024 – The New Models Rolex Might Launch During Watches and Wonders 2024

The monochrome team delivers its yearly forecast on the potential launches for the 2024 rolex collection..

In only two months, the watch community will focus all its attention on Geneva. In early April, the largest watch fair of the year, Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 , will open its doors. As a yearly tradition for the past decade, it’s time for the MONOCHROME team to get creative and predict what Rolex might unveil, undoubtedly the brand that generates the most anticipation. On Monday, April 9th, at around 9 a.m., the Crown will present its 2024 collection. But it’s time to look into our crystal ball and imagine which models will be unveiled. Like  our predictions for 2014  –  2015  –  2016  –  2017  –  2018  –  2019  – 2020 – 2021  – 2022 – 2023 – we’ve been working hard to guess and design the future Rolex collection. Here are our Rolex Predictions 2024, the watches we anticipate Rolex might present this year.

Please note that this article is a figment of our imagination. These are just predictions. Nothing is official. It is based on our own expectations and analyses.

These predictions have become a ritual for us at MONOCHROME. We truly love doing them and know that you, our readers, enjoy them too. It all started as a rather light-hearted ritual but has now become a more serious exercise, and we take great care in producing realistic renderings and accurate portrayals of potential models. However, in the same breath, we have to confess that it has become more and more difficult to predict what Rolex might launch. While we have great fun discussing, predicting, logically reasoning, and designing these potential novelties, Rolex has recently displayed more creativity. Think about last year’s Emoji-theme Day-Date or the Celebration Dial Oyster Perpetual … However, after a closer look at all previous releases and models that have not yet been revamped in the brand’s collection, here are our Rolex Predictions 2024.

A brand new Milgauss… With Amagnetic Calibre? (ref. 126400)

We start this Rolex predictions article with what is, without a doubt, the most anticipated model of the year: the return of the Rolex Milgauss. You’re certainly aware that the previous generation, known as the reference 116400 , was discontinued last year. This was a somewhat surprising move from the Crown, given the longevity of this watch, created around 1956 (even though it has never been very popular). Removing the Milgauss from the collection would be a pity, specifically in the current context of anti-magnetic watches. The competition has taken anti-magnetism very seriously – Omega and its Master Chronometer certification  or Swatch Group with its Nivachron technology . And, of course, we have to mention internal “competition” from Tudor, which has been implementing the Master Chronometer certification in some of its watches .

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Milgauss 126400 fully amagnetic movement

Considering the model’s discontinuation, the industry’s focus on magnetism, and the revamp of the sister watch, the Air King , we forecast that Rolex will re-launch its scientific watch this year. Visually, we’ve imagined a watch in continuity with the recent Air King, yet with classic elements of the Milgauss. As such, it would be housed in the same 40mm case with the recently introduced crown guards. The dial would retain emblematic elements of this watch, such as the lightning-shaped central hand and discreet orange elements on the minute track, yet with a cleaner all-round look.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Milgauss 126400 fully amagnetic movement

Regarding the movement, the base would be the same as other collections, the latest 32xx generation, slightly modified for anti-magnetism, and most likely with a Master Chronometer certification. This would bring Rolex to the same level as Tudor and Omega, both ranking very high in the field of magnetic resistance (15,000 gauss, much more than the 1,000 gauss implied by the Milgauss name). We also expect the model to become thinner, as the inner Faraday cage would no longer be necessary.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Milgauss 126400 fully amagnetic movement

But we have an even better idea: What if Rolex took even greater strides in the field of resistance to magnetism? The Master Chronometer certification, as advanced as it is, implies watches that are still sensitive to a certain level of magnetism. What if Rolex went down a different route and produced a genuinely amagnetic movement? Knowing the brand’s power in R&D, Rolex could be capable of launching something groundbreaking and unprecedented, a movement that would be totally impervious to magnetism, even to extremely high levels. For that, Rolex would either need to adapt its calibre 3230 by using silicon and non-ferrous parts or maybe develop an entirely new calibre, a so-called AMAGNETIC movement… something you can find printed on the dial of our potential 2024 Rolex Milgauss 126400.

A Revamped, Cleaner Yacht-Master II (Ref. 126680)

For our next watch in the Rolex Predictions 2024, we’ll look at one of the last models to retain a reference number starting with 11 (previous generation models), the Yacht-Master II. Born in 2007, this collection has remained unchanged since its introduction, except for minor changes on the dial in 2017 . As such, it is one of the most flashy and one of the biggest watches in the collection, and it doesn’t quite fall in line with the rest of the brand’s portfolio. We think it is time for the Rolex Yacht-Master II to be redesigned, streamlined and upgraded.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Yacht-Master II new generation 42mm

What could be done to the YMII? First, it is a niche watch with very specific functionalities dedicated to regattas. Its unique chronograph movement (the calibre 4161), with a column wheel and vertical clutch, is enhanced with a programmable countdown function and a mechanical memory. While we don’t want to touch the overall display and how this movement works, we can imagine some mechanical upgrades, such as implementing the Chronergy escapement – minor updates on the same level as last year’s Daytona .

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Yacht-Master II new generation 42mm

However, we have imagined rather important design changes, starting with a reduction in the watch’s size to a slightly more wearable diameter of 42mm. Analyzing the overall look of the previous Yacht-Master II and how it works, we would definitely retain the fantastic Ring Command Bezel device to set the countdown and the dial’s layout. However, we have streamlined the bezel, removing the double 10-0 scale and the larger “Yacht-Master II” engraving in favour of a classic 60 scale to work in conjunction with the central chronograph hand. Finally, in line with its nautical vocation, we’d give this new Yacht-Master II Reference 126680 an optional steel bracelet or a blue Oysterflex rubber strap.

A Possible Return of the Turn-O-Graph

Maybe not the most realistic nor the most anticipated new model to be presented by Rolex in 2024, we have nevertheless imagined what a modern version of the Turn-O-Graph might look like. Presented in 1953, a few months before the Submariner, it was the first production watch to feature a rotating bezel used to count elapsed seconds or minutes thanks to its graduated 0-60 scale. This would also become the base for the brand’s dive watch, the Submariner, sharing the same overall case. With the launch of the latter, the Turn-O-Graph quickly changed style to become a member of the Datejust family, with a partially graduated solid metal bezel, most of the time with a fluted pattern. The latest models were more elegant, with fluted bezels that resemble the standard fixed bezels of the Datejust. The Rolex Turn-O-Graph has long been an underrated watch, with an irregular production and not always with its name printed on the dial.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Datejust Turn-O-Graph Return Ceramic bezel

For the return of the Rolex Turn-O-Graph, we’ve imagined a watch that would be modernized but also consistent with most of the brand’s production. As such, we’re talking about an evolution of the 36mm Datejust with its elegant, restrained proportions, its sleek dial with baton makers, the emblematic cyclops over the date and options for an Oyster or a Jubilee bracelet. However, retaining the main specificity of this watch, we’ve added a thin rotating bezel with a sleek 60-minute scale.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Datejust Turn-O-Graph Return Ceramic bezel

In line with the modern standards of the brand, the rotating bezel of this 2024 Rolex Turn-O-Graph would be ceramic. Following previous iterations of this watch, red accents would be found on the dial – seconds hand, name and date numerals – and power would come from the same movement as a Datejust 36, the calibre 3235. As in the past, this watch would remain an evolution of the Datejust with a more elegant take on its rotating bezel.

Our dream Polar Dial Explorer 36mm and 40mm

If you’ve read our previous prediction articles, you should be familiar with this watch and realise that we’ve been using these predictions to nudge Rolex into creating this watch. We’ve been predicting (or actually wishing for) this watch for several years now, and we know the chances of it materializing are slim. But one can still dream, right? So yes, we’re pushing this one again in our Rolex Predictions 2024.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Explorer Polar Dial White Dial

Here we are again this year with our latest interpretation of the Rolex Explorer Polar dial, based, this time, on the two existing versions of this watch, the Explorer 36 reference 124270 and the Explorer 40 reference 224270 . The idea is rather simple: using the base 36mm or 40mm models and changing their dials to white to create a mirror image of the classic black version. The whole concept isn’t just a figment of our imagination since white dial Explorer watches have existed in the past – see this extremely rare example once auctioned by Christie’s , based on a vintage reference 6610. And even though this white dial Rolex Explorer will undoubtedly retain its unicorn status, we can still dream of it returning to standard production in a modern shape.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Explorer Polar Dial White Dial 40mm 224270

Since the discontinuation of the Oyster Perpetual 39 White Dial reference 114300, there hasn’t really been an alternative in the collection; by this, we mean a clean, white dial sports watch. However, last year, we saw that the group, with its brand Tudor, was not against the idea of bringing white unicorns into the collection … And since there’s already a rather unexpected two-tone Explorer 36, we can still dream about a white dial version, just to break the rules from time to time.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Explorer Polar Dial White Dial

The Comeback of the Daytona Meteorite Dial

While the Rolex Daytona was discreetly updated last year , not all former versions have been brought back yet. Sure, the current Daytona collection is already pretty large, with all possible metals available – steel, Rolesor, yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold and platinum – and there’s even a pretty special Paul Newman-inspired version . The choice of dial colours is also pretty complete, save for one specific version of the Daytona, which has long been a fan favourite…

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Daytona Meteorite Yellow Gold Oysterflex 126518LN

For this reason, we’ve imagined the return of the Meteorite Dial Daytona, following the style of the models introduced in 2021 . As such, the base dial would have a meteorite dial combined with black “panda-style” counters in white, rose or yellow gold. Compared to the 2021 editions, we have, however, streamlined the collection ever so slightly, as all versions could be fitted with a black ceramic bezel – some previous models were available with a solid metal polished bezel – regardless of whether they come with a gold bracelet or an Oysterflex rubber strap.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Daytona Meteorite White Gold Oysterflex 126519LN

These new Rolex Daytona Meteorite models would retain all the updates found in last year’s collection . As such, the dials have smaller rings and narrower markers, the bezel is framed by a metallic element, and the case would use the lightly redesigned shape of 2023. Powering the watch is the calibre 4131 with its Chronergy escapement. Would it be visible under a sapphire crystal? We’d love that.

The Perpetual 1908 Dual-Time and Perpetual 1908 Moonphase

Last but not least, we’ve imagined extensions to the Rolex Perpetual 1908 collection . Successfully launched last year and particularly well received , this watch replaced the Cellini line, exuding more retro charm and elegance. Like the Cellini, we can imagine Rolex introducing minor complications to the collection, such as a practical dual time and a charming moon phase – two functions that used to exist in the Cellini line.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Perpetual 1908 Moonphase

The first complication appearing on the Perpetual 1908 could be a moon phase hosted in an aperture at 6 o’clock. This additional function would necessitate moving the small seconds to the central position, ensuring the elegant enamel and meteorite disc isn’t obstructed. Apart from updates to its movement, this Perpetual 1908 would retain the same proportions as the time-only model and its finely fluted bezel.

Rolex Predictions 2024 - Rolex Watches and Wonders 2024 - Rolex Novelties 2024 - Rolex new models 2024 - Rolex Perpetual 1908 Dual Time

Another possible complication that could appear in the Rolex Perpetual 1908 collection is the dual time display. Already found in the Cellini range , it makes a comeback here with its independent 12-hour counter for home time, adjusted by the crown. To keep track of the time precisely, the day-night indicator is retained; however, it is repositioned in a small window, making sure not to obstruct the dual time track. Once again, the second hand would be relocated to the dial’s centre.

Always fun to see these predictions! Sometimes, one of them hits close to the mark!

Turn-o-graph bezel on Exp40. Suits tool oyster case application better than DJ. Function over history.

I cannot fathom the white dial Explorer is not a thing already

“But we have an even better idea: What if Rolex took even greater strides in the field of resistance to magnetism? The Master Chronometer certification, as advanced as it is, implies watches that are still sensitive to a certain level of magnetism. What if Rolex went down a different route and produced a genuinely amagnetic movement?” Here we go again. This statement demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the science of magnetism. The Omega Master Chronometer movements, and the Tudor ones for that matter, are already “amagnetic” it is just the testing facilities that do not allow testing beyond 1.5 Tesla/15000 Gauss. In tests carried out by WatchTime a Cal.8900 comfortably resisted 3.0 Tesla/30000 Gauss. In any event it is impossible to make anything completely impervious to magnetism because once a magnetic field reaches a high enough field density any substance can be magnetised. Stop peddling scientifically ignorant nonsense.

I predict that Rolex will say that from now on people will be able to buy their watches at ADs and all scammers will be eliminated !!! How does this sound like ?!

Discontinuation of Pepsi GMT? Platinum Sub? I dunno.

The only certainties in life: death, taxes, and white dial Explorer predictions. It’s my favorite prediction every year, never stop. I’ll see you guys back here next year! Cheers!

I’m thinking no Milgauss this year…but next year. For the 1908’s…stone dials. Lapis, onyx, malachite, perhaps jasper?

I think the Milgauss is gone forever. I also feel a new Submariner is going to emerge. Maybe a new colour or a tweak nothing crazy. I actually think it may be a borng year.

– new 1908 will not happen… to early… why that? – Daytona Meteorite: why that? – Milgauss: ok. Would be nice… but why does it differ so much to last year’s proposal – what about a Coke GMT? – what about a 2nd titanium model?

Need a super uncluttered, easily readable Daytona please.

No way the turnograph comes back. IMO, the yachtmaster filled that space

titanium explorer 1

If Rolex are relaunching the Milgauss, it would make sense releasing it in titanium since now the metal is out and they could launch a super lightweight in the everyday lineup.

@SPQR Gosh I so much love your utterly polite tone of voice… Let me simply give you this link to a Rolex IP for watch parts that are a-magnetic to 30,000 Gauss https://database.ipi.ch/database/resources/ds/doc/urn:ige:doc:2485b990f4e1eb355504906554fec22454f7bd9e

I’d love a new turnograph but not your version. 8 think of it as the Thunderbird anyway. Give it some class.. Maybe white dial there.. But not looking like an entry level air king. In fact drop the smirking. And yes to a new milgauss.. But again, not so conservative. And I love that the old one had no crown guards. Made it seem fit for work in a lab.

Coloured dials for the steel Daytona – red, baby blue, green, yellow…

@Frank Geelen His tone is a little harsh, but sorry, the article is completely misleading and SQPR’s answer is perfectly true. There is no absolute amagnetism, just different levels, and Rolex’s patent is not very different from Omega’s solutions (and not necessarily better as well)

A <40 mm polar explorer 2, please!

Titanium Yachtmaster 40

Not sure what the YMII exists. The white dial explorer looks great. Maybe another Ti watch this year?

A 42 RG yacht-master on oysterflex would be awesome.

Rolex Predictions 2024: Yacht-Master II Redesign or Discontinuation?

Rolex Predictions 2024: Yacht-Master II Redesign or Discontinuation?

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is one of the most bewildering watches in The Crown’s catalog. From its niche functionality to its massive self-titled bezel inscription, the 44mm beast stands alone in both its mechanics and aesthetics. Its eccentricity is, at least in part, a product of its age; much like the Milgauss in 2023 , the Yacht-Master II is long overdue for an update or discontinuation. Since its 2007 release, the watch hasn’t seen any significant changes. Today I’d like to revisit the Yacht-Master II, discussing its quirks, potential for improvement, and likelihood for discontinuation.

What is the Yacht-Master II and Why Does it Exist?

Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II features a “regatta chronograph” complication: a countdown timer set in one-minute increments up to ten. The timer’s intended use is to count down the minutes before the starting gun of a yacht race (also known as a regatta). However, the regatta chronograph can also count down the minutes before your next set at the gym, taking dinner out of the oven, or announcing to the room that you are, in fact, wearing a Yacht-Master II. The complication is set using a Ring Command Bezel: Rolex’s mechanically-integrated rotating bezel also seen on the Sky-Dweller . Without question, the Yacht-Master II is one of Rolex’s most complex watches, even today. Aside from its unique movement and functionality, the watch sets itself apart via its aesthetics.

Yellow Gold Rolex Yacht-Master II

There are no two ways around it – the Yacht-Master II is huge. At 44mm across, 14mm thick, and 50mm from lug tip to lug tip, this is the largest Rolex watch outside of the Deepsea collection. Within those dimensions, the Yacht-Master II exhibits a quirky layout like none other. The regatta chronograph’s readout is entirely redundant: numbers 1-10 are included on both the dial and bezel, taking up much of the watch’s visual real estate. Taking up even more of this real estate is the bezel’s large “YACHT-MASTER II” text: something I’m confident Rolex would never put on a watch today. With the exception of the platinum-bezeled white gold configuration (worn by Aaron B. of Bachelor Nation fame) , the Yacht-Master II is equipped with a bright blue ceramic bezel insert: a color that plays nicely with red accents atop a bright white dial.

How Can Rolex Improve The Yacht-Master II?

Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II was released during an interesting time in horology. The late 2000s and early 2010s mark the era of the oversized watch thanks to brands like Panerai and Hublot. The Yacht-Master II is certainly emblematic of this time. It’s safe to say that, in the eyes of modern consumers (beyond just enthusiasts, in my opinion), the Yacht-Master II could most easily be improved by a size reduction. The watch’s current caliber 4161 is no larger in diameter than its base caliber 4130 (the outgoing Daytona movement): just 30mm. In other words, the Yacht-Master II’s large size is not a result of its complex mechanics, it’s a design choice. If we see an updated Yacht-Master II, I’m confident that we’ll see it in a smaller case (even if just slightly), with a movement based on the new caliber 4131.

Another potential improvement for the Yacht-Master II would be an Oysterflex bracelet. Given the Oysterflex’s popularity and adoption in similar product lines (Yacht-Master, Sky-Dweller) , I suspect that Rolex would implement it in a potential future Yacht-Master II.

Will Rolex Discontinue Or Update The Yacht-Master II?

In last year’s round of predictions, I wrote “As far as the Yacht-Master II goes, discontinuation feels just as likely as an update” . The year before that, Everest predicted that the Yacht-Master II would be discontinued. I highlight past years not to double down or solidify any one position; nobody knows what Rolex will or won’t do and I’ll be the first to admit that. I highlight these past predictions to show that, for years now, the longevity of the Yacht-Master II line has been in question. While the watch holds plenty of potential for a redesign (I mean, just imagine a 40-42mm Yacht-Master II on Oysterflex), it could very well be discontinued like last year’s Milgauss. As with all “predictions”, only time will tell what Rolex actually chooses to do.
