Vava II: What makes the UK’s largest yacht an all-time great

  • Superyachts

The largest yacht ever built at a British yard, Vava II features beautiful exterior styling that makes her look sleek and elegant despite her length...

Despite her status as the largest superyacht ever built at a British yard, Vava II’s owner-inspired exterior styling by Redman Whiteley Dixon is not only beautiful but makes the yacht look balanced and sleek.

She’s mainly a yacht of straight lines – the plumb bow, the angle of the superstructure and transom aft to the water, the vertical windows forward – but the sudden kinks of the top deck are a devilish touch.

The interior is by Rémi Tessier. The yacht, refitted at Amels in 2015, has been a regular in cruising hotspots around the world – and she spent the summer of 2016 cruising the Mediterranean.

“Conceived as a ‘world travelling yacht’, Vava II has exceeded expectations in her extended travels to remote locations and such geographically diverse places as the Indian Ocean islands, Indonesia, Alaska, Polynesia, Patagonia and Antarctica, travelling more than 100,000 nautical miles in a little over four years since delivery,” says Captain Richard Bridge.

“The helicopter deck has been used extensively for the embarked Eurocopter AS350B3 for a mix of transfers, sightseeing, heli-skiing and fishing trips, as well as numerous scientific missions. It will shortly be strengthened to be able to operate the larger twin-engined EC 145 T2.

“The main-deck salon with its glass sliding wall opening to become a part of the main-deck aft pool area has proved extremely popular and gives an option of opening the whole indoor/outdoor area for events and parties.

“Another area that has been used extensively is the expansive beach club – adding a large additional deck space, as well as a platform from which to operate the selection of tenders on board.

“The tender garages themselves have doubled as logistics platforms when operating in remote areas such as the Antarctic peninsula and during scientific missions in the Indian Ocean.”

Where is she now? Cruising privately.

The 8 Best New British Yachts on the Water, From Sunseeker to Fairline

Quality among the top u.k. builders is always a given. it's the range of yacht designs that may surprise you..

Pearl 72

As an island, boats have always been the lifeblood of Great Britain. And many British yacht builders continue to uphold the country’s proud naval and maritime traditions. While there are a handful of superyacht builders, the UK isn’t known for eye-wateringly huge megayachts or avant-garde design—though that has changed as its largest international brands compete with the style-obsessed Ferretti Group and Azimut brands.

But what you do find with the Brits is well engineered vessels with a high level of attention to detail in both the interior and exterior design. From semi-custom motoryacht builders like Princess and Sunseeker to the rarefied realm of a highly sought-after Pascoe limousine, there’s something here for nearly every yachtsman.

And thanks to enduring popularity, there is nearly always a British-built sailboat from the Oyster yard, somewhere just over the horizon. In fact, whether you’re cruising the waters of the Caribbean, New England, or the South of France, you’ll find U.K. brands along with the highest luxury offerings from Italy and Northern Europe.

Here are seven of Britain’s finest, newest, and most noteworthy vessels on the water.

Project Fox, Pendennis Shipyard

biggest yachts in the uk

This 114-foot explorer yacht, overseen by project manager Burgess and in build at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, was designed around the owner’s wishes. It has a rugged exterior that will be paired with a bright, contemporary interior by QLondon Design. The owner told Robb Report that he plans to cruise off-grid to remote areas like Norway for heli-skiing with his family and friends (thus necessitating five large staterooms). But he also wanted family-friendly features like a sun terrace, wine lobby, open-air barbecue, and DJ station. Of course, the real breakthrough here: The open stern, measuring more than 1,100 square feet can carry a large complement of toys and tenders, but also scientific equipment (the interior has space for a modular lab) for when the yacht is hosting research scientists. “Flexible cabins and connectivity are key,” said the owner.

The ubiquitous model of the Pearl lineup, the 72 received a creative new interior design earlier this year with the addition of a stateroom that gives it two master suites. The U.K. yard has always been high on haute design, offering different palettes by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, but this double-master suite idea is a first for this size of motoryacht. The yard has recently won awards for the naval architecture of its 95, which approaches superyacht status, and it will be launching a new 85-foot flybridge next year.

Fairline Targa 40

biggest yachts in the uk

Fairline is also among England’s internationally renowned yacht brands, famous for seaworthy hulls and top-tier creature comforts. It hasn’t built yachts as large as competitors Princess and Sunseeker but has been equally creative with the design. The new Targa 40’s cockpit is a case in point. It has an enticing exterior layout, with the cockpit featuring a foldout terrace to starboard and a U-shaped dining settee to port facing the rest of the deck, not to mention the two sun lounges on the stern. The 40 is effectively a dayboat, but with two staterooms, it also works as a family weekender. There’s a master in the forepeak and guest cabin amidships which is best suited for children. The galley below decks is also very functional. Top speed for the Targa is 36 knots with the optional Volvo Penta D6-380 upgrades.

Princess Y80

biggest yachts in the uk

Along with Sunseeker, Princess Yachts is the other heavyweight of British yacht building. These cruisers and motoryachts have proven to be perennial favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. The Y80 debuting at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival looks to continue the tradition. The Y80 brings to the table an “infinity cockpit” with a glass transom and modular furniture for multiple setups. It also has a flybridge that spans about two-thirds of the yacht’s nearly 84-foot length, effectively creating a legitimate third deck. The Y80’s owner’s stateroom is amidships and full beam, while it has a VIP in the forepeak. Two other guest cabins are to port and starboard. The Y80 has an impressive top speed of 30 knots, but at 10 knots the range is an even more impressive 1,000 nautical miles.

Cockwells Duchy Sport

biggest yachts in the uk

The 37-foot Duchy Sport from the Cockwells’ yard in Cornwall, famous internationally for its custom tenders, is designed for watersports enthusiasts. This Sport offers multiple towing points for waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing, with interior space for nine guests. Bow and cockpit sunpads will be popular spots for tanning, while a Bimini covers the amidships. Standout features include a wetbar, retractable swim ladder, bowthruster with joystick control, and of course ample water-toy stowage. The Duchy Sport comes with twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LVs which can get it up to a top speed of 42 knots—a speed befitting of this model’s name. Cockwells is also building a new Duchy 60, a stylized motoryacht that should rival Downeast offerings from U.S. builders Hinckley and Malaysian builder Grand Banks.

biggest yachts in the uk

The Oyster 495 is a 52-foot, 8-inch sailing yacht that entered the U.S. market earlier this year. A new design from the keel up, the U.K. builder was thinking global circumnavigation, or at least serious offshore cruising, from the onset. The yacht is also meant to be able to be singlehanded by a capable sailor. The plumb bow and teak decks imbue the 495 with a definite saltiness with performance and aesthetics. The cabin is noteworthy for being both ergonomic and well-lit. Reported top speeds for the 495 crest the 10-knot mark under sail, while a 100 hp Yanmar diesel pushes it along happily at 9.5 knots.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

biggest yachts in the uk

Sunseeker is one of England’s brands that has a global following. For good reason. The Poole builder has a range of vessels that extend from 38 to 161 feet. Sunseeker is known for good oceangoing performance and creative design. The Superhawk 55 is a reimagining of the Superhawks that enjoyed popularity with performance enthusiasts in the 1990s and Aughts before being discontinued in 2009. Sunseeker introduced the Superhawk 38 in 2020, which had echoes of its go-fast past. This 55, however, is more of a performance cruiser than a day boat. With twin Volvo Penta IPS950s the new Superhawk has a very respectable top end of 38 knots and a feature even Miami Vice hot-boat aficionados will appreciate—slow-speed maneuverability offered by pod propulsion. An aggressively raked profile complemented by stiletto-sharp hullside windows augment the Superhawk’s sporty vibe.

Pascoe E-Limousine Electric Tender

biggest yachts in the uk

Pascoe tenders reside in the garages of some of the world’s biggest and most glamorous superyachts, thanks to the yard’s dedication to customization. The E-Limousine is the builder’s first fully electric vessel, the result of six years of R&D. Top speed is reported to be an impressive 40 knots, with a range of 60 nautical miles at a fast cruise of 20 knots. The builder says not only is this boat greener than a traditional tender but will also offer a smoother, quieter ride thanks to the construction used to mitigate vibration.

Top 12 UK Harbours

Here’s our list of the top 12 harbours, anchorages and marinas not to miss around our shores.

Tobermory

This is without doubt the prettiest town on the west coast of Scotland. And it has one of the best harbours, which was known long before the town itself was built. Murdoch Mackenzie, an Orcadian, produced the first charts of the west coast, and the first sailing directions in 1776, when he wrote that Tobermory bay was “a very fine place for large ships; for it is sheltered from all winds, the ground good, and the depth moderate”. Now there are pontoons and mooring buoys, as well as the anchorage.

Titanic Museum, Belfast

Belfast, specifically the Abercorn Basin Marina right in the centre of town, is next to the Titanic Experience, opened in 2012. It may seem odd to celebrate a disaster, but the museum is as much about the extraordinary effort that was made by Harland and Wolff to build the ship, how so many thousands of men were involved (3,000 hammered in 3 million rivets between them), how many eggs it carried on its first and final voyage (40,000!), who was on board, and so on.

3. Caernarfon

Canaervon

There are many castles around our coast but there are not many you can stop really close to. Here is a really spectacular one. You can take the ground underneath its walls as Libby Purves and her family did in 1988 in her round-UK book One Summer’s Grace . Today most tie up to a pontoon in the adjacent Victoria Dock Marina, which is accessible at HW+/-2. Mind you, to get there one has to deal with the notorious Swellies rocks in the Menai Strait, which, despite their reputation, are no big deal.

4. Isles of Scilly

Tresco, Scilly

Each island is different. St Mary’s is rather touristy and maybe somewhat dull with exposed moorings. Tresco is upmarket with a shop that seems like an offshoot of Fortnum and Mason, but it has tremendous gardens well worth the £12 entrance fee. St Agnes is a bit alternative and has great ice-creams. There are visitor moorings at St Mary’s, St Martin’s, and in Old and New Grimsby Sounds. See more on ST ‘s trip to Scilly here .

5. Plymouth

Plymouth Sound

Famed for the Hoe, Drake, the Mayflower and – still – the British Navy. Full of maritime history and an important place to see. For the prettiest sights, stick to the coast and walk all the way round from the Barbican with its buzzing cafes and bars via the Hoe to the beautifully restored and revitalised Royal William Yard. See our Gull’s Eye feature on Mayflower Marina .

6. Weymouth

Weymouth

You have to visit at least one classic British seaside town with that bewitching and evocative combination of an active harbour with pontoons for visiting yachts, a safe and extensive town beach with Punch and Judy shows and candy floss, good pubs, restaurants and trippers. If you can, visit the Royal Dorset Yacht Club – full of fascinating maritime history.

7. Lymington

Lymington

One of the quintessential British harbour towns, Lymington offers two well-protected marinas, and makes a superb base for exploring the sheltered Solent by boat, or the New Forest by land. The cobbled town quay and steep High Street still offer plenty of independent shops and fine, old pubs.

Tower Bridge, London

You can sail right up to Tower Bridge although you do have to dodge the many tourist boats and put up with the chop produced by their wakes. Of course, you have to take the tide up and later back down again, as sailors have done for centuries, but that is no problem in one six-hour tide if you get a move on under engine if necessary.

9. Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea

The harbourmaster picks you up on his camera as you arrive at the fairway buoy and then talks you up the buoyed channel which completely dries out at low tide (“Going a bit too far to port, mate”). Once in the pool you are right in among the lovely old buildings, the shops and pubs and the children crabbing.

Whitby

One of the few easy-to-enter harbours on the east coast between the Humber and the Forth. But as well as being a fascinating place to stop over, there is the Dracula connection, the Captain Cook connection, a supermarket right next to the marina, St Mary’s church up the 199 steps on the hill next to the spooky ruined abbey, pubs, and a famous chippy.

Mousa

A small uninhabited island in the Shetlands which most people have probably never heard of. However, it has the best preserved Iron Age (about 1000BC) broch in the UK, right next to the anchorage.

12. North Ronaldsay, Orkney

North Ronaldsay

You can get a really interesting guided tour to the very top of the tallest land-based lighthouse in the UK – by the last lighthouse keeper no less.

Take a look at 22 Superyachts that have visited the UK in 2022

biggest yachts in the uk

The number of Superyachts that visited the UK in 2022 is a record breaking figure. Despite the United Kingdom and Ireland being non-traditional cruising destinations, over the past year they’ve proven to be quite the yachting hotspots. MGMT’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Upton, says “throughout Winter 2021 and the past year, MGMT yacht agency have received a significant increase in inquiries from yachts whose owners want to explore the West coast of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, to those wanting to cruise down the sunny Southwest coast, and London.”

As a result of the success of 2022, the UK has established itself as a global Superyacht hub, and 2023 will see the UK continue to rise in popularity.

Britain’s largest luxury yacht maker is steering its way back to full production after having gone into lockdown – and is now putting its latest superyacht though its paces in the sea off Plymouth.

The super-spacious Princess X95 is described by Plymouth’s Princess Yachts as “boldly re-writing the rules of yacht design” and is expected to set a new benchmark for superyacht quality and design.

Princess Yachts said the boat is the product of an “aggressive investment strategy”, and was made possible because of the company’s record financial position and full order book.

Princess Yachts began returning to production in early May 2020, and is now looking to fulfil is order book for 2020 and 2021 after bringing back workers from furlough following the eight-week “controlled shut-down” at its city plants, including at Stonehouse and Devonport.

With 80% of staff now back at their stations, and stringent safety measures in place, the company is accelerating production and the long-awaited X95, first revealed in 2018, is now undergoing extensive sea trials.

The vessel is the product of fresh investment into the latest technology, innovation, quality and design excellence, the company said, and is “another bold new design from a company moving forward at pace, breaking down boundaries and shattering expectations”.

Designed with what Princess Yachts calls an “open concept” in mind, the X95 is the first model in the company’s new X Class.

The vessel features large, adaptable spaces that can be used and formatted in numerous ways, and X95’s interior design allows the owner to define each journey around guests’ preferences such as comfortable and relaxing, high levels of privacy, or entertaining and hosting.

Antony Sheriff, executive chairman at Princess Yachts, said: “X95 is another bold new concept for Princess Yachts. Borne from our aggressive investment strategy into new technology and world-class design, the X Class creates an entirely new segment, representing another significant step in our new product programme. We continue to push the boundaries of yacht design and build a brand leadership position in the luxury yacht market.”

The X95 features a unique concept for the flybridge and main deck interior, both of which cover almost the full length of the yacht, creating the Super Flybridge – the X Class’s defining characteristic.

The layout provides 10% more outdoor space and 40% more indoor space than a traditional motor yacht.

This leap forward in space and versatility mirrors recent innovations from luxury automotive brands who have developed crossover models.

Princess’ long-standing naval architect Bernard Olesinski worked on the design in partnership with Italian design house Pininfarina to create a vessel for people who wish to spend significant time aboard to explore cruising grounds further afield.

The lengthening of the main deck to the bow has created an “unprecedented” space, extending to almost 18m (59ft). This large, open space, flooded with light by full height port and starboard glazing, can be configured in a traditional fashion with a sofa and coffee table area with a servery, integrated drinks refrigerator and icemaker, a private galley, and a master cabin with 270-degreer panoramic tinted, toughened glass windows.

A customer could also choose to configure the X95 by replacing the stateroom with a cinema lounge.

Alternatively, the X95 can offer a more informal layout, with a single large open space that encompasses a large saloon, a full width open-plan chef’s kitchen with a large centre island and breakfast bar, and a connected dining or recreation area with 270-degree views to port, starboard and the bow.

“Combined with the spacious and flexible main deck space and the unique Sky Lounge, the X95 has a range of living spaces, indoor and outdoor, that dwarfs those of any other boat of its size.”

Why are more superyachts visiting the UK?

There has been a sharp and sustained increase in the number of superyachts visiting UK shores over the past 12 months. It’s a trend that has been welcomed by British marine businesses but has caused intrigue among yachting professionals elsewhere in the world.

On the face of it, the United Kingdom is not a traditional yachting destination. Its typically cooler and wetter climate is a sharp contrast from the warm and sunny weather owners and charter guests tend to crave. Exclusive beaches are at a premium and only the hardiest of souls would fancy a scuba diving excursion in the English Channel.

But clearly, there are different attractions that are enticing the world’s superyacht set to the UK. The magnetic appeal of London is obvious, but what are the other reasons behind the country’s flourishing popularity?

Yachting Pages explores the details behind the recent surge of superyacht visitors to British shores, tapping into the specialist knowledge and experience of local marine businesses at the heart of the upsurge.

Butler's Wharf Pier on the Thames

The abiding attraction of London to superyacht owners

Despite the aforementioned drawbacks in terms of climate and weather, the UK has one very obvious, superficial selling point right from the outset: the bright lights of London.

England’s metropolis is the home of big business and hosts an array of top-level sporting, fashion and celebrity events throughout the year. The world’s wealthiest and most influential people gravitate to such occasions, including superyacht owners and charter guests.

Edward Livett, a director at London-based marine services provider Livetts , told Yachting Pages that prominent events and the exciting marketing opportunities available along the Thames are two reasons why so many superyachts are making their way to the UK.

Livetts owns Butler’s Wharf Pier on the Thames, a popular visitor mooring location, and has assisted hundreds of yachts across its 30-year history. The company has a deep understanding of the British yachting scene and has a firm handle on the reasons behind the wave of new arrivals.

“The owners of the yachts often have affiliations to large-scale events hosted in London,” Livett said. “Whether it be sporting or fashion, it’s usually no coincidence if there is a big NFL game on at Wembley that there will be a superyacht on the Thames.

“Often the owners will host large parties on board, and having the boat moored in an iconic location on the Thames gives the event a point of difference. It’s the perfect excuse to mix business and pleasure.

“The Thames is highly recognisable and iconic. Quite often the scale of the visiting yachts are such that they warrant a Tower Bridge lift. The photo and video content you get from a Tower Bridge lift is unrivalled in the yachting world in my opinion. It’s the perfect way to show off a new paint job or complete new build.”

At this point everything is easy to understand: big events attract wealthy, high-profile attendees. It’s what London is renowned for. But events and photo opportunities alone are unlikely to explain the significant and prolonged upturn in superyachts visiting the UK. It’s not like London is hosting twice as many eye-catching events now compared to previous years – in fact the pandemic has had the opposite effect – so the reality must lie beneath the surface.

It should be noted that many superyacht owners will have business interests in the UK, so that would account for some visits, but in the burgeoning world of remote working, it’s clearly only a minor contributing factor. The same applies for owners with property in the UK; their fleeting visits to the country are unlikely to be a significant catalyst for the increase the country has seen in 2021 and 2022 so far.

It begs the question: what other factors are at play?

Royal Huisman's Phi on sea trials

The positive effects of Brexit on yachting in the UK: taxes, refits and English law

As is often the case with wealthy businesspeople, the answer revolves around what makes the most business sense. Ultimately owners will go where they can enjoy the greatest benefits – and the UK has become a prime location in that regard since Britain departed the European Union (EU) on 31st December 2020.

Updated regulations since Brexit, coupled with the vast maritime law experience of British firms, has transformed the UK into a preferred yachting destination for many owners.

A number of luxury superyachts have opted to spend the 2021/2022 European winter season in London, with Royal Huisman’s 58.5-metre (192-foot) PHI, Amels’ 83-metre (272-foot) Here Comes The Sun and Oceanco’s 109-metre (358-foot) Bravo Eugenia among the yachts to have set up base.

Alasdair Milroy, owner of Breaking The Mould Accountancy , explained to us the impact Brexit has had on the industry and why it’s transformed the UK into such an attractive option.

“Britain leaving the UK on 31st December 2020 created changes in the fiscal and flag landscape for superyacht owners. Before this the UK was an EU member; on 1st January as a non-EU country both UK resident [including those using the non-domicile regime] and other non-EU resident owners could register the yacht under UK flag and then enter the EU under the Temporary Admission rules.

“Other yachts may return to reset the Return Good Relief rules which allowed three years for goods to return if they were outside of the UK on 31st December 2020 and VAT had been paid in the UK at an earlier date, retaining their free circulation status.”

Dilara Dayioglugil, founder and consultant at Sodac Law , expanded on this point. She drilled down into the specifics of how taxes and VAT will affect UK yacht owners moving forward – and why it means they may return to the UK more often, or alternatively not leave the UK much in the first place.

“As non-EU residents, UK boat owners can claim Temporary Importation Relief (TIR) in the EU for 18 months, after which they will need to take their boat out of the EU before Customs duty and VAT become due. However, this 18-month exemption period can be renewed endlessly by leaving the EU every time and restarting the TIR clock.

“This would allow any individuals who are permanent residents or citizens in the UK to sail into the EU Customs area without paying import VAT. However, if the yacht sails into the UK, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will demand UK import VAT.

“Despite Brexit and all the changes we are reading about in the news, it has been a great development for the superyacht sector, and now the country has become on trend for superyachts.”

Yacht refits in the UK

Dayioglugil expressed a further two key influencing factors: UK refits and the certainty of English law and contracts.

Superyacht at Gunwharf

“The biggest potential side effect of Brexit is that the UK has now become a destination for refits for non-UK flagged yachts. Yachts leaving refit in Northern Europe have traditionally made a voyage to Norway in order to clear out of the EU before re-entering. As of the UK's exit from the European Union, these yachts will now be able to enter the south, that is, the UK. They can also buy fuel much cheaper, stock up on supplies and also take part in a guest trip in London at the same time.

“In addition, now any qualifying superyacht can reduce its tax exposure by applying for an Inward Processing Exemption from VAT on any repair expense. However, for the yacht to be able to maintain EU VAT paid status, firstly a superyacht must return to the EU within three years, and secondly it must be in substantially the same condition as when it left the EU.

“A major refit could punch a hole in this with a possible VAT charge on re-importation into the EU, calculated on the value of the repair job. However, for non-UK yachts which are benefitting from Temporary Importation Relief in the EU, the problems of Returning Goods Relief will not apply to them and in those circumstances, VAT-free refits in the UK begin to look attractive.”

Certainty of English law and contracts

“Individuals who would like to build new yachts, charter, buy or sell yachts – or do anything which requires a contract – are still making the agreements according to English law,” Dayioglugil said.

“It’s relatively easy to assess a shipowner's exposure to risk and potential liability under a charter party that provides London arbitration in accordance with English law. This is because English law has many court orders and arbitration awards that can be used to assess such risk and liability in commercial and maritime matters.

“Although the December 2020 Agreement [EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement] does not contain any information on the law of contracts and judicial processes, it is certain that Brexit has not reduced confidence in English law.”

These key developments, ironically prompted by a Brexit agreement that has caused chaos and confusion in other industries, has altered the yachting scene immeasurably. Suddenly there are a number of convincing reasons for superyachts to visit or stay in the UK, and we’re seeing many owners opting to exploit it.

The Channel Islands appear to be thriving too. They have their own USPs, but they may also be profiting from the UK’s situation, as Milroy pointed out to us.

“The Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey have seen an increase in visits from superyachts,” he noted. “They’re easy to reach on the way south and before crossing the Bay of Biscay, allowing for weather planning as well as duty-free refuelling and leaving the EU to reset the Temporary Admission periods.

“Yachts of UK owners looking to travel to the Caribbean or the EU ports in the Mediterranean can also use delivery to the Channel Islands for fiscal purposes. Both Jersey and Guernsey have their own registries which belong to the highly regarded Red Ensign Group registries.”

Interestingly, Milroy also observed that the UK is an advantageous destination for crew members as well as owners. The plethora of crew training providers and certification opportunities make it a productive place to be.

Superyacht facilities in the UK

In the UK there are a number of marinas and mooring locations across the south of England that meet the high-quality requirements of superyachts. Many visiting vessels opt to moor in the Thames for at least some of their stay, utilising facilities such as the aforementioned Butler’s Wharf Pier, while a great number also head to coastal locations across Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

Among the superyacht-ready ports in this region is Poole Harbour , a destination full of character and steeped in history. Ideally located on the south coast, Poole Harbour is a leading choice for superyachts before or after a voyage to London.

“Poole Harbour has been developed over hundreds of years, and has become the perfect location for superyachts,” port manager Kerrie Gray explained. “From the roads of our historic Old Town, to the blissful Blue Flag beaches of Sandbanks, visitors are sure to enjoy their stay in this iconic port.

“Being in the centre of England’s south coast, our location plays nicely into the hands of captains and yacht owners stopping over en route to refit, or new builds making their maiden voyage from the shipyard. North European cruising has a new starting point; visitors can enjoy the breath-taking Jurassic Coast, take in the white cliffs of Dover, drift past the Scottish Highlands and beyond.”

It’s not just the tried and tested British ports that are benefitting from the increased number of superyachts: Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, Hampshire, is another destination being chosen as a stop-off by visitors. In 2021 it enjoyed a record year of visits, and its assistant managed operations manager Mark Collings is delighted with the Quays’ growing popularity – and he’s confident it will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

“2021 saw an unprecedented level of enquiry for superyacht berthing, and Gunwharf Quays has been delighted to welcome a record number of 11 superyachts in a year. Many of our superyacht guests have taken advantage of being able to stop in the UK in transit to and from the yards in Northern Europe.

“With our easy access berthing and a welcoming marina team we have built great relationships with agents and captains alike, and our 2022 bookings are already looking stronger than ever.”

Superyacht Amaryllis in Gunwharf

Will the UK trend become normality?

Trends are nothing new. One year certain destinations are hot, the next they’re not. That’s the nature of the world we live in.

Based on the evidence, however, the UK’s newfound popularity doesn’t appear to be a fad. The reasons why yachts are visiting are compelling and unmoving: the reality of Brexit combined with the financial advantages, refit opportunities and enduring allure of London are irresistible to owners.

A-list celebrities are also demonstrating advocacy for the UK. In 2021, Hollywood star Tom Cruise was spotted aboard 68-metre (223-foot) Nobiskrug superyacht Triple Seven in various locations around the south coast of England and as far north as Edinburgh in Scotland, with the Mission Impossible actor keen to make the most of everything the UK has to offer.

During his stay on board, he made several trips by tender to the mainland and enjoyed a number of prestigious sporting events in and around London, including the Wimbledon tennis championships, the British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone and the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

His stay proved that the UK is not just an ideal destination for owners; it’s a haven for discerning charter guests too.

It’s clear the escalating number of superyachts descending on the UK is a significant development within the industry. It has brought business, money, influence and empowerment to the country and put the UK firmly on the global superyacht map.

The evolution remains in its infancy, but it’s only likely to accelerate as time progresses and more superyachts utilise the advantages of visiting. The UK is the new place to be.

Luxury on the Waves: The Largest Yachts in the World

The largest yachts in the world are more than just a testament to wealth — they represent the pinnacle of luxury marine engineering and cutting-edge design. Welcome to the world of superyachts where we’ll take a look at the world’s largest yacht and the biggest sailing yacht on the seven seas.

Vast suites, gyms, pools, discos, helipads, ballrooms and even state-of-the-art science laboratories. No, we’re not talking about the world’s biggest hotels, we’re talking about the largest yachts in the world. These water-bound wonders, furnished in the finest décor, and studded with every conceivable amenity that an ultra-luxury lifestyle demands, push the boundaries of physical possibility and encapsulate the true meaning of extravagance.

The contenders for the title of world’s largest yacht is a journey through meticulously curated interiors, awe-inspiring exteriors, and groundbreaking technology that not only breaks the waves but also the norms of luxury. So, prepare to dive into an ocean of extravagance where indulgence knows no bounds.

Read on to find out which is the biggest yacht in the world by length.

Length : 96.5 metres | Tonnage : 2,991

Launched in 2016, Faith was built in the Netherlands by Feadship and is powered by twin 3,100 hp diesel engines with a top speed of 31 km/h. It’s believed the superyacht cost somewhere in the region of $200 million. It may not be the biggest yacht in the world but it’s one of the most opulent, with teak laid decks, a grand piano, beach club, underwater lights, cinema, beauty salon and a lift.

Length : 127 metres | Tonnage : 3,300

Koru, the Māori word for ‘new beginnings’, is believed to be the world’s biggest sailing yacht. Costing a reported $500 million, the schooner-rigged sailing yacht was built in the Netherlands and will be followed by a 75-metre support vessel carrying relief supplies, a helicopter and crew accommodation.

Length : 138 metres | Tonnage : 7,841

Rising Sun was built at a reported cost of $290 million in 2004 by German shipyard Lürssen. It was later extended by eighteen metres to ensure it was longer than Octopus, another of the world’s largest yachts. The 8,000m2 superyacht’s 82 rooms include a beauty salon, gym, sauna, wine cellar and basketball court.

Prince Abdulaziz

Length : 147 metres | Tonnage : 8,233

Built by Danish shipbuilder Helsingør Værft in 1984, the Prince Abdulaziz was, when it was launched, the longest and tallest yacht in the world. Almost four decades on, it remains one of the largest yachts in the world. The interior was designed by David Nightingale Hicks and it’s believed that the main lobby is a replica of the reception area of the Titanic. It cost a reported $184 million and includes a hospital and cinema.

Length : 162 metres | Tonnage : 13,470

Costing around $400 million, the Andrew Winch-designed superyacht was once the biggest yacht in the world before being eclipsed by Eclipse. With a capacity for 115 guests and 88 crew, Dubai has 1.2 million litre diesel tanks, a range of 15,700 kilometres and is home to a disco, cinema, squash court and a lobster tank.

Length : 162.5 metres | Tonnage : 13,000

Designed by award-winning superyacht designer Terence Disdale, Eclipse was built in Germany by renowned shipyard Blohm + Voss. When it was delivered in 2009, it was the biggest yacht in the world. It’s believed to have seventeen staterooms and what has been described as a ‘palatial master suite’, as well as one of the largest swimming pools ever built on a private yacht. At a reported cost of $500 million, Eclipse is equipped with a submarine, three landing boats and two helipads.

Length : 180 metres | Tonnage : 13,136

The world’s largest yacht was built by Lürssen in 2013. Costing a reported $600 million, Azzam’s luxurious interior, which includes a 29-metre long main salon, was designed by Christophe Leoni to evoke the Empire style of the nineteenth century and it can accommodate 36 guests and a crew of 80.

The Pinnacle of Luxury

The magic of these yachts lies not only in their extraordinary dimensions, but also in the exceptional attention to detail, bespoke design, and unparalleled luxury they offer. From private cinemas to onboard hospitals, these vessels encapsulate an almost surreal level of opulence that truly redefines the concept of marine luxury. These floating palaces have changed the landscape of wealth and grandeur, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Whether it’s the Empire style glory of Azzam, the remarkable expansiveness of the Eclipse, or the exquisite allure of Faith, each one of these yachts embodies a world of unbounded luxury that floats on the rhythm of the waves. But beyond the extravagant indulgence, these vessels are also a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess.

The largest yachts in the world are more than just symbols of superfluous wealth — they are epic engineering projects that encapsulate the zenith of design, technology, and nautical mechanics, all while riding the crest of the boundless ocean.

Testimonials

We found Ancasta, Leo, Rupert and the team at Port Solent office, incredibly helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. This was our first boat and we uncertain about the process, with their help it was simple, any questions we had, and we had a lot, were answered quickly.Collection of the boat was made simple, all paperwork was provided and importantly, explained to us, the boat was inspected, Leo’s knowledge of the operation and explanations of this boat were helpful and for myself a must. The bottle of champagne he brought for us was so appreciated, this together with the assurance that we could still contact Ancasta for any help / advice after we sailed was away, again very reassuring. With our thanks to Ancasta.
Excellent team effort. Lots of good advice and guidance through the sale process
Hi Veronika and TeamThank you for a fantastic day on Friday. Everything was perfect and ran like clockwork! We’re delighted with the boat and very pleased we chose the GT41 - it’s going to be perfect for us. We were also very touched by the gifts - a really kind gesture! The trip down to Plymouth went very smoothly and was a real experience, at about 20-24 knots most of the way, and we’re now safely moored in Plymouth for the year. Tim Ball was brilliant.Thank you all for helping us through the purchase process from start to finish - we’re really pleased we bought our new boat from Ancasta. All the best
After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!
Bonjour à tous Un carton plein (mais pas rouge) pour le courtier d'Ancasta Benoit SIZUN. Professionnel , présent quand il le faut, de bon conseil, à l'écoute, un suivi parfait...le top!Hello everyone A solid card (but not red) for Ancasta broker Benoit SIZUN. Professional, present when needed, good advice, attentive, perfect follow-up...the best!
The Ancaster team at Dartmouth have gone above and beyond in assisting with a somewhat less than straight forward international sale and they have managed to keep their professionalism and attention to detail at the forefront throughout. A BigThank you to you guys
I was amazed at the outstanding level of support and effectiveness Geraint and the team at Port Solent have provided through the sale of our yacht.  They achieved a very fair price in a short period of time – a far better outcome than my previous yacht sale experiences.  I would gladly recommend using Ancasta for yacht sales to my friends and family. Best
Excellent work completed at a competitive price. Staff went the extra mile arranging sail laundering in a edition to the servicing and routine maintenance work
I thought that I would drop you a line to say how very pleased we were with the help and support we got from Kostas and Josiane in Ancasta Badalona. We always felt that they were working for us, not just to make a sale. In particular Kostas was able to help and advise on some of the little touches to make Ione look a little better for sale – replacing a rusty heads jubilee clip, acid cleaning around some seacocks etc. In addition he went well beyond the call of duty in taking me to his chiropractor when I wrecked my back cleaning in lockers! We are now mourning being boatless for the first time in over 40 years. Best wishes.
Ancasta were able to quickly source a replacement hatch for me and arrange for despatch the same day. The service was excellent.
The Ancasters team, particularly Nick and Jennifer, are totally professional and they greatly reduce the headache involved in selling a boat. They are very knowledgeable and kept me informed of progress all the way through the process.
I recently bought and sold yachts through Ancasta.  In terms of our purchase, Ancasta were the only broker to actively engage with us during our year long search, despite contacting most of the leading brokers.  Lewis at Ancasta Dartmouth was particularly helpful in this regard, and brought a number of yachts to our attention. The sale, through Andy at Ancasta Salcombe, was seamlessly achieved, at full asking price.  We were kept fully informed throughout and were impressed by the professionalism and energy brought to the process.

The Best Marinas in the UK: The Complete Guide

The UK, being an island nation, has an extensive coastline – over 10,000 miles – featuring a huge number of harbours and marinas. These locations play a vital role in the country’s maritime culture and serve as gateways to the open sea, hubs for boating communities, and often encompass local businesses and social enterprises.

In a way, they’re much like miniature towns or villages and are home to many people across the country. In fact, over the last few years there’s been a surge in demand for marina occupancy, with more and more people looking to buy or rent houseboats rather than traditional accommodation.

We’ve compiled a list – Top 10 T ips for Marina Safety – to help answer some of the questions you might have about living on, or visiting, a marina.

Below is a guide to the best marinas in the UK, across the South of England, the North of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Best Marinas in the UK

Brighton marina.

The UK’s largest marina is in Brighton, one of England’s most vibrant and interesting cities. Of all the marinas on the south coast, Brighton’s is definitely a favourite for tourists and locals alike. From here, you can go on fishing expeditions, explore the Rampion Wind Farm or venture further to visit the Channel Islands. We offer comprehensive Yacht insurance which is definitely worth considering, especially for some of these more adventurous outings.

biggest yachts in the uk

We’ve also assembled a short list of the Top 5 Places to Sail in the UK , which might inform which marinas and harbours you’d most like to visit or dock in.

The Best Harbours in the UK

Just as there are many marinas throughout the UK, plenty of harbours across the country are worth exploring, too. In fact, many sites function as both – in the sense that some marinas are part of broader harbour facilities.

Some of the most frequently recommended and popular harbours in the UK include Tobermory in Western Scotland, Belfast’s harbour, Caernarfon in North Wales and Whitby harbour in England.

The Most Affordable Marinas in the UK

It’s not clear which is the cheapest marina in the UK, but some areas are certainly more affordable than others. Mooring fees start at around £1,000 annually, and some good places to consider if you’re on a tight budget include the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the Forth and Clyde Canal, and Littlehampton Marina.

Can you live on a boat in a marina in the UK?

You can live on a boat in a marina in the UK, but it’s not necessarily easy to acquire the necessary permissions. According to Shelter, “very few permanent residential moorings for boats are available.” Because of this, some people who live on houseboats are “continuous cruisers.”

This is a lifestyle where individuals or families live on narrowboats, houseboats, or other floating homes, and have to continuously navigate the waterways – typically canals and rivers – without staying in one place for an extended period.

Normally, people without “permanent mooring” status are only allowed to dock at a particular location for 14 days before having to move elsewhere. This can make it difficult to feel settled and organise your day-to-day life.

How much does it cost to keep a boat in a marina in the UK?

The cost to keep a boat in a marina in the UK depends on a number of factors, but mooring fees are likely to be your principal and highest expense. Other fees may also apply though, including insurance (which Admiral Marine offers), maintenance and repairs, fuel, and any additional amenities offered by the marina.

Princess Yachts' 55-year rise to become UK's biggest yacht maker

The luxury yacht-building company began its journey in Stonehouse, right here in the heart of the city

Princess Yachts is today recognised as one of the world leaders in the boat building industry - but the company comes from humble beginnings, starting off right here in Plymouth in 1965.

Today Princess Yachts shipyards cover an area of over 1.1 million square feet, in an area rich in British maritime heritage.

The luxury boat building firm was initially founded as Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd, to fit out and charter ‘Project 31’. But this boat was sold - and the potential of sales was realised.

Then, between 1966 and 1969 more than 150 boats were produced and sold by the company.

Last year, Princess Yachts launched its flagship yacht, the eye-catching Princess X95.

The boat is described by the company as “boldly re-writing the rules of yacht design” and is expected to set a new benchmark for superyacht quality and design.

Princess Yachts said the boat is the product of an “aggressive investment strategy”, and was made possible because of the company’s record financial position and full order book.

The X95 is borne from fresh investment into the latest technology, innovation, quality and design excellence, the company said, and is “another bold new design from a company moving forward at pace, breaking down boundaries and shattering expectations”.

The luxury boat building firm was initially founded as Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd, to fit out and charter ‘Project 31’

Princess X95 - her incredible specifications

The vessel features large, adaptable spaces that can be used and formatted in numerous ways, and X95’s interior design allows the owner to define each journey around guests’ preferences such as comfortable and relaxing, high levels of privacy, or entertaining and hosting.

Princess Yachts' executive chairman Antony Sheriff

Antony Sheriff, executive chairman at Princess Yachts, said: “X95 is another bold new concept for Princess Yachts. Borne from our aggressive investment strategy into new technology and world-class design, the X Class creates an entirely new segment, representing another significant step in our new product programme.

"We continue to push the boundaries of yacht design and build a brand leadership position in the luxury yacht market.”

Looking back at Princess Yachts history - a timeline

From 1970, following the success of Project 31 - the company's first ever boat - Princess Yachts ventured into Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) moulding and produced the first Princess 32 - which debuted at London Boat Show.

This model continued for 10 years with more than 1,200 being sold - making it one of the most successful models in the company’s history.

In 1980, Princess 30DS was the first in a new generation of designs by Bernard Olesinski - with over 500 sold between 1981 and 1989.

biggest yachts in the uk

This was the beginning of a design relationship that continues to the present day, Princess Yachts said.

And just one year later in 1981, Princess 45 was introduced, a landmark design and at the time the largest production motor yacht in the UK.

Over 400 were sold in nine years until it was eventually replaced by the Princess 455.

In 1988, Princess Yachts was awarded the Queen’s Export award, and the following year in 1989, a new manufacturing facility, Langage 1, was built in the Plymouth area.

In 1997, new purpose-built headquarters were opened at Newport Street in Stonehouse. As well as this, Princess Yachts' Coypool site was acquired, and an extension was built at their Langage location to create Langage 2 for the production of the V Class range.

It's worth noting that throughout this entire time, the company was still called Marine Projects, and it wasn't until 2001 that it became Princess Yachts International PLC.

Four years later in 2005, Princess Yachts celebrated 40 years at the forefront of boat building, and looking at the company's history this seems like around the time a lot started happening for the company on an international scale.

Between 2005 and 2010 the company launched many new boats, and in 2009 even acquired on a long-term lease from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) a new site - South Yard, which is located in Plymouth 's historic Devonport Royal Dockyard.

In 2011, the company acquired the freehold from the MOD for South Yard and won financial backing from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) for a major investment in the site.

2012 was a landmark year for the Plymouth-headquartered firm, which saw the launches of the smallest craft produced by the company in over a decade, the second generation Princess V39, and the largest vessel the company has ever built, the Princess 40M.

The 40M, a 132-foot superyacht, also made history as the biggest composite motor yacht ever to be built in Britain.

The company said: "The 40M offers six-star accommodation for up to 12 guests, with well-appointed cabins for up to seven crew and the largest internal volume in her class.

"Everything about this stunning yacht is measured in superlatives, from its massive 230kg anchors at the bow to the voluminous garage in the stern, which has space not just for a 6.2-metre tender, but for two personal watercraft as well."

biggest yachts in the uk

In 2015, Princess Yachts celebrated 50 years in the business of motor yacht manufacture, and to mark the occasion the company restored the original Princess yacht, Project 31.

This boat then made her debut appearance at the Cannes Yachting festival alongside the global launch of the new Princess 35M celebrating the company's journey through half a century.

In 2016, the company embarked on a new partnership with the Marine Conservation Society in a commitment to preserve the world’s oceans, Princess Yachts said.

The company continued creating and launching new models from 2016 onward, and continues to do so today - with a brand new model, the all-new Princess X80 - launching this year.

The X80 - launching this year

Princess Yachts is so delighted with the new vessel it is saying that no sooner had it “re-written the rules” on yacht design with the X95, than it has done it again.

Antony Sheriff, executive chairman at Princess Yachts, said: “The X Class’s ground-breaking architecture creates an entirely new product segment as Princess continues to push the boundaries of yacht design.

“The first X95 has just completed sea trials and her revolutionary design has caused a stir. Initial feedback makes it clear that we have a great success on our hands.

“We have worked over the past two years to envelop all of the X95’s unique qualities into a more compact package. The X80 is just that, another bold step for Princess Yachts“.

Factors to consider when choosing a yacht company

When choosing a yacht company, there are several factors to consider to ensure that you select the right company for your needs. Following are some crucial considerations.:

One of the most critical factors to consider when choosing a yacht company is their reputation. It’s essential to select a company with a solid reputation for delivering high-quality services, as this ensures that you’ll receive exceptional service and support throughout your trip. Look for companies with positive reviews and testimonials from previous clients, as this can give you an idea of what to expect.

Fleet size and condition

Another essential factor to consider when choosing a yacht company is their fleet size and condition. You’ll want to choose a company with a range of yachts to choose from, so you can find one that suits your needs and preferences. Additionally, it’s important to select a company with well-maintained yachts, as this ensures that your trip will be safe and enjoyable.

Crew qualifications and experience

The crew on your yacht can make or break your trip, so it’s crucial to choose a company with a team of qualified and experienced crew members. Look for companies that employ crew members with the appropriate qualifications and certifications, as well as extensive experience in the industry.

Customization options

Every client has unique needs and preferences, so it’s important to choose a yacht company that offers customization options. This can include everything from selecting the destination and itinerary to customizing the menu and activities on board. Look for companies that are flexible and willing to work with you to create a trip that meets your specific needs.

Pricing and packages

Of course, pricing is an important factor to consider when choosing a yacht company. Look for companies that offer transparent pricing and clear packages, so you can be confident in what you’re getting for your money. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always be the best, as quality and service are essential factors to consider as well.

Customer service and support

Finally, it’s important to select a yacht company that offers excellent customer service and support. Look for companies that are responsive and easy to work with, and that have a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring that your trip goes smoothly. This can include everything from pre-trip planning to post-trip support, so you can enjoy a stress-free experience from start to finish.

In conclusion, the UK offers some of the best yacht companies in the world, providing clients with exceptional service, luxurious accommodations, and unforgettable experiences. London gallery with ‘no atmosphere’ crowned the most disappointing attraction in UK

Interior of Tate Modern

The UK’s most disappointing tourist attractions in the UK have been crowned – and five of the top 10 are in London .

In at number one was the Tate Modern, which 23% of visitors felt was a let-down despite its iconic status.

Although the gallery boasts over 5,000 ‘excellent’ reviews on Tripadvisor, many disagree over it’s must-see reputation.

Reviewers who gave it three stars or less described the Tate Modern as ‘boring’ with ‘no atmosphere’, with over 1,000 people rating it as ‘poor’ or ‘terrible’.

Among them, Sam M said it was ‘worth a miss’ and ‘the most pointless’ of other free attractions she’d been to in London, while Elaine C commented: ‘Don’t bother! Waste of time with nothing to see’.

Others criticised the fact they had to pay to see exhibitions, as well as long queuesto get into more popular shows like Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors .

The Tate Modern

The pieces displayed here were also a flop for some, including Chris I who wrote: ‘Absolute garbage. I can’t get over in 100 characters just how terrible and utterly pretentious this gallery is.’

Contemporary art fans, however, loved the collection displayed (one of the biggest in the world) and the Tate’s 10th floor observatory, cafe, and industrial architecture were all praised.

The Science Museum, also in London, came in second on the list, compiled by language learning platform Preply .

London Science Museum

More than one in five visitors (22%) were disappointed by the attraction, with several reviews stating it wasn’t ‘hand-on’ enough for children and didn’t offer enough ‘experiments and interactive elements’.

Millions visit the Kensington museum each year, viewing objects from Puffing Billy (the oldest surviving steam locomotive) to a range of games consoles from the last 50 years. It also houses an IMAX cinema, which is used mostly for events and educational films.

Stonehenge in Wiltshire took third spot in terms of visitor disappointment , upsetting 21% for its entry fee (adult tickets range from £22.70 to £31), overcrowding at peak times, and ‘lack of imagination’ when it comes to the exhibition area.

Blue skies over Stonehenge historic site

This was followed by Blackpool Tower and the Southbank Centre, both of which disappointed 20% of those who visited. Pricing was a big factor in many people’s judgements, alongside queues and limited things for children to do.

London spots Somerset House and the Natural History Museum made the list too, as did the Angel of the North, Edinburgh Castle and Cardiff Castle.

So if you’re planning a day out and don’t want a dud, researching what to expect beforehand can help you avoid sightseer’s remorse.
