The Hobie Tandem Island Mirage trimaran sailing kayak is the two-seater big brother to the Adventure Island (AI), which was designed and built by Hobie due to popular demand. The ‘TI’ as it is otherwise known is bigger, faster, more stable and offers greater carrying capacity and versatility. The TI is a tandem trimaran sailing vessel that is easily the most capable Hobie Miragedrive boat, partly because it can also be used as a kayak and Polynesian-style outrigger as well as a sailing trimaran. The ability to configure the TI to suit the conditions on the day makes it a highly capable craft that can do more in a greater variety of conditions.

Used as a kayak the Hobie Tandem Island is the fastest tandem model in Hobie’s fleet, as well as being the most stable. As an outrigger it is even more stable and doesn’t suffer too much from a loss of speed. When there is little or no wind the TI can be used to great effect in either configuration, ideal for touring, sight-seeing, kayak fishing and camping trips. When the wind is blowing, however, the TI absolutely shines in it’s default state as a trimaran. Light winds will move the TI along at a steady pace and stronger winds will push it along with eyebrow raising speeds, the respective experience ranging from serenely relaxing to downright thrilling.

Absolutely love it. I solo…

Love the kayak. it’s a…, i should have bought this…, my wife has two bad knees….

My wife has two bad knees from too many skiing accidents. We tried this kayak at a demonstration. That was the first night she was able to sleep without pain in her knees. We purchased this used kayak in 2015. Since then we have taken it to many lakes in northern California. Placing and removing this 95 pound beast on and off the truck is not an easy chore. Once the kayak is on the water it is GREAT. I refer to it as a tug boat it is so stable and powerful. I purchased longer fins for one of the mirage drives which really provides much greater power. When camping I often get up early to get on the water before sunrise. I have no problem using a cart to roll the kayak to and from the water by myself. Once on the water the kayak glides along with just one person in the back. The ability to peddle while holding a sandwich in one hand and a beverage in the other is quite convenient. The only reason I didn't give this kayak five stars is the weight. I will likely buy another one if this one is ever damaged beyond repair.

I love this boat. Yes, boat. Can't even get the other kayakers from the kayak club to call it a kayak, lol. It gets looks and compliments everywhere it goes. I tell folks "it's the Swiss Army Knife of kayaks." Everything it does, it does well. I use mine primarily for sailing and fishing, and was Initially surprised at how easy it "peddles" through the water for a "kayak" that weighs about 250#, even when solo, which is how I take it out 95% of the time. Ramp launch/ recovery takes about 15 minutes. Beach/ surf/ shoreline launch and recovery about 45 minutes but that is breaking it down into pieces which doesn't have to be done with some of the bigger dollies. There is nothing that comes close to the versatility of this thing, and with aftermarket trampolines that stretch over the outriggers, there's plenty of room for extra passengers, fishing and even camping gear. It loves fair and foul weather. My favorite sailing is in 15-25 mph winds with 2-4' waves- really puts the boat through its paces and it eats it like candy. Though I've heard some have, I've never taken it out in single hull mode. Always with the outriggers and sail though sometimes the sail starts out strapped to the outriggers. It turns surprisingly well if you concentrate the fin sweeps at the centerline. I have found it can make about a 20' diameter circle- not bad for an 18' kayak.

We purchased our Red…

We purchased our Red Hibiscus 2016 Tandem Island a little over a year ago, in mid 2017. My wife and I are the primary users, and we are mid 50's. As others have pointed out, it is a bit expensive, and we waited until we located a year end model at a Hobie dealer located on our way to the beach. Our first experiences were in Wolf Bay, in Orange Beach, AL. I already had experience surf launching large (Jackson Kayak Kracken 13.5) and knew better than to attempt surf launches until I was really confortable with the kayak.

Prior to owning the TI, we had never sailed. The learning curve has been easy, but I started slowly, and have sailed conservatively as the skills build. We have sailed the kayak in Lake Lanier, GA and in Wolf Bay, Orange Beach, AL for the past year and truly love the kayak. We intend to sail a little in the Gulf a little this year, and camp if we have opportunity.

We intended to also use the TI as a tandem sit on top kayak, but every time we have opportunity to get on the water, we prefer to sail it. The options of paddling, pedaling and sailing right out of the box produce an extremely flexible system where I don't worry about light winds and calm - we can always pedal. In fact, we pedal as we sail in ligh winds quite often and enjoy the exercise.

We have experienced no major issues with the TI. We have experienced a broken rudder pin that after researching I attribute to my loading and unloading onto the ladder track on my truck. If I am not careful, the rudder (and rudder pin) are stressed quite a bit as I load and unload the kayak.

We take a waterproof speaker and play music as we sail - it just doesn't get any better!

How fast can a hobie tandem island go.

The Hobie Tandem Island (TI) is capable of sailing speeds of up to 20 kilometres per hour or approximately 11 knots in favourable winds and conditions. Under pedal power, the TI is one of the fastest pedal kayaks on the water thanks to its dual Mirage Drives with turbo fins and narrow hull form for minimal drag.

Can one person use a Hobie Tandem Island?

Despite being a tandem 2-person kayak, the Hobie Tandem Island is well suited to single-person use thanks to its simple and easy-to-manage sailing systems.

With replicated controls for steering and lowering/retracting the rudder from both cockpits and the ability to control the furling and sheeting systems from either seat, you do not need 2 people to sail this craft.

The narrow low-drag hull profile is easily propelled by a single MirageDrive 180 pedal system thanks to its excellent efficiency and turbo fins as standard. Hobie’s intelligent design means set up of the AMA outriggers, mast and sailing systems can easily be achieved alone with minimal fuss or wasted time.

Can you fish from the Hobie Tandem Island?

Can you car-top a Hobie Tandem Island?

Car-topping Hobie’s tandem island is a good option for those with a suitable vehicle who don’t want the added expense of a dedicated trailer.

Thanks to Hobie’s intelligent design, the AMA outriggers can be conveniently folded into the hull providing a maximum width of just 1.22 m. Alternatively, the AMAs and the AKA arms can be completely removed with zero tools to reduce the hull weight to just 59 kg.

Loading aids such as the T-Loader from Rhino can take almost all of the effort out of loading and unloading the craft from your roof racks, perfect for solo users or anyone looking to simplify the process.

Is the Tandem Island easy to sail?

What on earth is a kayatamaran?

Do you enjoy spending time on the water and want a unique and thrilling way to experience the Great Lakes? Adventure paddler and outdoor enthusiast,  Diana Lee , will introduce you to her new water toy that harnesses the wind but can also be powered by paddling and pedalling. 

As an avid stand-up paddleboarder, I love flat water days.

As a lake surfer, I love windy, wavy days.

As a cycling enthusiast, I love day trips spent riding in nature or exploring nearby cities.

There are days where I am torn choosing between activities, but I recently found a way that combines elements from some of my favourite summer sports.

What is a kayatamaran? 

Meet the Hobie Mirage Tandem Island .

While I've heard people call it a trimaran, I call it a "kayatamaran,” a term I made up but here’s why—the central part is a kayak. Two amas or outriggers attach to it, making it look like a catamaran. And like a catamaran, it’s got a sail, but it’s got the added innovation of pedal drives for each passenger (think: pedal boats but way more sophisticated). I have the tandem option, but there is a solo model called Adventure Island .

The outriggers and mast are collapsible, making it easy for transportation, storage or journeys where there’s a height limit (e.g. a bridge over the water). The pedal drives can be removed for transport or while navigating shallow waters.

Why Though?

There are so many reasons to try out this fun watercraft!

It's a great option for people new to sailing. As someone with no extensive sailing experience, I love that I can enjoy the ride while learning how to harness the wind in this durable and forgiving ‘sailboat with training wheels,’ as perfectly noted by Rob Lytle, a certified sailing instructor and manager from Fogh Marine , one of the few retailers in Ontario for the Hobie Mirage Tandem Island . The outriggers help improve stability, so it is less likely to capsize if you make any mistakes. If the wind changes or dies off, the boat can still be powered by the pedals or paddling. Or you can keep pedalling even when the sail is open, and the boat will fly! Weee! In the Tandem Island, both sailors seated in front and back can actively manage the sail and rudder. Even experienced sailors can enjoy a comfortable, seated sailing experience.

For families looking to get out on the water together – The two seats are great, but we purchased ‘trampolines’ (the black fabric platforms that stretch between the outrigger arms) so that we can bring along our dogs! The trampolines can also carry items like a dry bag you or anything you don’t mind getting wet. There are additional hatches along the kayak body to store gear.

For the water adventurer—imagine travelling longer distances for day trips or even island-hopping for overnight adventures!

If you enjoy kayaking, fishing, stand-up paddleboarding (yes, I aim to bring my SUP aboard one day), or any other water sports, a trimaran/kayatamaran is another fun way to get out on the water without having to choose between your favourite activities. 

Before Paddling in Ontario…

Before venturing out, remember to check the weather and water conditions. Always wear a lifejacket and let someone know your paddling plans. Review Transport Canada’s rules and required gear for operating watercraft safely and check the local municipality for the most up-to-date info on safety guidelines. Always travel responsibly.

Where To Go on your kayatamaran

If you’re wondering where to go with a kayatamaran, here are some ideas:

Toronto (Lake Toronto) Launch from Cherry Beach , then head over to Tommy Thompson Park and check out the cormorants or head out of Outer Harbour towards the Toronto Islands. If you’re going into the harbour through the Eastern Gap, watch for boat traffic.

Scarborough Bluffs (Lake Ontario) Launch directly from Bluffers Park (boat ramp or beach launch) or from Kew-Balmy Beach for a longer trip to see the towering white cliffs formed by the natural process of wind and water erosion from Lake Ontario 12,000 years ago!  

Lake Simcoe Launch from Sibbald Point Provincial Park (boat ramp or beach launch), visit Georgina Island nearby.

Georgian Bay Launch from Killbear Provincial Park (boat ramp or beach launch) and explore nearby islands (thanks for this tip, Rob!)

Lake Nipissing, North Bay Launch from Marathon Beach (boat ramp or beach launch) and explore the Manitou Islands Provincial Park , accessible only by boat.  

Lake Temiskaming/Timiskaming Launch from New Liskeard Beach (beach launch) or one of the many marinas and visit Devil’s Rock .

While there’s no shortage of lakes with interesting shorelines or islands to explore in Ontario, Rob from Fogh Marine said it best: “go wherever your competence takes you.”

While sailing in Toronto harbour means getting postcard-worthy views of the city’s skyline, there can be lots of boat traffic, including ferries and water taxis. Be sure to stay outside of the Toronto Island airport’s buoys and be mindful when entering the harbour through the Eastern or Western gap.

If you’re a beginner sailor, stay close to shore and stick to protected areas. If you have more experience, Ontario is the best choose-your-own-water-adventure playground, especially if you’re not afraid of getting a little wet!

Essential gear Because I paddle all year round, having a drysuit and wetsuits can significantly extend your kayatamaran sailing season. Paddling-specific lifejackets are also recommended as they’ll fit more comfortably while seated in the boat or won’t hinder movement.
