Baglietto Club M

What happens when an expert, visionary owner find a designer capable of putting flesh on the bones of his dream, an architect that creates interiors that are nothing short of masterful, and a yard capable of building it all?  Normally speaking when these four variables come together (a rarity in itself), they produce a milestone yacht in the history of design. That is exactly what has happened with Club M, the 40m built by Baglietto with exteriors Horacio Bozzo and interiors by Achille Salvagni. A magically talented trio from whom it would be hard to expect anything short of spectacular. Such was the meticulous care and attention lavished on this project that it took the owner three entire years to choose the designers and yard to build the boat of his dreams.

club m yacht owner

And now the result of that extreme dedication to excellence is here for all to see. Club M is a yacht that no one will forget in a hurry. Built on an ad hoc naval platform, she is clothed in unusual, purposeful lines that revolutionise the very idea of the RPH yacht. The owner himself admits that he and Bozzo hit it off straight away, in large part because of the Italian-Argentinian’s ability to produce the unusual. “The owner provided an extremely precise brief,” the latter told us. “He asked for a boat that could be used in any kind of weather condition, that would offer panoramic views, and have natural ventilation and lighting in its interior. It also had to be silent with no difference in levels between bow and stern. All clothed in clean, spare lines”.

club m yacht owner

No sooner said than done. Bozzo created a 39.75m masterpiece. The sporty Club M has strong horizontal lines which blur her vertical lines thanks to a compact twin deck layout and an equally subtle central deckhouse. Overall, she exudes a sense of both power and extreme elegance. “At the owner’s request, the hull has just two decks plus a sun deck,” continues Bozzo. “The latter is on a single level and has large side walkways between bow and stern and even a hideaway stepladder which can be used to connect main and lower deck without needing to go aft”.

club m yacht owner

In the middle is the deckhouse which includes the helm and the living area with its individually openable windows. Forward of the deckhouse is an arrangement of sofas and a low table while there is a bar and a relaxation area aft. “One of the most unusual features aboard Club M is the crew-only al fresco relaxation area which the owner wanted inset into the foremost area. A real rarity on a craft of this size,” continues Bozzo. But while Club M’s exterior is unforgettable, Achille Salvagni’s interiors are the real masterpiece and were developed hand-in-glove with the owner who has a solid background in real estate.

club m yacht owner

The first impression boarding are the many, many subtle references, all of which whisper rather than shout. There are lunar references as well as some of the ambience of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey and even the Star Trek Enterprise. Soft, rounded surfaces beckon, their simplicity seductive. Ironically, they were unbelievably complex to actually craft.

club m yacht owner

“Club M is a very sophisticated boat with forms that are extremely surprising indeed,” explains Achille Salvagni. “In the interiors, I took my inspiration from Jules Verne. During one conversation, the owner told me that he wanted a boat that would be his way of escaping the everyday, a spaceship he could take refuge in and get away from the world. I took him at his word and developed my own nautical take on aeronautical forms that are a mix between an imaginary future and great memories of the past. That creates a tension that ensures the result will always stay fresh”.

club m yacht owner

The interiors are thus a continuous string of forms that embrace, flank, cocoon, protect. And because this is a Salvagni project, they are executed using – to put it mildly – some very unusual materials for a yacht and with meticulous precision. The closets, for instance, are trimmed in parchment and required Salvagni to call in a master craftsman who had worked with Giò Ponti. The surfaces feel sculpted by wind and water.

club m yacht owner

Although appear simple at first glance, they are actually so complex that they demanded the skills and experience of master cabinetmakers. Walls and ceilings curve into each other with not a sharp angle in sight. Not an easy effect to achieve with wood. But that’s only small fry compared to the master suite that Salvagni designed as the ultimate womblike refuge whose forms cocoon and soothe mind and spirit. Its roundness and convex ceiling too stretched the yard’s technical prowess.

club m yacht owner

“Achille Salvagni is an architect that makes challenging requests,” smiles Fabio Ermetto, Chief Commercial Officer at Baglietto. “And that is exactly why our team was so delighted to work with him – testing yourself is always stimulating”. Club M’s owner chose her length deliberately to ensure that he would have complete go-anywhere, small crew freedom.

club m yacht owner

“Club M was a very challenging boat in terms of the construction of both the interiors and exteriors. She has extremely complex details that took some really in-depth research. On a boat like that, you can’t afford to make mistakes,” continues Ermetto. “It was an extraordinary challenge for us but also confirms that aluminium, which is part of our DNA, is the perfect material for full custom craft, a sector we are focusing hard on and in which we have just proved we have a lot up our sleeve”.

club m yacht owner

In short, Club M pushed many different boundaries, on many different levels. She is a triumph for all concerned, a fact confirmed when her interiors wowed the jury to take victory at the Boat Design & Innovation Awards in July and at the World Superyacht Awards in September.

At the Yacht Club de Monaco the inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock

MONACO, March 21, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Combining adventure and innovation. At the Yacht Club de Monaco the inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock took place, as part of the activities planned for the Ocean Week and under the aegis of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach. The seven yachts displayed on the quay of the Club, M/Y Beyond Capricorn, M/Y Prometej, M/Y Audace, M/Y King Benji, S/Y NDS Evolution, M/Y U Boat Navigator and M/Y Santandrea, represent the combination of passion for adventure and innovation. Each one is designed to navigate beyond traditional boundaries and face the challenges of the oceans.

Capturing everyone’s attention on the quay was the christening of the brand new M/Y King Benji. Attending the event dedicated to the 46 meters megayacht, built by Dunya Yachts and designed by Greg Marshall, there were many guests alongside with the Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

“I am very humbled and proud to be here because it took years to build this yacht. It requires a lot of passion, dedication and team work with Greg Marshall and other designers. And finally she’s here and we’re proud of it,” said Sedat Ergun owner of Dunya Yachts. “We’re thriving to be a custom builder, we’re building many different yachts. Everyone’s different from each other. We love exploration. So when the client came to us, we loved it and we got on well since day one. It actually is a funny story because he came in as a crew member so we didn’t know he was the client. We talked about it and I said ‘we love the project’ and I think he felt the passion about it,” he added. Everything started from a sketch. “I flew to a meeting with the owner and he described what he was looking for and why he couldn’t buy it anywhere in the world. So I pulled out a piece of paper and just started drawing and in the first minutes he said ‘that’s it.’”

“We adjusted the sketches and it was just what you see here and it never happens. The boat is what I’d design for myself. We had a full-sized mock up build of the boat so we could walk through it 4-5 years ago. And now to see it here surrounded by the Yacht Club it just makes your skin tingle,” said Greg Marshall. From the famous naval architect pencil also came out the M/Y Artefact, that won the YCM Explorer Award in 2022.

Meanwhile everything’s ready for the Environmental Symposium. A day of conference for the industry, owners & captains, taking place on Thursday the 20th of March, organised in collaboration with The Explorer’s Club of New York. A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the ‘explorer’ activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga. In the afternoon it will be time for the Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts. The aim is to recognise owners who take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The major criteria for these awards are the owner’s conception of their superyacht, how they use it and what it can do for humanity. It could be a technical innovation that significantly reduces the yacht’s CO2 emissions, the assistance given to scientists, or just an ability to pass on and share adventures at sea so that many more people come to respect, love and protect the Ocean.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous also will be on. Organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, it is a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

My Life in Boats: On board 26m Lady M with owner and entrepreneur Michael Weiss

The former medical entrepreneur tells Grace Trofa how he came to own his Princess Y85 Lady M

"I kind of grew up with boating. I was born in Miami and my father had sailboats, then we moved to Atlanta and had small boats that we took out on Lake Lanier. But I had this idea I wanted to be an ambassador, so I was educated abroad and travelled the world. I worked for the government and later got involved with biological manufacturing and pharmaceuticals and developed biologics, so after 20 years I am very well versed in what is going on today with infectious diseases.

"It wasn’t until I came back to the States when I was 25 that I bought my first boat, a Searay 170. Then, when we were in our thirties, my wife Cheryl, who grew up on the water, and I decided to buy two Cigarette boats, which we kept at Government Cut in Miami. I swear my wife’s back problems stem from our crazy days of racing from Miami to Bimini.

"Then my father-in-law told me to stop wasting money; he was going to build a 28 metre riverboat. We had Hargrave do the hull and for a while it was the largest riverboat on Lake Lanier. It was a great lifestyle, shuttling friends out to our private island, but I decided it was time I started looking towards our future, and I knew it would involve water, so we began looking for an ocean boat. I finally decided on a 22.8 metre Princess. I met some of their carpenters at a boat show and the quality of their artisanship convinced me. But once I realized I would retire, we moved up to the 26 metre so that I could have a small office by converting the dinette on the pilothouse. I’m tall, so the most comfortable spot for me is the corner of the sofa, but it’s also the favored spot for my wife to do her needlepoint with our sheltie, Winter, by her side – she wins.

"I’ve had 15 boats and we are now discussing what will be the next one. I don’t want anything larger than 34 metres, or I won’t be able to get into our spot at the start of the wall at Ocean Reef, and we like the view and the access. Our home is in Atlanta, but for the last two years we have been living on the boat, which is a great place to quarantine.

"You constantly run into people you know on the circuit; we are like one big family. What excites me the most is when we get ready to go and start the engines, hearing that rumble and feeling the slight vibration sets my mood.

"My favourite memories are the simple ones, such as when we were in the Exumas and sharks came up on the swim platform wanting to play, or seeing people wave, smile and take photos as we passed through the Cape Cod Canal. We can’t wait to plan our next adventure. My favourite time on board is at sunset, having a grapefruit Martini on the flybridge with family and friends, enjoying the natural elements. This is what I have always wanted in life. It is a dream come true."

And finally she's here and we're proud of it," said Sedat Ergun owner of Dunya Yachts. "We're thriving to be a custom builder, we're building many different yachts. Everyone's different from each other. We love exploration. So when the client came to us, we loved it and we got on well since day one. It actually is a funny story because he came in as a crew member so we didn't know he was the client. We talked about it and I said 'we love the project' and I think he felt the passion about it," he added. Everything started from a sketch. "I flew to a meeting with the owner and he described what he was looking for and why he couldn't buy it anywhere in the world. So I pulled out a piece of paper and just started drawing and in the first minutes he said 'that's it.'"

"We adjusted the sketches and it was just what you see here and it never happens. The boat is what I'd design for myself. We had a full-sized mock up build of the boat so we could walk through it 4-5 years ago. And now to see it here surrounded by the Yacht Club it just makes your skin tingle," said Greg Marshall. From the famous naval architect pencil also came out the M/Y Artefact, that won the YCM Explorer Award in 2022.

Meanwhile everything's ready for the Environmental Symposium. A day of conference for the industry, owners & captains, taking place on Thursday the 20th of March, organised in collaboration with The Explorer's Club of New York. A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the 'explorer' activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga. In the afternoon it will be time for the Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts. The aim is to recognise owners who take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The major criteria for these awards are the owner's conception of their superyacht, how they use it and what it can do for humanity. It could be a technical innovation that significantly reduces the yacht's CO2 emissions, the assistance given to scientists, or just an ability to pass on and share adventures at sea so that many more people come to respect, love and protect the Ocean.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous also will be on. Organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, it is a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
