Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Basic specs.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case X-79 will typically require a power of 3 - 4 hp, alternatively 71 - 85 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for X-79 is 2.48, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for X-79 is about 123 kg/cm, alternatively 691 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 123 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 691 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

My second hand boat / X-79: A reasonable sailboat to introduce your children to sailing

x yacht 79

A sailboat to share the passion of family sailing

When Richard set out to buy a boat in 2021, it was not his first sailboat . After having a Muscadet for several years, he had a Grand Soleil 40 in the Mediterranean, but the Lorient native now has his sights set on another program: "I wanted to take over a boat to introduce my children to sailing. I thought of taking over a Muscadet, but in good condition, they are quite expensive these days. With the Grand Soleil 40, I'd seen how impressive the size of the boat can be. So I was aiming for something smaller

x yacht 79

A rather Nordic boat

Richard concedes a soft spot for half-tonners, but it's hard to find them in good condition. In 2021, the market is tight, and Richard is looking over a wide geographical area: "I had identified the X-79, but it's hard to find in France, as it's more common in the Baltic and northern Europe. I saw an advert on the internet in Poland. It seemed to be in good condition and well equipped. So I appointed an expert in Poland and carried out the transaction remotely. The boat was ?16,000 with trailer, to which I added ?2,000 for the survey and transport back to Brittany ."

x yacht 79

An iconic yacht from X Yachts

Visit X-79 the first model of the danish shipyard X Yachts is inseparable from its history, and has greatly contributed to its reputation. Launched in 1979, the 7.96 m long yacht was a great success, with almost 500 units sold between 1979 and 1994, competing with the J24s at the time, with superior habitability. Designed by the shipyard's iconic naval architect, Niels Jeppesen, the boat boasts a surface area of 38.9 m2 upwind and 74 m2 downwind, for just 1.35 T lightship.

The well-protected cockpit features two beautiful cockpit benches for a yacht of her size, and the interior layout follows the usual pattern for boats of this size at the time.

Un cockpit de bonne taille

The saloon seating extends into a coffin berth under the cockpit or a storage area, while a couple can sleep in the forepeak.

x yacht 79

Between the two, at the foot of the mast, you'll find a small sink on one side and a map table on the other, where you can add your camping stove.

x yacht 79

Under the cockpit floor, a vast space is available for storage, making it easy to remove the step from the companionway.

x yacht 79

A high-performance small sailboat

After a first summer enjoying the boat, Richard decided to invest to make his small boat big: " I thought about going bigger, but the draught issues didn't suit me for sailing in Southern Brittany . I added a fixed autopilot , 2 solar panels on the aft hatches and a water cow. And I invested in some nice sails. One of the boat's first qualities is that it's fast in light airs. It works well, and when I'm sailing single-handed, I can get up to 10 knots downwind and quickly make 6 to 7 knots upwind."

Ajout de 2 panneaux solaires

Richard concedes that on a well-rigged sailboat, you have to reduce the canvas pretty quickly. He doesn't see the problem of low and runabout rigging: "You either like it or you don't. I find it interesting to have extra things to sort out and it's not that complicated."

Warm interior

For the yachtsman, the 1980s interior adds to the warmth of the cabin, compared with the white interiors of modern fast yachts. And the cabin meets his expectations of family cruising: "We manage to put 2 children head to toe on the rear bunks and the parents in the front tip, although I have to admit that managing the latter's diapers can be tricky!"

For Richard, the X-79 has the faults of its qualities - lightness and size - but they're not really faults at all! : "Small boat, small problem. My best sailing memories are on my Muscadet and not on my Grand Soleil 40."

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The roundabout at the intersection of State Road 79 and Front Beach Road has finally opened.

According to Panama City Beach officials, the goal of the new intersection is to reduce travel delays and improve pedestrian safety.

There are still some additional items that need to be installed before the project is finished. That includes roadway lighting, landscaping, and irrigation, as well as some median separators.

The project is set to be finished in early 2025, the total cost was about $30.5 million.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four U.S. Army boats, loaded with tons of equipment and steel pier segments, left Virginia on Tuesday, heading to Gaza as part of the U.S. effort to expand the delivery of food and other supplies to starving Palestinians as Israel’s war against Hamas drags on.

The ships pulled out of docks at Joint Base Langley-Eustis and headed down the James River toward the Atlantic Ocean for what could be a month-long voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. There, at a yet-to-be-announced location along the Gaza shore, they will build and begin to operate a floating dock to receive the aid.

Since Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, Israel’s military has battered the territory, killing more than 30,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and creating a humanitarian catastrophe . The U.N. says virtually all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are struggling to find food. But getting humanitarian aid to the area has been difficult, due to the ongoing hostilities and struggles to coordinate with the Israeli military, which has blocked routes and slowed deliveries due to inspections.

The latest Pentagon plan calls for the U.S. military to build what is called a modular causeway system. Off shore, the Army will build a large floating platform where ships can unload large containers of aid. Then the aid will be transferred by the Army to a motorized string of steel causeway sections that have been pushed to the shore.

That pier is expected to be as much as 1,800 feet (550 meters) long, with two lanes, and the Pentagon has said it could accommodate the delivery of more than 2 million meals a day for Gaza residents. Officials have not said who will be unloading the containers and taking the aid ashore. President Joe Biden has said there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza.

On Tuesday, as family members and senior Army commanders watched, about 70 soldiers with the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) pulled away from the docks in four U.S. Army vessels: the USAV Wilson Wharf, USAV Matamoros and USAV Monterrey, all Army landing crafts, and the larger USAV SP4 James A. Loux, a logistics support watercraft.

The brigade’s commander, Army Col. Sam Miller, said about 500 of his soldiers will participate in the mission. All together, Pentagon officials have said about 1,000 U.S. troops will be involved.

Calling it a complicated mission, Miller said the transit will take about a month, but it will depend on weather and any possible high seas. The actual construction, he said, will take about a week, but that also could be hampered by weather. Then it will take additional time to get the delivery process coordinated with those providing the aid and the system up and running. Defense officials have said it will take about two months to get the deliveries started.

The Army’s vessels and maritime capabilities are unique and not as well known as the Navy’s. The last time the 7th Transportation Brigade did a similar mission to construct a large pier was in Haiti in 2010. But it has participated in a number of major military exercises.

“The soldiers here are energized, they’re motivated, they’re excited,” Miller said, adding that the new humanitarian mission “gives them purpose and meaning” and highlights the Army’s watercraft. He noted that just 36 hours after Biden ordered the operation, the first Army vessel — the USAV General Frank S. Besson logistics ship — left Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Saturday.

Miller said a larger Maritime Sealift Command ship will also be leaving Virginia in the coming days, and will be carrying some of the bigger equipment and more of the steel pier segments.
