Tatiana: On board the 80m superyacht with a bow shaped like a bullet

Tatiana, a large, svelte yacht with a bow shaped like a bullet, is heralding a new era for Turkish builder Bilgin Yachts.

Tatiana , Bilgin Yachts’ graceful flagship, is born of a lengthy collaboration between a yacht enthusiast with the goal to build a small superyacht fleet and an ambitious family-owned shipyard rooted on the western shores of the Bosphorus.

It doesn’t seem so long ago that I went to Istanbul’s West Marina to take a look at 48.7-metre Clarity , a modern classic with bowsprit, faux stack and elegant hull lines. She was then the most recent launch from Bilgin, built with a steel hull but harking back to the romantic era of yachting.

Yildirim Bilgen, Bilgin Yachts’ sales manager, was multitasking, a smartphone close at hand as he showed me around the boat and discussed an important expansion – new sheds under construction that Bilgin would use to commission much larger yachts. The metal work would take place about 50 kilometres away in Yalova, across the Sea of Marmara, and the interiors, furniture and metal fittings would be done in another of Bilgin’s facilities in Istanbul.

A few months later, Bilgin revealed something radically different to Clarity , an 80-metre yacht concept with exterior design by Unique Yacht Design . By May 2016, Bilgin announced that the construction was underway, with several of the steel blocks for the hull already completed. “Not only does this superyacht meet the exacting performance standards of the luxury industry but [it] sets the bar for Turkey’s growing high-end yacht sector,” the shipyard said at the time about its forward-looking project.

Bilgen, still multitasking, is at the wheel of his car when I catch up with him to go over the history of the new flagship. The yard’s relationship with the client goes back more than 15 years. Bilgin Yachts delivered the first Tatiana , a 33.5-metre in 2006, followed in 2011 by a 45-metre yacht . Not too long after taking delivery of his second yacht, the owner expressed interest in discussing a larger project.

Bilgen travelled to meet the client and his team with naval architect Emrecan Özgün, founder of Unique Yacht Design. That meeting did not result in a new order, but it established a fruitful working relationship between Özgün and the shipyard. “We have been working with Bilgin Yachts since 2013,” says Özgün, whose passion for car design merged with his education in naval architecture and engineering to open doors in yacht design. He collaborated with Bilgin on 46.8-metre Giaola-Lu , 47.5-metre Nerissa (now Starburst III ) and 47.5-metre Lilium (now Snow 5 ) . Meanwhile, conversations with the owner of Tatiana continued and by 2015, he was ready to discuss a brand new project.

“As the customer knew my experience in the naval architecture and shipbuilding engineering area, he told me his expectations in terms of performance, comfort and productivity,” Özgün says. “Later on, we had a discussion about the general layout prepared for him. The most important point to him was the exterior design.”

In order to illustrate what he liked and disliked, he invited him outside of his office. “We went out on a terrace overlooking the Dubai Marina. He showed me a few yachts there and said that he doesn’t want a yacht with a high bulky appearance like these.” What he wanted was a yacht that was “sleek, aggressive, sexy,” he says, with a “bullet-like appearance.”

The owner was happy to trade volume for elegance, confirms Brahma Advani, the owner’s representative. Aside from an attractive exterior, among his priorities were a sizable pool in the beach club, a couple of cabins that could accommodate staff or guests, according to the yacht’s private or commercial use, compliance with IMO Tier III emission standards even if the rules did not yet mandate it at the time of keel laying, long cruise capability and low decibel levels for ultimate comfort.

From the get-go, they also had charter in mind. “The owner wanted to use the yacht for special conferences or board meetings besides using it for his and his family’s pleasure and also occasionally deploy the yacht on the charter market. His ultimate goal is to build a good size fleet of superyachts,” Advani says.

Back in Turkey, Unique Yacht Design worked around the clock for about three months, Özgün says. The resulting design was very close to Tatiana – a long hull with a narrow beam and attractive curves atop a sporty profile ending in a sharp bow. It also met the client’s desire for a fuel-efficient boat thanks to a displacement form developed by Unique Yacht Design, which was tank tested at the Maritime Advanced Research Centre in Gdansk, Poland.

“The Unique Displacement Hull Form doesn’t have dynamic trim at low or high speeds,” Özgün says. This form’s stability equates to efficiency. “This helped us reach 260 litres fuel consumption in total while cruising with two engines and a generator at the speed of 12 knots,” he says. This also means a range of around 7,500 nautical miles. However, if speed is required, with engines at 85 per cent load, CFD simulation and technical trials show that Tatiana can exceed 19 knots.

To meet the newest Tier III mandates that restrict NOx emissions in many areas of the world, Bilgin worked with both Rolls-Royce and Hug Engineering to come up with the most effective SCR solution available for the MTU 4000 series engines and gensets. Incorporating environmentally friendly features, incidentally, is high on the shipyard’s agenda for all new builds.

As far as its appearance goes, it has a long and pointed bow, “like a bullet” and a generous aft deck section, home to a stunning feature – in essence, a two-level beach club. The yacht’s lines incorporate wing stations that form an interesting architectural feature at the bridge level and the flush decks conceal hatches for two Castoldi tenders, four Jet Skis and mooring equipment, leaving nothing but a seamless expanse of deck forward. Emergency rafts are also hidden from view on the upper deck. A dual colour scheme brings lines into a pinch at the forward end, slimming the yacht and enhancing the pointed forward end, without sacrificing views through generous windows in the cabins and lounges. The required mast is telescopic and recedes out of view.

Although a lot of attention was paid to the aesthetics, the yacht’s operational side was not forgotten. For instance, the designer included two doors that allow the crew to oversee anchor operations and a service door for loading and unloading supplies. In total, the yacht has 10 shell doors.

Özgün says the owner contributed a great deal of ideas and he had listened carefully. “I was sure that the customer would agree with the shipyard after our presentation and so he did. He really loved every detail of the design,” he says. The size, naval architecture, appearance and the majority of the layout being settled, there remained the matter of the interior design and finessing the outer decks.

Bilgin has enjoyed a good working relationship with H2 Yacht Design . They have collaborated on five projects since 2012 and Bilgen introduced them to the client. The pursuit of pleasure is what yachting is all about and accordingly Tatian a’s interior is, says H2’s principal, Jonny Horsfield, “pretty hedonistic”. The focus was on impressive guest areas with multiple entertainment spaces, several bars, lounges, a formal dining room for up to 16 guests, a cinema as well as a private owner’s space with an office – all of this within a fairly slim envelope. “The styling is aggressive and sleek which meant that the interior had to work within this footprint yet offer everything the client wished for,” Horsfield says.

The yacht’s long lines are the first to catch the eye, but it does not take long to realise that the 110-square-metre beach club is one of the yacht’s main attractions. “This is the epicentre of the yacht and is directly connected to the main saloon via a dramatic staircase,” Horsfield says. This leisure space encompasses two pools, one above the other and two bars, one exterior on the upper level, the other on the lower deck at the forward end of the pool.

The largest pool is 8.5 metres long and nearly three metres wide (with a depth of about 1.2 metres) and occupies the lion’s share of the lower deck. When the yacht is anchored, the aft door and two side terraces unfold. “It emphasises the close connection between interior spaces and the marine environment,” Horsfield says. More light comes from reveals in the walls and small LED lights shining like tiny stars over a lounge adjacent to a shell door. Glass columns, Carrara marble and a backlit blue agate floor near the bar complement the teak deck that surrounds the pool. A cosy massage room with another shell door, for a massage en plein air , a shower and a steam room round out the luxurious space.

Backlit panels add drama to the eye-catching staircase in Macassar wood and Carrara marble that leads from the beach club directly to the entrance of the main saloon, one deck above. Here, the second pool, a large spa pool, features two skylights at the bottom, allowing natural light to shine down below. It’s worth noting that the water from the pool and spa pool is recyclable and can be stored in a heated holding tank.

In terms of design style, the owner wanted something modern and warm, Horsfield says. “The theme of the interior is based on a light but rich palette while the design is definitely crisp and contemporary in feel. There is an overall stunning interior that complements the modern exterior perfectly,” he says. “The design can be described as layers of modern luxury. We wanted to achieve an open airy feel for a clean, sleek look, so the best option was to use light and textured luxury materials.”

Accordingly, the interior is filled with silks, lots of textures – from carved carpets, many sourced from Stepevi, to panels worked with CNC machines – and accents of stainless steel and polished bronze. Light plays an important role in enhancing shapes and creating interesting shadows. Stones, such as onyx, are used in unconventional ways, for instance as headboards in several guest cabins.

Despite Tatiana’s relatively modest volume, the ceiling height is generous, 2.25 metres on the main deck and up to 2.6 metres in areas of the owner’s deck. This is not something that’s expected given the yacht’s lean exterior appearance. “All visitors are surprised when they get on the deck,” Özgün says.

This generous clearance allows for some nice features, such as a glimmering chandelier above the dining table, designed by H2 and made by Lasvit with glass rods and polished steel. Another renowned glass artisan from Bohemia, Crystal Caviar, made the light fixture in the staircase leading to the accommodations. The feature wall in the dining saloon is made with semi-precious amethyst. Counterbalancing these rich elements are more muted materials, such as European oak floors in a white finish and a light Tabu Tay with a straight grain. Details in Macassar ebony and Legnoquattro veneer on furniture add contrast. “We used quite a lot of Tabu,” Horsfield says. “The advantage for us is guaranteed quality and consistent colour, particularly if you go for a light finish.”

The furniture is either custom designed by H2 or sourced from brands such as Minotti and Boca do Lobo. Bilgin built the interiors and all fixed furnishings.

The upper deck is divided between the bridge by Simrad, captain’s cabin, officer’s cabin, staff cabin, the owner’s office and the upper saloon. This space has a welcoming surround of seats framed by decorative columns, a stage with room for a piano and a games room with a pool table by Porsche Design and, of course, a bar. The owner enjoys privacy on the top deck, accessible via a lift, with a lounge, an extensive wardrobe framing a private bath, large cabin, spa pool and terrace accessed through sliding doors. Guests are accommodated on both the main deck and the lower deck, where a gym, sauna and cinema are located.

The forward end of the lower deck and a great portion of the tank deck are dedicated to the crew quarters, crew lounges and service space, including ample cold and dry stores and a generous laundry.

“Our purpose was to create a yacht which is functional, easy to build, with all the comforts and luxury of a superyacht while having a beautiful look,” Özgün says. From the looks of it, they have ticked all boxes. And with this bullet-shaped yacht, Bilgin Yachts has hit more than one of its targets, raising its profile up high and proving itself a worthy contender in the superyacht segment.

In addition to her beautiful, flowing lines, the 80m Bilgin mega yacht TATIANA excelled during sea trials along the coastline of Istanbul, showcasing performance, seaworthiness and comfort while cruising. TATIANA, the largest yacht ever built by a Turkish shipyard to date, is currently getting ready for her delivery scheduled for this summer. During the first sea trials to test her twin MTU engines, she has delivered as expected, reaching over 19 knots of top speed with a smooth driving behaviour.

TATIANA is characterised by striking modern lines and luxurious interiors that predominantly use a contrasting combination of rich Macassar ebony, eucalyptus and a great amount of marble. She is the first of the brand-new 263 series by Bilgin with sleek and sexy lines and ultra-luxurious amenities on board.

The CEO of Bilgin Yachts and the Founder of Unique Yacht Design , Emrecan Özgün CEO tells about Tatiana: “With her design and comfort elements, the Bilgin 263 is truly one-of-a-kind. We created a very attractive yacht with a sleek and sexy profile while avoiding a high dosage of design clichés. The increase in living areas normally results in bulky designs. The Bilgin 263 has a design attitude that will dominate the yachting sector around the world. This will clearly make her a trendsetter among steel-aluminium superyachts of today.”

Modern and inviting interiors were created by H2 Design offering a glamorous setting and a welcoming ambience. Jonny Horsfield of H2 Design Ltd was personally in charge of the interior details, based on the owner’s very clear concept and vision, boasting a modern layout and spacious living areas, including a massive spa and beach club. Both interiors and the exterior areas are characterised by a rich, modern colour palette.

In addition to TATIANA, Bilgin is also building additional two Bilgin 263 series yachts, including the Bilgin 263-II hull that has already been sold and is to be launched in 2021 and a third one that will be delivered to her owner in 2022. The series is known for its eco-friendliness, with the vessels being fitted with a special exhaust system that provides 100% air emissions. She is powered by two 2,550kW engines, reaching the already mentioned top speed of 19+ knots while cruising at a comfortable speed of 12 knots, keeping her fuel consumption at 250litres per hour. She is constructed to IMO Tier III certification and is currently considered as the most environmentally friendly superyacht in her size.

The third hull of the series, Bilgin NB78 superyacht will feature a totally new layout and will be moved for outfitting to West Istanbul Marina, while the construction of the new 85m mega yacht Bilgin 280 is planned for May 2020 and delivery scheduled for 2023. In addition, there is an on spec project of a 74m superyacht Bilgin 220 which is due to be launched in 2022 while a 50m project is also in a planning stage and to be constructed with a launch in 2022. Both yachts are designed by Unique Yacht Design, with contemporary lines, vast interiors and great exterior areas.

Extraordinary 80m Bilgin mega yacht TATIANA excels during sea trials

In addition to her beautiful, flowing lines, the 80m Bilgin mega yacht TATIANA excelled during sea trials along the coastline of Istanbul, showcasing performance, seaworthiness and comfort while cruising. TATIANA, the largest yacht ever built by a Turkish shipyard to date, is currently getting ready for her delivery scheduled for this summer. During the first sea trials to test her twin MTU engines, she has delivered as expected, reaching over 19 knots of top speed with a smooth driving behaviour.

She is the first of the brand-new 263 series by Bilgin with sleek and sexy lines and ultra-luxurious amenities on board.

The CEO of Bilgin Yachts and the Founder of Unique Yacht Design, Emrecan Özgün CEO tells about Tatiana: “With her design and comfort elements, the Bilgin 263 is truly one-of-a-kind.

Is This The Most Beautiful Superyacht In The World ? Bilgin’s 80m “TATIANA”

80m superyacht TATIANA by Bilgin Yachts

Luxury yacht TATIANA was launched by Turkish shipyard Bilgin Yachts in February 2020, and at 80m/263ft it is the largest build from the shipyard to date. As the second Bilgin 263 model is sold and the third enters construction, it’s now possible to see the recently released imagery for TATIANA with reveals what has made this luxury yacht an instant success on the market even in such a tumultuous year.

The naval architecture and exterior styling both come from Unique Yacht Design, while H2 Yacht Design created her appealing interiors. The steel hull and aluminium superstructure have a masculine appearance created by sharp lines and a more traditional colour scheme of dark and light grey, most often associated with military vessels. With the increase in on board space comes a tendency to create a broad and bulky hull, however by elongating the deck areas M/Y TATIANA keeps a sleek and stylish profile that maximises space utilisation, particularly when adding swimming pools to the decks.

Outdoor living is prized, allowing the Owner and guests to savour every moment cruising in such destinations as the Mediterranean charter grounds, taking in the beauty of the Turkish Riviera and the Dalmatian Coast before cruising on to the heart of the summer social scene along the French Riviera.

Superyacht TATIANA is designed with large dockside gatherings in mind: Guests will disembark onto the large swim platform and enter the magnificent beach club within. The tenders and water toys are instead stored in the bow section beneath a flush foredeck cover, ensuring that space can still be used for such functions as exercise and sunbathing.

Beach Club

The spectacular beach club by night

The main deck aft, meanwhile, hosts a desirable swimming pool of 8.5m/27.9ft in length and a depth of 1.4m/4.6ft – perfect for cooling off on hot summer days or exercising after dark when the water toys are safely stowed away. Although there are sunbeds running the length of both sides of the pool, the group might also like to rest and dry off on the sofa/sunbeds farther forward in the alfresco lounge area. Here, there is quick access to the bar where the talented crew can create a range of colourful cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages to suit all ages and occasions.

The upper deck aft is the main alfresco dining area and offers an extensive dining table with a bar to port and aft-facing seating behind to enjoy an aperitif or a nightcap while watching the blazing sunset. Canvas shades are available to keep off the midday sun and light sea spray.

The Owner’s deck is divided into fore and aft sections that also have optional canvas shades. The aft section is dedicated to lounging and sunbathing, with a plush sunbed along the stern and close to the glass sliding doors to the interior a sofa on both sides with a coffee table in between. The forward deck area is fitted with a sofa/sunbed on both sides and a forward Jacuzzi that will be coveted place to unwind while having uninterrupted views of the stunning Ionian Islands white cliffs, the regattas at  Porto Cervo  in  Sardinia  and the amazing cities of the  Cote d’Azur .

Large windows and private terraces connect the interior and exterior spaces: At night, the warm glow of the lighting across the decks makes her as much of a show-stopper as a welcome home on the water during an extensive cruise. It is this lighting which draws guests into the understated elegance of the contemporary interiors by H2 Yacht Design, and the beach club is likely to be one of the first spaces guests and visitors enter by. The light and spacious interior are achieved using Macassar veneer and light eucalyptus. The top-quality marble is back-lit to bring out its details, further complemented by carved stone and emphasised textures.

Beach Club interior

A swimming pool runs through the centre of the aft beach club section, further illuminated by glass panels in the swimming pool on the main deck above. Farther forward, the beach club opens up to reveal a bar, plush lounges with top-quality TV entertainment and audio systems, a hammam and a spa massage room. Fold-down terraces further extend the space for sunbathing and lounging while simultaneously opening the interior up to the sunshine and fresh sea air.

Elsewhere on board there is an ambient cinema that has dark textures walls and two rows of matching silvery sofas. A coffee table also presents the possibility of using this space as another quiet lounge for close conversation.

Gym

The fully-equipped gym has a running machine, rowing machine and a range of free weights amongst its workout choices, and a widescreen TV will provide entertainment and motivation in the calm, bright white surroundings.

The main deck salon uses pale cream tones, slate blue and silvery mirror surfaces to create an ambience associated with the open sky. This is reflected in the colour scheme and subject matter of the surrounding artwork, adding to the serenity when dining beneath the sensational custom chandelier, or planning for the day ahead on the sumptuous sofas or armchairs. A widescreen TV separates the dining and lounging areas, and it can be viewed from both sides so that the group never misses a moment of the latest news and sports.

The guest accommodation is just as beautiful and pristine in colour choice and furnishings. There are 8 en-suite cabins spread across the decks to sleep up to 14 guests: 1 Master suite, 3 VIP staterooms and 4 further guest cabins comprised of doubles and twins.

The Master suite is placed on the Owner’s deck and has its own private office as well as a massive stately bedroom in white, grey, dark teal and gold. The king-sized bed takes centre stage, however, there is also a day bed for reading and unwinding beside the window, a massive widescreen TV integrated into the port and starboard walls, a seating area with table for casual meals and drinks, all with fantastic views out onto the aft terrace. The en-suite bathroom has everything the occupants could desire, with twin sinks, a bathtub and shower within the well-proportioned interior.

All three VIP staterooms are situated on the main deck and have queen-sized beds within each voluminous room. The windows are almost full-height, granting the occupants excellent views and natural lighting while maintaining privacy within. A widescreen TV is placed in the wall opposite the bed, and the storage is integrated seamlessly into the surroundings. The en-suite bathroom is finished in marble and has twin sinks and bathtub with shower.

Lower Deck Guest Twin Cabin

The remaining guest cabins on the lower deck enjoy an abundance of space as well as cutting edge amenities and en-suite facilities, making these bedrooms just as much of a tranquil haven after a busy day.

The crew of 23 are accommodated on the lower deck, and their areas have received just as much attention to detail. There is a crew mess for meals and downtime, and the team of professional chefs have plenty of space in the cutting-edge galley to prepare stunning creations for everyday meals or to mark a special celebration.

The engineering is just as impressive with a pair of engines and a generator producing a top speed of 19 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and an extensive range of more than 6,000 nautical miles. The fuel capacity draws on 155,000 litres and has an economical fuel consumption of approximately 250 litres per hour.

Luxury yacht TATIANA is built to IMO Tier III certification and at the time of writing is the cleanest yacht in her class: The special exhaust system aboard M/Y TATIANA produces 100% clean air emissions that further enhances her eco-friendly credentials for a greener future for travel.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

mega yacht tatiana

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

mega yacht tatiana

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

mega yacht tatiana

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

mega yacht tatiana

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

mega yacht tatiana

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

mega yacht tatiana

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

mega yacht tatiana

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Russia’s presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov and his wife, the former ice dancer Tatiana Navka

Questions over lifestyle of Putin's aide and his wife's $10m property empire

Exclusive: Revelations revive concerns over couple’s wealth and potential benefits of close relationship with Russian president

The wife of Vladimir Putin’s press spokesman, Dmitry Peskov , has accumulated a property empire worth well over $10m (£7.7m) and is designing a riverside palace on an exclusive Moscow estate, the Guardian can reveal.

The project is being overseen by a Russian tycoon who has previously done business with Donald Trump, documents show.

The disclosures are likely to raise fresh questions about Peskov’s wealth and how he and his wife, Tatiana Navka, seem able to afford a super-affluent lifestyle.

Russian opposition leaders have repeatedly criticised Peskov’s lifestyle since his celebrity wedding in 2015 to Navka, a champion ice dancer who won gold for Russia in the 2006 Winter Olympics. A Russian citizen, she lived and trained for more than a decade in the US.

Though wealthy in her own right, research led by the investigative unit Dossier Center , together with the Guardian, suggests the couple’s assets and spending are greater than has been reported.

In October 2014, Navka bought a state-of-the-art property in Rublyovka, the forested area west of Moscow that is home to Putin, Russia’s president, and many from the country’s ruling elite.

Tatiana Navka property

The house in the village of Tretya Okhota is built on some of the most expensive real estate in Russia. In December 2012, it was offered for sale at $15.6m .

But documents seen by the Guardian show Navka purchased the entire plot in October 2014 for 300m roubles ($7.1m) – an $8.5m discount. The price included two pieces of land costing $3.5m. Navka furnished the house in 2013-15, consulting her husband on everything from gym equipment to choice of eco-sauna. Items ordered from a Cyprus boutique cost more than €500,000.

The property’s seller is listed as Timur Khaldarov, a little-known figure who ran a charitable sporting and arts foundation , according to Russian media .

The foundation’s founder is Alisher Usmanov, one of Russia’s most powerful and politically influential oligarchs. Usmanov was until recently a major shareholder in Arsenal football club and in 2018 the UK’s eighth richest man.

Khaldarov said he was independently wealthy. He works for Metalloinvest , Usmanov’s mining company. He said he met Navka before her second marriage to Peskov, when his daughter wanted to try figure skating. He said he could not remember the name of the acquaintance who introduced them.

The house was “too small” for his family, and so he sold it to Navka in a falling market, he said. “There was no special discount. I was paid the market value. Why consider it a gift?” he added. Usmanov, his boss, was not aware of the deal and did not influence it, he told Moscow TV channel Rain .

Navka said she bought the property at the market rate, at a time when real estate prices “began to plummet”. She was unaware of the 2012 price. “I have been working for a long time. I earn money and pay taxes on it. Everything else is my personal matter,” she said in an email.

Neither she nor her husband had a “business relationship” with any of Russia’s “major entrepreneurs”, she added.

Usmanov confirmed he “worked closely” with Khaldarov but said he had no interest in the Tretya Okhota house or knowledge of transactions. There were “well-known fluctuations” in the Moscow property market at the time, he said.

According to Dossier , Peskov and Navka made plans for an even grander mansion on an exclusive plot in the Moscow region belonging to the tycoon and developer Aras Agalarov .

In March 2018, Agalarov personally approved the building proposal, on a site called Rechnaya #27 , documents show. The plot is situated inside a gated housing estate for Russia’s ultra-wealthy , on the bank of a river, and featuring a golf course and private beach.

Documents show in 2017 the couple hired a firm of American architects, Zampolin & Associates , based in Westwood, New Jersey, to draw up a new mini-palace known as the Yanavka Residence.

The firm’s founder, Bob Zampolin, flew to Moscow to discuss the designs with Navka. His proposal features 2,400 metres of living space, a separate entrance for staff, a pool, spa, hot tub, sauna, great room and library.

The project was active in mid-2018. Its current status is unclear. Last week, there was no sign of building work. Asked if the plan was going ahead, Navka replied: “This does not concern you.” She said her relationship with Zampolin was personal and “wasn’t connected with plans to acquire property anywhere”.

Navka’s latest photoshoot for a Russian magazine took place at the Agalarov Estate hotel.

The revelations are likely to provoke fresh questions over Peskov’s wealth and any potential benefits he and his wife have gained from his close relationship with Putin.

Dossier is funded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky , an exiled critic of Putin. Its revelations will fuel questions about Navka’s finances.

Since winning Olympic gold, Navka has enjoyed lucrative TV and advertising deals, including for a brand of yoghurt. She has had a primetime ice dancing show on Russia’s state-run pro-Kremlin Channel One.

Inside view of Tatiana Navka’s property in the village Tretya Okhota.

She appears to have bought her Rubylovka property using a 300m-rouble private loan – the entire purchase price. Asked about the loan, Navka repeated: “This does not concern you.”

Before the sale in February 2014, Navka opened three Swiss bank accounts, documents show. The accounts were with the Zurich branch of the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg and in dollars, euros and roubles.

She also set up an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands, a tax haven. The company, Carina Global Assets, was named in the Panama Papers leak .

At that time Navka denied having any offshore companies or accounts: “I don’t know who could have done it. I would like myself to understand what happened.”

Navka also has a portfolio of other high-end properties. They include an elite flat in Moscow’s central Yakimanka district, worth $4m, and given to her by the state as a reward for her sporting success. It is being extensively revamped.

She also has a $2m flat in the Moscow suburb of Polyanka. In 2015, she acquired a property under a lease of 49 years from the Moscow city government.

The pavilion in a Soviet-era park known as VDNkH was to be developed into an ice rink and sporting arena. The project was never implemented, Navka said. She also owns a small flat in the Crimean resort of Yalta.

The couple both have children from previous relationships, and a daughter born in August 2014. They have had family holidays in the Maldives, Dubai, and the French ski resort of Courchevel.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny

Their spending has come under persistent questioning from Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader. In 2015, he accused Peskov of “illegal enrichment” after he and Navka reportedly honeymooned on the world’s most expensive yacht.

Peskov was spotted at his wedding ceremony in Sochi wearing a $625,000 watch . Peskov said the watch was a present from his bride. He also received an inheritance, he said.

Navalny has urged the Kremlin to examine the apparent discrepancy between Peskov’s official income and his ostentatious spending, so far without success. One theory is that Navka has on occasions benefited from her husband’s links to Russian oligarchs who are supportive of Putin.

Navalny has previously alleged that Usmanov used a charitable foundation to gift Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s prime minister, an $85m mega-villa in greater Moscow. Usmanov vehemently denies this . A Moscow court found in Usmanov’s favour.

Khaldarov said Navka had rented his former home for a year and a half before she bought it, paying all appropriate taxes. Khaldarov was a deputy director of Usmanov’s Art, Science and Sport charity foundation .

Peskov has been a confidant of Putin for 20 years and is regarded as one of the most powerful people in Russia. He was involved in discussions over a property deal in Moscow, held with Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who has admitted he lied about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Cohen told Congress the plan fizzled out in January 2016. He now says discussions went on for another six months and included a possible trip by Trump to Moscow.

Cohen emailed Peskov asking for help – and held a 20-minute phone call with one of his assistants. Peskov later invited Cohen to the St Petersburg economic forum , and offered to facilitate high-level meetings with Putin and Medvedev.

Peskov and Agalarov appear in the dossier compiled by the former MI6 officer Christopher Steele. It alleges the Kremlin holds compromising material on Trump, some of it allegedly collected during Trump’s 2013 visit to Moscow for the Miss Universe contest , which Agalarov hosted. Agalarov paid Trump about $14m in fees for putting on the show. Trump owned the rights.

The dossier says Peskov was in charge of kompromat on Trump and Hillary Clinton, as part of Moscow’s wider effort to influence the 2016 US presidential election in Trump’s favour. The special counsel Robert Mueller is examining alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
