Blue Cruise in Turkey

The evocative term 'Blue Cruise' describes the marvellous cruise taken for several days along the bluest, clearest of seas along the Turkish coast. It covers the whole rich experience of bay hopping, swimming, snorkelling, walking ashore in the forest and on the hillsides, visiting villages, exploring the stones of ancient sites, but above all, living and relaxing on a beautiful wooden boat away from it all.

The Blue Cruise was the name coined for the traditional cruise route along the South West coast of Turkey between Bodrum and Antalya , famous for its distance far from modern life. With unspoiled nature and the most remarkably clear clean turquoise blue seas of the Aegean and Mediterranean these are some of the safest waters to swim in the world, tideless and calm, with the mostly friendly and benign inhabitants such as dolphins, turtles, shy fish and wary birds.

The Blue Cruise is synonymous with the Bodrum gulet , and really has to be experienced in those beautifully shaped, spacious, wooden boats crafted in Bodrum by boatbuilders who have learnt their craft from previous generations. The generous deck space has been adapted to provide the ideal sunbathing, lounging and dining space on deck. Modern technology now allows for unimaginable degrees of luxury compared to the basic fishing and spongediving boats used by the early pioneers of the 'Blue Cruise'.

The actual name was coined by Azra Erhat , the Turkish woman writer and translator who was one of the pioneering group of artists and writers who came to Bodrum to sail with the writer Cevat Şakır Kabaağaçlı. He had first been sent into exile in Bodrum in the early 1920’s from Istanbul when Bodrum was considered to be at the ends of the earth, so remote with poor road access. But Cevat Şakır loved Bodrum and first talked the fishermen of Bodrum into taking him, then his friends out on their small wooden boats to explore the coast so then he came to be called by his pen name ‘The Fisherman of Halicarnassus’. Erhat described these journeys in her 1962 travel guide book " Mavi Yolculuk " (Blue Cruise), and as she was translating Homer and other classics into Turkish, she and her fellow travellers were fascinated by the rich trove of remains of ancient cities and civilisations along the Gulf of Gokova . The 'Blue Cruise' was first an expedition by boat exploring the history and nature of the coast.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

• You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
• Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
• Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

• The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
• Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
• Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
• Check the ages of other passengers when booking

How can I thank you?! The "Blue Cruise" gulet and Captain Ali were better than I imagined. EVERYONE had a magnificent time. Many said it was a trip of a life time. A life changer. They were so happy to be introduced to Turkey both in Istanbul and along the southern coast by boat. Many want to go back to get to know Turkey better. All think the Turkish people are extremely friendly and are especially grateful to you. The gulet "Blue Cruise" was in pristine condition. My friend Charles Perini who does a lot of very fine rebuilding of houses and owned a wooden boat, said that he had never seen such a good varnish job. Every thing looked brand new from the covering on the cushions to the deck floor to the ropes. The crew was constantly cleaning the gulet. And the two younger men, Jacob and Ukfar (spelling) never let an empty glass or cup of coffee sit for more than a minute. They were always smiling, especially Jacob. Hussein was chopping vegetable, etc., from morning till night and produced a variety of wonderful dishes. The second week menu was even somewhat different from the first week. Fish three times a week. We cannot eat the tomatoes available here in the US after all those Turkish fresh tomatoes. And then of course there is Captain Ali!!!! I loved him. I had asked you to find not only a good gulet but a captain who knew the coast. Early on I told Ali that we really would like to be anchored for lunch and the night is places where there were less people and gulets. He found the most amazing little coves. We were able to go swimming and snorkeling several times a day in coves to ourselves. Also, he got us to places of interest before the crowds, such as Cleopatra Island. Smart man. And he has a sense of humor. And he was really sweet with Elsa, my four year old grand daughter. As you know, Elsa and Ira had a birthday which we wanted to celebrate on Sunday the 23rd. The crew decorated a cake and big platter and Ali gave Elsa a present.... a pretty little bracelet. Magical. 29.07.2013

GUMUSLUK is the perfect place for a quiet port experience. It has amazing views and serves up delicious fish. Also, snorkeling is the best way to see the underwater ruins at Gümüşlük.

BITEZ is for a bigger and more elite crowd, and it is the perfect place for sailing students who are just starting out.

TURGUTREIS has a new harbor, and its shallow coast makes it a great place for young children.

DATCA is a great place to rent a car. It is a pretty town with almond trees and bougainvillea that has been painted white. It has a lot of places to eat and drink, most of which serve fish and traditional Turkish food.

HISARONU is a beautiful place with pine-covered mountains all around it. It is a great place to eat, walk, and see sights in the area.

MARMARIS is a beautiful port where the Mediterranean, the Aegean, and Marmaris all meet. Icmeler is much greener than the middle of Marmaris, with wide streets lined with trees and a Yesil feel.

On the coast of the Bozburun Peninsula, there are olive groves, pine woods, lots of fresh food, and tasty local wines.

DALYAN is a small town on the River Delta on the south-west coast of Turkey. You can take a boat from Dalyan to Iztuzu Beach. It is a beautiful beach with shallow water in the sea. The ruins of the old city of Kaunos have a Greek theater and the Temple of Apollo. You can take a boat or walk to the ruins of the old city of Kaunos.

SARIGERME is becoming more popular with tourists. It is surrounded by pine trees and has a fine sand beach. Great for trips with the family.

GOCEK has a great marina, high-end restaurants and shops, and is a great place to stop after a long day at sea.

FETHIYE is a place with beautiful nature. There are beaches, secret coves, and mooring areas where no one is around. This place is very popular and well-known for its tours of the Twelve Islands, turquoise coast in Patara, and diving in Fethiye, Turkey.

The most popular beach near Fethiye is called the Blue Lagoon and is called Oludeniz. It is also a very popular place to go skydiving.

KALKAN ; along the coast, there are a lot of high-end resorts. There is a lot of Old World culture in the town, and the traditional Turkish food is delicious.

KAS is a small, peaceful port city that is almost intact.

KEKOVA is a small island made of rocks that you can get to by boat. There are some great Lycian villages and cities that have sunk in this area. It is a great place for snorkeling and resting near Simena Castle. Patara is the largest beach in Turkey. It is 22 kilometers long and has white sand. Dunes and Mimosa bushes help support the beach.

ANTALYA : the sea and sun during the day, and fun at night. It is called the Turkish Riviera, and there are many places to visit there. First, though, picture yourself on a boat in a bay with a beautiful view of Antalya. The golden sand beach of Lara is about 12 km east of the city, and the pebble beach of Konyaalti is about 12 km west. Along the ocean, there are also places like Patara Beach, the Belek Golf Center, and ruins. This is a very diverse vacation area with small towns.

Many tourist areas in Antalya, such as Olympos, Kemer, Phoenicia, Alanya, Kas, Manavgat, Side, Kekova, Kalkan, and Belek, offer more than what the coast says.

The boat was very comfortable but even more important the crew very pleasant and professional. They were always willing to please us with a positive attitude. The hostess was super and also the chef was very good, every member of the crew was. Thank you for the jet ski , I must say that the water toys make a great different when you travel with the children! We might consider to re do the experience next year. V.B.
