Introducing The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

One of watchmaking's most charming complications returns to frederique constant..

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

In 1997, Frederique Constant introduced a regatta timer for the first time (and until now, the only time) in its collections. The regatta timer may be one of the most specific, if not the most specific, of all complications. A regatta timer is used to count down the amount of time remaining before the competing yachts are allowed to cross the start line during a yacht race; the start line is defined by an imaginary line drawn between two buoys. Sailboats cannot, unlike race cars, simply wait at a starting line, as they are constantly in motion thanks to the wind. Instead, racing yachts maneuver behind the start line, seeking to correctly anticipate the moment that the starting signal is given (traditionally a gun or cannon shot) at which point they can legally cross the line without incurring a penalty for starting too early.

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

This situation means that one of the most exciting parts of a regatta, are the moments during which the clock is counting down from the warning gun to the actual starting gun, when the yachts are maneuvering for the most advantageous possible position. The warning gun is often fired, by custom, five minutes before the starting gun so when skippers hear it go off, they know they have that amount of time before the line can be crossed. The regatta timer is set up to allow instant and intuitive read-off of the amount of time remaining before the start. Each circle represents one minute, and as the colors change in each circle in succession, skippers can easily see how much time remains, without resorting to the often difficult-to-read sub-registers of a traditional chronograph.

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

It is a complication whose utility outside the context of a regatta I have always struggled to envision (counting down a five minute egg?) but its very specialized purpose combined with its idiosyncratic design, give regatta timers a unique appeal among complicated watches. There will be three versions of the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown launched in the US market, which will be a gold PVD model with a blue dial, a steel model with grey dial, and a two-tone model on a two-tone bracelet, with a guilloché pattern.

The regatta timer is both an easy complication to dismiss, but it's also an easy complication to like, if you give it a chance. On the one hand, if you're not a yacht skipper or a regatta official, there is probably not a whole lot of use you're going to get out it. On the other hand, it is so charming and so visually punchy, and so very much a product of a time when watches were practical necessities, and made to fit every need and budget, that you can't help but fall in love with it a little bit. I have never had the pleasure of owning a regatta timer but I have had a chance to spend some time with several different models, including a vintage Heuer Regatta, and there is something irresistibly watchable about seeing those little circles change color as the minutes count down.

Whether you ever get a chance to use these for their intended purpose, they're great looking watches with a real connection to both horological history, and to Frederique Constant's own history as well. They're also very attractively priced, considering that you're getting an interesting take on an unusual complication – the most expensive (and I think most handsome) version, in rose gold plate, is $3495 ($3195 for the steel model).

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches, frederique constant.

The Frederique Constant SA company is established in Geneva, Switzerland, in its current form in 1988 by the Dutch entrepreneur Peter Constant Stas and his wife Aletta Francoise Frédérique Stas-Bax. The brand is involved in all the stages of watch production, from initial design to final assembly. Their first collection was launched in 1992.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the Olympic Committee changed the countdown system for starting yacht races. With an increase in the number of boat categories over the years, the time for successive starts had become too long. So it was decided to reduce the intervening time gap from 5 – 10 to 3 – 6 minutes. The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer   was the first watch to integrate these new racing rules.

Frederique Constant developed their new Yacht Timer quartz movement together with Herbert Derksen of Tack and Gybe International ( TNG ), the former helmsman of the Dutch Olympic team’s Tornado sailboat. It is fitted with a countdown function that can be set at 10, 6, 5 or 3 minutes, shown by the coloured balls as the earlier automatic regatta movements have. Besides the visible going of the countdown it is also audible. Both Frederique Constant and TNG have patented the new movement, you can download the patent here .

In 2019, some 20 years after the launch of the first Yachttimer series, the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer , the brand introduces a new Regatta series: the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown . This time the watches are driven by a new developed automatic movement, caliber FC-380.

In the dial between 10 and 2 o’clock the well known 5 dots showing the elapsed minutes during the countdown. The indicator disk is coloured blue – white – orange, or white – blue – orange, depending on the color of the dial (navy blue or silver).

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

On the Regatta Countdown from Frederique Constant, each passing minute fills one of five circles in the top half of the dial, first from white to blue, and then from blue to orange. If you’re part of a crew on a racing yacht, you can glance at your wrist while you’re raising or lowering your sails to hold or advance your position and have a pretty good idea of exactly how much time is left before the race officially begins. While this is certainly a niche complication, you don’t need to be a regatta participant to take advantage of a timer like this. Anything that takes 10 minutes or less, or that you want to take 10 minutes or less, can be timed with this complication.

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

The other half of the Yacht Timer collection is the new Yacht Timer GMT, which in this iteration is an elegant take on one of the sportiest complications. If the Regatta Countdown calls to mind the excitement and fast action of a sailboat race, the Yacht Timer GMT makes one think of a long distance voyage where tracking multiple time zones might be a necessity. Of course, and this goes without saying, a yacht is not required here either. But Frederique Constant is tapping into an idea of an aesthetic with this small collection, giving their customers a hint of luxury in a package that’s actually quite practical.

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

A close examination of the press images provided reveals a few interesting characteristics of these watches beyond the notable complications. First, the dials are incredibly intricate and contribute a great deal to making us believe that we’re looking at the slightly elevated instruments Frederique Constant is selling. The hobnail finish on each of these watches is engrossing and really well done. Secondly, the use of color is fantastic. The shifting circular timing indicators on the Regatta Countdown provide a ton of visual interest and give the watch a touch of casual flair. On the Yacht Timer GMT, particularly the two-tone variant on a bracelet, the red tipped GMT hand, charcoal dial, and rose gold finish all around work really well together.

The Yacht Timer GMT and the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown are both available now on Frederique Constant’s website in a variety of configurations, mixing dial colors, straps, bracelets, and finishes. Frederique Constant

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer GMT And Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown Watches

Luxury watchmaker  Frederique Constant continues a strong year of releases by introducing the GMT complication to the Yacht Timer family, while reviving a Yacht Master Collection favorite from 1997 in the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown watch (above). A favorite of Peter Stas, co-founder of the company, Frederique Constant released the Regatta model after just 10 years in the industry. Its arresting visual and intriguing function made it an instant classic. Now, after more than two decades without an update, the Regatta returns as a beneficiary of the manufacture’s improved capacity and experience and rejoins the collection in two eye-catching colorways. This model more than justifies its new name (“Yacht Timer”) thanks to the instantly noticeable countdown timer on the dial between 12 o’clock and center. This unmissable series of apertures is designed to count down the critical 10 minutes before competing vessels are due to cross the start line.

Frederique-Constant-Yacht-Timer-Regatta-Countdown-Watches

Boat racing is one of the few racing formats that begins before the start line. During the ten minute countdown, competing vessels can jostle for position to catch the best wind or get a strategic advantage over a rival. The 10-minute window is crucial for timing the exact moment to strike. Inaccurate timekeeping could result in a crew having to abandon a positive launch and track to the back of the field to cross the start line fairly. That kind of blown maneuver is often enough to cost a vessel any chance of coming home in first.

Frederique-Constant-Yacht-Timer-Regatta-Countdown-Watches

Pleasingly, this is not a watch that is “inspired” by nautical endeavors; it is actually intended for use. It is a functional, highly-refined racing tool that is comfortable accompanying the world’s best skippers on deck. So how does it work? Each circle represents one minute. When set to zero, the centrally mounted seconds hand remains static at 12 and the apertures match the dial color (so blue on the blue dial and white on the white dial). When the countdown timer is activated, the seconds hand begins its travel and the circles change from blue to white, or white to blue, depending on the dial. When all five circles have changed color and the seconds hand hits 12, five minutes have passed. This countdown is commenced by the top pusher, stopped by the top pusher, and reset by the bottom pusher, as you would expect for a simple twin-pusher chronograph.

Frederique-Constant-Yacht-Timer-GMT-Watches

The GMT model, however, does not feature such an active complication. Instead, it is suited to the global traveler looking for a stylish and refined watch from an affordable manufacture. Powered by the FC-350 movement, the Yacht Timer’s GMT function is driven by an in-house, dial-side module. The movement is self-winding and has a 38-hour power reserve, an operating speed of 28,800vph, and a useful date function at 3 o’clock. Luminous in low-light conditions and water-resistant to 100 meters, the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer GMT watch is more than just a pretty face and has been designed to survive as a real-world companion on all manner of expeditions.

Frederique-Constant-Yacht-Timer-GMT-Watches

Both the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer GMT And Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown watches measure 42mm across. The Regatta Countdown model is available in a stainless steel with a white dial (reference FC-380ST4H6 priced at $3,195 ), a bi-color option with a white dial (reference FC-380VT4H2B, $3,395 ), or with a rose gold plated finish with a navy blue dial (reference FC-380NT4H4 for $3,495 ). Meanwhile, the GMT comes in either an anthracite dial and a bi-color case and bracelet combo for $1,995 (reference FC-350GT4H2B), or a rose gold plated finish sporting a white dial on a brown leather strap, which retails for $2,095  (reference FC-350VT4H4). The Elegant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown From Frederique Constant

Luxurious Magazine

Watches can be more than just a timepiece, and this is the case with the new model of Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown. A fresh take on the classic design, its elegance shows through.

In 2019 the Frederique Constant signature timepiece, the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown returned to the collection. It was first introduced to the Swiss firm in 1997, by C0-Founder Peter Stas who is a passionate sailor.

The Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown offers a technical solution to an essential part of yachting and competitive regattas, the countdown to the start of the race. Classically stylish its new look is the height of luxury sports chic, crafted to allow the owner to enjoy regattas and relaxed pontoon times alike.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown stainless steel case

Housed in an elegant 42 mm polished stainless-steel case, the new Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown showcases an anthracite grey dial, playing on the colour harmony.

Influenced by beautiful examples of traditional luxury watchmaking, this new dial features a guilloché decoration. An age-old finish allows the light a regular pattern, enabling it to dance, stretch out, be reflected, like waves and swells, providing the owner with an ever-changing appearance depending on the viewing angle.

Enhancing the design characteristics, a matching stainless-steel strap made up of alternating polished and satin-finished links, fastened with a folding buckle is provided.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Case

The case houses the automatic FC-380 calibre. It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph, it has a power reserve of 48 hours and is guaranteed water-resistant to 10 ATM (100 metres).

The dial is embellished with a broad hour and minute hands enhanced by a luminous treatment and complemented by an orange hand that accentuates the sporty look. At 12 o’clock, it sits precisely in the centre of a luminescent double index hour marker.

The central complication being the countdown is located under the latter where five openings can be seen. At the top of the dial, each dot relates to one minute. Depress the button at the top to start the first countdown, gradually turning all the dots from grey to white. When all five dots are white, five minutes have elapsed.

The second countdown, the final five minutes prior to the start signal, then begins automatically. This time, the five dots gradually turn orange. When the 5th and final dot have lit orange and the second’s hand is at 12 o’clock, the race is on.

Official description

This 1997 timepiece has a feature that counts down the time before a regatta begins. Frederique Constant is bringing back this rare nautical complication for avid sailing enthusiasts.

The family-owned company was barely in business for a decade when it introduced its first regatta watch, which was part of its Yacht Master collection. The striking signature timepiece was a tribute to the love for sailing felt by Peter Stas, co-founder of Frederique Constant.

Frederique Constant unveils a new sport-chic edition of its Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

A Frederique Constant signature timepiece, the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown made its return to the watchmaking scene in 2019. It joined the Maison's collections as early as 1997 at the instigation of its co-founder Peter Stas, who is passionate about sailing and the open sea himself. A fresh take on sailing in watchmaking Frederique Constant’s Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown offers a technical complication popular with fans of yachting and regattas: the countdown to the start of the race. Its classically stylish new look is the epitome of luxury sports chic, designed for regattas and relaxed pontoon times alike. Housed in an elegant 42 mm polished stainless-steel case, the new Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown presents an anthracite grey dial, playing on the colour harmony. Inspired by the most stunning examples of traditional luxury watchmaking, this new dial features a guilloché decoration. This age-old finish affords the light a regular pattern, where it can dance, stretch out and be reflected, like waves and swells, presenting an ever-changing appearance depending on the viewing angle. To complement this elegant symphony of tones, this new version comes with a matching stainless-steel strap made up of alternating polished and satin finished links, fastened with a folding buckle. Within the case is the automatic FC-380 calibre. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph, it has a power reserve of 48 hours and is guaranteed water-resistant to 10 ATM (100 metres).

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown (Ref. FC-380GT4H6B)

Frederique Constant , who managed to make a name for itself with its successful breakthroughs in the name of luxury watchmaking as well as its brilliant price/performance ratio products, offers a stylish alternative to boat lovers with its Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown, a model specially designed for yacht races.

fc-380gt4h6b-frederique-constant-yacht-timer-regatta-countdown-1.jpg

Frederique Constant once again gives life to the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown model, which was introduced in 1997 for the first time. This unique complication, which is used to calculate the countdown process ranging from 5 to 15 minutes in yacht races, meets the simple yet stylish design philosophy of the brand.

fc-380gt4h6b-frederique-constant-yacht-timer-regatta-countdown-2.jpg

The model we put under the spotlight comes with a 42mm diameter stainless steel case. The case, which has a convex sapphire crystal on the front and a cover with a sapphire crystal display on the back, is resistant to water pressure up to 100 meters.

fc-380gt4h6b-frederique-constant-yacht-timer-regatta-countdown-5.jpg

The model's dial is home to a stylish anthracite-tone background. Baton-style applique indexes and leaf-shaped hands accompany the dial, which has gained dynamism with the Guilloché pattern added with the printing method. The indicator, located at 12 o'clock and designed in the form of a crescent, consists of windows that will show the countdown time required to start the race.

fc-380gt4h6b-frederique-constant-yacht-timer-regatta-countdown-3.jpg

Now let's take a look at how this complication that gives the model its name works. Each dot on the top of the dial represents 1 minute. Pressing the top button starts the first countdown and gradually turns all dots from gray to white. When all 5 dots are white, 5 minutes have passed. The second countdown is done for the last 5 minutes before the start signal and starts automatically after the first countdown. This time, the 5 dots gradually turn orange. When the 5th/final dot has turned orange and the second's hand is at 12 o’clock, the regatta is officially underway. The pusher at 4 o'clock on the case resets the countdown process.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown works with the Caliber FC-380, which is designed by adding the Regatta Countdown module on the Sellita SW-500 movement. The automatic movement, operating at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph), offers up to 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

The model comes with an integrated stainless steel bracelet, which is secured by a Frederique Constant signed push-release butterfly clasp. The model’s box-set includes an additional rubber strap for an even sportier look. Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown Ref. FC-380GT4H6B is featured on the brand's global website with a price tag of CHF 3,695.00 .

Frederique Constant 2020 Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

F ollowing up on the launch of a Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown timepiece in 2019, Frederique Constant has added a new variation for 2020.

Highlighted by an anthracite gray Clous de Paris guilloché dial, the regatta countdown complication uses 5 circular apertures — that can change between gray, white, and orange — to indicate the 10-minutes before the start of a yacht race.

2020 Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

First, you push the button at 1 o’clock, and after 1-minute the first dot individually turns from gray to white, then each subsequent circular indication (representing 1-minute) begins to change, and once the first 5-minutes is up (and all the dots are white). Then the second set of colored dots automatically begins counting down and changing from white to orange every minute. After 5-minutes the process is finished and the race begins.

2020 Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

The reason for such countdown is because yachts cannot idle at the start line like with cars, for example. And so they need to approach the start line as close as they can without crossing before the starting buzzer, or else risk a time penalty. The regatta yacht timer helps quickly visualize this two-part 10-minute countdown process — on the wrist.

2020 Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

Like the existing models from 2019, the 42 mm diameter stainless steel case is finished with a mixture of polished and brushed surfaces. A tall box-type sapphire crystal protects the dial. Water-resistance is rated to 100 meters.

2020 Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

Driving the hours, minutes, seconds, and regatta yacht timer countdown function is an outsourced ETA 7750 (or Sellita) — modified with a regatta countdown timer function in place of the typical chronograph functionality. The automatic movement beats at 4Hz, has 25 jewels, and a power reserve of 48-hours.

This gray dial version is available with the stainless steel bracelet as shown or a rubber strap and the retail price is $3,495.

Frederique Constant Introduces the Regatta Countdown Chronograph

frederique constant yacht timer regatta countdown

A Swiss brand now owned by Citizen Watch of Japan, Frederique Constant excels at complications in an affordable and reasonable manner, and now it has added the Regatta Countdown Chronograph  to its repertoire.

Unlike many yachting watches that are often over-designed with nautical details – think pennants and lots of colours – Frederique Constant has kept its regatta chronograph clean. Priced a bit over US$3000, the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown has two key elements: central chronograph seconds hand and five circular apertures lined up under 12 o’clock.

Frederique Constant Regatta Countdown Chronograph 1

The apertures function as a 5- or 10-minute regatta countdown timer; this records the time just before the start of a race when yachts position themselves for the best spot at the starting line.

When the chronograph is inactive, the apertures show white discs. Once started with the pusher at two o’clock, the apertures turn blue one by one, with each aperture representing one elapsed minute.

Frederique Constant Regatta Countdown Chronograph 2

After five minutes, and five blue apertures, the five-minute countdown to the race begins. The apertures progressively change from showing blue to orange, again at the rate of one a minute.

The dials – blue or silver – are straightforward, apart from the countdown windows, and decorated with a hobnail guilloche. Luminous hands match the luminous baton hour markers.

Frederique Constant Regatta Countdown Chronograph 6

Rated to 100m, the case is steel (or gold-plated steel), and 42mm in diameter. Notably, it’s fitted with an upscale, “box-type” sapphire crystal that has an angular dome. Inside is the automatic FC-380 movement, which is a Valjoux 7750 (or Sellita equivalent; the brand does not specify) modified to have the countdown function.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown sports a new look for 2020. It is designed for competitive sailing but also proves supremely stylish back on terra firma. Moreover, this eye-catching model upholds the brand’s values which have led to global success in a comparatively short time.

Located on the outskirts of Geneva, Frederique Constant operates from a modern production facility. From the outset, the company’s objective was to create quality watches at very keen prices. Indeed, the founders of the Maison, Peter Stas and Aletta Bax, have frequently stated,’ let more people enjoy luxury’.

Some of watchmaking’s old guard have been in existence since the 18th and 19th centuries, hence, in comparative terms, Frederique Constant is a young company. It was founded in 1988 and has since enjoyed exponential growth. In 2004, the luxury brand unveiled its first Manufacture movement, a technical feat which has eluded many firms. Today, the brand has produced 29 different calibres, demonstrating its ingenuity and technical capability, two attributes which are at the heart of the brand’s culture.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

In 2019, the luxury marque unveiled the Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown. As its name suggests, this watch is designed for regattas, where five dots on the dial transition from one colour to another, signifying the countdown to the start of a race.

This latest version of the watch, presented in a stainless steel case, features a gorgeous anthracite guilloché dial and is equipped with the brand’s in-house FC-380 calibre.

The brand’s press release (May 2020)

A Frederique Constant signature timepiece, the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown made its return to the watchmaking scene in 2019. It joined the Maison’s collections as early as 1997 at the instigation of its co-founder Peter Stas, who is passionate about sailing and the open sea himself.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

A fresh take on sailing in watchmaking

Frederique Constant’s Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown offers a technical complication popular with fans of yachting and regattas: the countdown to the start of the race.

Ingenuity and simplicity

The dial is embellished with broad hour and minute hands enhanced by a luminous treatment and complemented by an orange hand that accentuates the sporty look. At 12 o’clock, it sits precisely in the centre of a luminescent double index hour marker. Under the latter are the five openings that form the Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown’s central complication: the countdown.

Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown

Located at the top of the dial, each dot represents 1 minute. Pressing the button at the top starts the first countdown, gradually turning all the dots from grey to white. When all 5 dots are white, 5 minutes have passed.

The second countdown, the final 5 minutes before the starting signal, then begins automatically. This time, the 5 dots gradually turn orange. When the 5th and final dot has turned orange and the seconds hand is at 12 o’clock, the regatta is officially underway.

Consistent with its positioning, the new Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown costs the same as the two-tone model already in the collection: €3,495 (recommended retail price). Available with a rubber strap at no extra charge for an even sportier look.

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
