Boat of the Week: How an Iconic 171-Foot Superyacht Got New Life After Being Unused for a Decade

It’s just a tad more powerful than the Aston Martin it’s named after. With a staggering 9,200-turbocharged horsepower, this 171-foot speed machine can reach a highly impressive 37 mph, two or three times faster than other yachts its size. Breakfast in Monaco, lunch in Porto Cervo and back in time for dinner? No problem.

Launched back in 2010 and christened DB9 after the classic V12-engined British sports car, it was the first of Palmer Johnson ’s iconic PJ 170 Sport Yacht range, and the only one built in England.

Eleven years later, DB9 still spins heads from St. Tropez to St. Barts—two of its favorite ports of call—like few other superyachts. Those razor-edged lines are from designers Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard of Venice-based Nuvolari Lenard.

Today, DB9 is the pride and joy of American businessman and boat lover, John Rosatti. Maybe you’ve bought a new car from one of his many Plaza Auto Mall dealerships. Or fine-dined at his Vic & Angelo’s Italian eatery in South Florida. Or grabbed a burger at one of his successful BurgerFi joints.

Rosatti bought DB9 back in 2019 a year after selling his much-loved 214-foot Codecasa superyacht Double Down . Before that, he owned the 160-foot Christensen Nice ’n Easy and, before that, the 127-foot Crescent Take it Easy.

At the time, the yacht was languishing unloved in an Istanbul shipyard, a for-sale sign in its window and an €18 million asking price. Rosatti’s car dealer instincts weighed the pros and cons. The cons included pricy overhauls for the yacht’s entire mechanical and electronic systems, plus a re-spray of the hull. The single, but eventually deciding, pro: an iconic boat at a great price.

Rosatti is currently off-the-grid aboard DB9 , cruising around the Italian island of Sardinia, so wasn’t available for comment. But Peter Thompson, managing director of Monaco-based Yachting Partners International, and Rosatti’s longtime friend and boat-buying advisor, gave Robb Report a history of the boat.

“ DB9 had pretty much been in mothballs her entire life,” he says. “Shortly after launch, she was hauled out of the water and parked on the hard. When we tracked her down in Istanbul years later, she had less than 1,200 hours on the engines.”

The Palmer Johnson was originally built for the Russian oligarch Sergei Pugachev. He was the founder of the MezhPrombank, and a close friend and advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to published reports, in 2011, a year after he took delivery of DB9 , Pugachev was accused by the Russian government of running off with a $1 billion bailout loan given to his bank. His considerable assets were reportedly seized, including DB9 , and he fled to England. He’s now living in exile in the South of France.

“A Turkish buyer bought the boat out of receivership in 2016, managed to get it to Istanbul and renamed it Aura ,” says Thompson. “But it just sat there and, as we know, boats like these hate not being used. When we found her in 2019, she needed work.”

After the purchase, the boat went into the Dunya Yachts yard in Istanbul for a comprehensive refit. All the systems were upgraded, those mighty MAN diesels were overhauled and the yacht was given a complete re-paint in that polarizing Champagne-with-red-bootstripe color scheme. And the original DB9 name was resurrected.

“Today she’s in absolutely pristine condition,” says Thompson. ”Inside and out, she looks brand new and still turns heads like no other boat I know.”

Some of DB9’s coolest features include not one, but three pools, including a huge 26-foot saltwater pool on the foredeck that, when empty, holds the yacht’s RIB tender. Emptying it takes less than 10 minutes. For alfresco entertainment, the yacht comes with a state-of-the-art outdoor cinema on the sundeck. Belowdecks are five spacious staterooms for up to 12 guests, including a full-beam master.

According to Thompson, the “owner recently decided that he wants to replace DB9 with a larger yacht more suited to world-girding.” So, when the Rosattis are done cruising the Med this fall, it’ll be displayed at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, with a €25 million, or $29.4 million, asking price.

Maybe Rosatti should consider throwing in a champagne-colored Aston Martin DB9 to sweeten the deal.

In 2010, Palmer Johnson joined forces with Nuvolari Lenard and the 171.9-foot (52.36m) DB9 was the impressive result. This semi-displacement aluminum-hulled superyacht has a beam of 31.2-feet (9.5m), a draft of 8-feet (2.44m) and a range of 4,000 nautical miles. IMPRESSIVE GUEST ACCOMMODATION

Guests sleep in five beautifully appointed staterooms, all of which are spacious, tastefully furnished and offer comfort, luxury and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. The master stateroom stretches across the full beam of the yacht and is situated aft on the lower deck. It has numerous features to recommend it. These include a walk-in closet, a spacious en-suite bathroom and a private stairway by which the stateroom is accessed. The remainder of the accommodation is equally well planned-out. The lower deck has a foyer and leading off this are two double staterooms and two twin staterooms, with two extra Pullman beds available. All the rooms are en-suite.

LIFE ON BOARD

Despite the attractions of her interior, the deck spaces naturally absorb most of the guests’ time while aboard. On the sundeck, there is an open-air cinema, a television and sound system, and also a barbecue area. She also has a huge pool for guests to relax in. 

To guarantee that charterers enjoy the great cruising grounds, DB9 is stacked with great tenders and toys. These include Sea-Doos, SeaBobs, a wakeboard, paddleboard, water skis, and inflatables – including a mini inflatable assault course. In the summer, DB9 can be seen cruising in the East and West Mediterranean, taking in Sicily, Sardinia, Provence, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, the French Riviera and Corsica, among other destinations. In winter, she turns to the Caribbean’s Winward and the Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgins and The Bahamas.

True to her name, the Amels-built superyacht ADDICTION, has been highly admired since she was first launched in 2010. At 178.2-feet (54.3m) she is a great size to accommodate 12 guests in six luxurious staterooms, along with a total of 13 crewmembers.

Her naval architecture came from the talented studio of Tim Hayward while her interior is the inspiration of Laura Sessa Design. This steel displacement yacht is a familiar sight in the Balearic Islands, French Riviera, Italian coastlines and Provencal coast. She cruises at 12.5 knots with a maximum speed of 15 knots. A Summary of Motor Yacht DB9

Coming from the Palmer Johnson Yachts yacht builder in the United States the DB9 is 37 m 120 (foot) in length. Superyacht DB9 can accommodate up to 8 guests with 5 professional crew. Her former names or project names are (Pj 120) Khalila. She can reach a high speed of 28 knots.

The New Build & Design with respect to Luxury Yacht DB9

In 2005 she was actually launched with celebration in Sturgeon Bay WI and following sea trials and final completion was thereafter handed over to the new owner. Palmer Johnson Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in the United States. The hull was crafted from aluminium. The motor yacht superstructure component is made extensively using composite. With a beam of 7.4 m or 24.3 feet DB9 has moderate room. She has a fairly shallow draught of 1.9m (6.25ft). She had refit maintenance and alteration work completed by 2008.

The Engineering And The Speed The M/Y DB9 Can Reach:

The 12V 4000 M90 engine powering the yacht is built by MTU. She is driven by twin screw propellers. The engine of the yacht produces 2750 horse power (or 2051 kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the yacht is thus 5500 HP / 4102 KW.

DB9 Crew Profiles TOM TANNER | Captain | American Born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Thomas Tanner’s experience on the water started almost immediately. Raised sailing on his father’s sailboat, by six years old Tom spent his summers sailing on his own optimist dinghy out of Ida Lewis Yacht Club. At fifteen years old he found himself in his first job as a deckhand on a 101’ wooden schooner where his love of cruising began. After participating in the Tall Ships and OpSail2000 events Tom returned to Newport, RI to his roots of competitive sailboat racing. He was hooked, and soon travelled all over the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean competing in world class ocean and maxi racing circuits with wins in notable races such as The Heineken Regatta, Marblehead to Halifax, Newport to Bermuda Race as well as both the 12 meter North American & World championships. It was during this time that he began his second career at sea with formal training and climbed the ranks to Master and Unlimited Dynamic Positioning officer on a 300’ subsea commercial vessel. However, soon the passion of yachting and the need to travel called once again. Tom looks forward to providing you with an exclusive and exciting holiday on board DB9. PATRICIO LOPEZ BENAVIDES | Chief Officer | Mexican Patricio or Pat as the crew refer to him brings a diverse background in yachting and hospitality. He has both motor yacht and sailing experience with qualifications that include Chief Mate 3000 GT. An enthusiast of boating and an avid PADI certified Instructor, Patricio enjoys every moment he is at sea. During his time back home in Mexico, Patricio spends his afternoons playing golf and enjoying a good meal with family and friends. Back onboard, his good-natured spirit and can-do attitude put guests at ease while his professionalism and ability to command a variety of situations instill confidence. After growing up on the beach, it was a natural progression to work on the water. She came into yachting a bit later in life than most but has made up for lost time, having cruised the waters of the eastern and western Med, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific in the past six years since she began. Her background in fitness instruction and hospitality made her transition into yachting seamless. The thing Aubrey loves most about working on charter yachts is meeting new people and finding new ways to surprise them. She brings a finely tuned ability to anticipate the needs of her guests and a great sense of humour. When she isn’t working you can find Aubrey baking, cooking, doing arts and crafts, or trying out the newest fitness crazes. After working as a live-in nanny for a few months in a small town in the UK, the ocean called her back and she joined the yachting industry in the Mediterranean, now almost 4 years ago. While traveling and gaining experience in the yachting industry, Nadia’s interests also lie in beauty & aesthetics. Nadia is dedicated to self-improvement and has throughout the years completed many beauty & yachting related courses during her time off. Julio then made the jump to yachting and is now happy to bring experience and a positive attitude onboard DB9. DONALD LEEVERS | Deckhand | English Donald was brought up in Newcastle, Australia, an area known for its beaches and vineyards. He enjoyed his surroundings by being very involved in many different sports such as soccer, tennis, kickboxing, golf, and swimming. He was and still is an avid reader in his free time as well. In Donald’s pre-yachting life, he put his green thumb to work as a private landscaper and in a nursery. Donald’s enjoyment of the sea led him to yachting through the suggestion of his sister who thought his skills would be a great match for the industry. He took a leap of faith, sold all his belongings, did his courses, moved to France, and was rewarded with his first position soon after. Raised sailing on his father’s sailboat, by six years old Tom spent his summers<br /> sailing on his own optimist dinghy out of Ida Lewis Yacht Club. At fifteen years old he found himself<br /> in his first job as a deckhand on a 101’ wooden schooner where his love of cruising<br /> began. After participating in the Tall Ships and OpSail2000 events Tom returned to Newport, RI to<br /> his roots of competitive sailboat racing. He was hooked, and soon travelled all over the Atlantic<br /> Ocean and Mediterranean competing in world class ocean and maxi racing circuits with wins in<br /> notable races such as The Heineken Regatta, Marblehead to Halifax, Newport to Bermuda Race as<br /> well as both the 12 meter North American & World championships. It was during this time that he<br /> began his second career at sea with formal training and climbed the ranks to Master and Unlimited<br /> Dynamic Positioning officer on a 300’ subsea commercial vessel. However, soon the passion of<br /> yachting and the need to travel called once again. He<br /> has both motor yacht and sailing experience with qualifications that include Chief Mate 3000 GT.<br /> An enthusiast of boating and an avid PADI certified Instructor, Patricio enjoys every moment he is at<br /> sea. During his time back home in Mexico, Patricio spends his afternoons playing golf and enjoying<br /> a good meal with family and friends.<br /> Back onboard, his good-natured spirit and can-do attitude put guests at ease while his<br /> professionalism and ability to command a variety of situations instill confidence. She grew up doing<br /> competitive gymnastics and later participated in cheerleading. She earned her bachelor’s degree in<br /> psychology from the University of Hawaii. After growing up on the beach, it was a natural<br /> progression to work on the water. She came into yachting a bit later in life than most but has made<br /> up for lost time, having cruised the waters of the eastern and western Med, the Bahamas, the<br /> Caribbean, and the South Pacific in the past six years since she began. Her background in fitness<br /> instruction and hospitality made her transition into yachting seamless.<br /> The thing Aubrey loves most about working on charter yachts is meeting new people and finding<br /> new ways to surprise them. She brings a finely tuned ability to anticipate the needs of her guests<br /> and a great sense of humour. When she isn’t working you can find Aubrey baking, cooking, doing<br /> arts and crafts, or trying out the newest fitness crazes. At age 17 she<br /> stepped into the hospitality industry working as a waitress during her last year at school, where she<br /> saved up to book a one-way ticket out of South Africa and into her new life. After working as a<br /> live-in nanny for a few months in a small town in the UK, the ocean called her back and she joined<br /> the yachting industry in the Mediterranean, now almost 4 years ago. While traveling and gaining<br /> experience in the yachting industry, Nadia’s interests also lie in beauty & aesthetics. Bhes is loving of the career that he has chosen and always strives for the best results<br /> possible. He spent his childhood playing basketball and nurturing<br /> his affinity for music. He is well-versed in playing the guitar, bass, and drums, learning the piano,<br /> and has a wonderful singing voice. Before joining yachting he played the guitar for Paolo Nutini and<br /> his band played in festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds, and Redding.<br /> He joined yachting, following in his Chief Officer father’s footsteps, after needing a break from<br /> performing. However, he soon found that he could intertwine his new career and his love of music<br /> with charter guests. If you are lucky, maybe he will play a song or two for you! Dan’s favorite parts<br /> of yachting are being able to explore new and beautiful places, his favorites are the Dalmatian and<br /> Balearic islands, and being able to share his love of music with guests. He has previously worked on<br /> boats such as Stella Maris, The Wellesley, Illusion, Nero, and Aquarius.<br /> <br /> <br /> JULIO AUGUST | Second Engineer | Mexican<br /> Julio was born in Mexico City and after finishing his basic studies he joined the Mexican Merchant<br /> Maritime Navy at the young age of 18 years old, after four years there he gained a degree as an<br /> Engineering Cadet. Julio then started his career as an Engineering watchkeeping officer onboard<br /> Roll off and Bulk Carriers Vessels. Julio then made the jump to yachting and is now happy to bring<br /> experience and a positive attitude onboard DB9.<br /> <br /> DONALD LEEVERS | Deckhand | English<br /> Donald was brought up in Newcastle, Australia, an area known for its beaches and vineyards. He<br /> enjoyed his surroundings by being very involved in many different sports such as soccer, tennis,<br /> kickboxing, golf, and swimming. He was and still is an avid reader in his free time as well. In Donald’s<br /> pre-yachting life, he put his green thumb to work as a private landscaper and in a nursery.<br /> Donald’s enjoyment of the sea led him to yachting through the suggestion of his sister who thought<br /> his skills would be a great match for the industry. He took a leap of faith, sold all his belongings, did<br /> his courses, moved to France, and was rewarded with his first position soon after. He has previously<br /> worked aboard Stella Maris, Martha Ann, Stormborn, Lady Tahiti, and Anna I. He has cruised the<br /> waters of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Bahamas. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled).
