Challenger Model Yachts: World-Class Sailing – Wiley Reynolds

Wiley Reynolds has made model yachts since 1992 and customers can't get enough of his intricate working replicas. He discusses the genesis of Challenger Model Yachts, the quality of materials he works with, and the excitement of handling a 9ft-tall sailboat.

Wiley Reynolds has been creating model yachts for nearly two decades, and he still says that the best advert is trying one out for yourself.

"It's like trying to sell the world's first hula hoop, or roller skate," he jokes. "But if you hand the controls over to people they get it straight away."

One owner is UBS – the company bought four yachts to promote the Swiss America's Cup team. The boat makes quite an impression on display, standing 9ft tall on its keel, but it really comes into its own in the water. The radio-controlled Challenger is a gorgeous 57in long, carbon-fibre racing sailboat, which packs into an 11in-high aluminium carrying case just slightly larger than a golf bag.

It is built for ocean sailing conditions but is quite at home in a harbour or city pond. Many owners carry a couple aboard their larger yachts. The boat can go from the case to the water in about ten minutes. Its large size gives it the handling qualities of a true International America's Cup Class yacht.

Childhood fascination

Reynolds himself has boated from the age of eight, when he was growing up in Florida, US. "I always liked to build models, though," he says, "and I was fascinated by the possibility of driving a boat without touching it."

He built his first radio controlled sailboat at the age of 20 with some of the earliest available radio gear. He then became a full-scale aeroplane and helicopter pilot, as well as a model airplane enthusiast. Later, he met businessman Bill Koch in Palm Beach and was invited to sail on his Maxi boat. Koch was the Maxi World Championship winner in 1990. He entered the Americas Cup in 1992 and asked Reynolds to sail with him in one of the races.

Koch won the competition and later decided to sponsor the first ever all-women America's Cup team. In order to raise further funds, he asked the company which made the original America's Cup to make a replica.

"The sterling silver Cup was beautiful, but I thought there should be a model of the boat as well," Reynolds recalls. "So, with the help of their engineers and my technical background I designed a working model." Both the model and Cup were displayed at promotional events.

Racing car quality

Interest flooded in and Reynolds began to build more models. He sourced the hull manufacturing to the same German workshop that makes carbon-fibre parts for BMW and Mercedes rally cars. The hulls are shipped to the US for masts from Texas, machined parts from Colorado and moulded parts from Wisconsin. Many components are titanium, stainless steel or chromed brass and none of the construction is wood.

The boats are easy for a businessperson to understand due to the simple, straightforward design, and they require very little maintenance. The quality of the materials should make the Challenger last for many generations.

Friendship and fun

Model sailboat regattas take place all over the world, but there is a regular meeting for the Challenger Yachts in Gstaad, Switzerland, each winter at the 'Ski Sail Weekend', where many international competitors come to represent their home yacht clubs.

"Racing model sailboats is great fun because it's different every time, and everyone's got the same advantage – the boats are a one-design class so it takes pure skill and a little luck to win," says Reynolds. "On the other hand, if you seek relaxation, just going for a sail is marvellously peaceful. Once the boat's in the water out on a journey, you are in its world. It is a real sailboat, just a small one.

"It is also a wonderful activity to do with your friends, children or grandchildren, and then of course it is not really about the boat, but the companionship."

Back To Top   Unlike battery powered flying devices, gliders do not come with a limited flight length. This is one of the main reasons why they are so popular. In favorable conditions, a pilot will be able to keep their model afloat all day long from just a single launch. These models provide a user with hours of countless fun.   Since you will have access to a device that requires you to concentrate and block other distractions out (if you do not want to crash), radio-controlled gliders are said to be highly relaxing and therapeutic. When compared with other machines that use a motor to operate, you will be amazed by just how quiet RC’s are.

  There are two ways for a glider to gain or retain altitude once airborne. They are:

Thermal Soaring – This is created by certain areas of warm air rising from the earth. When land heats up due to warmth of the sun, air above it begins to warm. When this warm air heats, it begins to rise and allows cooler air to move in to replace it. This results in warm air heating and rising up, giving you access to a continuous current of rising air. As long as warm air is rising at a faster rate that your device sinks while in flight, your glider will be able to sustain continuous lift.

Slope Soaring – Slope lift is generated when a breeze hits the face of a cliff or a sloping land. When a breeze hits a vertical surface, there is no place for it to go but up. As long as this rising breeze is greater than sink rate of your model, your craft will remain afloat.

What’s the difference between glider and a plane? Simply put, gliders use only natural elements to operate while planes require wings and an engine to provide you with similar performance.  

What’s the difference between radio control and remote control? Radio control uses radio frequencies to control a device whereas remote control uses items such as Infrared, a TV remote, or just about anything else with a wire. In other words, all radio-controlled crafts are also remote controlled but not all remote-controlled items are radio controlled.  

Can I fly a glider anywhere? It all depends on where you intend to fly it. Some areas have strict rules that prohibit flying in public areas. Before taking your craft out for a spin, you should always confirm whether flying a RC model craft is allowed or prohibited. You should also be wary of any possible frequency interferences that could cause you to lose control of your aircraft as it might have disastrous consequences, especially if you are flying in public areas.  

W hat does “channel” mean in RC talk? “Channel” has two meanings: One, it generally refers to number of channels a specific model has. It can also be used to refer to frequency channel that your aircraft system operates on.  

Do I need insurance to fly? It is not mandatory but we would recommend that you do so just in case of any unforeseen accidents/ incidents.  

Which model would you recommend for a beginner? Look out for models with high wings, flat or semi-symmetrical wing section, and noticeable dihedral. Such models will provide you with much needed stability during your flight sessions. When you are more experienced, you can opt for devices manufactured specifically for expert pilots such as a Stealth Fighter or a Fokker Triplane.

There are 2other kinds of lift though they aren’t often exploited by rc gliders. Mountain wave: when wind comes down a mountain onto a flat area it creates standing waves which get much higher than the mountains that created them. Converging systems. When a warm front and a cold front collide the warm air rises. I’ve experienced this slope soaring when the wind comes gently down the slope from a mountain, flying away from the mountain can yield very rapidly rising air. There is one other type of lift that is theroretical at this point. Polar vortex. There Perlan 2 glider is attempting it this year and will use mountain wave to get up to it. The plan is a sustained flight altitude record with the target of 90000ft. There is only 2% as much air that high and their stall speed at that height is over 400mph. Pretty wild stuff for a glider. Jets have gotten that high but by using upward momentum. They can’t sustain flight that high, only a glider might.

As the auto world quickly moves beyond combustion engines for its cars, yacht and boat builders have begun to do the same. But electric boats are more challenging than electric cars. While drivers can (more or less) depend on a Tesla Model S to get about 300 miles on a single charge, boat battery life tends to be less predictable. Solaris Yachts

The company Solaris Yachts has a long history of both the production of new yachts and the repair/refit of yachts. The shipyard opened its gates in 1974 – in Aquileia, at the top of the Venetian lagoon, an area well known for its boatbuilding traditions. The success of Solaris Yachts has mainly come thanks to its brilliant construction philosophy – a combination of technology, strength and traditional manufacturing. Each Solaris yacht has a 40mm composite main bulkhead, the bulkhead is laminated on both sides to the hull and deck. Longitudinal and transverse beams are laminated to the hull. The keels on all models have a wide keel plate for optimal power transmission and power distribution through the 30mm coarse steel bolts that connect the keel to the hull. The yachts are very strong and built with the best components and material choices. The Solaris 40 was a brand new model in 2021 and she packs all the punch, looks and of course, comfort of her bigger sisters. The main idea behind the Solaris 40 was to incorporate the latest advances along with keeping the stylish Solaris lines - which Javier Soto Acebal has created throughout the whole Solaris fleet.

The Solaris 44 saw its debut at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival and has proved to be a very popular yacht. Over 30 have been built and their popularity continues. The hull shape and design of the Solaris 44 was first seen on the Solaris 55 with the now trademark Solaris soft chine and carrying her full beam aft to the transom. Her twin rudders provide great grip on the water and of course, the outboard twin helms allow for fantastic visibility down the decks. With over 60 Solaris 50s sold since her introduction, it was a tall request for Javier Soto Acebal to improve on this popular size with additional refinements. He has delivered however with the ‘new’ Solaris 50, launched April 2022. Even more sparkling performance that is easily manageable, with increased stability, and a clean uncluttered striking style. The integral transom tender garage and improved layout down below takes this new 50 to an unbelievable next level of design.

A long 14 months in the design office eventually came the spectacular Solaris 55. Every detail was reviewed and fine-tuned to ensure she became a benchmark 16m yacht, in regards to her looks, capabilities and performance. As with her sisters she also carries her maximum beam aft a design feature which is now seen most commonly on a large number of ocean racing yachts. She has a high stability ratio and righting moment ballast to weight ratio of more than 40% created by her T keel with lead bulb and cast iron fin available with a 3m draft or optional shallower 2.7m.

Freshly launched in 2020 to create a yacht that will set the precedent for the future of performance cruising yachts. The aim was to create a Mini-Maxi which means the yacht must be no longer than 18.31m allowing her to take part in Mini-Maxi racing. Including the prestigious Mini-Maxi Cup which takes place in the fabulous Porto Cervo every year. Solaris 64 RS

Solaris 64 RS is one of the newer models from the drawing board of Javier Soto Acebal and hull number one launched in 2019. She is an extremely innovative yacht in the bluewater-cruising segment. The elevated saloon creates space for a central engine room where all service systems are gathered, well insulated so that the two aft cabins are not disturbed. The vessel includes float in float out wet dock that will be able to hold a 65-70 foot sport fisherman in the stern, when the sport fish is removed the tender well becomes a deep swimming pool.  She is diesel electric with Azipod drives.   The vessel has the capability of landing two helicopters and can house both helicopters in a single hangar.  The vessel also has a large tender garage that could hold multiple smaller vessels including a RIB, flats boat, jets skis and two submarines.  The vessel has accommodations for 18 guests and crew of 36.  The vessel would be commercial fit and finish on the exterior and the interior are envisioned to be built to high end cruise ship standards.

The 75m Explorer, by Admiral Shipyards is an example of a Semi Custom Build. The yacht’s exterior design, which remains unnamed, is a display of an elegant yet robust platform with generous exterior deck spaces. The expansive aft deck is designed to accommodate an Agusta Grande helicopter, complete with a storage and refueling hangar below deck.

The interior is spread across four decks and will be finished in a timeless nautical style that is finished with contemporary elements, which will be built and installed by German interio specialists, Fitz Interior. The owner, who is expected to spend prolonged period onboard, will be treated to an exclusive main deck area covering over 300 square metres with five additional guest suites on the lower deck.

75' (22.86m) Yachtfisher EL AMO Now for Sale

The 75-foot (22.86m) EL AMO is now for sale with Northrop & Johnson Yacht Broker Todd Rittenhouse; the yachtfisher is asking $545,000.

EL AMO offers the best of both worlds, providing the comfort of a motor yacht with the capabilities of a sportfish. The yachtfisher was built by Buck Smith in Southern California in 1983 and designed by Ed Monk. The boat showcases a hallmark West Coast styling with classic yet rugged lines. EL AMO has had updates throughout her life including, in 2014, the yacht’s generators were replaced, in 2015 the main engine was rebuilt, in 2017 new electronics were installed and in 2020 the davit was rebuilt.

The yacht showcases a welcoming interior that has a timeless styling. Large windows surround the main deck, flooding the space with natural light and providing endless sea views. EL AMO’s main deck has a desirable open layout that is perfect for entertaining and enjoying time with friends and family. In the yachtfisher’s enclosed pilothouse is another great space for everyone to enjoy. It has a helm station and an L-shaped settee.

Located aft on the pilothouse is a deck the is perfect for watching the cockpit. The cockpit is an impressive area with an abundance of space for fighting fish. On EL AMO’s bow is storage for the tender as well as a bait tank.
