Your guide to Chicago lake and river cruises

One of the best ways to see Chicago is from the water. The city is home to two stunning waterfronts — the Chicago River and Lake Michigan — and each offers plenty of cruise options. Admire the skyline on a lakefront cruise, learn about the city’s iconic architecture on a Chicago River cruise, enjoy dinner and dancing aboard an all-glass vessel, sip cocktails on a tiki-themed boat, paddle your own kayak — the options are truly endless. Here’s your guide to Chicago lake and river cruises, boat tours, dinner cruises, and beyond.

See it all with Shoreline Sightseeing

Shoreline Sightseeing boat cruise on the Chicago River

One of Chicago’s classic cruise options, Shoreline Sightseeing covers all the bases. Their ultra-popular Architecture River Tour takes you on all three branches of the historic Chicago River takes you past dozens of landmark buildings.

They also offer skyline lake tours, plus specialty cruises and holiday events. Hop on a boat at Navy Pier or on Michigan Avenue.

Dine on the water with City Experiences

Odyssey River Cruise

City Experiences dining cruises are the perfect way to create a memorable moment in Chicago. Choose from a river or lake dining cruise, complete with delicious cuisine, cocktails, and entertainment.

Their glass-enclosed river vessel is particularly stunning. It offers passengers panoramic views of the city’s most iconic buildings as you glide along the Chicago River. They also offer lakefront brunch and dinner cruise options that depart from Navy Pier.

Entertain the family with Wendella Boats

With its variety of tour options, cruise times and lengths, and a heated, enclosed cabin, Wendella is a great choice for families looking for flexibility. Choose from lake & river architecture, sunset cruises, and more.

Admire architecture with Chicago’s First Lady

An architecture boat cruise on the Chicago River

Around the world, Chicago is known for its outstanding architecture, and it’s easiest to admire the city’s legacy from the water. By partnering with the Chicago Architecture Center , Chicago’s First Lady offers the most comprehensive tour of the skyline — docents must train 100 hours before they can lead tours.

Speed across Lake Michigan on Seadog Boat Tours

Seadog Boat Tour

Are you up for a thrill? Race across Lake Michigan on SeaDog Cruises, featuring 30 minutes of high speeds and exhilarating twists and turns. Come prepared to get splashed.

SeaDog also offers lakefront speedboat tours and a river/lake architecture tour, featuring views of Chicago’s iconic Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, Museum Campus, and more.

Live it up on an Island Party Boat

Looking for a party? These tiki-themed boats are always a good time, offering drink packages, stellar views, and fun vibes. You can hop on an Island Party Boat at Monroe Harbor or the Chicago Riverwalk, which is also where you’ll find their beach-inspired bar Island Party Hut. Choose from a river cruise, lake cruise, tacky tour guide cruise, or even a dueling pianos cruise.

Go back in time with Chicago Fireboat Tours

Step onto a real, historic fireboat and get ready for a unique experience with Chicago Fireboat Tours . The river tours are given aboard a real piece of Chicago history — a retired fireboat that patrolled the Chicago from 1937 to 1981. Tours are led by expert docents and include historic and sunset options.

Splurge on a Free Spirit Yacht Cruises

Looking to splurge a little? These private yacht charters are the way to go. The spacious yachts comfortably fit up to 49 or 120 people, making them the perfect option for a large celebration or an intimate gathering. Premium bar and catering packages round out the experience.

Explore the Chicago River with Urban Kayaks

Kayaking in Chicago

If you’re ready to ditch the captain and explore the water on your own, then it’s time to grab a paddle at Urban Kayaks . You’ll go through a brief training session before you hit the water, but you’re free to paddle the river or lake at your own pace. Or join in a guided tour to catch the sunset, fireworks, or historic highlights. Rentals are available at the Chicago Riverwalk or Monroe Harbor.

Rent an electric boat

Boat Bike from Chicago Electric Boat Company

Chicago Electric Boat Company offers fun and unique ways to get out on the water, including donut boats, retro boats, and even a bike boat that your group can pedal down the Chicago River. Rental locations include Marina City, the Chicago Riverwalk, and Rockwell on the River in Avondale.

See the skyline aboard Mercury Cruises

While Chicago’s summer fireworks are already fun to watch, it’s an entirely new experience when you’re on a 3D tour. Before the show, you’ll cruise around the lake and see some of Chicago’s famous landmarks.

Mercury Cruises also offer Urban Adventure, Canine Cruises, and Chicago by Night tours.

Check out Chinatown via Chicago Water Taxi

Chicago Water Taxi Boat Tour

Hop on! The Chicago Water Taxi is a fun and cheap way to get around Chicago. The Water Taxi stops at Ogilvie Transportation Center, Chinatown, Goose Island, the Chicago Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue, and River North. Get a one-way ticket for $6 or an all-day pass for $10. • A6193MTfionam 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disgrace of a tour and don't waste your money We paid $531 for this supposed premium dinner cruise. My friend is vegan. For a 3 hour cruise it took almost 90 mins and my friend finally ate a bread roll and was given a plate of raw vegetables as a starter. When we complained they steamed them. I ordered ravioli which was a small tasteless bowl of food. After more than 2hours the main course arrived. Classed as chicken but more the size of a poussin, it came with raw sprouts and a couple of potatoes. Distinctly average. My friend ordered gnocchi which came with cheese so as a vegan it had to go back. It was cold and tasteless when it came back. The only available dessert for my vegan friend was fruit which she doesnt eat. I ordered tirimisu which was inedible. More of a tough Yorkshire pudding with some weird disgusting custard type cream. This all arrived virtually as the cruise was ending. If we had wanted steak or prawns this would have been an extra cost. I remind you this is classed as a premium dinner cruise. No alcohol or soft drinks were included and we paid $531 for the privilege of raw inedible food. When I spoke to the chef and manager of the cruise they were both extremely embarrassed. A joke. This was our last night in Chicago and we though a premium dinner cruise would be a lovely way to remember the city. All we remember is that we haemorrhaged $531 for food that will have cost less than $31. Don't waste your money. Read more Written January 13, 2024

I learned a good bit about local architecture and public infrastructure and then when the “pedal to the metal” ride on Lake Michigan was underway, I was laughing and having a blast. We were lucky to have a gorgeous warm day for this boat ride. A good value IMO and a great memory. I felt safe at all times. Jake gave us a very good tour, handled questions well, and is clearly very knowledgeable about his hometown. I’d do this again. Read more Written October 25, 2023

You’re supposed to go out in to Lake Michigan according to everything I read, however, we literally done circles in the Harbor!!! There was no description of the City, no history information, NOTHING but lunch and a DJ. Oh… and we ordered an appetizer and a Sprite and NEVER got the appetizer - and after asking for almost 45 minutes, finally got the Sprite. HORRIBLE service!!!!!!!!!!!!! • rhondabI6513ES 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Meh… not for us! This cruise was just okay. My husband and I were a bit disappointed by the experience. It wasn’t the elegant experience we were hoping for. The interior of the ship felt a little more cramped than expected. The deck above us was hosting a wedding so that was a little weird. I will say most tables provided good views of the Chicago skyline. Once on the lake, the ship alternated sides to ensure tables on each side had a view of the city. The ship could have been cleaner but it was fine. The service was lacking. Our server was nice enough but not very attentive. Since they take your complete order all at once, you really don’t see your waiter after that, at least we didn’t. As for the food… we both enjoyed our appetizers, however, the kitchen struggles to get the food out so we waited a while for our entrees and dessert. When the food finally came out mine was severely overcooked. It was weird because my husband and I ordered the same entree which was salmon and his was fine and mine was hard as a rock. Dessert was the same experience. My husbands cake was properly thawed to room temperature where my hot (clearly over microwaved) upside down pineapple cake was hard and clearly over heated. The dancing started toward the end of dinner service. The DJ was fine… nothing to write home about. There was a decent number of people on dance floor until the cruise ended so he did his job. Honestly, we were not in the mood to dance and after the unappetizing dinner we had, we were ready to get off the ship but unfortunately we had about an hour to kill. When the ship finally docked, there were quite a few people waiting by the door, eager to get off. One interesting touch was that the crew handed out warm chocolate chip cookies as we disembarked. The bottom line for us is that this is your typical party boat. Which is fine, if that’s your thing. We were looking for more of an elegant dining experience on the lake with beautiful views of the Chicago skyline. We will not do this cruise again and luckily I used points from a work employee perks program to pay for this experience. I had a feeling this cruise would probably not be that great so using the points didn’t sting as much as paying cash for this experience. Read more Written September 24, 2023

Dine and cruise along the Chicago River in a glass-enclosed boat

The 140-foot-long Odyssey Chicago River is available for charters starting September 25

riverboat dinner cruise chicago

Starting later this month, tourists and locals will have a new way to experience the world-class architecture lining the banks of the Chicago River: a glass-roofed boat offering brunch, lunch, dinner, and cocktail-hour cruises.

The 140-foot-long Odyssey Chicago River will cater to individuals as well as private groups as large as 200. The climate-controlled vessel will offer several 2- to 3-hour cruises each day from its dock at the River Esplanade near NBC Tower.

Tickets start at $49.90 for a cocktail cruise and $109.90 for the longer dinner excursions. The latter includes a three-course meal, but customers can also splurge by adding extras like lobster tail. While there won’t be a guided narration on the Odyssey, guests can download a smartphone app if they wish to learn about Chicago’s architecture and history.

The meal service cruises were first announced in September 2017 and Odyssey Chicago River planned to start in July . However, the delayed opening date and the earliest its website will accept reservations is September 25.

The all-weather boat, under construction in Florida, will soon make it way to Chicago via the nation’s river system, according to recent report by Crain’s . The Odyssey Chicago River is operated by Entertainment Cruises, part of the Pritzker Group.

With active cruises more popular than ever, backroads adds new options.

Active travel and cruising go great together, and until recently most bike and hike trips have used ... [+] river cruise ships, like this Backroads trip with AmaWaterways.

Leisure travel has been booming across the board since the pandemic, but two areas in particular have been especially hot. Cruises, which many pundits thought might not recover, have come back stronger than ever, and the entire active travel niche has exploded in popularity, with record bookings for most of the major companies specializing in this area.

These two trends have in turn birthed a third fast-growing niche, active cruises. Traditionally guided luxury hiking, biking and multi-sport trips would stay at two or three hotels for two or three nights each, moving guests’ luggage for them as they pedaled or walked across Tuscany or Burgundy or wherever the trip was set. But many travelers have fallen in love with the concept of only unpacking and packing once, using a ship as a moveable hotel. I’ve personally done many different active trips, and this convenience is the number one reason my fellow travelers have cited for why they choose these cruise itineraries. When I did a river cruise-based cycling trip in France with luxury active travel specialist Backroads last fall, there were several longtime repeat Backroads customers on the ship who told me that while they loved the company and keep coming back, they now only do ship-based trips, because they enjoy not changing hotels throughout.

Backroads has greatly expanded its active crusie offerings on rivers and oceans, and its latest ... [+] partnership is with award-winning small luxury line Emerald and its newest ship, the Azzurra.

There are other benefits besides convenience, as guests get to combine the best of both worlds. They still get the trappings of a “regular” active vacation, with full van support each day off the ship, expert guides, high-quality bikes, carefully planned routes and varying length options mapped on GPS loaner devices. They still get the many VIP extras along the way, such as private guides for cultural and historic tours, wine tastings, special meals, cooking classes and such. But on top of the things luxury active travel specialists provide, they also get the cruise extras, like included meals when there is not a special off-ship lunch or dinner, fitness activities such as yoga classes, onboard entertainment or lectures, and the option to take part in the cruise-based itineraries, such as “regular” shore excursions, especially in the event of bad weather. If for some reason (exhaustion, weather, illness, etc.) a guest wants to skip a day of hiking or biking, they can simply stay on the ship rather than worry about moving to the next location on a land-based trip.

There are many standout operators in the upscale active travel category, and those offering multiple active cruise options include top luxury names such as Butterfield & Robinson and DuVine . But no one has embraced this category as quickly and deeply as Backroads , America’s oldest active travel company. They are also widely considered the biggest, and this is certainly the case when it comes to active cruises—10 years ago, Backroads offered zero options, and now they have more than 100 on ships of varying sizes, ocean and river, all around the globe .

Nyt strands hints spangram and answers for wednesday march 20, ranked the 20 happiest countries in the world in 2024 according to a new report.

Active travelers still get the guides, van support and all the usual Backroads bells and ... [+] whistles—plus the benefits of being on a cruise, in this case with French luxury line Ponant.

“When we pioneered the active river cruise space with AmaWaterways in 2015, I had no idea that we we’d be reinventing the cruise market,” said Tom Hale, Backroads Founder, President and CEO. “But looking back, it was a winning combination from the start. Active cruising offers that seamless sense of journey, adventure, leisure and luxury that our guests are looking for—it’s truly a unique and special way to explore the world.”

River cruises remain the core of active travel by ship, as the rooms are typically larger, disembarkation and embarkation much easier, there are virtually no seasickness issues, and almost every important city in the world sits on a river. But the concept has increasingly spilled over to the oceans, and Backroads just announced its newest collaboration, this time with Emerald Cruises , the award-winner for Best Small Ship Cruise Line from Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s annual readers’ poll.

After biking or hiking, guests can relax in the pool on the newest yachts from Emerald Cruises.

The newest just-added trip in Backroads’ Active Ocean & River Cruises collection , for 2025, is a Greece & Croatia Multi-Adventure Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik. Highlights include a bike ride to the ruins of Delphi, hiking above the UNESCO Heritage Site of Kotor, Montenegro, and kayaking in the Greek isles. Departures are aboard Emerald’s two newest yachts, the Azzurra and Sakara, small ships that pack a big punch, with amenities such as open-air bar, lounge areas, swimming pool and gym, along with a focus on gourmet cuisine.

Some bike rides end at the docks, but the fun doesn't stop there.

Emerald joins an impressive lineup of top tier luxury Backroads cruise partners. Almost all river trips, including the excellent Paris to Normandy one I did, are with award-winning AmaWaterways . Most of the oceangoing trips are with Ponant , the only French-flagged luxury cruise line, known for its excellent rooms, great service, modern and very efficient sustainability-focused small ships, and excellent cuisine. I’ve also sailed with Ponant, and it was a wonderful and intimate experience. Backroads’ water-based trips run a broad gamut from Europe to Antarctica, Polynesia to the Galápagos Islands, and Asia Pacific to the Amazon. Options have grown steadily year after year since the first river cruise in 2015, and other new adventures debuting in 2025 include a Multi-Adventure River Cruise on the Danube and an Iceland Walking & Hiking Ocean Cruise.

Additionally, because of the rapid growth and demand in the company’s active cruises category, Backroads has been able to add special departures including whole-ship active takeovers and trips specifically designed for all types of families and children, making them the only active travel company offering family trips segmented by age. They have also expanded their popular Dolce Tempo “easygoing” trips , which are less strenuous, and often use e-bikes, to the roster of active cruise options.

Active cruises trips can be hiking, cycling or multi-sport.

There are active cruises for hikers, cyclists and multi-sport enthusiasts, for hardcore athletes and laid-back travelers, for families with teens, families with younger kids, for singles, friends and couples, on rivers and oceans, and the bottom line is that Backroads simply has more active cruise options and destinations than anyone else. But it’s not just the size and scope that is important, it’s also the quality, and I have traveled repeatedly with Backroads (as well as many of their competitors, big and small), and have loved it, whether on a cruise or not. They have been doing it since 1979 and they do it very well.

A heated race likely to decide the next state’s attorney for Cook County remained too close to call early Wednesday as votes continued to be counted, including mail-in ballots that could take days to be tallied.

Eileen O’Neill Burke , who stepped down from a seat on the appellate court to run for state’s attorney, took an early lead against her opponent Clayton Harris III but the gap narrowed as the evening wore on.

As of 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, with 83% of the estimated votes counted, O’Neill Burke was leading with 51% to Harris’s 49%, according to the Associated Press. O'Neill Burke led in the suburbs by about eight points with all precincts reporting, according to the Cook County Clerk’s Office. In the city, Harris was ahead by just over two points with 1,271 of 1,291 precincts reporting.

  • Democrats appear to be leaning toward taking a tough-on-crime approach.

O'Neill Burke told her supporters in a speech late Tuesday that she was “cautiously optimistic,” but asked them to be patient and “let the democratic process play out.”

“I got into this race because I did not want to give up on Chicago,” O'Neill Burke said. “And I know tonight that I can say that none of you want to give up on Chicago, either.”

The crowd roared as Dexys Midnight Runners’ “Come On Eileen” played over the loudspeaker.

Harris, trailing by about 10,000 votes, addressed his supporters about 30 minutes later and promised to hold out until every vote was counted.

“We have waited a long time for the moment, and we are going to have to wait a little longer,” he said to cheers at Taste 222 in the West Loop.

Harris spent most of the evening sequestered in a room next to the bar with his family and pastor and a handful of campaign staff. A few supporters could be heard parsing vote tallies and the number of mail-in votes outstanding.

Toni Preckwinkle showed up late and met briefly with Harris, whom she had backed, and expressed confidence that a win was possible with mail-in votes still uncounted.

"The party does pretty well with mail-in ballots," said Preckwinkle, who noted that she won her first election by only 109 votes.

Among those at Harris' party was Anjanette Young, who was handcuffed while naked inside her home during a botched raid by Chicago police. After spending the day trying to turn out votes for Harris, Young said: “I just feel like, with how I was treated by police, that he will be someone who will hold police accountable.”

Pastor Charlie Dates of Progressive Baptist Church in Bridgeport received a long hug from the candidate.

O'Neill Burke’s campaign had used Dates’ support for Harris to claim he had “troubling, anti-choice ties” and would not be as strong on the issue of abortion rights. O'Neill Burke has promised to create a unit in the office to defend the right to abortion in the county.

Among those at Burke's party at RPM Events in River North were Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza and Ald. Bill Conway (34th), who ran unsuccessfully for state’s attorney in the last election. Conway said he was reluctant to come out supporting O'Neill Burke because he “didn’t want people to be having to defend my race.”

“I really think that office needs some change,” Conway said. “I commend Kim (Foxx) for what she said about wrongful convictions. But at the end of the day I think the most important role of the … state’s attorney is to defend victims, and I think Eileen will be able to do that.”

Whoever wins the Democratic primary election would still face a Republican and a Libertarian challenger in the general election, but a Republican has not won the state’s attorney’s office since 1992 — making the race one of the closest watched and most consequential.

The Democratic primary pitted Harris, a former political aide with the backing of the county’s Democratic Party, against O'Neill Burke, a former assistant state’s attorney and appellate court justice.

O'Neill Burke said she stepped away from the bench to run because “the criminal justice system just isn’t working right now.” She claimed rising crime in Chicago was hurting growth because people were afraid to go downtown. She has promised to end some policies of Foxx, including charging retail thefts above $300 as a felony, as opposed to the $1,000 amount set by Foxx’s office.

Harris said his years of experience working in statewide offices and as an aide to former Mayor Richard M. Daley and ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich would help recruit new talent. Harris was vague about his policy goals but said he would largely continue Foxx’s policies.

The race was expected to be a referendum on the legacy of Foxx, who was part of the first wave of so-called progressive prosecutors to be elected across the country. Foxx announced last year she would not seek a third term, despite winning her races handily both times.

In 2016, Foxx beat the incumbent, Democrat Anita Alvarez, after the uproar over the Laquan McDonald police shooting. Foxx then won reelection despite widespread criticism of her decision to drop charges against actor Jussie Smollett after he faked a hate crime attack against himself and lied about it to police.

O'Neill Burke sought to distance herself from Foxx — but not too far. The former judge talked tough on crime, including claiming her office would seek to hold more people in custody under the SAFE-T Act, which eliminated cash bail in Illinois last year.

Unlike O'Neill Burke, Harris said he supported Foxx’s policies and hoped to build on them. Harris argued the managerial skills picked up from his time in public and private sectors made him the best person to lead the state’s attorney’s sprawling office after Foxx.
