Hatteras Marlin Club

The Hatteras Marlin Club was founded in 1959. The club provides its members a private social club with full services and facilities. The membership is by invitation only. Our current membership is 215 active members. Invitations are issued by two sponsoring active members.

We are thrilled to announce the completion of the expansion and renovation of the HMC Clubhouse! We welcome our Members back and can't wait for you to come visit. Part of this remodel included moving our dining facilities to the second floor where members and their guests will be able to enjoy a fabulous dinner and take in the breathtaking views and spectacular sunsets on the Pamlico Sound. The downstairs area provides a more casual setting and is a protected social and recreational area where families can gather out of the elements. This new Clubhouse is something every Member will be proud to be a part of.

Dinners are available to Members and their guests by calling in a reservation on Friday and Saturday nights during the season. Click on the Menu tab here on the website for available selections. In addition, members will receive a weekly email reminder along with weekly specials! You may call us at 252-986-2454 for more information and to make reservations.

Hatteras Sailing hosts first annual one design regatta

Twenty sailing teams from three different yacht clubs competed in the First Annual Cape Hatteras Lighthouse One Design Regatta hosted by Hatteras Sailing recently.

“Weather for sailing was astounding!” stated a press release from Hatteras Sailing. “Visitors and local Hatteras sailors raved about having a great time at this first time one design sailing event for Hatteras Island.”

During the event on Saturday morning, Morgan Johnson, a mother of two young sailors from Hampton Yacht Club posted, “What a great Opti day!!! Hatteras Sailing Organization rolled out the red carpet (with a) Morning surf session followed by great racing followed by a band and pit cooked BBQ!  Let Monday never come, we are staying!!”

Typically, a regatta is not only sailing, but also includes parties, meals and entertainment, states Hatteras Sailing: “Regattas are fun travel events for not just the sailors but also for their families and friends. Over the last 2 years, Hatteras sailors have been traveling to regattas in the Chesapeake Bay, learning the ropes, and networking with other competitors. The Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association hosts the closest regattas and is home to some of the best junior sailors in the World.”

Jay Phillips, Hatteras Sailing chairman and head coach, said, “We were honored that acquaintances our team made when we traveled to the Hampton Yacht Club’s Junior Olympic Festival came to Hatteras and joined in the fun here. It just makes sense. Hatteras itself is a fantastic draw for Chesapeake sailors, especially with our well known winds.”

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Regatta was organized into a three-day format with a variety of activities that reflected the local beauty and appeal of Hatteras Island. Organizers created a schedule that mixed in favorite beach activities, including a beach bonfire party, morning beach yoga led by local yogi Mary Syrrist and a surf session sponsored by Endless Summer Surf Camp OBX.

“Surfing and sailing – it’s all about seamanship. Learning to sail will help make better surfers, and I bet learning to surf will make better sailors. It all works together. We want to be involved in just helping the local kids learn better seamanship,” said Morgan O’Connell, founder of Endless Summer Surf OBX.

Hatteras Sailing debuted its 420 One Design Fleet at the regatta. Last Saturday’s racing began with the 420 class in the morning. After a short lunch break, sponsored by Amy Hakola of Wild Flour Kitchens, the Opti Fleet raced four events in the afternoon. Sunday, the classes flipped places so the visiting Opti teams could finish up racing before traveling back home to Virginia.

The optimist class is a single-handed boat designed for sailors from 5 to 15 years old and up to 120 lbs. There were 16 optimists racing, and Avon local Connor Hakola took the second place trophy while Finley Webster from Hampton Yacht Club took first place. Deltaville, Va. sailor Henry Latell finished third.

“The Hampton and Deltaville sailors have an advantage being from much older and more established organizations with full time salaried junior coaches, but some of our local sailors are holding their own and moving up in the ranks,” stated the release.

On Sunday, the wind picked up and the Hatteras sailors showed a home court advantage, as they often practice in higher winds, but the Chesapeake summers are known for light wind sailing conditions. Hatteras Sailing is its second year, while Fishing Bay Yacht Club is an 85 year old organization. Hampton Yacht Club is even older, located on the waterfront in downtown Hampton, Va.

The racecourse was packed tightly with 17 little boats all striving to sail fastest.

Immediately following the racing, an outdoor barbecue party began on the lawn at the new Hatteras Sailing Center on Buxton Harbor. Chip Hammock spent the entire day for 10 hours smoking the barbecue pork to perfection thanks to the use of Tater Gaskins of Hatteras Island Air who was kind enough to loan the club his large wood cooker. Kinnakeet favorite, Jim Hagy, blessed the evening with great live music.  “It is much more affordable for our local sailors to bring the competition to us, and it also creates great potential for organization fundraising, not to mention simply creating our own version of Hatteras Island Sailing fun,” comments Nathan Snead, local coach and Vice Chair of the Organization.

Thanks to local sponsors, Hatteras Sailing acquired five 420 sailboats this summer and started developing teams for these “exciting and challenging” one design boats. Last year, Hatteras Sailing only featured the Optimist for training, which limited opportunities to only the youngest sailors. Now with the 420, older teens and adults can join in the fun. The 420 is the standard college and high school international sailing class and there are opportunities for experienced local 420 sailors to participate at the varsity collegiate level as they consider their future college options.

Primary sponsors for this event include Wild Flour Kitchens, Endless Summer Surf OBX, Kill Devil Rum, OBX Spices, Avon Cedar, Phillips Boatworks, MSP Media, Pamlico Sailing, Geoff Grisham, Chip and Vida Hammock, Food Lion and Third Stone Graphics.

“Feedback from visiting competitors has been incredibly enthusiastic,” said Phillips. “People love coming to Hatteras for vacation, and now with a fully operating junior sailing program, visitors can look forward to sail training and competitive events at their favorite vacation spot!”

Over the coming winter months, the board is putting together opportunities for the junior sailors to go out with local commercial fishermen on Hatteras Island. “Preserving local maritime heritage and commercial fishing is an increasing challenge with regulatory restrictions. Hatteras Sailing wants to inspire the youth of Hatteras to carry on these generational traditions and fishing licenses,” said Phillips.

Started in 2019, Hatteras Sailing is a non-profit community organization with the mission to nurture sailing opportunities and maritime heritage opportunities for local Hatteras Island youth “via long term consistent programming and sailing opportunities.” Each eight-week seasonal session has averaged participation from 25 local youth partitioned into classes of different skill levels starting at the age of 7 through 18 years of age. Hatteras Sailing adds high school and middle school 420 Class sailboats to the local youth sailing program

Hatteras Community Sailing adds 5 of the internationally recognized 420 Class sailboats for local high school and college athletes. Talented local youth can now be regionally, nationally, and internationally competitive in the 420 Sailing One Design Class thanks to the sponsors – Hatteras Island Air, OBX Spice Company, Phillips Boatworks, and MSP-Media – who provided the boats for the program.

The 420 is a small and athletic sailboat sailed by a 2-person team, and is recognized worldwide as the standard class of high school and collegiate sailing teams. Hatteras now has five 420 Class sailboats conveniently located at Buxton Harbor just a few yards from the Cape Hatteras Secondary School.

One design sailing unlocks competitive talent and opens opportunities for young sailors.  One design sailing is sailboat racing in identical boats. Similar to Nascar, the sailing classes write rules for the boat design, the rigging, and certify the manufacturers that build boats for the racing class. Sailing within a one design class such as the high school and collegiate International 420 Class is just like other sports. It has identical positions on each team, standard rules, skills in each position, an easily understood scoring system, fouls and penalties, coaches, and umpires  just as better known sports. 420 Class sailing has an established competition schedule with regional, national, and international awards. There is even a compatible Olympic class to which 420 sailors aspire, the 470.

Any athletic and competitive young person growing up here on Hatteras Island can consider sailing as their sport of choice. Sailing is a lifelong sport even at its highest level of professional competition, and is a sport that our local geography supports in ways that give our local youth a competitive advantage. Our home, Hatteras Island, is surrounded by water and our winds are second to none. We have consistent and strong wind compared with places like Scandinavia, San Francisco, The Gorge, The Caribbean Tradewinds, etc.

Hatteras Community Sailing is a member of US Sailing, the governing organization of sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing at the local and olympic level. Many of our local residents earn their family’s income in these sports, and we are able to train the next generation in ways that yacht clubs located in Urban areas just cannot. “We are sitting in the exact right location, the perfect conditions, and we’re surrounded by internationally recognized talent in these sports – there is just no reason we shouldn’t see our local youth rise to the highest honors”, says Jay Phillips, head coach and Chairman of the Hatteras Community Sailing Board.

420 Sailing registration is open

420 Sailing registration is now open for the Fall Session. The Fall Session will run for 8 weeks starting on Sept 4 at our new location in Buxton Harbor.  There is a wait list if more than 10 sailors want to try out the new 420 Class Sailing. The weekly practice is 2-4 hours of group coaching each weekend with mid-week opportunities for supervised practice.

The 420 requires a 2 person team of a skipper and crew.  Very often the crew position is filled by an athlete new to sailing, but who is confident on the water. The crew position involves less experience and understanding of the strategy and tactics, but is a fun position that includes a hiking harness for leaning out on a trapeze.  Typically, the skipper of the boat needs to be a more seasoned and competitive sailor. Sailing small boats like this is a wet sport requiring spray protection, wetsuits, boots, gloves, sunglasses, etc.  420s are often sailed with just the mainsail and jib, but in interscholastic and collegiate competition there is a third sail called a spinnaker.

Head coach, Jay Phillips, says, “I learned in my experience racing larger yachts in Annapolis, Newport, Charleston and the BVI that 420 Sailors tend to make the best crew, helmsman, tacticians, and all-around sailors. When I am putting together a winning big-boat team, I’m always happy to add talented 420 sailors.” There is no limit for a talented 420 sailor. Many of the America’s Cup team members competed in the 420 Class.

Colleges, universities, and academies often offer scholarships to talented sailors.  Sailing is a varsity sport at the USCG Academy and the Naval Academy as well as UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, and St. Mary’s College.  Within just the second season of operation, local youth from  Hatteras Sailing have competed in the 2021 US Sailing Chesapeake Bay Junior Olympics Festival, Fishing Bay One Design Regatta, and the Manteo One Design Regatta.  Hatteras Sailors won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Optimist class at the Manteo One Design Regatta in July of this year.

While the cost to sustain a sailing program can be high, Hatteras Sailing aims to keep membership and participation fees low and in line with other local sports opportunities. Hatteras Yachts is turning 60 and United Yacht Sales invites you to RSVP for the celebration. On September 27th and 28th, Hatteras owners, enthusiasts, and industry partners are invited to the New Bern, North Carolina factory for the Hatteras Club Experience. Sea trials of the latest models and in-depth factory tours will take place for all that gives a glimpse into the rich history that is Hatteras Yachts. Gourmet food and craft cocktails will be served! And yes, the new Cabo Yachts 41 Express will also be in attendance.

Hatteras LRC Club

Starting in 1959 and continuing for 35 years, Jack Hargrave designed dozens of motor yachts and convertibles for Hatteras Yachts. In the mid-1970s, the OPEC oil embargo hit home, and it hit yachtsmen especially hard. One of the solutions was the Hatteras series of Long Range Cruisers from 42 to 65 feet, all designed by Hargrave. These displacement-hull yachts had smaller engines to power the boats at lower speeds and were suitable for extended cruising to remote sites (and sights). For a man who got his start with Rybovich and designed so many successful convertibles over the years, little Jack wasn’t much for sportfishing. These shippy little cruising yachts were closer to his heart. A feeling shared by the members of the Hatteras LRC Club, which was established in 1985.

Hatteras Sailing Organization

Hatteras Community Sailing Organization is a NC non-profit corporation and a US Sailing Community Sailing foundation and is a 5013(c) US registered non-profit corporation.

Hatteras Community Sailing provides sailing instruction and competition to youth and adults on Hatteras Island, NC to inspire independence, seamanship, and respect for nature.  We provide lessons, classes, and camps to teach sailing, water safety, boat safety, and boat maintenance.   We sponsor local and regional sailing competitions to promote the sport and use sailing is a foundation on which to grow skill, discipline, character, and self-confidence in local Hatteras Island youth and adults.

HCS nurtures skilled and confident sailors to be a lifelong credit to Hatteras Community Sailing and the larger Cape Hatteras and Outer Banks Communities. Hatteras Sailing is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors.

We think it is really healthy to be outside in real life and in nature, and we happen to be blessed enough to live on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Our youth and adult sailing programs enjoy year round sailing socials, events, and diverse wind and sea conditions.

Our youth and adults are encouraged to take out the boats as often as they can, to sail together, respect nature, and enjoy our beautiful ocean and sound. We make safety and socializing a priority and emphasize having fun in real life.

Jay Phillips has been sailing professionally for more than 30 years, and has a passion to pass his love for this life-building sport onto new, young sailors. “We can’t really spare any effort grounding our next generation to the earth, the sea, and the creator”, says Jay on why he founded Hatteras Sailing. “Sailing is a great way to get kids in touch and engaged with their environment”

Jay Crawford holds a USCG Masters License, 25-ton and a BS in Physical Education/Leisure Services from Winthrop University, South Carolina. Jay has been living, breathing and coaching kiteboarding on Hatteras Island since the early days. Flying Naish product since 1999, Jay has worked with and learned from the pioneers. He spends winters in “Shacks Beach”, Puerto Rico, or Heavenly Ski Resort, California, to further expand his teaching knowledge.

Billy Mosley of Winward Homes

Billy Mosley is a long time Nags Head resident, avid sailor, kiter, and windsurfer. He loves Hobie Cat sailing, surfing, and the Outer Banks and is the president of Winward Homes.

Tater Gaskins of Hatteras Island Air

Tater, the owner of Hatteras Island Air, having grown up here on Hatteras feels that sailing is a natural fit for Hatteras and Hatteras Island Youth. “I’m very interested in the physics of sailing. Knots are cool”, says Tater. Like Chip, Tater is interested in learning sailing as he mentors his own son, Ellis, in survival skills and outdoor activities.
