Migaloo: The $2 Billion Superyacht Submarine

migaloo private submersible superyachts

Migaloo , an Austrian enterprise, has introduced a pioneering concept in hybrid diesel/electric submarine yachts, under the banner of Migaloo Private Submersible Yachts.

In January 2024, Migaloo revealed its latest innovation, the Migaloo M5, a 165.8-meter submersible superyacht.

Engineered for both tropical and arctic environments, the Migaloo M5 boasts the capability to submerge to a depth of 250 meters for approximately four weeks.

Christian Gumpold, CEO of Migaloo, expressed his belief in the burgeoning category of submersible superyachts, stating, “In addition to motor yachts and sailboats, I believe submersible superyachts will become an additional category of private vessels for owners to choose from.”

If yacht owners really want to put everyone at port to shame, they should consider sailing on the Migaloo Private Submersible Yacht. A concept yacht created by Migaloo, an Austrian design and engineering firm, the line of luxury superyachts offers a range of bespoke underwater crafts that vary in size. After sailing the new Migaloo submersible yacht on the water, owners can close up the decks and turn the craft into a fully operational submarine.

“What we are attempting to do is to create a living space where exterior and interior interact in harmony,” says Christian Gumpold, managing director and head of design at Migaloo. With rooms that open to the ocean for dining alfresco while above water, and large viewing galleries for taking in the marine life when submersed, the Migaloo creates that harmony. What’s more, the firm reaffirms its focus on luxury with optional amenities that include helipads, swimming pools, movie theaters, elevators, wine cellars, libraries, and private terraces.

Of course, safety is a major focal point as well. Each superyacht will be built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards, which ensure that the interiors will stay watertight and the vessel can recover from unanticipated flooding. According to Migaloo, solitude is a major point of interest for yacht owners, which is why the ability to dive beneath the surface and out of view might have great appeal. “Privacy is a big issue on superyachts,” says Gumpold, “our answer to this concern is simply submerging the vessel into complete privacy.”

The Migaloo M5 Submersible Superyacht under water

As impressive as all that may read, we’re only scratching the surface. Migaloo is billing the M5 as the world’s first luxury submersible superyacht. The Graz-based firm promises it will go all out to deliver the sort of amenities its ultra-ultra-rich clientele expect. It intends to work with customers to design the interior of their dreams, but they can expect an opulent dining room with room for 36 guests and panoramic glass walls, a curated wine cellar, and a technologically advanced cinema. There will also be two swimming pools, a jacuzzi and—because this is a superyacht we’re talking about—a helipad.

When the M5 is surfaced, there is also a healthy stable of water toys for the owner and their guests to enjoy. These include five Sea-Doo Jet-Skis, Seabobs, Zapata Racing flyboards and hoverboards, and everything else you need for paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and kayaking. There are also two custom Midget-Submarines, two submersibles, and several ROVs and UUVs. There’s little risk of getting bored onboard the M5.

Migaloo PSY reveals 166m submersible superyacht concept Migaloo M5

Migaloo PSY (Private Submersible Yachts) has revealed a 165.8-metre submersible superyacht concept known as Migaloo M5. Suitable in both tropical and arctic conditions, the Migaloo M5 is designed to be fully submerged at a depth of 250 metres for approximately four weeks.

"In addition to motor yachts and sailing yachts, I believe that submersible superyachts will become an additional category of private vessels that owners can choose from," said Migaloo PSY CEO Christian Gumpold.

The Migaloo M5 benefits from 1,000 square metres of interior space, with 220 square metres dedicated to the owner. Accommodation is between 14-20 guests and 32-40 crew, dependent on the owners' preference in ratio.

Leisure highlights include a spa (measuring 200 square metres), an outdoor cinema, a helipad, helicopter hangar and two "Midget Submarines" for further deep sea exploration. For surface and land cruising, the yacht also comes with a 12.5-metre limousine tender and two expedition vehicles, alongside an extensive collection of water toys.

"Key partners, such as the shipyard, are up to the owners’ preferences. But the team is able to supervise all partners during engineering, building, sea trials and outfitting, up to handover to the owner [and] including after sales services and yacht management," explained a Migaloo PSY spokesperson.

The development of special knowledge training for captains and crew can also be managed by the company.

The Migaloo M5 is expected to have a range of over 8,000 nautical miles, with a speed of 20 knots when surfaced and 12 knots when submerged.

That 'Private Submersible Superyacht' Is Almost Certainly Never Going To Happen

You've heard of yacht clubs, but how about yacht subs .

Image for article titled That 'Private Submersible Superyacht' Is Almost Certainly Never Going To Happen

Over the past few months, a number of outlets have made a big deal about the Migaloo M5 “submersible superyacht,” a 544-foot luxury submarine meant to let the world’s richest folks get away from it all . There’s a side to the story that isn’t often covered, though: Migaloo doesn’t appear to have ever built a submarine, let alone one that costs $2 billion .

Despite the amount of press Migaloo receives, there’s no record of any orders shipped to customers, or even orders placed with the company. In fact, the Austrian company database doesn’t list any corporations by the name of “Migaloo” in the country — a company which, it’s worth remembering, is landlocked.

Migaloo’s website dates back to 2013, according to WHOIS records , but the oldest version archived is from 2015. Back then, the company was offering “submersible superyachts” in cooperation with a company called Starkad Technologies OÜ, which provided “technical development.” Starkad does show up in Estonian business records , but the company’s 2023 annual report shows just one employee — and an annual operating budget of just under $2,700. The company’s official contact email is a Hotmail account.

Migaloo is the brainchild of Christian Gumpold, the company’s CEO and only listed employee on LinkedIn . Christian made a name for himself designing renders of luxury boats and impossible trains , a skill that appears to have served him well when creating Migaloo. Each of the company’s submarine offerings are presented in render form, and the company’s YouTube page is full of 30-second clips showing pictures of submarines moving through pictures of water. Most are simply titled “MIGALOO Private Submersible Superyachts,” but special credit goes to the descriptively-titled 11-second “Water.”

Rather than creating actual submarines for the world’s richest few, Migaloo appears to create pictures of submarines for magazines read by those richest few (and, of course, NFTs .) It’s unclear what the company would even do if a Bezos or a Musk called them up with $2 billion in hand — it’s unlikely a single person in Estonia could actually assemble anything the company proffers.

The Migaloo M5 is not a real luxury submarine. It’s a picture of a submarine, drawn by someone who draws very nice pictures of luxury items. Don’t expect any more than that.

Migaloo is the famous albino humpback that is occasionally spotted passing through Byron Bay, but Migaloo is also a design and superyacht company that boasts of offering  “private submersible superyachts, innovative superyachts & floating islands [that] are the world’s most exclusive products.”

migaloo private submersible superyachts

Migaloo, founded by Austrian Christian Gumpold, claims to be the future of luxury yachting and, perhaps more to the point, of being able to offer the world’s multi-millionaires and billionaires that ever-elusive sense of privacy they must feel their superyachts can no longer deliver. In reality, Migaloo offers concepts, ideas, renders and, as of recently, NFTs. Vaporware, you might call it.

Be that as it may, one thing you can’t fault Migaloo for is the ability to dream big. Really big. As big as the Migaloo M7 private submersible superyacht introduced a few years ago, which remains the world’s largest (submersible) superyacht design and the most expensive privately-owned asset. Both honors are still on paper, so here’s to hoping you’re in the mood for an outrageous (rich person’s) dream.

migaloo private submersible superyachts

Just so we’re clear, not a single submersible superyacht from the M-Series from Migaloo exists beyond the digital realm. The closest you can come to owning any of the various-size superyachts that are also submarines is if you buy an NFT (non-fungible token) of it. You’d still not be able to go anywhere with it, it goes without saying.

The M7 is the biggest and fanciest in the series, a 283-meter (930-foot) monster of a vessel that’s meant to offer the best of everything. It’s can travel at a speed of 32 knots (36.8 mph / 60 kph) when on the surface, or a brisk 21 knots (24 mph / 39 kph) underwater. It can go as deep as 457 meters (1,500 feet), and has a design inspired by modern Zumwalt-class destroyers, but infused with the classic styling of modern superyachts.

Designed for the billionaire for whom a multi-million megayacht is too basic and for whom the desire for privacy trumps even financial common sense, the M7 offers accommodation for 12 guests across eight VIP suites, and a crew of 25 in separate quarters. The owner’s suite sits on a private deck and offers a total of 2,100 square meters (22,604 square feet) of living area, appointed luxuriously.

migaloo private submersible superyachts

Amenities on board include spa and wellness area, fully-equipped gym, cinema, dining rooms, bars, lounges and underwater viewing rooms, as well as a helicopter hangar, jacuzzis and pool, and an entire hoard of water and underwater toys packed inside six dry hangars. This is very much a cliché, but as far as amenities go, if you can think it, it’s on board the M7. Moreover, the owner gets the final say in terms of design, features and the final layout, so that the resulting vessel will be truly a one-off.

“Owners are looking for privacy, security and protection for themselves, their guests and their valuables, or for the fulfillment of unique experiences up to scientific desires as well as for the greatest possible exclusivity and limitation,”  Gumpold says. It should come in an exclusive package.

When sailing above the water surface, the M7 acts very much like a megayacht, opening up to offer alfresco entertainment areas and quick access to water. The vessel shutters for underwater mode, with the hull built to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards. Speaking of safety, Gumpold told  Bloomberg  back in 2017 that every safety feature imaginable would be included. This apparently includes 12 surface-to-air missiles and 12 MU90 antitorpedo – we live in very dangerous times. Propulsion would be hybrid diesel-electric.

Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

Superyacht Takes A Dive With Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

' src=

Forget about two-man submarine. If you really want to explore the deep blue sea and marvel at the expansive ocean, Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts are your best bet. Mind you, we are not talking about some teeny weeny submarines here. We are talking about submarine that’s way larger than an Ohio class sub of the U.S. Navy. Yes. That Ohio class. While your fellow richie rich are chilling out on the deck of their multimillion yachts, you can surprise them with one of these luxury sub from beneath. Now, wouldn’t that be fun? They will probably choke on their martinis when this behemoth breaks out of the water.

Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

Billed as the world’s first private submersible super yachts (yup, that’s what Migaloo is calling them), five models are currently being offered with lengths ranging from a modest 72 m to an insane 283 m. For most part, Migaloo’s proposed opulent watercraft works much like a yacht, but the boon of it is, when you get tired of the sun and surface water, or when the rough weather approaches, you can choose to dive down and stay below the waterline and admire the tranquility the deep blue has to offer.

Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

Most of the models resemble military subs, but it of course, wears a different paint jobs and sports on-the-deck amenities which could include pool/jacuzzi, sundeck, platform for smaller watercraft and more, and unlike military examples, stealth is not necessary and hence, it has a boatload of windows so you could enjoy the underwater scenery. That said, with so many windows ( aka weak points) we doubt it will be able to dive too deep. In any case, Migaloo did not detail the maximum depth, but I am sure if you are going to drop insane amount of money for one, you will ask, right?

Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

Migaloo partners with Starkad Technologies to engineer and build these bespoke submersible super yachts and according to Migaloo, each sub is built according to class, flag and according to U.S. Navy SUBSAFE safety standards. Speaking of safety standards, all Migaloo’s sub touts an acrylic hull design which is said to provide maximum safety and “incomparable large deck spaces.” So, it is not going to be like combat sub that has tight narrow spaces.

Migaloo M-Series Private Submersible Yachts

Like most bespoke and ridiculously opulent watercraft, Migaloo’s offerings has customizable interior allow for facilities like restaurant and bar setup for up 26 guests, conference and/or business layout, or just simply a rich man’s private yacht layout, if that’s what you desire. The choice of what goes into it is only limited by your imagination and your power to spend.

We have no idea how much the submersible super yacht will cost, but rest assured that the sticker will be out-of-this-world for ordinary mortals. And no, it doesn’t have compartments for Trident missiles, and there will be no torpedo tubes either. And oh, if island is more of your cuppa, Migaloo is more than willing to build you one Kokomo Ailand. I am more of a sub person, so if you will excuse me, I will need to check my bank account to see if I have millions to drop.

U.S. Eyes $156 Million Yacht in Dubai Linked to a Russian Oligarch

The U.S. Justice Department is taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, a 324-foot luxury yacht, but it will be diplomatically thorny.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — On a clear morning in late October, the jewel-blue hull of the Madame Gu, one of the world’s most luxurious superyachts, gleamed, its aluminum rails shimmering in the sun. Workers on the pier said they had recently seen people painting, cleaning and generally keeping the ship with its helipad and six guest staterooms in pristine condition.

In past years, such a scene would not have been noteworthy. Many superyachts come and go from Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina, best known as the home of the Queen Elizabeth 2, the trans-Atlantic ocean liner-turned-hotel that dominates the waterfront here.

But Russia’s war in Ukraine has turned an otherwise routine tableau into a diplomatic battleground between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, an important American ally that has established itself as a safe haven for Russian money and assets out of the reach of U.S. sanctions.

The $156 million Madame Gu epitomizes the problem. In June, the United States designated the vessel, which is linked to Andrei Skoch, a Russian steel magnate and lawmaker under sanctions, as blocked property. That means the yacht cannot use American companies for its upkeep, employ U.S. citizens or even use the dollar. The Justice Department is now taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, according to people with knowledge of the plan.

But the United States can’t seize property in a sovereign nation without permission from its government. The Emirates, which has taken a friendlier position toward Moscow, is balking at cooperating with the United States to pursue oligarchs, American officials said. The Kremlin is also using oligarch-controlled companies in the Emirates to acquire war supplies that the West is trying to keep out of Russia’s reach, according to a Western official involved in the sanctions effort against Russia.

Emirati officials did not comment specifically on the Madame Gu but said in a statement that they took their role “protecting the integrity of the global financial system extremely seriously.”

A closer examination of Russian assets in the Emirates shows that even before the war in Ukraine, Dubai had become a playground for Russians with links to President Vladimir V. Putin. At least 38 businessmen or officials with ties to the Russian president own homes in Dubai that are collectively valued at more than $314 million, according to the Center for Advanced Defense Studies. Five of those owners are under U.S. sanctions.

Since the Russian invasion, Dubai has established itself as a safe haven for Russian yachts and aircraft unable to sail or fly elsewhere. After Russian jets were barred from the European Union in late February, the Emirates became the destination for 14 percent of all private flights leaving Russia, up from 3 percent before the invasion.

“It’s frustrating when you see huge assets that are sitting out there and it appears that the country is not cooperating,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, referring to the Emirates. “It would be nice if there were more common cause against Putin while he’s busy shelling hospitals and schools.”

Mr. Whitehouse is sponsoring legislation that would use proceeds of the sales of seized Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine. Senior officials at the Treasury and State Departments have also complained publicly about the situation.

U.S. officials view the presence of superyachts in places like Dubai and Bodrum, Turkey , as a symptom of wider Russian circumvention of sanctions and continued access to financial markets. Yachts have also come to symbolize the decadence of Russia’s oligarchs, especially at a time when Russian soldiers are scrounging for body armor and sleeping bags on the front lines.

Pursuing the Madame Gu

Built by the Dutch firm Feadship and put into service in 2013, the Madame Gu has a large helicopter pad on its forecastle with a hangar underneath that can double as a squash court when the chopper isn’t on board. The vessel has berthing for 36 crew members, according to one trade magazine.

Mr. Skoch, a member of Russia’s Parliament who is linked to assets worth billions of dollars, according to U.S. court filings, has had sanctions imposed on him twice by the United States, first in 2018 and then after Russia’s invasion this year. The Treasury Department has cited his “longstanding ties to Russian organized criminal groups.”

Mr. Skoch could not be reached and did not respond to messages left at his office at Parliament.

In an interview in October about the government’s broader efforts to go after the assets of oligarchs, Andrew Adams, a federal prosecutor leading the Department of Justice’s KleptoCapture task force, declined to discuss the Madame Gu. But the United States, he said, is warning companies they must not do business with individuals and assets under sanctions. The government, he said, will pursue oligarch-owned assets whose sale could be used to aid Ukraine.

“Where we know there is an asset that can potentially provide significant remuneration for Ukraine, that obviously is an attractive case to pursue,” he said.

U.S. officials are likely to use the case they made for impounding a $90 million Airbus business jet linked to Mr. Skoch in August as a blueprint for seizing the Madame Gu, said people familiar with the plan.

That means investigators will aim to show that the owner of the vessel, or the companies that have been providing services to it, have intersected with the U.S. financial system.

“If there are U.S. dollars or a U.S. nexus associated with supporting this vessel, massive enforcement actions could take place,” said Adam M. Smith, a former official overseeing sanctions at the Treasury Department. Companies that provide support to entities under sanctions could potentially face their own sanctions, said Mr. Smith, who is now a lawyer at Gibson Dunn in Washington.

This year the United States has carried out two high-profile seizures of yachts tied to Russians under sanctions, working with cooperative governments. The $300 million Amadea was taken in Fiji in May and sailed to San Diego under an American flag. In April, the United States worked with Spanish police to seize the $90 million Tango.

A Problematic Partner

Diplomatically, the Emirates has been reluctant to take a clear anti-Russian position when it comes to the war in Ukraine. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, recently met with Mr. Putin in St. Petersburg, and the Emirati foreign minister recently hosted his Russian counterpart. Yet Sheikh Mohammed has also talked with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, more than once and recently gave the country $100 million in humanitarian aid.

The United States has publicly expressed dismay over the mixed messages.

During a visit to Dubai in June, Wally Adeyemo, the U.S. deputy treasury secretary, warned of the need for vigilance and proactive steps in combating Russian evasion. That same month Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s under secretary for Near East Affairs, said at a congressional hearing that regarding the Emirates, she was “not happy at all with the record at this point” on sanctions enforcement. Mr. Adeyemo reiterated his concerns in a meeting with Emirati officials in October in Washington.

A senior State Department official said in a statement to The New York Times that the agency continues “to reinforce the importance of conducting enhanced due diligence to prevent sanctions evasion and investigating allegations of such activity” to the Emirates.

The Treasury Department declined to comment on the Madame Gu or the relationship with the Emirates.

Last month, the Treasury Department announced it had placed sanctions on an Emirates-based company, Constellation Advisors Ltd., that the American government said was operating on behalf of a nephew of another Russian oligarch, Suleiman Kerimov. Mr. Kerimov, according to American court documents, was the owner of the Amadea superyacht .

American officials are also worried the Russian government is using the Emirates to acquire military supplies for its war in Ukraine. On Nov. 15, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two Emirates-based transportation firms that had worked with another Iranian firm under sanctions, which in turn had helped transport drones and personnel from Iran to Russia.

Moored in Dubai

Based on a recent visit to Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina , where the Madame Gu is moored, it is clear that international companies are playing a critical role in its care.

The Emirates-based company DP World, through its subsidiary P&O Marinas , oversees the pier where the Madame Gu is moored. Employees from another DP World subsidiary , World Security, staff the small guard box at the entrance. That makes DP World, which is owned by Dubai’s royal family, potentially vulnerable to American sanctions.

DP World “fully complies with all applicable local and national laws and intends to continue doing the same regarding the Madame Gu and other vessels utilizing our services,” said Adal Mirza, a spokesman for the company. He added that DP World had not yet heard from the United States or other countries that had placed Mr. Skoch under sanctions, including Britain and the European Union.

A generator set that dock workers said in late October was powering the Madame Gu — two container-like structures near its stern — bore the distinctive orange logo of Aggreko , a British company. The generator set was connected to the superyacht by thick cords; one of the containers was emitting grayish exhaust.

At the Mina Rashid Marina, soon after Aggreko was contacted by The Times, workers removed the generator. “Having identified that the generator was being used to power a vessel that is allegedly connected to a sanctioned person, we immediately terminated this rental and have since recovered the generator,” the company said in a statement.

Mr. Mirza, the DP World spokesman, said the Aggreko generator had been replaced with one from a local supplier.

P&O Marinas arranged for the diesel generator to provide power for the Madame Gu because that part of the pier, a holding area, has no shore-supplied electric power, said a port official in Dubai, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press.

“At the end of the day, if the U.A.E. hasn’t imposed sanctions, it’s not really their job to enforce other countries’ laws within their borders,” said Nabeel Yousef, a Washington-based partner at the law firm Freshfields, where he runs the sanctions practice. Nevertheless, “companies should not take comfort in the fact that their country has not imposed sanctions,” he added, “because even the smallest connection to the U.S. can lead to U.S. penalties.”

There has also been a notable absence onboard the Madame Gu in recent weeks: a flag. Unlike other ships moored nearby, including the Quantum Blue, a superyacht linked to the billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the Madame Gu appears to be stateless, apparently having been deflagged by the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Islands officials didn’t respond to an emailed inquiry about the ship’s status.

If DP World were to face fallout from U.S. sanctions enforcers, it wouldn’t be the first time the company has been the focus of attention in Washington. In 2006, DP World was seeking to manage some terminal operations at six American ports but dropped out of the deal after a bipartisan uproar in Congress.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Ukraine fired a volley of exploding drones  at Moscow and other targets on the final day of Russia’s presidential vote, the local authorities said, continuing a flurry of attacks timed for the rubber-stamp election .

The United States and six other major world powers warned Iran not to provide ballistic missiles to Russia  to aid Moscow’s war against Ukraine and threatened to retaliate if it did by cutting off Iranian air travel to Europe, among other measures.

A U.N. commission said it had uncovered new evidence of widespread torture of Ukrainian prisoners  held by Russian security forces, detailing a range of what it described as Russian war crimes, including summary executions and sexual violence.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .

Electronic Warfare: Drones have become a critical weapon for both Russia and Ukraine. But Moscow’s capability to overpower Ukrainian signals  by broadcasting on the same frequencies at higher power is putting Kyiv at a disadvantage.

Helping the War Effort: Since the early days of the war, thousands of Ukrainian volunteers have led crowdfunding efforts that have been crucial in supplying the military with equipment. But as the conflict drags on, it is becoming harder to raise money .
