Why the Mercedes F1 team is getting involved in yacht racing

The Mercedes Formula One team has joined forces with British sailor Ben Ainslie in a quest to win the America's Cup for Great Britain's Royal Yacht Squadron.

The America's Cup is the oldest international trophy in sport, predating the Olympics by 45 years, but has not been won by a British team since it was first held as a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851. The Ineos Britannia team, skippered by Ainslie, hopes to change that by working closely with British-based Mercedes team to build a yacht capable of defeating the current holders, Emirates Team New Zealand.

The link-up between the two teams comes via Ineos, which owns a third of the F1 team and is the main backer of Ineos Britannia. The sailing team will be based at Mercedes' headquarters in Brackley, leaning on the engineering resources of various departments via the F1 team's Mercedes Applied Science division.

Mercedes is expecting to have as many as 50 people working on the early design process of the yacht once the regulations, date and location for the 37th America's Cup are agreed in mid-November by New Zealand and Great Britain. Mercedes' chief technical officer, James Allison, who recently took a step back from the F1 side of the company, will be the technical lead on the yacht project.

Shouldn't Mercedes be focusing on F1, not yachts?

While the project has an obvious commercial tie-up via Ineos, Mercedes is also keen to make the project work for the engineering benefit of the F1 team. The America's Cup is often known as 'F1 on water', and clear links can be made between the hydrodynamics that allow a racing yacht to "fly" on its foils in the sea and the aerodynamics that keep an F1 car pinned to the track.

But Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says the joint project will offer more than just a new revenue stream for the team through Mercedes Applied Science.

"We have had situations where engineers said, we have done this for seven years -- and many were even longer -- with seven world championships and they are asking where the next challenge is," Wolff said. "And it doesn't go any bigger than the challenge of winning the America's Cup as Challenger of Record.

"You are being the underdog, so you need to do an even better job. So that is of benefit because we retain the ability in-house and they are not going elsewhere -- within the industry or outside. Some of the people throughout the departments have said this is a nice challenge that they would like to take up for the next three or five years and gain some understanding, which probably can be deployed back into Formula One.

"It's almost like an activity that is so competitive that you need all your cognitive and intellectual concentration and that becomes an advantage when you are looking back into Formula One and it takes you out of your comfort zone."

Part of the reason the Mercedes team can afford to lend significant resources to the America's Cup campaign is thanks to Formula One's new budget cap this year. The introduction of a $145 million spending cap in 2021 forced the team to make cuts in its design and engineering departments, but by shifting staff to a non-F1 project outside the cap they can continue to work for the team.

"From a cost cap point of view, this team was bigger last year than you could afford in a cost cap this year and that means a certain amount of our resources is able to work on this type of project," Allison said. "As the rhythm of the Cup campaign requires it, hopefully it will intermesh adequately well with the corresponding demands that happen over in F1 land, so all the skill that we have here can be brought to bear."

Mercedes Applied Science also works on other projects, including the design and optimisation of road bikes, running shoes and Ineos' off-road vehicle the Grenadier. Wolff said the decision to diversify the business away from F1 came from looking at the success of sports franchises in the U.S.A..

"We looked at this pretty early because I'm always keen to learn from other sports leagues and when you look over the ocean at the most developed American sports leagues - the NBA and the NFL - these guys have diversified into real estate and into the hospitality business by the sheer fact that they are having a stadium," Wolff said. "And I think for us the logical next step is diversifying into engineering. We have created all this I.P. that we have never deployed on any other vehicle other than a racing car.

"We have never monetised any of the I.P. that exists here, and you are talking billions of spend into technology in a Formula One team, so that's why it sounds pretty logical that other teams are also looking at that space.

"But Mercedes Applied Science is not a commercial engineering entity. We are not pitching actively for engineering jobs, but we want to work with people who want to break records or win championships in land, sea, air and space. We have seen how the most challenging of all racing, the pinnacle comparable to Formula One, and this is not in the pursuit of margin, but more in the pursuit of learning and diversification for the benefit of Formula One.

"In the same way, a great new project for engineers that have learned their laurels in Formula One but they want to look at something different. Having said that, it needs to stand on its own commercial legs.

"It's our way of diversifying into other business areas, but we need to make sure that we are a contributing partner with the same ambition that we have in Formula One racing but without distracting from any of the two activities: they must run in parallel.

"We don't want to read the headline in three years that since we have started sailing we haven't been winning on the road. That must not happen."

How will Mercedes F1 technology make a yacht go faster?

While Allison will be the technical lead on Ineos Britannia's America's Cup campaign, German naval designer Martin Fischer will lead the design concept. As tempting as it is to imagine shapes from Lewis Hamilton's F1 car emerging on a racing yacht, the reality is that Mercedes' engineering know-how will more likely contribute to parts of the boat you can't see.

"Areas which are harder for America's Cup teams to do but are the meat and drink of an F1 team are all the systems that we have in place to know, for example, that if you want to put a hydraulic pipe down a certain length of something, how far away to keep all the other things so it doesn't fret on the pipe and how often down the pipe do you need to support it so it doesn't bounce around so much and the type of equipment that we have to inspect stuff so that we know that what is designed is what we built and are assembling," Allison said.

"All of the design standards that have been painfully learnt and written into a procedure in an F1 team can now be picked up and used by the community of engineers that is Britannia. That sort of stuff is pretty valuable.

"When you want all your good hydrodynamic and aerodynamic ideas to come true - i.e. the things that are coming from the marine folk of the team, backed up by the capable bodies that are working with them - then the boat has to be assembled on time and to the right qualities, it must not break down on the water so the sailors can learn while they are sailing it, so I think the maturity of the Mercedes Formula One team provides a really functional environment for the design engineers to then create designs that ought to be reliable and work.

"Hopefully we then build enough raw performance in to the boat to make it a competitive boat as well as reliable boat."

Allison added: "We hope we properly understand that being good at racing cars doesn't mean you are good at making yachts. What we wish to do is to learn from people that are good at doing yachts the manner in which we can best help.

"So my opening conversations with Martin were to try and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the previous campaign inside Ben's team, the strengths and weaknesses of the campaign Martin was involved with in with Luna Rossa [the runner up at the 36th America's Cup], to try to figure out how we can amplify the strengths and mitigate the weaknesses.

"And to see where there are areas of opportunity, like the engineering standards that we have is stuff that any engineering group can happily pick up and fall on like manna from heaven to just say that's work we don't need to do, can we just use that?

"To specifically try to get the likely key features, because we don't know a location or the timing yet, but what are the likely key features and what sort of level of force are we going need."

Inside Mercedes’ bid to take its F1 genius onto the water

As our writers continue to pick their highlights of The Race’s 2021 content, F1 writer Edd Straw picks out his feature that highlighted how Mercedes’ efforts to transfer its F1 genius to sailing.

This is perhaps a self-indulgent choice, but the chance to look at a Formula 1 team from a different perspective and understand how its expertise and facilities could be applied to a form of sporting competition that was relatively unfamiliar was fascinating.

The great cliche about the America’s Cup yacht race is that it is “Formula 1 on water”, but the aptness of the metaphor doesn’t mean you can simply smash together a grand prix team and an elite sailing operation and expect victory.

With Mercedes ramping up its involvement in the INEOS Britannia America’s Cup team, the key question is exactly how will it contribute?

Mercedes’ involvement with Team INEOS UK (Britannia is the name of the boat) stretches back to August 2019 through its Applied Science division.

Realistically, that was too late in the cycle for the 2021 America’s Cup to have as big an impact as it might have done, something that will change for the 37th running of the world’s oldest extant international sporting competition.

But the much-discussed upturn in performance early this year after changes made at the end of 2020 did hint at a positive effect.

INEOS Britannia is now based at Brackley, with the design and management offices located there having previously been in Portsmouth.

Mercedes Amg Petronas Motorsport Announces Performance Partnership With Ineos Sailing And Cycling Teams

That means skipper and team principal Ben Ainslie, described by Toto Wolff as “Lewis Hamilton on water”, is there on average three days per week and it’s very much the heart of the operation. According to Wolff, it’s expected that Mercedes will build up to having 50 of its personnel working full-time on the project.

“In the last few months, I’m seeing this real spark for America’s Cup [from Allison]. It’s almost that I have to hold him back a little bit now” :: Toto Wolff

As chief technical officer of Mercedes, both F1 team and applied sciences, James Allison also holds that role in INEOS Britannia and is described as the “technical lead” of the project. But while he is devoting significant time to it, it’s just part of his responsibilities with Mercedes and it is therefore not his sole focus.

From that perspective, the key figure is the newly-recruited head of design concept Martin Fischer, an experienced naval design specialist who oversaw the design of the defeated challenger to the all-conquering New Zealand team in the 2021 America’s Cup, Italy’s Luna Rossa.

But as Wolff explains, Allison’s imagination has been captured by the challenge.

“We spend a lot of time with James now on the more strategic questions,” says Wolff of the new technical role Allison has switched to this year.

“The power unit regulations are being drafted as we speak and Formula 1 is a very political environment at the moment, so he has a lot of involvement in these areas.

“But [technical director] Mike Elliot is running the party operationally and James has been able to move from the dance floor onto the balcony, but his involvement is high.

“But in the last few months, I’m seeing this real spark for America’s Cup. It’s almost that I have to hold him back a little bit now because he really likes that new dimension. And he’s competitive at times as well. So he’s giving it a big effort.”

Ineos Britannia Launch

Another well-known F1 figure, Geoff Willis, is technical director of Applied Sciences and the sailing team having first been involved with America’s Cup way back in 1987 – even before his first dalliance with F1. A glance at the INEOS Britannia ‘core team’ section of its website features both Allison and Willis prominently, underlining how much more significant the integration is with Mercedes.

But as Allison underlines, this is not about an F1 team piling in and trying to reinvent the rudder as “we understand that being good at racing cars doesn’t mean you’re good at making yachts”. Instead, it’s about using its expertise and infrastructure to augment the existing knowledge.

“It’s worth emphasising the engineers in America’s Cup are very fine engineers and they’re working on some pretty impressive stuff,” says Allison when asked by The Race to delve into the detail of where Mercedes is making a contribution.

mercedes f1 yacht

“The fine detail of the hydrodynamics and the aerodynamics, the numerical optimisation that goes on, is very impressive. And we can hold our end up, but we don’t necessarily transform their world.

“But we’ve definitely got capable engineers who can join that party on equal footing and hopefully help swell the numbers.

“But probably areas which are harder for America’s Cup teams to do, but are the meat and drink of an F1 team, are the systems that we have in place to know if you want to put a hydraulic pipe down a certain length of something, how far away you have to keep all the other things so it doesn’t fret on the pipe and how often down the pipe you need to support it so it doesn’t bounce around too much.

“And the type of equipment that we have to inspect stuff so that we know that what we designed is what we built and we’re assembling.

M7959 Crop169014 1024x576 Proportional 16040649574ccc

“All of the design standards that have been painfully learned and written into procedure in a team like the F1 team, which can then be picked up and used by the community of engineers that is INEOS Britannia.

“That sort of stuff is pretty valuable if you want all your good hydrodynamic and aerodynamic ideas to come true, things that are coming from the experienced marine folk on a team backed up by the capable bodies that are working with them.

“The boat has to be assembled on time to the right quality and not break down on the water.”

“When people think about our car roaring round the track or the boat steaming up and down those courses, I doubt whether they give much of a thought to the planners” :: James Allison

The obvious area of collaboration, and one that has been talked about extensively over the past year or so, is in the crucial foils and associated wing details, which bring aerodynamic and hydrodynamic challenges.

But there’s also been a contribution on the hull structure, which Willis has described as “very similar in concept to how we build our chassis”.

As Allison explains, when you dig into the details of a highly technical project like an America’s Cup boat, the crossover with the specialism of F1 team personnel is enormous.

“The challenge of the boat will eventually touch on the skill set of most of the people on the engineering and manufacturing side in this team,” says Allison.

“If you were to go and dig through the boat you’d see there’s things in it that would interest a cooling engineer, a hydraulics engineer, a structural engineer, a composites engineer, a mechanical mechanisms guy, an aerodynamicist, you just name it.

“The full gamut of electronics, data acquisition sensors, for pretty much everything that makes up the backbone of an F1 team you could find some parts of an America’s Cup boat that they could work on and be excited by.

“So the type of people that we hope to bring to the party on this project will cover all the technical areas in our team, but not necessarily all at the same time.

Mercedes Amg Petronas Motorsport Announces Performance Partnership With Ineos Sailing And Cycling Teams

“We’re not making hardware at the moment, the Cup isn’t for a while and so the people that will be making bits will be making prototypes a little bit downstream from here and test rigs and the like and then move on to making boat stuff later on.

“So at the moment, the type of people from the F1 world that are involved are some aerodynamicist type guys, some performance simulation type guys, software type guys, planners.”

That last category, the planners, is a particularly relevant one right now.

With America’s Cup teams often being somewhat ethereal organisations that swell and contract according to the vagaries of the timing of a competition that has, in recent times, been held every three-to-four years, the continuity offered by an organisation like Mercedes is hugely valuable.

Motor Racing Formula One World Championship British Grand Prix Race Day Silverstone, England

The planning functions of F1 teams are highly advanced, experienced in managing complex projects on seemingly impossible timescales and this will be hugely beneficial for the America’s Cup team in terms of maximising the design and development time and ensuring parts are manufactured on time and to a high standard.

“When people think about our car roaring round the track or the boat steaming up and down those courses, I doubt whether they give much of a thought to the planners,” says Allison.

“But actually, at the beginning of a campaign, they’re your most precious assets.

mercedes f1 yacht

“This is very similar to F1, it’s a race against the clock. It’s just going be some years before we actually fight, and it might feel like that’s ages, but when you look at all the work that’s piled up in front of us, it feels like it’s tomorrow.

“Having the planners who can show you what the critical path is so that you can then deploy material and folks in that direction, that’s really key.

“At the moment we’ve got some F1 planners working on that least glamorous, but really, really important, of tasks.”

The timing of this expanded alliance is perfect. Mercedes is an organisation that has been forced to adapt to the constraints of F1’s recently-introduced cost cap and needs to direct resources to activities outside of its core. So it has the people and the facilities through its applied sciences division to throw at a project like this.

America’s Cup technology is almost at the point where an alliance with an organisation like an F1 team is necessary

It also has the ambition to associate its applied science division with such grand challenges in a way an F1 team has never been able to before.

While Red Bull Technologies previously had an association with the Team INESO UK project thanks to Adrian Newey’s longstanding interest in America’s Cup, according to Ainslie the timing and the way Red Bull operated at that time meant that “it didn’t really fit the Red Bull structure”. With the changes in F1, it’s clear the fit with Mercedes as it is now is much more appropriate.

“Mercedes Applied Science is not a commercial engineering entity and we are not pitching actively for engineering jobs,” says Wolff.

M7958 Crop169014 1024x576 Proportional 16040649594b84

“But we want to work with people that want to break records, to win championships on land, sea, air, and space. And we have seen [in America’s Cup] the most challenging of all racing, the pinnacle – comparable to Formula 1.

“This is not in the pursuit of margin, but it is more in the pursuit of learning, of diversification for the benefit of Formula 1.

“And it’s a great new project for engineers that have earned their laurels in Formula 1, but want to look at something different. Having said that, it needs to stand on its own commercial legs.”

The commercial set-up is complicated given INEOS owns 33% of the Mercedes F1 team, which means it was obvious Jim Ratcliffe’s company would search for mutual benefits. That said, Wolff says it was Ainslie who was pushing hardest to find areas in which the F1 team could benefit the America’s Cup project.

M283064

This is where the other aspect of the timing is perfect, given America’s Cup technology has developed at such a rate that the speeds now achieved in competition were once the preserve of speed record yachts.

It’s almost at the point where an alliance with an organisation like an F1 team is necessary, meaning it is no surprise that there are rumours of Red Bull getting involved with another team in the future.

“It’s getting that way,” says Ainslie when asked by The Race if such partnership are becoming a prerequisite for America’s Cup success.

mercedes f1 yacht

“Team New Zealand obviously have been really successful in the last couple of cycles, but they are a team that’s been in the Cup now for 30 years. The people may have changed slightly over the years, but it’s essentially the same organisation.

“And they actually have a lot of F1 design input – their lead designer has as a Formula 1 background with McLaren – Dan Bernasconi.

“So he influenced that approach and discipline you can see that through the Team New Zealand organisation as well.”

It remains to be seen how this plays out, not least because details such as the protocols the 37th America’s Cup will be fought according to and the venue have yet to be decided.

M8809 Crop169014 1024x576 Proportional 160844902582dd

But this is arguably the toughest sporting competition in the world to win and, as Ainslie says, Team New Zealand is the benchmark in America’s Cup having prevailed in 2021.

The timing appears right for both the land and water-based sides of this alliance. The integration of the organisations seems logical and the attitude, approach and expertise that has served Mercedes so well in F1 in recent years can surely only be of benefit to INESO Britannia.

Mercedes F1 team has partnered with sailor Ben Ainslie ahead of America’s Cup yacht competition. A Britain side hasn’t won the competition since 1851. Together, Mercedes and Ainslie will try their best as Mercedes pushes its team further and further.

The link between Mercedes and yachting has been a company named Ineos. Last year, Ineos bought a 33 percent stake in Mercedes’ F1 team. Since then, a cost budget cap has been introduced in F1, forcing Mercedes to move some of their personnel to different projects.

“We have had situations where engineers said, we have done this for seven years with seven world championships and they are asking where the next challenge is. And it doesn’t go any bigger than the challenge of winning the America’s Cup as Challenger of Record.” “You are being the underdog, so you need to do an even better job. Some of the people throughout the departments have said this is a nice challenge that they would like to take up for the next three or five years and gain some understanding, which probably can be deployed back into Formula One.” Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 boss

Mercedes assigns its best technical director on the project

Initially, up to 50 workers from Mercedes will develop an early design process of the yacht. James Allison, Mercedes’ chief technical officer, will be the technical lead on the yacht project. During his time in Formula 1, Allison has been one of the most brilliant technical minds.

“We hope we properly understand that being good at racing cars doesn’t mean you are good at making yachts. What we wish to do is to learn from people that are good at doing yachts the manner in which we can best help.” James Allison

Before taking on the yacht competitions, the Mercedes F1 team is fiercely battling for the 2021 F1 championships. After winning at the Russian GP, Lewis Hamilton regained the championship lead by two points. There are currently seven races left in the season, with Turkish GP being just days away.

MONACO. In the lead up to the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix, which was held on 29 May, the Mercedes AMG Pertronas Formula 1 Team, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, took to Monaco’s waters to showcase the speed and style of Mercedes’ Cigarette Racing speedboat and a Mercedes-Benz Style motoryacht respectively.

The Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder AMG Monaco Concept, inspired by the current Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car, epitomises speed and performance. Whereas, the Mercedes-Benz style Arrow460-Granturismo is designed to echo the class and elegance of Mercedes’ road vehicles.

“The Cigarette Racing speedboat and our Mercedes-Benz style luxury yacht, Arrow460-Granturismo, represent a coming together of two design icons. Each of them is hot & cool as their design is both attractive and surprisingly new, making both boats perfect embodiments of emotion and intelligence,” comments Gorden Wagener, head of design at Daimler.

Mercedes’ high-performance Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder AMG Monaco concept boasts two Mercury Racing V8 engines, the most powerful series-production twin engines available in the Cigarette portfolio. Each engine produces 1550hp and enables the vessel to reach a top speed of more than 123knots – as a chase boat there would be no fear of keeping pace. Mercedes-Benz designers were responsible for the exterior design.

“The Arrows460-Granturismo carries our Mercedes genes throughout. We have transferred an automotive design idiom to a yacht – and this design statement far outside the usual mainstream in the boat industry allows us to create a totally original aesthetic,” continues Wagener.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz Style and developed with Silver Arrow Marine, the luxury Arrow460-Granturismo is a 14m vessel that borrows its proportions from the automotive world and combines the advantages of an open boat with those of a hull cabin cruiser.

America’s Cup: Ainslie goes all-in with Mercedes F1

Ben Ainslie's America's Cup team has gone all-in with Mercedes F1 with James Allison appointed Chief Technical Officer of INEOS Britannia and operations currently in the Mercedes base in Brackley

mercedes f1 yacht

Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup Challenge – now INEOS Britannia , formerly INEOS Team UK – launched the first stage of its tilt at the 37th America’s Cup today. INEOS Britannia revealed a number of key new personnel as well as just how closely the Cup team will be working alongside the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team at their base in Brackley.

The leadership team was unveiled in a video presentation hosted by Georgie Ainslie, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe , Sir Ben Ainslie , David Endean, Toto Wolff and James Allison all present. It was broadcast from the Mercedes F1 base in Brackley. The location and presence of Wolff and Allison all provided an early clear direction of the team’s setup ahead of the next America’s Cup.

It’s clear that within the six months that have elapsed since the end of the 36th America’s Cup – which culminated in a successful defence for Emirates Team New Zealand and the British team bowing out in the Prada Cup Final – the team has been busy restructuring and making some tough decisions.

“We stopped pretty firmly in Auckland and then had to regroup. You need to be careful not to make rash decisions and now we need to make sure we have the right people involved,” explained newly promoted Chief Operating Officer, David Endean, who was with the team in Auckland as Project Director.

mercedes f1 yacht

One such right person for the job is the newly hired Martin Fischer, who joins the team as Head of Design Concept. Fisher headed up the design team for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the last Cup cycle, so comes with a great deal of experience in the AC75 and America’s Cup more broadly.

This will be a big scalp for the team, with such an experienced designer who was responsible for producing the boat which ultimately knocked the Brits out of the Cup last time round.

They have picked up another new design hire in Nat Shaver, a foil design expert who was with American Magic for the last America’s Cup too.

Clearly the design decisions taken in the lead up to the last America’s Cup were identified as a weakness ( read our piece in the development process which saw the Brits ultimately get knocked out of the America’s Cup in early 2021 ) and it is this area where there has been significant work on recruitment. It has also clearly been the impetus for a much closer working relationship with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, which developed during the last Cup cycle, partly when F1 racing was paused during lockdown.

“I don’t think the Brits have ever arrived at an America’s Cup with a boat that probably could have won, even though we have had some fantastic sailors,” commented Sir Jim Radcliffe .

Radcliffe is the man responsible for the Mercedes and INOES Britannia collaboration, being both the owner of the INOES Britannia team and a significant backer and stakeholder in the Mercedes F1 team.

“And our boat that we had for AC36 wasn’t capable of winning, technically it was not good enough,” he added.

America’s Cup and F1, happy bedfellows?

Since the America’s Cup moved to super-high speed foiling boats back in 2013 there has been a great deal of talk about the ways in which Formula 1 technologies can be used to improve the performance of America’s Cup yachts, be they the AC72 foiling catamarans, the AC50 foiling catamarans or the latest AC75 foiling monohulls .

Toto Wolff and Sir Jim Ratcliffe

But for all the similarities between the two sports – both are essentially design, engineering and technology challenges in which the best sportspeople compete for victory – rarely has the inclusion of F1 designers, engineers or technology made any clear difference to a team winning the America’s Cup.

One could argue that for all the similarities, the differences are too great to make a significant impact one way or the other. Or perhaps, as appears to be the opinion of INEOS Britannia, integration needs to be done hand in glove at the outset.

“When people talk about the America’s Cup being like Formula 1 on water, most people immediately think, it’s hydrodynamic, it’s aerodynamic, it’s technical. But the most striking thing to me is that it is difficult,” explained James Allison, Chief Technical Officer of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team and now also Chief Technical Officer of INEOS Britannia.

“The way in which it has worked okay for us in F1 is to have the humility to admit that it is difficult and if you don’t your competition will eat you up. And this challenge; it is proper difficult.

“It’s really exciting that there is a team of experienced [Cup] engineers that are absolutely at the heart of what we are doing… and Mercedes will bring our own engineers, all of them capable, skilful engineers. Hopefully working with people who have done this Cup before, and understand it, we can work together to create something special, good enough for this one difficult challenge.”

This broadly summarises the direction of travel for INOES Britannia. There is a new design team of top class naval architects and foil designers who will be working alongside the significant engineering, design, and technical know-how of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Mercedes were involved in the last America’s Cup challenge with Ainslie’s team, but both Wolff and Allison pointed out on several occasions that they were not there at the start of the cycle and came in relatively late.

“Last time round there were, as Toto [Wolff] mentioned, people in the factory who got engaged as we had some of our own down in Portsmouth working on the boat and then eventually when it was racing there were people actually out there in Auckland.

“We were brought in to be capable bodies to put their shoulder to the wheel, but we did not have any real part in the strategy or the thinking behind it, we were just brought in to help. This time round we are all one big team trying to make sure we put something competitive together.

“It does feel different as we have a lot of skin in it and we want to make sure we are pulling our weight and to make sure we have something competitive when it comes to race time.”

A key member of the team in terms of syncing up both the naval architects and the Mercedes design team may be newly appointed Technical Director of INEOS Britannia, Geoffrey Willis. Willis is a Mercedes man and also Technical Director of Mercedes-AMG F1 Applied Science.

Willis started his design career in the sailing field, having been a member of the design team for Peter de Savary’s Blue Arrow America’s Cup Challenge – which ultimately did not compete in the 1988 America’s Cup, which became a deed of gift challenge between Michael Fay’s giant KZ-1 and Dennis Connor’s rigid winged catamaran, Stars and Stripes .

He then moved into Formula 1 and has built an impressive career working, and winning constructor championships, with a number of F1 outfits before moving to Mercedes in 2011.

Willis will surely be a key member of personnel in essentially helping to stitch together two design teams from the two worlds of foiling and elite motorsport.

A push for the Protocol

Though much of the presentation was given over to how INOES Britannia will be working alongside Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 there was another notable theme: the push to get the protocol published and get moving with the build up to the 37th America’s Cup .

There was a sense of impatience from the Challenger of Record to get to the protocol agreed. The protocol must be agreed by the Defender (Emirates Team New Zealand) and Challenger of Record (INEOS Britannia) and usually sets out the venue, the class of boat and most of the rest of the conditions under which the America’s Cup will be sailed.

Currently the protocol is due to be released on the 17 November, but there has been a great deal of debate surrounding the likely venue of the event . Emirates Team New Zealand have been looking into options other than holding it in Auckland, the scene of their successful defence.

Without knowing the venue and its likely wind conditions, all Challengers are limited to purely theoretical design development – something Martin Fischer made clear in a follow up video chat. As time is the deciding factor in many successful America’s Cup bids, the Challenger of Record, along with any other potential teams, is keen to get things moving as soon as possible.

Why the Mercedes F1 team is getting involved in yacht racing

mercedes f1 yacht

"To specifically try to get the likely key features, because we don't know a location or the timing yet, but what are the likely key features and what sort of level of force are we going need."

a race car on a track

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to party on a Yacht in Monaco with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Racing Team, and attend the race like a VIP, while staying at a five star hotel, you’ve now got your shot.

Marriott has released the latest of its Marriott Bonvoy Moments series, and from suite tickets to US sporting events, Premier League football access to concerts in Dubai, and yes — Formula One in Spain and Monaco — there’s a lot to love.

Latest Marriott Bonvoy Moments

With “in person” events back in full swing, Marriott Bonvoy Moments are back too. I’d say, with a vengeance.

In case you’re unfamiliar, these moments offer Bonvoy members a chance to spend points on borderline priceless experiences, thanks to Marriott’s reach into the world of sports, entertainment, dining and more. Some offers are “buy it now” with a set points price and others are up for auction.

The latest batch offers plenty of NHL, IPL and entertainment options, but notably Formula One is back. As a premier sponsor of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, Marriott is occasionally able to wrangle some priceless access, and if you’re sitting on a heavy Bonvoy Points balance this might be the time to unload.

two men in racing uniforms

Marriott is offering a variety of “Moments” packages from race tickets with a gift bag to full on access with the team, the crew, and even their apartment and yacht. Crazy stuff. Here’s how Marriott Bonvoy describes the top ‘Moments’ package up for grabs.

Gear up for a once-in-a-lifetime weekend in Monaco. You’ll spend Qualifying Day in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Apartment, with views from the balcony overlooking the circuit, complete with five-star food and beverages, a chance to see the Team up close and more. Later that evening, you’ll head to the private Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Yacht to enjoy canapés, cocktails and a three-course dinner. The Yacht will be yours for the night, complete with a master suite where you and your guest can enjoy a relaxing night’s sleep. In the morning, you’ll have breakfast on the Yacht and enjoy Race Day festivities from this exclusive location. Top it off with a pre- and post-stay in glitzy Cannes. It doesn’t get more luxurious than this. Marriott Bonvoy

It sounds fairly incredible, and the details don’t disappoint either. Aside from the over the top experience listed here , there are plenty of in between options too .

Basically, if you want the experience below, you’ll need to be a Marriott Bonvoy Points millionaire, but if you just want to catch the race, or have a little access to the team, there are options for mere fractions. Still, it’s fun to dream.

a race car on a track

The Experience Includes

  • VIP admission to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Apartment for Qualifying Day on Saturday, 28 May 2022
  • Canapés, cocktails and dinner on the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Yacht on Saturday evening and breakfast on Sunday morning
  • Please note, there is only one bed in the bedroom on the Yacht
  • Opportunity to see Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team personnel
  • Indulgent food and beverages
  • VIP gifts from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
  • Checking in on Thursday, 26 May 2022 and checking out on Monday, 30 May 2022
  • Round-trip transportation between the hotel and circuit
  • Must be 12 years or older to attend

Moments Could Hit New Levels In 2022

This is another example where by bundling this package, Marriott is creating some wild value, even when the points prices are high. A four night stay during a peak race day is hardly ever going to be available at all with points in normal times, so the value of that alone is major. Hundreds of thousands of points, for sure.

Add in the food, transportation and the priceless elements and things start to feel pretty priceless, in fact. As 2022 shapes up to be a big year for travel, sports, cuisine and all things entertainment, it’ll be exciting to see what else Marriott can pull out of the bag.

I like watching cars go round in circles and will gladly give up all my Marriott points to do so.

meh sucks when bloggers blog about these… typically people pile in and ruin-it and unlike reward flights/hotels (which are release daily) these dont get released that often… hey ho… these auctions used to go for tens of thousands, last year i picked up the final race of the season (hotel/team/paddock) for hundreds of thousands.. and now they are millions..

Genuinely sorry to bust bubbles for readers here. Just excited about the proposition. Fingers crossed one slips under the radar for you.

George Russell is a wanker

Constructive 😂

Oh mr Ott… Sir, Mr points, miles, travel and airline blogger guru genius… (that’s the buttering up done)…

I don’t suppose you have a couple or 3 million spare (donateable) Bonvoy points lying around do you? That would be grand if you could send them my way.

Thanks, see I knew you’d come through, you’re the best 😁

Haha I’d do almost anything for my (good) readers. Almost.

LOL, I very much live by the “if you don’t ask, you don’t get” motto so it was always worth a go 😂

Flying Qsuites to Singapore GP (which I highly recommend, F1 fan or not) so I shouldn’t be too greedy!

Makes my 50,000 Bonvoy points redemption for all day yacht access during race weekend at Yas Marina a few years back look like a bargain!

Wow, that sounds like an amazing deal!

How can members purchase this experience?

My husband would love it if I surprised him with tickets to an F1 race! Bonvoy makes that easy!

The newest model is estimated to cost £6.1 million by Motorboat & Yachting but, if you are interested, you should expect the cost to soar closer to £9m once you’ve added those crucial upgrades!

Hamilton’s Sunseeker is 91.9 feet - not actually the largest of its type.

It features a luxury interior and several bedrooms. It has “American walnut carpentry”, air conditioning, a swimming swhoer, a professional chef’s sized kitchen and a huge entertainment system, according to Elysian Estates.

There is a dining area for eight people and a barbecue area.

Hamilton’s yacht is usually kept in Monaco.

W hat happens when The Ritz-Carlton and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team  collide? A race-day retreat with five-star service, of course. From an on-site concierge to a traveling trophy case, it’s easy to see why the freshly renovated Silver Arrows Lounge is the place the entire paddock wants to be on race day. We invite you to go inside and discover how this exclusive space got its start and crossed the finish line—all in a whirlwind six months.

Ritz Carlton Hotel image

Sam O’Brien, head of design for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, and Theresa Fatino, a top interior designer routinely tapped by The Ritz-Carlton, worked together to design the Silver Arrows Lounge. They created a space with modern luxury and elegance, along with a ‘softer edge’ to balance high-tech and human touch.

The Dream Team

Sam O’Brien, head of design for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, and Theresa Fatino, a top interior designer routinely tapped by The Ritz-Carlton, joined forces to take the Silver Arrows Lounge to the next level. “We wanted to combine the modern luxury of Mercedes-Benz with the elegance of The Ritz-Carlton,” says O’Brien of the vision for the team’s Paddock Club suite. Fatino’s primary goals were to bring a “softer edge to the design” and create a space that evoked the same warmth as an inviting hotel lobby. Together, the two design dynamos and their teams struck the perfect balance between high-tech and human touch.

The Inspiration

The Ritz-Carlton’s spectacular properties around the world were among the many references pinned to Fatino’s mood board. She also looked at sculptures by Janet Echelman and Anish Kapoor, as well as two iconic race cars that earned Mercedes-Benz the “Silver Arrows” moniker: the W25 and the W125. “With their stunning silhouettes and sensual lines, both cars were a great source of inspiration,” says Fatino of the sleek aluminum automobiles that were created for the 1934 and 1937 Grand Prix seasons. In addition to past accomplishments, the team’s recent accolades also played a role in the design. During a meeting at the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team headquarters, a gleaming trophy wall caught Fatino’s eye. “I knew I had to incorporate [this element] into the lounge,” she says.

Hardware of a different kind served as a jumping off point for O’Brien during the design process. “We looked at brass accents, marble finishes, and the light blue tones that are signatures of The Ritz-Carlton and fused them with the palette of Mercedes-AMG, which includes concrete, leather, and black paneling,” he explains. “Both brands have very different approaches to luxury, but at the end of the day, it’s still luxury.”

Ritz Carlton Hotel image

Crossing the finish line first isn’t the only logistical challenge posed during race weekend. Creating a world-class lounge that can be easily packed up and moved around the globe presents its own unique set of obstacles. “Everything must be able to be broken down and fit into a shipping container,” explains Fatino. “There are also weight restrictions, so we had to take all of that into consideration.”

Despite the many limitations associated with designing a “pop-up hospitality space,” O’Brien says the result doesn’t resemble your typical temporary structure. “When you’re inside the lounge, it feels like you are in a permanent place,” he explains. The team achieved this by creating separate zones—such as a dining enclave, a cozy bar, and a semi-private concierge desk—to encourage conversation and relaxation. They also introduced floor lamps and other fixtures that could help control the lighting and set the mood in each area; upholstered walls and plush seating to absorb the sound of speeding cars; custom wood tables inlaid with brass outlines of each Grand Prix track; and fresh botanicals for a burst of life.

The Highlights

The unobstructed views of the track, fully stocked bar, haute cuisine, ample seating, and best-in-class service are only part of the draw. For O’Brien, one of the many standout moments in the Silver Arrows Lounge is the on-site concierge desk staffed by the ladies and gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton. “You can go over during the day and ask questions about the local area and book a table [for a post-race dinner] just as you would in a five-star hotel,” he says.

Fatino is especially proud of the private dining area flanked by a glass case stocked with sparkling awards—a feature that can be seen by anyone who happens to be passing through the Paddock Club. “Why not show off a bit?!” she says. With the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team fighting hard to secure their eighth consecutive Constructors’ Championship, they may need to consider extending the length of that trophy wall in the very near future.

The Five-Star Reviews

The Team’s VIP guests aren’t the only ones buzzing about the new Silver Arrows Lounge. The members of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team were eager to be among the first to experience the space and Fatino was thrilled to give them a tour. “It was such an honor to receive compliments from all of these master craftsmen and genius engineers,” she says. As is true of most things in F1, word of the redesign traveled fast. “Once we delivered something new at this level, we found that there was a lot of interest from our team, as well as up and down the paddock,” adds O’Brien. “Other teams stopped by to have a look.” There’s no denying that a new hospitality standard has been set—and the race is now on for the competition to keep pace.

Mercedes uncovers biggest clue on 2024 f1 struggles, mercedes technical director james allison says formula 1 2024's first three races have unveiled initial trends on why it has struggled so much..

Filip Cleeren

While the Mercedes W15 has been easier to handle for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, it hasn't delivered the expected performance step.

Mercedes has yet to score higher than fifth, and after a double retirement in Australia, it has fallen 29 points behind third-placed McLaren.

Even putting aside the two DNFs, the Brackley squad has struggled for performance and across the season start's vastly different circuits of Bahrain, Jeddah and Melbourne some worrying trends have come to light.

In the heat of Saudi Arabia, it already became apparent that the W15 struggles for grip in high-speed corners, aggravated by bouncing and, according to technical director Allison, a trend has now emerged the team is less competitive in warmer conditions.

The latest data point was the gap in competitiveness between Australia's free practice three and qualifying.

In FP3, which was held in the cooler morning, Hamilton and Russell were almost on the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari.

Yet in afternoon qualifying, when Ferrari and Red Bull both found chucks of lap time, Mercedes appeared to plateau, with Russell and Hamilton qualifying seventh and 11th respectively.

"We are starting to see a pattern emerge that most weekends we have a period in the weekend where we are feeling confident about the car, but then in the paying sessions, in qualifying and the race, that slips through our fingers," Allison explained.

"If we were trying to draw that pattern together then probably the strongest correlation that we can make at the moment, is that our competitiveness drops when the track is warm, when the day is at its warmest and therefore the tyre temperatures rise with those of the track.

"That gives us some clues about what we need to do as we move forward from here. From FP3 to qualifying in Melbourne there was not a set-up change."

Allison said it is not yet clear if the W15's shortcomings can be remedied with set-up work or if more drastic changes are required.

"If you've identified correctly an accurate assessment of why our competitiveness waxes and wanes, then you can work into the weekend a programme that is dedicated towards trying to move the temperature and the temperature balance front to rear in your favour and using all the conventional set-up tools on the car," he added.

"That work you can do back here in the factory and the simulation and so on.

"But if you conclude having exhausted the degrees of freedom that you have available to you in set-up terms that you still need to go further, well then that gets harder at that point.

"That will be that there are underlying characteristics in say the aerodynamic map that you've engineered or the suspension characteristic that is aggravating that particular feature.

"In order to make it really heal up nicely, then you would have to change those underlying features. It can be either quick and dirty, or a little more involved and a bit more complicated."

118 Wallypower superyacht running

Iconic yachts: 118 WallyPower

The 118 WallyPower remains as striking today as when it was first launched in August 2003. The futuristic lines are reminiscent of a Stealth bomber, and it’s easy to imagine Darth Vader at the controls, skimming over the waves. This boat still generates discussion, still turns heads, still mesmerises.

Luca Bassani , founder of Wally, is so in love with the 118 WallyPower that once a year he goes out on the tender, switches off the engine and instructs the crew to surge past him at top speed. ‘The motion is not actually the speed; the motion is first of all the shape of the boat and the fact that you don’t hear anything. It’s just this great, beautiful sheet passing by at high speed with the only sound a light whistle.’ He makes a hissing sound between his teeth and laughs. ‘Another thing I like is that from the outside, when the boat is anchored in a bay, you really don’t see it… the sage colour blends and changes with the colour of the coast, the rocks and the green of the water.’

Bassani took the plunge from sailboat to motor yacht design when he noticed a 15 to 20 per cent increase in the open power boat market over ten years. The 118 WallyPower took four years to develop. He had a client in mind but no contract, but this was enough to give him the impetus to move forward without the constraints of working within a client’s needs. The objective was to create a very fast boat perfect for short Mediterranean day cruises and able to maintain high speeds even in rough seas. The solution was a deep V hull which, with the shape of the bow and the use of interceptors, allows the boat to pierce the waves comfortably, even at high speeds. ‘Extensive research and tank testing resulted in a hull design different and better than any other,’ he claims. ‘Like our sailboats, the design is an evolution of all our experience. For us the ride of the hull is the key to our sales.’

The new hull design will be used for all the range, starting with the tender. ‘It is really fantastic. If weather conditions allow, you would rather cruise at 60 knots, but in reasonable conditions, at 40 knots you can do all the missions you have to do.’

After the hull, Bassani is most satisfied with the forward ‘liveable’ cockpit of the 118 WallyPower. ‘When I say liveable I’m talking about quality of life aboard. This foredeck feels as if you are on a sailboat, not a power boat, which I like a lot.’ He is also pleased with the water jet propulsion: ‘The noise is very low – no vibration, fantastic manoeuvrability, no problem with draught. We see only advantages.’ And he believes carbon fibre is essential for cutting through the waves: ‘You need a very rigid, light hull. You don’t use carbon fibre for the bottom of the hull because it would become too brittle, but the structure inside has to be carbon.’

The 118 WallyPower’s gas turbines deliver 17,000hp, and diesel is used for manoeuvring and cruising at night at up to 10 knots. ‘With the two diesels you have a great range – 1,800 miles – while if you went with the gas turbines at 40 to 60 knots the range is 400 to 500 miles, no more.’ This brings up the subject of sustainable power: ‘We are studying a new concept that will substantially improve the sustainability of powerboats,’ says Bassani.

118 WallyPower, a stealthy superyacht for billionaire owners..

118 wallypower yacht

The 118 WallyPower is a 36 m superyacht built by the famous Wally shipyard in the 2000s. With its futuristic military inspired look and its 3 large gas turbines, she was a UFO when she was launched.

Chloé Torterat

A futuristic construction

The 118 WallyPower is the largest motor yacht produced by the famous Monegasque shipyard Wally Yachts . It was built in the early 2000's according to the drawings of Luca Bassani for a client who wanted a motor yacht inspired by the 27 m sloop built by the shipyard and with the Argentinean naval architect Frers, called Tiketitan.

118 wallypower yacht

Luca Bassani Antivari, founder of Wally and an accomplished former sailor is passionate about sailing. But through this project of a 36 m superyacht, he will launch the Wallytender, then the 118 WallyPower.

Its angular lines associated with the glass superstructure are reminiscent of a stealth ship. The result is a sense of power and speed . In fact, Wally's founder describes it as ".. a stealth bomber with a sailboat bow, Formula One-style air intakes and a stripped-down Asian-inspired interior design."

118 wallypower yacht

An exceptional motorization

The engines - i.e. 3 gas turbines of 5?600 CH each - develop a total of 16?800 CH (12?500 kW). They power a Rolls-Royce Kamewa jet-type transmission consisting of 2 steerable side jets and a fixed central jet. Two 370 HP (280 kW) Cummins diesel engines can take over from the turbines. In the first configuration, the 118 WallyPower will reach more than 60 knots (110 km/h), but only 9 knots in the second version, which will be preferred for long distance manoeuvres.

118 wallypower yacht

State-of-the-art construction

The hull of the 118 WallyPower is the result of an extensive research and development program that included tests in the hull tank in Gothenburg, Sweden and in the wind tunnel at Ferrari in Maranello, Italy . Stability at high speed is guaranteed by a deep V-shaped hull (22° degrees) and a wave piercing straight bow. The air intakes of the gas turbines have been optimized to minimize vibration and exhaust backflow on deck and into the hull. The hull conceals a tender garage.

118 wallypower yacht

The bottom of the hull is constructed of monolithic fibreglass. The dead works with a hybrid of balsa sandwich and fiberglass/carbon. The deck is made of Nomex (Kevlar honeycomb)/carbon. The superstructure of the deck is made of a carbon frame on which glass panels are glued. Inside, part of the interior layout is made of carbon to reduce weight. The dark green metallic paint changes with the reflections of the changing lights and landscape. On the deck, in the cockpit, the bulwarks tilt to enjoy an incredible view of the sea from the saloon but also to take advantage of the large outside space.

118 wallypower yacht

A luxurious and uncluttered layout

Inside, on the main deck, the open space offers 3 distinct areas, from bow to stern: the helm station, the raised dining/meeting area and the large saloon below, which opens onto the outside without a break in continuity, introducing the concept of the inside-outside living area. A 360° view is available from the dining area thanks to the raised floor. Under the dining table - which seats 8 people - long rectangular glazing brings light to the lower floor. This keeps the dining area at the front away from the heat of the engines. The boat also has 6 plasma screen televisions.

118 wallypower yacht

Below deck, the owner's cabin is located forward and has a deck porthole for light. There is a large double bed, a private bathroom and a large dressing room. Two guest cabins have a queen-size bed, a dressing room and a bathroom.

The kitchen (with the pantry) includes an oven, stove, television and several refrigerators.

118 wallypower yacht

A millionaire's boat

The price of the 118 Wallypower is $33 million for the triple gas turbine version, or $22 million for the dual diesel engines. Its range is 1800 miles at 9 knots or 300 miles at 60 knots. Finally, its fuel tank has a capacity of 22 tons.

At the maximum speed of 60 knots, the gas turbine uses 58 litres of fuel per mile, or 3?500 litres per hour. For example, to travel from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back at 50 knots, it takes 90 minutes for 6?000 to get from Cannes to Saint-Tropez and back, using dépensé?! The WallyPower 118 weighs 95 tons and can accommodate 6 crew members and 6 guests on board.

118 wallypower yacht

Prestigious awards

The 118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design Award, organised by Seatec (the Carrarafiere sailing and navigation technology trade fair) for "Design for the third millennium". It was the only boat in the architecture and design exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 2004/2005), for the exhibition "Glamour : Fabricating Affluence".

World’s coolest boats: Wallypower 118 looks like Darth Vader’s superyacht

  • Superyachts
  • Top stories

Each month we pick out an iconic boat that can lay claim to the title of world’s coolest boat. This month, we take a closer look at the 118 Wallypower.

Michael Bay’s 2005 sci-fi thriller movie The Island was about a group of people isolated in a compound, they’re told, due to nuclear fallout.

As the film progresses, we learn that these people are in fact clones of wealthy individuals, created for organ-harvesting should it ever be needed.

Because they are clones, they experience dreams based on lives they have not lived. One of them is a clone of a famous yacht designer, and so his dreams are of superyachts .

The studio needed the most dramatic, the most outstanding, the most iconic superyacht on the water to illustrate this, and so, of course, they chose the Wallypower 118.

Wally why200 yacht tour: inside the most extraordinary superyacht of the year, iguana 29 yacht tour and test drive: is the world’s coolest amphibious boat.

The brainchild of Luca Bassani, heir to a Milanese lighting fortune and owner of Monaco-based Wally Yachts , it was the first foray into large motor yachts for his yard, noted up until then for building edgy sailboat designs and being named after the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character, Wally Gator (a favourite of his young son).

The most outstanding feature of this sensational beast is the styling. At 118ft long and completely unique, it appears to have been constructed using origami. The hull is carbon fibre and GRP composite, and the superstructure is triple-laminated tinted glass on a carbon frame.

And if that’s not wacky enough, everything on the exterior of the yacht, from the cleats to the tables to the seating, is concealed – rising out of the deck when required. If Darth Vader had a superyacht, it would look like this.

Movie-star styling and minimal-luxe interiors combine to create the ultimate superyacht

Such an outstanding design deserves supreme performance, so the pair of 370hp diesel engines, producing a top speed of 9 knots, appears initially underwhelming. But fear not, these are merely an amuse-bouche, fitted only to manoeuvre the boat out of the harbour.

Once at sea the captain is free to light up the three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, unleashing over 16,800hp through three water jets (two steerable, one fixed) and propelling this incredible machine past 60 knots, according to the manufacturer.

Although conceived as a production yacht, reportedly only one was ever built. The price at the time? An impressive £17 million.

Wallypower 118

  • By Dennis Caprio
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

If Wallygator , the first of Luca Bassani’s brainchildren, was a breath of fresh air when it appeared on the sailing scene in the waning years of the last century, the Wallypower 118 motoryacht is a full gale. On the outside, she combines elements of Marcello Gandini’s masterpiece Lamborghini Countach of the middle 1980s and the U.S. Air Force Stealth Fighter. On the inside, she reinforces Bassani’s predilection for simple, open spaces defined by areas of use, instead of bulkheads. Bassani, il padrone of Wally Yachts, didn’t design the 118, but his signature is all over it.

Like the Countach and the Stealth Fighter, this 118-foot speedster is a riot of hard edges, straight lines and serious functionality. Her extraordinary elegance and simplicity suggest a child of 10 could have produced her topsides and house, but these elements are the work of modern artists set free from the shackles of traditional thinking about how boats should look.

As far as I can tell from the drawings, only one of the design elements above the waterline exists purely for its own sake. Everything else serves a purpose. The sheerline in profile is reversed, higher amidships than at either end. This is typical of high-performance boats and had its origin in an attempt to make the topsides aerodynamic. The Wally’s recessed deck kills that theory, so we have to regard the reverse sheer as a styling exercise that places the 118 in the high-performance category.

We could easily dismiss the prominent side pods as a gimmick, mostly because we’re so used to seeing fake scoops and vents on modern automobiles and boats. These, however, are real. They draw, via the forward opening, mega-volumes of fresh air to the gas turbine engines, and they house the exhaust system. The top section of each pod (above deck height) hinges outboard to become a teak-paved boarding platform served by a ladder/gangplank that appears to slide out of the pod.

As a styling device, the side pods, combined with the rise of the chine from amidships forward, carve the massive topsides area into manageable sections, letting us process her statement at our leisure instead of forcing us to absorb the whole in one glance. The design team’s confidence in the 118’s dramatic statement is illustrated by the choice of color. The designers rendered her in titanium gray on the topsides and charcoal gray for the house, proudly showing exactly how this sculpture defines itself in shadows and highlights. She may be the only large powerboat in the hyper-performance class that doesn’t need “oh boy” murals on her topsides.

Flat planes at various angles to one another form a deckhouse that reminds me of the Stealth Fighter. Claudio Lazzarini, of the Lazzarini & Pickering design firm, calls it a crystal prism. The entire structure is made of flat transparent panels-flat to permit the use of power-operated doors and windows, and to prevent the distorted view that often comes with transparent curvatures. This crystal prism, the designers said, creates in the saloon the relaxed atmosphere of a cockpit. Tinting the structure filters ultraviolet rays, keeps the interior from being too bright and too hot, and contributes to the yacht’s purposeful look. Decks of natural-finish teak color-a touch of the early 20th century on an otherwise futuristic concept-ease the extreme tension generated by her sharp edges and no-nonsense demeanor.

Teak planes, vertical and horizontal, inside the crystal prism divide the area into a landscape of functions, or islands in a sea of teak. Right abaft the helm, a sliding teak table seats 14 adults in a formal or a casual setting. Among the many islands, one contains a single seat for reading or working at a computer housed in a nearby cabinet. Beneath this chair is a small, drawer-style refrigerator most people would stock with mineral water, soft drinks and beer. Another island lets you stretch out to watch the TV perched atop an end table, which also contains a stereo.

“The navigation area,” Carl Pickering said, “is more similar to a flight deck than its usual nautical equivalent and can be used as an office or dining area, thanks to sliding tables.”

Lazzarini & Pickering continue the system of teak planes belowdecks to create the corridors and staterooms, though details about the area weren’t available. Outside, the teak theme appears in the after cockpit and a playpen on the foredeck. Here, we find picnic tables that retract flush with the deck, forming a sunbathing area.

The 118’s hull is narrow monohull with training wheels. It has its roots in high-speed naval craft and, as far as I can determine from the renderings, marries an extremely fine entry to an inverted W-shape planing surface. The design team volunteered only that the bow sections reduce vertical accelerations by 50 percent. This means a relatively smooth ride in a seaway. Her fine entry will split the waves, but the bow sections will gain buoyancy as the high chines dig into the water. By this time, most of the energy will have dissipated, so the crew won’t get slammed into the cabin sole. If I were drawing this bottom, I’d make the chine area a tunnel of something close to a semicircle. Ridding the bottom of flat surfaces reduces pounding. On the other hand, a flat surface at the planing area, which won’t leave the water, creates lift, so let’s look for a delta-shape flat way back aft.

Wally expects a top speed of 70 knots from the 118’s four engines-a pair of gas turbines and two diesel auxiliaries-turning two KaMeWa waterjets. I call the diesels auxiliaries because the helmsman will use them for low-speed maneuvering, turbines disengaged, and cruising at very low speeds. Each turbine/diesel duet couples to a clutched transfer box, which permits running one or both engines each side. This, too, is common on military craft.

If my assumptions about the bottom are skewed, I’ll be the first to admit it, but we’ll have to wait until hull number one splashes or I see her under construction. I do know the shape benefits from extensive tank testing.

Wally expects to launch hulls one and two during 2002. Right now, though, I think the Wallypower 118 is the most significant design of the past 14 years, the period I’ve devoted to studying how boats work and why. Like all brilliant works of art, functional or decorative, the 118 defies a simple interpretation. Her statement is far too powerful to permit any observer to settle on a middle ground. They’ll love her or hate her.

Let me be the first to say, “I love this design.”

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Wallypower 118 was built in 2002 by Italian shipyard Rodriquez Intermarine. With a composite hull and superstructure, she features naval architecture by Wally and Intermarine, and exterior and interior design by Lazzarini Pickering and Wally. This three waterjet and twin screw propulsion yacht measures 36 metres and can accommodate up to six guests cruising and sleeping.

Motor yacht Wallypower 118 is easily one of the most distinctive vessels on the water with her unique and striking exterior design. Capable of reaching high cruising speeds, her design was the result of extensive development and research that included exhausting testing. She has a steeply angled V-shaped and a stand-out deckhouse that crowns the super yacht.

Her hull colour can be likened to that of a chameleon; it’s dark green tone changes with alterations in the outside landscape and light. Her glass-sided deckhouse hides a generous saloon aft dressed in white and wood that creates somewhat of a beach house feel. Here also lies a dining table for 14, relaxing nooks and entertainment areas.

Her interior is of minimalist design, and instead of showy extras, the majority of her features serve a purpose; towards weight minimisation, speed enhancement or must-have comfort. However she also boasts her share of soft furnishings that give the interior a look not far from a New York style loft.

Amongst her three cabins are an indulgent owner’s stateroom, and two Queen-size guest cabins. The owner’s stateroom features an en suite with his and hers shower and large tub, while each guest cabin also features an en suite. The crew’s quarters on the lower deck includes three lower cabins that sleep six and include en suite facilities.

Luxury yacht Wallypower 118 is powered by three DDC TF50 gas Turbines and two Cummins 370 horsepower engines; a combination quite common on smaller warships but not so on super yachts. She can achieve a range of 380 nautical miles while cruising at a speed of 60 knots or 1,500 nautical miles at nine knots.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Wallypower 118 is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 60 knots while her crew of six ensure the needs of every guest are met. The luxury vessel has been built to R.I.N.A classification.

“You look around the market today and I would say that 95 per cent of yachts from 40 to 140 feet have copied Genie of the Lamp. That kind of layout, that kind of style and deck, it’s clear. I don’t think it’s too much to say that Genie has influenced the last 20 years.” - "Today, everyone has ‘invented’ the vertical bow. We didn’t invent it, it was invented in the 19th century, even before that, but when we introduced it in 2003, everyone was against it. Even the naval architects, they were saying, ‘no, this boat will have big problems’. And now everyone understands that there are a lot of advantages in having a vertical bow. And everyone is claiming they invented it!” - Luca Bassani, founder and president of Wally

wallypower 118

The 118 WallyPower is one of the most eye-catching yachts in today’s luxury boating market, created by the Monaco-based Wally Yachts. It is narrow and angular in design with black glass housing.

It is 118 feet long and is capable of reaching speeds as fast as 60 knots (70 mph, 110 km/h).

It is capable of this feat due to three Vericor TF50 gas turbines generating 16,800 hp. The three gas turbines each drive a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet, two steerable outboard and a non-steering booster on centerline. The steerable water jets also have a diesel engine input for a 370 hp Cummins diesel hence these two wing drive trains are Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine (CODOG).

Wally Yachts did extensive testing in the SSPA facility in Gothenburg, Sweden and at Ferrari’s windtunnel in Italy.

118 WallyPowerLuxury Yacht

The 118 WallyPower is superbly crafted of exotic materials in and out, with thin wood veneers over honeycomb cores and lots of exposed black carbon fiber.

The 118 WallyPower won the MYDA, Millennium Yacht Design Award, organised by Seatec (the yachting and shipping technology show of Carrarafiere) for the “Layout of the Third Millennium.”

The WallyPower is also being honoured by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as the sole boat in its major architecture and design exhibition, ‘Glamour: Fabricating Affluence’, which ran from October 9 2004 to January 16 2005.

118 WallyPower Luxury Yacht

Wally Yachts has only produced one, and it currently resides in the Mediterranean. The 118 is known by most from its role as the “Renovatio” in the 2005 science-fiction film The Island.

Price? $24 million- and the Wally owner should budget, say, $400,000 a year for a professional crew. Wally is awaiting a firm order before building the next 118.

The company might have to wait a while. “I don’t think it’s a marketable product,” says Roger Marshall, a yacht designer and boating writer.

“It’s a high-speed boat that is way overpowered and expensive as hell to run, so the market consists of very few people.”

VERICOR NEWS

Vericor power systems’ tf50 gas turbines to power wallypower 118 high-speed yachts.

118 wallypower yacht

Three Vericor Power Systems' TFT50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht.

This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts.

The 118-foot yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only. The wing engines will drive steerable waterjets while the center boost TF50 will drive a fixed waterjet. Total propulsion system output will be 16,800 horsepower/ 12,533 kilowatts (see attached line drawing of the propulsion system configuration).

Cruising speed will be 60 knots, with a maximum speed of 70 knots. Table 1 shows the technical specifications for the 118 Wallypower yacht.

Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) packaged the CODOG system for the 118 Wallypower yacht. DDC, a Vericor Power Systems marine systems distributor, is part of MTU-Friedrichshafen, a division of DaimlerChrysler Powersystems. DaimlerChrysler is one of the world's leading manufacturers of marine propulsion engines and systems.

The integrated system includes three TF50 gas turbines, controls, Maag gears, as well as fuel, lube, cooling and exhaust components. Table 2 illustrates the commercial marine specifications for the TF50 gas turbine.

A team comprised of Vericor Power Systems and DDC field service engineers will install and conduct sea trials for the high-speed yacht. Installation of the CODOG system on the Wally Yacht is scheduled for March 2002. Sea trials are to follow in April/ May 2002.

Yacht Experience Other commercial applications of Vericor's TF engines include the high-speed yacht Detroit Eagle. The vessel uses a TF50 aeroderivative marine gas turbine, marking the first such engine to begin operation. The megayacht, which can reach a comfortable cruising speed of approximately 35 knots, completed sea trials in the spring of 2001 and is now in operation.

The yacht was built at the Feadship de Vries shipyard in The Netherlands. This is the second Feadship yacht fitted with TF gas turbines. The 161-foot Sussurro yacht launched in 1998 features a TF80 (2xTF40) gas turbine system.

The "Mangusta" series yachts, being built by Overmarine Shipyard, in Viareggio, Italy, use TF40 and TF50 gas turbines. Five yachts use a total of five TF40 and two TF50 gas turbines in a variety of configurations. Four Mangusta yachts are now in full operation, with the fifth yacht in the series under construction.

The TF engines for all of the above applications were provided by Vericor Power Systems.

Wallypower 118 - the coolest luxury yacht in the world

The Wallypower 118 is a luxury yacht that gained widespread attention after it was featured in the 2005 science-fiction thriller movie "The Island." The yacht was designed and built by the Italian yacht manufacturer Wally Yachts and was launched in 2006. It is an ultra-modern and luxurious vessel that is designed to combine speed, style, and comfort.

In the movie "The Island," the Wallypower 118 is the personal yacht of the main antagonist, Dr. Merrick, played by Sean Bean . The yacht is depicted as an impressive vessel, sleek and stylish with a futuristic design that is fitting for the movie's sci-fi theme.

It measures 118 feet in length, thus the name, with a beam of 26 feet, and a draft of 5 feet. It can accommodate up to ten guests in five staterooms, and it has a crew of six. The yacht is powered by three gas turbines that generate a total of 16,800 horsepower, allowing it to reach a top speed of 60 knots, or about 70 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest yachts on the open seas .

118 wallypower yacht

It's exterior design is striking and unique, with sleek lines and a minimalist style. The superstructure is made of carbon fiber, which makes the yacht lightweight and adds to its impressive speed. It's innovative propulsion system includes water jets instead of traditional propellers , which further contribute to its speed and maneuverability.

The interior is equally impressive , with a contemporary minimalist design, much like the outside. The main salon features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding water. The yacht's state-of-the-art entertainment system includes a plasma screen TV, satellite TV, and a surround-sound system. The master suite is located on the main deck and features a king-size bed, an en-suite bathroom, and a private balcony. The guest cabins are located on the lower deck and offer similar amenities and luxurious finishes.

It has become an icon in the world of yachting, renowned for its futuristic design and advanced technology. In "The Island," the Wallypower 118 is portrayed as the ultimate symbol of power and luxury , a fitting representation of the antagonist's character.

In conclusion, this is a remarkable yacht that has captured the imagination of people worldwide. Its characteristics have made it a standout vessel in the yachting world, and its appearance in a hollywood production has only added to its mystique.

118 wallypower yacht

The price of the 118 Wallypower is US$33 million for the triple gas turbine version , or $22 million for twin diesels. It has a range of 1,500 nautical miles (2,800 km) at 9 knots (17 km/h), or 300 nautical miles (560 km) at 60 knots (110 km/h). Fuel capacity is 22,000 liters (5800 US gallons). At the maximum speed of 60 knots (110 km/h) the gas turbine uses 15 US gallons / 58 liters of fuel per nautical mile, 900 gallons / 3500 liters per hour . The boat displaces only 95 tons because of the sophisticated building technology that uses a hybrid structure to save weight, and can accommodate six guests and six crew.

It is worth noting that the final cost of a Wallypower 118 can be significantly higher than the base price due to the customization options available. Owners of the yacht can choose from a range of options such as interior finishes, materials, and technology upgrades, all of which can add to the cost of the yacht.

Exactly one has been built .

118 WallyPower Yacht… The Majesty of the See

118 wallypower yacht

The 118 WallyPower yacht is, to put it in the briefest terms, an undisputed masterpiece. Christened the “Galeocerdo”, it has grabbed the eye of all who see its dark visage, and though its appearance alone is, to say the very least, impressive, the finer details are just as incredible. You could scour the excellent yacht harbours of Monaco or Abu Dhabi, glimpse all their seafaring wonders and yet fail to spot something that carries the same honed, dramatic presence. Beneath the exterior lies three gas turbines. These turbines pump out a gargantuan 5,600 bhp, and each drives a Rolls Royce KaMeWa Waterjet. A 370 bhp diesel engine aids the two jets that help steer the vast craft. Overall, the 118 WallyPower rockets across the waves with a combined output of 16,800 bhp. Such colossal power bolts the yacht to a top speed of 60 knots or 70 mph. Such speed is hardly reached even for far smaller boats.

118 wallypower yacht

And it can keep up such a speed for a range of 300 nautical miles. However, its power source isn’t totally thanks, as the sharp knife body shape, with smoke testing conducted at Ferrari’s wind tunnel in Maranello, helps cut through the waves like scissors through the cloth.

118 wallypower yacht

Beyond its mechanical prowess lies the most exquisite interior, where the focus on performance can still be visible. Inside the cabin are carbon fibre window frames, and the whole deck’s superstructure is a carbon frame in the 118 WallyPower’s pursuit of lightness. Even the bath fixtures and the dining tables are made from the carbon in the drive to keep the weight low. Such advanced and clever building ideas allow the boat only to weigh 95 tons.

118 wallypower yacht

This less is more approach cannot only be seen in its engineering but also in its cabin style. The dining area, deck, navigation and cockpit are all continuous elements, creating an open space that suits the 118 WallyPower’s breezy nature. Comparisons can easily be drawn to that of a swanky, new-age metropolitan apartment or even the understated flamboyance of a spy villain’s lair! The deck’s appearance has a sense of practicality too. Two of the dining tables can be mechanically lowered to offer more room, and the dining and lounge area is placed away from the heat of the engines.

118 wallypower yacht

Head deeper inside this gloriously suave vessel, and you’ll find six televisions at your leisure and a small, stainless steel kitchen that wouldn’t look too out of place on the set of science fiction films. Coincidently, the 118 WallyPower did indeed gets its moment in the spotlight by appearing in the 2005 thriller “The Island”.

118 wallypower yacht

Three bedrooms can be found below the deck. The owner’s stateroom acts as the largest, bearing the comfort of a king-size bed and a pair of en suites, complete with a skylight. A couple of guest rooms are also available, each with a queen-size bed and an en suite. Putting into detail how a yacht perfectly capable of housing six people in refined, palatial splendour truly puts into perspective the technological brilliance in achieving such a low weight and high speed.

118 wallypower yacht

In such a vast world of water, it seems a shame to have such a masterpiece be so rare to find. That being said, perhaps it only fits and remains one of a kind. Currently, the 118 WallyPower is one of a kind and owned by the Kondakji family. That exclusivity level can reinforce its place as an icon on the waves and a marvellous representative of pushing the boundaries of yacht design. Some day there will be faster and more luxurious power yachts than the 118 WallyPower, but they will never make anyone forget their mesmerising presence.

WALLYPOWER 118

wallypower 118 model

WallyPower 118 is the fastest motor yacht on water. Three gas turbines generating 16,800 HP power allows the 118 WallyPower to cruise a leisurely 60 knots in flat seas and tackle rough waters with ease. The yacht is narrow and angular in design, driven by three Vericor TF50 gas turbines generating 5,600 horsepower (each driving a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet), two steerable outboard and a non-steering booster on the centerline. The steerable water jets also have a diesel engine input for a 370 hp, thus making the ship a Combined Diesel or Gas Turbine configured vessel.  If the gas turbine engines are all out, the 118 WallyPower uses 14 gallons for every mile at 60 knots. At this rate it uses 951 gallons an hour.

wallypower 118

The hull of the 118 WallyPower is the result of an extensive R&D program including tank testing at the SSPA facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, and smoke testing in the Ferrari Wind Tunnel Facility in Maranello, Italy. It is stable at speed thanks to the deep V (22 degrees) hull shape and a straight stem bow designed to pierce waves.

The 118's deck, cockpit, navigation, dining and saloon areas have been designed as one continuous element. The open space incorporates three areas, from stern to bow: the saloon, the dining/seating area, and the navigation cockpit. There is a 360-degree view from the dining area. The deck of the Wally 118 has a hidden crane and compartment for a tender.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

F1 News: Major Mercedes Sponsorship Comes To An End After Lewis Hamilton Exit

Mercedes' partnership with Tommy Hilfiger has come to an end.

  • Author: Lydia Mee

Formula One is heading to Miami for the fifth stage of the 2023 season.

Mercedes ' fashion partnership landscape is undergoing a major overhaul, transitioning from Tommy Hilfiger to Adidas in a move that signals a new era for the team. This shift coincides with the departure of their celebrated driver, Lewis Hamilton .

Key Takeaways:

  • The collaboration between Mercedes and Tommy Hilfiger concludes, making way for a fresh partnership with Adidas, starting from the 2025 season.
  • With a deal purported to exceed the financial gains from previous sponsors, Mercedes aims to demonstrate their enduring market appeal post-Lewis Hamilton.
  • Amidst the uncertainties surrounding Hamilton's replacement and a challenging season, Mercedes is navigating through a period of significant change.

As Mercedes prepares for a future beyond Lewis Hamilton, a significant rebranding effort is underway with the introduction of Adidas as their new partner, effective from the 2025 season. This collaboration, highlighted by the Daily Mail , is expected to redefine the team's identity, covering both casual wear and race gear.

Financially, the partnership with Adidas is set to be a landmark deal for Mercedes, anticipated to bring in a significant revenue increase compared to their previous arrangements with Puma and Tommy Hilfiger, which notably contributed around six million euros to the team. This substantial financial injection from Adidas not only benefits Mercedes but also marks a pivotal moment for the sportswear brand, especially following their recent departure from a decades-long association with the German national football team.

The transition period for Mercedes is compounded by the uncertainty of Hamilton's successor and a less-than-ideal start to the current season, with the team currently positioned fourth in the standings after the first three races. Team chief Toto Wolff has recently discussed some of the potential drivers being considered for Hamilton's seat in 2025. Those who were mentioned included Carlos Sainz, who the seven-time champion is replacing at Ferrari, two-time champion Fernando Alonso, Red Bull's lead driver Max Verstappen, and Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

  • By Yachting Staff
  • January 9, 2024

Lürssen Lady Lara

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

Lürssen Lady Lara

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

Lürssen Lady Lara

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

Lürssen Lady Lara

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Why the Mercedes F1 team is getting involved in yacht racing

mercedes f1 yacht
