Mega Yacht Crewing Jobs

CruiseJobFinder also specializes in helping people find great yacht crew jobs on privately owned sailboats and luxury yachts. This can range from a 50-foot sailboat sailing through the Mediterranean to a mega yacht, owned by one of the world's richest individuals, which is sailing all over the globe. These types of jobs are a great alternative to working on a cruise ship and offer a truly unique experience.

Working Aboard a Luxury Yacht: An Overview

Imagine your days full of work where you will meet people from all over the world, travel to exotic destinations, eat gourmet meals with a private chef and feel the breeze of the ocean air right in your office. Seems a little far fetched right?

Yacht crewing photo

Charter yachts take guests on a single or multi-day trip for a fee. Some of these yachts may be commercially owned by a large corporation while others are owned by private individuals who commonly act as captain.

What about mega yachts such as those owned by Saudi princes and the billionaires of the world like Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, and famous golfer Tiger Woods? Mega Yachts, luxury yachts and superyachts are all yachts that are 78 feet or more. These vessels can cost from one million U.S. dollars or more.

Finally, smaller yachts are much more affordable than they once were and more captains are buying their own yacht and pushing off anchor to explore the world on their own terms.

No matter the size of the vessel a crew is necessary.

Start your search for your Dream Job Today!

Unlike the busy cruise lines, working on private yachts offers an opportunity to work with a small amount of guests and co workers. The intimate setting paints a pretty picture enabling crew members to bond closely with their fellow crew members, employers and guests that make take passage upon the yacht they work for.

Yachting etiquette must be portrayed and a sense of adventure is a must!

Lucas Urruty Officer of the Watch (OOW) "I started yachting 7 years ago, from not knowing the industry at all to getting my first OOW position last year. I remember in the first stages of my training I had nobody to guide me on how or in what order or priority to do my modules. I followed the yacht route, and up until now I have always gone back to Yotspot in my career to see what requirements, sea time and courses I need and in what order as a reference. I have booked at least 4 of my modules through Yotspot and even got my current job thanks to the site. It has changed the game in our industry regarding crew, training and so much more, highly recommend! "
Liubov Chunikhovska Ex Chief Stewardess (MY Luna, 100m) "If you're looking for a job or recruiting crew I personally think that Yotspot is the best service in the industry. It basically has everything you need in one place. Yotspot has been crucial to work with professionals and provides a high-level of support. Thank you Yotspot Team and wishing you inspiration to keep going with new ideas along with success!"

I have chosen to look on this platform because it offers full spectrum of options that you want to include in your search such as temporary or rotational position. I haven't seen it on any other yacht job search site and I always found it super useful to specify your search like that and look for the best option for me. Yotspot is a time saver. I have found my current job on it and I am very grateful for that. I will definitely recommend it to any yachtie to create a profile and search for his or her dream job on Yotspot as it's definitely somewhere there!"

Yachting into remote work: job opportunities at sea

Before diving into the different job opportunities, it's crucial to understand the various modes in which to embark on a career while living aboard a yacht. Among the most common is being employed remotely, where one is typically integrated within a company's workforce, collaborating with colleagues and teams from a virtual platform. This setup emulates a traditional job setting, delivering consistent pay and job security but with the invaluable perk of location independence.

Then, there's the enticing prospect of freelancing. This approach bestows autonomy, allowing seafarers to cherry-pick projects that align with their unique skills and interests. However, this route frequently necessitates proactive client acquisition and adept self-management. Digital nomads must remain agile, adjusting sails based on client demands and shifting deadlines.

Venturing further, another compelling option is the entrepreneurial journey: piloting your own business or startup from the deck of your motorboat. This path intertwines business responsibilities with the capricious rhythms of maritime life. However, it provides unparalleled control over work hours and business strategies, with the horizon being the only limit to potential growth and innovation.

10 Jobs for digital nomads on motorboats

Financial planning & advising : Utilize platforms like MoneyGuidePro or eMoney to provide clients with strategic financial guidance, asset management, and investment strategies.

Buying a boat to live on: what to consider?

Purchasing a motorboat for living and working purposes is distinct from buying one for mere recreation. A deep-V hull, for instance, would be excellent for smooth rides in choppy waters, while an expansive and ergonomic interior design would be crucial for both living and workspace comfort.

Specifications to look for in liveaboard boats

Countries and regions ideal for motor boat living.

Life on a motorboat offers diverse lifestyle options that can vary vastly based on individual preference and, more importantly, location. There are those who prefer marina/harbor living, valuing the stability and amenities a permanent dock provides. Perks typically come in the form of electricity, water, laundry facilities, and sometimes Wi-Fi, ensuring daily life isn't too detached from the onshore world.

On the other hand, the allure of continuous cruising beckons many; it's an ever-changing adventure, swapping out skylines and coastlines at will. The challenge here lies in constantly adapting to different harbor facilities and sourcing essential amenities when anchored in remote spots. For some, a blended approach works best: mooring in marinas for extended periods, then cruising when wanderlust strikes.

Setting sail vs. anchoring down: legal considerations

Choosing a specific country as a base has its perks, especially from a legal standpoint. Settling in one place means you'll have to adhere to that nation's marine and residential laws, often leading to a more streamlined understanding of local regulations, tax obligations, and visa requirements. Several countries like Greece, Belize, Dominica, and Malta now offer digital nomad visas, granting individuals the chance to stay and work for a set period of time.

Conversely, hopping between countries every few weeks requires staying on top of diverse marine regulations, entry requirements, and varying visa durations. One must be vigilant about the visa's purpose too; some might permit tourist stays but have strict rules around working. Navigating these waters demands thorough research, but for those willing, it offers a dynamic blend of work and exploration.

Man looking on his phone on a sailing yacht

“IYRS really tugged at my heart, though, and I felt it would create an opportunity in the future to be teaching something a little bit more pragmatic than factoring quadratic equations,” Willis said. “There's a lot of talk about the importance of STEM. Well, if you want STEM, you need look no further than a marine diesel engine or electrical system.”

How the International Yacht Restoration School programs work

IYRS was founded, in 1993, as the International Yacht Restoration School. Founders Elizabeth Meyer and John Mecray envisioned a a true wooden boat restoration program. The school over three decades has grown to now offer four programs of study – boat building and restoration (20 months), composites technology (9 months), digital modeling and fabrication (9 months), and marine systems (6 months). All four programs have been accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.

According to Julia McCann, IYRS director of marketing, the majority of the school's students are career changers, and the externship program is a key component of making the switch effective for students. She noted that IYRS collaborates with highly-regarded industry partners for both externships and job placement. Students and alumni can access the IYRS job portal. The school, she said, has an 85 percent job placement average for grads, with hobbyists accounting for a portion of the 15 percent.

“IYRS graduates typically excel fast in their new careers,” she said, “rising to new roles and opportunities with their employers.”

More: RIC's cybersecurity institute plans to grow with AI courses and new 'cyber range'

In a blog post on the IYRS website, Willis noted that marine systems students enjoy multiple field trips to boat yards, electronics shops, and suppliers and get to hear from guests speakers and enjoyed a career day filled with employers from Maine to California. One day, he said, three vice-presidents from nationwide Safe Harbor Marinas visited the students. The students, he said, also had the pleasure of Al Thomason, co-founder of engine-base charge control company Wakespeed, spending a day with them.

The IYRS' very concentrated education model – essentially five full work days per week – rapidly takes students from Day 1 to work force ready. Willis said that with their savings and his wife's income and some spending adjusting when needed, they were able to financially handle his paying for school and being out of work for half a year. They saw it and now see it as a wise investment. He described his wife as “incredibly supportive” during the new career adventure.

Students of all ages and experience levels

Willis said his fellow IYRS students included those right out of high school as well as people retiring from the Navy and Coast Guard. He said he immensely enjoyed the support of his cohorts. Some of his fellow students are taking a career paths to Maine, to the Caribbean, with others sticking around to help continue the state's history of master boat building.

Willis said he was experiencing some nerves leading up to his back-to-school start date. Those nerves were soothed, he said, on Day 1 when IYRS brought all the students into the boat building and restoration area and emphasized the inclusive school culture. That, he said, was followed by two weeks of message reinforcement.

“They could write the book on what it takes to create a safe learning environment, and I don't just mean safety with tools, although they are good at that, too,” he said.

Combining technical knowledge with practical skills

Born in England and raised on Massachusetts' North Shore, Wills said that while he lived most of his life near the ocean, his passion for boats and the maritime world did not surface until 2020. Due to COVID, he and his wife were itching for outdoor activities. They took sailing lessons. (“She enjoys it, I'm a bit of a nut about it,” he said.). They subsequently bought a 37-foot sailboat built in 1999.

When he was teaching algebra and pre-calculus at Blackstone Valley Charter School, Willis said that when he showed students pictures of some of the electrical work he was doing on his boat, some of them said they weren't smart enough to do such work. Wills said he knew his students were plenty smart enough, and got him thinking seriously about IYRS and that perhaps what he really should be doing is helping children connect into the maritime trades.

That dream still lives.

“I am exiting the Marine Systems program with what I feel is world class fundamental skills as a marine electrician/mechanic,” he said. “There is huge demand out there for this, with the opportunity to become highly skilled and specialized.

“I still want to teach, and eventually would like to be involved in a 'semester-at-sea' style program that is accessible to kids who may not have had the chance to be out on the water, and also includes a maritime trades element in the curriculum.”

Want to be a guide?: Newport Historical Society tours are expanding to meet demand

The cost of the marine systems program starting in the fall is about $25,700. Federal financial aid and other grants and scholarships are available.

Willis said the starting pay for marine systems graduates ranges from $25 to $30 per hour. He said he plans to work part-time and then enter the IYRS' 20-month Boatbuilding and Restoration Program. Local boat builders, he said, have told him marine systems plus BBR is a “highly desirable combination.”

“Nick’s story,” McCann said, “is typical in that most of our students are seeking to align a passion or interest to work with their hands with a way to earn a living or follow through on a life-long dream. In Nick’s case, he was initially looking to combine his love of teaching with his passion for sailing. After completing IYRS’s marine systems program, he is exploring other opportunities that he wasn’t aware of prior to enrollment.”

A BRITISH man has died after being electrocuted while carrying out work on a yacht in Antigua.

Roy Temme, 47, was found slumped over and unresponsive aboard the luxury vessel Baton Rouge moored in a harbour.

Temme, who was serving as the Chief Engineer on board the vessel, was confronted with a power outage while the yacht was anchored off the Caribbean island.

In an attempt to resolve the issue, he ventured into the engine area.

But he was later discovered unresponsive by a crew member who went to check on him.

Police and paramedics were called to the vessel at 8.30am local time on Friday.

Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

A spokesman for the Royal Antigua Police Force said: "A UK national was helped to the main deck, while the Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue-ABSAR was called to the scene.

"He was transported to the hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead around 10:19 am."

A local Port official said officers were called to reports "of concern for the welfare of a man on board a boat in English Harbour".

The official added: "Immediate Action was needed after establishing that he didn't look well.

"The paramedics arrived and did their best but sadly he died. He was in his 40s."

The Baton Rouge yacht had been in the harbour since late January.

Authorities are conducting further investigations into Temme's death.

A spokesman from the port authority said: "We will be making initial enquiries and will be liaising with the authorities to make sure it is an accident as has been thought.

"We cannot say too much more at this stage until we complete our investigation."

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

Yacht Russia at Moscow Dive Show 2020

Yacht Russia at Moscow Dive Show 2020

The largest water man exhibition in Eastern Europe, the Moscow Dive Show, is held annually in Moscow.

Yacht Russia at Moscow Dive Show 2020

The yachting space of the exhibition expanded every year and today it is not just dedicated stands and the opportunity to offer our products and services, but also a full-fledged four-day forum for the exchange of experience, communication and new useful acquaintances in the world of yachting. This is a great opportunity to talk about yachting to those who would like to learn yachting, but do not know where to start.

The cultural program of Moscow Dive Show 2020 will include a large yacht block with speeches by reputable sailors on a variety of topics – from the first steps in yachting to life hacks and recommendations from experienced yachtsmen. So it won’t be boring!

This year Yacht Russia magazine will present its stand at the exhibition, where you can find out about our plans, projects and, of course, purchase magazines. And of course, we will prepare pleasant surprises for the guests of the exhibition.

In addition, visitors to the exhibition are waiting for:

– decisive discounts on virtually everything – on equipment, travel packages and training courses. You can bargain, compare, choose the best and get first-hand advice.

– A whole pavilion of delicacies – from mussels and crab to shrimp and oysters, from homemade cheeses to smoked lard. Fruit drinks, craft beer and mulled wine so appropriate in February. In the pavilion, you can sit at the table and have a full lunch.

– Children's program. For young visitors a separate day is provided in which they can take part in master classes and competitions. Entrance to the exhibition for children under 12 years old is free.

– Hour of presents! The time when each visitor can get a really valuable prize, just for coming to the Moscow Dive Show 2020. For sailors, a separate prize category is provided so that the gift is really needed.

Tickets are already on sale. The cost of admission until February 5 is 400 rubles. On the opening day of the exhibition, tickets will cost 500 rubles. Buy in advance. You can purchase a ticket through the official website of the exhibition at http://www.diveshow.ru/show/bilety/.

Exhibition Hours: February 6 (Thursday) from 10:00 to 20:00 February 7 (Friday) from 10:00 to 21:00 February 8 (Saturday) from 10:00 to 21:00 February 9 (Sunday) from 10:00 to 18:00

The schedule of performances, the layout of the stands of participants, information on how to get to the exhibition center and how to purchase tickets can be found on the official website of the event at http://www.diveshow.ru/

We are waiting for you from February 6 to 9 in Moscow, at the Sokolniki Exhibition Center (Pavilions 4 and 4.1). Look for our booth next to the small stage in Pavilion 4.1 (on the floor plan, the small stage is indicated by a yacht).
