  • Chess Openings – Ultimate Guide to the Openings of Chess

The King’s Pawn Opening, beginning with 1. e4,  is one of white’s most popular and aggressive options to begin a chess game.

White puts a pawn on e4 to start the game

White immediately takes control of the center and opens lines of development for his pieces – it’s clear that 1. e4 is very much in line with opening principles. The King’s Pawn Opening has been the favorite move of many top-tier chess players, and World Champion Bobby Fischer even called it “Best by test.”

As discussed in the video above, Black has several responses to the King’s Pawn Opening.  I’m going to break them down into three categories:

  • Black seizes their own share of central space immediately (The symmetrical 1…e5 or the more double-edged Sicilian Defense: 1…c5 )
  • Black strikes at the white center with his d-pawn. (The immediate 1…d5 is the Scandinavian Defense , while playing 1…e6 or 1…c6 with the intention of following up with 2…d5 constitute the well-respected French Defense and Caro-Kann Defense , respectively)
  • Other defenses where black does not seek to occupy the center with a pawn. White will often be allowed to build a large center, but all is not lost for black, as we’ll soon see!

____________________________________________________

Black Occupies the Center: 1…e5

Black copied white's initial move

For much of chess’s history, 1. e4 e5 was by far the most common way for a game to begin.  We’ve talked about the advantages of white’s first move, so why should black not want to copy it?

Indeed, 1…e5 is good for all the same reasons that 1. E4 is good. This is the reply most often taught to beginners, and it’s popular all the way up to the World Championship level. Black ensures a stronghold for himself in the center and opens lines for his pieces to develop.

We’ll spend a lot of time on this option, as so many opening variations split off from here!

White usually continues with the extremely logical 2. Nf3.  It’s hard to ask for more out of an opening move than this – white develops a knight, gets closer to castling kingside, and directly threatens black’s e5 pawn! 2…Nc6 is the most popular response – black defends the threat against e5 and develops a piece of his own.

We’ll consider alternatives to 2. Nf3 and 2…Nc6 at the end of this section – but first, let’s take a look at how the game can proceed from the following position:

Black put the knight on the c6 square

  • Bb5 , the Ruy Lopez , perhaps the most well-known of the King’s Pawn Openings, is among the oldest of chess openings – it’s named after a 16 th century Spanish priest, after all!

And it’s still popular for a reason . White develops a bishop, gets one step closer to castling, and gives black something to worry about: At the right moment, white might be threatening to later exchange this bishop for the black knight on c6, leaving black’s e5 pawn undefended!

  • Bc4 , the Italian Game , is another popular choice for white. White’s bishop menacingly eyes the f7 square – the weakest point in the black position – and white’s ready to castle next turn if desired.
  • d4 constitutes the Scotch Game . White decides it’s time to open up the center and create some pawn tension before continuing with piece development.
  • c3 , the Ponziani Opening , is a tricky one to handle. White’s idea is very ambitious: White would like to play 4. d4 on the next turn, but unlike in the Scotch (see above), if black exchanges his e-pawn for the d-pawn, white would be able to recapture with a pawn and maintain a dominate grip in the center!
  • Nc3 often leads to the Four Knights Game after black plays the natural 3…Nf6. The position remains symmetrical, and a bit dull for my liking compared to white’s more ambitious options listed above – but hey, it can’t be a bad thing to have the move in a symmetrical position!

Before moving on, let’s consider some second-move alternatives for both white and black after 1. e4 e5 :

Instead of the hugely popular 2. Nf3 , white has some alternatives:

  • f4 is the aggressive King’s Gambit . White immediately seeks to dislodge black’s e5 pawn from its stronghold in the center – even at the cost of losing a pawn!
  • Nc3 is the Vienna Game. This may transpose into a Four Knights Game (see above) if white plays Nf3 within the next couple moves, but there are some independent lines – including the idea to play a delayed King’s Gambit by playing f4 in the near future.
  • d4 is the Center Game. After 2…exd4, white can either recapture with the queen, or play the aggressive 3. c3. This is the Danish Gambit – white sacrifices a pawn to try to get a lead in development.
  • Bc4 , developing a bishop, is certainly reasonable, but it’s hard for this King’s Pawn Opening to stay in original territory unless white follows up with some speculative moves. White is likely to play Nf3 or Nc3 soon, transposing to an Italian Opening or Vienna Game (see above). However, some unique lines such as the Urusov Gambit are possible!

Other options such as 2. Qh5 ( The Wayward Queen Attack ), exist as well, but are generally considered to be no threat to black with proper play.

After 2. Nf3 , black has some options of their own, if they wish to forgo the logical 2…Nc6 :

Black is considering what move to play

2…Nf6 is the Petrov Defense .  Rather than defending the e-pawn, black counterattacks white’s e-pawn!

2…d6 is the Philidor Defense .  Black calmly defends the e5 pawn and clears the path for his light bishop to develop.

2…f5?! and 2…d5?! are the Latvian Gambit and so-called Elephant Gambit , respectively.   These pawn thrusts are considered rather dubious, but can be tricky against an unprepared opponent.

2…f6? Is the quite flawed Damiano Defense.   This is not the way to defend the e-pawn! White can ignore the f6 pawn and take on e5 anyways.  3. Nxe5! Refutes this black set-up.

Black occupies the center: 1…c5 – The Sicilian Defense

Black plays the Sicilian

The Sicilian Defense is an aggressive, ambitious defense to the King’s Pawn Opening that attracts players of all levels. Black seizes their share of central space, in accordance with opening principles – but creates a stark imbalance in the position from the very first move.

At first glance, this move appears inferior to playing 1…e5. Black gains space in the Sicilian, but the move 1…c5 doesn’t open as many paths for pieces to develop.   Only the queen is uncovered by this pawn move, and we know that the queen usually doesn’t develop early!

But let’s consider white’s options:

It’s true that white is likely to obtain a lead in development in the Sicilian , but if white wants to open the center to try to make use of it before black catches up, white will likely need to play d4 at some point.  Then black gets to exchange his c-pawn for white’s more-central d-pawn.  Black obtains the long-term-advantage of having two central pawns compared to white’s one, and meanwhile the black position is compact and free of weaknesses.

Of course, white has other options if they don’t wish to play an early d4 pawn break. Sometimes white will play an early f4 and build up slowly on the kingside, where white is assured of a space advantage.  Black often builds up on the queenside in such cases, and sometimes organizes a strike in the center himself with …d5 , once his piece development justifies it.

No matter what white does, black is assured of an imbalanced, dynamic game – a Sicilian Defense player’s dream!

Black Strikes at the Center: 1…d5 – The Scandinavian Defense

Black plays the Scandinavian

Immediately striking at white’s King’s Pawn has a certain appeal. Black makes it immediately clear that white’s e-pawn will not be allowed to remain on e4 for long!

The downside to this move, from black’s perspective, is that after 2. exd5 , black is not able to recapture with a pawn. After 2…Qxd5 , white often just plays 3. Nc3 , kicking the queen away while developing a piece.  After the queen moves away, white often plays 4. d4 – and once again, a white pawn stands alone in the center!

In light of this, the Scandinavian Defense is a rare guest in top-tier chess these days, but it’s certainly playable.  Black can have some tricks up his sleeve, and it’s not easy for white to make anything concrete out of his seemingly clear advantages.

Black Strikes at the Center: 1…e6 – The French Defense

Black plays the French

Playing 1…e6 and only then playing 2…d5 constitutes the French Defense to the King’s Pawn Opening.

Of course, the obvious downside to spending a move preparing to strike before lashing out in the center is that white gets another move to bolster their center! After 1. e4 e6, 2. d4 is by far the most popular move. White temporarily occupies the entire center, and both white bishops have open lines to develop on.

After 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5:

White is deciding how to respond to the threat

In contrast with the Scandinavian Defense (see above), 3. exd5 is now harmless, though playable. Black gets to recapture with the e-pawn instead of with the queen, and their central foothold is maintained .

Instead, white often plays 3. e5 – securing a space advantage and locking up the center – or else 3. Nd2 or 3. Nc3 , simply defending the threat to the e4 pawn.

One major disadvantage of the French Defense is that black’s light-square bishop on c8 is severely restricted by black’s pawns.   This can be a long-term problem for black throughout the game if black doesn’t succeed in solving the “problem of the bishop.”

Nonetheless, the French Defense remains popular at nearly all levels of chess.

Black Strikes at the Center: 1…c6 – The Caro-Kann Defense

Black plays c6 and is ready to play d5 next

Without the context of understanding the French and Scandinavian defenses above, it would be difficult to understand the purpose of this move.

To understand black’s plan, let’s consider the position after 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 , in analogy with the French Defense position in the above section:

Black strikes at the center with the d pawn

Black avoids the downside of the Scandinavian Defense – if white captures on d5, black is able to recapture with a pawn and maintain a grip of the center.

Black also seeks to avoid the downside of the French Defense! Black leaves the line of development for his light-squared bishop open for the time being.  Black desires to develop this bishop to f5 or g4, and only then play a later …e6 to open the path for the other bishop and complete development.

In many of the most common continuations, black succeeds in this aim. Rather than being a lame duck on c8 as in the French Defense, black’s light-squared-bishop in the Caro-Kann often finds a much happier fate.

So, is the Caro-Kann the best of both worlds? Not so fast. The obvious downside is that this clever operation takes time, and there’s no getting around the fact that 1…c6 just isn’t a very useful move for immediate piece development.

That said, the Caro remains a reputable opening employed by several Grandmasters – and has been a staple of my opening repertoire throughout my chess career, so I’m a bit partial!

Other Defenses: 1…Nf6 – The Alekhine Defense

Black attacks the white pawn

Named for World Champion Alexander Alekhine, this provocative move attacks white’s e-pawn from move 1 – before black assures himself of any central space!

The obvious downside to this opening is that white can play 2. e5 , gaining more space and kicking this knight away.  After 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. d4, White has a clear space advantage, and can even play c4 soon, gaining more space and kicking the black knight again!

Sometimes white plays c4 and f4 in the very near future – the “Four Pawns Attack.” White seeks to gain an overwhelming space advantage and deprive the black pieces of any good squares, in an attempt to punish black for the provocative opening choice!

Because of this, the Alekhine Defense has never been considered a top-tier defense to the King’s Pawn Opening, but it’s not as bad as it looks! White can overextend if they’re not careful, and black has some setups worked out that offer his pieces a chance to breathe freely despite white’s space advantage.  Black tries to tear down the white center – a process began by the nearly universal 3…d6.

Other Defenses: 1…d6 – The Pirc Defense

Black is ready to play Nf6 and attack the e pawn

The Pirc Defense is another option at black’s disposal where black doesn’t seek to occupy the center.  Black would like to play 2…Nf6 , attacking the white e-pawn, but first plays 1…d6 to avoid getting hit with an early e5 from white (as in the Alekhine Defense above)

Black often plays …g6, …Bg7, and …0-0 early on. While black doesn’t occupy the center directly, his knight and dark-square bishop exert pressure on white’s center from afar , and the black king will be safely tucked away.  Later on, black may try to organize a strike at the white center with …e5, …c5, or even …d5.

The flexibility of the Pirc has appealed to many chess players of all strengths.  But the downside is clear – white faces no challenge whatsoever to their central control early on , and is free to play 2. d4 and develop in nearly whatever way they please.

Other Defenses: 1…g6 – The Modern Defense

Black fianchettos the dark bishop

The Modern Defense is a close cousin of the Pirc Defense (see above), and often transposes to the Pirc if black plays …d6 and …Nf6 in the near future.  Black forgoes the fight for central dominance, in favor of flexibility and pressuring white’s center from afar by placing the dark bishop on g7.

Other Defenses: 1…b6 – The Owen Defense

Black fianchettos the light bishop

Black seeks to put their light bishop on b7 and attack the white e-pawn from afar. Black will often play …Nf6 soon to increase the pressure.

If white defends the e-pawn with Nc3 at some point, black sometimes plays …Bb4 (after first playing …e6 to free the path for the dark bishop), threatening to exchange off white’s defender of the e-pawn.  Sometimes black plays a later …d5 as well. Everything to target e4!

The downside, as with the Modern defense and Pirc defense, is clear – White often ends up with a space advantage because black isn’t contesting the center early on. The Owen Defense is one of black’s rarest defenses to the King’s Pawn Opening.

Note that we can arrive at the Owen Defense via different move orders as well, such as 1. e4 e6 2. d4 b6. Despite starting with 1…e6, this can hardly be called a “French Defense” when black’s idea wasn’t to prepare the …d5 thrust.  Black transposes to the Owen Defense by playing the characteristic early …b6.

Other Defenses: 1…Nc6 – The Nimzowitsch Defense

White can take the center anyways

Nimzowitsch was no doubt a giant of chess, but he’s better known for some of his other contributions to opening theory than this one.  1…Nc6 does nothing to prevent white from playing 2. d4 , as white’s d-pawn is defended by the queen.

White can also play 2. Nf3 , allowing black to transpose to a standard 1. e4 e5 Opening after 2…e5. Black’s attempts to avoid transposing to a dual King’s Pawn Opening are mostly either passive (2…d6) or somewhat dubious (2…f5).  And if black IS okay with playing 2…e5 and transposing… one might wonder why they’re not just playing 1…e5 on move one to begin with!

The Nimzowitsch Defense has never had any mainstream appeal, but developing a piece on move one can’t be all bad.

Other Defenses: Miscellaneous

Other first moves by black, besides all those mentioned above, are generally not taken seriously. Moves such as 1…a6?! , 1…h6?! , or 1…f6 don’t accomplish anything at all. White can proceed with 2. d4 and gain more space.

King’s Pawn Opening

As the name suggests, this chess opening begins after White goes two squares forward ( 1.e4 ) with their pawn. The King’s Pawn Opening is a noble weapon that has been utilized since the game’s invention.

King's Pawn Opening

Its roots are almost the same as the game’s, around the 600s. King’s Pawn Opening has been used until today, maybe more than the sum of the other choices combined. As a skeleton of all the sequels it brings, it can pass the game through various phases. Its rich lines are all sorts and give the ability to transition through endless types of scenes for both parties. Nowadays, they are known as the most pervasive road for almost all levels with its peer 1.d4 .

King’s Pawn Opening

The King’s Pawn Opening is the most popular choice of competitive players because it controls the center, opens lines for both the Queen and the Bishop, and usually leads to an open game, where pawn structures are less solid and more dynamic play occurs.

Under the King’s Pawn Opening umbrella, there are a variety of specific openings, each with its own strategies, tactics, and goals. These include:

  • The Italian Game
  • The Sicilian Defense
  • The French Defense
  • The Caro-Kann Defense
  • The Pirc Defense
  • The Alekhine Defense
  • The Scandinavian Defense
  • The Ruy-Lopez

Each of these specific openings can also have several variations. The choice of opening and variation can greatly influence the character of the following game, so players often choose their opening based on their preferred style of play and their preparation.

Table of Contents

King’s Pawn Opening (1.e4)

This is simply the move where White moves their King’s Pawn 2 spaces forward.

Each of these openings have numerous sub-variations and move orders, but the descriptions below should give you a solid starting point. It’s also worth noting that many openings are named after the players who popularized them or the region where they were first played.

Italian Game

This sequence of moves is characterized by the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4, where White and Black aim to control the center quickly with their pawns and then deploy their knights.

Two Knights Defense

This is a variation of the Italian Game, characterized by 3…Nf6, where Black aims to attack White’s central e4 pawn.

Giuoco Piano

Another variation of the Italian Game, it’s characterized by 3…Bc5, where Black’s goal is to put the bishop on its most dangerous square.

Sicilian Defense

This defense is initiated with 1.e4 c5. It’s known for creating asymmetrical positions.

Open Sicilian

This illustrates the Open Sicilian where White opens the center with 2.Nf3 and 3.d4, after which Black generally captures the d4 pawn with the c5 pawn. Afterwards, White recaptures the pawn with the knight, arriving at the position illustrated by this PGN.

The second move for Black can vary widely (2…d6, 2…Nc6, 2…e6, etc.), but 2…d6 is one of the most common responses, preparing to support the center pawn at e5. This represents just one possibility in the complex and rich body of opening theory that is the Open Sicilian.

Closed Sicilian

The Closed Sicilian, also known as the Closed Variation of the Sicilian Defense, is characterized by the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 and 3.g3. After the common opening moves, White often follows a general plan of developing their knight to c3, moving their pawn to g3, fianchettoing their bishop, and then castling. The exact move order can vary, and Black’s responses also play a big role in how the game develops.

Do note that the moves for Black are not shown in this as it’s generally White’s moves that define the opening. But Black’s response to 1.e4 c5 can widely vary, for instance, 2…Nc6, 2…d6, 2…e6, and so on. This indicates the general direction of the Closed Sicilian.

Najdorf Variation

The Najdorf Variation begins with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6. The a6 move is a flexible response by Black that prepares to expand on the queenside and keeps options open for pawn structures. The Najdorf Variation is one of the most popular lines of the Sicilian Defense and has been played by many world champions.

Scheveningen Variation

The Scheveningen Variation begins with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 5.Nc3 d6. Here, Black allows White to establish a central pawn duo (e4 and d4) while developing the knight and setting up a flexible pawn structure for Black. It’s named after a Dutch seaside town where an important early tournament featuring this system was held.

Dragon Variation

The Dragon Variation begins with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6. This line is known for its sharp, tactical play and the unique pawn structure, which somewhat resembles the shape of a dragon. The Dragon Variation is very tactical, requiring precise play from both sides.

Classical Variation

The Classical Variation begins with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6. Black aims to control the center and prepare for a potential d5 pawn break. The Classical Variation is not as sharp as some other Sicilian lines, but it still offers dynamic play with chances for both sides.

French Defense

The French Defense is a chess opening characterized by the moves 1.e4 e6. Black’s idea is to let White occupy the center with d2-d4, which can then potentially be attacked and undermined. This opening leads to closed positions and complex pawn structures, so a good understanding of pawn structures and positional play is useful.

The Classical Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6) is one of the oldest and most respected lines against the French Defense. Black immediately challenges White’s pawn on e4 and looks to exchange in the center of the board.

Winawer Variation

The Winawer Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4) is a very sharp line in the French Defense. By pinning the knight on c3, Black puts immediate pressure on White’s center and makes it more difficult for White to maintain their pawn on e4.

Tarrasch Variation

The Tarrasch Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2) aims to support the pawn on e4 without blocking in the c1-bishop. The game can become very complex if Black tries to exploit the slightly awkward placement of the knight on d2.

Caro-Kann Defense

The Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6) is a sturdy, reliable defensive setup for Black. Rather than engaging it head-on, it aims to undermine White’s center from the sides. Its main idea is to challenge the e4 pawn with 2…d5 on the next move.

The Classical Variation begins with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5. It’s called the “Classical Variation” because it was the main line of the Caro-Kann for many years. In this line, Black allows White to establish a strong pawn center with pawns on e4 and d4, but then immediately challenges the center with 1…c6 and 2…d5. The Classical Variation is known for being solid and tough to crack, but it can also lead to very sharp play.

Advanced Variation

The Advanced Variation begins with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5. In this line, White seeks to gain space in the center by advancing the e-pawn, challenging Black to find a successful plan of counterattack. The Advanced Variation can lead to complex positions where White has more space, but Black has counterplay.

Exchange Variation

The Exchange Variation begins with 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5. In this variation, White chooses to immediately exchange on d5, simplifying the position. The Exchange Variation is seen as a less ambitious choice by White, often leading to symmetrical pawn structures. However, it’s straightforward and less risky than other lines, making it a popular choice at the club level.

Pirc Defense

The Pirc Defense (1.e4 d6) is a hypermodern opening, meaning that it doesn’t try to control the center early on with its pawns. Instead, it focuses on letting the opponent occupy the center, then attempts to undermine it.

Alekhine Defense

The Alekhine Defense (1.e4 Nf6) is another hypermodern opening where Black tempts White to overextend their position in an attempt to later undermine it.

Scandinavian Defense

or Center Counter Defense

The Scandinavian Defense is characterized by 1.e4 d5. Black immediately challenges White’s control of the center.

Spanish Game

The Ruy-Lopez is a classic opening characterized by the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. It’s one of the oldest and most classic of all openings, aiming to put pressure on the center and prepare for castling to safety.

The Strategic Depth of the King’s Pawn Opening

Chess is a game of infinite complexities and the King’s Pawn Opening (1.e4) is the gateway to a universe of strategic battles and intellectual artistry. Renowned for its aggressive nature, this opening has been a favorite of many chess legends, including Bobby Fischer, who praised its straightforward yet potent approach to central control and piece development.

Table of Contents

Why Choose the King’s Pawn Opening?

  • The Advantages of 1.e4

The King’s Pawn Opening is not just a move; it’s a statement. It’s about seizing the center, freeing two major pieces (the queen and the f1-bishop), and preparing for a swift and energetic engagement. Unlike the more methodical Queen’s Pawn openings, 1.e4 is for the player who relishes sharp lines and direct conflict.

Dissecting the Main Lines

Each variation stemming from the King’s Pawn Opening offers a universe of study and an opportunity to specialize in a style that suits the player’s individual preferences.

The Diverse Avenues of 1.e4

  • Sicilian Defense (1…c5)

The Sicilian Defense is the ultimate challenge to 1.e4, aiming for a dynamic and asymmetrical balance of power. It invites complex positions and a battle for control that stretches across the entire board;

  • Ruy Lopez (1…e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5)

This classical opening is a testament to chess’s enduring principles—center control, piece development, and king safety. It offers a rich tapestry of positional play and tactical fireworks;

  • Italian Game (1…e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4)

Simplicity and aggression go hand in hand in the Italian Game, where the bishop’s early sortie puts direct pressure on Black’s central e5 pawn and tests their defensive capabilities;

  • King’s Gambit (1…e5 2.f4)

A call to the romantic era of chess, where swift attacks and daring sacrifices were the norm. The King’s Gambit is for the adventurous spirit who seeks a decisive advantage early in the game;

  • Vienna Game (1…e5 2.Nc3)

A flexible opening can lead to both tactical melee and strategic endgames, depending on the subsequent moves and variations chosen.

The Sicilian Defense and Its Branches

  • Examining the Sicilian Dragon Variation. The Dragon Variation is one of the most thematic and strategic lines in the Sicilian Defense. It features a hypermodern approach where Black fianchettoes their bishop, aiming for long-term control of the central and queenside squares;
  • The Tactical Arena of the Sicilian Najdorf. The Najdorf is a testament to the complexity of chess tactics. With 5…a6, Black prepares to expand on the queenside while keeping options open for a kingside attack or a strategic middlegame;

White sacrifices a pawn and follows up with another, opening lines on the queenside. White basically aims for a Benko gambit type queenside play for the pawn. This line is very less explored, and still, there is a lot to be revealed.

Openings after 1…e5:

For a long time in chess history , 1.e4 e5 was by far the most common way for a chess game to begin. 1….e5 is the reply which is usually taught to beginners because the ideas are easy to learn. By pushing the pawn to e5, black gains the same amount of space as that of white so he cannot be worse!

2. The Ruy Lopez:

The Ruy Lopez or the Spanish Opening is the most popular King’s pawn opening and is played from club level to World Championship matches. There are many other possible 3 rd moves for black such as Bird’s defence (3..Nd4), and Steinitz defence (3…d6) which are not popular today.

Main lines after 3….a6:

The exchange variation:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6

king's pawn yacht

This is the starting position of the exchange variation championed by Bobby Fischer. By doubling the pawns, white wants to go to an endgame and use his kingside pawn majority.

Steinitz defence deferred:

This variation arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 d6

king's pawn yacht

Here white has the aggressive 5.Bxc6+, the flexible 5.0-0 and the popular 5.c3. White is supposed to have a small advantage in all the lines.

The Arkhangelsk variation:

This is a very aggressive line for black and arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 b5 6.Bb3 Bc5

king's pawn yacht

It is one of the best ways for black to fight for an advantage early on because the line is very theoretical. Fabiano Caruana often plays it at the top level.

Spanish Open defence:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4

king's pawn yacht

Now we enter the territory of the Spanish closed structure. The d3 Spanish is very flexible and is very popular at the top level currently. However, with accurate play black should be equal in all the lines.

6. Spanish Marshall attack:

This is another very aggressive line for black which arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Bel 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5 c6

king's pawn yacht

Black sacrifices a pawn to get attacking chances on the kingside so that white’s queenside pieces remain out of play for a long time.

The main line runs 12.d4 Bd6 13.Re1 Qh4 14.g3 Qh3 15.Be3 Bg4 16.Qd3 Rae8 17.Nd2 Re6

7.Spanish Anti-Marshall varfiation:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0

To avoid the Marshall variation here, white players play 8.a4

king's pawn yacht

Here black has moves like 8…Bb7 and b4.

8. Spanish closed Zaitsev variation:

The move order of this variation is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Bel 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 0-0 9.h3 Bb7

king's pawn yacht

This variation is a firm favourite of World Champion Anatoly Karpov. It has a lot of theory, and both sides have to be very much prepared before playing this line.

9. Spanish closed Breyer variation:

It arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 0-0 9.h3 Nb8

king's pawn yacht

Here black argues that his night was misplaced on c6 so he decides to reroute it to d7 where it can find greener pastures. Again, this line is very theoretical, and at times the theory goes up to moved 30!

The mainline runs 10.d4 Nbd7 11.Nbd2 Bb7 12.Bc2 Re8

With accurate play, black should be equal.

10. Spanish closed Chigorin variation:

This line arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 0-0 9.h3 Na5 10.Bc2 c5

king's pawn yacht

Black plays …Qc7 and tries to create threats on the c file. White on the other hand generally focuses on the kingside and argues that black’s night is misplaced on a5.

3. Italian opening:

This opening is also known as Gioco Piano. It starts after the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4

king's pawn yacht

This is one of the oldest openings. It is very common at the top level nowadays. 3….Bc5 and 3…Nf6 are the two main moves.

After 3…Bc5 4.c3, 4.b4, 4.0-0 are some moves.

After 3…Nf6 4.Ng5 is the Max Lange Attack.

4. King’s Gambit

The King’s gambit starts with 1.e4 e5 2.f4

king's pawn yacht

White offers a pawn to open lines and divert the e pawn. This is a very sharp line, and both players should be well prepared. The mainline runs 3.Nf3 g5, this is black’s most ambitious response. Black simply accepts the sacrificed pawn and reinforces it with …..g5.

5. Vienna  Game

This opening starts after 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3

king's pawn yacht

White’s second move is less common than 2.Nf3. The original idea of this opening was to play a delayed King’s gambit with f4 (the Vienna Gambit), but in modern practice White often plays more quietly, especially fianchettoing his King’s bishop with g3 and  Bg2.

6. The Petroff defence

This opening starts after the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

king's pawn yacht

This is a very drawish opening and is referred to as “dull”. The structure remains rather symmetrical with only one file in between. White can play 3.Nxe5 and 3.d4.

Other defences apart from 1….e5 and 1….c5 which are less common:

7. Caro Kann defence

The Caro Kann defence starts with the moves 1.e4 c6 . The only difference between the French and the Caro Kann is that in the  French the c8 bishop stays inside the pawn chain. But in the Caro Kann, the c8 bishop goes out of the pawn chain very early.

king's pawn yacht

The Caro Kann is a very solid opening for black. It often leads to good endgames for Black, who has the better pawn structure.

8. Alekhine defence

This opening arises after 1.e4 Nf6 . It is another opening which issues an immediate challenge to White’s e4 pawn.

king's pawn yacht

Black lures White’s pawns forward in the hope of then proving them weak, but most players believe that White is too much space.

9. Scandinavian defence

After 1.e4 d5 , Black opens lines after for his pieces, enabling him to develop quickly. The price black pays is a loss of time.

king's pawn yacht

Black can also play 2…Nf6 which entails more risk, as White has some ambitious ways to hold onto his extra pawn.

10. Pirc/Modern defence

The Modern defence, 1.e4 g6 and the Pirc defence 1.e4 d6 are two closely related openings based around the fianchetto of Black’s dark-squared bishop. In both cases, Black allows white to form a broad pawn centre to undermine it later.

king's pawn yacht

These openings may appear passive, but blacks’ lack of space may be deceptive; if white does not take care, they can pack a counter attacking-attacking punch.

11. Owen’s defence

It is an uncommon chess opening defined by the moves 1.e4 b6 .

king's pawn yacht

By playing 1….b6 black prepares to fianchetto the queen’s bishop where it will participate in the battle for the centre. The downside of this plan is that white can occupy the centre with their pawns and gain a spatial advantage.

12. Nimzowitsch Defence

This defence starts with 1.e4 Nc6! This opening is an example of a hypermodern chess opening in which Black invites White to occupy the centre at an early stage with pawns and plans to undermine it later.

king's pawn yacht

If you are an aggressive player and want to attack your opponent always, you must play 1.e4. Study games of Garry Kasparov and Bobby Fischer who chose this move always and achieved great success.

Six Metre 2023 World Championship set for RYS, Cowes

6M Training Cowes

Royal Yacht Squadron prepares to host International Six Metre 2023 World Championship.

Preparations are in full swing to welcome 34 teams representing 11 Nations from across Europe and North America for the International Six Metre World Championship, to be hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron from 29 August to 8 September.

The fleet is divided into two divisions, the Open Division and the Classic Division for those yachts built prior to 31 December 1965.

Boats have been arriving in Cowes over recent weeks to train on the Solent, and registration for the regatta begin on Tuesday 29 August.

The official practice races will be held from on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 September and then on Sunday 3 September the class will hold its AGM and a Race Officer’s briefing.

World Championship racing will commence on Monday 4 September with up to eight races scheduled between then and the regatta’s conclusion on Friday 8 September.

Amongst those competing will be the defending Open and Classic Division Champions, Momo and Dix Août.

6 Metre FIN81 Cowes at Cowes

In the Open Division Dieter Schoen’s Momo, a Judel/Vrolijk design launched in 2022, will be aiming for a second consecutive win.

But she will have tough competition from the likes of Jan Eckert’s Gingko Too, a 2020 Javier Cela design; Violeta Alvarez’ 2017 Juan Kouyoumdjian designed Stella; and new kid on the block Oiva, designed by Allan Savolainen, launched in 2022 and owned by Finland’s Henrik Andersin.

The Open Division may be nicknamed the “Moderns”, but even here the boats will span some forty years. Built in 1981 the Petterson/Howlett designed Junior may be the oldest boat in the Open Division but she’s arguably the most successful post-1965 boat having won the Worlds in 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019 and the Europeans in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.

In the classic division Dix Août, a 1950 Bjarne Aas design owned by Louis Heckly, will defend her title, but this time with the legendary French offshore and Dragon sailor Géry Trenteseaux at the helm.

Meanwhile Louis, who is also the President of the International Six Metre Class, will be racing the stunningly beautiful 1937 Olin Stephens designed Fun. The two boats have been training hard all season and will both be hoping to put in a good showing.

The oldest boat racing in the Classic Division will be the 1927 Johan Anker designed Sioma owned by Fenton Burgin, closely followed by Tom Owen and Dirk Stolp’s 1930 Alfred Mylne designed Valdai and Simon J. William’s 1931 Anker & Jensen designed Abu.

The youngest Classic racing will be Thomas Kuhmann’s 1955 Hanko III designed by Bjarne Aas, although Nirvana, which is a reconstruction of a 1939 Olin Stephens design, is technically the most recently built of the Classics at this event.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PROTOCOL AND CLASS RULE OF THE 37TH AMERICA’S CUP

37th Americaâ??s Cup Protocol and Class Rule Announcement

Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

The Protocol of the 37th America’s Cup was released today by the Defender, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd and their representative team INEOS Britannia, eight months to the day after Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the America’s Cup.

The Protocol sets the foundations and rules of participation for all teams in the 37th America’s Cup and records the items of mutual consent under the America’s Cup Deed of Gift agreed between the Defender and the Challenger of Record which establishes the basis for a multi challenger event.

Defender Emirates Team New Zealand’s CEO Grant Dalton said: “As we saw with AC36, after 170 years, as the oldest trophy in international sport, the America’s Cup maintains its unique position of balancing the traditions of the Deed of Gift while continuing to push the boundaries of innovation, technology and design in the boats, the event, the broadcast and the commercial aspects of the event.

Maintaining this balance is the ongoing challenge and responsibility of the Defender and Challenger of Record as we aim to progress into the 37th edition of the America’s Cup in the ever-changing environment and demands of global sports as well as a determination to drive sustainability through innovation via hydrogen technology for the marine sector which we both believe is reflected in this Protocol.”

INEOS Britannia CEO and Team Principal Sir Ben Ainslie said: “As Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia has sought with the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, to make the next America’s Cup less expensive and more inclusive. The Protocol this time around will see reduced team operating costs without compromising any of the technical development which the Cup is so famous for. There is an opportunity for change, so for AC37 we will see the first Women’s America’s Cup Regatta and we also welcome back the Youth America’s Cup.”

An updated ‘Version 2’ of the AC75 Class Rule has been released from the last America’s Cup which specifies the latest requirements to be compliant with the class rule including modification requirements for new teams buying ‘Version 1 AC75’s’ that were built and used by teams competing in AC36.

royal yacht squadron events

Cost reduction has been a key consideration as part of the balance in the development of the AC37 Protocol including:

• Teams are only permitted to build one new AC75. • Limitations on the quantity of foils and componentry that can be built for the AC75’s. • Introduction of the multipurpose One Design AC40 class which teams will be able to convert and use for testing, component development and Match Race training. • AC40 class will then be converted back to the measured One Design AC40 class for use in the exciting new America’s Cup Women’s Regatta and America’s Cup Youth events. These events have been developed to create new accelerated inclusive pathways into the America’s Cup for the growing global talent pool of female and youth sailors. • Race crew onboard the AC75 reduced from 11 to 8 sailors. • Further One design elements. • Shared team recon. • Supplied starting software. • The AC75 class of boat will be maintained for the next two events.

The shared recon programme whilst reducing costs, is also aimed to give America’s Cup fans the inside track on the testing and development on the water by all the teams. The observations will be made public via AC media channels so that fans can stay up to date with the latest developments as they emerge from the sheds throughout the whole of AC37.

With a view to opening the doors and the continued drive to increase the global audience of the America’s Cup and the sport of sailing, a condition of entry to competitors is they agree to be part of a potential behind-the-scenes documentary series. The intention of this is to bring the secrecy, the drama and all the teams’ personalities into the limelight.

There will be up to three Preliminary Regattas, the first two raced in AC40s, the last one at the Match venue in AC75s. The Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup Match will be held in 2024, with the Match Venue and approximate event dates to be announced by 31st March 2022.

royal yacht squadron events

The Protocol outlines restrictions on when the AC75’s can be sailed. With the anticipated benefit angled towards new Challengers to AC37, existing teams are not permitted to sail their AC75s’ before the 17th September 2022, however new Challengers entering AC37 that have purchased a second hand “Version 1 AC75” are permitted to sail their AC75 for 20 days from 17th June 2022. There are other restricted sailing periods which are provisional and will be confirmed once the Match venue is announced.

The Crew Nationality Rule will require 100% of the race crew for each competitor to either be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club as of 17th March 2021 or to have been physically present in that country (or, acting on behalf of such yacht club in Auckland, the venue of the AC36 Events) for 18 months of the previous three years prior to 17th March 2021. As an exception to this requirement, there will be a discretionary provision allowing a quota of non-nationals on the race crew for competitors from ‘Emerging Nations.’

As part of the ongoing drive for innovation and new clean technology in the America’s Cup, it is now a mandated obligation of all teams to build and operate two hydrogen powered foiling chase boats for their campaign (subject to proof of concept). It’s hoped showcasing proven hydrogen technology in the marine sector will help create a game-changing pathway for the wider industry and lead to a significant reduction in its carbon footprint. These boats must be a minimum of 10 metres long and the usage and performance criteria is set out in the Protocol.

“A significant proportion of the team’s carbon footprints is in their on-water operations, through their long days of testing, development and training,” said Grant Dalton.

royal yacht squadron events

“So for the past year we have been researching, designing and are now building a prototype hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat which will have a dramatic effect on the reduction of the team’s carbon footprints, as well as pushing the development of hydrogen in the marine sector.”

Race Management will be entirely independent of the event organisation and will be led by the Regatta Director. The umpires and jury that will manage all on the water rules and disputes for all events.

• The independent Rules and Measurement Committees will be responsible for interpretation of the AC75 Class Rule and the yacht measurement.

• A three-person Arbitration Panel will oversee and deal with all Protocol disputes with published decisions to maintain the integrity of the event. And there will be a new fast-track process to reduce the potential delays in making decisions on disputed items.

AARON YOUNG: Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

“ A lot of work has gone into the AC37 Protocol and we extend our thanks and gratitude to Emirates Team New Zealand and the Challenger of Record - the Royal Yacht Squadron and INEOS Britannia - for their hard work and commitment to an exciting 37th America’s Cup.

Clearly the 36th America’s Cup was hugely successful despite the difficulties and huge restrictions due to dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic in New Zealand and globally. But as custodians of the America’s Cup along with Emirates Team New Zealand, it is our responsibility to keep building the event for the good of the America’s Cup, and the sport.

We especially welcome the inclusion of both the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup as part of the protocol and event, and believe these are important developments that will increase participation and inclusion within the America’s Cup going forward. We are also pleased to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation, technology, sustainability, participation, broadcast and the commercial aspects of the event. And so we think we have taken a good step forward in that respect.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will continue to support Team New Zealand as they fulfil their role in the planning, funding and delivery of this AC37 campaign and event.“

ROBERT M. BICKET: Chairman of Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd

“We are delighted with the result of this positive collaboration between the Defender and the Challenger of Record which has resulted in a truly progressive protocol for the 37th America’s Cup designed to promote fair competition and sustainability. Furthermore, we believe that the cost reduction measures and introduction of a women’s and youth event provide new and exciting opportunities within our sport.“

Inside the Castle

The interior of the Castle is a cross between a grand country house and a maritime museum. I wish I could have stayed for days to study the paintings of Fleet Reviews throughout history, pore over the leather-bound tomes in the library and sit with a gin and tonic taking in the glorious views across the Solent.

Instead I caught glimpses of treasures and trophies taken down from the walls for the refurbishment and got a feel for the magnificent proportions of the ancient rooms, the splendour of the Platform, with its battery of brass cannon, imagining the Scottish reels danced there a few days before – this vast room hosts parties and dinners for up to 120.

The magnificemt Dining Room where members can host their own dinner parties

The magnificemt Dining Room where members can host their own dinner parties

In pride of place is the enormous wheel from the yacht Victoria and Albert II , and over an arched doorway I spied the tiller from the royal racing yacht Bloodhound whose mast was once the Castle’s flagstaff – it was taken down for checking in 2014 and found to be past economic repair.

Members and their guests staying in the Castle in one of the 13 bedrooms, charmingly decorated in traditional style with chintz curtains and antique furniture, are treated to service every bit as good as in a five-star hotel. The commodore’s room is on the top floor. Both he and the vice-commodore have their own accommodation with ensuites.

The staff of stewards, waiters and waitresses is being augmented for the summer of 2015. They expect to be fully stretched serving drinks receptions and members’ dinners.

“And we’ll still provide normal service for members who like to come in to sit in the Morning Room or on the balcony in need of a whisky or a Martini and lemonade,” house manager Katie Waite told me. The Morning Room is Waite’s favourite part of the Castle. “It’s the most beautiful of them all,” she said.

Bells to summon the staff

Bells to summon the staff

Stewards, dressed in three-piece suits, offer a butler service and are at members’ beck and call 24 hours a day. Their ethos is to be “attentive, but not intrusive,” one steward told me.

One benefit of membership is the ability to book a room for a dinner, a party or wedding, entertaining your guests to superb food and drink. You can even book the entire Castle, effectively having your own country home for a day or two. If more than one member wants a room on the same date the complex hierarchy of membership comes into play and it goes to the senior member.

In the cavernous, old-fashioned basement kitchen, reminding me of a scene from Upstairs Downstairs , scores of jars of freshly made marmalade were cooling.

“All the food is made here fresh, from scratch, by the chefs,” the steward told me, “from bread, to jams and chutneys. We serve locally sourced meat and a lot of game in season.” They still do silver service if members request it, but most dishes are now in the new style, plated up artistically.

Wine cellar

Crouching slightly, we made our way into the wine cellars. In the first room for ‘high volume wines’, I noticed cases and cases of Sauternes ordered in for the bicentenary. The wines are chosen by the Squadron’s Wine Committee, some ready to drink, others bought en primeur to be kept until ready for drinking. The all-important port cellar is further down, in the deepest, coldest part of the building. Back up in the pantry, staff were polishing silver cutlery, which will no doubt be a Sisyphean task during the summer.

The Squadron boasts an excellent wine cellar

The Squadron boasts an excellent wine cellar

Is the club concerned that its traditional image may not appeal to potential younger members? I asked the commodore. He replied that the Squadron runs a racing programme every April for youngsters aged between 16 and 20 in J/109s and there’s a busy J/70 team-racing schedule for around 80 Squadron Sailing Associates up to the age of 35.

Commodore Sharples is himself a keen sailor. “I started sailing on a SCOD with my father, and then on an Excalibur 36,” he told me. “We did plenty of RORC racing and Cowes Week every year.” Aged 24, he took a sabbatical and set sail as skipper with three friends and his brother for Cape Town in a Gallant 53 in order to do the 1973 Cape to Rio Race. Since then he’s competed in more than 40 Cowes Weeks, Fastnets, Newport-Bermudas and Swan Worlds.

He said it was “a great privilege” to be commodore in the Squadron’s bicentenary year: “We have been planning for nearly two years so we are hopeful our events will be well-run and a great success, and everybody will have a good time.”

Behind the America’s Cup

Sharples will still be commodore in 2017, America’s Cup year, and says it’s “serendipity” for him that the competition will be in Bermuda. He has long-standing associations with the island, even keeping a J/80 there for racing, and visits as often as he can.

Obviously enthusiastic about the Squadron’s America’s Cup chances, he told me: “Our challenge, through our affiliated club – Royal Yacht Squadron Racing Ltd – with Ben Ainslie Racing as our team, is a tremendous opportunity for us to play our part in bringing the Cup back to Britain . . . We believe our member Sir Ben Ainslie has the best chance for a long time of winning the Cup. Our role, and mine as commodore, is to give Sir Ben all the support that we can.”

One of the cannon on the Platform

One of the cannon on the Platform

So the Squadron remains an enigma: a private members’ club still functioning with centuries-old traditions, yet a public-facing, dynamic organisation in the forefront of world racing. It has a reputation for being a bastion of high society, yet the members I know are not titled – one a surgeon, another in the arts.

July 2015 looks set to be a great celebration of this and all that’s unique about this 200-year-old club, which is changing with the times while not compromising its standards and its history.

The Bicentenary International Regatta

The Royal Yacht Squadron will be 200 years old on 1 June this year and in celebration the club has invited members of 25 clubs around the world for a week of racing from 25-31 July, in boats of all sizes from J/70 sportsboats to at least three of the mighty J Class classics .

A number of the bigger boats will arrive from Newport, USA, at the end of the Transatlantic Race 2015 , organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron in conjunction with the New York YC, the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Storm Trysail Club as part of the celebrations.

The three J Class yachts confirmed to date are Lionheart , Ranger and Velsheda . Velsheda was built by Camper & Nicholsons in the 1930s and a couple of decades ago was a regular sight on the Solent as a day charter boat.

Royal Yacht Squadron

Ranger was an aristocrat of a boat, owned by Harold Vanderbilt and winner of 32 of the 34 races she ever sailed, successfully defending the America’s Cup in 1937. She was eventually scrapped and the new Ranger is a faithful replica.

Lionheart is a new J built to a similar set of plans to Ranger from the archives of designers Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens. She made her mark in J racing winning the Kings 100 Guineas Cup in Cowes in 2012. The appearance of the J Class at the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary International Regatta will be a rare treat for Solent spectators.

The week of racing promises to be a lively set of events, including fleet racing under IRC and level rating plus team racing for younger sailors. Members of the 25 invited clubs who can’t get their own boats to Cowes will still be able to compete thanks to the entire fleet of Sunsail Farr 40s being made available for charter, offering closely matched racing.

The highlight of the week is likely to be the Race Around the Island. Ashore, the social programme features parties and gatherings at the Castle and other special venues, culminating in a Grand Party at Osborne House on 30 July.

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Eastward HO 24

Eastward HO 24 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Walter McInnis and built by C. E. Ryder starting in 1975.

Drawing of Eastward HO 24

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally designed for wood contruction. The hulls of the later, FG version were built by CE Ryder (USA) and finished by Portsmouth Yacht Co. Diesel power was available as an option.
