THE VIEW FROM: LARCHMONT YACHT CLUB; The Men Who Go Down to the Sea, and Start Cleaning Up

THE ''Knights of the Round Table'' are at it again. Nailing, hammering, scraping, doing all those things that come with spring cleanup. Down by the water, demolishing old docks, building new ones, they work as vigorously as if they were being paid great sums for their efforts.

The Knights are an unofficial group of 20 or so men who belong to Larchmont Yacht Club. The Round Table - which in recent years has expanded to an oval and a rectangle pushed together - is in the Victorian clubhouse, where the men gather on Saturdays and Wednesdays for lunch. They laugh, joke, swap boating stories - and then they go down toward the water and help the paid maintenance crew get things ready for the coming season.

'It's a Challenge'

''The trouble with an older club is you never stop working,'' Vincent Monte-Sano, former commodore, club historian and retired clothing designer, complained cheerfully one recent afternoon. ''Everybody volunteers - not just the guys from the Round Table.'' John Herbert Norwood (Woody) Wheeler is a currency trader by profession and sailor and chairman of the marine facilities committee of the club by avocation. ''It's a challenge trying to get everything done on time,'' he said. ''The launches, the ramps - this time of year, it starts to be a pressure cooker around here.''

The club has the kind of history members like to talk about. In one piece of club literature, Mr. Monte-Sano writes:

''The tradition is that Larchmont Yacht Club owes its origin to the fact that on one muggy Sunday morning in June 1880, a half-dozen young men of Larchmont Manor disturbed a religious service being held in a boathouse in Manor Park. Prayers Are Disturbed

''The young men had grown hot and tired working on their small sailing boats. Their intention was to swim and then take a nap in the boathouse. However, the young men forgot that on Sunday mornings some ladies of the manor held services in the boatouse. Thus they were charged with disturbing the fair worshippers in their prayers.

''Chagrined, they retired to a nearby rock and discussed the situation. They decided to form a men's yacht club. However, it was made clear that the Union Church and the ladies were to use the boathouse on Sunday mornings, and on the other six-and-a-half days it was to be the clubhouse of the newly formed club.''

In 1887, membership growth necessitated the purchase of the present clubhouse, a stately Victorian mansion on 11 acres near the boathouse. The years 1900 through 1929 represented an age of opulence, of ''velvet swings, men in tails and top hats, caviar and Champagne sipped from ladies' slippers, and owning a 200-foot steam yacht was incidental,'' Mr. Monte-Sano writes.

A Prestigious Membership

J. P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie and three Vanderbilts were among the members; palatial schooners and steam yachts dotted the harbor.

The Depression changed all that. The well-to-do still flocked to the club, but the new members were also serious sailors who plied the waters in far smaller boats. They skippered and maintained them themselves, without benefit of servants. In 1936 the International Class racing sailboats were introduced, and other classes followed.

Throughout the years, activities and membership expanded. Women were admitted and so were young people; a junior clubhouse was built in 1952. There is also an unusual saltwater swimming pool - built so that it appears to be part of a natural inlet - and a small sandy beach. ''When I joined, there were two tennis courts and they were barely used,'' Mr. Monte-Sano recalled. ''Now there are seven tennis courts and four paddle-tennis courts.''

The emphasis, of course, is still on sailing. The club has 350 boats and 600 members; those who don't own craft crew for others. Cruising sailboats, which may be made from wood or fiberglass, remain popular: a model of the club's biggest, an 83-footer named Ondine, is mounted on a wall in the clubhouse dining room, with the inscription, ''First to Finish, Newport to Bermuda, July 21, 1974.''

Sleek Racing Craft

There are also sleek racing craft, these days mostly constructed of fiberglass, that compete in various classes: Shields, Etchells 22, Rhodes 19 and many others. From June through September, these boats race under the auspices of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound; different clubs along the Sound take turns as hosts of the events. Preseason racing, done on a less formal basis, takes place in May and October.

There is even racing all winter. Hearty sailors navigate 11-foot dinghies into the Sound, going against each other in as many as eight ''frostbite'' races in an afternoon, braving the biting wind of winter and early spring. It is, Mr. Monte-Sano said, ''some of the best racing around.''

But these activities - and the many sailing classes for all ages and levels of competence - come with a price tag of year-round hard work. A maintenance staff of dozens takes care of the grounds, the wood-paneled clubhouse and the 14 launches, 24 floats and three gangways, Mr. Wheeler said. But the Round Table group and other members augment this professional work with plenty of volunteer elbow grease.

On a recent day, for instance, a half-dozen were dismantling weathered old floats that had been severely damaged last fall by the county's brush with Hurricane Hugo. Seagulls circled about, dropping clamshells on the dock; the air was heavy with the smell of salt and aging wood.

''We took a lot of damage last year,'' said Charles Hoffmann, who owns a construction business, as he and Guy Deutermann, the owner of Mamaroneck Boats and Motors Marina and a new club member, operated an electric winch. The machinery groaned; up from the water came a decrepit float, its sides encrusted with barnacles. When it reached the dock, the men began breaking it into smaller pieces to dispose of it.

Meanwhile, Robert Redfern, a stockbroker; Thomas Haley, who works for the New York Stock Exchange; James Kennelley, an executive with an educational-materials company; David Treacy, a lawyer, and Mr. Wheeler were building new floats and gangways. They hammered nails into planks, debated what height railings should be, and sounded as enthusiastic and intense as if they were closing a major business deal.

Volunteers the 'Lifeblood'

''The lifeblood of a club is its volunteers,'' Mr. Haley said. ''The vitality of a club lies in its membership.'' Then there were the boats being readied for summer. Members keep their craft in many places during the off-season. Some keep them at the club on dollies covered with tarpaulin. There is even a dedicated group of racers who ''dry sail'' all summer - they hoist their boats out of the water each time they come in, rather than mooring them, in order to keep out any water that might slow them down.

Nor are the only vessels those with sails. Mr. Kennelley's 29-year-old son Mark, a financier, and a friend, Ilene Weininger, a lawyer, were preparing ''Lady K,'' a 34-foot powerboat, for her first voyage of the season. Mr. Kennelley conceded that their work was not all that arduous. It amounted to cleaning up some soda that had frozen and exploded in the galley.

For every mundane task, however, there are tales of the open sea. LeSeur (Bud) Smith Jr., a publisher, sat at the Round Table, reminiscing about a close call in the summer of 1984.

Fog Sets In

''I was coming back from Newport and pea soup fog set in,'' he said. ''I heard the blast of a tugboat. She came in. I saw this black thing. I screamed, 'She's going to hit.' In a matter of 10 seconds, she was on my headstay'' - a mast support.

''I stood there. Then I climbed down on my boom and onto the barge. I'm waving and shouting. The captain comes out and looks at me, and says, 'Where the hell did you come from?' '' Mr. Smith's boat was damaged but it didn't sink.

Attended two multi day Regattas at Larchmont. The staff were very respectful and helpful, even though they knew that I was not a member. I had an issue with a lost rain jacket and they had a very well designed lost and found system which resulted in the retrieval of my jacket. BTW is you need a high quality foul weather jacket, there are several that are unclaimed. Had numerous meals there from grab and go lunches, continental breakfasts and social dinner buffets. One day the coffee was so good, I thought they had put cocaine in it. The next day it had grounds. Stayed in Commodore suite for three days. The room was small with twin beds. The bathroom doors did not close. The view of Long Island Sound did compensate and I felt the price was fair for the location. My only complaint if continental breakfast was that hot pots should have been primed. They had a couple of different models and it took a minute to figure how to pump and then the next day my beverage of choice would be in a different style pot. Too early in morning to be doing trouble shooting in an un caffeinated state. They will not sell Larchmont Yacht Club branded merchandise to non members. That is their prerogative. I have plenty of LYC SWAG from regattas. The boat staff are very professional and respectful. Being in a regatta on LYC and American Yacht Club loaned boats, I was looking at every minor deficiency to win in One Design Racing. They were supportive where possible and within the Regatta sailing instructions.

Easy going Yacht club on the Long Island Sound. Interior is clapboard paneled and there are wood tables to have lunch at. Plenty of boat-themed paraphernalia hanging from walls. Staff quizzical: underage, they have no answers! Parking is tight. Magnificent views from front lawn over shimmering water. Rebel: 4

Classic, elegant yet beautiful overlooking the Long Island Sound. I attended a wedding reception held here nearly a decade ago with my former love and his family. The service is somewhat attentive as well as the food is catered. Sunday brunch wearing Gucci and Burberry bags with Manolo Blahnik shoes complete with Tiffany jewelry of men and women, which envisioning it is very common yet a staple to old money to this historic yacht club. The view is amazing as well as the surrounding houses. The lawn is always freshly cut and well maintained. This yacht club is historic as members obviously come from old money. There is an elephant shaped plant on their lawn that is picturesque. I rate it four stars as the service and food are not superb.

Attended a rehearsal dinner here recently. The building is gorgeous and very nicely inside...even the bathroom was beautiful! The cocktail hour was very nice with lots of appetizers being passed around and plenty of cheese, crackers, and drinks. The staff was friendly and attentive. The seated dinner was nice. I had the chicken francese which was really good and the portion sizes were great. I loved the view from the dining room and only wish we could have seen it during daytime so I could've gotten an even better view of the water!

Rude employees! The tennis courts and tennis shop were so disorganized. The manager of the tennis facilities did not accommodate me and my needs at all. Will not come back here again!

Classy, Elegant, and Breathtakingly beautiful! My boyfriend's company has a company/family picnic here once a year and this year I decided to attend his company picnic with him since I've never been to any of his company functions. This place is massive with lots of grass area for little kids to run around and others to take a nice stroll. There's a gorgeous view overlooking Long Island. The staff here are very friendly and kind. There was lots of of food - such as lobster with butter, pasta salad, burgers, hot dogs, salad, dessert, ice cream, and open bar. The lobster was so moist, tender, and just amazing! I had two for myself. The pasta salad we had was delish as well! I really enjoyed the picnic and it was nice to meet his colleagues and it was a nice escape from the city for a few hours. I look forward to his company function next year at Larchmont Yacht Club.

We had a luncheon there following my grandmother's funeral two days ago. My aunt and uncle are members there and it was a very nice, yet emotional time with my family. Honestly, I have no idea how much I can put in this review without losing it. This place is absolutely beautiful and has so much history. It's been around for over 200 years and this place IS old money. The staff was extraordinary and the food was quite pleasing. My mom has told me stories about how her proms were here. She is a real-life Lorelai Gilmore, rebelling against her debutante destiny and posh upbringing. Maybe I should fill in the fact that I'm adopted and that is how my connection to this place lies. Anyway, the view from the dining room is amazing. Overlooking the Long Island sound and just thinking of the really nice homes surrounding this place. I guess I really like it here. Quiet, peaceful and I'm sure that I would most likely get mistaken for staff here too. I left off the fifth star because even though I have a connection with this place...I will never be a member here. I'm too dark; too poor... don't mind me...I'm not myself right now...

This place is so classic and old school. Everyone has money oozing from their veins. Perfect place for Sunday brunch overlooking the water, wearing Lilly Pulitzer, and storing your expensive sailboat. I still give it 5 stars since it has a great history and sometimes it's the perfect place for traveling back in time. Also the "ladies' powder room" is nicer than my house.

LARCHMONT YACHT CLUB BECOMES NSHOF FOUNDING MEMBER

From the Commodore:

The Board of Trustees of the Larchmont Yacht Club voted to become a Founding Member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame in Annapolis, Maryland. Larchmont Yacht Club joins other prestigious yacht clubs in the United States in supporting the National Sailing Hall of Fame as it moves forward to construct new facilities in Annapolis, where it is destined to become "a home for the Sport of Sailing" in the United States.

Larchmont Yacht Club, founded in 1880, and located on Western Long Island Sound in Larchmont, New York, has a long and successful tradition of yachting and yacht racing, fostering generations of sailors who have and who continue to excel in sailing. Commodore Carl Olsson confirmed that “sailing and competitive racing at the Larchmont Yacht Club prevails as a way of life today as it did 131 years ago and the Club is proud to support the National Sailing Hall of Fame as a Founding Member in the spirit of that tradition.”

When the Larchmont Yacht Club was founded, in 1880, the United States had been a nation for 104 years. Its total population was 50 million. The Civil War had ended 14 years earlier.  The village of New Rochelle was settled in 1688; Mamaroneck, as part of Rye, had also long been existence; but in between these two, there was no Larchmont.

larchmont_yc-01

The story of the origin of the Larchmont Yacht Club has often been told. In the early evening of Memorial Day in the year 1880, five young men were warming themselves over a bonfire built in a cleft of rocks on the shore of what is now Horseshoe Harbor, in Larchmont Manor. These five loved boats and they had just finished a hard racing day. Since a bonfire is scarcely the most comfortable way to close a hard day at sea, it is not surprising that these young men fell to discussing the possibility of organizing a yacht club.  They were Frank L. Anthony, Fred W. Flint, William C. France, Loring Lothrop and Charles E. Jenkins.  Their boats were part of a small mixed fleet of jib and mainsail sandbaggers, sloops and cat boats moored in Horseshoe Harbor.

larchmont_yc-01

It was decided that evening to organize a yacht club to be called the Larchmont Yacht Club and to invite others to join.  The problem of a Clubhouse was resolved quickly.  Fred Flint was elected a committee of one to approach his father, T.J.S. Flint, who was President of the Larchmont Manor Company and owned most of the property in Larchmont Manor from the Post Road south to the shore line. On this property was the small Union Church. The young charter members made a deal with the elder Mr. Flint for the use of the church as a clubhouse and signed a lease for $1.00 per annum.  However, it was made clear that the newly formed Club would have use of the church every day except Sunday when the clubhouse would be opened to them only after church services were over.

larchmont_yc-02

The club membership grew so fast, however, that a larger clubhouse was soon needed, and in the fall of 1881 the club leased the Fleming residence near the church for the annual rental of $1,500 per year.  The club continued to expand so it became necessary in 1884, to lease the Shepard House.

Three years later, in 1887, the year of the incorporation of the Larchmont Yacht Club, the present site of eleven acres was purchased at a cost of $10,000 from Benjamin A. Carver, a railroad magnate.

larchmont_yc-01

The original Carver residence was much smaller than the present clubhouse – the east and west wings having been added subsequently to the purchase. The Pandemonium was built fifteen year later in 1902. Our present Junior Clubhouse was the Carver stable and the basement was the cow barn while the first floor housed the horses.

Thus, the origin of the Larchmont Yacht Club.

Larchmont Yacht Club

larchmont yacht club launch

Larchmont Yacht Club is the second-oldest yacht club in the United States. Conceived in 1880 on the cleft rocks of Larchmont Manor, the club has grown to a membership in excess of 600, with a continued mission to instill and enhance an interest in yachting and the spirit of sportsmanship in members and their families. Set within a mature forest of deciduous trees, the club is home to one of the largest competition and recreational swimming pools in the Northeast – more than 1.6 million gallons – captured by a seawall in what was once a natural cove. Unfortunately, this iconic pool fell victim to its own success, and could not be retrofitted to comply with current health codes.

SWA/Balsley was commissioned to envision a master plan that would improve the club’s operational capacity, allow for an expansion of its membership, and increase its revenues. The plan renews focus on the breathtaking views to the Horseshoe Harbor and Long Island Sound, raising the existing elevation more than seven feet. More than doubling the pool area’s capacity, the design also provides an expanded bi-level bar and grill; separate adult, child, and recreational facilities; and a waterfront promenade that encourages views out from the pool decks above. Circulation improvements and grade manipulation improve the property’s resilience in the face of sea level rise and storm surges, while reconstruction of the pool prevents harmful chemicals from leaching into the waters of the Long Island Sound.

A Brief History of Larchmont, New York

Old postcard of Station Plaza in Larchmont

Larchmont gained fame at first as a wealthy summer shoreline retreat. It has since evolved into a year-round suburb with vintage homes, grand estates, and cute neighborhoods. Bloomberg has ranked Larchmont as the 15th wealthiest neighborhood in the United States and the third wealthiest in New York.

1600s & 1700s

In 1614, the Dutch explored Larchmont, which was originally inhabited by the Siwanoy tribe. In 1661, John Richbell, a merchant from Hampshire, exchanged goods for land in the Town of Mamaroneck with the Siwanoy. Three peninsulas were purchased: Orienta, Larchmont Manor, and Davenport Neck. Great Britain took control in 1664, and Richbell received an English title in 1668. In 1675, he began encouraging settlement and leased his “Middle Neck” to his brother. The Palmer family obtained full title to the land, which included Larchmont, in 1722.

The “Manor House,” Larchmont’s oldest and most historic home, was built in 1797 by Peter Jay Munro. He was the nephew of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Munro was an abolitionist who helped found the New York State Manumission Society. He later joined Aaron Burr’s law firm and built the Manor House. Munro’s house faced the Boston Post Road, which was dusty in the summer. To counteract this, his gardener brought in fast-growing Scottish larch trees, which gave the village its name.

Establishment

In 1788, Mamaroneck, New York, was founded. In the 1890s, it was divided into three sections to meet growing demand for services. The residents of Larchmont Manor made their area a village in 1891. They expanded its boundaries beyond the Manor’s 288 acres. It included land to the north and south of the railroad and east to Weaver Street. This growth was required to comply with a law requiring a minimum of 300 people per square mile.

Summer resort (1800s)

Munro’s estate, which had previously been owned by his son Henry, was sold to Edward Knight Collins in 1845. After Collins declared bankruptcy, Thompson J.S. Flint purchased his estate and turned it into an inn and park. After 1872, the area became a popular summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers. By the 1900s, the New York & New Haven Railroad had replaced stagecoach and steamboat as modes of transportation. The change transformed Westchester County from farmland to suburbia.

Larchmont evolved from a resort community to a hub for wealthy individuals commuting to and from New York City. The area is still famous for its Victorian “cottages” and grand hotels that are now private residences, such as the Bevan House and Manor Inn.

From the Commodore:

The Board of Trustees of the Larchmont Yacht Club voted to become a Founding Member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame in Annapolis, Maryland. Larchmont Yacht Club joins other prestigious yacht clubs in the United States in supporting the National Sailing Hall of Fame as it moves forward to construct new facilities in Annapolis, where it is destined to become “a home for the Sport of Sailing” in the United States.
