FPB 83: Wind Horse

  • By Steve and Linda Dashew
  • Updated: August 5, 2010

It is 1930, Norwegian summer time. We are located at 79.35 north latitude, a little over 600 miles from the North Pole. Behind us lie the Svalbard Islands, midway between northern Norway and Greenland. Our goal is 80 degrees north and the Arctic ice pack. Right now this goal is very much in doubt.

Fog has reduced the visibility we need to find open leads in the ice. At present we can see at most a quarter of a mile. And an unforecast wind is starting to blow at right angles to our course from the west. Wind Horse , our FPB 83 motoryacht, is at idle, while we watch the weather and analyze the risk factors.

That you can get this close to the Pole is amazing. If we were in the Southern Hemisphere, we’d already be on the ice sheets of Antarctica at 65 degrees latitude. In Greenland, we’d have been stopped by pack ice hundreds of miles south, and Alaska’s Glacier Bay is 1,100 miles closer to the equator than our present position. But the west coasts of the Svalbard Islands are kissed with the remnants of the Gulf Stream, so this area is typically navigable—with a great deal of care—by the middle to the end of July.

Caution is the watchword. We are on our own. If there is a problem, we either sort it out ourselves, or suffer the consequences. There are no technicians to make service calls, nobody to rescue us if we set off the EPIRB. And if we make a mistake judging the weather, and become trapped by the ice pack, we are here, at best, until next summer.

Enveloped in the warm, dry cocoon of Wind Horse’s interior, surrounded by a tough metal hull with a double bottom, five watertight bulkheads, and 3/4-inch-thick windows, it is easy to lose touch with the reality of the far north. But we know the west wind can quickly close the open leads through which we have worked to arrive at this point.

Each July, 15 to 20 yachts make the 500-nautical-mile trip from northern Norway to the Svalbard Islands. Most are constructed of metal, and other than Wind Horse , all are sail. Permission to visit must be obtained well in advance. You apply to the Sysselmenn (governor) stating your experience, equipment, and desired itinerary. If approved, you then post a bond to pay for search-and-rescue costs, if you ask for help within SAR range.

Seeing a polar bear is one of our goals, and also a major risk of cruising these waters. Polar bears are at the top of the food chain, and typically eat seals, but are known to chow down on the occasional human, if hungry. As a result, a Norwegian requirement for going ashore is to be armed. Most cruisers rent .308 caliber World War II German Mauser rifles (ours is dated 1940). These are bolt action, fire one shot at a time; reliable, but slow. If you kill a bear you must prove you were at risk, the shooting must be done at close range, and you had better know what you are doing. Two shots, at most, is all you get once the bear starts to move toward you.

We normally cruise on our own, but because of the bear risks, and to help stand anchor watch for ice, we are joined aboard by our good friend Joe Kutschka. Joe is an experienced hunter, and a veteran of South Pacific as well as Alaskan cruises. Joe carries the Mauser ashore and the two of us carry bear spray, as well as flare pistols, the latter hopefully to discourage inquisitive behavior.

Without benefit of the Gulf Stream, the east coast of Svalbard is much cooler than the west. As a result, the sea ice that forms over winter is thicker, and takes longer to break up. When it does start to move, prevailing winds will often push the sea ice around the south end of Spitsbergen Island and into the southern fjords. Sea-ice incursion has been known to trap unwary yachts.

Fully protected anchorages don’t exist in this part of the world. Wind and current can bring the ice pack to visit if you are in the northern islands, or glacier and sea ice anywhere else. On two occasions, ice will chase us out of anchorages. Cruising here is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards make it worth the effort. Visiting Svalbard is a visual treat beyond almost anything else on the planet. Sixty percent of the islands are covered with ice and there are tidewater glaciers everywhere we look. There is a breathtaking contrast between the stark white of the ice, bare rock, blue sky, and dark water. Less than 14 inches of precipitation fall in an average year, making this a virtual desert. Between the glaciers, rock, and climate, just 10 percent of the land mass has any ground cover during the short summer.

And there is abundant wildlife. Millions of sea birds, whales, walrus, seals, fox, reindeer, and polar bear share their habitat with us.

European exploration of Svalbard began in the latter part of the 16th century with William Barents doing a bit of coastal cruising during 1596. Initially driven by the quest for a shorter route to the Indies, whaling and then fishing quickly became the draw. Seventeenth- through 19th-century explorers and whalers worked their way through the ice pack as far as 82 degrees north, under sail, without benefit of global warming or internal combustion engines. The 20th century brought coal mining to the islands. More recently, tourism has become the main economic thrust.

There is also a history of Arctic exploration, in particular the race to the North Pole. Names like Amundsen and Nansen are etched in the history of Svalbard. The dry Arctic climate is especially good at preserving remains and the islands abound with artifacts.

Now, a deck of low clouds hangs over us. There is ice pack to the west and northeast but it looks clear directly to the north. After 20 minutes—and a hearty meal of burritos, salad, and fruit—the fog has lifted enough to tempt us farther north.

The entire Polar ice pack is in constant motion, drifting with ocean currents and wind. The same is true of the open leads in the ice around the perimeter of the pack, which can change position with disconcerting swiftness.

2020, Position 79.49.2N Latitude 012.22.1E Longitude. Just 12.3 miles to go. The cloud ceiling has lifted to 2,000 feet and visibility has improved. But the west wind is increasing, now to 10 knots, and the ice leads ahead are less open. We need four hours to get to 80 degrees, and back to this point, allowing for a zigzag course in the leads. If the breeze builds much more we will have to turn back. But if it holds steady, we are probably okay.

Earlier this morning, we departed from Ny Alesund, a research village located at the sight of a former coal mine. Nine countries have facilities here to study polar phenomenon. During the summer, 200 hardy scientists call this home. There is a tiny harbor, partially protected by a small breakwater, into which Wind Horse barely fits. Ashore, there is a small store, museum, dormitories, a communal cafeteria, and research facilities. Ny Alesund also boasts the northernmost post office on the planet. This prosaic description, however, does not do justice to the ambiance.

Under a low, overcast sky and weak sunlight, a giant satellite dish and the remains of a coal mine combine to give the surroundings an otherworldly feel. This could easily be a remote outpost on the cold moon of a different planet. Walking into the log cabin bar, we half expect a scene from “Star Wars” to unfold.

Moving down the “main street” yields a different sensation. Think of Clint Eastwood’s film High Plains Drifter and you have the setting down cold. Replace rugged frontiersmen with scientists suited up and armed for survival (nobody takes the polar bears lightly) and the scene is complete.

Polar bears move with seals, which in turn follow the ice pack. As fjord ice melts and the polar pack heads north, this mammalian food chain retreats with the ice. Bears who miss the ice retreat are left to scavenge the islands, trying to subsist on birds’ eggs, the odd seal, or, if lucky (or unlucky depending on perspective) the occasional biped.

They are intelligent hunters who carefully stalk their prey, going so far as to cover their black noses with snow to hide from seals. They are also good climbers, often erupting from the sea to take seals on the ice edge. And they can run 20 miles per hour for short distances.

Due to the bears’ migratory pattern, yachts visiting Svalbard rarely see polar bears.

Ny Alesund is on one arm of a complex of fjords known as Kongsfjorden. The glaciers in Krossfjorden are active right now, and as the sun is shining, we carefully spring and warp our way out of Ny Alesund’s tiny harbor and head northwest. A couple of wondrous hours of sightseeing has us at the edge of the ice floes off Lilliehookbreen glacier. This is the perfect spot for a photo of the boat surrounded by ice with a giant glacier face in the background, and we prepare to launch the dinghy.

While we are releasing the lashings, Joe is scanning for wildlife with his 15-power binoculars. The launching halyard is being wound around the electric winch when Joe shouts “Polar bear! He’s swimming across the fjord, just off the port bow, 100 yards off.”

We grab cameras and observe Mr. Bear cross the fjord. He paddles at an easy three knots, faster than you could row an inflatable with a balky outboard. Had Joe not seen him, and had we launched the dinghy, one of us might not now be writing this story. Reaching the shoreline, the polar bear lunges up on the boulder-strewn beach, and leisurely proceeds up the steep mountain at a pace you could not duplicate running on flat ground. At the summit he pauses and looks over his shoulder at us as if to say “next time.”

We’ve been close up and personal with Alaskan grizzlies, shared coves with cavorting humpback whales, and watched 20-foot crocodiles swim past our anchored yacht, but nothing we’ve seen in the past compares to being in the same fjord as a polar bear.

Our next stop, Magdelena Fjord, boasts the closest thing to a fully protected anchorage Svalbard offers. There is a sandy hook forming a natural breakwater, with good holding in mud and sand. It was one of the favorite anchorages for whalers during the past 300 years. Numerous graves give evidence to how tough that life was. There are four tidewater glaciers in the vicinity, and the scenery is as spectacular as anything we have seen in a lifetime of cruising.

This is a government outpost. A cabin houses two rangers in the summer, an isolated, coveted position. The rangers come by to check our papers and we invite them aboard for a home-cooked meal.

Everywhere these two men travel they are prepared for the worst. From dry suits worn in the dinghy (the norm for everyone in small boats here) to rifles, high-powered pistols, and heavy-duty flare guns, it is evident they respect the king of the food chain. When we inquire about the chances of seeing a bear in Magdelena, they reply that they have not seen one all summer.

The next day dawns with brilliant blue skies and we take the dinghy ashore to explore. Arctic terns fly about our heads, daring us to try to find their nests. The black-and-white scenery is framed by dark blue sky and darker water. We step carefully, avoiding the tiny, beautiful flowers which eke out an existence during the short summer.

Our new friends, the rangers, are off counting reindeer (a subspecies of caribou) and we have Magdelena Fjord to ourselves. Joe is a little uncomfortable with the rocky terrain around the beach. He points out what good cover this would give a hungry polar bear, and we are a quarter of a mile from the dinghy. Even though there have been no sightings this summer, we head back.

Until 20 years ago, you were not allowed to carry firearms when ashore. Then a camper was taken from his tent right here in Magdelena, and eaten on the ice just off the beach, in full view of his helpless friends. The government changed their rules on self defense.

Two weeks after our visit, three yachts are in Magedelena. One of the crews is walking on shore. Another has climbed the mast for a photograph, and he suddenly yells to get the attention of the folks ashore. When they do not respond, his partner jumps into their dinghy and roars off to the beach. The photographer aloft has spotted a polar bear swimming ashore and all concerned beat a hasty retreat.

2124. Our Furuno GPS Says 80° 00.2’N. We’ve made it! The leads are still open, but the west wind has now increased to 15 knots, and though we’re tempted to push even closer, we are concerned that the ice behind us may close. Wind Horse has come within 598 miles of the North Pole and we feel on top of the world.

This Rugged Military-Style 83-Foot Explorer Yacht Can Cruise Nearly 10,000 Miles on a Single Tank

Ready to cast off, head off and explore the world? One of the most iconic explorer yachts ever built, the 83-foot Wind Horse could be yours for its next world-girding adventure.

Built in 2005 for long-distance sailors Steve and Linda Dashew, this quirky, pencil-thin, military-looking motoryacht covered over 60,000 miles in the seven years the Dashews owned it.

This Rule-Breaking 50-Foot Yacht Is What Would Happen if Salvador Dalí Designed a Boat

Top up the 2,600-gallon fuel tanks and, at 10 knots, it can cover 9,800 miles. That’s a third of the way around the globe without refueling. At the sweet-spot 12-knot cruise speed, it can run for an equally impressive 6,000 miles covering an easy 250 miles a day.

In one eight-month voyage in 2008, the Dashews cruised from Southern California, through the Panama Canal, north to Canada and then across to Greenland. And because they could, they carried on to England. That trip was almost 10,000 miles in total—compared to maybe 500 miles most yacht owners with a similar-sized vessel cruise each year.

On another voyage, the Dashews ventured farther north than they’d ever been on any of their sailboat adventures, ending up in remote Svalbard, between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

“We will always have a soft spot in our hearts for Wind Horse . She was truly our magic carpet ride,” says Steve Dashew who designed the yacht as the first-of-many, look-alike Dashew Offshore FPBs—short for Functional Power Boats.

Built from lightweight aluminum by Kelly Archer Boatbuilders in New Zealand, the yacht was designed to be capable of tackling the most extreme weather and roughest seas. Measuring 83 feet, but with a beam of just 19 feet, the hull is adept at slicing big waves.

And, remarkable for an 83-footer, the vessel is designed to be handled by just two people. In fact, most of the Dashews’ cruising was done with just the husband-and-wife team.

To reduce maintenance, Dashew left the exterior surfaces bare and unpainted, giving Wind Horse a love-it-or-hate-it, oxidized cinderblock-gray, appearance.

“The bare aluminum exterior with its military-commercial look, really opened doors that would have been closed to a typical shiny, in-your-face motoryacht,” he says.

To reduce the risk of flooding in a collision, the boat also has a double bottom and series of watertight bulkheads in the hull. And to increase stability in rocky seas, there are 6,500 lbs. of lead ballast encapsulated in the double-skin hull. Fitted, huge fin stabilizers also reduce roll.

Powering the yacht is a pair of near-indestructible, commercial-grade John Deere 150hp diesels that spin 32-inch-diameter propellers. They push the yacht to a top speed of 14 knots. The engines currently have around 7,000 hours.

Despite the minesweeper-like exterior, Wind Horse is surprisingly big on liveaboard comfort. The spacious salon, with its ring of 19mm-thick tempered glass windows, is lined with golden Burmese teak that took New Zealand craftsmen over 3,000 man-hours to finish to a high gloss.

The salon includes an open helm station—rather than a separate pilothouse—which does away with the traditional steering wheel in favor of joystick control. And, as a nod to the vessel’s extreme cruising ability, all of the seating, including the sofas and helm chair, come with seatbelts for use during passages.

Belowdecks is a spacious owners’ stateroom forward, with a king-sized bed and two ensuite guest cabins aft.

To ensure self-sufficiency on long voyages, the yacht carries almost 2,000 gallons of water, has a massive battery bank with no fewer than 15 high-capacity batteries, a 33-gallon-per-hour watermaker. The deck is designed to catch rain water.

Wind Horse , currently in Beaufort, North Carolina, is listed for $3.995 million with brokers Berthon International.

Stepping further forward and down a step, the galley is to port with the head to starboard. The engine access is just aft of the removable steps, allowing ease of access. The v-berth features storage drawers, shelves, cabinets, and two hanging lockers.

FPB 78, GREY WOLF II

Dashew Offshore, FPB 78 Built 2017 / US$6,500,000, ex. VAT

FPB 78, GREY WOLF II 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

FPB 78 #2 GREY WOLF II is an incredible explorer motor yacht, which we know well – having seen her take shape in the sheds at Circa Marine in New Zealand before commissioning in 2017. The first GREY WOLF was an FPB 64, purchased as the order for FPB 78#2 GREY WOLF II was signed, to give the owner some FPB experience. He took this task to its limits by making the long passage home to the Channel Islands from New Zealand in `little’ GREY WOLF. A very experienced yachtsman, his input is evident throughout GREY WOLF II with total focus on safety and endurance at sea.

GREY WOLF II is an astonishing explorer motor yacht designed by Dashew Offshore for serious passage making and she represents the very best of the qualities required for sustained operations in the harsh but beautiful world of high and low latitude cruising. She is part of their FPB (Functional Power Boat) Series. The first FPB 78 was designed by Steve and Linda Dashew for their personal use to allow crew and/or longer-term friends and family aboard. Two more of these yachts were built with GREY WOLF II’s sister for another very experienced yachtsmen, another FPB 64 owner. Although similar in appearance to other FPBs the FPB 78s are a step up the evolutionary ladder. GREY WOLF II is the only one of these three 78s built to MCA MGN 280 Cat ‘0’ and the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 ‘Yachts under 200 GT’. This classification means that GREY WOLF II has passed a MCA stability test in both damaged and undamaged state. This ensures that she is one of the safest boats in her class and in this size band of her type. It gives confidence to her owner and crew that she truly can cruise anywhere.

These three FPB 78s have proven the Dashew Offshore design concept by making a series of remarkable voyages look easy. 7,000 nautical miles from Fiji to Panama with a single fuel stop, whilst averaging 10 knots against prevailing winds and currents is one example. Working with Steve and Linda Dashew, the owner of GREY WOLF II and her sister FPB 78#3 evolved the specifications that would allow these extraordinary yachts to cruise far – fast, and safely.

GREY WOLF II’s MCA MGN 280 Category ‘0’, Maritime Labour Convention 2006 classicisation is in date today. It provides her with the ability to charter without limitation worldwide and is not a rule that most explorer yachts can achieve. Because of crewing requirements for MCA, she has a twin cabin forward of the owner’s stateroom plus heads compartment with sink and again the stern behind the engine room. This layout provides her with three guest cabins and two crew cabins. Her two hull sisters have now been altered to provide the same sort of set up as GREY WOLF II. This solution provides flexibility as well as the opportunity to carry crew and to have a fourth cabin for guests as you wish.

All FPB 78s have built in redundancy on most systems. GREY WOLF II is particularly heavily equipped to comply with MCA MGN 280 Cat ‘0’ and also to ensure that she met the world cruising role envisaged for her by her owner. FPB 78#1 crossed the Pacific backwards and the FPB 78#3 accompanied GREY WOLF II to Antarctica.

She has delivered in every way, making nonstop passages from New Zealand to New Caledonia, Fiji, French Polynesia and onward to Chile to Cape Horn and onto the Antarctic Peninsula twice returning home to Guernsey via Brazil and the Atlantic. She has since visited France, Scotland the Outer Hebrides.

While each of the FPB 78s have the same massive structural underpinnings and mechanical systems, each of them is unique. GREY WOLF II, like the other FPB78s, has been customised to suit the needs and preferences of her owners and is the only one built to cat ‘0’.

She has a unique Matrix Deck design that features a helm station with dual Stidd chairs (one with built in controls in the arms) that is designed to maintain external situational awareness while optimizing the functionality of modern electronics and monitoring systems.

In the aft part of the Matrix Deck there is a ‘U’ shaped table for guests to sit or eat, this also converts into watch bunk or double berth and a bench seat on the starboard side. There is a portable additional helm station, which can be operated from the port and starboard outside wing stations for close quarters manoeuvring. Controls include shift and throttle, joystick steering, bow thruster and stern thruster.

All this while enjoying an outside view of the world in comfort.

GREY WOLF II draws less than five feet / 1.8m so has immense versatility.

Skipper maintained; she is fully in commission, ready for all oceans. She is probably the most complete and competent explorer yacht of this size on the planet today. She has been designed for an adventurer who truly wants to explore the far reaches of earth’s oceans in comfort, safety and functionality. She is able to work internationally without the need for a safe port with her MCA Cat ‘0’ MCL classification.

Name to be retained by vendor.

Owner’s Comments

I commissioned the build of GREY WOLF II because I wanted a true bluewater explorer yacht that had the ability to go anywhere at any time in safety and comfort, that could also be a destination for family and friends. She has delivered 100% on these objectives and has been a wonderful platform for adventure and a great friend to me, my family and the guests that have joined us on our various voyages.

I have always enjoyed being at sea. I am a retired Merchant Navy Radio officer and before buying an FPB, I cruised extensively on my Botnia Targa 35 in local Channel Islands waters and up to Norway and the Baltic as well as making a trip to Greenland aboard a friend’s Rodman. When I started my search I had my offshore and Ocean Yachtmasters’ ticket, and in anticipation of GREY WOLF II I studied for and got my Master 200 MCA unlimited and 3000 ton Chief Mate ticket – so that I was ready for FPB cruising!

When I was looking for a new yacht, I researched the explorer market with the help of a close friend who is a Naval Architect and looked at all the possibilities – and there are some wonderful yachts out there. However, I felt that only the FPB 78 would provide the go anywhere requirement with fuel economy, range and the ability to comply with MCA MGN 280 Category ‘0’. GREY WOLF II also complies with the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. There were two reasons that it was important to me that the boat that I built complied with MCA MGN 280 Category ‘0’. The first was about safety and having a boat that was truly able to go anywhere without limit and as this rule allows for unlimited worldwide charter it set the standard I was looking for. I also wanted to have the potential for the yacht to do some charter work outside our programme and she has done this too with some success, although not as much as I originally thought as we have had too much fun cruising with her!

My FPB journey, which started with a new build project, expanded somewhat when I flew to Whangarei in North Island, New Zealand to see Circa Marine the builders of the FPB series. There was an FPB 64 called GREY WOLF in port for sale. It seemed to be a good idea to learn about my new 78 by trying out the 64, so I become the only FPB owner to buy two FPBs on the same day!

FPB 64 GREY WOLF was a fantastic test bed for bigger GREY WOLF II, and we had a lovely cruise in the stunning waters of New Zealand whilst I learned about driving an FPB. It was then that we took the decision that it would be good to have her in Europe and it was not a very big leap to make the decision to bring her back to her new home port of Guernsey in the Channel Islands on her own bottom at the start of the year and out of season. Of course, most people thought me mad, particularly designer Steve Dashew who was sure that little GREY WOLF would make it but was much less confident of the crew! Therefore, in 2014, we started our adventure and you can read all about it if you follow this link https://greywolf.berthoninternational.com/long-voyage-home/. Suffice to say, the boat behaved superbly, and the crew did not disgrace themselves. This trip taught me a lot about FPB and those lessons helped me with the ongoing build of GREY WOLF II. These were the importance of building in effective noise reduction at build, the fact that we needed a yacht with 3 double cabins with 2 further crew cabins on our new WOLF and also that a twin screw set up was a definite must.

In my ownership, GREY WOLF II has cruised far. She has taken us through the Pacific, to Chile and onto Antarctica. Then home to northern Europe with plentiful cruising (apart from a lengthy COVID pause like most bluewater yachts) to Scotland and many points between. During this cruising with family and friends, we have seen and experienced things that we will remember forever – land and seascapes and of course incredible wildlife. The standout cruises for us was our time cruising in company with GREY WOLF II’s sister FPB 78#2 IRON LADY II in Antarctica, a fascinating, exciting, challenging and at times frightening as our two small ships navigated through this beautiful, yet uncompromising place. This was truly an unforgettable cruise. We also loved our time in the Pacific – Tahiti in particular and cruising in New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

FPBs are built for endurance and to spend months away from support so access to systems for servicing and repair is excellent. Their bare metal exteriors mean that there is no varnishing or polishing of topsides – a pressure washer is the weapon of choice. GREY WOLF II’s MCA MGN 280 Category ‘0’ status means that she is inspected annually by a surveyor with a 5-year out of water survey which has recently taken place. This is a very good discipline as it means that all systems, safety gear and the fabric of the boat are regularly scrutinised. She is an easy boat to maintain but she is almost 86 feet and as with all boats of this size, you need to keep up with her. No boat of this size is cost free to maintain but we have found her cost friendly to maintain to the highest standards necessary for unlimited cruising. Her new owner will take delivery of her at that standard.

GREY WOLF II has been a glorious family yacht. We have had great family times, cruising together and she can be handled by me and one other. She offers a great platform for my family, some of whom are novice sailors but who enjoy her as a platform for living well. She has also proved a successful charter yacht. Whilst in Antarctica she was chartered to a couple of superyachts as an accommodation yacht for crew and she also handled most of the transfers using GREY WOLF II’s tenders for both yachts.

I have run GREY WOLF II with crew and with her layout this has worked well. During her build, there was much debate about the fitting of her stern thruster and whether it would offer the needed reliability. It does, and with her bow thruster and her good manners, myself and my son or another experienced hand are easily able to manage GREY WOLF II without crew for family cruises. The flexibility to have the accommodation space for crew when you wish, or to handle the boat without them has been a standout plus for me.

The GREY WOLF project, which began on that day when I became a two FPB owner, has been an extraordinary experience. With over 80,000 nautical FPB miles completed I can say without question, an FPB is the last word in go anywhere explorer yachts. We are putting GREY WOLF II onto the market with heavy hearts, as she has been an essential part of our family since her first plate was cut. However, time marches on and I no longer have the physical stamina for more strenuous adventures, which is why I built her, and the bucket list is completed. Now is the moment to hand her onto her new family and with her the endless possibilities to cruise anywhere on the planet. We have been yachting for over 45 years, starting with a runabout with outboard motors through a selection of cruising boats and finally to FPB 78 GREY WOLF II.

Our voyage to FPB started after reading Steve and Linda Dashew’s books about offshore cruising.

Our first FPB was perfect vehicle for us both to enjoy cruising at a totally new level. During our first big adventure a compression gale, on our way from New Zealand to Fiji and Tonga, threw up following seas of up to 20 feet. Little GREY WOLF and I surfed down the faces at speeds of up to 20 knots with zero broaching and all the while, we had 100% steering control. These conditions would have concerned me greatly aboard any of my previous boats.

Working closely with Steve and Linda Dashew, by now close friends, it was good to see the same massive structural underpinnings and similar mechanical systems that were so successful on our 64. The interior design is custom to us, and GREY WOLF II has her own personality, and we love her. Being the second of the series, we had the opportunity to learn from the first yacht and a lot of updates appear aboard GREY WOLF II as a result.

From launch to 2022, GREY WOLF II has steamed 34,000 extraordinary and life changing nautical miles in some of the most challenging waters on the planet.

Whoever buys GREY WOLF II will be buying the culmination of my yachting experience as well as that of Steve and Linda Dashew. We know that she will serve and look after her new owners as well as she has us. If you would like to read about sister boats the article that appeared in Motorboat & Yachting about the Antarctic cruise that GREY WOLF II and her sister FPB 78#3 took together, written by her skipper and my good friend Pete Rossin, please ask Berthon to provide this information to you.

OCEAN HORSE Yacht for Sale

Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.

Built in 2004, Ocean Horse (Ex Allsmoke) is the fourth hull of the 78’ miniseries, one of the most successful Southern Wind projects, that boast the design partnership of Reichel Pugh Design and Nauta Design.

Thanks to the Reichel Pugh naval architecture, Ocean Horse features slippery hull’ lines, a fin and bulb keel, a high aspect ratio and balanced rudder.

The general concept, the interior layout and the exterior styling are drawn by the Italian designers Nauta Design. While the UK based SP Technologies are responsible for the composite structural engineering of the hull, decks and structures, which are made in sandwich (Carbon fibres and Kevlar) with epoxy resin.

The result is an exceedingly well rounded yacht of excellent performance, whose building philosophy calls for straightforward, simple sailing systems, free from unnecessary technology.

Ocean Horse  is a real cruiser/racer, ideal both for bluewater cruises and competitive races. She enjoys an excellent reputation in the racing field, thanks to remarkable results of major races such as the Maxi Rolex Cup (Winner of 2005 Palma Superyacht Cup, first in the Mini Maxi IRC class in 2007 edition and winner of Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship Cup in 2011 edition).

A versatile deck plan incorporates a large guest cockpit protected by a recessed dodger, a generous sunbed area and a separated sailing cockpit with dual steering wheels.

A new teak has been applied on deck, appraising the yacht clean an flash lines, on spring 2015.

Ocean Horse has an interior configuration ideal for Cruising and for Charter, featuring a separation between the owner/guest area (forward) and the crew mess (aft). The access below deck is gained either through the aft or the guest cockpit companion-ways.

The stairway of the latter leads to the saloon which makes use of the full beam of the yacht. This area

accommodates an 8/10 dining table, a comfortable conversation area and luxury accessories including a refrigerator, an icemaker and a wine cooler.

Ocean Horse ’s interior follows Southern Wind Shipyard’s most popular layout, with the owner’s cabin forward:

although it is the narrowest area on the boat, it still has abundant room for two separate bunks (one double and one single bunk), storage spaces and an ensuite bathroom. This cabin layout allows privacy and

comfort also when sailing.

The same attention for privacy and comfort that are used in the master cabin are found throughout the entire yacht. The layout of Ocean Horse includes two guest cabins amidships: a twin cabin with additional Pullman bunk and a double bunk cabin; they both enjoy an en-suite head.

All guest cabins are conceived for functionality and the furniture is built in sturdy yet lightweight honeycomb sandwich veneered with natural teak.

The direct access to sailing cockpit from the crew quarters, is granted through the aft companion-way. Here

the functional galley and the nav station are linked to a pair of crew cabins with shared head forward, so that the crew and the galley area are effectively separated from the owner’s party.

The engine room access is conveniently located in the corridor which leads to the crew quarters.
