If cruising around in a private superyacht wasn’t outrageous enough, the “shadow yacht” concept added even more oomph to the billionaire lifestyle. More and more ultra-rich superyacht owners are choosing to add a second, equally stunning yacht, to accompany the mothership on all journeys, like a floating garage. And it all started with the Pursuit.

One of the benefits of traveling onboard a superyacht is that there’s room for several tenders and multiple water toys. After all, a big part of vacationing in beautiful exotic locations is the ability to have some fun on the water, in privacy. However, even these large vessels became too small for all the toys that would satisfy adventure-seeking guests, including helicopters, submarines, and large chase boats.

It’s not just about storing these toys. The bigger ones require a reliable launch system, plus additional equipment. All of this would not only take a lot of space onboard a superyacht, but would also make it look more like a commercial vessel than a floating mansion. This is how a new breed of luxury yachts was born.

They were called support yachts, or shadow vessels, and were built to take over the logistics of superyachts, as much as possible. Picture them as massive, floating garages, trailing the main yacht during cruises. Their main function is to carry all the water toys, and any other additional vehicles, which is why they always feature a heavy-duty crane onboard.

But they also double as storage spaces for everything from extra fuel and supplies to laundry, kitchen equipment, wastewater, and garbage. At first, they looked a lot like the offshore vessels in the oil and gas industry, which inspired them.

Over time, these support vessels started looking better, and integrating more comfortable accommodation. Today, shadow yachts are almost as luxurious as the motherships, even though their main role is still logistics-related.

The Dutch Damen Shipyards Group was instrumental in bringing support yachts on the market. Back in 2010, it was making waves with the first Sea Axe 5009. Currently known as Pursuit, this pioneering ship was named Oberon at the time, and claimed to be the first official support yacht.

At 50 meters (164 feet) Oberon was as large as a superyacht, but with a very different layout. Its massive, 30-meter (98 feet) open deck revealed a working area unfolding over 230 square meters (2,475 square feet). A rugged, 10-meter (32.8 feet) crane dominated the area, flexing a 15-ton lifting capacity.

At the time, Oberon broke the ice on the Fast Yacht Support market. It was the first of its kind to incorporate the Axe Bow, an innovative concept that was initially developed for military and offshore applications.

The Axe Bow was developed by Damen in collaboration with the Delft University of Technology’s Ship Hydromechanics Department. The design with a “knife-like” bow was meant to ensure top speed and fuel efficiency even in challenging weather conditions. Normally, this would result in more discomfort for passengers, especially when facing rough waters.

The Axe Bow also takes care of this inconvenience, which results in a more comfortable vessel. Before Oberon’s launch, Amels (Damen’s yacht building division) had sold several of the Sea Axe vessels, based on the Axe Bow concept. But they were all operating in the oil or military field.

When the Sea Axe was adapted for yacht design, Damen practically created a new category of yachts, which would be known as Fast Yacht Support vessels. And Oberon (renamed Pursuit) was the first one.

At the time of its launch, it was rumored to become the shadow vessel of another Amels debut, a mammoth 300-foot (91 meters) superyacht. Thirteen years later, it’s back on the market, asking for $18.3 million, and ready to become the companion of another grandiose superyacht.

Pursuit is still in top shape. During a 2015 refit, it got a fresh paint job and a touch-and-go helipad. A few years later, in 2021, it was also fitted with new Volvo generators and an upgraded navigation system. Powered by four MTU engines, Pursuit can carry up to 175,000 liters of fuel onboard. Thanks to this, it can easily cross the Atlantic at 18 knots (20.7 mph/33 kph).

As for accommodation, Pursuit only comes with three standard cabins, three guest rooms, and a lounge, doubling as a dining room. Even though this is modest, compared to the impressive amenities of today’s support yachts, Pursuit was still luxurious at the time of its debut. According to Damen, it was designed to be as stylish as the main yacht, “ rather than looking like the poor relation .” This meant a good-looking exterior, plus top- quality materials and furnishings.

Damen  has delivered more than 20 Yacht Support Vessels, between 45 and 75 meters (148 and 246 feet) since 2009. Its current YS (Yacht Support) range includes the YS 53, the YS 65, and the YS 75. The YS 75 combines the classic qualities of Damens’ shadow yachts with impressive accommodation for up to 40 crew members, plus the luxurious style of a superyacht.

Today, the line between superyachts and their shadow vessels is blurred. The latest support vessels are more like floating hotels, than garages, and are perfectly fit for accommodating extra guests in equally luxurious conditions. Underneath its tough exterior, the forefather of these extravagant vessels is still  a living legend.

Swan Shadow motor yachts | Design

There are several innovative elements in the design, all aimed at enhancing the experience for the Owner. Nautor’s Design DNA is built on a strong heritage and Swan Shadow has to meet the expectations of a clientele accustomed to luxury and performance sailing yachts. The design of Shadow incorporates features that customers might generally expect to see in larger full-custom or semi-custom yachts, features that are not too common in 40-foot powerboats.

One of these features is a movable aft platform, transforming a visually simple design from a fixed platform to a swim platform or a passarelle. The adoption of a movable platform allows better access to the water when enjoying watersports, or easier access to the dock when the vessel is used as a tender. Another design feature is the addition of optional telescopic roof pillars and moving glass panels to create a convertible cabin. This allows the boat to be used either fully open or closed for privacy and comfort during bad weather. This vessel is primarily addressed to the more discerning Owners of motor yachts or sailing yachts who are looking for a tender to their main vessels. In addition, Swan Shadow has been conceived to easily accommodate an overnight or weekend trip to the archipelago. In keeping with the original aim of versatility and focusing on user experience, the layout also fits an additional crew cabin in the bow.

Swan Shadow motor yachts – Deck

The Swan Shadow features a unique walkaround deck plan with no steps, for experiencing and enjoying the spaces in full safety. A smart bolt-on system allows for several different optional deck layouts. The design is centered around these optional layouts, allowing the owner to select the best suited option according to his personal lifestyle. The position of the three outboard engines, from 250 to 350 HP, embedded in the aft platform extends the livable area on deck, and the open stern gives a sensation of closeness to the water, perfectly suited for a boat designed to enjoy the very best of the sea.

Roof options range from a shorter T-Top to an extended Long Top that allows more protection from the elements. Generous storage is built in under deck, and additional topside bags can be selected to offer more storage volume under the bulwark, allowing handy and safe access to gear while cruising.

The interior has been designed to ensure maximum comfort and style onboard, offering accommodation for either shorter day trips or longer cruises. The forward cabin is ideally suited for a couple. An additional crew cabin can be installed in the bow to complement the cabin capacity.

Shadowl is a custom motor yacht launched in 2009 by Burger Boat Company.

Founded in 1863, Burger is one of the oldest and most respected custom yacht builders in America and has delivered yachts which can be seen in ports around the world.

Shadowl measures 43.30 metres in length, with a max draft of 2.13 metres and a beam of 8.53 metres.

Shadowl has an aluminium hull with an aluminium superstructure.

Winch Design is an award-winning design studio, established in 1986 as a specialist exterior and interior yacht designer, by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane.

Shadowl also features naval architecture by Vripack and Burger Boat Company.

The motor yachts by Nautor Swan

In January 2021 Nautor Swan, the celebrated Finnish luxury sailing yacht constructor, pushed once again its limits by entering the motor boat market with Swan Shadow.

Born from the passion that Leonardo Ferragamo has for the marine world, the Swan Shadow is broadening the range of vessels the Finnish yard offers to its customers, perfectly aligned with the core elements of its brand DNA: Performance, Quality, Elegance.

These core elements, and the values of design and innovation deeply rooted in Nautor’s heritage, are also at the base of the concept of Swan Shadow, destined to become a timeless icon.

TOUR OF SEA SHADOW (IX-529)

Sea Shadow was a test craft developed under a combined program by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Navy, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company (LMSC). Its purpose was to explore a variety of new technologies for military surface ships, these included automated ship control, Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) advantages, automation for reduced manning, rough weather seakeeping improvements with stabilizer and canard, and radar and sonar signature control. She was later used as a test platform for advanced combat systems prototypes that emphasized passive (no active radar) identification and targeting. She was always a test platform and never armed as a combatant.

To keep Sea Shadow out of the public eye, she was built inside HMB-1 and delivered in March of 1985. Night tests were conducted in 1985 and 1986 off the Santa Cruz Islands in Southern California with the barge keeping the ship under cover for repairs and replenishment during daylight. The tests were suspended in 1986 and not resumed until spring 1993 when the ship was unveiled for the first time to the public. In late 1994 the testing concluded in the San Francisco Bay, and the Sea Shadow and Hughes Mining Barge 1 were moved to San Diego and were docked at the 32nd Street pier. In May of 1999 she was reactivated for additional testing. She cost approximately $50 million to build and the total test program was approximately $195 million until she was stricken in 2006.

The Hughes Mining Barge 1 , or HMB-1 , is a uniquely designed submersible barge. She was originally built in 1973 as part of Project Azorian (a subset of Project Jennifer), the top-secret effort by the Central Intelligence Agency to salvage the remains of Soviet submarine K-129 from the ocean floor. HMB-1 was designed to be submerged under the Glomar Explorer to secretly load the large claw device that grappled the submarine (capture vehicle), and to conceal the recovered submarine. In many ways her tank structure is more similar to a submarine than a normal floating drydock. More Information on Glomar Explorer and how HMB-1 was designed to load Glomar Explorer .

After the conclusion of Project Azorian, HMB-1 was cleaned and then stored at the Todd Shipyard in San Francisco, CA until November, 1982. She was then towed to a LMSC facility in Redwood City, CA, where she was significantly modified to become the floating drydock for the construction and operations of the Sea Shadow .

Upon completion of Sea Shadow operations in 2006, HMB-1 and Sea Shadow were moved to the Susuin Bay Reserve Fleet for storage. In 2012 HMB-1 with Sea Shadow still inside was sold to Bay Ship and Yacht in Alameda, CA. They dismantled Sea Shadow and are using HMB-1 as a working ship repair drydock.

Built in steel and aluminium by Dutch yard Damen , Shadow was delivered in December 2017 as one of the yard’s series of Yacht Support Vessels.

Key features include a 190 square metre aft deck helipad, which can support a maximum take-off weight of 3,700kg. Superyacht water toy storage is another one of her strong suits, as the deck crane can lift up to 12 tonnes — enough to launch a personal submarine.

Shadow’s interior has been fitted out to a high standard, with room for up to six guests in three cabins aboard this yacht for sale . Her 496GT interior includes a main-deck master suite and a 50 square metre sundeck, situated just aft of the raised wheelhouse. Her top speed is 22 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles at 16 knots with power coming from four Caterpillar 3512-C diesel engines. For added comfort, she is fitted with Quantum zero speed stabilisers.

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!
