Boat Party moments image

Fantastic events, superb atmosphere, gorgeous views of Budapest, while enjoying 2-3-4 different types of music on the dancefloors of the awesome boats, great cocktails and the most brilliant, friendly and fun staff I've ever met. Would recommend checking them out from the bottom of my heart. Rock on Budapest Boat Party!

So much fun and one of my highlights of visiting Budapest! The views from the boat are absolutely stunning - everything on the river is lit up. The drinks were flowing and the DJ was awesome, everyone got loose and danced on the open top deck. The boat crew were super helpful and friendly as well, and there was even a free glitter stand! Would actually pay to do it again it was so much fun.

If I could go on this boat party every night for the rest of my life I seriously would. You meet the most amazing people, see the sickest sites with dope professional photographers, and will have of the drunkest nights you won’t remember. The staff is so happy and helpful the entire time and the after party is awesome!!! I cannot recommend this night/company enough!!

The Best Mediterranean Party Destinations For Superyachts in 2020

Hvar town, croatia.

The Dalmatian coast is fast becoming the French Riviera of Eastern Europe and Hvar Town is its Cannes. The most obvious party spot is Carpe Diem at the end of Hvar Harbour. From Bellini breakfasts to late night tipples, there is no time of day that this famous bar doesn’t offer a party atmosphere. In the late afternoon “Blue Hour” meets the post-beach crowd with smooth jazz music and live bands, as the sun starts to set the DJs kick in transforming the relaxed bar into a vibrant club.

After midnight, you can take a short water taxi ride to its sister bar Carpe Diem Beach, set on the small island of Marinkovo. Hidden in the thick pine forests, it is the ultimate private venue made up of a labyrinth of secret bars and intimate dance floors.

For a cool and casual alternative, Hula Hula is a bohemian refuge perched along the rocky coastline on the west side of Hvar Town. The bar is known for its apres beach parties and carefully crafted cocktails, it is also the best place in the town to watch the sun descend into the Adriatic.

Where to berth: Hvar Harbour, one of the best anchorages in Croatia and where visitors such as 78 metre Venus , 70 metre Martha Ann and 50 metre Lumiere  have dropped anchor in recent years, is right in the centre of Hvar Town, from here you can simply step from your superyacht and onto the marbled terrace of Carpe Diem.

A yachting hub on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast Göcek is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best party spots in the Mediterranean. A popular starting point for luxury yacht charters in Turkey and attracting some of the world’s largest yachts , this picturesque town comes alive during the summer months.

Göcek’s party reputation was further boosted last year by the opening of the Q Lounge as part of D-Resort Göcek. Designed by the architects of Zuma, this stunning treetop bar is the perfect place for a sundowner and also offers an exciting menu of contemporary Japanese cuisine. Open seven days a week (until late during the summer), Q lounge invites a selection of DJs transforming the relaxed vibe into full on party atmosphere later in the evenings.

Where to berth: D-Marin Göcek can accommodate yachts up to 70 metres or anchor out and tender in to the pier just below the Q Lounge.

Porto Cervo, Sardinia

The Italian seaside resort of Porto Cervo in northern Sardinia , where Silvio Berlusconi owns a villa, is one of the hottest Mediterranean party spots and is jam-packed with superyachts.

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has been to go to hang-out of the European glitterati and jet-setters since the 1960s. After the sun sets on racing a vibrant social scene kicks off with sundowners, yacht hops, beach parties and formal dinners, all in the sublime setting of Porto Cervo.

Where to berth: Porto Cervo Marina is the obvious place to enjoy the party scene.

Porto Montenegro, Montenegro

Montenegro has revived its glamorous reputation as a superyacht party hotspot and has even been dubbed ‘ the next Monaco for yacht charters ’.

Since opening in 2015, Platinum immediately stole the limelight as the top nightclub in the country.

Located within Porto Montenegro, Platinum is open until late every night of the summer season and is host to a number of world renowned DJs. For a more relaxed evening, The Clubhouse, also within the Yacht Club, has a more laid back atmosphere with an electric drinks menu, live music and quirky themed nights.

Where to berth: No place typifies Montenegro’s revival more than superyacht heaven Porto Montenegro , which offers everything a superyacht owner could want.

Port Hercules, Monaco

No place is associated with the Mediterranean party season as much as this part of the French Riviera. From the celebrity yacht parties during the Cannes Film Festival to the adrenaline and fun of the Monaco Grand Prix , the area comes alive in May. However, throughout the season there are plenty of parties and nightclubs, such as Jimmy'z, packed with famous faces.

Where to berth: When it comes to a glamorous party atmosphere few places can match Port Hercules. One of the best places to spot celebrities on superyachts , there are numerous companies available to help to organise the perfect party.

Ibiza, Balearic islands

Arguably no destination is more synonymous with summer Mediterranean partying than Ibiza . Ushuaia Beach Club opened in 2011 and, with its poolside stage and chic atmosphere, has fast become an iconic Ibiza venue. If you don’t want to be in the middle of the action but still want to feel involved, then reserve a VIP box, which hangs over the crowds and offers fantastic views across the club and stage.

Where to berth: Ushuaia Beach Club is on Playa d’en Bossa in the south of the island, so yachts can either anchor and tender guests in and out, or head around to the main port and a VIP service will bring guests to the club.

**Nearby: **Less well known than some summer party spots, Formentera is Ibiza’s quieter (but just as exciting) neighbour. The Gecko Beach Club, which sits on 150 metres of unspoiled yellow sand, is fast becoming the new place to be seen; Leonardo DiCaprio and Sienna Miller are fans of its laid back atmosphere.

Mykonos, Greece

Tourist-heavy Mykonos might seem off-putting during high-season but if you know where to head there are still plenty of places to party in style. A 10 minute drive from Mykonos Marina is Nammos Beach Bar situated on Psarou Beach. A favourite hang-out for the wealthy Greek jet-set, it turns from lounge to nightclub in the evening.

Where to berth: Ornos bay is situated in the South-West of the island is one of most popular in Mykonos because it’s sheltered from the Meltemi. The bay is also home to Kuzina, which is a great bar and restaurant by the beach with a fun ambiance.

Image: Adobe Stock

Saint Tropez, France

The other must-party place on the French Riviera is, of course, Saint-Tropez. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (September 26 – October 2) is the ultimate way to finish the summer season with yachting enthusiasts from across the world drawn to the event. Le Club 55 on Pampelonne beach and Byblos Hotel’s Les Caves du Roy nightclub (pictured) are both great venues to celebrate the end of the summer.

Where to berth: Port De Saint-Tropez is the best way to experience true Saint Tropez. The terrace is set back from the main key and is chock-a-block with chic boutiques and bijou restaurants. The modern marina outside the old port is quieter and still within easy reach of the town.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona's laconic medieval cobbled streets and sprawling Gothic architecture do not necessarily scream "party destination" at first glance, but the city comes alive at night. The Catalan capital enjoys a vibrant clubbing scene, with a host of luxury venues for pleasure-seekers to choose from. Opium Club , with its views of the Med and access to Barceloneta beach, is the perfect spot to watch the sun rise (if you make it that long!). The Sutton Club , favoured by the city's glitterati, is also an excellent choice after a lengthy Spanish supper.

Where to berth : Barcelona’s starry OneOcean Port Vell, which can host superyachts up to 190 metres, is just a stone’s throw from the city centre.

Selecting the right destination

Want to party with the stars at the Cannes Film Festival? Just ask

Prefer a private desert island-type setting to celebrate with your friends and family? The  Caribbean and  The Bahamas have plenty of secluded bays in which to anchor and spend quality time with your favourite people. Here is a selection of the finest destinations to host your super, superyacht party.

You can always find a beach to call your own

Spring signals the start of the yachting season on the Côte d’Azur, with the Cannes Film Festival opening the show. From May, the Riviera lights up as A-list celebrities descend to see and be seen at arguably the most glamorous film festival in the world. The best parties are, of course, on board the most exclusive superyachts, berthed in the marina right next to the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals.

Magicians or musicians, club singers or cocktail slingers, we can add sparkle to any occasion

Further along the coast, Monaco glitters with seven centuries of regal heritage. The iconic Port d’Hercule is within champagne-popping range of the gilded principality’s world-renowned gourmet restaurants, A-list clubs, and designer boutiques. Sport is also a favourite pastime in Monaco, and the principality hosts several popular events including the Formula 1 Grand Prix in May.

As evening comes, the parties begin

Chartering a superyacht trackside at this event provides not only the best vantage point for you and your guests to watch the action, but also puts you right in the thick of the action where you can literally smell the gasoline and burning tyre rubber from these amazing cars. Burgess has the right contacts to also get you into the pit lane, rubbing shoulders with the drivers before the race, and partying afterwards at the Amber Lounge.

Despite its reputation as the  Balearics ' party-island, Ibiza has more recently evolved to be among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous charter cruising grounds. The vibe throughout the summer season is all about lazy lunches, diving off deck in secret coves, and losing yourself in the rural countryside inland. The White Isle as Ibiza is known, also offers the waterborne visitor an almost unrivalled selection of beach clubs.

There is no cooler way to arrive at Ibiza's fabled beach clubs

Arrive in style by tender and join the glitterati enjoying the sunshine and sunset accompanied by chilled music before heading back on board to celebrate in style. Alternatively, as the sun sets and the vibe picks up a beat or two, head to Ibiza Town’s effortlessly cool hangouts where you can dance until dawn to the world's best DJs.

St Barth is without a doubt the New Year’s Eve capital of the Caribbean. Always a haven for celebrities at any time of year, the island brings in the new year with impromptu New Year’s Eve 'boat hopping' parties and stops at the many beach bars that dot the island. As the clock ticks towards midnight, step up on deck aboard your superyacht for a front row seat to the kaleidoscope of fireworks exploding over Gustavia Harbour.

Ring in the New Year in impeccable style

This French-speaking island is perfect for a lavish New Year’s Eve celebration. Think cocktails on deck, al fresco dinner with friends before cranking up the sound system to celebrate the passing of midnight. Expect relaxed, short-distance cruising as you island-hop through the Leeward Islands in the days following the celebrations. What better way to kick off your year than this?

Harbour Island, Bahamas

The Bahamas offers a variety of activities for parties aboard and ashore. From local restaurants, hanging out with friends at a lively beach bar, or your very own private sunset beach party, whatever you choose to do, the Bahamian culture will facilitate, with festivals, music, dancing and colourful parades continuing into the early hours. 'Fresh up' and enjoy life Bahmian-style.

The Bahamas is a blaze of bold colours and laid-back lifestyles

Harbour Island has recently come into the limelight with the arrival of a handful of chic new places recently opening on the island. With its pink-sand beach and pretty pastel cottages, the shoreline provides a perfect backdrop to sunset cocktails on board, followed by a trip ashore to a party at the legendary Vic-Hum Club. The oldest nightclub on the island, the open-air dancefloor at this humble yet iconic destination has attracted celebrities the world over.

Choosing the right yacht

From the crew to the layout, the facilities and even the décor, there are many facets of a yacht that, when combined, will influence the success of a superyacht party. The most successful charter yachts lend themselves to any type of occasion, be it a cocktail party or formal dinner party.

Some yachts and crews lend themselves to entertainment better than others

No matter what the style of celebration, there is a yacht to suit every taste. Likewise the crew can make or break a celebration, whether because they can theme any party in a creative way, or simply because the six-star service and smiling faces will give the party the right vibe.

Birthday parties, anniversaries, retirement, there's always a reason to celebrate

Burgess yachts with bars

Whether celebrating, drinking sunset cocktails, a pre-dinner drink or watching sports events, the bar on a yacht is generally one of the focal points on board a superyacht. They come in many forms, ranging from wet bars on the sun deck to sit-up bars in the beach club, sky lounge bars and cosy saloon bars, backlit-onyx bars, and elegant marble-top bars.

Have fun with a theme

Nothing says party more than people dressing up, and themed parties are almost always popular among charter guests. They create memorable experiences – even more so when the yacht is decked out in appropriately themed decorations.

A themed event adds theatre and means everyone gets into the spirit

From an elegant James Bond-themed evening, perhaps with poker and blackjack tables set up, to a retro-style '60s party with a dancefloor and appropriate playlist, or Pirates of the Caribbean, they can revolve around just about any concept imaginable.

A '60s theme comes with a deliciously groovy soundtrack

For those cruising in the Caribbean, consider a pirate party involving all the family. Many crews are well known for the creativity and polish of their themed parties. While keeping the younger guests entertained with a treasure hunt on the beach, you can enjoy sundowners on the sand.

A pirate theme comes with all sorts of fun narratives, treasure hunts and battles

Back on board enjoy drinks on the sun deck before dining al fresco on the main deck. If you're having a larger bash in port, have your pirate outfits sent ahead and the yacht dressed with pirate paraphernalia. Canapes and rum cocktails can be served in treasure chests!

Why are pirates called pirates? Because they Arrr!

While in the Mediterranean, perhaps cruising around the  Greek islands , a toga party might involve some Greek cuisine followed by dancing, and then a movie night under the stars with Mamma Mia or My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding on the big screen. Or while in Cannes, a Bollywood party, or in Monaco why not throw a Mexican fiesta during the Grand Prix?

A Mamma Mia party while cruising the Greek Islands? Why not!

Poolside parties

On the larger more modern superyachts spa pools are generally a given these days, and although some may be limited to a sun deck jacuzzi, the largest of the charter yachts usually have all manner of water features, ranging from infinity pools with waterfalls, glass-bottomed pools, swim-up bars, and pools with counter currents.

And then you have the real party yachts, with swimming pools that turn into dance floors, and built-in DJ booths for the ultimate occasion aboard. The 73m  TITANIA , for example, hosts her guests around the pool deck bar with seating for up to eight guests, and another four seats inside the pool itself, all complete with a DJ set up to create a real pool party atmosphere.

Consider your guest list

Whether your party is a small and intimate affair or a large, quayside event, most yachts can accommodate up to 12 guests while cruising and hundreds more while berthed alongside, when different rules apply.

However, understated elegance is key, with fewer guests and more quality time to socialise. In fact, 100-120 guests is often considered the tipping point of human intimacy and interaction, so keep this in mind when considering a larger gathering.

In port regulations allow yachts to welcome many more guests

Entertainment

Entertainment systems have always played an important role in the overall yacht party experience. Audio-visual technologies have changed significantly over the past decade, and the most successful charter yachts feature the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art and fully-integrated entertainment systems throughout their guest areas.

A tiered cinema and surround sound make sure everyone gets the best experience

From indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities, and the latest audio-visual equipment (including on-demand movies and music systems available throughout all guest areas and strong Wi-Fi for streaming), to private cinema rooms and outdoor cinema set-ups, almost anything available on land is also possible at sea.

An outdoor cinema screen delivers movies under the stars

Music and speakers

Music is an essential part of any party, and whether you prefer the dulcet tones of Adele during dinner or the pumping beats of a live DJ set during a dockside party, music always sets the tone. Surround sound systems for yachts with their own dedicated cinemas have become the norm, while built-in speakers on the party deck are fine tuned to deliver the best possible audio quality regardless of the musical genre.

Most charter yachts take sound quality very seriously indeed - the best of everything

Some yachts have a dual-purpose feature - a sun deck, for example - that transforms into a party deck after dark and music entices guests from open-air dining on the bridge deck below to party upstairs. Live bands are no longer de rigeur, instead world-famous DJs can be booked by your Burgess charter broker to come on board and play their set for your guests, with some big names keen to play private gigs.

A sun deck nightclub could welcome the biggest names in clubland

Gourmet dining with your own personal chef is obviously one of the principal attractions of any charter vacation, but however delicious the dishes may be, how your meals are presented will have a huge impact on the overall dining experience.

Why not bring a Michelin-starred celebrity chef on board for a private dining experience?

An al fresco or formal dining set-up large enough to seat the number of guests invited is of course a must. For larger, cocktail events, a few different open-air dining options are better suited. The trend for celebrity chefs catering for such large events is on the rise, working hand in hand with your own superyacht chef to create the ultimate tasty menu to wow your guests.

Huge swathes of guest deck space make for stellar entertainment

For some, proximity to the ocean is a must, so why not dine in a yacht's beach club right by the water’s edge. The 62m  BATON ROUGE , for example, features an ocean-level beach club that incorporates lounging areas and easy access to the water by day, and transforms into the ultimate al fresco dining area by night.

A huge beach club, like BATON ROUGE's, can really make a charter, day and night

Alternatively, many modern yachts feature Teppanyaki grills – perfect for guests looking to experience something a little different in a tropical climate. Plus you and your guests get the chef's table experience with wonderful dishes prepared before your very eyes and served straight from the grill.

A Teppanyaki grill adds a touch of theatre to any meal

The raised aft deck seating area aboard the 56m MY SEANNA can be converted into a dancefloor complete with state-of-the-art sound. There's also a backlit bar and lounge/dining area on the bridge deck, a 10-person spa pool that has its own bar, and a beach club at water level.

Helipads present the ideal option for a dancefloor and a huge jacuzzi to cool your feet afterwards

The aforementioned 73m  TITANIA also features a beach club, complete with sauna, which can then be converted into a nightclub to continue celebrations into the night. You could even have your make-up and hair done in the yacht's beauty salon before the evening celebrations begin.

TITANIA's beach club transforms into a nightclub after dark

Special touches make it memorable

Details make all the difference. Ambient lighting, an attentive crew, the quality of sound or the welcome cocktail, the most successful and memorable superyacht parties are those where the crews have gone the extra mile. The occasions will usually dictate the type of party and the style.

Tablescaping is just one way of elevating your entertainment experience

For example, an anniversary celebration might have a more romantic theme, with soft lighting and candles, and elegant crockery and flowers all adding to the intimate sense of occasion. A New Year’s Eve celebration or birthday might however require more of a fun or risqué theme. Whatever you want, it can be done.

Romance is in the air! It's impossible for love not to blossom

Most of the yachts in the Burgess charter fleet are designed for entertaining, with guest areas outstandingly assigned to allow for all manner of occasions according to desire. The yachts in the selection above are just afew of those recommended by Burgess charter experts as welcoming celebrations.

✔️ Tips For Visiting A European Party Island

✅  Know How You’ll Be Getting Home!  Some party islands in Europe have modes of transportation just for travelers, like the famous “Disco Bus” in Ibiza, but a lot of them don’t!

Always keep in mind how you’ll be getting home after a night out because a lot of the smaller islands also  do not have taxi-hailing apps like Uber , and instead still rely on traditional taxis you have to call from your phone or a taxi rank.

✅  Consider Taking A Party Cruise  – Party cruises are a great alternative to clubs on dry land because you get to see more of the island on your night out than if you were inside a nightclub.  Ibiza  and Mykonos  are known for having great party cruises!

✅  Stay Hydrated  – There’s nothing worse than being hungover on vacation; these Electrolyte Tablets  are carry-on friendly and can turn any water into a hangover-fighter!

✅  Download Your Hotel’s Location On Google Maps Offline  – Don’t get lost on a night out! If for whatever reason you lose service while on a night out, it’s always helpful to have a Google Map of your location downloaded offline. You can save your hotel’s location offline as well, so you can show taxi drivers where you are going.

✅  Bring Beach Clothes Cute Enough To Go Out In!  Lots of Beach Cover-Ups  today are nice enough in their own right to wear on a night out, which will save a lot of room in your suitcase.

✅  Know That You Might Need Tickets In Advance  – Some of the popular clubs on party islands in Europe have admission tickets. Sometimes,  especially  if there’s a popular DJ playing, they sell out far in advance!

✅  Don’t forget travel insurance! The last thing you want to happen is to be sent home because of medical bills from a party accident. I recommend SafetyWing for remote workers and HeyMondo for shorter vacations.

When Is The Best Time To Visit A European Party Island?

Greece is a top party and sailing destination, so it only makes sense that it has some of the best party islands in Europe.

The top destination in Greece is Mykonos, which is known for its beautiful beaches, swanky nightclubs, and lively bars. Mykonos’ reputation as a legendary party scene goes all the way back to the 1960’s. For chill nights, there is a neighborhood called Little Venice, or Chora, where you can sip cocktails overlooking the ocean. For a little day drinking, you’ll have a great time at Psarrou Beach, where Paradise Club, Tropicana Beach Bar, and Cavo Paradiso are located.

> Search listings:   Boat rentals in Greece

The Mykonos Port makes mooring in Mykonos easy. For Stern-to morning, it costs about 3 euros per day for 40ft lengths, and side mooring will be an extra 25%. Water and power cost extra too, about 10 euros per cubic meter and 0.65 euros per kWh, respectively.

Other honorable mentions include Ios, Zakynthos, Skiathos, and Corfu.

Sailing holidays in Split

A trendy hotspot, Croatia is an amazing place to party. Home to 718 islands, 389 islets and 78 reefs - there are plenty of party islands in Croatia.

Most notably, Pag is the perfect party stop for your sailing holiday. Known as the “Croatian Ibiza”, on Pag you can spend the day at summer beach parties and music festivals. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Ibiza, the absolute ultimate party island in Spain, Europe, and potentially the world. After all, Mike Posner wrote a whole song about the crazy parties in Ibiza. While you can spend a sailing holiday in Ibiza relaxing on the beach and enjoying the weather - Ibiza is more known for the renowned clubs, like Pacha and Ushuaïa. If you’re not feeling the discotecas, head to the Sunset Strip along thee Caló des Moro in San Antonio for a more atmospheric setting. There you’ll be able to watch the sunset, have a drink, and listen to some low-key music.

San Antonio is where smaller yachts and charter boats typically moor, but Ibiza Town is where all the glamorous nightlife is located. Make sure to book well in advance since it’s such a popular destination. Luckily, if you’re trying to avoid expensive marina fees, you can try anchoring in one of the many small bays that will offer a safe, secure anchorage.

If you’re looking for a party island in Spain, definitely check out Mallorca, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote as well.

Best party islands in Asia

Sailing holidays in Thailand

When you think of partying in Thailand, most people think of the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach. It’s a can’t-miss experience in Koh Phagan, which is also home to beautiful sandy beaches and a lush jungle interior.

However, if you’re looking for a big city experience you’ll have to head to Phuket, one of the larger islands. Patong Beach on Phuket is one of the top party destinations worldwide. In Thailand you can also visit Ko Phi Phi Don, Koh Tao, and Koh Phangan for some other top party islands.

Other spots worth mentioning are Tioman Island and Langkawi in Malaysia . Tioman Island may be a little less rowdy than some of the other islands we’ve mentioned, but it's a great place to relax with some sundowners on Salang beach after a day of snorkeling and sunbathing. If you’re looking for a more luxury sailing holiday, head to Langkawi.  Pantai Cenang is the place to be for an evening out, as the stretch of restaurants it is home to turn into cocktail bars after-hours.

Best party islands in Americas

You’ll need to head down to the Caribbean to find some of the best party islands in the Americas.

The French-Dutch island of Saint Martin is known for its hospitality and has been nicknamed “The Friendly Island.” The French side has plenty of great attractions like beach barbeque restaurants, nudist beaches, and great views, however - the Dutch side is where the party is at. Phillipsburg offers gourmet restaurants, luxe casinos, and vibrant street parties and cultural festivals.

To dock in Simspon Bay, you’ll have to pay deck, meeting and clearing fees. Clearance fees range from $2 to $9+ depending on the ton. Lump sums charged in addition to mooring fees are $5-20 by ton. Then the daily mooring fee ranges from $20-290 depending on length.

Other party islands in the Americas include Morro De Sao Paulo or Florianopolis in Brazil , and Caye Caulker, Belize are also known as top party islands in the Caribbean. Last, but not least, we couldn’t forget Key West in the US .

Saied shaking hands with von der Leyen outdoors for the cameras

European Commission accused of ‘bankrolling dictators’ by MEPs after Tunisia deal

Members of justice committee say €150m in EU funding went straight to country’s president, Kais Saied

The European Commission has been accused of “bankrolling dictators” by senior MEPs who have claimed that the €150m it gave to Tunisia last year in a migration and development deal has ended up directly in the president’s hands.

A group of MEPs on the human rights, justice and foreign affairs committees at the European parliament launched a scathing attack on the executive in Brussels, expressing anxiety over reports that the commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, was about to seal a similar deal with Egypt .

The Greek migration minister, Dimitris Kairidis, confirmed late on Wednesday that a joint declaration between the EU and Egypt had been agreed and would be formally unveiled when von der Leyen and the leaders of Greece, Italy and Belgium visit Cairo on Sunday.

The agreement sees Egypt receiving an aid package of €7.4bn (£6.3bn) “mostly in loans” in return for the country “committing to work harder on migration”, he told the Guardian, adding: “I have said, time and again to my colleagues, that we need to support Egypt which has been so helpful in managing migration and so important for the stability of North Africa and the wider Middle East.”

Kairidis, who held talks with the Egyptian ambassador to Greece on Wednesday, confirmed there had been no boats leaving directly from Egypt, even if arrivals on southern Greek islands of migrants travelling through Libya had soared this year. “Egypt is not only hosting 9 million refugees, it has been very effective in controlling illegal migration,” he said.

The MEPs have accused the commission of refusing to answer questions on the deal with Tunisia and worry that it is looking at a series of “ad hoc” deals with other African countries without regard to democracy and rule of law in those countries.

“It seems that we are bankrolling dictators across the region. And that is not the Europe that we want to see. That is not the place which the EU should be holding in the world,” said the French MEP Mounir Satouri, a member of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

At a press conference in Strasbourg, he claimed the money – pledged to Tunisia last year as part of a wider pact aimed at curbing a surge in migration to Italy and people-smuggling – had been diverted, saying that the €150m was supposed to have been invested directly in an EU-agreed project but instead had been “transferred to the president directly”.

Fellow MEPs said there had been an “authoritarian shift” in Tunisia under its president, Kais Saied, but the commissioners had gone ahead with the deal anyway.

A spokesperson for the EU commission said MEPs were entitled to express their views but that it was better to build partnerships to improve democracy and human rights than to “break off relations” and see the situation deteriorate.

“What I can say is that we are absolutely convinced of the necessity to work with countries in our neighbourhood, taking into account the realities on the ground,” the spokesperson said. “We know the criticism related to human rights in those countries, and it is obvious that this is an issue and that these are issues that we take up with those countries.”

The spokesperson added there were “specific mechanisms in place to discuss human rights with the countries in the region, including Egypt”.

Olivér Várhelyi gesturing as he speaks at a podium

The Danish MEP Karen Melchior, coordinator of the justice committee, said parliamentarians’ concerns about the Tunisia deal were “being continually ignored” and that commissioners refused to answer their questions or take their concerns seriously.

“How can we continue to have a memorandum of understanding, how can we give budget support without conditionality to Tunisia, when things are going from bad to worse?” she said.

“To sign an agreement with President Saied, who is continuing to suppress opposition and democracy in Tunisia – this is not the way the EU should be acting. This is not the way that Team Europe should be doing our foreign policy.”

The chair of the human rights committee, Udo Bullman, attacked what he said was a “hush-hush” deal that had been rushed through.

“The commission has to explain why there was so much urgency in the agreement of last summer – why it, hush-hush, very quickly before Christmas, [said] it was of the ‘highest urgency’ and just gave the money … without any critical debate,” he said, adding this was a question for the EU’s commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and for von der Leyen.

Michael Gahler, the German CDU MEP who was blocked from visiting Tunisia by the local authorities last year , said the Tunisian people should not be abandoned in the face of “Saied’s autocratic rule” and economic decline.

“That requires us to make sure that European taxpayers’ money truly benefits the Tunisian people and the civil society … and why it has to be clear that European funding to Tunisia needs to be adequately conditioned to that end,” he said.

The concerns are being voiced this week as the EU parliament’s five-year mandate draws to a close before elections in June, with MEPs keen to lay down red lines for any future deals the executive in Brussels intends to do.

Sara Prestianni, the advocacy director for the NGO EuroMed Rights, said she was concerned the EU was about to make a similar “strategic and political” mistake with Cairo, pledging vast sums of money without setting conditions involving enough financial oversight or guarantees on human rights. “It would be an error, particularly if it [the Tunisia deal] is replicated with Egypt,” she said.

Satouri, who is also the parliament’s special rapporteur for Egypt, said: “We need to ensure democratic procedures are followed before money is disbursed. These are not the private fund of Commissioner Várhelyi. These are European funds.”

Politics latest: Chancellor appears to let slip when election could be

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has nodded to when the election could be held after a former minister warned Tory plotters against ousting Rishi Sunak beforehand. The shadow chancellor, meanwhile, has outlined Labour's rather cautious approach to how the party would manage the economy.

That's it for our political coverage for the day.

Make sure to join us tomorrow to stay up to date with the latest developments in Westminster and further afield.

Find some of today's top stories below.

We've been reporting today on the chancellor's appearance at a House of Lords committee, where he appeared to suggest the general election will happen in October.

Ministers have been coy on specifics until now, only going as far to say that autumn is likely.

Since Jeremy Hunt's comment earlier, we've been narrowing down the potential dates we could finally go to the polls (see pinned post).

You can watch the moment he seemed to let the likely month slip below:

Labour's Rachel Reeves, the woman who could become Britain's first female chancellor, delivered a major speech tonight about the party's economic policy.

You can get the main points in our 18.41 post .

Ahead of that, she spoke with our economics and data editor Ed Conway about her plans - and Ed didn't come away with a great deal of clarity about how she'd set herself apart from the Tories...

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023, leaving four pledges outstanding.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

It has been confirmed the UK is now in recession, which means the PM's pledge to grow the economy is not being met.

With the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?

You can see the progress for yourself below.

A new Sky News series,  Faultlines , covers in-depth and immersive reports exploring contemporary social challenges across the UK.

This episode asks "is our housing market in crisis?", with not enough homes and expensive rentals forcing an increasing number of people into homelessness.

In 2021/22, just 7,528 new social homes were delivered - nowhere near enough for the 1.1 million people on the waiting list and the government’s target of building 300,000 new homes a year.

Seaside town Hastings is on the front line of all that is wrong with the housing system, with evictions, social housing shortages and Airbnb among the issues behind the problem.

On this episode of the Sky News Daily, Tom Cheshire talks to our people and politics correspondent Nick Martin in Hastings, to uncover the scale of the issues, and hear from those at the heart of it.

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about different political parties.

Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 21-point lead, averaging at 44.1% in the polls, with the Tories on 23.1%.

In third is Reform UK on 11.3%, followed by the Lib Dems on 9.8%.

The Green Party stands at 5.8%, and the SNP on 2.9%.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

Jeremy Hunt's tantalising "if the general election is in October" aside to the House of Lords' economic affairs committee was surely no accident.

No way was it a slip of the tongue.

The 14 peers who sit on their lordships' equivalent of the Treasury select committee in the Commons include some wise and experienced old timers: an ex-chancellor and two former Treasury mandarins.

Okay, so Norman Lamont's record as John Major's chancellor from 1990 to 1993 was hardly an unmitigated triumph.

Remember Black Wednesday?

But Terry Burns was a distinguished chief economic adviser and permanent secretary at the Treasury in the Thatcher, Major and early Blair and Brown period.

And Andrew Turnbull, the mandarin's mandarin, was also Treasury permanent secretary under Mr Brown and Sir Tony's cabinet secretary.

So Mr Hunt knew exactly what he was doing.

Apart from the soap opera of Tory plots against the PM, the date of the general election is all MPs are talking about and parliament's constant guessing game at present.

Now, the PM and the chancellor appear to be narrowing it down.

Read more below:

Our  deputy political editor Sam Coates was listening to shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves tonight, as she outlined her plans for the economy if she gets the keys to Number 11 Downing Street.

At the "prominent" lecture Ms Reeves gave in the City ( see 18.41 post ), she made an announcement which will "upset many on the left of the Labour Party".

Sam says it "could even upset some in the Labour front bench".

"She has committed to copying one of the key Tory rules about how much you can borrow and the restraints on borrowing that you will have to follow," he explains.

These fiscal rules are basically restraints on how much you can borrow.

The rule she committed to was to have debt falling as a percentage of GDP by the fifth year of a forecast at a budget.

Sam adds: "This is hugely important because it will significantly constrain the amount of money that Labour can borrow after an election, dramatically narrowing the options for higher spending after an election - which some on the Labour left think is worrying.

"Some think that it does not leave enough gap between Labour and the Conservatives.

"Rachel Reeves thinks that you need to emphasise how Labour will look after people's money.

"But given the Labour Party is 20 points ahead, doubling down even further by creating yet more self-imposed limits that make it harder to spend more on health and education post-election...

"Well, that is going to worry some."

By Rob Harris , sports correspondent

The government insists it will not block nations from owning football clubs – despite banning foreign states from controlling newspapers.

Both issues landed at the desk of Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer as plans for a regulator for English football were advanced just as the Abu Dhabi-led takeover of The Daily Telegraph was effectively blocked ( read more ).

Ms Frazer told Sky News: "We won't be bringing in any measures in relation to foreign ownership of football clubs."

While a paper might appear to be a greater means to exert influence politically, football has shown how clubs can become a tool for states.

Sections of Newcastle fans became cheerleaders for the Saudi state as the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund fended off human rights protests to buy the northeast club in 2021.

And the presence of Abu Dhabi has been felt across Manchester City since they have been transformed into a global force.
