Dock walking

Yachting is a very competitive industry to break into.

Every year, there are large numbers of crew who are keen to gain their first experiences in the industry and most entry-level crew gain their first experiences by dock walking. With pre-season preparations and last-minute turnarounds, there are often a number of yachts looking for enthusiastic crew to help with getting the boat up to suitable standards for their owner and/or charter guests. Dock walking is essentially, travelling to “yachting hubs” such as ports and shipyards in South of France, Italy or Palma and will involve approaching and speaking with the crew (where possible) and handing over your CV to an onboard crew member,  with the aim of securing day-work, seasonal role or even a permanent position. Nowadays, marinas and shipyards have much higher security, so dock walking can be difficult at times, but it is still possible to find day work.  We recommend getting started early in the morning as a much better time to see and approach crew.

Booking into crew houses or shared accommodation in the area makes networking with other crew members easier,  and expanding your network allows for more awareness of potential job opportunities. Facebook pages are also another way to find entry level positions.  Vessels often post opportunities on pages such as Antibes Yacht Crew and Palma Yacht Crew.

Dock walking Hints and Tips

  • Make sure your CV stands out from the crowd, in a good way!   Make sure you take enough CV copies with you! Follow our Green Crew CV template below for help
  • Gaining that first role is about being in the right place at the right time for the right boat. Do not be disheartened by rejections, it’s competitive. Don’t give up!
  • Be presentable! Neat and tidy.  Look like you could come aboard straight away and join their crew
  • Be open minded when it comes to the position/rank on offer, the most important part of dock walking is getting that first experience to build on your CV and skills and then who knows where it can lead.
  • Be polite and patient. Crew are busy and working. Smile, show some personality, but do not be overbearing.
  • For Dock walking in the USA, ensure you have the relevant visas

Preparing for your Yacht Interview

Below wording and  x 2 interview images attached?

Having a good CV is not always enough to secure that first role in yachting. Your personality and attitude are also extremely important when it comes to securing a job.

Captains and other head of departments will want to know that you will fit in well with the rest of the team and that you have the right mindset to work onboard the yacht.

Once there has been some interest in your CV, yacht interviews will usually be held face to face if nearby the vessel, or more commonly, by telephone or video call.

For video interviews: select a surface where you can rest your phone/laptop on, so you’re not holding it in your hand. Make sure you have good lighting in the room and check the room for clutter in the background. Test your camera and speaker are working!

Should you manage to secure an interview, we recommend that you:

  • Have impeccable presentation
  • Be prepared, research where possible
  • Ensure you get across ALL relevant experience for the role that you are interviewing for, but show willingness to learn and expand your knowledge and experience
  • Be honest about your experience
  • Show commitment to the boat
  • Listen to the interviewer
  • Treat all interviews, including virtual, as if they are face to face
  • Always stay professional
  • Have any questions prepared prior to interview
  • Thank the interviewer for his/her time.

GREEN CREW HUB

Super Yacht on the ocean with working crew preparing to dock

Are you looking to enter The Yachting Industry?

We are passionate about supporting you as you pursue the yachting industry! With our team of experienced ex-yacht crew and their knowledge of the job search process, you can rely on our expertise to help you find the perfect yachting job.

We have created our Green Crew Hub to provide a wealth of information and resources to help you navigate the yachting industry. Check out our extensive Green Crew FAQs below.

  • What is meant by ‘The Yachting Industry’? Currently, there are more than 10,000 superyachts around the globe, with lengths ranging from 24 metres to more than 100 metres. These yachts require qualified and skilled crew. The yachting industry is worth billions of dollars and is known for having cutting-edge leisure yachts, typically used by the super-rich.
  • What is the definition of a superyacht? A Superyacht is a luxury custom-designed vessel that exemplifies the highest level of craftsmanship. They can either be a Sail Yacht (S/Y) or Motor Yacht (M/Y) and have an overall length of 24 metres or more.
  • The difference between Charter and Private yachts A Private yacht is owned by someone who intends to use it with friends and family. A Charter yacht will also be used privately by the owner but can also be hired by other parties for a predetermined period.
  • I want to travel while I work. Where could I go? The yachting industry provides a wide range of itineraries. The most typical is a dual-season yacht travelling the Mediterranean and the USA/Caribbean commonly known as ‘The Milk Run’. Some yachts also opt to operate in single seasons, with busier summers and winters spent in their preferred location for maintenance work and downtime. There are also yachts that cruise around the globe in regions like the Indian, Pacific, Southern, and Arctic Oceans.
  • Yachting seasons The yachting industry typically falls into two seasons: a "Mediterranean Season" from May to October and a "Caribbean Season" from November to April. These months may change based on the owner's plans with the vessel. If you are going to the South of France or Palma, we advise beginning your search for work at the end of March into April to give you the best chance of finding a position before the season kicks off.
  • Yachting hubs Here are a few Yachting Hubs to take a look at: Antibes, France Palma de Mallorca, Spain Barcelona, Spain The Caribbean Florida, USA West Palm Beach, USA
  • What work will I do? Your ambitions and goals are important when considering your future career in yachting. You should do your research and develop a strategy based on your skills, interests, and job history in order to choose the position that is most appropriate for you. It is advantageous to enter the industry with a desire to learn new skills while also integrating your existing knowledge into your new position. Fortunately, there are multiple departments on board, giving you the freedom to change course if you decide your abilities and interests would be better suited elsewhere.
  • Yachting departments Please remember that there are always opportunities for career progression and skill expansion within each department. Interior Engineering Galley Deck
  • Is yachting a career for me? Working on a yacht can open many doors, but it might not be the best career path for everyone. Before you choose to pursue it, consider some of the advantages and what some could deem to be disadvantaged. Many people join the yachting industry because they anticipate earning an incredible salary, but make no mistake—you must work really hard to do so. You will work long hours for several weeks while guests are on board. If you have a strong work ethic and resilience in this fast-paced environment, the rewards can be fantastic. For the majority, one of the main benefits of wanting to start yachting is the opportunity to travel and explore different places. Although it may sound enticing, you must be prepared to spend extended periods of time away from home and frequently miss significant family gatherings and holidays such as Christmas. It's important to consider how well you will cope with being away from home for long periods of time and how open you are to new challenges. Some of the main objectives are to ensure the yacht runs efficiently and safely while catering to the guests' every need and enabling them to have an amazing time. To be a valued member of a team it is key to remain open and flexible. You should be happy taking direction and constructive criticism from others while maintaining a positive attitude. Finding personal space can be challenging for the crew because they live, work, and socialise together. Despite the fact that yachts are luxurious for both owners and guests, you'll find that the cabin you'll be in is typically quite small. You will share a cabin with 1-4 people depending on the size and layout of the yacht. The upside is that your fellow crew members are likely to become your closest friends!
  • What do I do if I face problems on board a yacht? If you ever experience behaviour you believe to be a form of harassment, bullying, or discrimination, you should report it. If a problem or concern arises, the first thing to do is to discuss it with your head of department if you feel comfortable doing so. The department head should help to resolve the issue, but if unsuccessful, it may be forwarded to the Captain, who should handle it personally. A crew member may contact the management company or the “designated person ashore” (DPA) if the issue is still unresolved or if they are uncomfortable speaking to their heads of department or Captain. The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 enables all seafarers to make a confidential complaint to help find redress to an issue of concern. Various independent organisations can be contacted, such as the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) or Nautilus, a union for seafarers. Note: If you have further questions or are looking for additional information, please feel free to get in touch, and we’ll be happy to provide you with the best guidance we can.
  • What is a Green Crew member or Greenie? A Green Crew member or Greenie refers to a candidate searching for their first role on a yacht.
  • Is there a minimum age to work on yachts? Yes, the minimum age to work on yachts is 16. Night work for those under the age of 18 is not allowed. This is per the MLC 2006 Standard A1.1 Minimum age. Therefore if you are choosing this as a career, you need to be 18 years old or over.
  • Salaries on Yachts Yacht size isn't the only factor in crew salaries, the type of yacht (sail/motor), purpose (private/charter/both), and cruising schedule all matter. A candidate's profile will also be considered, such as experience, role, qualifications, and specialised skills. All of which impact salary negotiation. It is important to note that you should not offer to work for free to gain experience when joining the industry. You should be getting paid the day work rate.
  • As a Greenie, what salary can I expect? Entry-level salaries for yacht crew typically range from €/$ 2,500 per month or higher. Competition for entry-level positions is high, and salaries usually increase with experience.
  • Will I have an employment contract, and how long will it be for? Yacht crew jobs can be seasonal (May - October in Med, November-April in the Caribbean) or permanent long-term contracts. Commercial yachts must provide a SEA (Seaman's Employment Agreement), while private yachts are not required to. A separate contract may also cover standards of behaviour, absence and leave. We would like to point out the importance of having an employment contract when working on a yacht so it is advised to always request one. For more info on SEA, please refer to MLC 2006 Title 2 Regulation 2.1.
  • How will I find work? To find your first yacht job, be proactive and network. March and April in the Mediterranean and October in the US are key times for crew seeking work. Present yourself professionally, start early and follow up with crew agencies and yachting affiliates. Preparation is key - review what to focus on for interviews.
  • Am I allowed to Dockwalk? Port Authorities in the South of France confirmed that if the crew are legally present in the region, they are allowed to walk the docks.
  • Dock walking in the USA Only American passport or green card holders can legally seek employment in the US; dock walking is not advised for non-US nationals on a tourist visa or visa waiver.
  • Tips for Dockwalking Arrive at the docks at 8am Dress appropriately, we would suggest a nice polo, khaki, black or blue shorts/pants/skort and comfortable smart shoes Bring work clothes, business cards & CV Respect if the yacht is busy OWNERS/CHARTER, move on to the next boat (flowers on the table and cushions on display are a good indication) Approach boats at 8am-17.00, avoiding lunch break Don't disturb the crew on weekends Look on www.marinetraffic.com/vesselfinder.com to see which boats are in the harbour Check smaller marinas too Don't be afraid to ask the same boats often. Just because they don't have work today, doesn't mean they won't have it tomorrow or next week
  • You got day work! Arrive 10 mins early Take off your shoes at the end of the passerelle/gangway Clean up after yourself No mobile phone use. If you are expecting a call from a boat regarding a job position, explain this to the officer in charge When your work day is complete, meet up for a beer/coffee in the afternoon and network with fellow crew members
  • When applying for yacht jobs on social media, bear in mind the following... Ensure the Recruiter/Agency has a website and protection for personal information, is MLC Compliant and is on the list of Recruitment Agencies that are compliant. Before giving any personal information, do your homework on the recruiter and position. Helpful link: https://www.gov.uk/seafarer-working-and-living-rights
  • What should I wear for interviews? First impressions count, look smart and professional with natural makeup/freshly shaven, and remove sunglasses before you meet and greet with the yacht crew or your interviewer. Typically a polo shirt or a shirt, plain shorts, skorts (be careful of the length) or pants with boating shoes or smart footwear are worn.
  • Top Interviewing Tips Research the yacht Know your CV Be punctual and respectful Prepare for common questions Position yourself as the solution to the interviewer’s problem Convey positive energy & determination Ask questions to show enthusiasm & dedication Show respect, demonstrate your skills & experience Unfortunately, falsifying longevity, certification, experience, and employers is common in yachting. However, it is a criminal offence which carries repercussions for the offender, their colleagues and their employer.
  • Networking Networking is key in yachting. Make sure to explore the English-speaking bars and cafes in each yachting hub; the yachting industry is small, so present yourself professionally to build your network.
  • CV Suggestions A good CV is a critical component of any job application. It's the first thing a potential employer sees, and it's your chance to make a great first impression. A well-written CV can help you stand out from the competition and improve your chances of getting the job you want. Shorten and streamline your CV — the ideal length is two pages Utilise one font throughout your CV Include a professional photograph Include your contact information and key attributes Make your CV easy to read Spell-check your CV thoroughly Including references with contact details Keep your yachting CV up to date The Crew Coach offers a transformative package, which will help you produce the best version of your CV and cover letter!
  • I have tattoos, will this be a problem? Tattoos may be a problem when applying for certain yachts; some have a grooming and appearance code with a policy of no visible tattoos when wearing a crew uniform. However, times are changing, so many vessels in the industry allow for tattoos as long as they are not offensive. We recommend discussing this with your recruiter to determine on which yachts this may be an issue.
  • Is smoking allowed on yachts? In the yachting industry, it is generally not encouraged; each vessel decides if it is acceptable. It is advisable, to be honest about this habit before joining a yacht and with your recruiter.
  • Will I be tested for drugs on a yacht? Testing of new crew members for illegal drugs is becoming increasingly common, with tests occurring every 6 months, annually or without warning. The crew may also have to undergo a background check.
  • Social Media Use social networking wisely. Before interviews, review your public images & posts. Once employed, avoid posts about the yacht, location, or inappropriate images. Be sure to follow Facebook group rules when posting online.
  • Crew Agencies To maximise your chances of getting your first role, we recommend that you register with as many agencies as possible and also register with the yacht's online job boards, such as Yotspot.com and Yacrew.com When visiting a recruitment agency, arrive early, dress appropriately, and have a positive attitude. It's crucial to establish ties with recruiters that could endure the duration of your career. Building a professional relationship requires mutual respect; therefore, while being respectful, keep in mind that the recruiter should do the same for you.
  • What is the typical holiday entitlement on yachts? A minimum of 2.5 days of work per month of employment. On larger yachts, the crew can often work rotation. This can be discussed in detail when you are being put forward for a job by an agency or directly with the vessel.
  • Mandatory Certificates Crew, regardless of position, must complete STCW 95 (STCW 2010) Basic Safety Training and obtain a recognised Seafarers' medical certificate, best known as an ENG1, to be eligible to work as crew on a yacht.
  • Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers An STCW 95 (STCW 2010) course provides an introduction to safety at sea and includes 5 modules: Personal Survival Techniques Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Elementary First Aid Personal Safety and Social Responsibility Proficiency in Security Awareness The STCW 95 (STCW 2010) is valid for 5 years and a refresher course must be taken once this time has elapsed. An ENG1 medical certificate is valid for two years and must be kept current.
  • Passport A passport is the only acceptable form of identification for international travel. In order to gain entry into most countries, you will need a minimum validity of 6 months.
  • Seaman's Book A seaman’s discharge book is a full record of a seaman’s career experience and certification. These books are useful for logging sea service, seaman’s air ticket fares, a second form of identification and also visa applications. To apply for one of these you will first need to be employed within the maritime industry
  • The most common Visas Schengen A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa (90 days) that allows a person to travel to any country in the Schengen Area. To find out which countries are in this European zone and which nationalities require a Schengen visa, visit: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/who-needs-schengen-visa/. B1/B2 Visa Non-US citizens intending to join a yacht headed to a US port should apply for a B1B2 visa. It is recommended to apply through their country's U.S. Embassy or Consulate to expedite the process. Visit: http://www.usembassy.gov/ for more information. South African Crew South Africans without a European passport must obtain a Schengen visa before flying into Europe. To obtain a Schengen visa from South Africa, all applicants must go through a detailed application process. For more information please visit: www.schengenvisainfo.com/how-to-apply-schengen-visa/south-africa/ alternatively you can get in touch with: https://southafricanyachties.co.za/ who can assist you. Note: Crew from other countries such as Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe will also require Schengen visas if they do not hold European passports. Please contact your local embassies for further information on this. British Crew It is important that all UK citizens/crew in Schengen States become acquainted with the new rules due to Brexit and to make sure that the allowed 90-day period within every 180 days is not overstayed.
  • Vaccination Certificates Some yachts may require that their crew members have Covid-19 or other appropriate vaccinations for the regions in which the yacht will be operating.
  • Bank Accounts We recommend opening a smart online account with multiple currency options such as Revolut or Wise. If you prefer a more traditional banking option Lloyds and Standard have accounts specifically for Seafarers which usually require boat papers to open. You also have the option to simply use the bank of your choice in your home country.
  • Travelling to Yacht Hubs Arriving at any yacht crew hub for the first time can be overwhelming. To make the process easier, we have a few recommendations that could help your travel experience run smoothly. We suggest avoiding airport taxis, as they can be quite costly. Instead, take the bus at the airport terminal or go to the nearest train station. These options are economical, and you may even meet other yachties along the way. If public transport is unavailable or you are anxious to try the trains and buses for the first time, then Uber is a convenient option. We would recommend learning a few words of the native language of the country you are intending to travel to. It is a good way to show respect to the local people and their culture, and can make your travel experience more enjoyable. It could also help if you happen to get lost or need guidance. Don’t forget to use the Wifi on arrival at an airport, this is a great way to double check your onward travel details and to save on your phone bill. Check in advance with your current network provider to see what deals they have on roaming charges. Having an unlocked phone can also be advantageous, as this will allow you to use SIM cards from different providers. When you arrive at your chosen accommodation you will be able to ask for recommendations on which local sim cards are the best. It is a good idea to inform your bank of the locations you are travelling to and the dates and duration of your travels. This will allow you to continue using your credit/debit cards without fraud detection being triggered on your accounts, which can prevent you from using your cards. A bit of cash to hand is always a good idea too. Travelling to new countries is an adventure and you will be filled with excitement; however it is important that you remain vigilant. Make sure to keep your wallets safely tucked away and be aware of your surroundings. As you will learn in yachting - Safety never takes a day off!
  • Accommodation It is advisable that you reserve your accommodation as far in advance as possible as it can sometimes be difficult to find.
  • Crew Houses in Antibes Debbie's crew house The Crew Grapevine Crew Lighthouse Amma’s Crew House The Crew House The Glamorgan
  • Crew Houses In Palma The Boat House Palma The Yogi Crew House Hotel Colon Hostel Apuntadores Caimari Crew Accommodation

  • How to become a Yachtie

So you’re thinking about becoming a Yachtie?

You may have a friend or relative who already works in the industry, or you have watched TV programmes like Below Deck , you know working on a yacht is the right for you, but where do you start?

With the potential to earn great money, travel, and work with loads of like-minded people, it’s not surprising this job ticks a lot of boxes for many people.

Becoming a Yachtie and getting paid to work on luxury yachts may seem like a job and industry that only the elite can have access to, or it just seems too confusing to start.

However, with an understanding of the requirements, certification, and having some expectations of what job role you should be looking for, starting work as a Yachtie will not seem so daunting.

What is a Yachtie?

Before we go any further, let’s make sure we are all singing off the same hymn sheet.

A Yachtie is a broad term used to describe anyone who works on a yacht. More specifically, it has become the term for people working as yacht crew on superyachts.

A superyacht is a very large boat that is extremely luxurious and often owned by multi millionaires and billionaires.

These Yachties who work on superyachts hold a number of different positions. Most Yachties will start their superyacht career working as a Deckhand or Stewardess. With more experience and responsibilities, your role will change as you progress up the career ladder.

It’s worth noting there are other types of yachting and Yachties. The other kind of ‘Yachtie’ could describe those who hold their Yachtmaster qualification and have jobs like skipper charter boats.

Job roles for new Yachties

Yachties new to the industry (also known as ‘Green’ Yachties) will traditionally apply for entry levels roles, which are Yacht Deckhands or Yacht Stewardesses.

These are both very different jobs, so you need to be sure which one you want to do and start training for that career path.

Yacht Stewardess (Stew)

A Stewardess, or Steward , looks after the interior of the yacht. This means anything that happens inside the boat, you will be responsible for it.

Think of any job in the hospitality industry and then combine it into one role on a yacht, that is what you will be doing.

From making beds, doing the laundry, cleaning, serving food, and hosting dinner, you will do it all to a 5-star standard. Anything less than perfect, and your guests won’t be satisfied.

It’s the small things that make the difference between high standards and exceptional standards. You must have a great eye for detail and be able to make sure no stone is left unturned. Everything on board the ship must be 100% perfect at all times.

You will be reporting to Chief Stew, who will be your manager and give you your task list. After a good few seasons as a green Stewardess, you will have enough experience and confidence to apply for Chief Stewardess roles.

Yacht Deckhand

In contrast to the Stewardess role, Deckhands look after the exterior of the boat.

Predominantly a male role, Deckhands will do everything from general maintenance to cleaning the teak deck, looking after the toys (Jet Skis, etc.), and even driving the tenders.

Deckhands should know how a yacht operates, the basic terminology used onboard, how to tie knots, and loads and loads of enthusiasm.

Deckhands may also dip in and out of helping the Stewardesses, and it isn’t uncommon for Deckhands to give a hand during busy evening meal preparation and service.

5 steps to Becoming a Yachtie

With an understanding of the job roles available, you can now decide which one best suits you. With the right attitude, qualifications, and knowing where to look for work, becoming a Yachtie is achievable for anyone who wants it.

  • Have the right attitude
  • Pass an ENG1 medical
  • Complete STCW Basic Safety Training
  • Gain experience
  • Go to a superyacht marina

1. Have the right attitude

Along with gaining the correct qualifications to prove your competence, to become a Yachtie, you must have certain characteristics to thrive in this industry.

Yachties have to be well presented, articulate, know how to take orders, and be able to work hard, all with a smile and enthusiasm. You have to be able to work incredibly long hours, sometimes under stressful conditions, without losing your patience.

Having a job on a superyacht may sound glamorous, but if it’s your 10th day working in a row and you’ve got your head stuck down a toilet trying to clean it, you may want to think again. To become a Yachtie, you have to be happy with spending a lot of time away from home without seeing your friends and family. This may all seem obvious, but this situation does not suit everyone, and without careful consideration of the negatives, you will leave this industry quicker than when you arrived.

2. Pass ENG1 Medical

The first actionable step you need to take to become a Yachtie is gaining an ENG1 medical certificate. The ENG1 medical is an examination by an approved MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) Doctor to make sure you are fit and able to work at sea.

Every single person working at sea must have an ENG1 medical certificate , without this, you are not able to start working on superyachts. The examination will take around 45 minutes, during which the doctor will go through a checklist to make sure you have no underlying health conditions that may impact the safety of you or anyone else on board the ship.

The most common reason new yachties fail the ENG1 is colour blindness. Surprisingly many people can go through their whole life without knowing they are colour blind. However, on board a ship, this can have huge implications. If you cannot identify signals and lights correctly, it will be impossible for you to help navigate the ship in an emergency. Unfortunately, this means you cannot start work as a Yachtie.

3. Complete STCW Basic Safety Training

Another requirement for working at sea is completing STCW Basic Safety Training . Similar to the ENG1 you can only get a job on a yacht if you have the STCW certificate.

STCW stands for ‘Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping’. It is to make sure that all Seafarers have an understanding of what to do in an emergency and are aware of the procedures required.

STCW Courses are action-packed and quite a bit of fun. From fire fighting to sea survival, you will get stuck in learning, and learn loads of new skills.

4. Gain experience

If you are lucky enough to have a job offer on a superyacht, then having your ENG1 and STCW certificates will be enough.

Don’t worry if you haven’t already got a job offer, it’s quite normal to go through all these steps and not have a job lined up yet. If this is the case, gaining more experience and qualifications is a good idea to give you a competitive advantage over anyone else applying for the same job role.

This is achieved through signing up to a Deckhand or Stewardess Course. On these courses, you will get your standard STCW certificate and a list of extra qualifications demonstrating your competence, ability, and commitment to the industry.

Deckhands will learn how to drive a small yacht, engine maintenance, general yacht repair, and how to clean teak properly. Stewardesses will understand wine and how to serve it, the art of flower arranging, and how to drive a powerboat.

5. Go to a superyacht marina

After you have completed your superyacht training, now is the time to head out to France and look for work. Along with signing up to yacht crew recruitment agencies, going to one of the main superyacht marinas and handing out your CV to Captains is a great way to find work. This is known as dockwalking.

If you complete your Superyacht Course with us, you will have the option of signing up to our recruitment day in Antibes, France. We head out to France as a group, talk you through the process and offer you our industry contacts.

This is a great way to start your journey, and all our students find work in no time.

How much do Yachties make?

So you’ve heard you can make a good amount of money working on superyachts? Along with the travel, the great salary is why many people decide to become a Yachtie.

Like a job within any industry, salary varies. A Superyacht will agree on a crew salary budget with the owner of the yacht.

If you are just starting out, you can expect a salary of around €2,200 – €3,200 per month. However, the industry standard is €2,500 per month. Once you gain more experience and qualifications, your salary will increase.

When you look at the salary at face value, it looks great but not incredible, however when you are at sea, you have zero outgoings. Working on a yacht means you don’t have to pay rent, bills, or buy food which will save you heaps of money compared with working at home.

If you want to see the salaries of all yacht crew, check out our Salary Guide.

Do Yachties pay taxes?

Another reason why the salary is so appealing is that in most cases Yachties don’t have to pay tax.

This is a government scheme called the Seafarers Earning Deduction , and providing you are eligible, Yachties can keep 100% of their earnings.

To be able to apply for Seafarers Earning Deduction, you must be working on a ship outside of UK waters for a period of 365 days. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a whole year at once away from home, rather you can only apply once all the days you work on a yacht adds up to 365.

Being able to understand this tax scheme will be hugely beneficial before you start working on a Superyacht.

Below Deck: Dylan’s Photo With Cat Baugh Raises Questions About When He Became New Deckhand

  • Captain Kerry fired Jared Woodin in Below Deck season 11, and Dylan joined as the third Deckhand in episode 8.
  • Dylan recently shared a picture with Cat Baugh on Instagram Story, sparking confusion that she may have quit after his arrival.
  • Producers may have altered the timeline to create a better storyline, leaving fans to wonder what could have been with Dylan and Cat's friendship.

Below Deck star Dylan Pierre De Villiers’ photo with former cast member Cat Baugh creates confusion. Season 11 of the Bravo series has been quite interesting. It featured a new crew and various dramatic feuds. Most recently, the show reached its high point when Captain Kerry Titheradge let go of his Bosun. He fired Jared Woodin to give him time to fix his family issues. After Jared’s exit in episode 7, Captain Kerry made his Lead Deckhand, Ben Willoughby, the new Bosun. He then called Dylan to fill in and made him the third Deckhand.

Dylan joined Below Deck season 11 in episode 8. However, one of his recent pictures with Cat hints that producers may have altered the season’s timeline. In March 2024, Dylan posted a few Instagram Stories showing fans his best moments with the crew. One photo showed him beside the former Stew Cat, who left the boat before Dylan’s debut . Cat was a big part of Below Deck season 11. However, she couldn’t find her place on the yacht and decided to leave in episode 7. Dylan’s new photo hints that Cat may have quit after he joined the crew.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Why is dylan replacing jared woodin on below deck, captain kerry noticed that jared was unable to focus on his job.

Below Deck season 11 has featured many dramatic moments already. The season has been full of memorable scenes, like Barbie Pascual’s explosive rivalry with Fraser Olender and Ben’s surprising boatmance with Marie “Sunny” Marquis. However, the most unexpected moment didn’t happen until episode 7. It wasn’t until Captain Kerry realized that Jared was too distracted because of his daughter and wasn’t performing well . Captain Kerry made the right decision by letting Jared go and promoting Ben as the new Bosun. Since Ben’s sudden promotion left the crew with only two Deckhands, the Captain invited Dylan to take over the responsibility.

Dylan meeting Cat may not make sense, but it likely happened behind the scenes. Producers often try to give viewers a good storyline that’s easy to grasp and enjoy.

However, real events can be confusing and may not fit the show’s format well.

Dylan may have joined when Cat was still on the boat. However, the producers may have cut some of those scenes , so fans only focused on what was important. Jared and Cat’s exit was the center of discussion in episode 7. Therefore, producers may have felt that bringing Dylan later made more sense to the audience.

Dylan and Cat’s friendship would’ve been fun to watch. Cat always felt like she never belonged on the boat and quit the season amid her feud with Barbie. However, things may have turned out differently if Dylan and Cat had spent more time together . The third Deckhand and the former stew looked happy in their recent photo together. Dylan even called Cat an amazing human, hinting he was looking up to her. Viewers could’ve witnessed their friendship flourish if Cat hadn’t left the boat in Below Deck season 11, episode 7.

What Dylan Could Learn From Cat’s Exit

Dylan should focus on work & also build camaraderie with the crew.

While Cat has quit the show, Dylan can still learn much from her. The 24-year-old Cape Town resident is fairly new to the yacht, so he has the chance not to repeat Cat’s mistakes, which ultimately led to her departure. The former Stew’s biggest problem was her inability to bond with other crew members. Her constant fights with Barbie didn’t help either. If Dylan wants to make an impact on Below Deck and become Captain Kerry’s favorite, he must try to find his place on the yacht. He should have fun, build new relationships, and focus on his work.

9 Below Deck Franchise Deckhands Who Came Off As Lazy

What cat & dylan’s social media tells about their friendship, cat & dylan have become fast friends online.

Dylan and Cat’s social media activities suggest they’re still friends and support each other. While the former Stew is no longer on the show, she likes Dylan’s new photos and some old ones. Recently, she double-tapped on Dylan ’s weight-loss transformation post, where he flaunted his muscular body. The Deckhand is also returning the favor by liking Cat’s posts. The two crew members still follow each other on social media , suggesting they’re in touch. It’ll be interesting to see if Cat also posts a picture with Dylan sometime in the future.

Will Dylan & Cat Reunite?

Dylan & cat might return to another below deck spin-off.

Dylan and Cat didn’t get enough time to showcase their working relationship on Below Deck . However, the ship hasn’t sailed for a future reunion yet.

Cat may have left Below Deck but is still in the yachting business. Similarly, Dylan is thriving and seems like a skilled worker.

Cat and Dylan may run into each other sometime in the future. They may end up on the same spin-off, allowing them to impress viewers with their friendship and personal growth. Crew members often reunite in Below Deck . In 2023, Aesha Scott worked with João Franco, which helped them resolve past issues.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo, then streams the following day on Peacock.

Get connected, workers force funding for moscow metro.

By Boris Kagarlitsky and Renfrey Clarke

MOSCOW — During the Gorbachev years, the popular Russian journalist Alexander Kabakov published a science fiction story entitled The Non-Returnee, in which he described the horrors of life after perestroika. He depicted a Moscow in which normal life had disintegrated, there was shooting on the streets, and one part of the city was at war with another. The only thing that still worked properly was the city's underground rail system, the metro.

Residents of the Russian capital are simply incapable of imagining the metro shutting down. But it now seems that a continuation of neo-liberal "reforms" is fraught with just this danger.

In Soviet times, the building of metro systems — not just in Moscow, but throughout the country — was funded centrally. The necessary sums were simply not to be found in local budgets.

Now the metro systems have been handed over to local authorities. In Moscow there is one transport policy, another in St Petersburg, and in provincial centres yet another. The uniform fares and technical standards of former years are now things of the past. Every city tries to solve its own problems as best it can.

In the recently adopted federal budget, no provision was made for the centralised funding of urban underground rail systems. City treasury authorities also refused to finance work on building and maintaining metro lines.

The cost of these tasks has been put at 3.4 trillion roubles, close to US$1 billion dollars. An immense sum for an impoverished country, this is nevertheless somewhat less than the Russian government, according to heavily understated official figures, spent up to the end of January waging its war in Chechnya.

Meanwhile, the Moscow city authorities would not seem to be short of money either, when it comes to funding projects dear to the mayor and his acolytes. The Moscow administration is currently spending vast sums building a concrete replica of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, demolished in the 1930s. The city government is also outlaying a huge slice of its budget constructing an underground complex beneath the Manezh Square, and is now promising to erect the world's tallest skyscraper on the banks of the Moscow River.

Extremely dubious from the economic, architectural and environmental points of view, these projects have drawn numerous public protests. According to experts, none of them is likely to be fully realised. But none of them has encountered problems with finance.

If the funds needed for the Moscow metro were not found, commentators warned during January, all plans for developing the system further would have to be postponed. There would be no new lines or stations, and thousands of metro construction workers would lose their jobs. The cost of a metro journey, currently 400 roubles, would rise to 1800. There would be long intervals between trains, and one heavily used line would have to shut down entirely.

Executives of Metrostroy, the enterprise responsible for building and maintaining metro lines, warned that the escalators at many stations would have to be stopped, and that accidents underground would become a routine matter. For that matter, Muscovites would not be safe from accidents above ground either. Metro construction workers constantly pump water out of foundation pits and new tunnels. If this work were to cease, the soil would begin to subside and cave in.

At a conference in mid-January, the Metrostroy trade union resolved to call a strike for January 31 in protest against the disintegration of Moscow's underground rail transit system. The city authorities then declared that they would not allow the trade unions to force the redistribution of budget funds. It seemed that the prospect of the collapse of the Russian capital's transport system, and even the danger that people would be killed, troubled them much less than the need to observe "budget discipline".

Then the city authorities began to think again. Unlike most Russian workers, the people who build and run the Moscow metro are not without industrial muscle. The economy of the Russian capital depends on millions of workers being able to travel across the city each day by public transport. The cost to employers of even a brief metro stoppage would be enormous.

As they planned their action, the metro workers had a variety of effective tactics to choose from. If construction workers stopped pumping water from new tunnels, various existing lines would soon be flooded. Metro train drivers would not even have to strike; simply by following regulations and refusing to take out carriages with mechanical faults, they could cut the number of trains per hour to a handful.

The Moscow authorities had little reason to hope that the public would blame the workers rather than the city officials for the resulting chaos. Consequently, the prospect of strike action on the metro appears to have caused the city administration genuine alarm. This evidently penetrated to President Boris Yeltsin, for whom Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has been a vital political ally. Late in January, Yeltsin ordered the Russian government to come up with the funds needed to continue metro construction in several Russian cities, including the capital.

The future of Russia's metro systems is far from assured. Notoriously, funds budgeted or otherwise promised by the government are delivered late, and rarely in full. Despite Yeltsin's instructions, the new allocations for construction and maintenance will fall immediately under the gaze of cost-cutting zealots in the Finance Ministry.

Defenders of public transport, however, have the perfect answer to the financial hatchet-wielders: just take the money from the funds assigned for fighting the war in Chechnya.
