Historical:

By Lars Forsberg

In the way of background, BLACK WATCH (formerly EDLU II) was built in 1938 for the Schaefer family of Larchmont , NY. Construction took place in City Island at the Nevins Shipyard to the design of Sparkman and Stephens. This was the first design that S & S tank tested.

In 1941 the Schaefer family loaned the boat to the US Navy. She performed coastal security patrols (Corsair Fleet) during WW II. Winning a battle flag for scaring away German U boats off the coast of New England.

The Schaefer family donated the boat to Tabor Academy in 1947 and the boat was renamed TABOR BOY. Tabor Academy sold her in 1954 to Dr. George Brooks. Dr. Brooks owned her for 51 years and sailed her out of Larchmont Yacht Club.

In the Fall of 2005 several New York Yacht Club members came together to buy and restore BLACK WATCH. Everything possible has been accomplished to return her to first class condition with an emphasis on keeping her as original as possible including: replacing 2/3 of the bottom planking (installing all new thru hull seacocks) refastening the hull replacing the deck (rebuilding all of the deck furniture) replacing the wiring and electrical systems restoring/rebuilding the galley stove replacing the plumbing and fresh water systems (installing a shower) replacing the engine, shaft and propeller replacing the electronics (navigation) new heads new interior cushions/upholstery new standing and running rigging new sails new safety gear (life rafts, MOMs and PFDs)

S&S 34 is a 33 ′ 5 ″ / 10.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Swarbrick & Swarbrick and Aquafibre Ltd. starting in 1968.

Drawing of S&S 34

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

Of all the Sparkman and Stephens production yachts, the S&S 34 has become the most celebrated and perhaps the most successful; no small feat given Sparkman and Stephens’ status as one of the world’s most prestigious and long lived yacht design offices. At the time, designer Olin Stephens (1908-2008) said, “We hope and believe that the S&S 34 will make a good all-round boat, so as to demonstrate in a fairly small package that a good boat for offshore racing will also be a good boat for cruising.”

The words were quite prophetic, the S&S 34 had a successful career as an IOR racer before becoming the boat choice for single-handed record breaking, and eventually earning a great reputation as a blue water cruising boat. The boat has legendary seaworthiness and is a joy to sail being beautifully balanced and easy to single hand.

The S&S 34 was conceived shortly after Olin Stephens designed the 1967 and 1970 Americas Cup victor Intrepid which interestingly was the first 12 Metre to have a separate rudder and keel, an innovation the S&S 34 retained. The design was commissioned in 1968 by a British yachtsman by the name of Michael Winfield. His boat Morningtown was a 36 foot wooden one tonner designed for RORC racing, it impressed him so much he asked Sparkman and Stephens to prepare plans for a production boat. The S&S 34 was the result. The first boat produced was Morning Cloud which went on to win its class in the Sydney Hobart in 1969.

Stephens recounts Winfield, “He set up shop in England, I’m not sure how many he built, a dozen or so, but he was not an experienced boat builder, and he didn’t continue the work. The moulds and tooling were sold to some other builder there, and they built a few more there.”

Thus Winfield & Partners sold one of its two molds to a boatbuilding concern called Aquafibre who continued production until 1974. These hulls were often finished by other boatyards. Some boats found their way to the US where they were sold as the Palmer Johnson 34.

However it was in Australia that the S&S prospered. Downunder, the second set of Winfield molds were owned by Swarbrick Brother Yachts in Western Australia and between the years of 1969 – 1984 the three Swarbrick brothers Tom, Terry and Harley built 34 boats. The company eventually failed under bankruptcy and the molds were then sold to Maybrook Marine of NSW in 1986 who produced a further 4 boats over the following three years. The molds were then stored until 2003 when they found their way back to Western Australia by way of Mike Finn of Cottesloe Yachts, and under consultation with Sparkman and Stephens, boat production was adapted to use the latest in foam sandwich with vacuum infusion technology. These new “Constellation” class boats sold by Cottesloe Yachts were introduced in 2004 and are in current production, built by an all new Swarbrick company called Swarbrick and Swarbrick, owned by Tom Swarbrick’s son Glenn. These new boats are 25% lighter in the hull, are physically stiffer, and exhibit better impact strength.

In total, between 50 – 100 boats were built in the UK and Glenn Swarbricks reports 126 boats coming off the mould in Australia, of which 3 are of the latest “Constellation” class boats built with the latest foam-sandwich GRP technology.

Record Breaker

The boat raced successfully, quickly notching up race victories including future British prime minister Ted Heath’s Morning Cloud winning its class in the Sydney Hobart in 1969, before it became the boat of choice for solo circumnavigation attempts.

In 1981 Jon Sanders set out in his S&S 34 Perie Banou to complete a double-circumnavigation via Cape Horn. Sailing non-stop and solo he set 12 world records including longest distance sailed by any yacht, covering 48,510 miles and longest continuous voyage at sea totaling 419 days.

At age 17, David Dicks set out in 1996, to successfully claim the youngest to circumnavigate solo non-stop via Cape Horn, sailing his Mum’s S&S 34, Seaflight . Jesse Martin bettered the record in Lionheart , completing in 1999 aged 18. Inspired by Martin’s journey, Jessica Watson between 2009-2010 completed her own circumnavigation in Ella’s Pink Lady claiming the youngest solo unassisted at age sixteen (a record that held for only 20 months before Laura Dekker’s sailed home in her Ginn Fizz 37 in January 2012, also at age sixteen).

Boat Configuration

The boat has a remarkably modern shape for a design conceived in 1967. Looking down from above, the hull has a definite diamond shape with a fine bow and a narrow stern. The lines show a short waterline, long overhangs, generous tumblehome and for its era, a relatively high freeboard. Below the waterline is a short fin keel, with nearly all the ballast right in the middle of the boat and a skeg-hung rudder near the very aft. In all a very innovative configuration for its day.

The S&S 34 has a relatively tall masthead rig with a high aspect mainsail and an enlarged foresail, a configuration that became popular in racers in the years to come.

Down below, the headroom in the standard Australian cabin is 6′ 1″ which tapers an inch lower at the main bulkhead. There’s a sea-going berth located on the port aft quarter, with a navigation station slightly forward. To starboard is a the galley. Hanging lockers and a head is forward of the saloon and there is a rather tight V-berth at the forepeak with headroom of 5′ 10″.

MkII versions introduced improved hydrodynamic efficiencies with changes to the keel and rudder. The new keel was deeper with a straighter leading edge and an improved aerofoil section, while the rudder changed to a curved spade rudder hung from a smaller skeg.

Rigs came in two options; a cruising rig, and a racing rig, 2ft taller. In the British boats as well as the early Australian boats had the forestay terminated aft of the bow but on the later Australian boats it was taken right to the end of the bow. There were also variations in the rig during the 1980s, where some boats had a keel-stepped mast and others a deck stepped mast with a much larger cross-section.

The standard engine position is located amidships which provides optimal weight distribution helping seagoing motion, some of the later cruising focused boats, after the advent of lighter engines had the engines located under the cockpit.

The original deck moulds from Winfield had the deck recessed below the sheerline which created a toerail, and the cabin was shaped with a doghouse with a lower forward cabin trunk. When Swarbrick Bros acquired the moulds, they opted to build their own deck mould to improve forward headroom. This has resulted in the Australian boats having a flush cabin trunk, and the sharper observer will notice the deck has been raised flush to being level with the sheerline. Another minor change was a slightly truncated bow to fit the forestay tang.

Over 40 years on, the S&S 34 is still a quick boat. The hull is easily driven and by the numbers only 20hp is required to drive the boat at hull-speed, however owners report less in practice.

When the boat was introduced the S&S 34 was regarded as having exceptional speed to windward and in heavy weather. Even today the boat is hard to beat to windward in more than 10 knots, in fact owners have reported throwing in tacks of 80 degrees.

Her 50% ballast ratio results in a stiff boat, with the first reef thrown in at hefty 25 knots of wind. As the boat heels, the waterline length increases significantly; according to Olin’s design spec, the optimum angle of heel is 23.5 degrees, but don’t expect a dry ride, the S&S 34 is a wet boat like most Sparkman & Stephens designs of that era.

Buyer Notes

There is an active market for the S&S 34 in Australia, no doubt aided by an active owners association. It’s recommended prospective buyers contact them via their online discussion forum when researching. As of 2010, the asking price of boats is in the range of: 1968-1980 $55k-90k AUD

A new Constellation class boat from Cottlesloe Yachts and built by Swarbrick and Swarbrick , depending on fitout, is in the range of $226k-$330k AUD. Hull and deck kits start at $79k.

Sparkman & Stephens 30

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: November 1, 2013

The back story on the handsome Sparkman & Stephens 30 is pretty darn good. Originally designed in 1935 by S&S (founded by the legendary Olin Stephens), the custom 30-foot-6-inch yacht was called Babe and wreaked havoc in racing circles on the Florida waters where she was based. With a purposeful plumb bow, maximized waterline length, and plenty of sail area, she bore all the hallmarks of a classic Stephens design. In 2005, three years before he died, when Stephens was asked about his favorite all-time creations, “Number 97, Babe ” was one of the answers.

With that in mind, the present-day S&S design team went to work updating the boat to contemporary styling and standards. The wooden hull and deck gave way to a thoroughly modern laminate of E-glass and vinylester sandwiching a divinycell foam core. The full keel was replaced by a dynamic, 5-foot-6-inch fin with ballast bulb and a deep, separated, high-aspect rudder. For auxiliary power, a 14-horsepower Yanmar diesel was installed with a saildrive. Coupled with the boat’s singular, understated profile above the waterline, the result was sensational—a yacht that married Stephens’ timeless vision with state-of-the-art gear and technology.

Two things that didn’t change were the narrow, 8-foot-3-inch beam and the tiller steering. That combination, along with a few other notable features, earned CW BOTY judge Alvah Simon’s full attention. Though our test sail was conducted in just 8 to 10 knots of wind, the S&S 30 registered upwind speeds of more than 7.5 knots.

“I like the long, lean look and how such boats perform to windward,” said Simon. “Sometimes that results in a tender boat, but not here. Because the builders used lighter materials, the displacement is just 5,800 pounds. But the ballast ratio is 43 percent, which means almost half of that is in the keel. And this boat is just a joy to sail. It tacks like a ski carves. It has great maneuverability. And it’s certainly one of the best-looking boats out there. There’s beauty in simplicity.”

Unlike the other boats in the 2013 Boat of the Year sampling, the S&S 30 is best served as a dedicated daysailer. While there are basic accommodations below, the designers didn’t sacrifice the long cockpit for interior volume. At a fully equipped, sailaway price of $159,000, it isn’t an inexpensive boat, but compared with many of the “classic daysailers” on today’s market, it does represent good value.

On top of all that, it’s been touched by the genius of Olin Stephens. As they say in the commercials: priceless.

A Few S&S34 Achievements

We believe that the S&S 34 has completed more circumnavigations and set more world sailing records than any other production yacht. Just some of the achievements:

  • Member Jon Sanders AO, OBE, honoured in 1983 by the United States Institute of Navigation with their Superior Achievement Award. Sailed his S&S 34 Perie Banou around the world twice via Cape Horn, non stop and alone, to set 12 world records.
  • Member David Dicks when only 17 years old set the record for the youngest to sail alone and non stop around the world via Cape Horn. He sailed his mothers S&S34 Seaflight, starting from Fremantle, Western Australia.
  • Jesse Martin when 17 years old, also in an S&S 34, Lionheart, successfully followed David Dicks example, setting a new record for the youngest to sail non stop, alone and unassisted around the world via Cape Horn starting from Port Melbourne.
  • Jessica Watson when only 16 years old set a further record (unofficial as the category of “youngest” had been abolished as an official record), sailing non stop, alone and unassisted around the world via Cape Horn starting from Sydney, arriving back 3 days before her 17th birthday.
  • Jamie Dunross, quadriplegic, sailed solo around Australia in 2010, starting from Fremantle, Western Australia, being the first disabled sailor to do so and setting the record for the longest distance sailed solo by a quadriplegic.
  • Seven West Australian members have sailed their S&S 34 yachts around the world starting from Port Fremantle, more are on their way.

NEW AND DEMO BOATS AVAILABLE! The S&S 34 is still available brand new, and also currently there are almost new “demo” boats available at substantially reduced cost, all featuring the new foam sandwich, vaccum infused construction. 35 thoughts on “ Welcome to the S&S34 Association ”

Unfortunately, not all the boats launched are still sailing. Morning Tide has been lost at sea, possibly the first S&S34 anywhere to be lost at sea. The original S&S34 Morning Cloud, owned by Edward Heath, was lost from a mooring according to his book.

I believe that I own the sisters ip to Morning Cloud! Certainly built in same yard at same time and launched ’69 /70. She is named Morning Glory and has been badly neglected but is slowly coming back to decent shape. We use her every summer and hopefully only have 2 more serious winters work ahead.

Thanks Richard, If you want, you can send me the details of Morning Glory (just look up the other boats to see the sort of info we post) and I can make you a new page. I have only just upgraded the web site to Word Press software and am still learning, so need some practice! Regards, Simon

Hi, Just read your message, is the Morning Glory you own sail no K2819, used to belong to a Pembrokeshire Farmer called John Davies, Herbrandston Hall, if so I sailed and raced that yacht from the late 70’s until 1987, been all over in her, and yes she was neglected and battered but what a sea boat, I used to do my best to try and keep her sort of seaworthy(my own funds), she’ll be wanting new keel bolts by now, please take care of her, she’s special(took her crew safely through 79 Fastnet), really love to hear from you about her upkeep oh and when she’s properly trimmed her boom whistles.Kind Regards Bill James.

Hi Great site, just wondering have just purchased a 36 S&S do I qualify ??

Dear Stephen, Thanks for your comment, strictly speaking our website is specifically for S&S design no 1959, commonly known as the S&S 34. However, Association membership is open to those who do not own S&S 34s, although we won’t put anything other than an S&S 34 on our Yacht Directory. We have over the years had some members who own S&S 30s, and we have also assisted these and some owners of S&S 36s with various issues. Kind regards, Simon Torvaldsen, Webmaster

HI Simon Thanks for your reply, I understand, again thanks Stephen

Hi Stephen, I owned an S&S 36 for a couple of years. They are a great boat but different to the 34’s and 39’s as they were almost a hybrid Bruce Farr/S&S design with flatter bottom and less tumblehome. In my opinion they were better layout below but lacked the punchy drive to windward of the 34 & 9’s. I currently singlehand a 39 out of Fremantle and cannot find a boat that I would rather have for local conditions. The 36 was built by Prestige in ’88 and is at FSC . I believe there are more at SoPYC. Enjoy!

I am currently looking into a ’79 S&S 39 that is for sale online. Apparently it started its life as a racing boat, but has spent more recent years cruising. Does anyone have thoughts on problems and/or the ability of a ’39 as a cruising yacht, both for coastal but potentially in the longer run as a blue water passage making boat. Obviously the results of a marine survey telling of its hull condition will be important before I am prepared to make an offer. I can be contacted at [email protected] . Thanks Dave

Hello there. I am looking to purchase and join the S&S 34 family here in WA, and wondering if anyone has any historical or otherwise, info on Morning Swan which is currently for sale. I am considering a flight across Australia to take a look.

Best regards

Dear Jacqui, We have limited info on Morning Swan, which is hull no 43, built in 1977 for a RS Ryding of Nedlands, later noted to be sold to John Heydon in late 1980. I think it likely that the 2 boats listed on the Yacht Directory are the same one with different owners at different times. All the boats were well built and accident/unusual damage excepted, the main issues are those of age, ie wear and tear. Osmosis can be a potential problem with any boat 30+ years old, although issues with 34s have been relatively minor to date. However, even minor osmosis can be expensive to fix so worth checking. Bear in mind the interiors were often owner fitted and quality varies, in most cases expect a fair bit of work or a major refit. The price is good, so you have some room to manoeuvre. A total refit is possible, and the boats can be brought up to looking “as new” although there comes a point where you have done so much work you could have bought and fitted out a brand new one for not much more (they are available from new). Unless you plan to race, a “mk2 ” with the taller rig and spade rudder offers minimal advantage over the original design. you are welcome to email me direct if you get serious about it and have any further questions. They are fantastic boats to sail and there is a very active Association to support owners. Regards, Simon, webmaster

Hi,were they build new S&S34 old style?Iam in Perth WA thanks and regards

Any info on the S& S 34 ” Hell Fire”. I was a crewman aboard when Keith Turner was the SKIPPER..

Update on Meltemi. She has had a repaint, maintaining the original colours. The non-skid has yet to be done and I’ll post some photos when same plus some minor detailing is completed. I would very much appreciate any thoughts on a serious osmosis investigation on her hull.

Thanks Vaughan, The original colours were great so I am glad she is being brought back to “as new”. I think any good shipwright/marine fibreglass specialist could check the hull and give some ideas. The first thing is to get off the old antifouling and have a really good look at the bare hull. You can then decide if you just need limited treatment (ie tackling blisters individually) or whether you need to strip and replace the gelcoat (a lot more work). Either way you then finish off with a good layer of epoxy and put the antifouling back on. It’s all fixable, it just depends up how much work and therefore money is required. I have never heard of an S&S 34 with serious (ie extending into the fibreglass layup) osmosis, but I have heard of some boats having gelcoat replaced. I guess that’s not too bad after 40+ years afloat though. Regards, Simon

got a lovely ss 34 [western morning] bout a year ago, pleasure to sail.

Dear Alex, Congrats on your purchase of Western Morning, she is a very famous S&S 34, being the forerunner of all the rest (Cicely June was an English import). If you would like to give me your details, when you bought her, where she is berthed now etc and anything else you want published, I will update her web page for you. Kind regards, Simon

I note Western Morning is moored in Sydney and currently for sale at $20K. Hull and standing rigging look okay but interior in need of some serious work. I recall Jim Taylor skippering her on the west coast many decades ago. I owned Grey Goose II (formerly Kydalu) until 2003 when I relocated to Sydney and regret selling her to this day.

which shipyard build the S & S 34

can new S & S 34 be fitted with a Carbon composite Mast

with 2 spreaders.

can Goiot Portholes and hatches be to a new S & S 34

Goiot French portholes + Hatches makers

octo [email protected]

The S&S 34 is built by Swarbrick yachts in Western Australia. All the information is on the website. Any make or type of hatch and porthole can be fitted. A carbon mast can also be fitted. You can either copy the current mast in carbon and probably also lighten the top of the keel 100kg or so, or a whole new rig can be designed along with a modified keel. But I have to warn you that with the quality of construction it will be more expensive than a standard production boat like Beneteau or Jeanneau etc.

Regards, Simon

Does anybody know if a 1983 hull was hand laid glass

All the old boats were hand laid glass, only the new generation ones built after 2000 are vacuum infused. Simon

Hi – I have just purchased a S&S 34 called Reveillier. She is currently in Liverpool but I will be basing her in Cowes and doing quite a bit of restoration / refit work to her. How do I go about registering on this site and being able to use the forums for some advice?

Hi – I’m just about to paint the topsides and wondered if anyone had any measurements for where the waterline should sit? Very difficult to tell on the one I’ve just bought and I’m mid way through a major re-fit on her.

Hi Nicola, I know others on the website have responded to your queries. We would love to have an update from you on where you are with your refit. Hope all is going well. Kind regards, Vera & Andrew Waldby

Helllo, I was wondering if you can tell me what the difference is between and S&S 34 and a Prestige 34? Is the Prestige 34 an S&S design built by Prestige Yachts in Fremantle WA ? or are they different boats all together.

I am selling a Prestige 34 yacht for a client and not familiar with the build / design.

Hi James, The Prestige 34 was “inspired” by the Sparkman and Stephens style designs. It is not an official S&S design to my knowledge. They were designed by Swarbricks in Western Australia and have a winged keel in homage to Australia II. A different boat than an S&S34. Cheers, Ron

Can some one explain the difference between the late 1960’s &1970’s Tartan 34 & a S & S 34 of the same era? I am new the the world of S & S boats and there is a large difference in $$ but Tartans were designed by S & S and so are boats labeled S & S 34. Thank you, Morgan

Hi Morgan, A late response, but the Tartan 34 was designed with a centerboard and not a fin keel. It was mainly built in the US. The SS34 was designed by Sparkman and Stephens but firstly built in the UK and then in Australia. It was designed to optimise the old IOR rules. The Tartan was designed for CCA rules at the time. There are many articles on the internet if you have time to search. Cheers, Ron

Has anyone any information on blue morning s&s. 34

Hi Pat, Sorry we don’t seem to have a record of her. Good luck in finding out more. Cheers, Ron

I am looking to purchase a 34 in perth. Previously have owned a spacie 27. Any advice would be welcomed.

Hi Ryk, A late reply, the SS34 is a step up from the space sailor 27. More room inside, better performance if you are racing (if the boat is set up for it). It is an old design also, and on the heavy side, so good performance in winds 15 knots or more. Better to windward than downwind. Most on the market need some work before they are at their best again. They are solidly buiIt and most things can be fixed with time money and elbow grease in whatever combination you have. It is a Sparkman and Stephens design built mostly by Swarbricks not a Swarbricks design built by them. SS34’s still perform well on handicap in racing and can surprise in the right conditions. Good Luck in the hunt! Cheers, Ron

Hello Is the S and S 34 association and this site still active? regards Tony Hughes

Yes Tony we are. We just had our AGM

World’s coolest yachts: S&S 34

Yachting World

  • August 5, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month Don McIntyre nominates S&S 34

s&s yacht design

The most innovative all-time classic is the S&S 34. As a class they appeared in 1967, a year before the first Golden Globe Race, and Ted Heath [then leader of the opposition and later UK Prime minister], won the 1969 Sydney Hobart in his Morning Cloud .

About 200 have been built since, including 130 in Australia where they are loved to this day. Only one has ever been lost at sea and they are renowned for their heavy weather performance.

In 2008, when deciding on a boat to support 15-year-old Jessica Watson’s dream to become the youngest ever, solo non-stop unassisted sailor, the choice was easy.

Jon Saunders in Perie Banou twice circumnavigated solo breaking 12 world records. David Dicks as a 17-year-old took the family S&S 34 Seaflight around solo nonstop, followed shortly after by Jesse Martin, also 17, solo and unassisted on Lionheart . Jessica on Pink Lady [then unofficially took] the record from him, and it still stands today!

S&S 34 stats rating:

Top speed: 7 knots LOA: 10.23m Launched: 1967 Berths: 6 Price: £22,000 Adrenalin factor: 20%

Don McIntyre

Australian explorer Don McIntyre finished 2nd in class in the 1990/91 BOC Challenge solo around the world race, recreated the Mutiny on the Bounty, and resurrected the Golden Globe Race in 2018.

He is currently organising the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the original Whitbread, amongst other events.

Sparkman & Stephens 57 ft Sloop 1941 - Project

These details are provisional and may be amended

BROKER'S COMMENTS

Any Sparkman & Stephens design featured in Olin J Stephens' seminal design retrospective book “Lines” may be considered special. GESTURE - winner of the first Newport-Bermuda Race sailed after the second world war - is certainly so. Even for an Olin Stephens design she’s incredibly good looking, and is a proven race winner. Her relatively recent history has resulted in her becoming a project yacht, but what a project she will be! Mostly original features and relatively unaltered state contribute to fabulous authenticity. Combining that with her pre-1949 build date strongly suggests a potent performer on classic regatta circuits whilst her spacious accommodations will offer great comfort afloat.

PROVISIONAL

We believe GESTURE’s hull to be sound, and - although we’re cautious about claiming she’s going to be an easy boat to restore - the quality of original build and the opinion of a well known boatbuilder who has looked closely suggests that this might not be a keel-up restoration.

Together with her equally illustrious cousin BARUNA, the 57 ft sloop GESTURE - commissioned by Howard Fuller of the Fuller Brush Company - was described by Olin J Stephens in his autobiography as one of “the two most handsome boats that came out of our office”. Moreover he went on to say that yachts built by Quincy Adams were “among the handsomest of their time”. GESTURE is fast too: sailing against famous names including BARUNA, HIGHLAND LIGHT, ESCAPADE, LATIFA and BRILLIANT, she won the first post-war Bermuda Race in 1946 after the period of slumber enforced by her launching into the year the USA joined the second world war - 1941. During Fuller’s ownership she became not only one of the internationally best known ocean racers of her day (fourth in Class I, 1953 Fastnet Race; missing out winning the RORC’s prestigious Britannia Trophy by three seconds on corrected time), but also one of the most modern: she is believed to be the first ocean racing yacht to be fitted with an extruded aluminium mast, made - possibly by Fuller Brush Company - from Alcoa Aluminum in the 1940s.

  2. Sparkman & Stephens

Olin Stephens II (1908-2008), was one of the most influential and prolific designers of the 20th century. After a short apprenticeship working on six meters, he joined forces with Drake Sparkman in 1930 to form the legendary S&S firm. (From the beginning, the importance and influence of his brother, Rod Stephens, can not be overstated.) The success of 'Dorade', commissioned by his father ...

  3. Sparkman & Stephens

During the war, Sparkman & Stephens was heavily involved with the design of craft for the military. When racing for the Americas cup resumed 26 years later, his pre-war 12 meter 'Vim' was barely eliminated in the defender trials of 1958. The S&S designed 'Freedom' (1980) was the last 12-Meter to successfully defend the Cup.
