2) Step-by-Step Guide: How to Sail a Hobie 16 Cat Effectively

Title: Mastering the Art of Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat – A Step-by-Step Guide to Unleash Your Full Potential

Introduction: Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat effectively requires a combination of skill, technique, and an innate connection with the elements. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor looking to enhance your performance or a beginner embarking on your first adventure, this step-by-step guide will equip you with the knowledge to confidently navigate your way through the waters. So, buckle up and get ready to unleash the true potential of your Hobie 16 Cat!

1. Preparing for Success: Before setting sail on your Hobie 16 Cat, it’s crucial to ensure that both you and your equipment are fully prepared.

– Start by inspecting your catamaran thoroughly. Check for any visible signs of damage, loose fittings, or worn-out sails. Ensuring everything is in order will minimize potential problems during the journey. – Grasp an understanding of wind conditions by consulting weather forecasts beforehand. This knowledge will help you better plan your route and make necessary adjustments. – Gather all essential safety equipment such as life jackets, flares, navigation lights, and communication devices. Safety should always be prioritized when venturing into open waters.

2. Rigging Like a Pro: Efficient rigging is key to maximizing speed and maneuverability on a Hobie 16 Cat.

– Begin by carefully attaching and tensioning the trampoline netting. A well-tightened trampoline provides stability while allowing crew members to move effortlessly across its surface. – Next, hoist the mainsail using proper techniques. Ensure it is securely fastened at both the tack and clew points while keeping it oriented correctly according to wind direction. – Hoisting jib sails requires precision too; remember that they should complement but not overpower the mainsail’s powers. – Finally, secure all lines neatly on the boat and eliminate any unnecessary clutter. An organized deck allows for quick adjustments and minimizes potential entanglements while sailing.

3. Understanding Sail Trim: Optimal sail trim is vital to harnessing the maximum potential of your Hobie 16 Cat’s speed and handling.

– Adjust the traveler line on your catamaran, which controls side-to-side movement of the main sheeting point, allowing you to balance power with control. – Properly tension the jib sheets to achieve balanced airflow between the jib and mainsail. This balance ensures optimal lift and reduces drag resulting in improved overall performance. – Familiarize yourself with different wind angles and their respective sail settings. Practicing sailing close-hauled, beam reach, broad reach, and running will help you adapt to varying wind conditions efficiently. – Continuously monitor telltales on both sails; they are your guides to achieving optimal aerodynamics. Keep them streaming smoothly by adjusting sail trim accordingly.

4. Navigating through Tacks and Jibes: Perfecting these essential maneuvers is crucial as they allow you to change direction effectively without losing precious momentum or control.

– When tacking (turning your bow through the wind), communicate clearly with your crew members as proper coordination is essential. Steer confidently into the wind while crew members actively cross over in harmony. – Mastering a smooth jibe (turning downwind) involves an orchestrated motion where crew members simultaneously shift weight towards leeward while easing out the mainsheet gradually. – Practice tacking and jibing repeatedly until these maneuvers become second nature; this will improve your overall sailing experience.

5. Enhancing Performance under Challenging Conditions: Sailing isn’t always smooth-sailing! Adapting to adverse weather conditions can make all the difference in maintaining control during challenging moments.

– In high winds, depowering techniques become indispensable – ease off on sails by adjusting halyards, outhauls, and traveler lines. This will reduce the sail area while maintaining stability. – As waves intensify, learn to anticipate and gracefully navigate through them. Raise your weight slightly to allow the bows to cut smoothly through the water rather than crash into waves head-on. – In gusty conditions, maintain an engaged core and balanced posture. Anticipate sudden shifts in wind strength and adjust sail trim accordingly to prevent overpowering or stalling.

Conclusion: Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat effectively is an art that combines technique, skill, and adaptability. By following this comprehensive guide, you’ll be equipped with the tools necessary to conquer the waters confidently. So hop on board your Hobie 16 Cat, embrace the elements around you, and let your sailing prowess shine brightly as you embark on unforgettable seafaring adventures!

4) Unlocking the Secrets of the Hobie 16 Cat: Tips and Tricks Revealed

If you’re a sailing enthusiast or simply someone who loves being out on the water, chances are you’ve heard of the iconic Hobie 16 Catamaran. This sleek and agile boat has been capturing the hearts of sailors for decades, offering thrilling experiences and unmatched excitement. But what sets this catamaran apart from its counterparts? In this blog post, we’ll delve into the secrets of the Hobie 16 Cat–uncovering tips and tricks that will take your sailing game to new heights.

First things first, let’s talk about why the Hobie 16 Cat is so beloved among sailors worldwide. Its design combines elegance with functionality, providing you both speed and stability on the water. The Hobie 16 features two hulls connected by a trampoline platform, enabling it to effortlessly glide through waves while maintaining excellent balance. This unique configuration not only offers enhanced maneuverability but also makes it possible for one person to captain the boat alone or team up with a crew member for an exhilarating sailing experience.

Now that we understand the essence of this impressive catamaran let’s dive into some insider tips that will help you maximize your Hobie 16 experience:

1) Rigging Techniques: Proper rigging is paramount when it comes to sailing any boat successfully, and the Hobie 16 is no exception. Make sure to master rigging techniques such as attaching the mast step securely, setting up your sails properly for optimal performance under different wind conditions, and tensioning each line appropriately. A well-rigged catamaran can make all the difference in terms of speed and maneuverability.

2) Taming Wind Gusts: Sailing enthusiasts know that dealing with unpredictable gusts of wind can be challenging. To navigate windy conditions while keeping full control over your Hobie 16, try adjusting your sail trim by easing out or sheeting in accordingly. Additionally, pay attention to weight distribution; shifting your crew’s position can help stabilize the boat and prevent capsizing, even when faced with sudden gusts.

3) Mastering the Art of Tacking: One of the most crucial maneuvers in sailing is tacking, which involves turning your boat into the wind without losing momentum. On a Hobie 16 Cat, a well-executed tack can make all the difference between gaining ground and falling behind. Learn to anticipate wind shifts, communicate with your crew effectively, and practice coordinated movements to ensure smooth and efficient tacks. Remember, practice makes perfect!

4) Downwind Sailing Techniques: While upwind performance is important, downwind sailing on a Hobie 16 can be particularly thrilling. To harness the power of the wind while maintaining control, utilize techniques such as wing-on-wing sailing (a method where you set both sails out to opposite sides for maximum utilization of wind), hand steering to adjust your course accurately, and using body weight shifts to optimize balance and stability.

5) Maintenance Matters: Lastly, ensuring proper maintenance of your Hobie 16 Catamaran is essential for its longevity and optimum performance. Regularly inspect all components such as rigging lines, trampoline mesh integrity, mast fittings, rudder system functionality, and sail condition. Invest time in cleaning and storing your boat correctly to prevent any wear or damage that could compromise its efficiency.

With these tips and tricks up your sleeve, you’ll soon be unlocking the full potential of your Hobie 16 Catamaran adventures. Whether you’re engaging in friendly regattas or simply enjoying leisurely sails with friends and family trust that these insights will give you an edge over other sailors.

So get out there, embrace the thrill that comes with navigating through waves on this iconic catamaran–and let its secrets reveal themselves as you conquer new horizons!

We sure hope so because we’re about to spill the beans on all the essential equipment you’ll need for a successful voyage. So grab your sailor’s hat and buckle up, because this is going to be one wild ride!

1. Life Jackets: Safety first, my friends! Before setting sail on any watercraft, it’s crucial to ensure everyone on board has a well-fitting life jacket. While the Hobie 16 Cat is inherently stable, unexpected situations can arise, and having proper flotation devices can make all the difference.

2. Sunscreen: Oh, the unforgiving sun! Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is paramount during any outdoor activity—especially when cruising along on the open waters. So don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen with high SPF before setting sail. Trust us; lobster red skin isn’t exactly fashionable.

3. Waterproof Bag: The sea is a treacherous mistress, and water splashes are inevitable during your catamaran adventure. Keep your valuables safe and dry by stashing them in sturdy waterproof bags or containers onboard. This way, you won’t have to mourn over soggy smartphones or damp wallets.

4. Snacks & Hydration: Sailing can be quite an energy-consuming endeavor—no wonder sailors always talk about rum rations! Be sure to pack some delicious snacks that provide sustenance throughout your adventure at sea. Don’t forget plenty of hydration as well; after all, salty air tends to make our throats as parched as a desert.

5. Nautical Tools & Spares: While we don’t expect our beloved Hobie 16 Cat to break down mid-sail (she’s built like a tank, after all), it’s always wise to carry some basic nautical tools and spare parts. The ocean can be unpredictable, and having the ability to fix minor issues on the fly will keep your journey smooth sailing.

6. Emergency Equipment: Safety should always remain at the forefront of any adventurer’s mind. Take along emergency equipment such as a whistle, flashlight, and a first aid kit that caters specifically to maritime mishaps. In case an unexpected storm arises or you find yourself in an unfortunate situation, these items could prove invaluable.

Small Boat Spotlight - Hobie 16

Small Boat Spotlight : The Everlasting Hobie 16

By: Pat Reynolds Learn To Sail , Sailboats , Sailing Fun

When you stop and think about what types of boats are most responsible for luring people into the wonderful world of sailing the Hobie 16 has got to be in the top three on the list. For children of the 1970s and 80s this sexy little catamaran seemed to be sitting on a trailer in every other backyard.

What most simply call the Hobie 16 is an iconic sailboat that is considered by many to be the most popular catamaran in the world. In the beginning, the H16 was marketed as more than some ordinary sailboat that could be easily trailered, rigged and beached. Instead Hobie Alter put forth the idea that to sail this boat was to be part of a lifestyle – the “ Hobie way of life .” Instead of making the pitch that it was a fast fun little boat that could make your summer a little brighter, Alter suggested that sailing a Hobiecat was a reflection of an energized youth with a dash of good-natured rebellion.

There have been over 135,000 of these boats produced since 1969 and they are the second largest boat fleet in existence. The H16 is simple to rig (especially on a beach) and pretty easy to sail, although capsizing is par for the course and regarded by some as fun. Once launched, the full batten main and relatively lightweight construction (320 pounds) makes the boat quite fast and responsive. The Hobie folks state the max speed is nearly 24-knots and there are plenty of Hobie sailors who will agree and verify. At speeds like that you can bet whoever is sailing the boat will be utilizing another element Hobie sailors love – the dual trapeze setup they are equipped with. In 10-15 knots of breeze, skipper and crew can hike their entire bodies out on the wires simultaneously, suspended above the water and as the hull begins to rise, life becomes very sweet. Any beach cat sailor will tell you that sailing along at 15-knots, hiked out and flying a hull is one of the most blissful feelings known to man.

The other very positive aspect of the Hobie 16 is the cost of entry. It remains one of the more inexpensive roads into the world of sailing. A 2017 Hobie 16 is just over $11,000 and that’s ready to sail. Lots of sailboats have a base price and then silly little extras like… sails!! And if the used market is explored, a ready to sail H16 can be picked up for under $1,000, which is pretty incredible.

And lastly, Hobie 16s are also versatile. They’re small enough to throw in the backyard next to the garage without causing marital dismay but once rigged and ready, they’re hearty enough to do some serious coastal sailing. While many Hobie sailors head out for a few hours for some low-key albeit amped up daysailing, others like to actually get in the surf, hit the adrenaline button and use the boat as a surfboard.

It’s a design that has definitely stood the test of time (for good reason) and one that is positive for the sport. The cost to fun ratio is right where we like to see it, so if you don’t have a boat and don’t want to spend a fortune – grab a Hobie 16 and getcha sail on!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Model Getaway

16 ft. Hobie Cat Getaway - literally like new! The Getaway is designed to sail easily and safely with the roller furling jib and boomless main. The unique hull design delivers the performance Hobies are know for – even flying a hull for the thrill seeksers out there. This boat was purchased August, 2014 to get our teenagers into sailing. It was only used during the two weeks we were on Cape Cod (approximately 5 times). Unfortunately, tubing and wakeboarding hold more allure, so we are switching over to a small powerboat. Sails are the Seabreeze color scheme. Being the brand new 2014 model, it includes all the upgrades that come with the new re-design including the improved rudders. The boat comes well equipped but we added: the Wing Seats ($1100 option); Trapeze wires and quick height adjusters with competition trap rings; composite hiking stick (long) with a stainless quick release, and a 2:1 downhaul. 2014 Load Rite Sailboat trailer (with mast support) included in the package. This trailer is equipped with larger rims and upgraded tires for better highway performance as well as bearing buddies for easy maintenance. It also has a rear mast bracket to make trailering that much easier and secure. The trailer has touched water only twice in its life – one launch and one boat removal. 16' Prindle Sailboat

16' Prindle Sailboat

Commerce Twp, Michigan

Up for sale is my 16' Prindle. The main sale is multi colored and in very good shape considering this is not a new boat, the jib is solid Yellow. The Boats pontoons are in very good shape with no soft spots. The Trailer is Aluminum and also in good shape and has bearing buddies installed. I have not sailed in years but have sailed extensively on both this prindle and other sailboats. The 16 Prindle handles the heavy wind far better than a hobie and very importantly can be self righted when/if you flip it by just one person. This point can not be overstated you dont want to be stranded in the middle of the lake because you are sailing an 18' It will take a weekend to clean up and to do the intisl setup. On a prindle each rudder is raised and lowered manually and independantly of the other by two different lines, for a total of four four foot lines. These lines are about three to four feet long each. These lines are available at lowes or home depot in the rope section and cost a total under $10.00. It is easy with just a coat hanger to re-line your rudders in about 20 minutes and is part of good maitenance to do on who evers prindle you adopt. Besides this just a good overall cleaning and waxing much like you would your car. The trailer has Michigan plates but the tabs are expired. I contacted secretary of state today and was told that boats under 20' in Michigan do not have title but just a bill of sale, please feel free to confirm this independantly with the Michigan Secretary of State office. All the other ropes and block along with the main and jib sails and the boom, Mast and cables, have been stored inside and are in excellent condition. I am no longer including the trampoline so you will have to buy a new one. This is good because new trampolines are so much better than the original trampolines that came with these boats. The reason is you tend to slide across these tramps very often as you move from port to starboard under the boom and vice versa and nothing is worse than the original trampoline for this or a modern trampoline with burs/small inperfections. You also want a trampoline that will be smooth to slide across without any obstacles in the mat ie Straps, Gromets, Rope and in my opinion rope pockets. See Aromic Tarp Website for 16' Prindle Mats. http://www.atomictarp.com/catamaran_trampolines?id=catamaran_trampolines&bas=&categories=4 The prindle is at my home on commerce lake in Commerce Township, MI. It is loaded on its aluminum trailer in my driveway. $650 firm 248-266-2045 or 248-894-6387 Emailing is the easiest way to reach me, I check my email often thru out the day and can respond to any questions quickly.

Boat Profile

More than fifty years old and as popular as ever

From Issue   February 2023

I was raised in the tropical paradise of Jamaica and was just a child the first time my father took me sailing on a Hobie 16. There was something magical about the way it glided through the water while I relaxed on the trampoline, joyful under the summer sun. My favorite part was being refreshed by the cool ocean spray when my dad steered into the waves.

catamaran hobie 16

Rules established by the International Hobie Class Association keep all Hobie 16s equal, so sailing skills alone determine which crews are the fastest.

In the 1950s, Hobie Alter, designer of the Hobie 16, made a name for himself in surfboards and was the first to make them with fiberglass over foam cores. When he turned his attention to sailing, the results were no less revolutionary. He introduced his 14′ sailing catamaran, the Hobie 14, in 1967. Created as a fun, affordable, and lightweight boat, it was dubbed “the people’s boat.” Within a few short years of development, the Hobie 14 was quickly adopted into the racing scene around the world and became the largest class of catamaran. The Hobie 16 was introduced in 1971, and now, over a half-century later, it is the most popular of all the Hobies. More than 135,000 Hobie 16s have been sold, the design was enshrined in the now defunct American Sailboat Hall of Fame, and it thrives as a world-renowned racing class.

Almost identical to the original 14, the Hobie 16 is built for two people and is equipped with a second sail and dual trapezes so both crew members can hang their weight well outboard. It is easy to rig, launch, and sail. With its 148.2-sq-ft main and 55.1-sq-ft jib (both fully battened), and its lightweight construction coming in at 320 lbs, the Hobie 16 can reach speeds approaching 24 knots in ideal conditions. Cutting neatly through waves upwind and surfing them downwind, it thrives in breezy and wavy conditions.

catamaran hobie 16

The asymmetrical hulls—straight and vertical on the outboard side and curved inboard—create lift, and as the windward hull rises, the lift generated by the leeward hull diminishes the leeway made by the catamaran.

The Hobie 16 has asymmetrical hulls that are nearly straight on the outside and curved on the inside so that the downwind hull, the one most deeply immersed, provides lift to windward. The shape of the hulls eliminates the need for daggerboards and meets one of the designer’s primary requirements: the ability to sail directly off and onto the beach. It’s one of the many reasons the boat is loved by so many.

catamaran hobie 16

The anodized aluminum mast rotates and has a teardrop cross section, features that improve the airflow across the mainsail.

W hen setting up the Hobie 16, the most difficult task is raising the mast. While this can be done singlehandedly, I have never been successful. A crewmate, and even a third pair of hands, makes it easy. Once the mast is up, it is stabilized laterally by the shrouds while the forestay is connected to the bow bridle. Fortunately, after doing this process once, it is easy to master.

When rigging the sails, I usually start with the jib, attaching the tack to the chainplate connected to the bridle between the bows of the boat. I then attach the jibhead to the halyard with a bowline, clip the five hanks to the forestay, and thread the jibsheets through the travelers and cam cleats. After attaching the halyard shackle to the mainsail, hoisting the main is fairly straightforward but does benefit from a second set of hands to feed the luff into the mast track. Each rudder connects to the stern with a pin and a split ring.

catamaran hobie 16

The Hobie 16’s ability to be sailed off the beach was a major factor in its rise of popularity.

The light weight of the Hobie 16 means that I can singlehandedly push and pull it across a beach. I will typically hoist the sails on land, push the boat into the water, jump on, and as soon as I’m aboard, I’m sailing. Returning, I drop the sails while in the surf and then pull the boat onto the beach. Hobie hulls can handle rough landings, and many people sail their boats directly onto the beach—even while sheeted in and driving hard. The 16 can also easily be launched from a trailer at a ramp.

U nderway, the Hobie 16 is very sensitive to tiller movement, and oversteering may often lead to an accidental tack or jibe, or send you straight into irons. However, it’s easy to get out of irons, even when singlehanded, by backing the sail and directing the tiller to the same side as the sail until the bow turns away. The boat is then quick to pick up speed again.

For recreational sailors, the trampoline provides comfort and relaxation, and for advanced sailors it prevents bruises during high-speed tacks and jibes. While spray rarely comes over the bows because of the way they cut through the water, do not expect to stay dry because the trampoline does not offer protection from spray coming directly from underneath.

catamaran hobie 16

The Hobie 16 is designed for a crew of two. Even with both crew members on the trapezes, it’s possible to fly a hull. Sailing with one hull out of the water eliminates the drag created by the wetted surface and increases the potential for speed.

Going fast and flying a hull, as you might expect, can lead to a capsize. I’ve never capsized a Hobie without getting dropped into the water, so be prepared to go for a swim. But righting a Hobie 16 is easier than it might seem, indeed, the boat will frequently right itself because the trampoline acts like a sail when the wind blows under it, allowing a crew and skipper to just climb back aboard. On the rare occasion a Hobie 16 does not right itself, I first loop the righting line (which is attached to the base of the mast) around the windward hull. Then my crew and I stand on the leeward hull, lean back, and pull the boat upright. Because the Hobie 16 is designed to be crewed by two people, when sailed solo on breezy days it is quick to capsize and difficult to right alone. Regardless of the occasional dip in the ocean, every Hobie 16 sailor, from beginner to racer, exhilarates in the rush of excitement that comes from sailing this fun-packed multihull.

Because the Hobie 16 can reach very high speeds, especially on windy days, the boat can be overpowered and reefing the sail is important. Reefing the mainsail is easiest when done on the beach. Five reefing lines are required: a tack downhaul leads from the lowest eye on the luff to the eye at the base of the mast, a clew outhaul leads from an eye on the leech down to the boom, and three reefpoints secure the excess sail around the boom.

catamaran hobie 16

When the wind speed reaches about 12 knots, both crew members often take to the trapezes.

W hile the Hobie 16 is popular with thrill-seekers, it is mainly used as a summer recreational boat. Even on quiet days, the Hobie sails smoothly, especially when using light-wind techniques such as shifting crew weight forward to reduce drag or to leeward to heel the boat and angle the mast so gravity can give the sails their airfoil shapes.

Ultimately the Hobie 16 is a versatile boat that can be easily rigged for brief outings, day trips, or multiday adventures loaded up with camping gear and food. Despite being only 16′ 7″ in length, it is surprisingly spacious and, although designed for a crew of two, can comfortably accommodate three adults or a family of four. It is a great boat for family outings with kids; on glassy days the trampoline is a very comfortable place to take a nap or gaze into the water at the marine life. Indeed, if you’re not into racing, bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and snacks and just enjoy cruising under the summer sun.

Spent many a summer on a Hobie 16. My buddy and I would go sailing when there were wind warnings in effect and no one else was out on the lake. We’d both get out on the traps with the upwind hull barely out of the water and got going so fast the rudders literally would sing. But bury that leeward hull in a wave and before you know it you were in the drink. Fast fun boat. The sailing equivalent of a sports car. These days I’ll occasionally rent one of the plastic Hobie’s while on vacation and they are still a hoot.

Nice one, Zoe!!

Some of the best sleep I’ve ever had is beach camping and sleeping on a Hobie’s trampoline.

The International Hobie 16

Introduced as the bigger Hobie 14, the 16 revolutionized the multihull scene when it first appeared in 1971. Forty plus years later, this boat continues to attract great sailors. Powerful enough for the world champion, yet forgiving enough for the novice, the 16 can be characterized as the Laser of the catamaran world. It’s a dual trapeze boat for two or more crew that can be sailed in strong winds.

Boat Weight

The initial class rule minimum boat weight was 315 lb., but actual weights were much heavier. In the mid-’70s, the class rule minimum weight was changed to 340 lb. to more accurately reflect the weight of the boats. In 1984, a new manuafacturing process allowed a significant weight reduction to 320 lb. and the class rules were changed accordingly. Actual boat weights crept up during the late ’80s into the 340 lb range again, but since about 1994, the boats have been manufactured closer to the class minimum. New boats are built to tight standards today and all weigh within 10 lbs (usually lighter) than the 320 lb. class minimum.

Crew Weight

The class minimum crew weight is 285 lbs. combined, however youth and women’s events use a lower weight of 250 lbs. and 260 lbs. respectively. For open racing it’s generally accepted that the optimum crew weight is 285-310 lbs.

Sailing Characteristics

The Hobie 16 sails well in all conditions but excells in breezy and wavy conditions. Originally designed to sail in the surf right off the beach, the 16 still is one of the best catamarans on the market for sailing off the beach. The boat powers up in about 12 knots of breeze where most teams will begin double trapezing upwind. Downwind in waves, it’s all about surfing and the 16 loves to surf waves. In breezes over 15 knots the 16 provides an exciting ride. Similar to the Laser, there aren’t many strings to pull but the boat continues to challenge even long time Hobie sailors.

Production Changes

While incremental changes have been introduced over production, a 1972 Hobie 16 will look very similar to a new one. Changes over the years have improved and standardized boat production around the world. New boats today are built with better hardware, hull weights are tightly controlled and a new boat needs only a few racing modifications. In recent years, the major changes have been the introduction of cross bars where the traveler tracks are inegrated into the cross bar, hardware upgrades and carbon fiber EPO2 rudders. The sails went through an upgrade in late 1990’s and are now made from higher quality cloth. The jib was also recut in 2000 to allow more mast rake. Since mast rake is a critical component of upwind performance, there have been many tweaks to all sorts of parts, from the mast step to the mainsheet boom bail, to the shroud length to increase mast rake.

Modifications for Racing

A 6:1 downhaul system, an adjustable jib halyard system and fiberglass or carbon fiber rudders are common racing modifications. A 6:1 low profile mainsheet system has been standard equipment for many years but if your boat has the older 5:1 ssytem this is the first thing you need to replace. The Comptip mast has been standard equipment for over 25 years and is required for racing.

Special Needs

Like most Hobies, the 16 is very robust, however, there are some a few things that will extend the competitive life. Water left in the hulls is not good for longevity of the hulls. Keeping the boat clean and covered when not in use will not only keep your boat looking nice but will help keep everything working. Rudder systems need special attention to maintain the locking cams in good working order. Carbon fiber rudders need extra-special care. They must be kept out of sunlight when not in use and you should avoid all bottom contact.

What to Look Out For in a Used Boat

Hobie 16’s have been in production for 40 years and it is still common for find used boats on the market from the early 1970’s. As a general rule, “you get what you pay for” when shopping for a used boat. As a starting point when looking at a used boat you want to ensure it is a ‘complete boat’ with all it’s parts. Replacing major components that are missing (i.e. sails or mast) can be costly. Delamination of the hulls is the most common issue seen in very old hulls. Delamination leads to a wavy or spongy softness to the fiberglass. This is a serious problem that can lead to catestrophic hull failure if not addressed. Small areas of delamination can be repaired but a hull that has delamination over it’s entire length is generally not repairable. All wires and standing rigging should be carefully inspected and replaced if more than a few years old.

If you intend to purchase a used boat to be used for racing, you will want a 320 lbs. boat. You should look for something manufactured since 1993. Fiberglass or carbon fiber rudders are a plus but can be obtained separately. Sail condition is a consideration. Typically the racing life of the sails is about five years but some replace their sails more frequently. The new style jib cut was introduced in 2000 and will allow you to carry more mast rake.

Wing Seats for the Hobie 16:

In 2021, SitnSail is back!

The company was on hold since 2009, due to Patrick's health problems. Unfortunately, the illness took him away. We will always thank him for his ingenuity and dedication to SitnSail.

But life must go on! And SitnSail is to good to disappear. That is why we decided to bring back the SitnSail Wings on market.

A new production is launched, for delivery in 2022. This new batch will be available for both consumers and retailers.

Are you interested? Send us an email to [email protected] to reserve yours!

Breathe new life into your Hobie 16. No need to buy a Hobie Getaway just to have wings!

Exclusive on the market from SitnSail, are catamaran wings for your Hobie 16. These are like "Wing Seats" that you sit on. They attach to your trampoline frame using our supplied stainless steel bracket hardware. This is a legitimate product made by a Hobie enthusiast for other Hobie enthusiasts to enjoy. They are not available anywhere else, inside or outside of the U.S. We are a new company, SitnSail, and are offering our revolutionary new product for the popular Hobie 16 market. Now you can have a pair on your boat and begin sailing in total comfort, while remaining high and dry!

This product was developed over the course of one year...

SitnSail is born from the passion of Patrick , and Raymond, . Both were owner of Hobie 16s and sailed them frequently in the Long Beach harbor in California. In 2021, Nicolas took over the company. Nicolas, from France, is also an engineer and passionate Hobie 16 sailor.

SitnSail wings went through several concept designs and revisions before ultimately becoming the outstanding product that they are today. Patrick has always expressed a desire to transform the Hobie 16 into a more comfortable ride. Sitting on the trampoline for hours can lead to fatigue, sore legs, and backaches for many cat sailors.

He originally tried many different types of materials and configurations for the wings. Ultimately the decision was made to use reinforced fiberglass for the wing seat because it is flexible, durable, lightweight, and waterproof. For the support arms, we opted for aluminum pipe. Stainless steel was chosen as the material best suited for the mounting hardware, nuts, and bolts. All of these materials are resistant to fresh and salt water. In addition, we decided to coat the wing "seats" using a durable, high-impact vinyl polymer for better adhesion so slipping would not occur while sitting or trapezing. The coating comes in black only. The aluminum support arms are powder coated to resist corrosion. This method is superior to paint. From the beginning, it was Patrick's constant attention to quality and detail give these SitnSail wings a professional quality.

During the testing phase, some problems emerged. We didn't know if trapezing was possible while standing on top of the wings, or if the leeward wing would drag in the water when "Flying the Hull". We had to figure out what the proper "rake" of the wings should be so that no leeward wing dragging would occur while flying high. Also, we needed to design a way to make sure the wings stayed put even if capsizing occurred, which led to our patented design utilizing a hooked-latch assembly to attach the wings directly to the trampoline frame, unlike other "factory" wings which mount directly into the fiberglass hulls causing stress fractures, or "spider webbing" fissures.

Although trapezing is a thrill, they were designed primarily for a comfortable seating position. Now you can finally have a comfortable ride with the wife or kids, and no more tiring seating positions. I have a pair on my boat, and I love them for leaning, sitting, and trapezeing. These wings are incredibly comfortable while sailing at a fast clip or just cruising the lake or harbor with a friend.  Doubling-up is not a problem at all. No longer will you get pains in your knees or backaches from sitting on the trampoline. It makes for a much more inviting, comfortable sailing experience.

In addition to all of this, you can also lean back on them if you wish to sit on the trampoline. It's like having a backrest to lean on with your legs stretched out. During the testing phase we kept finding more and more uses for these wings. We feel like we really came up with rock solid design that will transform your Hobie into a much more satisfying boat and will be more appealing to anybody willing to try them. Give them a try and add yourself to the dozens of other satisfied SitnSail customers.
