The world famous Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has just announced the completion of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda clubhouse , which is the final chapter in the development of YCCS Virgin Gorda .  This brand new state-of-the-art marina and yacht club is a new chapter for Yacht Club Costa Smeralda , one of the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs, founded by the Aga Khan in Porto Cervo in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia.

For a generation, Costa Smeralda has been famous in the international sailing and yachting worlds for its top level of sailing events and its unparalleled dedication to services and amenities.  The company is hoping that the brand new Costa Smeralda Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda will be the yacht club of choice for anyone sailing or yachting in the Caribbean.

 The conference to present the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s sporting calendar and the competitive programme of the Young Azzurra team took place this morning. For the first time, the traditional YCCS event was held online, with a live stream from the Azzurra Lounge at the Club’s Porto Cervo headquarters which, in addition to members, was open to all journalists, guests and supporters wishing to take part. A recording of the event will remain available on the YCCS YouTube channel.

The press conference, moderated by Giovanni Bruno of Sky Sports, began with a greeting from Princess Zahra Aga Khan, President of the YCCS Board of Directors, who reflected on the extent to which the pandemic has led us to reconsider our role with respect to nature, and echoed everyone’s desire to return to sailing. “There are undoubtedly many lessons that we need to learn from this crisis, including re-evaluate a more sustainable way of living with the sea, and in particular the sea of Sardinia. The resumption of activities at the YCCS will be governed by respect for the environment and, obviously, our passion for sailing.”

This was followed by an address from Commodore Michael Illbruck: “Being here today, taking part in our first digital conference represents a positive response to what we have experienced.” commented Commodore Illbruck. “We are opening the doors of the YCCS to everyone for this annual event, even if only digitally, which bears testament to our confidence in the resumption of activities, confirming the Club’s commitment and determination. We are motivated and optimistic with regard to the sporting events scheduled, in which we see a return to a new normal.

This is a signal for sailing in the Mediterranean, for Sardinia and for the territory, including the community that we are a part of. The YCCS is a solid reality, largely thanks to the support of the Aga Khan family, but also thanks to the support of all our institutional partners: Rolex, Allianz, the new entry Jaguar Land Rover, to whom we extend a warm welcome, and all those who share our common values and lend their support in the organisation of our regattas.”

After providing support at the end of April for Livorno’s Regata dell’Accademia Navale, with the fleet transiting a gate in Porto Cervo, the 2021 season of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will open with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta from 1 to 5 June. New to the event for this year is a multihulls category, which offers excellent prospects for growth. Among the 14 entries to date, 6 of the yachts hail from the Southern Wind shipyard, and the regatta will in fact mark the 30th anniversary of the Southern Wind Trophy and Rendezvous. The superyacht fleet will once again sail around the islands of the archipelago of La Maddalena, which act as natural course markers, in a truly unique setting.

The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, like all the races scheduled, will take place in compliance with the Covid-19 safety protocols issued by the Italian government, the Region of Sardinia and the Italian Sailing Federation, in addition to the supplementary procedures that the YCCS has developed.

A new event will also be hosted from 21 to 26 June, in the form of the second leg of the Swan Sardinia Challenge – The Nations League, the circuit that Finnish shipyard Swan dedicates to its one-design classes: the Swan 45, ClubSwan 42, ClubSwan 50 and the latest ClubSwan 36 model. Racing will be on windward-leeward courses to put the competitive capabilities of the boats and their crews to the test.

The first half of July will be dedicated to the Persico 69F Cup, a regatta which will also see Young Azzurra on the starting line. The Grand Prix 2.1 will take place from 5 to 10 July, with the Grand Prix 2.2 following from 12 to 17 July.

Events in July continue with the Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 from 23 to 25, before the Members Championship takes place aboard J/70 craft on 7 and 8 August, with a warm-up practice on the boats scheduled for the previous weekend. At the end of August, the YCCS will support the organisers of the Palermo – Porto Cervo – Montecarlo offshore race, as the fleet transits through a gate in front of the Club’s Observatory.

From 5 to 11 September, the YCCS will host one of the events for which it is renowned worldwide – the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, now in its 31st edition, which will see a large and varied fleet of yachts over 60 feet compete on the waters of the Costa Smeralda.

At the end of September, from 24 to 26, the Invitational Smeralda 888 will see the return of the elegant one-design hull conceived by German Frers as a YCCS members’ boat. The season concludes with the now traditional Sailing Champions League, which from 7 to 10 October will see the best international club teams doing battle on the YCCS fleet of one-design J/70s to decide the overall European winner of the 2021 season.

During the press conference the Young Azzurra sporting programme was also presented – an initiative launched in August 2020 to participate in the Youth America’s Cup in Auckland which was then cancelled due to the pandemic. The Youth Foiling Gold Cup was then organised as a substitute event on board the Persico 69F, the boat used as a training platform for the Youth America’s Cup. The Gold Cup takes place over three legs, with the same regulations applied. The first leg, held in March in Gaeta, saw Young Azzurra claim second place overall. In parallel, the Young Azzurra team is also taking part in the Persico 69F Cup. The crew of Young Azzurra is made up of skipper Ettore Botticini, flight controller Federico Colaninno, and Francesca Bergamo and Erica Ratti, who alternate in the role of mainsail trimmer. Coach Gabriele Bruni, trainer of the Italian mixed catamaran foiling Olympic team, has also been trying out a new formation in training, with the two girls crewing with the skipper.

The Young Azzurra project not only represents the sporting DNA of the YCCS, but reinforces the Club’s commitment to marine conservation, with the entire team acting as Ambassadors for the One Ocean Foundation and its initiatives.

The development of new generations of sailors is a priority for the YCCS, and while Young Azzurra represents an opportunity for sporting and professional growth at the highest level, the YCCS sailing school has always been open to all. This year, four new boats are on offer: two replacement Laser Picos and two brand new RS Quests, an ideal training dinghy.

His Highness the Aga Khan saw the potential of Sardinia ’s Costa Smeralda as a yachting hub in the 1950’s, and the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club was established as a result of his vision.

Businessman, spiritual leader and philanthropist His Highness the Aga Khan was presented with the Legacy Award at the World Superyacht Awards 2019 in London on May 18.

He was honoured for his discovery and development of the Costa Smeralda region, near Porto Cervo , on the north east portion of Sardinia in the sixties. 

By introducing the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, he is largely responsible for turning this part of Sardinia into the superyacht magnet it is today. 

He wanted the area to become an exclusive destination for elite travellers, while still maintaining its natural beauty and heritage.

Together with Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, the Aga Khan established the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on 1967 as a sporting centre for fellow sailing enthusiasts looking for a slice of Italian paradise.

Since its inception, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has organised a number of international regattas which it went on to host in later years, making the Aga Khan a worthy winner of this prestigious accolade.

The Aga Khan is also noted for his role in the establishment of the Costa Smeralda Consortium in 1962.

Costa Smeralda's Regatta Circuit

This year, the hotly-anticipated Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2019 will be back at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on June 3, marking an important date in the calendar for the Mediterranean yacht charter season.

Over five days, thrilling races will take place around La Maddalena archipelago, which sits just a few kilometres from Sardinia. This scattering of islands creates around 50 fast-paced racing circuits, each of which are complemented by excellent sailing conditions and stunning scenery.

Visiting the Emerald Coast

Those on a superyacht vacation in Italy shouldn’t miss the chance to explore Sardinia, and discover everything this idyllic island has to offer.

On the north eastern tip, Porto Cervo has earned a reputation for its sailing, superyachts and luxury living. It regularly pulls in luxury charter yachts with its countless designer fashion houses, upscale restaurants and chic beach clubs.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has been synonymous with racing at the highest international level for decades and has been host to many world championship regattas as well as the Maxi Worlds. It was the birthplace of Azzurra’s Amercia’s Cup campaign, and now runs the Azzurra TP52 sailing team.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is well known for the Sardinia Cup International Team event, and in 2011 it played host to the TP52 World Championships.

For those anxious for an update on Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) information about what is happening with the rebuild and when the resort be operational has been extremely hard to come by. Here are four things we know or have heard to date:

1 – No Website Infomation: The YCCS website only offers the following message, “We apologize for any inconvenience, however due to damage caused by Hurricane Irma, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda will remain closed until further notice.”

2 – No Communication: They last posted on Facebook on December 24, 2017 after Irma.

3 – No Evidence of Rebuilding: The photo above taken in late March, 2019 shows no evidence of any progress in the rebuilding as the YCCS Clubhouse looks exactly the same as it does in the post Irma photo below. More importantly the docks are gone!

4 – Projected Opening Date: According to a December 24, 2018 article in the BVI News no exact date was given for the re-opening of YCCS. In the article, Premier Dr D Orlando Smith was quoted as saying, “Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, more commonly known as YCCS, are also slated to resume operations shortly.” This statement leaves us very confused.

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Anchorage on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Marina is possible on the South shore of the Virgin Gorda Island. There is a T-shaped quay which is capable of accommodating various luxurious charter yachts of up to 100m length and 9m drought. The two sides of the large pontoon allow mooring of up to 30 charter yachts. The Yacht Club in the British Virgin Islands is a subsidiary of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda located in Cervo Porto, Italy.

General Information

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was established in 1967. It is situated in Cervo Porto of northern Sardinia. The purpose of this club to build a non-profit sporting association for sailing enthusiasts. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) Clubhouse was built in the 1970s. YCCS Clubhouse is located in Virgin Gorda and provides a place for boat accommodation, various dock services and refreshments. It also provides concierge who shall take care of your bookings etc. There is an infinity pool which provides a pleasant view of the North Sound . The restaurant serves Italian and Caribbean cuisines and provisioning for visiting charter yachts is available.

This Restaurant offers a fine dining experience for the visitors. It serves local Caribbean and Italian cuisines, as well as international cuisines, are offered. The restaurant provides an exceptional view of the British Virgin Island. Their menus offer fresh fish dishes, salads and steaks.

The Bar Aqua is a waterside restaurant. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their menu varies from a selection of pizzas, fresh salad and handmade burgers which made of Bison from the grasslands of US.

Places of Interest

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers a place of relaxation with its pool, water games and refreshments. The Virgin Gorda island provides a variety of activities. There are a few diving sites which are nearby the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Also North Sound bay provides a hub for watersports, such as kayaking, snorkeling and kite surfing, with a range of bars and restaurants. The Baths, one of the most popular attractions among BVI yacht charter tourists , can be visited from YCCS.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda , fondato nel 1967 dal Presidente S.A. l'Aga Khan, è rinomato per l’organizzazione di regate internazionali per superyacht, maxi yacht e imbarcazioni one-design. Lo Yacht Club organizza regate durante la stagione estiva e offre ai propri soci, ai loro ospiti e agli armatori servizi pregiati presso la struttura di Porto Cervo. Lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ha promosso sfide a livello internazionale con Azzurra, il primo scafo italiano a partecipare alla America's Cup nel 1983, divenuto un simbolo dello sport italiano. Nel 1992, lo YCCS ha inoltre varato il motoryacht Destriero, che detiene tuttora il record di traversata atlantica a motore ottenuto quell'anno. Il 2017 ha segnato per lo YCCS il cinquantesimo anniversario della sua fondazione, un importante traguardo celebrato con il lancio di un progetto ambientale nato per promuovere la preservazione dell’ambiente marino e divenuto oggi una Fondazione, la One Ocean Foundation.
