The superyacht group chairman, martin redmayne, outlines the themes and key buyer audience to expect in amsterdam this november….

The Superyacht Forum Live is right around the corner. The theme for our flagship event in Amsterdam from 14-16 November 2022 marks an evolution of the superyacht industry’s premier educational and networking platform. As well as a return to pre-COVID delegate numbers, it is also the 30th anniversary of The Superyacht Forum. At this crucial juncture, the industry mandate is clear: Evolve or Repeat.

As we head into show season we also look ahead to Amsterdam and preview the 2022 programme. Additionally, we highlight the key buying audience that historically attends each year, and why you should join us and the key stakeholders from across the superyacht sector this November. As can be seen below,  within the 800 delegates that attend the three days, there is an unparalleled, diverse level of representation from across the key buying audience.

After 30 years at the helm, The Superyacht Group Chairman, Martin Redmayne, outlines the vision for this year's milestone event: "Evolve or Repeat – the time has come for a real Industrial Evolution and after 30 years of delivering The Superyacht Forum, the largest and most important meeting of industry leaders on the calendar, we will deliver a new style of programme with actions and projects that will start in Amsterdam, but continue throughout the year as workshops and focus groups, that are designed to change the way we do what we do.

Our mission is to stop the market from making the same mistakes or just doing what we always do. As we have highlighted, the definition of insanity, “is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.” This year’s programme will bring together truly inspirational keynote speakers to challenge our industry to truly evolve for the future and do things differently."

Key highlights and questions we will discuss and debate:

·       A Captains Wake Up Call, if we don’t change now, things are going to get ugly.

·       A Yacht Builders Wake Up Call, why are we wasting so much time, money and materials?

·       Converting ships into global fun platforms, is this a seriously good alternative?

·       Fleet fires and burning batteries, what’s going wrong?

·       Why are we still building yachts with conventional power?

·       Is the paint and refit industry being properly protected, an insurance debate?

·       Can we really learn from the past and start doing things differently?

·       The Energy Conundrum, what really makes sense in our quest for Zero?

·       Will the Red Sea become part of a new Milk Run?

·       Training and developing the human capital that’s fit for purpose.

·       30 Future Thinking Ideas – Blue Sky Brainstorms.

"Plus, we have six incredible, visionary keynote sessions from technology experts outside of yachting, in the world of aerospace, automotive, energy, architecture and future materials. These sessions, the names behind the topics and more details on the dynamic changes we have made to The Superyacht Forum Live, will be announced over the coming weeks." Concludes Redmayne.

The final, full programme will be published online on the 1st of September 2022.

TSF Live 2022 will be an event unlike any other as we celebrate 30 years and look excitedly towards 30 more.

This year’s 20th anniversary Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) is set to start today, on Monday, November 17. The event will bring three days of dynamic speakers, passionate debate, as well as unparalleled networking between key industry players.

Here are ten reasons why to attend Global Superyacht Forum:

10: Experience METS

GSF is held in collaboration with the Marine Equipment Trade Show ( METS ) and the SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP) every November. Registered delegates of GSF are granted full access to METS throughout the forum, ensuring a comprehensive week of industry networking, education and knowledge sharing of every sector in the superyacht market.

9: Learn about and understand the industry’s latest innovations and new thinking

Day two at the Global Superyacht Forum aims to shake the industry up with an interactive session. In ‘Conspicuous Contribution and Going From Great to Good’ Rob Henderson of UNStudios and Mark Vernooij from THNK want to revolutionise the business practices of all attendees. A new feature at this year’s Global Superyacht Forum is the Innov*8 session, a quick-fire presentation from eight different companies, showcasing their latest ideas and innovative concepts in just four minutes. Attendees of Tim Delaney’s keynote session “Thinking that Transforms, Change that Inspires” will procure an inside glimpse into the marketing maestro’s mind.

8. Get real insight into where the market is heading from a new build, refit, brokerage and operation perspective

The first session of the Global Superyacht Forum sees expert Roberto Giorgi take to the stage for ‘The Shipping Forecast’. Monday’s ‘Breaking Brokerage’ session brings together four key industry figures to dissect and debate the luxury wealth industry. Bob Atkinson, Partner of B Capital; Simon Cardiff a consultant for Issues in Superyacht Ownership; Marcello Maggi, founder of MMYB and Laurent Perignon will join Martin H. Redmayne on stage. The final session of the Global Superyacht Forum 2014 on Wednesday 19 November, is the ‘BV80 Case Study’ with Patrick Coote and Peer Ostendorff of Blohm+Voss , Peder Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison, directors of Eidsgaard Design and Andrew Thomas of Inaria discussing, the research, creative design, marketing and presentation of mega yacht BV80 .

7: Connect with brand new contacts, who will have the time to talk to you

A vital part of attending forums and conferences, in addition to keeping up with trends and learning from the industry’s top players, is the networking opportunities. Meeting new clients, suppliers and key industry executives to benefit you and your business is the backbone of the Global Superyacht Forum (GSF).

6. Enjoy incredible hospitality delivered by the world-renowned Superyacht Events team

The Global Superyacht Forum is organised each year by the Superyacht Events team. This year, the Superyacht Events’ Flamingos have organised a forum worthy of a 20-year celebration. With inspiring keynote speakers, powerful programme content and top delegates all attending Amsterdam next week, GSF demonstrates the team’s ability to put on the must-attend event in the yachting calendar.

5. Be part of 19 workshops and focus groups that will solve key issues and propose real change

In addition to powerful keynote sessions and extensive networking opportunities, delegates at the Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) are given the chance to discuss current trends and issues within the superyacht market in an intimate, closed-door environment with other delegates and top players within the industry. These focus groups and workshops, following their hugely successful addition to the programme in 2013, encourage candid discussion amongst all attendees and a collaborative effort to affect change in the superyacht world.

4: Meet the industry’s top Shipyards, Yacht Managers and Designers

The fourth reason to attend this year’s Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) is the largest shipyards, high profile yacht managers and top designers who have already signed up and will be in Amsterdam this week. The stature of GSF in the yachting calendar grows each year as key decision makers in the superyacht market join together to network, analyse and change the future of the industry.

3. Engage with over 300 senior decision-makers that advise owners globally

The Global Superyacht Forum (GSF) is a must-attend event for industry professionals who wish to connect with owners and their advisers. Over 300 Project Managers, Captains and Owner Representatives are all attending this year’s Global Superyacht Forum to network with suppliers and engage with GSF delegates.

2. Have your say in the debates & keynotes designed to grow the Industry

The theme of this year’s Global Superyacht Forum is an Interactive Experience for all attendees. During the three days, every delegate is actively encouraged to contribute to discussions, debate the facts and question one another to ensure every voice in the superyacht industry is heard.

1. Experience the incredible networking with 500 Industry Leader & your peers

Global Superyacht Forum Show Report 2021

Craig Allen

The Global Superyacht Forum opened positively, with an emphasis on ‘Superyacht 2030’ (an industry wide mission to reduce the carbon footprint of yachting) along with a discussion around the future of superyachts. Craig Allen covers the key themes from the event.

COP26 and other climate change topics were central to discussions throughout the Forum, with thought given to how the UHNWIs of the future will act in respect of their carbon footprint. The question remains, 'what can yachts do to improve their presence on the ocean and help our planet, while still being the leisure product they are designed to be?'

'Superyacht 2030'

The carbon footprint of superyachts must be reduced, not by choice, but because new or existing legislation demands it. The shipping and aviation sectors are implementing new technologies into their products to reduce fuel consumption and carbon footprint by 2030 and there was much debate about how the yachting industry can adapt and learn from these sectors. Methods of propulsion such as biofuels, LNG, methanol, solar and battery power to increase efficiency and move reliance away from fossil fuels were discussed and workshops were formed so that groups could gather and share ideas.

Separately, discussions addressed the positive impact that Covid-19 had on the wealth and purchase profile of HNWIs. It is believed that the number of UHNWIs in the $30m bracket has increased by 27-30% in the past two years and this is likely to continue to rise.

While the increased wealth of this target market combined with low interest rates has resulted in a surge in demand for superyachts (despite shipping and raw material costs tripling), unfortunately the supply chain is struggling to keep up. This problem extends to other luxury assets too, such as second homes and private jets. (In fact, second-hand aircraft are selling at 5-15% above asking price). However, there is limited understanding of the taxation considerations, particularly due to changing tax rules in certain jurisdictions, and this is causing issues for owners who are unknowingly failing to comply. This is an area that requires specialist care when considering a high-end purchase.

Supply and demand

Ship builders are working hard to meet high demands. However, achieving the deadlines of current build contracts while costs are escalating is naturally affecting profit margins. On top of this, some raw materials are becoming scarce. Even some of the aluminium components required to bond the metal are becoming harder to source, which is affecting the production line.

It was noted that much consolidation of shipyards and brokerage supply chain is taking place. MarineMax’s recent acquisitions of Fraser Yachts and Northrop & Johnson has positioned them as a powerhouse in the yachting industry. It is likely that other small yards will also merge to share the cost of new processes, technologies and sustainable materials, providing them with the competitiveness they need to stay in the game.

With regards to marinas, they will need to play their part with new technologies and supplying sustainable fuels to the yachts of the future, as well as reducing their carbon footprint and ensuring responsible disposal of material, whether its recyclable or hazardous waste. A spokesperson from D-Marin advised that they have introduced solar energy to their marinas in Turkey, in order to reduce their reliance on grid networks. Marina representatives appear keen to provide sustainable fuels to yachts. However, with many yachts still using fossils fuels, the demand will need to increase before investment is made on a large scale. Understanding the costs associated with the infrastructure and training requirements is key, and shipyards implementing these new fuels will need to work alongside the marinas to achieve their shared goal.

Safety on board yachts was another topic of discussion and it certainly ruffled a few feathers within the insurance sector when the fact that private yachts under 500GT are not regulated or built to the same standards as commercial yachts of under 500GT was highlighted. Both Class and Flag states believed their standards are adequate and that any changes should be through the manufacturing industry as a whole.

Crew challenges

The availability of crew is becoming an issue within the superyacht sector. This is possibly attributed to the limited hours of rest, living conditions and the amount of work involved, especially on smaller crewed yachts, where crew have more than one role to perform. Other sectors, such as hospitality, are perhaps perceived as more attractive. Moreover, shows like ‘Below Deck’ are not helping to promote crewing in a positive light.

In summary, the industry is booming and demand for superyachts is greater than ever. However, changes must be made to reduce emissions, make yachting greener and meet the expectations of the younger, more technologically and environmentally minded generation of UHNWIs in addition to promoting crewing as a career of choice to ensure that supply meets demand.

Superyachts: the global superyacht fleet numbers at the Captains’ Forum

global superyacht forum

Boat sizes increase while the market shows stable outlooks till 2022.

A constantly growing fleet, their ships’ size ever-increasing, and a trend that not only shows a market upswing but growth signals and stability . This data is the starting point to understand what challenges and opportunities refit and aftersales companies are going to face in the future.

This was the main subject discussed at The Superyacht Captains’ Forum , held during YARE (Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience) , the international meetup now at its ninth edition, completely dedicated to the yachting industry and organized at the “Il Principino” convention center in Viareggio till Saturday 23 March.

Over 350 guests were attending and were given a complete summary of what’s happening in the refit world. On stage, renowned personality in the nautical world Martin H. Redmayne , The Superyacht media group journalist and editor.

Vincenzo Poerio , YARE and Tuscany’s nautical, technology and port district president started the Forum with his speech, where he highlighted some important key points of the sector: “New buildings contracts have been signed till 2022 and the boats all have a bigger length” . He also confirmed that “ in the international theatre our Italian shipyards are the protagonists”. Sure enough, according to the rankings, eight of the best worldwide shipbuilders are Italian ( Benetti, Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Azimut, Overmarine, Baglietto, Perini Navi and Codecasa ).

Looking at the data of the last ten years, exposed this morning at the Forum, the main numbers are about the global fleet’s exponential growth. From 3906 crafts in 2009 to 5646 in 2019 and 5789 are expected for 2022. About the length of those crafts, the increasing size of the commissions is evident: in 2009 there were 2626 (30 – 40 mt), 1055 (40 – 60 mt), 183 (60 – 90 mt), 42 (over 90 mt); in 2019 there are 3.553 (30 – 40 mt), 1.649 (40 – 60 mt), 355 (60 – 90 mt), 89 (over 90).

According to Redmayne’s forecast, this trend will keep its run until 2022 when there will be 387 yachts between 60 and 90 meters and even 97 in the over 90 class.

Other than the data on the existing global fleet, which of course needs constant and extraordinary maintenance, Redmayne called for “ the need of a new approach by shipyards, companies and most importantly from owners (both private and commercial) when it comes to refit operations ”. Business opportunities are still there since in 2019, from an international point of view, there are 847 yachts under five-years refitting plans and 1430 which need three years long operations. In this sector, where the offer from all the 190 shipyards in the world is sky-high, Italy stands among the first five countries for number of commissions.

In such a competitive environment, according to Poerio, “the Mediterranean must come back with a central and determined role. How? Widening the offer, quality, and choice through a nautical luxury tourism strategy which today doesn’t have a clear and defined personality.” Poerio’s idea is a cluster which brings together the main countries of the Mediterranean who operate in the refit sector with Italy, Spain, and France leading the group, something that will develop new targeted services in ports and relative cities where specific tourism is identified.

YARE will continue tomorrow – Friday 22 March – with B2C – Meet the Captain . A very appreciated format by both captains and companies thanks to an innovative app which carefully matches refitting needs and offers. This all-business day will end with the Captains’ Night , a captains only recreational and relaxing moment offered by NCA Refit Shipyard in their new NCA Village in Marina di Carrara.

Next Saturday 23 March , grand closing of the event, sports will be under the spotlight. The captains will be guested by Versilia Golf Resort in Pietrasanta for a thorough golf session for both beginners and veterans. Following that, a drink before the parting and best wishes for the next year’s edition.

YARE is organized and promoted by NAVIGO , innovation and development for the nautical sector and with the support of   Distretto Tecnologico della Nautica e della Portualità Toscana .

YARE is sponsored by Lürssen, Boero, Jotun, Felice Maritime Consulting and Yacht Management, Italia Super Yacht, Porto Mirabello and Orbis Yacht, NCA Refit, Lusben and Fincantieri

Supported by: Ucina – Confindustria Nautica, Distretto Tecnologico per la Nautica e la Portualità Toscana, Camera di Commercio Lucca and Lucca Promos, Intesa San Paolo .

Patronized by SYBAss, Ucina – Confindustria Nautica, Nautica Italiana, Sezione Yacht Federagenti Italia , by national and international captains’ associations: Gepy, Italianyachtmasters, Pya and by local institutions Comune Viareggio, Comune di Lucca, Provincia Lucca . www.palmasuperyachtvillage.com

Palma Superyacht Village, previously known as the Palma Superyacht Show, is an integral part of the  Palma International Boat Show (PIBS), the opening event of the Mediterranean yachting season, taking place from the 25th to 28th of April 2024. It is one of the few industry-owned and operated yacht shows aimed to bring the visitor closer to yachting and offer any services a yacht owner might require, provided by trusted and well-established companies, in a relaxed but professional atmosphere.

Whereas PIBS is the hub for the latest shipyard presentations and services related to yachts under 24 m, Palma Superyacht Village displays a selection of superyachts above 24 m for sale and charter, as well as hosts an exhibition of nautical services available to superyachts. Within the dock-side exhibition there is also a separate area dedicated to Refit & Repair, representing the many specialist companies that make the Balearic Islands one of the world´s leading destinations for refit and maintenance of boats.

Because of this, our islands have the necessary infrastructure to carry out repair and maintenance work on both small and large boats. In fact in Palma alone, more than 1000 projects a year are carried out on boats over 24 m, according to the data collected by the Balearic Marine Cluster

The exhibition is located in the Moll Vell area in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, right in front of the majestuous, landmark cathedral of Palma and the bustling old town with its restaurants, outdoor cafes and quirky boutiques. With its laid back, uncomplicated and fun atmosphere, the Palma Superyacht Village is the perfect place to discover yachting.

Global Superyacht Forum

By Stephanie Warren

F orward thinking will dominate three days of debate, dialogue and discovery, amongst 400 of the most influential individuals in the superyacht industry.

Led by up to forty world-class speakers and - most importantly - visionaries of the superyacht future, the audience will consider new approaches and share their experiences on the following:

  • Industry investment
  • Financial control
  • Business principles
  • Propulsion technology
  • Engineering
  • Manufacturing
  • Project management
  • Owner expectation
  • Reaching our potential
  • Regulations
  • What the future holds

Coinciding with the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) , the Global Superyacht Forum remains and prospers as a platform for education, innovation and presentation of new ideas. Supported by twelve influential companies within the world of superyachts, this year promises to see not only change as a pinnacle theme on the stage, but reflected in the learning environment. Expect a facelift in the Forum, a new lease of life in the Lounge and a dinner venue to charm the most discerning of delegates.

The Superyacht Events team will introduce new tools to help attendees connect at this year's conference, such as speed-networking and opportunities to test your knowledge. On Monday, for the first time we will introduce exhibitors from the SuperYacht Pavilion to bring new ideas and new agents into the mix.

On Tuesday, the traditional Global Superyacht Forum dinner promises to be in a very untraditional setting, as we take you away from the classroom and show you an oasis of good food, good fun and above all, an unrivalled networking opportunity. Wednesday's closing drinks will give everyone a chance to consolidate what they've heard and catch that last contact before the plane home.

ECAM Launches Co-Prod Forum

With co-production an ever-popular resource for independents and emerging talent, the Madrid Film School (ECAM), hailed as one of the leading film schools in the world, has launched ECAM Forum , a new co-production initiative to run June 10 – 13 in Madrid.

An Open Call ending April 9 has been announced March 18 for submissions from local Spanish feature film projects in development or in post-production, and series projects in development.

The forum is aimed at producers, directors and screenwriters, and seeks to foster audiovisual production, promote emerging talent and present local audiovisual projects and companies to the international marketplace.

It aims to match each project with the right creative and financial partners by tailoring its approach to each individual project, serving as a platform to foster international deals and funding opportunities.

For the duration of four days, both local and international projects in different formats such as feature films, short films, and series, will converge in a shared workspace. This gathering will encompass presentations, screenings, scheduled meetings, one-to-one discussions, as well as organized encounters. Additionally, attendees can expect conferences, lunches, and industry rendezvous meals to further foster collaboration and networking opportunities.

In this inaugural edition, the culmination of projects from ECAM’s diverse programs throughout 2024, comprising feature films – La Incubadora, short films – AFTER, and Series, will come together.

These will join handpicked projects with global potential, in either development or post-production, that have been selected through calls, at festivals or development programs with such partners as Focus CoPro (Cannes SFC), BAM Bogota, Málaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF – MAFIZ) and Ikusmira Berriak (Tabakalera, San Sebastián Festival).

Three calls have been opened: For local feature films in development (dubbed The Films to Come), feature films in post-production (The Last Push), and series projects in development (Series).

ECAM has also been home to an incubator, backed by the Spanish Film Institute (ICAA) and the Comunidad de Madrid (Madrid Council), since 2019.

Speaking at the press conference, Gonzalo Cabrera, the Comunidad de Madrid’s director general of culture and creative industries, noted: “Between the years 2019 and 2024, up to 12 feature films were produced through the incubator with great success. These garnered important awards such as the Silver Bear, the Golden Shell, the Golden Biznaga, the Forqué Awards, the Feroz Awards, the Goya Awards, and participation in festivals such as San Sebastián, Berlin, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, Seville and Sitges.”

“This has always been one of our fundamental objectives: to support and promote the industrial creative fabric of audiovisual works within the Community of Madrid, a community that houses nearly 29,000 professionals. Some 50% of the production companies in the national territory are based in Madrid,” he added.

The five new projects selected for the latest incubator, the seventh edition, are: “Flores para una madre ausente” by Ana Puentes and Adriana Vera; “Los Olvidados,” Jorge Cantos and Eva Bodas; “Memorial,” Sergi Pérez, Carla Sospedera and Anna Cammany; “Riure,” Jorde Boquet Claramunt and Anna Moragriega and “Tres dias de verano,” Alvaro Lopez Alba and Nuria Muñoz Ortín

Ex-bellator title challenger alejandra lara to headline combate global event vs. lucero acosta, share this article.

Alejandra Lara will soon be back in action.

The former Bellator title challenger has booked her first fight since her release after the promotion was acquired by the PFL. Lara (9-7) returns against Lucero Acosta (5-2) in a three-round, women’s flyweight bout that’s set to headline a Combate Global event May 11 in Miami.

Combate Global announced the news Monday, which was also confirmed by MMA Junkie.

Lara was released by the PFL in January after the promotion bought Bellator in November. She wasn’t given an opportunity to debut despite having multiple fights left on her contract. Lara most notably challenged for the Bellator women’s flyweight title in 2018, losing by submission to then-champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane . The Colombian fought in Bellator from 2017 to 2023 with her last bout in February 2023 when she lost a split decision to Diana Avsaragova.

On the other hand, Acosta, arguably Combate Global’s biggest name, is currently on a three-fight winning streak. She picked up a second-round stoppage over Manuela Marconetto in her most recent bout back in December.
