The new Tanna 47 features a much-changed galley area and a huge lounge area on her flybridge, making for sociable cruising

tr 47 catamaran

Fountaine Pajot’s latest model, the Tanna 47 catamaran is a successor to the successful Saona 47.

The newest addition to Fountaine Pajot’s range offers a much larger and completely reconfigured galley, now in a U-shape formation with 300lt of storage space.

The chart table is well considered and should be easily accessible from the helm and is open to the cockpit, which should make access when underway easy.

Another new highlight for the Tanna 47 her flybridge, which now features a lounge area that’s twice the size of her predecessor, the Saona 47.

This ‘lounge deck’ layout creates a space that, while easily useable when sailing, also makes for a large and comfortable social space when at anchor or in a marina.

The deck arrangement also allows up to 9m2 of solar panels to be fitted – as does the company’s other new launch, the Tanna 51. Interior layouts include three, four and five cabin options.

Tanna 47 - bareboat catamarans.

The 'Tanna 47' is a beautiful sailing catamaran with a spacious and elegant interior design for today's luxurious yacht charter experience. With its innovative galley/saloon area, ample storage space, and ergonomic watchkeeping station, this cat provides charterers a user-friendly and comfortable environment for exploring your destination. The large flybridge lounge area delivers additional benefits when sailing while below decks luxury cabins combine comfort and space in equal measure.

Tanna 47 drone shot

The Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 sailing catamaran has some design features that set her apart from other boats of her size in charter. Two words spring to mind - luxury and space!

New in 2023, the Tanna 47 replaces the Saona 47, using the same hull but with significant topside improvements. From the top, the flybridge lounge area is twice the size of the Saona's and can accommodate the maximum ten people on board during charter. So there's no reason for the person at the helm to be lonely. The helm station is well situated for  communication above and below as well as providing good sightlines.

On the middle deck the layout is very functional and the amount of storage space will surprise seasoned catamaran charterers. The large sliding door between cockpit and lounge brings everybody together in one seamless flow, while the galley is big enough for more than one person to share meal preparation duties. .

The cabins below and their ensuites are beautifully appointed. Two configurations have been initially released - the Maestro owner's version (3 cabins) and the Quintet (5 cabins). The version you get to charter will depend on where you chose to sail and the size of your group. Whichever Tanna 47 you take, you won't be disappointed with this lovely modern cat.

With all the modern technology and engineering going into cruising catamarans, sailing performance is excellent for a boat of this type. Manufacturer options that may be available on your Tanna 47 include solar panels and a hydraulic swim platform.

catana 47

Description

Catana is based in the Catalan region of southern France and is one of the pioneers of the performance cruising catamaran market. You could say that the Catana 47 is regarded as a something of a classic.

They built the 47 for many years- so this is a well proven boat, designed by Multihull specialist Christophe Barreau to replace the 471, and this catamaran has been tested many times on circumnavigations. The design benefited from continuous improvement over the years: the last version has more carbon fiber than older examples and they are produced from updated molds for the hulls and deck- the boats still have a familiar profile (the latest iteration is a bit more angular and “muscly”), with tall twin daggerboards, open helm stations aft (a Catana trademark) and a powerful rig and sail plan.

There are plenty of options in this length of boat like the Knysna 500 SE and the Nautitechs, but if you like a bit of speed the Catana 47 should be on your radar.

The boats were built for strength with the emphasis on keeping the weight down to maximise speed through the water as opposed to boats like the Elba 45 catamaran from Fountaine Pajot which is positioned more on the comfort side of things. Carbon fiber and other composites are used in high loaded areas to beef up the vinylester/polyester laminate. The structure is vacuum-bagged during construction, with the hull and deck are both cored with closed-cell foam.

The joinery inside is also built using cored laminates to keep the weight down. All in all, Catana has managed to shave off around 700 kg off the 47’s predecessor. But it´s still a comfy boat, although you are not going to get as much room on her as you would on a Fountaine Pajot or a Lagoon. But you´ll get to your destination faster.

tr 47 catamaran

One benefit of those aft helms is the deck and cockpit space you get on a Catana 47. The twin aft helm stations move the sailing away from  the living area, and the trademark central winches handle most of the sail lines.

The Bridle System. There is no traveller- the main is controlled via a bridle with two sheets, which you trim on the twin winches aft that sit amidships. This takes some getting used to, but it’s a system that Catana owners swear by – it’s an excellent way to tweak your trim and the force from any accidental gybes is minimised with this set up.

High Quality Gear The blocks, cleats, stoppers, winches are all high quality and oversized if anything. This boat gives the impression that it has been built with plenty of safety margin up its sleeves. One great feature of the 47 is that all sails can be managed from the cockpit: you don’t need to go to the mast foot for reefing.

Visibility can be a problem in the marina as the throttles are on the starboard helm only. This is similar to the Nautitechs (although this manufacturer does include throttles on both helms as an expensive option)- the solution is to come along the starboard side when docking or post someone to watch the port side.

Sailing Feel Another advantage of those aft helms is the direct response you get and this catamaran feels quick. She accelerates fast, especially if you keep the weight off her, and she hits top speeds in the high teens. If you are the type of sailor who enjoys trimming the sails, then you will enjoy this boat, as she rewards you with bursts of speed when she’s well set up. With those dagger-boards you’ll be able to make good headway into the wind as well, with the speed up and the leeway down.

So what´s the secret? Why is she so nippy? Well, weight saving of course, but also a square-topped main and 145-percent genoa that both get the boat slipping through the water in light to moderate breezes, and a sail plan that provides plenty of reefing options for windier conditions. The Tulip-shaped bows cut nicely through the chop when you are heading upwind and they have plenty of buoyancy forward when you are heading off it. The dagger-boards give you up to 8 feet of draft, which means less leeway on a close reach. Pull them up for a 3.5-foot boards up draft and you have less drag for when you are heading on a broad reach.

Under Power

The Catana 47 comes with twin 40HP engines and you should easily hit 7 knots at 2,200 rpm. Many owners alternate the engines to save fuel- you will still be motoring along at around 6 knots with one engine at 2400 rpm, so not much less speed over ground for a big saving in fuel consumption. If you really need to get somewhere fast under power, you’ll get 9 knots out of her with both engines purring along at 3000 rpm. As with most catamarans, she’s very manoeuvrable in the marina, but as we mentioned earlier, you just need to remember the reduced visibility of those aft helms. Coming in stern first is a breeze of course.

The saloon is well proportioned with a big sofa area wrapped around a table, a forward facing nav station to port and an aft facing galley with a “sink and a half” tucked into the port corner of the saloon. Visibility is good and the overall feel is light, bright and spacious. Compared to other more “open designs” like the Nautitech, you get relatively more room in the saloon than the cockpit. The saloon and cockpit are on different levels which, if you are used to more modern designs, takes some getting used to. Watch your head!

There’s plenty of room down below, and it´s light and well ventilated with good headroom. Your options are to go for a 3 cabin owner’s version with a full double berth and table aft, lots of stowage space amidships and a comfortable head with a separate shower forward. Close the curved sliding door for privacy.

The port hull has a single queen berth forward and either a double or twin berths aft (convertible twin berths). There are no showers in the port hull which might not go down so well with your guests.

Polar Diagram

tr 47 catamaran

There’s no great revolution in the last Catana 47 design- this is a well proven performance catamaran that has evolved over the years and remains a very attractive boat in this category. The Catana Group seem to be focusing on their Bali brand in terms of development which is where the volume is.

I’d love to see an evolved 47 design that takes cues from the newer Catana 53 which has a more open feeling between the cockpit and saloon. For the moment, however, the only new boats in the Catana range are the Catana 53 and the Ocean Class which is another 50 footer with a bulkhead steering position

If you are shopping around for alternatives, you might also want to take a look at the ITA 14.99 or the Outremer 45 – there´s plenty of choice in this market niche. And if you want some serious speed in this size and have deep pockets, then read our Gunboat 48 review – it´s one of our all time favourite catamarans. Let’s just hope that Catana rediscover their roots in the performance market.

Neel 47 Trimaran: Best Full-Size Multihull

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 9, 2019

Neel 47

It’s hard to imagine three vessels, in a single class, as different in layout, purpose and execution than the trio of multihulls that comprised the year’s Best Full-Size Multihull class. Two of the three were catamarans, and the third a most unusual craft: a cruising trimaran. Sorting out these unique boats was a challenge.

The multimillion-dollar Eagle Class 53—built in Rhode Island to exacting standards and a radical design brief (with potential foiling capability and a solid wing mast that also incorporates a “soft” mainsail on its trailing edge)—was not, in any manner, a contemporary cruising boat. Yes, there is a pair of cabins with doubles aft, and the central living space includes a workable galley and one other notable feature. “It’s the only boat we sailed that even had a full bar on deck with slide-out seats sitting on carbon fiber: custom-made carbon-fiber pods,” panelist Ed Sherman said. “I mean, it’s just an amazing piece of workmanship. I don’t know what else to say. It’s a cool boat.” And while it would be a reach to call the Eagle 53 a cruiser, it was certainly remarkable and couldn’t be ignored, which is why the judges were unanimous in separating it for special recognition.

Eagle Class 53

What it thus came down to was which of the two remaining boats—the Bali 5.4 cat and the Neel 47 tri—best addressed or met its stated design briefs. The 55-plus-foot Bali certainly has offshore bona fides—the boats are delivered across the Atlantic from the boatyard in France where they’re crafted—but the yacht is most definitely laid out for steady work (and parties) in the charter trade. The final deliberations were lively.

The first thing that struck judge Dan Spurr was the unusual sailing experience, with the steering station situated on a flybridge well above the waterline. “It felt like a floating island and kind of sailed like one, I thought,” he said. “Being so high above the water, even though we were doing well in light air and making 5 or 6 knots, it was almost hard to tell whether we were moving.”

Bali 5.4

His fellow judge Ralph Naranjo concurred. “The main boom on the Bali is probably 15 or 16 feet high,” he said. “You’re giving away a lot of the foot of the sail, and you’re sticking the masthead up a lot farther in the sky to get the same kind of drive. At anchor in warm climates in areas where you sail flat and don’t have too much of a seaway, boats like this certainly fit the bill. And the Bali was an extreme version of that. The idea of doing an ocean passage up there aloft seems like a tiring situation.”

“Under sail, the motion of the Neel through the water was very comfortable.”

“I was actually pleasantly surprised that the boat sailed better than I thought it would, and by a significant margin,” Sherman said. “And let’s not forget the chartering equation that’s a big part of this boat’s aura. The way it’s equipped and laid out down below, it’s built for calm seas and a bunch of friends to have one hell of a good time.”

In some ways, that describes the reasoning behind what happened next. Viewing it as the better layout and configuration for serious cruising, the judges conferred the title of Best Full-Size Multihull on the Neel 47 . For the BOTY 2020 awards, three hulls proved better than two.

“The Neel 47 is a very interesting boat—the only trimaran in our collection, which has quite a bit of significance just from a design perspective because it enables them to get all of their heavy gear and machinery in that center hull,” Sherman said. “In terms of balance, it’s a great way to go. Under sail, the motion of the boat through the water was very comfortable. It’s a unique concept with the interior layout in that the owner’s stateroom is at deck level with these giant picture windows overlooking the horizon, and the guest cabins are aft and in the amas. So even though we have a 47-footer here, it’s really a couple’s boat, though there is room for occasional guests.”

“The trend of late in cruising multihulls has certainly been toward cats, so I appreciated their efforts to make a cruising trimaran,” Spurr said. “There’s a real trade-off—the fundamental one being I believe you’re going to get better performance with a trimaran, but you’re going to sacrifice accommodations. So I feel that for most of the buying public, they’re going to have to be leaning toward the performance end of the spectrum. The main owner’s cabin on the saloon level is kind of fun and interesting, but it’s adjacent to the galley and entertaining areas. So, I agree with Ed that this is a boat aimed at an experienced couple.”

Those couples who go with a Neel will be going with a winner.

This vessel can take on high seas, goes fast and points well to the wind. It is a 4 cabin version, with queen berths that can sleep 10 and has the reliable shaft drives.

Being the original owners, we have enjoyed over 50,000 cruising miles, including a circumnavigation and many years owning a sailing charter business.
