Less best kept secret and more Mediterranean favourite, nothing says French Riviera like the glistening waters of Antibes. Equally as elegant as its neighbouring hotspots of Monaco and Cannes, it has an allure of its own that gives your Mediterranean charter the final dust of gold it deserves...

Unbeatable nightlife, glamorous hotspots, luxury boutiques, Antibes ticks every box. While 'private' seems to be the buzz word for everything in Antibes, superyacht owners can relish in moments of privacy and seclusion as well as places to be seen, on and off your superyacht.

The area is a popular destination for superyacht travelers, who love strolling down the rustic cobblestone streets of Old Town and through bustling open-air markets filled with local food. Art lovers will want to see Picasso's paintings in a 12th-century chateau and check out the Antibes Art Fair. The town is also a great spot to enjoy a variety of beaches and a botanical garden, perfect at marveling at its manicured beauty, something known to the French Riviera Region.

Old Town Elegance Take a walk through the narrow streets of vielle ville, the historic Old Town. Divided into the old port and the newer Port Vauban, superyachts genetly dot the horizon. Spot the historic site of The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Platea d'Antibes with its wooden sculptured front and well worth stepping inside for its crucifix of 1447 and a Virgin sculpted 1515.

Art Lovers Rejoice The former Château Grimaldi at Antibes, with a rich heritage and colourful history stretching hundreds of years is a must see. In 1946, Spanish artist Pablo Picasso came to live in the Château Grimaldi and was so delighted with the place and the views out to sea that he later gave a large number of his works to the town. For art lovers this is an unmissable hotspot to be relished.

Local Markets Each day in Cours Masséna in the heart of Old Town, the Provencal market 'Le Marche Provencal' takes place. This wonderful sight offers a vibrant escape into bustling locals who make their way through fresh local produce and unites international travellers for a taste of local life, just as the locals do.

Minimal White Logo

Superyacht Stefania: up for auction in a few days in Antibes.

A judicial auction that will see the famous superyachts STEFANIA being put up for sale is expected to take place on January 25. Already a winner of Boat Design & Innovation in 2022, this superyacht is virtually new, built ne 2021 by the Monaco-based Dynamiq shipyard, to date it has logged only 200 engine hours.

The Agency for the Management and Recovery of Seized and Confiscated Assets (Agrasc) has appointed the law firm DE BAECQUE & Associés, judicial commissioner, to organize the judicial auction of the Super Yacht Stefania. The event will be held in the heliport hall of the International Yachting Club d’Antibes or by phone. Prior enrollment is mandatory and requires a 500,000 deposit.

The superyacht STEFANIA had already been unsuccessfully put up for sale a year ago at an amount of about $20 million; current auction closing estimates now predict a much lower figure, probably around $8 to $10 million.

What the Superyacht STEFANIA looks like.

SUPERYACHT stefania NAVIGATION

Built in 2021, the Superyacht STEFANIA was designed by Dynamiq and features luxurious Art Deco interiors designed by Giuseppina Arena. Built with an aluminum hull and superstructure, this 41-meter long and 8.20-meter wide superyacht meets RINA’s highest commercial class standards and prestigious Comfort and Green StarPlus ratings.

Powered by two MAN V12 1650 engines with just 200 hours of operation, it cruises comfortably at 12 knots, reaching a top speed of 21 and a range of 5,000 nautical miles, thanks in part to its 29,600-liter fuel tanks. Featuring a shallow draft of only 1.8 meters, SUPERYACHT STEFANIA can anchor closer to sheltered bays and coves, while an advanced on-board stabilization system reduces the yacht’s lateral roll and promises guests an exceptional level of comfort at anchor.

Superyacht STEFANIA POOL

Its two decks offer an area of about 120 m² divided into two areas, with a hot tub in the bow and two large TV screens, and a bar with unobstructed ocean views in the stern. Stefania also has a second oversized 4.5-ton 10-person pool and a solarium with a second bar. Two dinghies dedicated to guests and maneuvering.

Lacquered wood, suede, velvet, and marble (Calacatta Borghini, Calacatta Oro, Noir Saint Laurent, and Lasa): this palette of neutral beiges is enhanced by touches of ocean blue in the furniture and cushions. The main deck floors are white Lasa marble with gold inlays framing Oliver Treutlein’s exclusive hand-woven carpets. A wood-burning fireplace heats the large living room, with ceilings 2.2 meters high.

MAIN DECK

SUPERYACHT STEFANIA can accommodate up to 10 people in five luxurious suites with private bathrooms, including a master suite, three double cabins, and a twin cabin. Also notable are the dedicated crew quarters, which can accommodate up to 6 people.

Practical information for participating in the auction of the SUPERYACHT STEFANIA

Located on the Cote d’Azur tucked in between Cannes and Nice, Antibes is a vibrant seaside town full of character and the sort of charm you will only find in the South of France. Perhaps for this reason (and a large well-protected port), Antibes had, for a long time, already established itself as the main yachting hub on The French Riviera – no wonder why so many hopeful “greenies” looking to get started in the industry choose this destination every season as their starting out point in yachting.

Similar to most other Mediterranean ports, Antibes screams of history; originally the city was established as Antipolis by the Greeks in the fifth century BC before becoming a part of the Roman empire a good 300 years later. It was not until the fall of the empire and the following centuries of unrest that the city finally came under French rule during the 15 th century. Later on the port became the base of Louis XIV’s navy and in more recent times also suffered German bombardments during WWII due to its’ strategic location. Eventually, the once quaint fishing village became a hotspot for the international jet set and consequently turned into the superyacht port it is known as today – the largest in Europe!

For us yachties Antibes is the perfect place to be based – and to start out in the industry. Nearly all types of yachting facilities and services are found in the area, if not just a step down the coast. You will find a plethora of crew houses, crew agencies, training schools etc. and for those looking for work, most marinas are easy to access making dockwalking fairly straight forward. Yachts of all sizes are moored in the marinas along the riviera and it is both easy and economical to travel to other ports such as Cannes, Nice and Monaco – and even into Italy.

Just a short walk from Port Vauban, inside the city walls the narrow cobblestone streets are full of quaint little cafes, bars, restaurants and small boutiques. Not to be missed is the colourful city market “Le Marché Provençal”, a typical French market boasting farmers’ fresh produce (did anyone say “fromage”?), charcuterie, fruit, flowers, food stalls, local crafts, clothes and fabrics – you name it!

As if this is not enough, Antibes also offers some of the best beaches on the French Riviera. Get yourself a great tan or go explore the South of France by bus and train – or by car if your budget allows. Hiring a car venturing up into the Alps with a few good mates or perhaps setting off on a long-weekend road trip around the villages of Provence is one of those experiences that will make your friends at home green with envy. France has so much to offer and it would be almost criminal not to take advantage of it while you are there!

One thing is for sure; Antibes and the Cote d’Azur will stay with you forever. Perhaps you will even follow in the footsteps of 100s if not 1000s of other yachties and settle here one day. Bienvenu!

Antibes Information

Enjoying antibes, crew houses, property agencies, flat shares, room booking sites, transport info, tourist information, crew training, crew agencies, marinas and shipyards, crew medical services, emergency contacts.

1 Reserve crew house well in advance The yachting hubs get very busy during the season with crew houses known to be fully booked from the end of March throughout June-ish. If you decide to stay in a crew house, then it is vital to make a reservation as soon as you know when you will be going. Make sure to bring a printed confirmation. A listing of crew houses can be found in the Crew Houses-section. Alternatively, you also have the option of staying in a hostel. HostelWorld is a brilliant tool to help you find the most suitable hostels for soon-to-be-yachties.

2 Passport- and visa copy Keep with you a laminated copy of your passport and any visa you may be required. This way you limit the risk of being stuck overseas without any sort of ID. Include your emergency contact numbers on the backside and possibly also your blood type.

3. Credit Card numbers Make a note of your credit card numbers and the related lost/stolen telephone help line. You can leave them on a note with your family, for instance.

4 Local Transport Whether you are headed to Antibes, Cannes, Monaco or Nice public transportation is quite good and affordable and will get you there easily. During the evenings or on public holidays (or when the French go on strike) your options can be somewhat limited. Tell the driver where you need to go, and he will normally let you know where to get off. If you plan on using buses and trains on a regular basis, then you can save yourself a fair amount of money by getting a weekly pass.

Watch your belongings when using public transportation. Several cases of crew having lost bags, phones etc. have been reported in the past.

Prices vary depending on the distance and time of the day, you will be traveling, but count on less than 5 Euros. You can book online on the SNCF website or pay in the ticket office.

Train passes are know as “ZOU Hebdo. It is a weekly pass between 2 points of your choice on the TER coastal train. It gives you huge discounts (up to 75%) and is perfect for dockwalkers! Happy train travels and once again, watch your belongings!

Tram: To get on the train, you will need to travel by Tram line 2 to either Gare Nice-St Augustin or Gare Nice-Ville. You can catch the tram by exit A0 in Terminal 1 or exit A2 in Terminal 2.

Going TO the airport make sure to get the AEROPORT connection and NOT the CADAM – they are easily confused! !

Alternatively, you can also take the Aeroport Direct-bus which operates early mornings and evenings to get to the train station.

Uber: Another popular option is Uber, the door-to-door service. Once you have downloaded the app, you can check the price to your destination and book your ride via the app. Pricier than the bus and the train, but it will get you to your destination safely and without any uncertainties.

5. ATMs: A few good pointers to how you can save money / avoid being scammed when using ATMs and shopping with your bank card overseas;

– ALWAYS withdraw in LOCAL currency (US$ in US, EUROS in EU/Euro zone, GBP in UK, Rand in South Africa, Swiss Francs in Switzerland etc. )

– ALWAYS decline conversion (leave it to your own bank)

– ALWAYS pay good attention to the transaction fee – in particular in areas with lots of nightlife. (one yachty experienced being charged 50 USD in Cancun just to withdraw 100 USD! ! ! )

– Some ATMs will offer quite large amounts (to make a larger profit from the transaction). In such case, see what your alternative options are.

Check out this great explanatory video where you will see how it works in real life. Potentially, it will save you a lot of money!

6 Get a local SIM card Getting yourself set up with a local telephone number is not strictly required. Yet, people prefer to call local numbers rather than overseas numbers despite everyone being on WhatsApp these days. Furthermore, you may avoid any roaming charges associated with your current provider.

In France many yachties use Free Mobile Sosh Mobile

Free Mobile is the most widely used service by yachties in the South of France. The closest Free Mobile store is in the Antibes Centre Commercial by the big Carrefour hypermarket as well as in Cap 3000 (shopping centre by Nice Airport) in Nice. All are open Mon-Saturday, but with different closing times. Check out the Free store locator.

As soon as you have a local number make sure to include it on your CV and business card as well as updating your number with any crew agencies you are signed up with.

7. Print business cards and CVs

The sooner you have your CV and business cards (the French call it a Carte de Visite) printed, the sooner you will be ready to start the job hunt.

Both clip art and templates are available for free online. The very simple design above was made using Canva (which also offers great templates for your CV). They even give you the option to include nautical themes such as an anchor, a lighthouse, a compass, a sail, waves, a rising sun, a dolphin you name it…

Alternatively, for a very minimal fee you can have a professional designer create a print-ready professional looking business card (and CVs) on FIVERR. The design below includes double-sided design and unlimited revisions. This business card was designed by a designer starting her design service at just 5 USD.

Make sure to include the following information: Position Name Telephone / WhatsApp / Skype Short objective / Available for Daywork, Freelance, Deliveries, Full-time or Part Time work as applies to you Qualifications Photo (optional, although it will help the recipient remember you) QR code* with link to your CV

*Free QR codes can easily be generated online. Next, download the scannable code and include it with your business card.

Your business card does not have to be the highest print quality available, but obviously the better quality the more it will stand out. Many yachties use Moo. com and VistaPrint. com. Both are great services and well-recommended. You can work on this in advance and have your business cards delivered straight to your crew house or your home address prior to traveling to Antibes, although doing so you will not be able to include a local number.

Locally, yachties have been recommending business card- and CV printing in these locations (among others): Antibes Imprimerie 5, rue Vauban S. G. S. Print 26, rue Lacan

How many cards and CVs to print is up to you to decide, but somewhere around 50-100 CVs and perhaps 200 business cards should do you fine to begin with. It is easy to have more printed, if necessary.

As for printing CVs, one important thing to remember is that if you work on it or make prints in a public internet cafe etc. always remember to delete your CV off the computer, when you are done.

8. Get to know the ports Finding out which ports are most popular with superyachts is essential, obviously. Pick the brains of others staying in your crew house or hostel. They will most likely know where to go. Some marinas will be way better for dockwalking than others. Some may be gated, while others may have easy access. Some may have lots of large yachts, while others are for small pleasure yachts with no professional crew on board.

And then there are the shipyards, where there is always work going on. They will usually have security by the gate, often with strict security measures. There is a good reason for that; other than providing security for their clients, with a lot of heavy machinery moving around and the type of work going on, dockwalking can be dangerous, in particular for newcomers to yachting. Generally, dockwalking is not recommended in shipyards. Instead try and meet crew in the yachty bars after work.

Here is a list of some of the marinas and shipyards popular with superyachts in

FRANCE / ITALY

Antibes: Port Vauban, IYCA* Juan-Les-Pins: Port Gallice Golfe Juan: Port Camille Rayon Cannes: Port de Cannes, Port Pierre Canto Nice: Port de Nice Monaco: Port Hercules, Port de Fontvielle La Ciotat: La Citotat Shipyards** San Remo: Portosole Imperia: Porto Maurizio Genoa: Porto Antico, Molo Vecchio, Marina Genova Aeroporto Viareggio: Porto di Viareggio * Gated Marina ** Gated Shipyard dockwalking not encouraged

You can use MarineTraffic to see how busy the various ports in your area are.

9 Network There is little doubt that he large majority of crew jobs goes through word of mouth. For this reason, it is really important for you to start building a good network within the industry already from Day 1.

The more people, who knows you are looking for work, the larger are your chances of finding work. It is often seen that a yacht already employing a dayworker or two needs more dayworkers the following day. In such a case the captain will nearly always ask the dayworkers if they know of anyone else, who may be available. That’s where you get in the picture, but only if you have an established network. Here are a few of ideas of how to do that;

First off, build a good reputation for yourself as being friendly and helpful and be sociable.

When you do yachting courses meet up for a drink or two after training is over and connect with everyone attending the course on Facebook. If you do your STCW and other entry-level training keep in touch with your fellow students. Stay in a crew house instead of private accommodation. If you stay in a crew house be sociable with everyone. It is no secret that sailors like a drink or three. Neither is it a secret that the best way to meet yacht crew is either when dayworking or in the bars. When you daywork, be friendly and sociable with everyone on board without interfering with their work. You may run into them in the bar one of the coming days or perhaps in years from now on a different yacht! Try not to miss out on any yachting events such as boat shows, crew events, webinars or crew dinners. These events will normally be announced ahead of time in the Yacht Crew Facebook groups, among others. When you meet people in the industry, share your business card and within reason ask them if you may add that person on Facebook. Use Facebook to build your network. Set up an account purely for yachting and add other yachties and industry professionals. Be active with posting photos etc. , which gives them something to comment on. Make sure, they can tag you in job posts. In the Facebook group covering your current location ask if there is anyone, who might be interested to meet up. You could ask if there is anyone from your country in town or if there is anyone interested in participating in an activity that you both share (rent a car to go exploring for the weekend, go for a run, go to the beach, go on a hike, go to the movies, meet up for a drink, go to watch rugby or Champions League in a bar, go out for a pizza etc. ).

After work many venture out for a drink just to get off the boat for a little while. Crew tend to frequent the same bars, no matter where in the world, they are located. Some of the more popular yachty bars in the area are;

Antibes The Duke The Hopstore The Blue Lady) Cannes Ma Nolans Monaco Starsn Bars Nice Ma Nolans San Remo (Italy) The Red Lion

Long story short, making a good name for yourself and being proactive in your quest to build a larger network will pay off, eventually. The more people you know, the larger are the chances that work will come to you. Good luck!

10. Weekly budget Make your money last as long as possible. As simple as that may sound, you will have a fair few expenses including; Travel insurance Airfare Local transportation Accommodation Printing of business cards and CVs Mobile phone Food Drinks Training & ENG/1 Unforeseen expenses

Your expenses will vary all depending on the location. South of France is by far the most expensive destination in Europe, while Palma is not exactly super cheap either. Fort Lauderdale is somewhere in between.

To keep you going for as long as possible, it is really important to keep your expenses in control. A good way to make your money stretch a bit longer is to create a weekly budget for the expenses mentioned above. When you reach your weekly set budget for beers, then you know to kick back on that account for the next few days or perhaps you can go all in on cold beers and wine on Sunday afternoon

You can also save a fair amount of money on making your own food or sharing with others rather than going out for pizzas, kebabs and burgers.

In Antibes some have been using the local campsites in the past, which saved them a bunch of money. Unfortunately, camping is unavailable in many other locations, including Palma. Many end up renting a private room or share a flat with other job seeking yachties. These options are cheaper than most crew houses and hostels, but keep in mind the importance of networking, which will be limited in particular when renting a private room. If you choose to stay in a hostel or in a crew house inquire about prices prior to booking. You can find a list of crew houses and hostels in the crew house section.

There is also money to be saved on local transportation. To get you around, you can buy a second hand bicycle or moped on Facebook or travel by bus and train instead of by taxi, which is not exactly cheap in the South of France. Uber is also available as a somewhat economical alternative to jumping in a taxi. Most public transportation will offer discounts on multiple journeys or day passes so look into that. There are links posted in the Local Transport-section.

When it comes to printing business cards, then you can have FREE business cards printed on VistaPrint. They come with a small advert on the backside, but they do the job alright!

Phone plans continue to change, so it is impossible to say which one is cheapest and which one suits your needs best, but also there you can save yourself a bunch. Shop around, check online rates and if in doubt, ask on Antibes Yacht Crew to see what other crew recommends. Seemingly, most local crew use Free Mobile. You can find them in the Antibes Centre Commercial by the big Carrefour hypermarket.

Finding daywork is obviously a complete game changer when it comes to your budget. Suddenly, you have an income, which will make life so much easier plus you spend less if you eat on board. Keep spending your money wisely. You never know when you will find work next.

Putting a number on any of the expenses mentioned above is nearly impossible, as we are all different. Some will not mind sleeping in a tent, while others may want to share an AirBnB rental apartment. Some may be partying everyday while others will meet up for a cup of coffee here and there. Some may not find any daywork (it is not entirely uncommon, unfortunately), while others find daywork on day 1. In Antibes, count on a monthly budget in the range of 2,000 Euros overall (not including training and medical expenses).

Watch over your money like a hawk! It is not rocket science; if you piss it away, apart from having a good time, your job hunt may come to an end much sooner.

11. Training Having the right credentials is key to finding a job on a yacht. In an industry that is surrounded by rules and regulations, there is just no way around it. Common for all crew, you must have your STCW/10 Basic Safety Training (sometimes referred to as STCW/95) and the ENG/1 or a similar seafarer medical certificate.

The minimum requirements to work on a yacht depends on the position you are looking for;

Deckhand: STCW/10, Powerboat 1+2 including VHF Stewardess: STCW/10, Food & Hygiene Level 2 Engineer: STCW/10, AEC Chef: STCW/10, Ship’s Cook Certificate Desirable courses, which will improve your chances of finding work: Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) (all crew) Personal Water Craft Instructor (PWC Instructor) (Deckhands) Yachtmaster Offshore (Deckhands) Silver Service (Stewardesses)

If these courses are not available in your current location, you can do them in Antibes, Palma, Fort Lauderdale and UK – among others but remember to book your courses well in advance!

In the Crew Positions section, you can read more about which certificates are necessary to work in the position you are looking for and to progress up the ranks.

Course prices vary hugely between destinations. In countries such as South Africa, the Philippines and various Eastern European countries, you will find some of the best prices. In the UK and US prices are fairly reasonable while in Palma and Antibes some prices are at the higher end of the scale. It definitely pays to compare prices between the schools if you are on a somewhat tight budget. Do keep in mind any added travel expenses should you decide to do courses in other locations. Also make sure whether or not VAT is included in the course price. Some schools list their prices excluding VAT.

There are a number of training schools in Antibes. All of them have a good reputation, and prices are mostly about the same. Some may offer you 10% Palma Yacht Crew discount off some courses, but you will have to inquire directly.

Courses available in Antibes include (but are not limited to)

STCW/10 Powerboat Level 1+2 Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) PWC Proficiency / Instructor GMDSS OOW modules AEC 1 Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2 Silver Service G. U. E. S. T. interior modules Medical training

General opening hours for pharmacies in France are Mon-Saturday 08.30-12.00 and then again from 14.00-19.30h. In larger cities they remain open during lunch hours. On Sundays, public holidays and during outside-hours there will be at least one local pharmacy on duty (“pharmacie de garde”). All pharmacies will display the schedule of the current on duty pharmacy in the window. This is also available at the local police commissariat. The information can also be found online or by phone (be ready to enter postal code and the required opening hours).

Price: On Request

Billionaires’ Quay - French Riviera - France - Limited Megayacht Berths - Berths for Stopover, Passage and Temporary of Medium Duration Possible - Permanent Berths on Waiting List - Expansion Project in Discussions...

Berth Description

The BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY also known as the “IYCA”, currently stretches 650 m out into the sea and is the main breakwater of the entire port Vauban of Antibes. It has 19 berths for yachts up to 90 m in length, including two larger berths for 150 m and 165 m Megayachts. The leaseholds giving the right to use the berths located on this famous quay sell for record figures and they are extremely limited and highly demanded.

The berth owners of the BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY in Antibes are among the wealthiest individuals on the planet, and their Megayachts, the most stunning. Though this quay was an ambitious project in its early days, this section of the port is nowadays also subject to overwhelming demand.

Knowing how much Megayachts generate for the economy, since 2011 the port Vauban and the town of Antibes have projected an expansion which would double the length of the jetty up to 1,250 m, creating an additional 450 m of quay for 25 Superyacht and Megayacht berths, with the possibility to even welcome cruise ships, as well as creating shelter for the area on the north-eastern flank of Fort Carré. The cost of this extension is estimated at 230,000,000 €.

The exploitation of the basin of the BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY in Port Vauban of Antibes is managed by the International Yacht Club of Antibes “IYCA”, which financed and realized this project of moorings for Megayachts.

The BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY is located opposite the Fort Vauban hill and the berth layouts features a configuration essentially for Megayachts and some Superyachts in addition right next to the International Yacht Club.

The BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY of Antibes was built in order to accommodate 19 large pleasure vessels; It has been laid out as follows: 7 Posts of 70m x 16m 4 Posts of 80m x 18m 6 Posts of 90m x 20m 1 Post of 150m x 28m 1 Post of 165m x 40m

Mooring of Megayachts: A new system of mooring boxes is installed; it removes all chains, mooring buoys and brings to the ships security and ease of docking.

Heliport: The helicopter landing area represents a 28m by 29m rectangle. It has a regulatory sign allowing, subject to the authorization of the IYCA, the landing day and night. In addition, the heliport has four parking spaces.

COMMENTS Even if the berths are extremely limited and highly demanded in the BILLIONAIRES’ QUAY in the port Vauban of Antibes, Allied Yachting will endeavour to obtain you a berth for stopover, passage and possibly temporary of medium duration.

In this port reserved for very large vessels, it is important to be patient and to plan in advance for any berth reservation. Please contact us for rates and availabilities.

We will be periodically informing our clients on the expansion project, especially if pre-sales or an extended waiting list are opened.

Antibes Yacht Charter, French Riviera

Antibes on Charter Yacht Quantum

As one of the most famous yacht charter harbors in the Mediterranean, if not the world, Antibes in the French Riviera has a large variety of yacht charter available. This is, as much as anywhere, where you are likely to pick up your luxury yacht charter. The yacht charters in Antibes include motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and off-course the ever increasing super yacht charter. The emphasis in Antibes is however, on larger luxury yacht charters, although the French Riviera is an excellent area for the smaller yacht to explore.

As with most of the Mediterranean, and all the French Riviera, the Antibes yacht charter season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have the lightest winds but also the largest crowds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers or have already concluded their holidays.

Marinas and moorings in Antibes

Discover the top Antibes moorings

Antibes is one of the biggest luxury yachting centres on earth, with a huge port that curves around the horseshoe-shaped bay between the medieval ramparts on one side and Fort Carre on the other.

Book My Berth

Moorings & marinas

Antibes has been an important port since before the Middle Ages, when the Crusader ships stopped here on their way to the Holy Land, and, in the modern era, was the base of Louis XIV’s navy and was later bombed by the Germans due to its strategic importance during World War II.

Passing most of its life as a fishing port, Port Vauban of Antibes is today the largest yachting marina in Europe with 1700 berths ranging from 4.5m to 165m, and is logistically made up of two separate marinas, a professional fishing port and a shipyard.

There is also a small port at the base of the Cap d’Antibes called Port Salis, suited to small vessels, and the nearby ports of Juan les Pins, Port Crouton and Port Gallice, taking the total of Antibes-JLP berths to an enormous 2,800.

The IYCA (International Yacht Club of Antibes) Quay The privately-owned IYCA on Quai Camille Rayon , or ‘Millionaire’s Quay’, is probably the most famous of them all- for this is where the huge superyachts gather. On the IYCA, a 60-metre yacht s a minnow, dwarfed beside the palatial megayachts of Roman Abramovich, Paul Allen and the Saudi princes.

While there is a security guard posted at a boom gate on the IYCA to stop unauthorised vehicles, both tourists and visitors are welcome to walk along the IYCA, gawping at the huge shining yachts with their helicopters and swimming pools. And no, you can’t board ‘just for a look.’

If you do happen to have a spare €20 million+ to buy a berth lease, or fancy paying thousands a night to dock your 50metre+ superyacht, then you’ll be interested to know that the IYCA has plenty of room for the fuel trucks to dock, as well as waste services, electricity and water services and all the other things you’d expect from a luxury yacht marina. It also has a helicopter landing pad, that’s in case your yacht isn’t big enough for the helicopter to land straight onto its deck.

Port Vauban On the other hand, if you don’t happen to have that kind of money to hand and just want to dock a smaller boat in Antibes, then the rest of Port Vauban is a much more reasonable prospect. It runs from the ‘Old Port’ edging the wall of the IYCA quay, right around the bay to the shipyard beneath Fort Carre. This huge port has over 1600 berths-although these berths are still quite expensive and fiercely contested year-round. Many yachts will ‘winter’ in Antibes, making the most of the yachting infrastructure, suppliers and English speaking ‘yachtie bars’ that make this town a favourite for yacht crews. A lot of the berths are owned in an ‘amodie’ structure of share ownership, and many of the yachts have been berthed there for decades and barely seem to move.

However, with so many berths and a brilliant location, Port Vauban is indisputably a great place to berth your yacht, so book as early as possible. If you’re looking for a berth to buy or rent long-term, you can contact specialist berth companies such as Mooring Spot , while major yacht brokerages also list berths for sale.

If you’re just coming into Antibes on your yacht and are looking for somewhere to tie up for a night or two, contact the capitanerie (port headquarters) on VHF 09 to find out availability. The larger yachts will be based on either the Capitanerie Quay, the ‘Old Port’, or the Y Quay; the smaller vessels are mostly down towards the shipyard at the Fort Carre end of the port.

The professional fishing port is just near the archway leading towards the old port and IYCA and you’ll find a couple of small fishing charters and dive operators leaving from this area.

Port de la Salis The small fishing and leisure port of Port de la Salis is found at the end of the beaches at the base of the Cap d’Antibes. It has 220 berths for vessels up to 6m, as well as a little lift for haul outs.

Port Gallice Port Gallice is a modern marina and shipyard at Juan-les-Pins in the Antibes commune, accommodating yachts up to 45m in 525 berths. Well protected from winds, this marina has a travelift, a restaurant, shower and toilet facilities as well as waste, water and electricity services.

Port du Crouton Very close to Port Gallice, the small Port du Crouton caters to small vessels and local fishermen. There are moorings for 390 boats with a maximum length of 10 metres.

Marinas close to Antibes-Juan les Pins

For those wanting something slightly cheaper or if you can’t find a spot in Antibes or Juan les Pins, the nearby towns of Golfe Juan and Villeneuve Loubet also have popular marinas.

Villeneuve-Loubet Marina Baie des Anges is located below the immense curved buildings that dominate the coastline at Villeneuve Loubet on the way to Nice. This resort-style marina offers 574 berths up to 28m in length, as well as restaurants, boutiques, 8 hectares of gardens and a man-made white sand beach in the complex.

Golfe Juan Nearby Golfe Juan in the direction of Cannes has two popular marinas: Port du Golfe Juan and Port Camille Rayon , which lie side by side. Port Camille Rayon has 833 berths for boats from 6 m to 75 m. Restaurants, bars and yachting suppliers line the docks of these busy ports.

More inspiration...

All in all, it’s safe to say that there are a lot of boat berths in Antibes and the surrounding towns, making it an ideal place to stop and explore this gorgeous part of the French Riviera. Yacht Charter Antibes: The Top Things to Do During Your Charter

Antibes Old Town (Vieille Antibes) is reasonably small to explore. So a day charter here is ideal if added onto a yacht charter from Cannes, St Tropez or Monaco.

There are a number of diverse museums including the Musée Peynet, Archaeology Museum, Musée de la Tour and Postcard Museum. The best known of Antibes’ museums is the Picasso Museum. Located inside the restored Château Grimaldi, that once belonged to the influential Grimaldi family who took royal posts in Cagnes, Monaco and Grasse.

The Picasso Museum is best reached by walking along the old remparts where you can get panoramic views of the town beach Plage de la Gravette, the superyachts berthed at the IYCA (International Yacht Club d’Antibes) quay at Port Vauban and 16 th -century Fort Carré in the distance.

Antibes’ markets offer a glimpse into French life. The Marché Provençal at Cours Masséna is a lively market, selling fruit, vegetables, flowers, cured meats, olives, herbs and hand-milled soaps. It is open daily except Mondays from September to May. Thursday sees the rue Lacan car park become a large clothing market. And also a small but interesting antiques / brocante market is hosted at place Audiberti on both Thursday and Saturday.

The district of Safranier at the western edge of Old Town has pretty cobblestoned streets with flower boxes. It also has the ancient lavoir (wash house) and at number 8 Rue Bas-Castellet you’ll find the house that Nikos Kazantzakis, the author of ‘Zorba the Greek’ lived in. Don’t forget your camera on your yacht charter Antibes!

Antibes has a good range of restaurants and bars if you're seeking a meal or drink ashore.

Suggested Restaurants and Bars in Antibes

Antibes has a good range of restaurants and bars if you’re seeking a meal or drink ashore. 212 Yachts can give suggestions for the latest bars to frequent and top restaurants. Or for a place to relax with a quiet drink in the evening during your yacht charter Antibes.

Le Figuier de Saint-Espirit, located 5 minutes walk from Port Vauban, is hidden off the tourist path but worth finding. Awarded a Michelin star, Chef Christian Morisset focuses on precise cooking with immaculate presentation. They often have ‘2 meals for the price of 1’ promotions on their website. Make a reservation for a table under the fig tree in the courtyard.

A Taste of the Finest Wines

If you fancy a glass of wine try one of three distinctly different wine bars, all located within a few minutes from Port Vauban. Winebar is the latest addition to Antibes nightlife. A chic bar with contemporary décor with highly knowledgeable bar staff. Café Brun is popular with a young crowd. It has friendly staff and a funky décor with leather armchairs, bicycles suspended from the ceiling and great artwork. Ô 6 Conceptstore Bar à Vins (6 rue des Palmiers) with vaulted stone interior. With weekly live music it’s a good choice for an apéritif.

Le Carnet de Bord is a bistro-style restaurant where diners can choose from an inventive menu. With specialties such as scallops with pumpkin, ginger and fennel or caramelised pork fillet with girolle mushrooms and sweet potato. Ensure you reserve a table as the seating is limited.

La Tour Antique ( 4 rue de la Tourraque) situated a short distance from the remparts is ideal for a romantic meal. With less than 20 covers reservations are essential, as locals and tourists alike seek out this Italian restaurant. The menu is concise with 4 options for entrees, pasta, mains and desserts. However, you won’t regret dining there as the hospitable staff present quality food in a welcoming atmosphere.

For a relaxed ambiance, Pimm’s Bar on rue de la République is a fantastic place to sit with a pastis or chilled glass of rosé and watch the passerbys. To sample the best pâtisseries head to Pâtisserie Cottard (8 boulevard Dugommier) or Aux Délices Antibois (12 rue de la République).

For yacht charter clients, Antibes has a diverse range of stores retailing everything from souvenirs to Marseillaise soaps to homewares and luxury accessories.

Yacht Charter Antibes: Shopping Opportunities

For yacht charter Antibes clients, the area has a diverse range of stores. Retailing everything from souvenirs to Marseillaise soaps to homewares and luxury accessories.

If you’re looking for gifts, head to rue Aubernon, rue Thuret, place Nationale and rue James Close. There you’ll find shops with displays of jewellery, paintings, gadgets, children’s toys, homeware and fragranced body products.

For fashion, wander along rue Georges Clemenceau, rue de la République or the top of boulevard Wilson.

Food connoisseurs stroll along rue Sade with it’s boutiques with gourmet food products and premium kitchenware. We recommend Fromagerie L’Etable (1 rue Sade) who are one of the French Riviera’s best cheese suppliers. Maison Bremond 1830 (4 rue Sade) stocks artisan vinegars and conserves is also a must see. Amalthé (12 rue Sade) has beautiful tins of tea blends or stop into Oliviers & Co (13 rue Sade) for exceptional olive oil.

If you’re seeking an artwork or bespoke piece of jewellery, head along the streets near the Picasso Museum. There you can find the small galleries or visit rue des Bains.

Monoprix is Antibes’ answer to a department store. Combined with a supermarket you’ll find it located at place de Gaulle, 10 minutes walk from the Antibes train station. Here you will find women’s, men’s and kids fashion, accessories and beauty.

Île Saint-Honorat, is a pleasant island to visit with a medieval fortress, abbey and walking trails – you can even buy liqueurs and wine from the monks that live on the island!

Beyond Antibes on a yacht

Our suggestions for other places to go when visiting on your yacht charter in Antibes – nearby pretty bays and quality yacht cruising locations. Antibes is a fab location on the Riviera to visit on a day trip too with a Antibes boat rental.

Cap d’Antibes yacht charter

The Cap d’Antibes headland west of Antibes is home to some of the French Riviera’s priciest real estate and spectacular views from the plateau of the Chapelle de la Garoupe. Yachts anchor at Plage de Garoupe where there are a number of beach restaurants. There is also a scenic coastal pathway that weaves past the villas and rocky coves.

A popular spot for anchoring is the cove of Baie des Milliardaires and l’Argent Faux below the historic Villa Eilenroc. Day charters can also stop off at the beautiful Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc for lunch at the Eden-Roc Restaurant or Eden-Roc Grill and Bar.

Juan les Pins by boat

Home to the annual Jazz à Juan Jazz Festival, Juan les Pins was a playground for the rich and famous from the late 19 th -century when socialites, writers and singers used to come there to party. Today, it’s a busy summer resort with some of the French Riviera’s best examples of Belle Époque and Art Deco buildings, lively bars and a good range of toes-in-the-sand beach restaurants.

Close to Port Gallice, yacht charter Antibes and Antibes boat rental clients can take a leisurely lunch at one-Michelin star restaurant Les Pêcheurs at the Relais & Châteaux Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel. And don’t miss visiting the Hôtel Belles Rives for a cocktail F. Scott Fitzgerald would have been proud to sip on.

Lérins Islands yacht charter

A good choice for a Antibes boat rental day charter, the Lérins Islands sit a short distance off the mainland and offer a relaxed pace from the resort towns. Île Saint-Honorat , is a pleasant island to visit with a medieval fortress, abbey and walking trails. You can even buy liqueurs and wine from the monks that live on the island! Île Sainte-Marguerite is famous for it’s prison cell where the Man in the Iron Mask was once kept. The maritime museum has a small collection of undersea and archaeological finds. Afterwards, book lunch or dinner at beach restaurant La Guérite . Our yacht charter clients enjoy dining waterside with marvellous views across the bay.

212 Yachts offers both small boat rental and luxury yachts to rent from all ports on the French Riviera. We hope you have enjoyed our recommendations for the best sightseeing, restaurants, bars and places to shop in Antibes! Best & Worst Times For Finding Yacht Crew Jobs  In Antibes, France:

The worst times to apply: january, february, november, december.

The Caribbean season is in full force during this period. Therefore, we would advise an entry-level seeker to avoid applying for a job at this time.

Good times to apply: March, April, October

When we say good, we mean there is a decent chance. However, you may find yourself either a bit too early, or too late, for prime hiring season. Great times to apply: May, September

We recommend if you’re in the area during this time to consider completing your training courses. It may also be worth gaining some experience to prepare for the following month.

The ideal time to apply: June, July, August

South African Seafarer Questions and Answers (FAQ)

1. From Phillip H, Cape Town:

My son (26 years) has been hoping to get some work on these yachts but has had no success so far, after completing his deckhand training etc in Cape Town last year. We would really love to learn whatever we can about how to go about getting work on the yachts.

A few questions for Philip first of all – has your son only been applying from here in South Africa or has he been over to Europe or the states to look for work yet? If he has only been applying from here in South Africa then he should consider going over to Europe as this will give him the best chance and it is very rare for someone new to the industry to land a job from here.

If he has been over and wasn’t able to find a job then there are a few things that you should look at: CV would be number one, also timing and area he was looking in would need to be considered.

If he is light on experience, then it’s a good idea for him to maybe get in touch with Cape Town Yacht services – Erik Bjerring – Owner – +27 72 688 1444. They offer yacht work experience on their fleet in Cape Town. Your son could then get a written reference and some good work experience.

If you would like to book a personal consultation to get some more advice and discuss your son’s situation specifically Trilogy Luxury training offers information sessions to help you best plan the route your son should take as well as discussing CV layout and job search tips.

2. From Alex K, Joburg:

Does doing a course in South Africa guarantee you a job on a yacht? Which is the best course to do?

Doing a course anywhere in the world does not guarantee you a job on a yacht. But not all courses in South Africa are created equal and some training providers will sell you everything and the kitchen sink. What role are you wanting to perform onboard? This is the best place to start and then Trilogy can guide you further from there.

And about how much money should I save for accommodation?

We recommend that you have R80 000 available for food, accommodation and transport while looking for a job, this is to cover 3 months and is also the amount you will need to show you have or have access to when applying for a visa, but also a good, safe amount to have available.

Do you know how long it takes in general to get a job?

This is a very hard questions to answer as it depends on so many variables and ultimately you. Sometimes people get a job in the first week, while other times it can take up to 3 months. There are certainly certain things you can do to improve your chances and conversely things you can do to damage your chances. Book an information session to get more information on this and learn what the best methods are for securing yourself work.

How long would I need accommodation for?

We suggest you book into a crew house for your first 2 weeks, that way you have guaranteed accommodation. After that you may find work or other options through people you meet while there.

Must I organise my accommodation before I move to Antibes?

Yes – and if you plan to go anytime from March to July we suggest booking as soon as possible, as it is the busiest time of year for crew looking for work so accommodation becomes booked quickly.

3. Thabiso M, Hermanus:

I’ve heard it’s harder for us with South African passports? Is that true?

Yes – it can be, but we always say it’s your attitude that gets you the role. So, while some roles may be closed to you there are lots of others that are open and if you are willing to embrace this from the beginning you will be successful.

What should I do to make it work with my SA passport?

Make sure you know the rules and regulations that apply to you, be responsible for your own visas and understand what you can and can’t do on the visas. Make sure you keep on top of it and sort things out with ample time to spare. There are 1000’s of South Africans in the industry so you can make it work.

How do we work on a boat with our passports? Would it be better for me to try find a job in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean?

This is entirely up to you and your situation, it is easier to look for work in the Med, but that doesn’t mean lots of South Africans don’t get jobs in the Caribbean each year. The infrastructure is just more easily and economically navigated in the Med.

Which one is easier for South Africans? Is Antibes the main place to go in the Med?

It is one of the hubs, but you can also try Mallorca in Spain and Italy is also an option as well.

I’m 19. What kind of courses should I be doing to increase my chances of getting a job on a superyacht? Are all the courses in SA in Durban and Cape Town? About how much money do the courses cost?

What role do you want to do onboard? There are different courses for different departments. The basic course everyone needs is STCW 10. All courses can be done in either Durban or Cape Town. Cost depends on the course you do. Please contact Trilogy for further specific advice.

5. Bella T, Cape Town:

I’ve seen on Facebook groups where they tell you to send in your CV. Does my CV need to be different to a ‘normal’ one?

Yes – it is different to a normal CV and it needs to be laid out in a very specific way. It needs to include a picture of yourself and be limited to 2 pages. You should also have 3 of your most recent referees who can be contacted by phone and email.

Is there anything in particular that I should include in my CV to help make me more employable?

Have you completed all your courses? As you will need these before you can apply to work at Sea. Get in touch with Trilogy to help guide you more and discuss your CV layout in more detail.

I’ve heard South Africans are not that popular on boats.

This is not uniquely specific to South Africans, all nationalities have their fans and their critics, but what can be a challenge for us is our passport and visa requirements. This is where you may see preference given to other nationalities.

What has given us a bad name?

What has in the past played against us are people who go over and aren’t serious about looking for work and just party causing trouble in bars and other social areas. Or have an expectant attitude that they are entitled to a job and then get belligerent when they aren’t given the job! Some people forget the good manners and social conduct we are brought up with here in South Africa and seem to leave it in the airport when they leave South Africa.

I’ve also got lots of friends that do work on boats though, and they’re South African. So is there anything I need to say during my interview that could put their minds at rest about me being South African?

You can take responsibility for the challenges that face us, i.e. visas and show understanding of your visas and their requirements. Showing a respectful and humble attitude towards everyone, and not just in your interview, is important.

Remember you are your product and you are a walking advert for yourself so even when you are out and about you never know who you may meet or who is sitting in the corner of the bar. If you are interested in finding out more an information talk with Trilogy can certainly help.

7. Justin B, Knysna:

I did my Yacht Masters in Cape Town and spent seven months in Antibes – I walked the docks, I went to recruitment agencies and I lived on Facebook (waiting for new jobs to show) – but apart from day work, I never got a single permanent job offer. In fact on one boat, I got my friend some day work too – and he got an offer! I worked hard. What did I do wrong?

Sounds like you worked really hard at getting a job and without chatting to you further it would be hard to say what the reason was, sometimes it’s just the roll of the dice. But there could be a few other reasons, again without discussing it with you directly it is hard to pinpoint.

I’m back home with my parents in SA now, but I want to head back to Antibes next year. Last time I arrived in February. Was that too early?

Feb is a bit early, maybe consider going in April/May, did your visa run out? Maybe this was the reason you were also passed over; your visa was expiring too soon.

What would you recommend is the best time to arrive? Was my CV full of too much day work – could that have put people off?

Not necessarily, did you ever get called back for day work by the same boat? Did you ask for references from your daywork? Also did you ever ask for feedback? If anything, this should be a good sign. Maybe it just wasn’t your year. Please contact Trilogy directly so we can help you further and look at what could be another approach for the future.

8. Ursula R.:

I started working in the industry this year. I told a friend who’s a chief stew how much I’m earning, and she said it’s too low. She said you shouldn’t accept anything less than €2,500 on boats here in France, no matter what the size. Is that true?

This is a tricky question and not always so straight forward to answer. The size of yacht will dictate the salary to a certain extent, the base minimum should never be below €2 000 and while there are boats that pay less, there is a big push for crew to not accept low salaries out of desperation or because they don’t know any better as this then allows boats to underpay crew and continues a vicious circle.

It is generally accepted that the industry average for new crew to the industry is €2 000 – €2 800 and of course there are lots of exceptions to this. Please also remember that there is always a difference in wages from sailing to motor yachts as well as from private to charter.

Please help me. I’m desperate to spend four years abroad and then come back to South Africa and with a lump sum to invest in property. So even though I’m partly doing this to see the world, make new friends blah blah, my main mission is to earn as much as possible. Do you know how much money approximately is needed to get a job i.e. the courses, the flights, the rent until I get a job.

It is usually recommended that you budget around R80 000 to get all your courses and find a job. This number can go up or down depending on what role you want to take on, how good you are at budgeting and how long it takes you to get a job.

Are there any dos and don’ts with recruitment agencies?

Very simple, be polite and treat them as you would a potential employer, as they are the people who could potentially get you a job. Theirs is a very cut-throat market and so they don’t have time for people who don’t listen to them or don’t get back to them promptly. They may not always afford you the same response, but they aren’t trying to get a job, you are. Show up on time, dress nicely, be polite, be diligent and communicate with them. You may not get a job through them this time, but if they remember you for all the right reasons, they may call you for one next time.

Is that the best way to get work, or should you socialise (I’ve heard there are hangouts in Antibes) or apply directly to boats?

You should do it all! Getting your first job is hard work and something you need to work at every day. Register with the crew agents, network, socialize (but keep it tidy!) and put every line you have in the water, that’s how you will catch a fish.

About how much do you think I could expect to save in four years?

This is entirely dependent on the type of job you will get. But work on a base salary of €2000 – €2500 a month and that will give you the minimum range.

Are there any ‘tricks’ you could share on how to ensure a successful stint?

Remember this is a professional industry, so act like a professional. Don’t expect people to “give” you a job because you are there, you are your own product and a walking advert for yourself. Be prepared to work hard to make sure you present the right attitude and work ethic.

Also, do your courses and make sure you do all your research into getting the right courses under your belt, some training providers will sell you everything and the kitchen sink, also not all training providers are created equal, make sure they are internationally recognized and accredited.

Be wary of anyone who tells you that international accreditation is not taken seriously by Captains and Chief Stews. Give Trilogy a call for more advice and information on the best route to getting yourself a job, they are internationally accredited training providers and have a 100% success rate for people going through their courses.

10. From Luke (a concerned South African captain, who’s been in the industry for 20 years):

It seems as if there are many Saffas out here and so many have no idea what to do, where to go and are badly prepared for this industry. For the young green guys, I wish there was a seminar or perhaps a decent conduit for them to gain some insight into this very bizarre industry. From visas alone it is a very difficult nut to crack into, then you have your pre-required courses and lodging once you get here to Europe.

We do have companies who specialize in this and are working very hard to help South Africans navigate this and enter into the industry with the right attitude and knowledge. Luke, we would love to chat with you further and hear what you think is important as a Captain, that way we can make sure we are always giving the best advice. Please contact Trilogy Luxury Training if you are willing to do so, it would be a pleasure to hear from you.

11. Moses L:

Okay, I have many, many questions. How much money should I come over with?

We suggest R50 000 – R80 000

What happens when my Schengen visa expires if I’m on a boat in the middle of the ocean???

You can organise a transit visa in your next port to leave and renew it.

Where do I apply for a job – what’s the most reliable place?

There are many places, Antibes and Mallorca are always popular in the Med as starting places.

What’s the best experience you could get – to work on a smaller or huge boat?

Both have pros and cons and for your first job it can often be a case of beggars can’t be choosers. We recommend that you at least work with another experienced person for your first job to get a good start.

I’ve heard they’re called yachts, superyachts or megayachts? True?

All true, it often refers to their size, but you can call them any of those. Superyacht is the most common term used in the industry and covers all 3.

How many years does it normally take to move from deckhand to captain?

This is entirely up to the individual, and how quickly they are able to get their sea time (hours at sea) you need to meet certain time frames to be able to progress. Finances are also a factor as the courses are expensive and often you have to take time off to get them done.

Can I apply for jobs from South Africa?

Yes, but it is not recommended as employers aren’t always happy to employ you from so far away. Saying that it has been known to happen on occasion.

Can I use my South African bank account or is it better to get an overseas bank account? What about e-banking?

Yes, you can, but it is a good idea to get one overseas, purely as it will cost you less in exchange rates. You can get one set-up with Standard Bank Offshore here in South Africa before you go so that you are all set. All the big banks now offer e-banking so it is also an option.

Is that better? Do I need an accountant?

Yes, and a specialized one at that, Seafarers Global is the best with regards to dealing with Seafarers tax.

Seafarer Tax Questions:

What are the requirements for South Africans working abroad but still residents of SA, to pay tax? And what does one have to do regarding tax status etc. – are we required to complete annual tax returns? What are the responsibilities and requirements?

There is a large misconception amongst seafarers that they need not file tax returns annually.

The truth is: South African Seafarers/tax residents working abroad you are legally required to submit tax returns to SARS every year and declare all South African sourced income (if applicable) as well as all foreign earnings.

There are three main exemptions that a South African Seafarer can claim which will either fully exempt your foreign income or exempt a portion of your foreign income(the latter exemption changes to only exempt R1mil from 1 March 2020, it currently exempts all foreign employment income if all requirements are met). The exemption that will be claimed will be based on which criteria’s you meet.

How can I tell if my employment agreement is correct and that I can qualify for the tax exemption from SARS?

It is best to have your contracted reviewed by an expert. SARS is very specific when it comes to being an independent contractor – Your foreign earned income will not be exempt if on an independent contractor agreement. Seafarers global have a good team which does an in-depth review of employment contracts to see whether they meet the requirements.

I was under the impression that working offshore was tax-free?

South African Seafarers/tax residents working abroad you are legally required to submit tax returns to SARS every year and declare all South African sourced income (if applicable) as well as all foreign earnings. There are three main exemptions that a South African Seafarer can claim which will either fully exempt your foreign income or exempt a portion of your foreign income (the latter exemption changes to only exempt R1 mil from 1 March 2020, it currently exempts all foreign employment income if all requirements are met)The exemption that will be claimed will be based on which criteria’s you meet.

Below are the three exemption that a Seafarer can claim:

  • Section 10(1)(o)(i)(aa) of the Act (“the first seafarer exemption”) – this exemption relates to officers or crew members on board a vessel, for foreign employment, which includes the international transportation of passengers/goods for reward. Meeting the requirements of this exemption allows for full exemption from tax in SA on the foreign employment income earned;
  • Section 10(1)(o)(i)(bb) of the Act (“the second seafarer exemption”) – this exemption relates to officers or crew members on board a vessel, and that vessel is engaged in prospecting, exploration or mining of minerals, or production of minerals, from the seabed outside of South Africa. This exemption only relates to those seafarers solely employed for the safe passage or navigation of the vessel. Meeting the requirements of this exemption allows for full exemption from tax in SA on the foreign employment income earned. (not relevant to superyacht crew); and
  • Section 10(1)(o)(ii) of the Act (“the expat exemption”) – this is the exemption that applies to South African taxpayers who earn foreign employment income and meet the requirements thereof. This has been amended, with the effective date of the amendment being 1 March 2020, whereby only the first R1 million can be exempted with the surplus being taxable in SA.

There is a lot of talk about this expat tax and the guys are sceptical that it will even work. How will SARS ever find out about our offshore earnings?

The reality is that as a result of the amendment to the expat tax law commencing March 2020, SARS is now auditing all expat tax profiles ensuring that all South African expats are fully compliant and the disclosure of all worldwide income is being declared. This is actioned with the assistance of the Common Reporting Standards (see link below). The CRS assists SARS with information sharing in regards to all your foreign income which is then cross-referenced to see if your returns reflect the same. I, therefore, advise that full transparency and compliance is had with regards to the declaration of all your worldwide income.

https://www.sars.gov.za/ClientSegments/Businesses/Mod3rdParty/AEOI/Pages/How-does-CRS-reporting-work.aspx

I have worked on superyachts in the Antibes for a couple of years, but never paid tax and to be honest, did not think of the consequences, what should I do?

You firstly need to determine your tax residency status. If you are deemed to be a South African tax resident, then you will need to rectify your compliance with SARS sooner rather than later.

  • Register for a South African tax number if you don’t already have one;
  • File backdated returns correctly for the years you have been working abroad (5 years max);
  • File a tax return annually going forward.

We would suggest acquiring the services of an expat tax specialist who understands the tax exemptions around seafarers.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter)

Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter

Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter)

Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week

Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter

Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter)

Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000

Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
