New Hurricane Deck Boats

Since 1974, Hurricane has been the driving force in deck boat innovation and continues today to be the largest and oldest name in family style deckboats. With more than 74% market share in outboard deckboats and a dominant share of the overall deckboat category, Hurricane has proven for years to its customers that there is no better type of boat for versatility and fun.

Not everyone wants to fish or ski or wakeboard or cruise, or entertain up to 17 friends - some people want to do it all, and every Hurricane boat delivers this kind of versatility, and therefore value.

SunDeck Models: Super sleek and sporty. All SunDeck models feature a walk-through, wrap around windshield, plenty of storage for gear and lots of room to entertain family and friends.

SunDeck Sport Models: No one gets left behind in a SunDeck Sport. Spacious, open floorplans and well thought out storage areas ensure organized comfort.

FunDeck Models: Have your pontoon and Category 5 Hull too. The FunDeck series gives you the luxury and comfort of a pontoon and the performance of a deck boat.

How Do You Protect A Yacht From A Hurricane?

By Robert Bowman | Posted On Jun 23, 2022 Updated On Nov 10, 2022

If you live anywhere along the coast, preparing for hurricane season is a normal, annual occurrence that becomes a bit more challenging when you also own a boat. If you're a yacht owner and cannot easily secure or move your vessel, the stakes become even higher. Anyone in doubt of the severity of the damage done to boats need only look back to Hurricane Sandy, which damaged more than 65,000 vessels according to Boat U.S.

Forecasters for the Climate Prediction Center, a part of the NOAA , announced that there is a 65% chance for a more active hurricane season from June 1st through November 30th. If you are new to owning a yacht or haven't had to deal with an active hurricane season before, below is advice we have compiled from the experts.

What To Know About Hurricanes & Yacht Insurance

If there is anyone that knows a thing or two about hurricanes and the rules about your boat insurance, it's Michael Boyer, Senior Vice President of the Marine Division at Brown & Brown Insurance. Michael has been specializing in marine insurance for years and knows how to navigate hurricane season. We asked Michael 3 of the most common questions associated with boat insurance and hurricanes.

sportfish damaged during hurricane

1.) What should boat owners do with their insurance company before hurricane season?

It is imperative that they review their policies, specifically their storm plan so that they can be reminded of what is required of them in the event of a storm. Some policies require that the vessel be hauled out of the water and put on the hard, while other policies have warranties that the vessel may not be more than 100 miles from the scheduled location. Additionally, most policies have a hurricane haul-out reimbursement coverage that will reimburse the insured up to a certain amount for the costs to haul the vessel out of the water. Some go as far as to help pay for additional lines, anchors, and even the labor cost associated with preparing the vessel for the impending storm.

2.) If a storm is coming, what should a yacht owner do in regards to their insurance company?

The insured should be sure to stow all canvas & upholstery items and add additional lines. If the boat is to be hauled, the insured should make sure that they provide the yard with adequate time to haul the vessel. They need to remember that these yards will cease operations prior to the storm approaching, so if the insured waits too long they may be out of luck. It is important to note, many of the yards require a contract in place prior to hurricane season and if the insured does not have one, they may be forced to leave their vessel in the water. Yards fill up quickly and there isn’t enough room to accommodate all vessels.

3.) If a boat owner does incur a loss, what are the first things they should do?

In the event of a loss, it is important to document all damage by taking as many as thorough photos as possible. Additionally, it is the insured’s responsibility to take whatever reasonable measures possible to avoid further loss. After both of these requirements have been satisfied, it is important to contact your agent and file a claim. Patience will be needed as the carriers will be handling a high volume of claims if the storm is severe.

What Advice Do Our Professional Yacht Brokers Give Their Clients?

United yacht brokers

Many of our professional yacht brokers at UYS have been in the business for decades and have gone through countless storms, all while advising their clients on what to do. Who better to call than the person that sold you the boat to ask for advice?

Greg Graham : It’s been my experience that the insurance company’s want to have their insured assets out of the water if possible because the biggest potential issue when a storm hits is the boat sinking. They have a much better chance of sinking than they do falling off of the jack stands on the pavement. With the particular client I personally manage, if a storm is eminent we try to haul all 4 inboard boats and put the outboard boat on the trailer. The hauled boats have their eisenglass and out riggers removed and the exterior hatches taped up…then we pray a lot. lol

Michele Renick : I always keep several update-to-date storm preparedness checklists and guide that I can forward to my clients during this time of year. Some of them are from organizations like Boat U.S. and service yards like Hinckley. Together, the checklists give you a really thorough plan on what to do. Things like checking all AC units, topping fuel off in all machinery, double-checking all hatches, etc. are included. Of course, the best advice to give is to just get ahead of any potential threats.

Christopher Cooke : The best advice I ever give my clients is to buy a pre-paid haul out plan. This is the only way to make completely sure you have a haul out and a spot. It usually costs 50% of a haul out and prep price. You don't get it back if nothing happens, but you are 100% guaranteed a spot. Better safe than sorry with an investment like a yacht.

River Forest Yachting Centers Are A Preferred Partner Of United Yacht Sales

river forest yacht center hurricane plan

The Hurricane Club at the River Forest Yachting Center is a feature every yacht owner should consider. The Hurricane Club was created to offer boat owners a place to bring their yacht or store their boat during hurricane conditions. "By joining the Hurricane Club®, you will be entitled to wet or dry boat storage in RFYC’s hurricane-protected freshwater locations in both Stuart and LaBelle. Both locations strap the boats down to aircraft tie-down cleats in LaBelle and augers in Stuart. These inland locations, with convenient access to the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Okeechobee and the Gulf of Mexico, make RFYC the ideal solution for hurricane refuge."

Do Finance Companies Stop Lending Money During A Hurricane Threat?

Our preferred marine finance partner, Shana White of OceanPoint Marine Lending has helped clients finance their boat purchase before, during, and after hurricanes. "Financing a yacht is generally not affected during hurricane season," says Shana. "The only time it becomes a burden is when there is a hurricane in the area and they have to shut off all binding of insurance policies. This means we cannot close on the loan until after it passes and insurance resumes.

United Yacht Sales has over 250 yacht brokers worldwide creating the largest network of boat buyers and sellers in the industry. Together with our preferred boating partners , we can help you with every aspect of your boating life from the purchase process, listing it for sale eventually, and continuing the relationship onward. Our focus is always on our clients, not new boats or trade-in boats we own. If you ever have a question about buying or selling a yacht, don't hesitate to call our friendly staff at 1-772-463-3131.

Hurricane Preparation and Readiness

Hurricane preparation for yachts is a tremendously important aspect of yacht maintenance. South Florida yachts are particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of hurricanes, due to the area’s robust hurricane season.

Yacht Management South Florida can keep your boat safe and secure during a hurricane at our Fort Lauderdale marina. We offer both offshore slips and onshore storage.

Email or call to discuss our dock contract options and hurricane provisions: (954) 941-6447

Protected Fort Lauderdale Marina

The closer to shore your yacht is during a hurricane, the safer it is likely to be. Our Fort Lauderdale marina is in an inland waterway sheltered on both sides by dense vegetation, making it especially secure from the harsh weather conditions that come with hurricanes.

We recommend reserving a dock slip at our Fort Lauderdale marina or hauling your boat ashore and storing it in our full-service boatyard .

Hurricane Preparation and Readiness Separator

South Florida yachts are particularly vulnerable to the damaging effects of hurricanes, due to the area’s robust hurricane season.

Comprehensive Hurricane Plan

Our Fort Lauderdale marina yacht management experts will go over your yacht’s hurricane plan with you and offer suggestions for improvement. This should be done well in advance of a hurricane warning, and preferably before the start of the hurricane season.

We offer several marina and dock contracts that will accommodate to the requirements of your yacht in South Florida. Additionally, our full set of boatyard and dockside yacht maintenance services can meet all your yacht maintenance, storing, and protection needs both during hurricane season and outside of it.

Hurricane Provisions We Offer

Our marina managers and dock attendants will ensure your boat is securely moored and anchored to withstand a hurricane’s winds and storm surge. Our hurricane preparation and readiness checklist is comprehensive, which includes:

  • Docking boat to sturdy and maintained docks with tall pilings
  • Hauling boat ashore, securing on jack stands and strapping to an anchor point
  • Removal of canvas, sails, dinghies, and other removable items on deck to reduce windage
  • Mooring with extra lines and longer lines to account for higher winds and water levels

Our goal is to ensure our clients’ yachts stay safe, secure, and free from damage during a hurricane. Visit our South Florida marina to learn more about our hurricane preparation for yachts and other readiness services.

Hurricane season 2021 breaks new records

Superyachtnews speaks with adrian mccourt, group chief engineer at munich re mccourt….

Image for article Hurricane season 2021 breaks new records

As the 2021 Atlantic storm season swings into full gear, the prediction of an active season appears to have come to fruition. The ongoing La Niña weather pattern has held, and the Atlantic Ocean temperatures, especially in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, are higher than average. The fuel that drives storms appears abundant, and the conditions in place for another busy storm season.

Records set and records broken appears to be the recent trend for storm system frequency and severity. Phillip Klotzbach, Meteorologist at CSU (Colorado State University), specializing in Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts, has noted that according to their analysis, 2020 was the 5th consecutive year of above-average accumulated hurricane energy for the Atlantic region. The formation of Tropical Storm Elsa on July 1st marked the 5th named storm of the season. To give context, this broke the record (set last year) for the earliest date where the 5th storm of the season is named and is a full 6 weeks earlier than the average since records began.

Adrian McCourt, group chief engineer at Munich RE McCourt, has been amalgamating and disseminating key data from multiple metrological sources to the marine industry for nearly 15 years. SuperyachtNews speaks with McCourt about how the upcoming season is shaping, relative to predictions, and how it may affect superyachts in the region. ‘This will be another very active season; how this will impact the superyacht market is a tough question to answer. For example, the cruise lines. Come what may (putting aside Covid the related shut-down), they operate out of Miami throughout the season. Big powerful stabilised ships and smart planning can generally skirt cyclones without too much disruption. The same goes for the larger yachts.’

After the devastating  2017 hurricane season, the loss of life and property, and the observed trend in increased storm severity, many had expected a superyacht migration away from the Caribbean. However, this is not what McCourt has observed. ‘I don’t know of any Caribbean based yachts whose owners have decided to shift to the Med this year because there is an active season expected. Those who usually stay in the Caribbean are still staying there. The smaller yachts permanently based in the region aren’t crossing the Atlantic either, but relying on good forecasting and planning.’

The Superyacht Agency's historical data supports McCourt's assertion, with a slight increase in superyachts remaining in the Caribbean 2015-2019.

Forecasting and the ability to avoid these damaging weather systems has been a game of cat and mouse that those who wish to remain in the hurricane-affected areas have played for a long time. A slight change in circumstances and the full force of Hurricane Irma may also have hit West Palm Beach in 2017, and we may have had an entirely different damage toll to the superyacht sector and rippling consequences across the industry. Still, the last 5 years have changed attitudes, as McCourt highlights. ‘The eye-watering losses over the last five years have taken a bite out of underwriters’ capital, and more risk management is expected of the larger marinas and repair yards, for example. Hurricane response plans, for example, were once kept in a forgotten manual on a dusty shelf but are now a condition of cover for many and need to be effective.’

As McCourt points out, weather system prediction and planning is still at the forefront of safe superyacht operation in the Caribbean in the summer months.  Yachts are larger, more powerful and more connected today than at any point in history. As McCourt also highlights, the reach of observational technology is impressive but may have overrun the scope of usable predictability.   ‘Owners expect Captains to be savvy about storm management  - and many I speak to are a long way ahead of me. Captains or owners of boats in dry-dock or repair yards in Florida or other hurricane exposed locations to take a very long view at approaching cyclones, far longer (and probably less reliable) than the data I am looking at. It is impossible to predict what a cyclone will do when it forms in the eastern Atlantic, but I am still asked.’

2021 is not predicted to reach the devastating levels of the 2020 hurricane season, where 30 named storms formed, and 11 made landfall in the United States alone. Hopefully, these predictions are correct, however with the generalised trend towards stronger and more forceful storms, without careful planning and consultation with expert advice, the cat and mouse game in the Caribbean may become a safe harbour too far.

Hurricane season in exotic yachting destinations

  • Hurricane season in exotic yachting destinations

Few meteorological phenomena have such devastating effects as a hurricane. It is no surprise that its name has become synonymous with speed, suddenness, or an act or behaviour that wreaks havoc. For this is precisely the nature of a hurricane, which can raise the sea up into enormous waves, push masses of water deep inland and flatten entire cities with a violent wind. Learn how a hurricane forms, where and when it occurs most often, how long it lasts and why it is, along with earthquakes, the most destructive natural disaster. Plus, we'll advise you on when to plan your voyage in exotic countries, and which destinations to avoid during hurricane season.

What is a hurricane?

In meteorological terms, a hurricane is a tropical cyclone — a storm system rapidly rotating around an area of low pressure typical in tropical regions during different seasons, especially in the Caribbean , around Australia, Southeast Asia and the east coast of North America. About 80 tropical storms occur worldwide each year , of which less than half occur in the Americas, a quarter in South or Southeast Asia and the rest in the South Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Glossary: What is a low-pressure system (cyclone)? A low-pressure system (cyclone) is a meteorological term that refers to an area in the atmosphere whose centre is at a lower pressure than its surroundings. This pressure formation rotates counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. The arrival of a low-pressure system usually brings with it severe weather with overcast skies, precipitation and strong winds.

Tropical cyclones have different names in different parts of the world.

  • Hurricane — North Atlantic Ocean
  • Cyclone — North Indian Ocean, Australia and adjacent areas in the southern hemisphere
  • Typhoon — Pacific Ocean, South China Sea, Pacific Ocean
  • Cordonazo — hurricane winds on the west coast of Central America and Mexico

When is hurricane season?

Hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and ends on November 30 in the Northern Hemisphere , and runs from November to May in the Southern Hemisphere . Hurricanes are given female and male names and an alphabetical list of hurricanes is produced by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Hurricanes recur at regular intervals, although their formation and the eventual development of other tropical storms always depend on the current meteorological conditions.

How does a hurricane form? — the 4 stages of development

Tropical cyclones have 4 clearly defined phases of formation. It all begins with a tropical disturbance when cumulus clouds form but the air has not yet rotated. As the storm grows higher and larger, it becomes a tropical depression , characterised by decreasing pressure and winds increasing up to about 18 m/s (63 km/h). Once sustained winds reach 34 knots, the depression is defined as a tropical storm , which is not yet destructive but can cause significant damage. This is followed by a peak stage , which is divided into five categories . At the end of the last stage, the hurricane then moves over land, where it begins to break up and weaken because it is no longer fed by moist air from the ocean. Condensation over land then causes heavy torrential rains, leading to flooding and landslides.

If you are planning to go yachting in an exotic destination , it is always important to know if there is an increased risk of hurricanes at that time and to keep a close eye on the weather outlook and the current forecast . And if a hurricane has already swept through a country you are visiting, expect that recovery of damaged infrastructure in the area is not immediate, including electricity, drinking water, food, etc. The ability to use credit cards or withdraw cash from ATMs can also be an issue. How quickly the return back to normal depends on the strength of the disaster and the economic development of the affected region.

YACHTING.COM TIP: As the colder months approach in Europe, sailors are increasingly unwilling to accept that the yachting season is coming to an end and are changing tack in search of sailing opportunities in warmer climes. If this is you, we highly recommend  exotic locations , such as the  Caribbean , the  Seychelles  and  Thailand , where pristine beaches and bays, stunning natural beauty and a magical underwater world await. And there's no need to be apprehensive about trying out exotic destinations — in  our complete guide to exotic sailing holidays ,  you'll find all the information you need to know before setting sail.

Where and how do hurricanes form?

The most favourable conditions for the formation of tropical cyclones are between 5° and 15° latitude , where the Coriolis effect (or Coriolis force) has sufficient centripetal force and the ocean has a suitable temperature. As a result, hurricanes are almost non-existent at the equator but it is the Coriolis effect that causes hurricanes to rotate to the left in the northern hemisphere and to the right in the southern hemisphere. What drives a hurricane is the energy created when water vapour condenses as warm air from the sea meets cooler air above the surface and the water is converted from a gas to a liquid again.

Glossary: What is the Coriolis effect?  The Coriolis effect is the inertial force caused by the rotation and motion of the Earth. It is manifested by the deviation of straight-line moving objects from their original direction. The direction of the deflection is then determined by whether the object is moving away from or towards the centre of rotation.

Tropical cyclone: hurricane, typhoon, cyclonic storm...

There are several types of cyclones, distinguished by their wind speed. It is referred to as  a tropical cyclone, hurricane or typhoon when the wind speed exceeds 33 m/s or 118 km/h . This is also the highest point on the Beaufort scale (12). The five-point Saffir-Simpson scale , which is based on the maximum average wind speed, is then used to determine the strength of a hurricane. The strongest category is 5 but these are really the exceptions. For example, Hurricane Camille , which struck the Virginia coast in 1969, or Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which struck New Orleans and the surrounding area, were devastating.

  • Category 2 : winds up to 49 m/s (177 km/h), waves up to 2.6 m, moderate damage (damaged roofs, billboards, damaged vegetation)
  • Category 3 : winds up to 58 m/s (209 km/h), waves up to 3.7 m, extensive damage (damaged smaller houses, vehicles, flooding)
  • Category 4 : winds up to 69 m/s (249 km/h), waves up to 6.4 m, extreme damage (damaged house structures, collapsed roofs, flooding, high risk in populated areas)
  • Category 5 : winds above 70 m/s (252 km/h), waves over 6.4 m, catastrophic damage (destruction of buildings, disruption of infrastructure, loss of life)

Naming hurricanes: what are the rules?

Humankind has been dealing with tropical storms, hurricanes and other destructive forces since the beginning of time. In order to make some kind of sense of unpredictable natural phenomena, humans began to give them names. In the past , hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones and storms were named after the places where they caused major damage or the saints who were supposed to protect them.

Why did hurricanes only have female names?

Sometime later, tropical cyclones were named after the girlfriends and wives  of the men who had to deal with hurricanes. This tradition was introduced by meteorologist Clement Wragge at the turn of the 19th century, and hurricanes were given female names until 2000 . In parallel, there was also a designation according to the military phonetic alphabet, which is still used today in flag designations (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, etc.).

Hurricane Irma road sign concept

In general, tropical cyclones are named according to rules set at the regional level so that in different localities you may find different lists of names. Since around the 1980s, the World Meteorological Organization introduced a new system that alternates masculine and feminine names — there are 6 alphabetical lists for Atlantic hurricanes with 21 names on each. These lists are used in rotation and recycled every 6 years. This means that in 2022, for example, the list from 2016 was used.

YACHTING.COM TIP: Stunning natural beauty, the fascinating underwater world and hospitality make French Polynesia a truly captivating place and will fulfil everything you could wish for in an exotic boat holiday. In our guide, Try sailing in an exotic paradise: all about French Polynesia , we'll give you an insight into this sailing destination in all its glory.

Names of the most destructive hurricanes are not repeated

An exception is made to honour the victims of tropical cyclones that caused enormous damage (Katrina or Irma, for example) and the name is retired from the list and replaced so that each list still contains 21 names. In the event that more than 21 hurricanes hit in any given year, the Greek alphabet is used. Unfortunately, this situation is occurring more and more each year due to global warming and rising ocean water temperatures. Scientists believe, however, based on the sediments on the seabed, that hurricanes were significantly more common between about 1,000 and 2,000 years ago than they are today.

Atlantic Hurricane Season 2022: Storm Overview

Tropical storm alex.

In late May 2022, a low-pressure system formed near the Yucatan Peninsula, influenced by the aftershocks of Hurricane Agatha. The Gulf of Mexico, South Florida, Cuba and Bermuda were affected.

Tropical Storm Bonnie

In early June 2022, a cyclone hit the North Carolina area, one of the few to make the transition from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.

Tropical Storm Colin

In early June 2022, a low-pressure system formed off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, which later hit North Carolina. This was a relatively mild storm with more intense flooding.

Hurricane Danielle

In late August, the first hurricane of 2022 formed in the Atlantic, with a magnitude of 1 to 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, mainly affecting the Azores.

Hurricane Earl

The first powerful hurricane of 2022 formed in early September, narrowly missing Bermuda and hitting Belize, where it blew off the roofs of houses, snapped trees and caused flooding.

Hurricane Fiona

In mid-September, Hurricane Fiona hit the Atlantic coast of Canada, which was exceptional in that it retained its strength from the tropics to far north. It was a very destructive cyclone with torrential rains that tore down entire houses.

Tropical Storm Gaston

In late September 2022, a tropical storm formed in the mid-Atlantic, and while it caused some inconvenience along the coast of South America, it remained mostly over the ocean.

A view of the village of São Roque on the Azores Islands in Portugal after the passage of Hurricane Alex

Tropical Storm Hermine

Tropical Storm Hermine formed at about the same time as Tropical Storm Gaston. It hit the Canary Islands, but as expected, it did not cause any damage to property.

Hurricane Ian

The hurricane that swept across the United States in September–October 2022 hit Florida hardest. In addition to the crushing impact on infrastructure, several dozen people lost their lives. The states of North and South Carolina were also affected.

Hurricane Julia

In the first half of October 2022, Hurricane Julia made landfall on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Although in the first hours the cyclone caused major damage due to torrential rains, flooding and landslides, it later weakened to a tropical storm.

Tropical Storm Karl

In the second half of October 2022, a pressure low formed off the coast of Venezuela that alternated in strength between a tropical storm and a hurricane, hitting Mexico the hardest.

Hurricane Lisa

In early November 2022, Hurricane Lisa swept across Belize, Guatemala and southeastern Mexico with a Category 1  hurricane force. The storm was accompanied by winds of 140 km per hour.

How to predict a hurricane

As with all meteorological phenomena, a number of aspects are taken into consideration to make the most accurate forecast model for hurricanes and tropical storms. Because of the way cyclones form, changes in pressure, temperature, airflow, ocean currents, seasons and many other variables must be mapped regularly and over a long period of time.

Monitor the weather forecasts

In many ways, modern technology makes weather forecasting much easier. There is an incredible amount of data available from all sorts of sensors, vantage points, satellite imagery and the like that the human mind would not be able to process. This data is processed by the world's most powerful computers, which are able to incorporate many years of observations, information gathering and actual variables into their projections.

Hurricanes can occur outside of hurricane season

If you're planning a sail in an exotic destination , you'll not only be interested in the current forecast for a few hours or days ahead, but you'll also want to make sure that you don't arrive in that location during a hurricane. While hurricanes and tropical storms do not recur at precise times, it is very possible to determine if there is a risk based on long-term observation. It is very similar to planning a holiday in countries where dry and monsoon seasons alternate. No one can predict the exact day and time when the monsoon will come or go, but everyone knows from experience that some months are rainy and some are sunny.

To determine whether or not to sail in your chosen destination simply use one of the many forecast maps or apps to get an indication of whether you'll be cruising in beautiful sunny weather or sheltering from dangerously strong winds and torrential rain. Choosing the wrong time of year can mean that instead of an idyllic sailing experience, you'll be glad you're not losing the roof over your head.

Where to find the latest hurricane information

Reliable forecasts and long-term predictions are offered by many meteorological organisations, some of which focus directly on tracking the formation of cyclones, whether it is a tropical storm or a hurricane.
