Her interior is styled by Italian designer design house Perini Navi and she was delivered to her owner in March 2007. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Perini Navi and she was last refitted in 2022.

Segelyachten sind Sport- oder Freizeitboote mit festem Kiel, die mit einem Deck, einer Kajüte (inkl. Kojen), meistens auch Pantry und Nasszelle ausgestattet sind. Ihr Rumpf ist aus Holz, Stahl, Aluminium, GFK oder anderen Verbundstoffen gefertigt. Noch vor 50 Jahren galt die Regel, dass Yachten erst ab einer Länge von über 12 Metern als solche bezeichnet werden dürfen. Heute ist auch das 5,50 m kurze Kajütboot für Küstengewässer schon eine Yacht.

Was ist denn nun eine Segelyacht?

Die «Yacht» unter den Segelbooten ist begrifflich nur oberflächlich einzukreisen. Geschichtlich betrachtet, zierte die Yacht mit diversen Schreibweisen die unterschiedlichsten Schiffs- und Bootstypen. Niederländische, dreimastige «Jagten» mit Spiegelheck, rahgetakeltem Fock- und Großmast aus dem 17. Jahrhundert gelten ebenso als Ursprung des heutigen Begriffs wie herrschaftliche Segelschiffe (Herenjacht), die höhergestellten Persönlichkeiten als Reise- und Lustfahrzeug dienten. In Dänemark wurde schließlich ein Frachtschifftyp mit der (englischen) Bezeichnung «Yacht» entwickelt, der bis ins späte 19. Jahrhundert in der Ost- und Nordsee zum Einsatz kam.

Der Begriff Yacht

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts etablierte sich die Bezeichnung «Yacht» für luxuriös ausgestattete, meist bildschöne Segelboote mit festem Kiel, mehreren Kabinen, einem Salon und WC an Bord. Damals wurde die Yacht als solche noch an ihrer Länge (ab ca. 12 Meter) und einem gewissen Luxus definiert. Mit steigender Serienproduktion in der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts bezeichneten schließlich immer mehr Eigner ihr Kajütsegelboot als «Yacht». Heute kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass man sich auch schon mit einem 8-Meter Kajütboot mit festem Kiel als stolzer Skipper einer Yacht fühlen und bezeichnen darf. Kurz: Segelyachten sind Sport- oder Freizeitboote mit festem Kiel, die mit einem Deck, einer Kajüte mit Kojen, meist auch Pantry und Nasszelle ausgestattet sind.

Das wichtigste Merkmal einer Segelyacht

Das vielleicht wichtigste Merkmal einer Segelyacht ist jedoch der Kiel. Auch große und edel wirkende Jollen (etwa aus Holz, aber mit aufholbarem Schwert gegen die Abdrift) werden kaum als Segelyacht bezeichnet (siehe auch Kielyacht). Segelyachten wurden früher naturgemäß aus Holz gebaut, zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts mitunter auch aus Stahl. Im modernen Serienbootsbau haben sich Verbundwerkstoffe wie GfK mittlerweile durchgesetzt. Segelyachten mit Rumpf aus Aluminium werden überwiegend nur für Expeditionen oder Abenteuer-Einsätze in Gebieten wie der Arktis oder Antarktis gebaut. Karbon (spart Gewicht) wird ausschließlich für den Bau (Rumpf, Deck, Aufbauten, Mast) von Regattasegelyachten verwendet.

Die größte Segelyacht der Welt

Größere Yachten (ab ca. 20 Meter Länge) inklusive Super- und Megasegelyachten werden häufig von semi- oder professionellen Crews gesegelt und gewartet. Obwohl nur als «Motoryacht mit Segelunterstützung» zugelassen, gilt die Segelyacht «A» mit 142, 8 Metern Länge als größte Segelyacht der Welt. Auch wenn mit ihr relativ selten richtig gesegelt werden dürfte.

Was macht eine Segelyacht aus?

• Segelyachten haben in nahezu allen Fällen einen Kiel.
• Auch eine Kajüte gehört zum Yacht-Standard.
• In Sachen Länge, Luxus und Komfort sind dem Begriff "Yacht" keine Grenzen gesetzt.
• Noch vor 50 Jahren galt die Regel, dass Yachten erst ab einer Länge von über 12 Metern als solche bezeichnet werden dürfen.
• Allgemein üblich werden heute Wasserfahrzeuge ab einer Länge von 10 Metern als Yachten bezeichnet. Wer jedoch sein 7.50-Segelboot als Yacht bezeichnen möchte, begeht damit keinen Fauxpas.
• Die Bezeichnung Yacht trifft demnach auf über 80 Prozent des weltweiten Freizeit-Bootsbestandes (außer Kleinboote und Jollen) zu!
• Segelyachten werden in der Regel aus folgenden Materialien gebaut: Holz, Stahl, GFK, Karbon, Hanffaser-Epoxy-Verbundstoffe, Ferrozement.
• Yachten werden in nahezu allen Segelbereichen eingesetzt.
• Mehrheitlich sind alle Fahrten- und Blauwasser-Segler auch Yacht-Eigner oder -Charterer.
• Wer möglichst komfortabel bis zu luxuriös segeln will.
• Auch ausgefuchste Regattasegler schwören auf ihre (für den Renneinsatz konzipierte) Segelyacht.

Sandwich construction ensures longevity.

Isophthalic acid (IPA) resins in the outer layers used during the laminating process ensure that the hull of a BAVARIA is of the highest quality. These offer effective protection against osmosis and thus promote longevity of the BAVARIA. The hull and deck of a BAVARIA is formed by sandwich construction with foam inserts. In sailing yachts the deck is reinforced with aluminium sheets where fittings are mounted. In the so‐called „marrying“ process shortly before the end of production, the deck and hull are screwed and glued together.

Solid wood troughout, yet it is light on board

Over 40 years of experience in boat building craftsmanship are behind the workmanship in the wood inside a BAVARIA. And although modern machines facilitate the boat builders’ work in their own joiner’s workshops, their sense of proportion and their know‐how in dealing with different types of wood is a daily need that only they can satisfy. Mahogany, teak, oak, walnut, chestnut or Ocean Line – a BAVARIA offers individuality and an atmosphere in which you feel comfortable, no matter what type of wood you have chosen. And every BAVARIA encompasses a perfect balance of solid wood and sturdy laminates, because in the end the weight of a BAVARIA’s interior fittings also contribute towards steady seakeeping and excellent sailing characteristics.

Every fitting, every hatch is in its proper place

Before fitting and hatch assembly on deck, the milling and drilling has to be completed. To automate these tasks, BAVARIA developed a CNC system years ago that to date is unique in the global yacht and boat building industry. The deck layout of each type of yacht and the hole patterns for standard and optional equipment are stored by means of CAD/CAM. This requires hundreds of individual operations that are already predefined in the development phase of a yacht, and then optimised. The aim of this automation process was and is to reach a consistently high quality with continuous improvement in productivity. Precise arrangement of the deck openings is crucial in ensuring subsequent sealing.

The contemporary flybridge schooner, SEA EAGLE II, nowadays SEA EAGLE, is a true sailing yacht. This 81m / 266ft  beauty immediately earned her place alongside the shipyard’s Athena in the elite club of the world’s 10 largest sailing yachts. Delivered in 2020 under the shadow of the pandemic, SEA EAGLE II’s arrival on the superyacht scene was inevitably low-key.

DATA & DIMENSIONS

SEA EAGLE is currently Royal Huisman’s largest yacht. Project 410, the 85m / 280ft sloop, will take over this title on delivery. Nearly 60 years of aluminum yacht-building experience have provided the shipyard with a level of expertise in constructing hulls of this material that few shipyards can match. This is especially true for sailing yachts of this size. The advantages are equally large: lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel-efficiency being just a few characteristics of a true sailing yacht versus a heavy, sail-assisted motor yacht.

The brief for SEA EAGLE was to create an extremely comfortable and spacious yacht with good sea keeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew. She had to offer outstanding passage-making performance so that the owner could take in as much of the world under sail as possible. She had to be a true sailor’s yacht – practical, powerful, safe and easily managed. Finally, she had to be functional, favoring simplicity and reliability over unnecessary frills.

CNB built the extraordinary yacht Chrisco (aka CNB 100) for a European couple. The yacht is carbon fiber construction to save a lot of weight for more speed. Chrisco is 600 kg lighter than it was contracted. The deckhouse includes 75 glass panels for the right lumination inside. The spacious cockpit can be shaded by a bimini to enjoy an al-fresco style onboard.

Within six years, the yacht sailed 80,000 nautical miles.

Wetzels Brown Partners from Amsterdam developed the interior design of Chrisco. It is a very light and bright interior that reflects futuristic exterior design by the Luca Brenta design office that is also responsible for the naval architecture.

The yacht has four double cabins forward while the salon and dining area are amidships. A crew area is located in the aft area.

Why an Illusion Yacht?

The hull slips easily through the water, leaving a smooth wake. There is a slight increase in wind; she receives it, considers it, accepts it with the dignity and reserve that only a heavy displacement yacht can muster, and slowly heels in response. “Back-stay in –trim main and genoa–a little cunningham–that’s enough.” As you pull strings, you catch yourself giving orders to ten imaginary crew members who obligingly leap to their stations to perform their duties while this miniature version of a 12-Meter presses the water aside and slowly accelerates, bow and stern waves building up as they would on the real thing. Weight give 12-Meters their special character, their wonderful sensation of power, their ability to carry their way forward when brought head to wind in match race pre-start maneuvers. Those feelings are faithfully reproduced in the Illusion Twelve.

There is no trace of skittishness of a 12’ dinghy; Illusion (that is the name given to the class) responds like a big boat. When you see her out of the water you realize why: She is a scaled-down 12-Meter below as well as above the waterline, with proportionally just a little more beam to accommodate the human body within her elegant shell.

The Illusion is a one-design keel-boat, based on a scaled version of Lionheart, the British 12 Meter Class yacht and designed by Jo Richards and Neil Graham in 1981. These performance single-handed boats offer superb racing in nearly any conditions, by sailors of all weights and ages – with tested racing performance up to Force 6! or between 22-27 knots. Sailing up to 40 knots has been known to happen.

Adaptive Sailing

The Illusion 12 is a one-design, single-handed keelboat featuring foot pedal steering, using a genoa with roller reefing, full trimming, including a spinnaker. Alterations to the basic designs can be made to ensure easy maneuverability, and safety for physically challenged sailors. Fro example a tiller in front of the seat rather than foot pedals to control the rudder through ropes is one example of a set up for paraplegics without use of their legs.

The Illusion Mk.2 is a one-design, duel-handed keelboat features a foredeck position using a genoa with roller reefing, full trimming, including a spinnaker, and a helmsman position including main sail trimming. No alterations to the basic designs need to be made to ensure easy maneuverability, and safety for physically challenged sailors. The boat can be sailed from the helmsman position minus the spinnaker allowing for an observer in the foredeck position.
