Racing yacht runs aground at Lyttelton days before Sail GP regatta

A 12m racing yacht has beached in Lyttelton Harbour days before Christchurch hosts the glitzy international Sail GP regatta.
The Harbourmaster’s Office at Environment Canterbury said it was notified of a recreational vessel aground near Pāua-o-Hinekotau Head, west of Te Waipapa/Diamond Harbour on Wednesday evening.
“All five crew were rescued by the Coastguard and returned safely to Lyttelton [on Wednesday] night,” said Environment Canterbury’s regional on-scene commander, Emma Parr.
The racing yacht remains aground at the base of a cliff with difficult access by foot.
The yacht has 15 litres of diesel on board, in sealed tanks, but Parr says the risk of environmental damage from its grounding is low.
“Weather conditions are not favourable today, which means that a safe recovery attempt may not be possible prior to SailGP,” she said.
Around 22,000 people are expected to flock to Lyttelton over this weekend to watch the Sail GP event.
Lyttelton Port was closed overnight as a precaution due to the vessel being unsecured and the potential of floating debris.
“The yacht has remained in the same position but is significantly damaged. It is now secure via ropes to the shore,” she said.
Environment Canterbury says it’s monitoring the situation closely and working with the owner, insurers and salvors to collect debris as required.
“There may be loose debris under the surface of the water. We are asking the public to stay well clear of this operational area,” Parr said.
The international sailing competition set for Lyttelton Habour this weekend, SailGP , will still go ahead as planned.
The grounding comes after a clam fishing trawler ran aground on Waikuku Beach on Monday.
Maritime NZ sent investigations staff to the scene to start inquiries. The investigation into the grounding is ongoing.
The Herald understands the boat has since been moved back into the water without any damage.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas
The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool
Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.
She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.
For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.
Victorious: 85 meters
Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom
Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.
For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.
She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.
Casino Royale: 72 meters
Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi
Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).
Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.
However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.
Talisman C: 70.6 meters
Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.
Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.
Joy: 70 meters
Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor
Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.
There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.
Triumph: 65.4 meters
Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat
This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.
She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Intuitive Machines' second moon mission on track for 2024
Intuitive Machines’ second moon mission is still on track to launch before the end of this year, after the company only had to make minor adjustments to the lunar lander design, executives said during an earnings call Thursday. The company made history earlier this year when it became the first commercial company to land a spacecraft on the lunar surface. Critically, the IM-2 mission will deliver NASA payloads that will search the lunar South Pole for water ice, a resource that could eventually be processed into propulsion for rockets or to support a permanent lunar astronaut habitat.

Ministry of health job losses 'cutting really deep' - psa union.
(File photo.) Photo: RNZ / Richard Tindiller
The union for public servants is warning that job cuts at the Ministry of Health means vital expertise will be lost just when the country needs it most.
Staff have been told a quarter of jobs - nearly 200 - are likely to go as the Ministry tries to find savings demanded by the government .
The PSA represents about 400 ministry staff and national secretary Kerry Davies said such a big cull was heartless and cruel.
It could also destabilise the health system, she said.
Details of exactly how the cuts would be made will not be revealed until April, with the Ministry saying some would be redundancies but others would come from leaving vacant roles unfilled.
Davies said either way, vital expertise would be taken out of the public health system.
"A lot of these people have been working for the Ministry and formed very strong bonds - particularly during the Covid period, giving their all to meet the demands of that pandemic crisis for New Zealand," she said.
It was naive of the government to suggest there was fat in the system that could be trimmed, especially with a growing and ageing population, she said.
"The work that is needed to prepare for the health needs of the country - that's really serious, important work. It's the backbone of the health system."
Staff were facing a great deal of uncertainty as they waited for more information, knowing they could lose a quarter of the people they work with.
"Not knowing whether that's you or someone you're ... working next to, that's a really big, big level of uncertainty and it's a huge cut. It's cutting really deep," she said.
The detailed proposal for change comes out in April, after which there will be three weeks of consultation.
The ministry's transformation management director Geoff Short said it was a difficult and unsettling time for staff.
Some of the proposed changes could also see new positions being created and restructuring was likely, he said.

How a balloon-borne experiment can do the job of the Hubble space telescope
by Richard Massey and Fionagh Thomson, The Conversation
An astronomical telescope designed to complement the aging Hubble Space Telescope lifted off from New Zealand's south island on April 16 2023. But as a sphere the size of a football stadium rose silently and slowly over the Tauhinukorokio mountains, calls started coming in from residents.
Local police and radio stations , however, had been briefed by Nasa that the giant helium balloon would lift the two-ton SuperBIT telescope to 40km above sea level, over the next three hours. The mission, in which we were involved, was to test whether a balloon-borne telescope could capture deep space images with high enough resolution to study the unknown substance, dubbed dark matter , that is 85% of all material in the universe.
The observations and subsequent data analysis have proved that balloon-borne experiments can be just as useful as those launched by rockets, but are much cheaper. It is now up to scientists, government agencies and private companies to make the most of them.
For the next month, polar stratospheric winds carried SuperBIT around the world every eight days , mainly over the Antarctic ocean but clipping the tip of South America. It went where the wind carried it, but could look in any direction.
Each day, solar panels recharged its batteries. At night, it photographed the sky, including the Tarantula nebula , a light source 160,000 light years away, and clusters of galaxies 20,000 times farther.
Without a tripod, SuperBIT used gyroscopes to stabilize any swinging (we discovered that the stratosphere is remarkably calm … except in turbulence above the Andes, where SuperBIT once dropped 1,000 feet). It was the first balloon-borne telescope to achieve Hubble-like performance for the short wavelengths of light that are visible to a human eye.
The balloon and the telescope continued to work perfectly, but satellite communication links gradually failed. We think radiation damaged SuperBIT's antennae . We could still download data by dropping hard drives , attached to the telescope, to the ground. But ultimately, Nasa wanted their balloon back, so we brought the telescope down by parachute to Argentina.
This was SuperBIT's fifth flight , building on ten years of graft.
Balloon benefits
Unlike orbital missions, if balloon payloads don't work first time, they can be fixed and relaunched. This fosters simple, creative design. Components now proven to work in space include hair gel (to hold things), chicken roasting bags (to keep them warm), and parts of bows used by Olympic archers (to let them go).
Failure and success are both opportunities to learn. After each flight, we make-do-and-mend, or improve the technology. For example, since cameras have rapidly got better and cheaper, we have fitted SuperBIT with a new sensor each year. All this reduces costs.
Most of the cost of traditional spaceflight is to mitigate the risk of failure. Compromises are always needed between safety, protecting expensive equipment and getting data.
If a balloon mission goes wrong, it usually matters less, because we get the equipment back. SuperBIT was built mainly by Canadian Ph.D. students , who have already spun-out a new tech company .
Risk management is different for balloons, and Nasa doesn't always get the balance right. Waiting for "perfect" weather and the perfectly designed balloon grounded all launches from Texas in 2017 . Physically impossible calculations of risk, such as a balloon bursting three times, nearly tanked the 2023 program.
A balloon can only burst once. But France's and Canada's space agencies, the US National Center for Atmospheric Research and the UK Science Research Council have all proved that a balloon can be relaunched every few days. Risk assessment can be more realistic. Balloon teams can continually test, play around with and improve the process. For rocket launches, there is one chance only.
Growing international interest
Geography is important in developing a successful national balloon program. Countries with expansive landmass can carry out short flights within their own airspace, such as Canada and the US. Northern European countries can use stable and reliable summer winds to extend flights across the Atlantic ocean, for example from Scotland to Canada.
Countries can also launch from the territory of partner nations around the world, such as the UK launching from Australia .
Geopolitics also influences the choice of flight path: a lesson well learned from the rogue Chinese balloon that flew over the US in 2023 and was ultimately shot down. Crossing any country's airspace requires permission, and we avoid war zones or areas of conflict where the balloon could be mistaken for a hostile target. This is one reason we launched from New Zealand.
Government interest in national balloon programs is increasing, as new material science and manufacturing techniques have created balloons that retain helium, lengthening flights from days to months. The US reaffirmed their interest in a 2023 government paper and Canada , France and Sweden have long-established balloon programs.
The UK ran a world-leading balloon program until the 1990s. Abandoning it lost an opportunity to train scientists and engineers into leadership roles. British teams are still often invited to join French or US satellite missions, but we no longer lead or decide what gets built. We foresee few technical, geographic or political barriers to the UK restarting a balloon program in parallel to its nascent rocket launches.
Balloons are high enough
Officially, space begins 100km above sea level. But there is no magic line, and precious little atmosphere above 40km . There, stars stop twinkling and the sky is black. Long exposure astronomical photographs become pin sharp and reveal faint, distant objects that are blurred to astronomers on the ground.
Balloon cameras or spectrographs can also look down, and are high enough to capture Earth observations just like those from satellites. They can also take atmospheric measurements around them, including of the ozone layer in the stratosphere.
Balloons won't replace all rockets, as they can't travel higher than 40km. And even though helium is a finite resource , balloons are more "environmentally-friendly". They require no rocket fuels during launch, don't add to increasing space debris in orbit—and at the end of their working life, they aren't burnt up in the atmosphere. What's not to like?
