Vancouver 27

Vancouver 27 is a 27 ′ 0 ″ / 8.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Robert B. Harris and built by Tradewind Yachts, Seair Marine Ltd (British Columbia, Canada), Philbrook's Boatyard, Pheon Yachts Ltd., and Northshore Yachts starting in 1972.

Drawing of Vancouver 27

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The first in the Vancouver Yacht series, the Vancouver 27 is a ‘go anywhere’ pocket cruiser designed by Canadian Robert Harris in 1972. This sturdy 27-foot cutter was squarely aimed for couples looking to sail the world’s oceans. Purpose built for exactly this purpose, the first boat sailed successfully from British Columbia to New Zealand and back. The solid good-looking design attracted enough attention that molds were made from the second boat built. Various versions went on to be produced in Canada and in England and more than 250 have been built in total including the extended 28 foot version, the Vancouver 28, which is still being made in England today. Canadian production ended when the molds were destroyed by a storm in 1988.

Though small and relatively heavy, she’s uncompromising with few concessions to speed and performance. Under the waterline there’s a full keel with a cutaway forefoot which gives her a stable helm and good balance on all points of sail. In the UK the design was tweaked by adding three inches to the beam at the waterline to stiffen her up, the result being a pronounced tumblehome in the hull which the Canadian boats don’t have.

In breaking seas her high freeboard, neat cockpit and built in bridge deck help prevent water below. Her propeller and rudder are protected from grounding and fouling damage by the set-up of her keel, skeg and stern-post. Lots of headroom, plenty of stowage space and ease of handling are characteristic. As would be expected by the design she’s not fast nor particularly close winded but she’s easy to handle in all conditions and ideal for a short-handed crew. English sailor Rona House can testify to this having completed a solo circumnavigation in her Vancouver 27. The cutter rig gives maximum sail plan versatility and the outboard rudder allows for use of self-steering mechanisms that are a cruiser’s best friend on long passages. Experience has shown that her traditional hull design copes easily with the rigors of offshore passages, even when chock full of cruising gear.

Inside the Vancouver 27 is a sensible small-boat layout just made for a couple at sea with three berths being the norm, although a four berth layout was also available. The three berth version has no berth forward but instead has the third berth aft in the saloon leaving plenty room for stowage up front as well as space for a generously sized quarter berth, galley and chart table. 6′ 6″ of headroom heads up the comfort factor inside.

Buyer’s Notes

The majority of boats are to be found in the UK although some can still be found in North America.  New boat prices can be obtained from Northshore yachts and a current search of the used boat market reveals prices for these boats between 12,200 – 26,600 Pounds Sterling or 19,500- 41,500 Canadian dollars depending on age and condition. Although no major problems have been discovered, the heel of the rudder is one weak point that needs careful inspection.

No end in sight to 'ticking time bombs' of pollution in Vancouver's False Creek, mariners say

Too many boats are left derelict and sink, polluting the inlet in Vancouver

More and more people looking to beat Vancouver’s high cost of living have been purchasing boats to live on in False Creek.

But Zaida Schneider, the director of a non-profit that works to restore the inlet’s marine environment, has become concerned with the number of vessels that have sunk or run aground, which he is calling “ticking time bombs of pollution.”

Postmedia News cruised the channel with Schneider on a recent afternoon. Within minutes, after taking off east from Granville Island’s public docks, a fully submerged sailboat was visible. Only its mast was peeking out of the inlet’s waters.

“It happens all the time,” Schneider said from behind the wheel of the tug boat that he’s lived on of for five years at Heather Civic Marina.

“I told the Coast Guard about this boat last week, it was obvious that no one was aboard and it was at risk of sinking — a boat breaking down like that will fill up with rain water and when it sinks, liberates engine oil and other fish-killing toxins like antifreeze.”

The Friends of False Creek co-founder says stricter enforcement is needed to ensure those anchoring are responsible for their vessels if they break down and to stop False Creek from becoming a dumping ground for derelict boats that contaminate the marine environment.

On the day of Postmedia’s tour, only three of 61 vessels anchored in False Creek were permitted to do so, said Schneider, who counted the number of boats that had the required municipal permits posted on their exteriors.

While new federal legislation allows Transport Canada to penalize owners who abandon vessels of concern with fines up to $50,000 since 2019, a government database lists only one conviction has been handed out in B.C. since the law passed.

Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion.

“It hasn’t been enough to stop the consistent contamination these boats are causing in the inlet,” Schneider said.

To obtain a free anchoring permit, boaters must have a valid operator’s licence and agree to accept liability for damages or costs associated with their boat, including towing fees if their vessel is anchored longer than a permitted 14 days in summer and 21 days in winter.

Since 2022, Vancouver Police’s marine unit said it has handed out more than 400 bylaw direction notices to vessels that have overstayed the allotted anchoring period.

In the coming weeks, police plan to ramp up enforcement efforts by removing vessels of “frequent offenders” who do not comply and leave the inlet within a month of notice being given to them. It has recently set up a secure impound lot for boats that are removed, as well as a fine and payment system for owners who wish to retrieve them.

“The marine unit is attempting to bring members of this team out to meet up with some of the individuals who are illegally living aboard vessels at anchor in False Creek to offer them alternative living arrangements,” Sgt. Darin McDougall told Postmedia.

So far, the issue with removing “vessels of concern” that are non-compliant has been that people live aboard some of them, McDougall said.

“The VPD marine unit is consulting with federal prosecutors on how to move forward with charging individuals who are deliberately ignoring these federal regulations and refusing to leave False Creek.”

In the past two years, officers have dealt with more than 20 sunken or hazardous vessels in the inlet, said McDougall. Removal of these vessels — which requires specialized equipment — can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $100,000.

Aaron Bradley, a Vancouver Island father who built the solar-powered sloop he lives on with his wife, three children and their dog, admitted that while he has been anchored in False Creek all winter, he does not have a permit to do so.

“It goes against our constitutional rights,” Bradley told Postmedia from the deck of Schneider’s boat.

But just because he doesn’t believe in anchoring permits, he said, it doesn’t mean he’d abandon his vessel at the first sign of trouble.

“If our engine craps out, we consider it an emergency. There’s no going out for dinner or a movie — we’re ordering parts right then and there and rebuilding the engine so we can move again.”

Bradley has been known to help other live-aboard residents in the channel make repairs to their vessels. He said many of them lack necessary mariner knowledge and skills.

“This isn’t a junkyard to dump garbage,” he said.

Another danger, Schneider said, is when operators leave their vessels anchored too close to the shore, causing their boats to run aground when the tide drops.

Wedged in between a wall of rocks next to Pacific Boulevard Marina, a large sailboat was spotted on its side during Postmedia’s tour.

Schneider said he dreams of a day when False Creek’s water is clean enough to be declared safe for swimming, as it was in 1992 following the city’s decision to ban industrial activity next to the inlet with the last sawmill closing in 1983.

Irresponsible boat ownership has also led to a deterioration of water quality in the channel, said Schneider, noting that boats are known to dump their waste in the waterway. Sewage contamination from the surrounding city also runs into the inlet when rainwater overflows sewers.

In the past decade, Vancouver said it has been working to separate pipes so sewage is no longer mixed with rainwater. The city introduced a mobile pump-out service for boats in 2017.

Vancouver's Science World closed Monday due to fire

A suspected electrical fire was burning during high tide in a tricky location under the pier in false creek.

Fireboat and firefighters

Social Sharing

Firefighters had to get creative to put out a small fire that was burning on the underside of Science World in a section of the building that sits on a pier over False Creek in downtown Vancouver.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) first attempted to put out the fire with the high pressure stream from a large fire boat. But the water wasn't able to reach the flames. So another boat was deployed.

"We actually got crews with a small boat and a hand line underneath the six-foot gap from the pier and the walkway area to the water, which was at high tide," said VFRS information officer Matthew Trudeau.

"They paddled underneath and extinguished the fire."

A similar fire under Science World was extinguished on Saturday, said Trudeau. An electrical problem is believed to be the cause of both.

Science World was closed for the day because of the fire.

Man dies in boating incident on Fraser River: RCMP

The Fraser River is seen from Derby Reach Park with blue partly cloudy skies and a tree lined shore.

A 65-year-old man has died after a boating incident on the Fraser River Saturday, the Langley RCMP says.

Police say they were called out around 5 p.m. after a report of a boat operator in distress in the Derby Reach area.

When emergency crews arrived, they administered medical care but the man succombed to his injuries.

“Initial investigation indicates that the boat was involved in a collision with a metal tide pole, and it is believed that the boat operator was lone occupant at the time of the incident,” said. Corp. Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP.

Police are working with the West Coast Marine Services to investigate the incident.

Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the collision is being asked to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and quote file 2024-8150.
